Question mark over China deal Government says ‘no blemish’ on procedures that were followed By Stefanos Evripidou

T

HE POTENTIAL multi-million euro deal between the government and a Chinese investor to lease the old Larnaca airport for 50 years was brought into serious question yesterday, following revelations that the president’s top diplomat and his wife were personally involved. Local daily Politis yesterday published a front-page report claiming that the director of President Demetris Christofias’ diplomatic office at the Presidential Palace, Marios Ieronymides, was directly involved in negotiations with the Cyprus-registered Far Eastern Phoenix (FEP) to turn the old airport into a commercial centre. It transpired yesterday that his involvement was based on “friendship” with the Chinese businessman behind the company, Yang Qi. Allegations about his wife also playing a prominent role in the setting up and running of the Chinese-interest company raised further questions regarding issues of transparency and conflict of interest. Before moving to the Pal-

ace, Ieronymides was Cypriot ambassador to China. Politis published a photograph of him hosting a dinner for visiting Cypriot parliamentarians in Beijing last January. What makes the photo interesting is the presence of Yang Qi and Ieronymides’ wife, Tatiana. The latter’s presence would not normally raise eyebrows but for the fact that, according to Politis, she served as co-director of FEP, along with Yang Qi, for three years: from its inception in April 2009 until March 2012. Tatiana Ieronymides resigned from her post as director six days before FEP signed an agreement with Hermes Airports for a 19year lease of the old airport. She was replaced by an employee of a law firm in Cyprus. The paper reported that her husband, ambassador Ieronymides, took part in negotiations between Hermes and FEP, and was present on the long night of March 22 when the two parties finally reached a deal, signing on the dotted line for a 19year lease.

Ancient amulets belonging to toddlers found on Yeronisos By George Psyllides ARCHEOLOGISTS digging a small island off Cyprus’ western coast have discovered amulets bearing male names, believed to have been worn by male toddlers over 2,000 years ago, it was announced yesterday. The artefacts were found on the island

of Yeronisos, or Holy Island, near Peyia, an important place of pilgrimage during the later Hellenistic period - 325-58 BC when worshippers crossed the waters to pray at its sanctuary of the god Apollo. “A series of small amulets that may have been worn by toddler boys brought to Yeronisos to mark their transitional time of weaning have been recovered,” the department of antiquities said. “One

recently discovered amulet is inscribed with the male names Minas, written along the side, and Diophantes, written on the bottom. These may represent the names of boys who wore the talisman during special ceremonies on Yeronisos.” A shell also recovered from the site bears the male

THE CYPRUS Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) yesterday told investors claiming to have been misled by banks that they will be compensated only if they can prove they were defrauded, reports said. Investors will have to show that they were not in a position to know of the risks and were ill-advised, providing dates and names and evidence of conversations, CyBC reported. Anyone who invests and has the technical or professional

know-how to understand investment policy will not be compensated, CySEC told a delegation of angry investors – who have formed a group trying to get their capital back. The group also met with the finance ministry’s Director of Finance Andreas Trokkos. The investors feel they have been tricked into buying bank securities or converting securities into useless shares. The investors say they were depositors given advice by untrained staff giving them the impression they would have a stable, safe income from investing their savings into high risk securities.

Trokkos reportedly told investors yesterday the proposed solution was “valid”, state broadcaster CyBC said. However, Trokkos had previously told investors that foreign technocrats recommended a write-down or converting the securities to shares. The central bank is investigating whether people were properly advised or not. The investors hope the central bank will give them necessary ammunition to prove they were defrauded. An investigation by CySEC said that banks followed the law by distributing prospectuses enumerating risks.

Ancient toddlers’ amulets found on Yeronisos (continued from front page) names Chariton, Thrasayis, Nikkon and Hereas. “These are perhaps the names of boys who participated in the weaning rituals,” the department said. Other shells found on Yeronisos preserve the writing exercises of children practicing their Greek letters. “These suggest that a school for boys may have been part of the sanctuary.” That these amulets were made on Yeronisos is suggested by the discovery, this season, of an unfinished charm, not yet pierced for suspension and not yet engraved with designs. In the north side of the island, archaeologists unearthed a circular platform, which they believe was used for dancing – an integral part of the boys’ education and a means of pleasing Apollo – the Olympian god of music and song, prophecy and oracles. Late Hellenistic pottery excavated this season includes drinking cups, bowls, and juglets. The excavation was undertaken by the New York University Yeronisos Island Expedition, under the direction of Professor Joan Breton Connelly. NYU started exploring the island in June 1990, at around the same time as it was officially declared an ancient monument. Footballers’ gripe over foreign players is ‘borderline racist’ By George Psyllides

Cyprus Mail

When the Bank of Cyprus (BoC) and Popular Bank stopped paying interest and blocked off access to investors’ capital, a number of incensed people complained. In mid-July the furious investors had their first meeting to discuss future actions. The banks need a bailout but the state cannot afford to help them and itself requested an EU bailout. The investors have proposed they retrieve their capital by converting securities into five-year bonds with a 5.0 per cent interest rate and the option to retrieve 20 per cent each year.

CYPRUS’ football authorities yesterday questioned the intention of the island’s player association (PASP), which threatened the national team with a boycott if three recently naturalised foreign nationals were called to the squad. The football association (CFA) said PASP’s reaction was borderline racist and urged it to withdraw the measure “if it was truly interested in the welfare of Cypriot footballers and the national team.” PASP said on Tuesday they had

nothing against their three colleagues but they were concerned about the future of local players who have become a rare sight in Cypriot stadiums in recent years. “The (PASP) announcement touches the boundary of racism and creates reasonable questions as to the true intentions of PASP,” a CFA statement said. The CFA warned that with its action, PASP may drag its members into committing disciplinary offences, indirectly hurting the clubs they play for. CFA said they had discussed the matter with PASP a while ago with the players

expressing no disagreement whatsoever since they were not mass naturalisations. The same position was kept by PASP before the House Interior Committee. The CFA said it believed the enrichment of the national team with some quality players would not only help the team in achieving its goals but also help improve Cypriot footballers. It is not the first time foreign players – who have been playing for several years on the island – have been naturalised, although there had not been any public reaction previously. Most Cypriot teams currently rely on foreign players – mainly EU nationals.

Ryanair announce Larnaca decision

One million passengers through airports this month By Natalie Hami DESPITE THE financial crisis people still appear to be travelling in their droves with over one million passengers expected to use the island’s airports this month, according to Hermes spokesman Adamos Aspris. “From August 1st to the 31st, around 730,000 people will use Larnaca airport and around 300,000 will use Paphos airport,” said Aspris yesterday. Aspris said for the whole of August, over 4,500 flights would arrive and depart from Larnaca airport, while more than 1,700 would arrive and depart from Paphos. Around 1,600 of the total flights will be chartered. “We have entered the month of August which you know well is the month with the greatest passenger traffic at Cyprus’ airports,” said Aspris, adding that figures were around one per cent higher than last year. “Around six per cent of traffic for August comes from destinations such as Russia, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden,” he added. Aspris pointed out that there was an increase in passengers

Larnaca airport expects to deal with 730,000 people before the end of the month on a yearly basis from certain countries such as a 26 per cent increase from Russia. Small markets such as Italy have shown a 100 per cent increase, 14 per cent from Germany, 13 per cent from Norway and 13 per cent from Sweden. In an effort to boost tourism and promote Cyprus as a popular tourist destination

the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) recently reorganised its offices abroad. One of the reasons behind it was the fact that tourism has become increasingly competitive with the need to attract new markets. New routes have also been introduced, including charter flights to Amman and Lebanon, as well

as an increase in flights to and from Brussels due to the presidency. In terms of outgoing tourism Greek islands such as Crete, Chania and Heraklion still prove to be the most popular choices for Cypriots. Popular destinations in the rest of Europe for Cypriots in the summer are Barcelona, Bologna and Venice.

Explore the island with new iPhone app By Poly Pantelides A NEW free iPhone application allows travellers in Cyprus to visit the island independently, sharing their experience on social networking sites and getting discounts and offers by playing a game. The “Treasure Hunt” encourages people to hunt treasures - museums, villages, landmarks – earning points by going places and possibly winning prizes or a two-person stay for three nights at a local hotel. Due to be available next week for the iPhone and iPad in English, Greek, and Russian, Treasure Hunt lets people share their experience on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter. It is the contemporary version of the tourist with hat, camera and guide book. A hat and iPhone will do: snap a photo

and share it on Facebook, log in your location, check out a restaurant and fiddle around with your toy as you are waiting for the bus. The application includes four businesses and ten locations in Paphos, from the well-known Petra tou Romiou where the goddess of love Aphrodite emerged to the less visited ancient village of Lemba. In Lemba, people can stop and check out a pottery business. But they will not be taken there in busloads and be pushed to buy. Instead, they can check out the public bus network via Treasure Hunt and find out how they can get somewhere independently, perhaps the temple of Aphrodite at Kouklia or the Tombs of the Kings. Treasure Hunt “brings the end-consumer in direct contact with the tourist product,” said Petros Mavros of Avantless Tourism consultants who came up with the concept. Businesses

that sign up will need to offer tourists something back: a souvenir or a discount, Mavros said. The makers of Treasure Hunt think the future is bright: more local cities and locations are streamlined for future versions and there is already interest from four different locations abroad. “Tourism is rapidly changing, and Cyprus can now lay claim to having created a world’s first in electronic tourism which combines education, entertainment, and full-on instant promotion for each town and city,” said the co-founder of Cocoon Creation that developed and designed the application, Michalis Strouthos. By 2013 android and blackberry users will also be able to download Treasure Hunt. Download the free application on the iTunes App Store or by visiting www.pafostreasurehunt.com .

LOW-COST Ryanair yesterday finally confirmed that it would be suspending flights to and from Larnaca for the winter period starting in November. It said they would resume for summer 2013. The summer season usually begins on March 30. The move to suspend came following weeks of unsuccessful negotiations with the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) to keep the four Larnaca flights running. Since 2010 Ryanair has been flying to four secondary European airports from Larnaca; Dusseldorf Weeze, Barcelona Girona, Bologna and Brussels Charleroi, and set up a hub in Paphos earlier this year from where it operates 15 destinations. The airline announced yesterday that while it was pulling out of Larnaca for the winter, it would be adding four new destinations to and from Paphos over the winter period; Chania Crete, London Stansted, Milan Bergamo and Thessalonica. Our Larnaca flights programme will be discontinued by the end of summer, namely from November,” said Maria Macken, Ryanair’s sales manager for the Cypriot market. “This is mainly due to a combination of reasons such as increases in fuel prices and the traditional need to maintain low fares during the winter season. There is

still, however, enough time for passengers to take advantage of the low fares offered by Ryanair for the 15 summer routes from Paphos and the four routes from Larnaca,” she added. Last year the Larnaca flights ran all through the winter. To compensate for the hike in the price of fuel, Ryanair asked the Cypriot authorities to double the incentives it receives for the ‘promotion’ of its flights to Cyprus. But last week, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) said it did not have the money. CTO chairman Alekos Oroundiotis was contacted yesterday but did not want to comment. Speculation and confusion about what move Ryanair was going to make, has hung in the air for weeks but nothing definite was announced until yesterday. Despite an email confirmation from Ryanair to the Cyprus Mail late last week, flights to Barcelona Girona could still be booked throughout the winter from their website. Yesterday they were still available into December even though the airline has issued its official announcement that they would stop from November. Flights to Bologna have already been blanked on the Ryanair website, and Brussels and Dusseldorf appear to have some flights available into the first week of November as of yesterday.

Home Is Cyprus in distress? No, the flag’s just upside down By Stefanos Evripidou WHILE CYPRIOTS around the world celebrated the country’s first ever Olympic medal courtesy of sailor Pavlos Kontides, Cyprus’ honorary consulate in Slovenia was flying the flag upside down, a traditional signal of distress, particularly in shipping although it is rarely used any more. A member of the UK-based Cypriot Student Front took a photograph of the upside-down Cyprus flag in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana on Tuesday, the day after Kontides won a silver medal in the men’s laser competition. The Cyprus Mail called the Cypriot ambassador in Slovenia, Costas Leontiou, who runs a small embassy in Ljubljana, to search for any signs of distress. “What I can state categorically is that we’re not talking about the flag outside the embassy, though it might possibly be the one outside the honorary consulate,” he said. Sure enough, 20 minutes later, Leontiou called back, reporting that his suspicions had been confirmed. On receiving the alert from the paper, the Cypriot ambassador sent his chauffeur to the capital’s centre where he was able to confirm that the consu-

late truly was flying the flag upside down. Leontiou said he had some “harsh words” with the Slovenian national and requested that the flag be put the right way up immediately. In the past, American and British ships used the upside-down flag as a symbol of distress the high seas. More recently, it can also be used as a form of protest by the country’s citizens. The Cypriot embassy was set up relatively recently ahead of Slovenia taking over the EU presidency in 2008. Before that, the honorary consulate run by a Slovenian national handled all consul affairs. After the embassy opened, the foreign ministry decided to keep the consulate open. Leontiou noted that it was not uncommon to keep consulates open even after an embassy has been set up, as consuls often have good contacts and local knowledge. However, the decision to keep both a consulate and embassy open is usually taken for large countries that have a wide range of dealings with Cyprus, particularly in the fields of business and tourism. Slovenia has a population of two million.

Two police officers among seven people arrested for loansharking By George Psyllides POLICE yesterday arrested seven people – including two of their own – in connection with a single case of threat-enforced loan-sharking in which a Nicosia man was required to pay between 10 and 20 per cent interest per month. It appears the man was caught in a vicious circle of borrowing from one suspect to pay the other while in the meantime threatened and asked to transfer property to repay his dues. Two of the suspects who loaned the man money at extortionate interest rates were police officers who are

Court hears that one of the officers threatened the complainant to stop him from going to authorities now facing a disciplinary investigation – beyond the criminal case they are implicated in. The Nicosia district court remanded the officers and one other suspect in custody for four days. The other three will spend three days in custody. Police said three other people are sought in connection with the case. The seven were arrested after the Nicosia man reported to police late in July that he had been forced to resort to usury to cover

certain emergencies. It started in September 2010, the court heard, when he borrowed the first €10,000 from one of the suspects with a 10 per cent interest rate per month. To repay his debt, the complainant borrowed money from one of the two cops, trapping himself in a vicious circle with the dues piling up. In June this year, the first lender demanded the man transfer his car or immovable property to the lender’s name if he did not pay

his dues by July. The man had borrowed a total of €29,000 from the first suspect and has so far paid him €35,380 back and should have paid another €15,000 by the end of last month to settle his debt. It was a similar situation with the five other suspects, police told the court. Police said the man has to pay €31,000 to the first cop by the end of this month to settle his debt. That is on top of the €32,900 already paid on an initial loan of

€21,500. The man said he was under tremendous pressure from the cop to sign a paper accepting the debt and when he asked for an extension he was refused. When he said he would go to the police, the cop threatened “that he also has his own people,” the court heard. The second cop also lent the man money – €15,000. The man so far paid €26,800 and owes another €27,250. Police told the court that the second cop is working

with one of the other suspects who owns a company involved with usury. The court heard that the second cop had threatened the man in a bid to prevent him from going to the authorities. “If you do such a thing and something happens with my job, you should disappear from Cyprus; you and your family,” the suspect said according to police. Police also told the court that in the days between the complaint and their arrest, two of the suspects – they did not name – called the man and warned him not to pursue the matter further. One call was made to the man’s wife, the court heard.

Question mark over China deal for old airport Top priority for Hermes is to conclude negotiations between Chinese investor and government as soon as possible (Continued from front page) However, the Chinese-interest company sought to extend that deal for a further 31 years to justify the large investment needed to turn the old airport into a commercial centre with a showroom and bonded facilities for Chinese companies to display their products. Finalisation of the 50-year agreement has hit a number of snags, with the state only recently giving the potential Chinese investors a final proposal with a list of preconditions for reaching agreement. The government and Attorney-general reportedly had concerns on the financial viability of the company and the legality of extending the 19-year deal between Hermes and FEP for a further 31 years in a separate deal between the state and FEP. According to Politis, 49.9 per cent of the shares in FEP are owned by Yang Qi, while the remaining 50.1 per cent are held in trust by Montrago Nominees Ltd. Until yesterday, the interests behind Montrago were not publicly known. In response, Hermes Airports spokesman Adamos Aspris yesterday read out a statement on the presence of Ieronymides at the signing of the agreement with FEP last March. “Hermes Airports wishes to state unequivocally that Marios Ieronymides was there as a friend of the Chinese businessman Yang Qi and not as a representative of the president or the state, something which he clarified to us in advance.” Aspris said the priority for Hermes was to conclude negotiations between the Chinese investor and government as soon as possible so the project can finally be brought to fruition “and create the conditions for the country to gain significant benefits”.

Communications minister Efthymios Flourentzos yesterday insisted that all the proper procedures have been followed to the letter, adding that Ieronymides has no institutional role in the negotiations. “We categorically state there is no blemish on procedures followed so far by the government” as regards the proposed Chinese investment, he said. “All relevant procedures were followed to the letter” from the start, he added. “Ambassador Marios Ieronymides who is mentioned in the report did not have, neither could he have, any institutional or other role, or any participation in the government’s handling of this specific issue,” he said. Flourentzou himself has been handling the negotiations, following a decision of the ministerial committee set up to look into the matter, he noted. The “only important issue” Politis raised was the question of who are the real shareholders behind FEP, something which the government sought to clarify. According to the minister, this was clarified last May by the company’s lawyers handling the project, noting that the remaining 50.1 per cent of shares also belong to the Chinese businessman Yang Qi. “All procedures followed so far were in accordance with the law and the government was in constant consultation with the Attorney-general,” he said. In addition, any final decision on the potential project will be sent to the Republic’s Legal Service for advice, he added. Quizzed further on state broadcaster CyBC last night, Flourentzos acknowledged that he was not made aware of the role played by Ieronymides and his wife in the Chineseinterest company until last

week, following clarifications sought by the government. When the company submitted further details on the project on the government’s request, the ministry discovered that Ieronymides’ wife had been the co-director for three years. “We sought clarifications to find out about this issue and who is this woman? We knew the name but didn’t know her,” said Flourentzos. “This is an issue we will take into account as part of the evaluation of the proposal submitted. But I think many are rushing to draw conclusions,” he added. The minister was unable to comment on whether an investigation will be launched into the revelations. The opposition parties yesterday roundly slammed the government for a lack of transparency over the affair. Main opposition DISY spokesman Haris Georgiades said: “Evidently, a much-trumpeted investment has fallen victim to personal interests at the presidential palace.” EDEK demanded a full investigation into the allegations while DIKO said the report confirms that state institutions and political systems are facing a serious credibility problem. The Greens and EVROKO also sought clarifications and greater transparency. Ruling AKEL released a statement saying the investment is being handled properly and above board by the government. “On the contrary, the government has been accused of delaying decision-making because it complies with the relevant legal procedures, is in constant contact with the legal service and has as its only goal to serve public interest,” said AKEL.

Turkish Cypriots mark Tylliria bombing AROUND 1,600 Turkish Cypriots were transported by bus to the north western enclave of Kokkina yesterday to celebrate the bombing of Tylliria by the Turkish air force in August 1964. Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu who arrived by helicopter said the battle at Kokkina 48 years ago was without doubt the most critical turn in the struggle of the Turkish Cypriots since Cyprus passed into the hands of the British in 1878. In his speech, Eroglu said it will become clear very soon after next February’s presidential elections whether a peace solution can be achieved, noting that a timeframe must be imposed for any new round of negotiations. “If not, then we have our own steps to take,” he said. The majority of Turkish Cypriots, including

Eroglu’s predecessor Mehmet Ali Talat, arrived in 74 buses via the Limnitis crossing; others arrived for the celebrations in small boats and on Turkish warships departing from occupied Kyrenia. The Kokkina battle in 1964 is burnt in the memory of Greek Cypriots in the area who experienced the full effects of napalm bombs dropped by the Turkish air force. Costas Michaelides, Kato Pyrgos’ village leader, described the day as a tragic one. He called for the opening of a checkpoint through the Turkish army-controlled Kokkina enclave to provide quicker access for local residents to the Limnitis checkpoint. “We hope one day the suffering of the people of Tylliria will end and these celebrations too, because they only bring shame on our community.”

Former president Glafcos Clerides was discharged from Evangelistria hospital yesterday. Clerides, 93, was admitted with a leg infection last Sunday. His doctor Iosif Kasios said that he is doing well and will continue his medication at home

Cyprus scores bottom on waste Only 11 points overall on EU list By Natalie Hami CYPRUS has scored a mere 11 points in an EU Commission report on the waste management performance of member states. The report shows major differences between member states on the implementation of EU waste legislation, concentrating mainly on municipal waste. According to the report Cyprus scored zero on the majority of criteria such as the amount of municipal waste recovered, the existence of a pay-as-you-throw system (PAYT) for municipal waste, the compliance of existing landfills for non-hazardous waste and the existence of restrictions for the disposal of municipal waste into landfills. Other countries that scored very few points were Roma-

Currently the main environmental threat from biodegradable waste is the production of methane from waste decomposing in landfills, which accounted for some three per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions in the EU-15 in 1995. amount of biodegradable municipal waste that they landfill to 35 per cent of 1995 levels by 2016 which will significantly reduce this problem. The report also pointed out that out of the 104 landfills around the island for non-hazardous waste, apparently only one complies with the EU directive for landfills, which aims at reducing the negative effects on the environment. In terms of implementing certain legislation the report

shows that there are major discrepancies in the implementation and application of the Waste Framework Directive (WFD), which ‘defines the basic principles of environmentally sound management of waste.’ The island, among other countries such as Bulgaria and Greece also does not have a Waste Prevention Programme or a Waste Management Programme. However, Cyprus has had no infringement procedures against it for the WFD and the Landfill Directive. On a positive note, the report revealed that Cyprus received an average or good scoring on average recycling rate, a considerable increase of recycling of municipal waste and had no infringements or court cases issued against it. According to Environment Commissioner Charalambous Theopemptou, there is an EU Directive that points us towards the collection of organic waste and composting as well as recommending the separate collection of plastic, metal, wood and clothes. “For example if someone has a plastic bucket it cannot be taken and recycled by Green Dot because they only take packaging items so there has to be a way to recycle it,” said Theopemptou. “Even the recycling of clothes is done privately,” he said. He also stressed how tragic the waste of wood was, especially in the case of wooden palettes that could easily be used as fire wood.

Language NGO call for help CYPRIOT international NGO Language Transfer (LT), which offers free downloadable language courses is seeking financial assistance to keep the programme going. The project’s aim is to make courses in Greek, Turkish and the local dialects of these languages with The Thinking Method free for download. LT is also planning various bicommunal language activities once the courses are released, and also further courses such as Cypriot Maronite Arabic and Western Armenian, to highlight the pluralism of Cyprus. “Language Transfer has worked with very limited resources since its establishment in early 2011 and the courses, whilst proving extremely popular, have been released slowly

We are aiming to raise $15,000 for the purchase of equipment and the completion of LT’s most popular courses in order to put us firmly on the map and ensure LT’s self-sustainability” It said that after a generous donation from web giant RapidShare of $5,000, LT was well on the way to fulfilling its target. “But we still need help”. Language Transfer operates both locally and internationally, and is becoming an established authority on language learning across the globe. LT has travelled to various countries from Argentina to Egypt to talk on the project and the methodology. LT aims to unite people through language whilst promoting and fostering pluralism, make the experience of language learning pleasurable and freely available and maintain a culturally objective dialogue. Britain

‘We haven’t broken contract,’ says PM

In its quarterly inflation report, the Bank of England slashed its growth forecast for 2012 to around zero from 0.8 per cent in its May report (EPA)

Zero-growth forecast for British economy By David Milliken and Olesya Dmitracova THE Bank of England slashed its outlook for British economic growth to zero for this year, as eurozone “storm clouds” cast a long shadow and scars from the world’s financial crisis appear deeper than previously thought. Governor Mervyn King said there was no urgent need to print more money, and even less of a case to cut interest rates, but in a marked contrast to the past, he warned that the economy would grow at sub-par speed for at least the next three years. King’s bleak message will do nothing for Britain’s increasingly strained coalition governing parties, which need an economic recovery well ahead of 2015 elections to justify

BoE governor says no urgent need for further stimulus an austerity plan to erase a record budget deficit which is attracting growing criticism. “We are navigating rough waters, and storm clouds continue to roll in from the euro area,” King told a Wednesday news conference to present the central bank’s latest forecasts. “Unlike the Olympians who have thrilled us over the past fortnight, our economy has not yet reached full fitness. But it is slowly healing,” he said. Sterling strengthened and British government bonds underperformed German debt as markets had expected King to appear more open

to further government bond purchases or to a cut to interest rates below their record low of 0.5 per cent. The BoE resumed its asset buying last month, launching a four-month, £50-billion ($78billion) programme with newly created money to keep a lid on borrowing costs and pump more cash into the economy. Since then, figures have shown Britain’s recession has deepened, with little sign of a hoped-for bounce in activity in July or a boost from the Olympic Games the country is hosting. “If the Bank’s view on the economy comes to pass, the Chancellor (finance minister)

faces a very rough road with the public finances as he tries to cut the deficit,” said Graeme Leach, chief economist at the Institute of Directors business lobby. Many economists are still betting on another dose of quantitative easing asset purchases later this year. “The Inflation Report clearly leaves the door wide open for the Bank of England to act again, we suspect that the MPC will wait until November before delivering another £50 billion dosage of QE,” said Howard Archer from IHS Global Insight. Government spending cuts, the drag from Europe, bad weather and one-off factors including an extended break for Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations have all weighed on demand.

Man arrested following grandmother’s ‘waterboarding’ ordeal A 31-YEAR-old man was arrested yesterday following a burglary where a grandmother was “waterboarded” inside her own home. Francoise Jansen described the terrifying ordeal, which took place in St George’s Hill, Weybridge, Surrey, as “sheer hell”

and said she thought she was going to die at the hands of the two masked burglars who broke into her home. The 73-year-old widow told how she was also doused in boiling water by the intruders who held her captive for several hours and threatened to

Manet painting saved for UK A PORTRAIT by French painter Edouard Manet has been saved for the UK after an eight-month campaign raised almost £8 million to buy it. The oil painting, Portrait Of Mademoiselle Claus, was sold to a foreign buyer last year for £28.35 million but the government put an export bar on it and under the terms of its sale it was made available to a British public institution for just over a quarter of its market value. The campaign raised the £7.83 million needed to buy it for its new home at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

DAVID Cameron said yesterday that he had a “fundamental disagreement” with Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg over the government’s constitutional reforms, but insisted it would not stop them working together in coalition. The Prime Minister rejected Clegg’s claim that the Conservatives had broken the coalition “contract” by failing to support House of Lords reform, forcing the Liberal Democrat leader to abandon his plans for a mainly-elected upper chamber. Interviewed on LBC 97.3 radio, Cameron insisted the only deal had been for the Tories to allow a referendum on AV voting for parliamentary elections in return for Lib Dem backing for a redrawing of the parliamentary boundaries. “There’s a fundamental disagreement here in that I profoundly believe that the link was between the AV referendum that we promised to deliver and the boundary changes that I think are right because you should have equal-sized seats across the country,” he said. “Now Nick takes a different view, he’s entitled to do that, but as I say, this disagreement is not going to get in the way of getting on with what re-

PM David Cameron ally matters, which is getting people back to work, getting our economy moving, getting investment in Britain.” Despite Clegg’s warning that the Lib Dems would now line up with Labour to oppose the boundary changes - which experts believe could be worth an extra 20 seats to the Tories at the next general election - Cameron made clear that he would fight to push them through when they come back to the Commons next year. “We’ve got a lot of water to flow under the bridge between now and then,” he said. “People listening to this programme would love us to cut the size of the House of Commons, stop spending so much money on politics and have a fair system where all the seats are the same size.”

Philippines rushes aid to flood-hit Manila

WORLD TODAY Japanese PM secures tax compromise JAPANESE Prime Minister Yoshihko Noda clinched yesterday an eleventh hour compromise with the opposition, saving a hard-fought deal on a contentious sales tax increase in return for a pledge to hold a general election “soon”. A final upper house vote on the tax plan had, until recently, seemed a formality after Noda reached an agreement with two main opposition parties in June and secured its smooth passage in the lower house. But Noda’s sliding ratings, caused in part by his embrace of unpopular causes such as the tax increase and nuclear reactor restarts, emboldened the opposition, which made a clear commitment to early polls the price for backing the tax bill.

Pakistan top court order PAKISTAN Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf was ordered on Wednesday to appear before the Supreme Court this month over his failure to comply with orders to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari. The move, another twist in a long-running standoff between the government and the judiciary, could lead to further political instability in Pakistan. Two months ago, Ashraf’s predecessor, Yusuf Raza Gilani, was found guilty of contempt over the same issue and disqualified from holding the post of prime minister. “(Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf) shall appear in person on the next date of hearing,” the court said. The court adjourned proceedings until August 27.

HEAVY rains pounded the Philippine capital yesterday, prompting a new danger alert as emergency workers rushed food, water and clothes to almost one million people through streets turned into rivers after 11 straight days of monsoon downpour. About 60 per cent of Manila, a metropolis of about 12 million people, remained inundated, Benito Ramos, head of the national disaster agency, told Reuters. Danger to the population was compounded by an early Wednesday evening one-hour downpour of 54.7 mm (2.15 inches), just shy of a record one-hour soaking of 56.58 mm in September 2009 that inundated the capital, killing more than 700 people and causing $1 billion worth of property damage. The weather bureau issued a new weather alert as the downpour hit, only hours after lifting an earlier warning. But many people have refused to leave flooded homes, fearing a loss of valu-

ables and livelihoods, Ramos said. “We’re also asking people living along swollen riverbanks to evacuate,” Ramos said. “If there is a need for us to force them to leave their homes, we will do that for their own safety.” Nineteen people were reported killed since Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 72 since steady rains started when Typhoon Saola hit northern portions of the main Luzon island in late July. Financial markets reopened after being shut on Tuesday, but schools and many businesses shut for a second day. Some public offices suspended operations on Wednesday afternoon. Jesse Robredo, the interior secretary, said the government has started drawing up plans to permanently relocate residents along riverbanks and coastal areas to reduce property and human losses during the rest of the typhoon and monsoon season. The national disaster agency said on

Wednesday morning that at least 850,000 people were stranded or displaced, many seeking relief at crowded temporary shelter areas. “We were hoping to go home because it’s difficult here. The sleeping conditions are not comfortable, and it’s not easy to get food,” Joyce Anne Diri, a mother of three, told Reuters at a temporary shelter in flooded Marikina City in the eastern part of the capital. The seasonal monsoon rains in the Philippines gathered strength this year from Typhoon Saola and as tropical storm Haikui travelled through the Philippine Sea this week. But the rains should dissipate by Thursday, the weather bureau said, as Haikui made landfall in China. The combination of constant rains and an overflowing lake that fed into the Pasig River, a tidal estuary swollen well beyond flood crest, was made worse as the high tide pushed in more water from the western ocean bay.

Belarus embassy staff exit Sweden in toy drop spat Withdrawal of staff over democracy stunt worsens diplomatic rift with EU By Richard Balmforth and Mia Stanley BELARUS said yesterday it was withdrawing its remaining embassy staff from Sweden over a pro-democracy stunt involving an air drop of teddy bears on its territory and gave Sweden until the end of the month to pull its diplomats out of Minsk. Though a foreign ministry statement said Belarus was not severing relations with the Nordic country, the move marked an escalation in the dispute and looked certain to worsen the already strained relations with the European Union. Belarus expelled Sweden’s ambassador on August 3 following the July 4 escapade in which about 800 toy bears bearing pro-democracy messages were parachuted into the hardline former Soviet republic from a light aircraft chartered by a Swedish public relations firm. The incident was a humiliation for President Alexander Lukashenko, who has been

in power since 1994 and is on poor terms with the West because of his harsh policies towards members of the political opposition. The Belarussian ambassador to Stockholm was also withdrawn.

‘FORCED’ DECISION The foreign ministry said Minsk was pulling out its remaining embassy staff because Sweden had aggravated the situation by expelling two more diplomats and had refused to allow a new Belarussian ambassador to take up his post. “In this connection, the Belarussian side has been forced to take the decision to withdraw its embassy in Sweden and bring back all its (embassy) staff to Belarus,” the statement said. “At the same time ... the Swedish side is asked to withdraw its embassy from the Republic of Belarus before August 30,” it said. In Stockholm, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said in a Twitter comment:

“Lukashenko is now throwing all Swedish diplomats out of Belarus. His fear of human rights reaching new heights.” It took Belarus more than three weeks to confirm the teddy bear incident after it happened. Lukashenko subsequently sacked his air defence chief and head of the border guards and reprimanded the state security agency for lapses in vigilance. He told the incoming border guards chief not to hesitate to use weapons to stop any future air intrusions from abroad. In a statement on Tuesday on its website www.kgb. by, the Belarussian KGB state security service said two men, Anton Suryapin and Sergei Basharimov, had been detained on suspicion of complicity in the July 4 “illegal intrusion”. The Swedish plane dropped the toy bears near the town of Ivenets and near the capital Minsk, each carrying a message urging the Belarussian leadership to show greater respect for human rights.

‘South Africa could help in Iran nuke standoff’

Clinton visiting the 94-yearold Mandela (AFP)

SOUTH Africa’s next generation of leaders should pay tribute to the legacy of anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela, by promoting democratic values around the world, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday. She also called on South Africa, which voluntarily gave up its nuclear weapons programme from 1989, to use its long-standing links with Tehran to persuade Iran to reconsider its suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons. Clinton, speaking two days after visiting the 94-year-old Mandela, said

South Africa’s legacy of peacefully overturning apartheid brought with it responsibilities. “Few countries on this continent can carry as much weight or be such effective partners and leaders as South Africa,” Clinton told university students in Cape Town, in a speech billed as the centrepiece of an 11-day Africa tour. “You are a democratic power with the opportunity to influence Africa and the world.” Clinton’s speech was a strong call for South Africa to do more on everything from promoting economic develop-

ment to solving global challenges, such as Syria’s bloody crisis or the impasse over Iran’s nuclear programme. “As the first country to voluntarily give up nuclear weapons, South Africa speaks with rare authority,” Clinton said. South Africa’s ruling African National Congress has had close ties with the Islamic leaders of Iran as well as with Western powers trying to put pressure on Tehran to end what they suspect is a drive to develop a nuclear weapons capability. Iran says its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes only.

Egypt hits militants in Sinai to Israeli approval Action follows killing of 16 border guards By Yusri Mohamed EGYPTIAN aircraft struck at targets near the border with Israel yesterday and troops raided villages as a crackdown began on Islamic militants blamed for a deadly attack on Egyptian border police, army officials and witnesses said. Israel, urging Egypt to deal with a growing threat on its southern flank, voiced approval of the security sweep, the biggest military assault in the area since their 1973 war. The air strikes around the town of Sheikh Zuwaid, 10 km (6 miles) from the Palestinianruled Gaza Strip, followed clashes overnight between armed men and security forces at several checkpoints in the north of Egypt’s Sinai region. Gunmen killed 16 border guards on Sunday in the bloodiest attack on security forces in Sinai since Egypt made peace with Israel in 1979. The attackers stormed through the border into Israel but they were killed by Israeli fire. The militants, sworn to destroy Israel, have stepped up their actions on the isolated desert frontier since an uprising toppled Egypt’s autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak last year.

Egyptian security forces stand by their armoured personnel carriers ahead of a military operation in the northern Sinai peninsula yesterday (AFP) The new president, Mohamed Mursi, a more moderate Islamist who took office in June, tried to allay Israeli concerns with promises to bring the region back under government control. But Mursi has also brought Egypt closer to the Islamist Hamas movement ruling Gaza,

making this a delicate time in relations between the Jewish state and the Arab power. The militant strongholds are in northern Sinai. Red Sea resorts further south are popular with foreign tourists and a lifeline for Egypt’s struggling economy. The Egyptian army, which

kept peace with Israel throughout the Mubarak years and still has broad sway over national security, promised retribution after Sunday’s attacks and brought in 500 extra soldiers and police. But there was no crackdown until Tuesday night after armed men opened fire

on several checkpoints in alArish town, the security and administrative centre for northern Sinai. Gunmen also attacked checkpoints in Rafah, Egypt’s entry point into the Gaza Strip that borders both Israel and Egypt. On Wednesday morning, witnesses in Sheikh Zuwaid said two military planes flew over the area and they heard explosions. Other people near the town said they saw three cars bombed. Egypt’s military leadership said ground and air forces had begun to restore stability in Sinai. “The forces were able to execute the plan successfully. The forces will continue the plan and calls on tribes and families of Sinai to cooperate in the restoration of security,” it said. Troops entered al-Toumah village, 20 km (15 miles) to the south, acting on information that militants were staying there, army commanders in Sinai told Reuters. One said 20 militants were killed. A villager said he saw military helicopters chasing vehicles out of al-Toumah and heard rocket fire. The men in the cars fired back with machine guns, he said. An army general in al-Toumah said helicopters destroyed three vans in which militants tried to escape. The military response focused on Shaikh Zuwaid, a mud-brick settlement that relies heavily on profits from smuggling goods and people through tunnels into Gaza since the Palestinian territory was cut off from Israel. Egypt said the gunmen behind Sunday’s attack arrived via the tunnels and it began work to seal them off on Tuesday.

Rebels pushed back in Aleppo TROOPS loyal to President Bashar al-Assad assaulted rebel strongholds in Aleppo yesterday in one of their biggest ground attacks since rebels seized chunks of Syria’s biggest city three weeks ago. Assad must win the battle for Aleppo if he is to reassert his authority nationwide, although diverting military forces for an offensive to regain control there has already allowed rebels to seize large swathes of countryside in the north. Aleppo, at the heart of Syria’s failing economy, has taken a fearful pounding since the 17-month-old uprising against Assad finally took hold in a city that had stayed mostly aloof. “We have retreated, get out of here,” a lone rebel fighter yelled at Reuters journalists as they arrived in Aleppo’s Salaheddine district. Nearby checkpoints that had been manned by rebel fighters for the last week had disappeared. Syrian state television said government forces had pushed into Salaheddine, killing most of the rebels there, and had entered other parts of the city in a new offensive. It said dozens of “terrorists” were killed in the central district of Bab alHadeed, close to Aleppo’s ancient citadel, and Bab alNayrab in the southeast. But a rebel spokesman in Salaheddine, the southern gateway to Aleppo, denied Assad’s troops had taken full control. “Syrian forces are positioned on one side of Salaheddine but they haven’t entered and clashes are continuing,” Abu Mohammed said.

Son of Bo Xilai sends statement to murder trial - CNN Texas puts to death mentally impaired inmate BO Guagua, the son of ousted Chinese politician Bo Xilai has broken his silence and submitted a witness statement to the murder trial of his mother, CNN said yesterday, citing an email from the young man. Bo Guagua’s mother, Gu Kailai, goes on trial today in one of the most politically sensitive cases in China in decades, accused of murdering a British businessman. Many ordinary Chinese see the charge as part of an attempt to ruin Bo Xilai politically. Gu, and a Bo family aide, have been charged with murdering Neil Heywood, a former family friend who lived in China and had helped get Guagua into Harrow,

an exclusive British boarding school, and then into Oxford University. The trial is being held in the eastern Chinese city of Hefei. “As I was cited as a motivating factor for the crimes accused of my mother, I have already submitted my witness statement,” Guagua told CNN in an email. “I hope that my mother will have the opportunity to review them,” he added. “I have faith that facts will speak for themselves.” CNN said he did not elaborate. Guagua graduated this year from Harvard’s Kennedy School and is believed to be still in the United States.

A TEXAS man convicted of killing a police informant has been executed after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected arguments that he was too mentally impaired to qualify for the death penalty. Marvin Wilson, 54, was pronounced dead 14 minutes after his lethal injection began at the state prison in Huntsville. Wilson’s lawyers argued that he should have been ineligible for capital punishment because of his low IQ. In their appeal to the court, his lawyers pointed to a psychological test conducted in 2004 that pegged Wilson’s IQ at 61, below the generally accepted minimum competency standard of 70.

But lower courts agreed with state lawyers who argued that Wilson’s claim was based on a single test that may have been faulty and that his mental impairment claim was not supported by other tests and assessments of him over the years. The Supreme Court denied his request for a stay of execution less t han two hours before his lethal injection began. Lead defence lawyer Lee Kovarsky said he was “gravely disappointed and saddened” by the ruling, calling it “outrageous that the state of Texas continues to utilise unscientific guidelines ... to determine which citizens with intellectual disability are exempt from execution”.

Business Anger over NY’s StanChart attack

Hopes of China pickup maintain Rio spending

THE Treasury Department and Federal Reserve were blindsided and angered by New York's banking regulator's decision to launch an explosive attack on Standard Chartered Plc over $250 billion in alleged money laundering transactions tied to Iran, sources familiar with the situation said. By going it alone through the order he issued on Monday, Benjamin Lawsky, head of the recently created New York State Department of Financial Services, also complicates talks between the Treasury and London-based Standard Chartered to settle claims over the transactions, several of the sources said. Lawsky's stunning move, which included releasing details of the bank's alleged defiance of US sanctions against Iran, is rewriting the playbook on how foreign banks settle cases involving the processing of shadowy funds tied to sanctioned countries. In the past, such cases have usually been settled through negotiation with public shaming kept to a minimum. In his order, Lawsky said Standard Chartered's dealings exposed the US banking system to terrorists, drug traffickers and corrupt states. But the upset expressed by some federal officials, who were given virtually no notice of the New York move, may provide ammunition for Standard Chartered to portray the allegations as coming from a relatively new and over-zealous regulator. But, given the content of the order - which described Standard Chartered as a "rogue institution" that "schemed" with the Iranian government and hid from law enforcement officials some 60,000 secret transactions over nearly 10 years the bank may need to come up with a strong defence.

Global miner's underlying H1 earnings fall 34 pct GLOBAL miner Rio Tinto stuck to its $16-billion spending plans, despite first-half profit falling by a third, predicting a modest pick up in the Chinese economy later this year that should stimulate demand for iron ore. The world's second-largest iron ore producer yesterday joined rival mining majors Anglo-American and Vale in reporting earnings battered by commodity price drops and stubbornly high costs. Rio said underlying profit fell 34 per cent to $5.2 billion, as a sharp drop in iron ore prices, weakness in aluminium and lower copper volumes took their toll. That was above market expectations of a sharper drop to $4.9 billion. Prices for steelmaking ingredient iron ore have tumbled this year from 2011 highs, with benchmark prices touching their lowest in two-and-a-half years last week as demand from China, the world's largest consumer of the commodity, eases. Like its peers, Rio is juggling bumper capital expenditure plans with volatile markets and an uncertain outlook. But while some rivals have begun to signal they could cut back, the min-

Arguably the most Chinadependent of the majors given its focus on iron ore, Rio yesterday struck a more optimistic note than some rivals, pointing to a likely pickup in Chinese demand in the fourth quarter as government stimulus measures take effect. The miner said its order books were full, despite weak sentiment in Europe and a fragile US recovery. "We are still selling at full volume," Chief Executive Tom Albanese said. He is

A three-day rally in world equity markets ended on Wednesday and the euro fell as doubts grew over the prospects for early action by major central banks to tackle declining global economic growth and Europe's debt crisis. On Wall Street, stocks opened lower the day after the benchmark S&P 500 touched the psychologically important 1,400 level for the first time since early May. Risky assets began rising on Friday after US jobs data eased concerns about global growth while support-

sticking to a growth forecast of around 8 per cent for China this year as the impact of measures to revive the economy would start to filter through. China's economy grew by an annual 7.6 per cent in the second quarter, the slowest pace in three years. "We are seeing, and some of our customers would be anticipating that, as we move towards the latter part of the year, there would be some pickup in demand," he said. The rosy outlook and aboveforecast numbers helped Rio's shares, trading up 2.7 per

cent at 1230 GMT at £32.14, outperforming a 0.7 per cent rise in the sector. Rio added to optimism with what it said were signs that stifling cost pressures on miners were starting to cool, echoing Australia's Fortescue, which said severe skills shortages in mining hotspots were also easing. "Cash costs took 7 or 8 per cent of earnings which is quite a hit - not unexpected, but it just shows you the cost pressures that these guys are under," RBC analyst Des Kilalea said. Rio committed in June to

spending $4.2 billion to expand its iron ore operations, including growing its Pilbara operations in Australia to 353 million tonnes of iron ore per year by 2015 as it battles to lead the race to feed China's appetite for steel ingredients before growth there eases, flattening after 2030. It signalled no change from that plan yesterday, though the miner said it was taking a "rigorous approach" to new projects, including a potential further Pilbara expansion phase that would take the operations to 450 million tonnes annually.

ing hopes of further policy easing by the Federal Reserve. Last week's signal by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi that it may ease borrowing costs for Spain and Italy provided further support. But the Bank of England on Wednesday gave no hint of future action at home despite slashing its growth forecast, prompting investors to shed riskier assets such as stocks. "Sentiment is still broadly cautious - people realise there are still a lot of hurdles to be overcome.

But investors can't ignore potential stimulus from central banks and what impact that's had on stock markets in the past," said Keith Bowman, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown. The UK central bank said it did not expect Britain's recession-hit economy to see much growth at all this year despite all its efforts to pump in cash, but it remained equivocal on whether further measures were likely. Investors had hoped the Bank of England would point to an easing

in policy later in the year as the gloomy contents of its quarterly economic outlook had been widely anticipated. In a further sign of Europe's worsening economic conditions, France's central bank said the French economy was likely to slip into a shallow recession in the third quarter. The Chinese central bank is next to face the spotlight with a batch of key economic data due on Thursday likely to draw attention to the nation's cooling growth rate.

THE Greek and Italian governments have agreed to back the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which could improve the project's chances of winning a long contest to become the means of reducing Europe's reliance on Russia by bringing in Azeri gas. Greek Deputy Energy Minister Makis Papageorgiou and his Italian counterpart reached a "close cooperation

agreement" to jointly support the pipeline that would run through their countries, the Greek ministry said in a statement. Greece and Italy were in talks with the government of Albania, which is also part of the route, over the pipeline. TAP is one of two potential pipelines short-listed by the Azeri Shah Deniz 2 gas consortium, led by BP and Statoil,

Opinion

Politicians are always quick to criticise but slow to do anything REPORTS that the man suspected of raping a 10-year-old boy last week was out on bail, awaiting trial on charges of attempted child abuse that allegedly took place last year, caused public outrage. If he had been remanded in custody until his trial, the Palestinian boy would have been spared the devastatingly traumatic experience he suffered last week, it was pointed out. People, understandably, asked why a suspected paedophile that had done time for manslaughter had been granted bail, and slammed the judge’s decision. Police also said that the granting of bail was up to the judge who had the final decision on the matter. But did the prosecution object to bail being granted? If it had, then the judge’s decision would indeed be difficult to defend. How could a suspect who had a criminal record and was facing charges of attempting sexually abusing two minors not be considered a danger to society? True, the charges against him had not been proved, but on the other hand, he had spent seven years in prison for manslaughter and was suspected of committing a sexual offence. This should have been adequate justification for not granting bail. Perhaps the law forced the judge into taking this decision. Judges are not helped by the huge delays of the courts in the administering justice. The suspect may have had to wait a year or two before going to trial and the judge may have considered this too long a time to keep him behind bars. Judges also have to operate within the law which sets a maximum sentence of two years for attempted sexual abuse of minors. In 2007, a teacher found guilty of fondling two minors was sentenced to 13 months in prison, sparking public outrage. It was explained that the maximum sentence for such an offence was two years, the House Legal Affairs Committee chairman, Ionas Nicolaou pointing out that the law was antiquated. But has anything been done since then to modernise the law and ensure tougher sentences for paedophiles? No. Cyprus has not even ratified the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, which it signed in 2007. This is not a show of tolerance to paedophiles, but an indication of the slowness with which the executive and the legislature move. The politicians publicly criticise the antiquated laws when a case of sexual abuse is reported, but do nothing subsequently to modernise the law and make provisions for tougher sentences. Will the latest case spur them into action or will they forget the matter as soon public anger has died down? We hope not, because tough prison sentences, without parole, are the best way to deal with child sex abusers. We can also introduce a sex offenders’ register, but as a psychiatrist said, “the only thing that can stop paedophiles is punishment.”

Iran on backburner F

OR ALL its recent tough talk, Israel looks highly unlikely to launch an attack against Iran ahead of US presidential elections in November, hoping that Washington will ultimately do the heavy lifting. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a blunt, public message to US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta that time was running out to tackle Iran and that US policies to curtail its nuclear programme had so far failed. An uptick of Israeli rhetoric this summer has fuelled speculation that Netanyahu is poised to follow through on a long-standing threat to attack Iran and destroy nuclear sites that many believe are geared towards creating an atomic bomb. Iran says its nuclear programme is peaceful and it would retaliate if attacked. Washington also believes Iran is seeking the ability to make a bomb and says it reserves the right to use force to prevent it, but has urged Israel to allow time for tough new US and EU economic sanctions imposed this year to have an effect. An array of analysts in Israel see an Israeli strike in coming months as unlikely, pointing to the huge difficulties posed by military action coupled with the political intricacies of defying Washington in the run-up to the US vote. An Israeli official told Reuters Netanyahu’s inner council, comprising the coalition’s eight top ministers, had not discussed Iran in detail since last year, suggesting there was nothing imminent in the works. “The octet hasn’t held a proper discussion of Iran for months - since October, as far as I can recall,” said the official, who had been briefed on the closed-door sessions. “It’s possible that, since then, Iran came up during other sessions, but I wouldn’t count those as serious discussions. You can’t make any concrete decisions or policy advances in an hour-long chat on the sidelines of a different agenda.” In addition, the official said the octet remained split on the issue, while Israel’s top military and intelligence echelon were “entirely against” launching a unilateral strike on distant and well-fortified Iranian targets that would pose an unprecedented challenge to their forces. Government spokesman Mark Regev declined to comment on the octet discussions. “This is a confidential forum,” he said. Netanyahu said this week

Analysis Crispin Balmer that media reports about toplevel opposition from past and present security chiefs was “harmful”, while analysts said their reluctance could stay his hand. “It is very, very difficult to see a situation where a prime minister will go against the advice not just of the former heads of (spy agencies) Mossad and Shin Bet, but most of the military commanders,” said Uzi Rabi, director of the Moshe Dayan Centre for Middle Eastern studies in Tel Aviv. Conceivably these internal divisions prompted Netanyahu to be particularly outspoken alongside Panetta on Monday, looking to drown out the naysayers with his uncompromising language. “Neither sanctions nor diplomacy has yet had any impact on Iran’s nuclear weapons programme,” he said, effectively writing off all efforts by President Barack Obama to influence Iran. Panetta appeared caught offguard by Netanyahu’s remarks, which came after two days of talks aimed at reassuring Israel that Washington was determined to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Despite the tone of Netanyahu’s comments, concerns over an imminent Israeli strike have eased in US defence circles since early in the year. American officials also still do not believe that Iran has made the decision to build a nuclear weapon. Whether or not Iran has actually decided to build a bomb, Israel, widely seen as the only nuclear-armed state in the Middle East, does not want Tehran to possess the capability to do so, a prospect it views as an existential threat. It says Iran’s nuclear programme must be halted before Tehran is able to defend it well enough to make a military response impossible, a deadline it says is approaching quickly as Iran disperses its capabilities in better-protected sites. With a less potent air force than the Americans have at their disposal, Israel’s window of opportunity for a damaging strike is more limited, experts say, hence the speculation that the Jewish state must act soon if it wants to be effective. But not everyone buys into that. “I believe we have time. I support the American assessment

that in four months time, or in half a year it won’t be too late,” said retired Brigadier General Uzi Eilam, senior research fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS). “In any case, I don’t believe that Israel should be the only one to lead military action against Iran. It would be much better for the United States to lead it.” Top-level Israeli officials have repeatedly questioned the notion that economic sanctions alone might influence Iran, noting that the only time Tehran halted work was shortly after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, when it feared attack. It later resumed activities as the US military got progressively bogged down in the Iraq insurgency. “We need a strong and credible military threat coupled with the sanctions to have a chance to change that situation,” Netanyahu said on Sunday. By extension, Israel will only remain credible if it shows it is ready to follow through on threats. Amongst those warning against complacency is the ex-Mossad head Efraim Halevy. “If I were Iranian, I would be very worried about the next 12 weeks,” he told Israel Radio on Thursday. A recent stream of top-level US officials to Israel, including Panetta and national security adviser Tom Donilon, suggests

Washington is eager for firsthand information on its plans, and equally eager to prevent a flare-up before November. The elections pose both a challenge and a potential opportunity to Netanyahu. Speaking in May, one senior Israeli figure with close ties to the leadership said he thought the prime minister had decided to attack and saw the run-up to the election as an advantage, believing Obama would be bounced into supporting Netanyahu’s actions under pressure from a largely pro-Israel electorate. The subsequent consequences of war, including a likely surge in oil prices, could yet impact the outcome of the US ballot, with voters already deeply concerned about the economy. That could help Obama’s opponent, Mitt Romney, who is ideologically much closer to Netanyahu than the Democratic leader. But would Israel, which is so dependent on US support, risk making such an impact on US domestic politics? Ephraim Kam, deputy director of Tel Aviv university’s INSS, believes Netanyahu will hold off. “It would not be healthy for Israeli-US relations to carry out such a significant attack that might influence the election. So my guess is they won’t do it before early November, because it might embarrass the US administration,” he said. (R)

A Chorus Line composer Marvin Hamlisch dies at 68

Madonna urges Russia to free Pussy Riot

Streisand: He was a true musical genius

By Alissa de Carbonnel

By Christine Kearney MARVIN Hamlisch, the award-winning composer of A Chorus Line and The Way We Were, has died suddenly at the age of 68, prompting warm tributes from Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli, former US first lady Nancy Reagan and dozens of stage and screen stars. Hamlisch, the musical force behind The Sting and numerous other movies and Broadway shows, died in Los Angeles on Monday, a family spokesman said. He collapsed following what was called “a brief illness”. Details were not made public. Streisand, a friend of 45 years and star of romantic movie The Way We Were, said she was “devastated” by his death and recalled how he had played at her 1998 wedding. “When I think of him now, it was his brilliantly quick mind, his generosity and delicious sense of humour that made him a delight to be around ... He was a true musical genius but above all that, he was a beautiful human being. I will truly miss him,” she added in a statement. Hamlisch, who was working until days before his death, earned the rare distinction of winning Emmy, Grammy,

Award-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch (C) accepts the Academy Award for Music at the 46th Academy Awards in 1974. Hamlisch earned acclaim and popularity for dozens of motion picture scores including The Way We Were Oscar and Tony awards. Minnelli said she had been friends with Hamlisch since the age of 13 and recalled he arranged her first and second albums. “I have lost my first lifelong best friend, and sadly we have lost a splendid, splendid talent,” the singer and actress said in a statement. In a 2010 interview Hamlisch told Broadway World that in writing The Way We Were he was trying to match “a very yin-yang sort of movie.” He explained: “I wanted to write something that was uplifting and positive; on the

other hand, there is a tremendous amount of bittersweetness to that film - and bittersweet romance - so it’s a real duality. And that’s why I think the song - though it’s in the major mode - is quite sad,” he said. The New York City-born composer, raised by Jewish parents and showing an early ability to mimic music as a young child, started out his professional career as a rehearsal pianist for Funny Girl, beginning a long history of working with Streisand. He said Streisand “has the best voice there is”. His collaborations includ-

ed musical director and arranger of Streisand’s 1994 US concert tour, for which he won two Emmy Awards, and writing the score for Streisand’s 1996 film, The Mirror has Two Faces, for which Hamlisch earned an Oscar nomination for Streisand and Bryan Adams’ duet, I’ve Finally Found Someone. His other film scores included Sophie’s Choice and Ordinary People and he cowrote the ballad Nobody Does It Better for the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. Nancy Reagan on Tuesday recalled Hamlisch as a fre-

quent entertainer at White House parties in the 1980s, and how he wrote a 77th birthday song for her late husband, former US President Ronald Reagan. Hamlisch was “a dear friend and I am truly stunned by his death at such a young age ... I don’t think you could ever find a more contemporary and talented musician,” Reagan said in a statement. Actress Debra Messing, star of the TV shows Smash and Will & Grace, said on Twitter; “The GREAT Marvin Hamlisch passed away... What a loss. What a talent. What contributions.”

Brigitte Nielsen: There Katy Perry ‘pees in buckets’ backstage is ‘no cause for alarm’ BRIGITTE Nielsen says there is ‘no cause for alarm’ after shocking pictures emerged over the weekend of her drinking vodka in a park. However the star, who has openly battled an addiction to alcohol, wants her fans and friends to know she appreciates their concern. She told website RadarOnline: “I would like to thank all my fans as well as my friends from the Hollywood community for the heartwarming calls and emails about those unfortunate and dramatic pictures. “Looking at the pictures I can understand the level of worrying, but I can assure everyone that there is no cause for alarm. I have been on the road working non-stop for such a long time, fulfilling my professional commitments, shooting shows around the world with all the pressure that comes with it.”

VODKA DRINKING The 49-year-old actress was pictured over the weekend drinking directly from a bottle of Popov vodka and also from an unlabeled mini bottle. She chain smoked cigarettes and later stumbled to the grass where she appeared to pass out. She said: “That combined with major health issues in my family drove me to the unfortunate circumstances that you can see on the pictures. At that moment in time, I felt like I needed a moment to myself, in a park. The vodka came about as a desperate move to try to release some pressure and is under no circumstances an indication of how I lead my life on a day to day basis.”

The singer admits she gets very nervous before performing

KATY Perry ‘pees in buckets’ before she goes on stage. The Firework hitmaker - who is believed to be dating John Mayer - admits her glamorous image on stage is a far cry from her performance preparations, which include nerveinduced nausea. She is quoted by The Sun newspaper as saying: “You walk on stage feeling like Mary Poppins but really you’ve just had your skin zipped, peed in a bucket and been dry-heaving over the trash can.” Katy, 27, has previously admitted her pre-performance preparations include skipping in front of a mirror. The brunette - whose divorce from ex-husband Russell Brand was finalised last month - loves to squeeze her curvaceous figure into skimpy outfits so she tests them for potential wardrobe malfunctions before committing to wearing them on stage. “It’s key to my outfits otherwise everybody gets more of a show.”

POP singer Madonna donned the trademark balaclava worn by punk band Pussy Riot during a concert in Moscow to demand Russia free three group members on trial for bursting into a Russian Orthodox church and singing a protest against Vladimir Putin. The US singer also stripped to a black bra to show the band’s name written on her back in support of Pussy Riot’s protest in Moscow’s main cathedral against close links between the president and the clergy. “I know there are many sides to every story, and I mean no disrespect to the church or the government, but I think that these three girls - Masha, Katya, Nadya - I think that they have done something courageous,” Madonna said to loud cheers from the crowd at Moscow’s Olympiysky Stadium on Tuesday night. “I pray for their freedom,” she said. Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, could face up to three years in jail for storming the altar of Christ the Saviour Cathedral on February 21 and belting out a “punk prayer” calling on the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Putin, who has been in power since 2000. The group members hide their identity by wearing coloured balaclavas during protests. Madonna put on a black balaclava at one point during the concert as a show of support. Echoing comments she made in an interview with Reuters before the concert, she made clear she believed the women had already “paid the price” after spending five months in custody since their arrest. “I know that everyone in this auditorium, if you are here as my fan, feels they have the right to be free,” she said. The singer, songwriter, entrepreneur and actor, who has often courted controversy during her career and sang songs including Like a Prayer and Like a Virgin, joined other international performers such as Sting, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Faith No More and Franz Ferdinand by commenting on the trial. The case is seen by the opposition as part of a wider crackdown on dissent by Putin following the biggest protests since he rose to power in 2000, including toughening rules governing the internet and increasing fines for protestors. Pussy Riot’s stunt took aim at both Putin and the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, who backed him in this year’s presidential campaign. But the case has also angered many Russians, including some believers, who see the reaction of the state and church as disproportionate. The three women could be sentenced this week.

The fear of genetically modified athletes

What is certain, from scientific studies and from surveys of elite sports people, is that it is technically feasible to use genetic modification to improve sporting performance

THERE have been "marathon mice", "Schwarzenegger mice" and dogs whose wasted muscles were repaired with injected substances that switch off key genes. It may not be long before we get the first genetically modified athlete. Some fear the use of gene therapy to improve athleticism is already a reality. But since sports authorities' drug testing methods still lack the sophistication needed to pick up gene doping, its status remains unclear. What is certain, from scientific studies and from surveys of elite sports people, is that it is technically feasible to use genetic modification to improve sporting performance, and that some athletes are prepared to risk their lives if they could be guaranteed to win gold medals. Officially, UK Anti-Doping, the body which oversees the control of performance enhancing drugs in Britain, says genetic manipulation as a form of performance enhancement "is currently a theoretical rather than a proven issue". But Andy Parkinson, UKAD's chief executive said: "I wouldn't be surprised if someone out there is trying to do it, and I think that's very worrying." The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) says it is ploughing "significant"

money and resources into research into finding ways to detect the genetic enhancement of athletes. Gene doping - in which DNA is introduced into the body using an inactivated virus or by other means - could alter a person's genetic make-up and improve athletic performance by increasing muscle growth, blood production, endurance, oxygen dispersal or pain perception. Since it cannot be detected, no one really knows whether athletes are using it or not.

'GENE DOPING' Chris Cooper, a professor of sports and exercise science at Essex University and author of a book called Run, Swim, Throw, Cheat thinks it is "hugely unlikely anyone is gene doping" and says the focus should be on people who use well-known performance enhancers like anabolic steroids and blood doping. However, emails that surfaced during a trial of a German track and field coach Thomas Springstein in 2006 showed that people behind some athletes were at least thinking about genetic modification as a way forward. Scientists who lead the field in devel-

oping gene therapy techniques in laboratory animals have also reported being inundated with enquiries from sports people keen to know more. "There are animal models which show efficacy and the possibility of this being technically feasible for an athlete to do," said Andy Miah, a bioethicist and director of the Creative Futures Institute at the University of the West of Scotland. The drug mentioned in the 2006 German court case was Repoxygen - a gene therapy developed by the British biotech Oxford Biomedica as a treatment for severe anemia. The company has since pulled the plug on developing the product as it seemed unlikely to be profitable as a medicine. Yet an email written by coach Springstein to a Dutch doctor suggested some in the sports world were already keen. "New Repoxygen is hard to get," Springstein wrote. "Please give me new instructions soon so that I can order the product before Christmas." Repoxygen is based on a direct injection of an inactivated virus carrying the gene for EPO, or erythropoietin, a hormone beloved by athletic dopers seeking to artificially boost their red blood cells and aerobic capacity.

Predicted solar storm a looming danger

Photo proves that rover's key tool is functioning

OVER the next two years, as the sun reaches a peak in its 10-year activity cycle, scientists say there is a heightened risk that a whopping solar storm could knock out the power grids, satellites and communications on which we all rely. "Governments are taking it very seriously," says Mike Hapgood, a space weather specialist at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK. "These things may be very rare but when they happen, the consequences can be catastrophic." Hapgood said that solar storms are increasingly being put on the national risk registers used for disaster planning, alongside other rare but devastating events like tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. The statistics support this, he said. There is a roughly 12 per cent chance of a major solar storm every decade, making them a one-in-a-hundred-year event. The last major one was over 150 years ago. The threat comes from the magnetically-charged plasma which the sun belches out in so-called coronal mass ejections. Like vast bubbles bursting off the sun's surface, they send millions of tonnes of gas racing through space that can engulf the earth with as little as one to three days warning. The geomagnetic storms they stoke can induce strong currents in national power grids that literally melt the expensive transformers that form the cornerstones of the system. "We have a way to go before we reach the point where the market accepts that this is a universal problem and gives the advantage to the guys who make a virtue of their ability to deal with space weather," said Hapgood.

By Irene Klotz NASA's newly-landed Mars science rover, Curiosity, snapped the first colour image of its surroundings while an orbiting sister probe photographed litter left behind during the rover's daring door-die descent to the surface, scientists said on Tuesday. Curiosity's colour image, taken with a dust cover still on the camera lens, shows the north wall and rim of Gale Crater, a vast basin where the nuclear-powered, six-wheeled rover touched down Sunday night after flying through space for more than eight months. The picture proved that one of the rover's key instruments, a camera known as the Mars Hand Lens Imager, or MAHLI, was in good working order affixed to the end of Curiosity's robot arm. Designed to take magnified, close-up images of rocks and other objects, or wide shots of landscapes, the camera currently remains stowed on the rover's deck. But once in full operation, scientists can use it to capture fine details with a resolution as high as 13.9 microns per pixel - several times finer than the width of a human hair. "It works. It's awesome. Can't wait to open it and see what else we can see," Curios-

An image taken by NASA's Mars rover Curiosity shows what lies ahead for the rover - its main science target, the 3.4 mile high Mount Sharp ity scientist Ken Edgett told reporters on Tuesday. The latest images were relayed to Earth during the rover's first full day on the Red Planet, following a descent through the Martian atmosphere and touchdown on Sunday night that NASA hailed as the most elaborate and challenging ever in robotic spaceflight. The $2.5 billion project is NASA's first astrobiology mission since the Viking probes of the 1970s, and the landing came as a much-welcome success for a space agency beleaguered by science budg-

et cuts and the recent cancellation of its 30-year-old space shuttle programme. The primary mission of Curiosity, touted as the first fullyequipped mobile laboratory ever sent to another world, is to search for evidence that the planet most similar to Earth now harbours, or once hosted, the key ingredients necessary for the evolution of microbial life. But mission controllers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California plan to put the rover and its instruments through several weeks of thorough checks and trial op-

erations before gradually beginning science exploration in earnest. They want to be sure the carsized vehicle and its sensitive components came through the tricky, jarring final leg of Curiosity's 352 million-mile (566 million-km) journey to Mars without damage. Encased in a protective capsule, the rover blasted into the Martian sky at 17 times the speed of sound and slowed itself using friction from steering through the thin atmosphere. Closer to the ground, the vessel was slowed further by

a giant, supersonic parachute before a jet backpack and flying "sky crane" took over to deliver Curiosity the last mile to the surface at 10:32 p.m. PDT on Sunday (1:32 a.m. EDT on Monday/0532 GMT on Monday). A day later, NASA's sharpeyed Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter surveyed the scene from a vantage point 186 miles (300 km) above the planet and found Curiosity's approach to Gale Crater littered with discarded equipment used to position the rover near a towering mountain rising from the crater floor.

Ayia Napa youth will rock you!

Brace yourselves, rockers and metalheads alike: the island’s most prominent rock and metal festival is hitting Napa’s shores for the third consecutive year, and hitting it rough. Organised by the Ayia Napa Youth Council, it’s dubbed as “a festival for the youth, by the youth and for whoever feels young”. Founded in 2010, the Youth Festival developed as a way of engaging young people in modern culture and helping them realise that they may acquire their own stage presence or role in the crowd. After announcing details about the event’s maiden flight on Facebook, over 2000 people joined the page. “The reception we have had from Greece and Cyprus is amazing”, acknowledged the organisers on their page on the popular social networking site. Artists and music groups from all over the island contacted the council to perform or even help to organise certain festival constituents and activities. The bands lined up will undoubtedly blow up the stage; there are a minimum of 20 confirmed groups rounded up from Malta, Greece and Cyprus. Renowned acts such as Colorblind from Malta, folk metal band MethyS0s from

Cyprus, Nightstalker from Greece and Greek rock idol Vasilis Papaconstantinou are just a few of the acts. The festival in previous years has hosted names OFt the likes of Sabaton, Rotting Christ and Stratovarius. This year, the panel in charge has confirmed that there will be stands for band merchandise, at a usual 10-15 euros per T-shirt. It’s going to be a bustling weekend at the Ayia Napa stadium as apart from musical acts on stage, the vibrant youth buzz can partake in other parallel activities from Supercross races, skateboard tournaments and car drifts. “The entire youth of Cyprus will lend a dynamic presence in Ayia Napa,” assure the organisers on the festival website www.ayianapites.com. Even an artsy and more mellow part of the local youth has a place at the festival, as they can duel between themselves at planned chess tournaments and stimulate crowd interest by contributing to graffiti walls. Conveniently, Napa’s first international beer festival is on the way and will emerge as a compadre to the events. Lagers and draughts from over 20 different countries will be brought to the Stadium. What better way to kick off a

warm late summer’s night? Over 4000 attendees are expected to liven up the venue each of the nights, as opposed to last year’s 7,000. Unsurprisingly, due to limited funding for the event, purse strings have been tightened and it is no longer free entry. Tickets are now selling for €20 a night, which is indubitably a bargain, considering what you are paying for. Approximately a quarter of ticket proceeds are going to charitable causes and the organisers are hoping to break even. It is significant to note that all efforts were

made voluntarily and funded primarily by the municipality. So: strap on your seatbelts and find yourselves a ride; for the last weekend of August, Napa is the place to be. Third Ayia Napa Youth Festival Largest rock/metal festival in Cyprus featuring live bands, exhibits, beer festival and more. August 24-25. INDIA’S SOL A villager dries a cloth under an electric pole powered by solar energy

By Jo Winterbottom WORKERS downed tools, kids strained to see their schoolbooks under the faint glow of aged kerosene lamps and adults struggled to carry out the most basic of household chores. The arrival of solar power last year has changed all that. On a humid evening, fans whirr, children sit crosslegged to study their Hindi and mother-of-seven Sunderbai is delighted people can actually see what they are eating and drinking. “When it was dark, we used to drink water with insects

in, but now we can see insects, so we filter it and then drink,” said the 30-year-old, whose flame-orange sari and gold nose ring are small defiances in a life close to the poverty line. Meerwada, on a dirt track rutted by rains and outside the reach of the national grid, struck lucky when US solar firm SunEdison picked it to test out business models and covered the hefty initial expense of installing hitech solar panels in the heart of the village. But rapidly falling costs and improved access to financing for would-be customers could encourage the

Covering initial investment on solar is key as, in a country with around 300 days of sunshine a year, subsequent costs are largely limited to maintenance and repairs spread of such systems down the line, while simpler solar schemes are already making profits in areas where the grid either does not extend or provides only patchy

power. And Asia’s third-largest economy, where just this week hundreds of millions were left without electricity in one of the world’s worst blackouts, needs all the help it can get in easing the strain on its overburdened power infrastructure. The country’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) hopes solar systems that bypass the national grid will account for just under one per cent of total installed capacity by 2022. Still a mere flicker, but that 4,000-megawatt (MW) goal would be way up from 80 MW now when so-called off-grid solar systems are still out of reach for most of the country’s rural poor. Large-scale solar facilities that directly feed the grid, such as those at an over 600 MW solar park recently launched with great fanfare in Gujarat, have been gaining traction for some time. But potential growth in off-grid solar power offers a ray of hope to the around 40 per cent of India’s 1.2 billion population that the renewable power ministry estimates lack access to energy. People like those in the village just 200 metres away from Meerwada, who rely on a hand

Life in the remote Indian vi grind to a standstill as pump for water and cook by torchlight as hungry goats creep up on them out of the gloom. Covering initial investment on solar is key as, in a country with around 300 days of sunshine a year, subsequent costs are largely limited to maintenance and repairs. “The high up-front capital cost is one of the adoption barriers (for solar projects),” said Krister Aanesen, associate principal at McKinsey & Company’s renewable energy division. “Although diesel is more expensive on a full-cost basis, you defer cash outlay for the fuel ... the cash outlays are different and that’s one of the key challenges.” Small-scale direct current

(DC) systems from Karnataka in the south to Assam in the north-east have already cleared that hurdle, supplying simple lights and mobile phone chargers at 100-200 rupees ($1.80-$3.60)

AR VILLAGE

A boy charges his mobile phone from an electric board powered by solar energy inside his house at Meerwada village

llage of Meerwada used to s darkness descended per month per light – prices that typically allow installers to cover their initial costs in time. Private company Mera Gao Power fits roof-top solar panels and then transmission to

other houses who pay about 40 rupees to connect, with costs thereafter about 25 rupees per week, said Nikhil Jaisinghani, one of the firm’s founders. That means it should currently take about 12 months to repay panel installation expenses of about $2,500 for 100 houses, though the cost is set to fall. Initial expenses are far more onerous on more comprehensive mini-grids like the one in Meerwada, which includes a room full of batteries that can store enough electricity to provide roundthe-clock supply to the village and which has recently started powering water pumps. California-based SunEdison reckons it cost $100,000-

$125,000 to build the 14 kilowatt (KW) plant in Meerwada, an expense that would have demanded fees way too high for the 400 or so villagers, whose per capita income is about $250 a year. The firm expects initial capital costs to come down enough to make alternating current (AC) systems affordable in villages like Meerwada in a few years, with improving technology and fierce competition reducing hardware costs, while enhanced battery storage driven by the auto industry’s push on electric cars is also helping. SunEdison, which sells solar power plants and services worldwide to commercial, government and utility customers, has over 50 MW of interconnected solar electricity in India, with projects ranging from small rooftop installations to part of the Gujarat solar park. “Three years ago, the panel price was $2.60 per watt. Today it is 75 cents a watt. I don’t think it will halve in the next few years but I clearly see 50 cents a watt by 2014/15,” said Ahmad Chatila, president and chief executive of MEMC Electronic, SunEdison’s parent company. In the meantime, the government is offering 30 per cent of the project cost and in some cases low-interest loans for solar power systems under its Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission policy launched in 2010. But that still means systems are beyond the reach of many poor, rural customers, so some solar companies are putting up the 20 per cent

deposits on loans required by banks or acting as guarantors for customers who are outside the conventional banking system. Back in Meerwada, which lies in central India’s Madhya Pradesh, the villagers have added an unexpected ingredient to the cost equation – frugality. Lights even now are turned on only when darkness falls and fans target the youngest children and the elderly, saving on power use. Only the village leader, Sampat Bai, has been able to afford a television but it’s open to all and her bare-

Manorbai, a 30-something mother who is now making more money by working at

PICK OF THE DAY

Real Steel (Novacinema1, 17.40) Maybe it’s just me. Every year, it seems, there’s a family film with an excitable kid, a weary, reluctant mentor and some kind of violent sport which I respond to beyond all expectation (and, perhaps, beyond all reason). Two years ago it wa The Karate Kid, last year it was Real Steel a boisterous hybrid of Rocky, E.T. and all those films (The Champ being perhaps the prototype) where a burned-out has-been is redeemed by the adoration of a young boy. Admittedly there’s not much adoration in the early scenes between Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) and his 11year-old son Max (Dakota Goyo) - and with good reason, because Charlie isn’t much of a father. He’s reckless, irresponsible and notably absent from Max’s life, in fact his only interest in the kid lies in waiving his rights (at a price) so the boy can be adopted by his aunt after the death of his mother. You should spend some time with him, suggests the aunt. “With the kid?” replies Charlie, stunned by the very idea. Charlie is better with robots than kids (or human beings in general) - the film’s premise being that, in the near future, robot boxing has become a massive sport. This is a kind of communal, liveaction videogame where giant robots fight each other while handlers operate them by remote-

control - and Charlie is one such handler, once a champion but now fallen on hard times. His life is a mess, but he gets a chance at redemption when he teams up with Max plus a broken-down robot called Atom (he looks a bit like the robot in The Iron Giant) who’s able to copy people’s movements, making him quasi-human. The title makes it sound like the robot’s going to talk or something, but in fact the hunk of steel never becomes ‘real’. This isn’t sci-fi, it’s a scrappy boxing movie with some bone-crunching - or steel-crunching - action scenes and amusing byplay between Charlie and the hyperactive kid (“People love that kid thing. How old are you, 9, 10?” riffs our hero airily, getting Max onstage with Atom). There’s no reason why it should work, then again there’s no reason why it shouldn’t: Hollywood’s always been good at exuberant crowd-pleasers, it’s just that they usually ruin them with incoherent action (hello, Transformers) or excessive sentimentality. Real Steel does bog down for a moment, when Charlie (inevitably) apologises for being a bad dad, but only for a moment: this is great formula fun with a nifty premise and a shameless climax, and I mostly loved it. But maybe it’s just me. Made in 2011.

FILM PICKS

SATELLITE

The Social Network (Novacinema4, 21.00) A masterpiece? Maybe - though more in the fi rst hour, when Jesse Eisenberg rules the screen as arrogant, socially awkward Mark Zuckerberg (who creates a social networking site he calls “Facemash”, and later “The Facebook”), than in the second hour when Zuckerberg recedes and Justin Timberlake takes over as fast-talking Sean Parker. It’s deliberate, of course, showing how Facebook spun away from its creator (or co-creator), but the fi lm is at its best in those early scenes, when the speed and fluidity of David Fincher’s direction blend with the witty dialogue and Eisenberg’s performance though it’s not really ‘about’ Facebook, even then. Andrew Garfield (a.k.a. Spider-Man) is the friend he falls out with - and any irony involving Facebook ‘friends’ vs. real-life friends is entirely intentional. Made in 2010.

American History X (LTV3, 22.00) Why is this fi lm so popular? Can it be because so many people are fascinated by anything neo-Nazi? It’s currently No. 36 on the all-time Top 250 at the Internet Movie Database with 365,000 people having voted it among the best fi lms ever - yet it’s really just a glorified music video, crude, superficial and fairly enjoyable. Edward Norton is our hero, a teenage white supremacist who sees the error of his ways and tries to prevent his hero-worshipping younger brother (Edward Furlong) from following in his footsteps - and Norton does his best, but the style is hysterical. Characters are reduced to splashy symbols, choirs emote on the soundtrack and director Tony Kaye uses slow-motion as if unaware that anyone’s ever used it before. Mostly in black and white, both literally and metaphorically. Made in 1998.

Yo, Tambien (Novacinema1, 22.00) Yo, Tambien! How ya doin’, my man? Actually there’s no-one called Tambien in this Spanish drama, and the title means ‘Me Too’ - doubtless referring to Daniel (Pablo Pineda), a young man who has Down’s Syndrome but wants to be just like everyone else. He becomes the fi rst European with Down’s to graduate from university, gets a job then embarks on a romance with Laura (Lola Duenas), “a neurotic but ‘normal’ co-worker”, thereby “proving that everyone is equal in their need for, and ability to feel, love,” as per the synopsis. Sounds very earnest and the trailer doesn’t really help, alternating slushy romantic montages with raw emotion (“I’m not a child! I’m a man!”) and bits of special pleading (“You make me feel normal”; “Why do you want to be normal?”). Still, it won awards at various festivals. In Spanish; made in 2009.

ARIES March 21 - April 20

LEO July 23 - August 22

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21

Venus forges a quite stunning angle to Neptune. However, neither planet is located in very friendly areas of your Solar Horoscope, so how will this pan out for you? Well, an apparently low key conversation with someone can provide a lot of reassurance. You may be surprised of just how supportive they are. The exchange of kindnesses is key.

You can be an intensely proud person, even if you often disguise this under a polished and charming exterior. Yet it may prove a little harder to mask your true feelings today, but then why should you? The issue is that someone may seem to get beyond your defences but the question is who. The trick is not to get into pointless debates and arguments.

Think back to two months ago. Something which happened then could finally get resolved, especially around a legal or contractual matter. In fact, if this was in any way about finances, a welcome improvement in your fortunes can now follow. If this doesn’t happen right away, keep going because a windfall can emerge any time over the next four weeks.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

VIRGO August 23 - September 23

CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20

Do I sense a collective sigh in you and other Bulls now that Mercury has ended its rewind? If so, it wouldn’t be a surprise and with Venus now highlighting your social interaction on an everyday basis for the next four weeks, you can feel more at ease, and much less defensive than you have of late. Also things you have bottled out, can just ease out.

Someone is set to have quite an impact upon you. This person may have a rather hard to pinpoint persona but that can make them all the more intriguing. This doesn’t have to be a love attraction, it may be through a shared love of culture, history or philosophy. But whoever you connect with now, the more they break the mould, the better for you.

It may be time to let bygones be bygones. Even if you only recently you couldn’t see a way forwards, there really may be nothing more to be gained by trying to unpick an issue, especially in a relationship. If you can agree to disagree, a very worthy thing to do, it may be best for you both. Look to salute one another’s strengths and move on.

GEMINI May 22 - June 21

LIBRA September 24 - October 23

AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19

Your imagination is often fertile. You are the zodiac sign of ideas, so something is often percolating away at the back of your mind. But now you can add a little more to this and that is embracing your emotions and melding these with your personal expression. Books or films which are sentimental may draw you or you may listen to your most loved songs.

Can you hear the thundering of the hooves on the horizon? Fanciful, well maybe. But Mars in your sign is fast closing on Saturn, that’s been the cause of some consternation for you. Mars is going to stiffen your resolve, especially where you feel you’re needing to tough it out. But your ruler Venus also reminds you that grace is your greatest asset.

Seek to untangle any tie which has gone awry due to a misunderstanding. With Mars growing in power in your situation there could be a tendency to want to escape anything which isn’t free running, but few relationships are without the odd hiccup. Rather than cut and run, look to better understand the other person’s viewpoint. It can unpick this.

CANCER June 22 - July 22

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22

PISCES February 20 - March 20

You may have been battling a very subtle, but no less potent sense of loss in recent months. This period may have even seen some relationships under strain, with you feeling less fluent around speaking or writing. Now you can almost feel a palpable shift. You are intact, if a little wiser, but your joie de vivre can certainly return, and how!

A mixture of finesse and quiet authority can take you far. You don’t often lack in the latter, but a deft touch can be as effective as a more forceful one, especially in all worldly matters, where sometimes we have to interact with people we wouldn’t choose to be friends with. The Moon also encourages you to carefully watch how others are feeling.

Things can just seem to go better from now. You can feel less irritable and in turn this will attract better responses to you. If you are single, the arrival of the slinky Venus in your sector of love and joys, can do wonders for your sense of attractiveness, and see some interesting invites head your way. If you yearn to revive your romantic life, a good time to do so.

Sport Ferdinand offers to help Bolt fulfil his Man United dream Jamaican: people think I am joking but I am very accomplished MANCHESTER United defender Rio Ferdinand has offered Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt help in getting a trial with the Premier League football club. Ferdinand told the 100 metres gold medallist he would put in a good word with manager Alex Ferguson after Bolt said he would jump at the chance of playing for one of the most famous clubs in the world. “@usainbolt if you want that trial at Man Utd shout me, I’ll speak to the boss!! Well done in 100m, waiting for you to smash the 200m now!” the former England captain tweeted. Bolt, the fastest man in the world, knows the United players after he took part in a sprint through Manchester’s streets a few years ago and helped then-Manchester player Cristiano Ronaldo with his sprint training. “People think I am joking when I say that I would like to play for Manchester United,” British media quoted Bolt as saying. “But if Alex Ferguson called me up and said, ‘OK, let’s do this, come and have a trial and see if you are good enough’ it would be impossible for me to say ‘no’. “I would not take up the

Baghdatis beaten by Cilic at Toronto Masters By Nemanja Bjedov

Give me a chance, Fergie! the world’s fastest man visited the Manchester United training ground in 2009 challenge if I didn’t think I was good enough. I am a very accomplished player and know I could make a difference. I would be the fastest player in the team - but I can play as well.” Bolt warned Ferguson he will have to be quick though as the sprinter is only in Britain “for a few more days”. “If Alex Ferguson wants to give me a call he knows where I am,” the Jamaican

was quoted as saying. He retweeted Ferdinand’s offer, and replied: “After the Olympics we work on that... lol..thanks man.” Ferdinand followed up his invite by tweeting: “We’ll put you upfront, just run behind defences + (Paul) scholes will find you but #CanYouFinish.” Scholes is a veteran United midfielder. Bolt would not be the first

sprinter to look to try another professional sport. Britain’s Dwain Chambers, who competed at the London Games in the 100 metres, tried to relaunch his career in American football in 2006 following a two-year athletics ban for failing a drugs test. Another British sprinter at the London Olympics switched the other way. Adam Gemili, who also competed in the 100 metres, turned to ath-

letics after playing for English fourth tier football side Dagenham & Redbridge. One United player, however, has jokingly suggested Bolt should stick to his day job. “He’d obviously add a bit of speed to the team! But they are different sports. I think he’s best staying on the track!” England striker Wayne Rooney was quoted as saying on Manchester United’s website.

APOEL, Omonia, Anorthosis gear up for Europa clashes By Nemanja Bjedov

No way through: Omonia held mighty Red Star to a goalless draw in Belgrade last week

ANORTHOSIS are in charge of their Europa League third qualifying round tie against Dila Gori of Georgia, while APOEL and Omonia have nervy second legs in store for them this evening against Aalesunds and Red Star Belgrade respectively. “We had a tough game in Georgia and now we must focus on finishing the job on the pitch,” said Anorthosis manager Ronny Levy. “I was satisfied with the way we played in the first leg but I’m sure there is room for improvement,” added the Israeli, whose team hold a 1-0 first leg advantage ahead of the match at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca at 8pm. APOEL’s game against

Aalesunds will kick off in the Norwegian coastal city at the same time, where the Nicosia giants need to protect a slender 2-1 victory earned last Thursday in Nicosia in order to progress. “The artificial pitch is definitely something new to us but I am fully confident in our coach and players and I believe that it will not affect them. We are definitely a better team than them, but unfortunately we did not manage to get a clear advantage after the first game in Cyprus,” said APOEL vicepresident Antis Polydorou. Omonia, the third Cypriot representative in the Europa League, will take on Serbian powerhouse Red Star Belgrade at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia at 7pm. “After the 0-0 in Belgrade we expect a difficult game

in Nicosia,” stated Red Star manager Robert Prosinecki. “We analysed the way Omonia play and I believe that we are prepared for them better this time. Unlike in Belgrade they will have to open up and chase victory and this should leave us more space in midfield, so we will try to utilise that by dominating play in the middle of the pitch,” he added. Omonia’s Portuguese midfielder Bruno Aguiar wants his side to make history by reaching the group stage for the first time: “I think it will be a good game. It is a good opportunity for us. All the players expect a lot from this game as we are aware that Omonia have never reached the group stage in any of the European competitions. We are concentrated and I hope that we have what it takes.”

MARCOS Baghdatis yesterday crashed out of the prestigious Toronto Masters to Croatia’s Marin Cilic, losing their second round encounter 7-5, 6-3. The Cypriot started the match well as he broke Cilic in the third service game to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Croat broke back immediately and then kept his serve intact to push himself ahead 3-2. Both players then held serve until the 12th game when Cilic converted his third break point of the set to clinch the opener 7-5. Baghdatis fired eight aces in the first set and won 82 percent of the points on his first serve but that was not enough to stop the 23-yearold world number 15. Cilic then built on his momentum at the start of the second set and broke the Cypriot once again in the second game, while comfortably protecting his serve on two occasions to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Baghdatis did not give up though and he tried hard to get back into the match, but the towering Croat didn’t make any serious mistakes on his way to a straight sets win. Cilic will take on fifthseeded Serbian Janko Tipsarevic next, who beat Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-6, 6-4 in his second round encounter, while Baghdatis travels to Cincinnati where he will take part in another Masters Series tournament - the Western & Southern Open. The Cypriot, who is currently ranked 45, had his best result in Cincinnati in 2010 when he lost in the semi-finals to Roger Federer, after previously beating Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals. At last season’s edition of the event he was eliminated in the first round by American James Blake.

Brazil move a step closer to elusive football gold medal

Kangaroo condoms get a hop on organisers

Five-time World Cup winners have been trying to win title for 60 years

By Belinda Goldsmith

By Mike Collett BRAZIL’S’ dream of winning an elusive Olympic football gold came a step closer when they thrashed South Korea 3-0 in the semi-finals at Old Trafford. The victory sets up a title decider against Mexico at Wembley Stadium on Saturday after the Mexicans beat Japan 3-1 in their last four clash. Brazil, whose obsession with winning gold is matched by few other countries, won with second-half goals from forward Leandro Damiao, now tournament top scorer with six, after a 38th minute opener from Romulo in front of a 69,389 crowd. Damiao said: “I’m so happy, we have made a huge effort to reach the final. We are here to win the gold medal – it was a tough match but we are a great team. We are Brazil – we are here for the gold.” Defender Rafael, who plays for Manchester United, added: “It was an amazing feeling to be playing for Brazil on my home ground. “We were confident, the coach was confident – and the final will be different to every other match we have played.” The pre-tournament favourites, who have been trying to win the Olympic title for 60 years, coming closest with silver in 1984 and 1988, have now won all five games at the London Olympics scoring three goals in each with a tally of 15 to 5. South Korea caused them

The Samba Boys thrashed South Korea in the semi-finals to set up a title clash with Mexico, who beat Japan problems at the start and had an early penalty claim turned down when Juan Jesus’s foot clumsily connected with Ji Dong-won’s face in the six-yard box but, apart from a few chances from Ji, they never really threatened. Korea now face Japan in what is likely to be a lively battle for the bronze medal at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium tomorrow at 9.45pm while Brazil will hope to be crowned Olympic champions at last against Mexico on Saturday at 5pm.

The Koreans, who squeezed into the semis after beating hosts Britain on penalties, defended stubbornly until the 38th minute, showing why they had only conceded two goals all tournament. But Korea lost the ball on the halfway line to Neymar and Brazil, who became more imperious as the game wore on, broke away with the playmaker feeding Oscar, who glided past a line of hapless defenders before finding Romulo on his right. He planted the ball into

a near-post gap with goalkeeper Lee Bum-young arriving too late to get a hand or leg to it. Damiao capitalised on more good work by Neymar to make it 2-0 after 57 minutes and the game was settled seven minutes later when the forward took advantage of more poor Korean defending for his second and Brazil’s third goal. Brazil, who first competed in the Olympics football tournament in 1952, also have two bronze medals

from 1996 and 2008. Their resolve to win gold in London was strengthened after arch-rivals Argentina failed to qualify for the finals having won the previous two Olympics tournaments. Mano Menezes’s young side, who are expected to form the backbone of the team at the World Cup in Brazil in two years time, now have the perfect stage at Wembley – which Menezes has described as “the temple of football” – to end their long wait.

Sally Pearon’s 100m hurdles win gave Australia their first track gold since Cathy Freeman’s emotional win 12 years ago

SALLY Pearson fulfilled a dream that was inspired 12 years ago when Cathy Freeman won 400 metres gold in front of more than 100,000 screaming Australians at the Sydney Olympics. A dozen years and a lot of hard work later Pearson won the 100 metres hurdles title at the London Games, appropriately handing Australia their first track gold medal since Freeman’s emotional win. Runner-up at the Beijing Games four years ago and world champion in Daegu last year, this was the crowning achievement for the 25-yearold Queenslander. “I’ve wanted this ever since I saw Cathy Freeman win gold at the Sydney Olympics,” Pearson told reporters. “I thought ‘how do I do that? how do I become the best athlete in the world?’” “Winning a gold medal is not easy but I believed in myself,

especially over the last four years. “After I won the silver in Beijing, I knew I had the talent and self-belief to be the best in the world. “This is everything I have ever wanted and more.” Pearson has enjoyed a dominant two years in which she lost just once in each season, beaten in Brussels at the end of 2011 and losing to Kellie Wells in her last race before the London Games. The Australian’s self-belief never wavered. “I wasn’t having a good day in the office in London and it was very hard knowing I had won so many races and Kellie got me on the line,” she said. “At the same time I knew that my preparation was fantastic and I knew that one race couldn’t stop me from winning an Olympic gold medal.” When Beijing Olympic champion Dawn Harper ran a personal best of 12.46 seconds in the semi-finals on Tuesday, it

only strengthened Pearson’s resolve and she ran her own season’s best time (12.39) in her heat. Even when she was pushed all the way to the line by Wells and Harper in the final, she said she never really thought she had lost. “I had a little panic for a moment that I hadn’t won it but I knew in my heart I had and it was just a matter of confirming it on the screen,” she said. Pearson, who finished in an Olympic record time of 12.35 to beat Harper by two hundredths of a second, said even the teeming London rain had not bothered her. There had also been no thought at all about bettering Yordanka Donkova’s 24-yearold world record of 12.21. Her familiar grim “race face” now replaced by a wide smile, Pearson once again summed up her philosophy. “It’s just really belief for me, it’s just believing in yourself,” she concluded. “Giving it crack, knowing that you can do it.”

OLYMPIC organisers are investigating how a bucket of Australian-tagged condoms found its way into the athletes’ village without official consent. Australian BMX cyclist Caroline Buchanan tweeted a photograph from the athletes’ village of a container of condoms with a placard reading “Kangaroos condoms, for the gland downunder” with the picture of a boxing kangaroo. She joked that the container seemed to back up rumours that the athletes’ village becomes a hot bed of activity as thousands of competitors complete their events and celebrate after years of working to get to the Olympics. “Haha, the rumours are true. Olympic village,” tweeted Buchanan, whose BMX contest began yesterday. Barcelona started the trend of supplying free condoms to athletes when the Spanish city held the Olympics in 1992, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) endorsing the move to help AIDS awareness and prevention. The handouts came with health information. The London Olympic organisers, LOCOG, have provided 150,000 free condoms in dispensers for the 10,800 athletes at the Games. They are supplied by Durex, part of British consumer goods group Reckitt Benckiser, which paid for the supply rights. A LOCOG spokeswoman said they were trying to find out who distributed the socalled Kangaroo condoms, with the container shown to hold condoms from Durex rivals Ansell, an Australian company and Pasante, a private British company. She said athletes and officials were allowed to bring products into the village for their personal use. “We will look into this and ask that they are not handed out to other athletes because Durex are our supplier,” said the spokeswoman. Organisers tightly control which brands can be promoted at the Games, striking sponsorship deals with a limited number of companies and trying to stop non-sponsors from getting free publicity on the back of the Olympics. A spokeswoman for Ansell said her company knew nothing about the issue and it could well be a prank. A Durex spokeswoman said Durex was “proud to be supplying free condoms for the Olympics Games” but declined to elaborate further. The number of condoms supplied at London tops the 100,000 made available to athletes in Beijing four years ago. In Sydney in 2000, organisers took delight in having to order 20,000 more condoms after the initial allocation of 70,000 ran out.

Korean ‘Mowgli’ is king of the Greco jungle By Peter Griffiths

Kim Hyeonwoo’s (top) bruising route to the final owed more to the Rocky films than Disney

A SOUTH Korean wrestler nicknamed ‘Mowgli’ won gold in the Greco-Roman wrestling at the London Games, overcoming a badly swollen eye that left him struggling to see properly. Kim Hyeonwoo, 23, beat Hungary’s Tamas Lorincz in the 66kg final, the third lightest category in one of the world’s oldest and most physical sports. With his mop of black hair

and winning smile, he bears more than a passing resemblance to the little boy raised by wolves in the Disney adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic stories, The Jungle Book. “In my high school, I used to run around in my bare feet, so my friends gave the nickname of Mowgli,” he said. “I’m very happy with that, even though my foreign friends in the (wrestling) fights keep calling me Mowgli, Mowgli.” Kim’s bruising route to the final owed more to the Rocky

films than Disney, however. He suffered a nasty blow to the right eye in the first qualifying round and it had closed by the time he reached the final. “I couldn’t open the eye, I couldn’t see,” he said. “The swelling got bigger and bigger as I went on.” After winning the final, Kim knelt on the wrestling mat and kissed his country’s flag as a packed arena cheered. There was more success for Iran when Ghasem Rezaei won the Greco-Roman heavyweight class, taking his

Salimi crowned the strongest Iran claim one-two in ultimate test of strength By William James

IN BRIEF

IRAN’S Behdad Salimikordasiabi won gold in the headline event of the London Olympic weightlifting competition to claim the title of strongest man at the Games. His fellow countryman Sajjad Anoushiravani Hamlabad took the silver to seal a onetwo that delighted a crowed packed with Iranian supporters and asserted the country’s dominance in the Games’ ultimate test of strength. “In Iran I know they’re all partying in the street already,” Salimi said smiling and holding a permanently ringing mobile phone in one hand. There was a party atmosphere in the ExCel arena too where dozens of Iranian flags were unfurled while whistles blew and air horns parped to the beat of the chant ‘Ir-an, Ir-an’. After receiving their medals, the lifters left the platform to embrace friends in the crowd accompanied by the hugely popular two-time Olympic champion Hossein Rezazadeh, now president of the country’s weightlifting federation. The 22-year-old world and Olympic champion, known as ‘Salimi’, took victory with two lifts to spare when the

challenge of Russia’s Ruslan Albegov faded. “I represented the last opportunity for the Russian team. I tried the best I could,” Albegov said, reflecting on a disappointing weightlifting competition that returned five silver medals and a bronze, but no gold, from their 10-strong squad. The winning total of 455kg comprised a 208kg lift in the snatch round and a 247kg clean and jerk. That put him 6kg ahead of silver medallist, training partner and fellow countryman Anoushiravani who

joined him on the platform at the end of the competition to hoist an Iranian flag. Salimi was tied with Russia’s Albegov at the halfway stage after both completed snatch lifts of 208kg, but the Iranian was too strong in the clean and jerk discipline where his first lift proved enough to beat off the rest of the field. The crowd roared their approval as Salimi then attempted a 264kg clean and jerk that would have taken the world record from Rezazadeh, who was cheering on from the technical area by

the stage. However the lift proved too much and after failing his first of two possible attempts, with gold already secured, he unbuckled his belt and remained on the platform to lap up the applause of a crowd featuring a large and noisy Iranian contingent. Salimi later told reporters that a lengthy gap between lifts had allowed his body to go cold and affected his ability to make the lift. “My first goal was to get the gold medal. I came here to get the gold medal and maybe in the future I will go for

the record,” he said. Beijing Olympic champion Matthias Steiner did not finish the event after receiving a blow to the head from the falling bar when his arms buckled on a 196kg snatch attempt. Germany’s Steiner left the stage on his feet, raising a hand to acknowledge the cheers of the crowd. “He is OK but was not able to continue with the competition for medical reasons. I do not think it is very serious, but the doctors are checking him over,” said Germany’s Olympic mission chief Michael Vesper.

country’s wrestling gold tally to three. The Iranian, who only managed 16th place in Beijing four years ago, beat Russia’s Rustam Totrov in the final of the 96kg weight class. Jubilant Iranian supporters roared and waved their nation’s flags as Rezaei kissed and hugged his coach in celebration. “To see all the Iranians inside the stadium and back home, to bring smiles to their faces is the happiest moment of my life,” said Rezaei.

Red-faced Austrians bemoan drought WINTER can’t come soon enough for Austrian sports fans lamenting a summer Olympics that has yet to produce a single medal for their country. Austria is used to raking in winter Olympic golds in Alpine skiing, its traditional strength, but still has not failed to win a summer medal since 1964. “With no medals, Austria faces the biggest Olympics bust in history. Embarrassing: at the moment we are limping behind the washout of Tokyo in 1964,” the Oesterreich tabloid moaned, resorting to comparing the number of fourth-, fifth- and sixthplace finishes the country produced nearly half a century ago. After the men’s 49er sailors won the medal race but narrowly missed overall bronze yesterday, Austrian hopes boil down to the final of the women’s pair canoe sprint today, which features world champions Yvonne Schuring and Viktoria Schwarz. Norbert Darabos, the minister for sport, has promised action. “I am going to put support of sports on a completely new footing,” he said. “The self-satisfaction of certain athletes here in London bothers me,” he added. “It is great when some athletes declare how beautiful life in the Olympic village is, but athletic success has to be the priority.”

‘Lazarus’ Makhloufi feted to win 1,500 metres

Attar becomes first Saudi female track Olympian

China’s men complete table tennis title sweep

FROM the moment Algerian Taoufik Makhloufi was controversially reinstated into Tuesday’s Olympic 1,500 metres final, reporters began boning up on a man upon whom fate had clearly shone its divine light. So, against the odds but, paradoxically, to nobody’s great surprise, the 24-year-old duly roared to victory in the traditional blue riband 1,500m event of the Games with American Leonel Manzano and Moroccan Abdalaati Iguider trailing in his wake. Makhloufi described his reinstatement as “the will of God”, when in fact it was the will of the IAAF who were persuaded that the Algerian had been suffering from a mystery injury when he dropped out of his 800m heat on Monday.

SARAH Attar became the first female track and field athlete to represent Saudi Arabia at an Olympics when she competed in the 800 metres heats yesterday. The 19-year-old, who wore a white head cover, a longsleeved green top and black leggings and sported luminous green running spikes, received a generous ovation from a capacity crowd at the Olympic stadium as she trailed in last of the eight runners. “It’s an incredible experience,” Attar, who has dual US citizenship and is a student at Pepperdine University in LA, said. “It is the hugest honour to be here to represent the women of Saudi Arabia.”

CHINA completed a clean sweep of table tennis at the Olympics as their men’s team took gold by beating South Korea 3-0 in the best-of-five contest. Ma Long and Zhang Jike won their individual ties before the latter and Wang Hao earned victory in the doubles. China have now taken gold in the men’s and women’s individual events as well as the men’s and women’s team events. Germany, who won silver in Beijing four years ago, claimed bronze this time around after beating Hong Kong 3-1.

Third time lucky: Allyson Felix of the US blew away a high-quality field to win the women’s 200 metres after two straight silvers in Beijing and Athens

Felix ends heartache A

LLYSON Felix was able to put the disappointment of two consecutive silver medals in the women’s 200 metres behind her as she claimed the gold medal she so desired in last night’s eagerly-awaited sprint showdown. Felix took silver in the event in Athens and Beijing, but led from start to finish to run a time of 21.88, finishing ahead of Shelly-Ann FraserPryce and Carmelita Jeter. The race was billed as Jamaica versus the USA with defending champion Veronica Campbell Brown and 100 metres gold medalist FraserPryce in the Jamaican corner. Meanwhile world 100 metre champion Jeter, 400 metres champion Sanya Richards Ross and Felix, who took silver in Beijing and was second in last year’s World Championships, were representing the USA. Campbell Brown had beaten Felix in the last two Olympics and was looking to make history by becoming the first woman to win gold in the same event in three consecutive Games. As it was she only briefly threatened before dropping off the pace after coming off the bend. Felix looked like a woman

with a mission throughout the race, while Fraser-Pryce proved she has been working on her stamina as she was able to hold off Jeter in the last 50 metres. Earlier in the evening, Usain Bolt edged ever nearer to the legendary status he craves after cruising into the 200 metres final with contemptuous ease. While many would already consider the Jamaican superstar a legend for winning triple gold in Beijing and defending his 100m title on Sunday, Bolt himself insists he also has to retain his 200m title. And the 25-year-old looks an increasingly certain bet to do just that, effectively winning his semi-final before halfway and almost jogging down the home straight to win in 20.18 seconds.

Team-mate Yohan Blake was the fastest qualifier after also slowing down markedly in winning the opening semifinal in 20.01 seconds, but Bolt has no doubts he will put his training partner in his place once again tonight. “No doubt whatsoever,” Bolt said. “I’m ready, this is my favourite event, so I’m looking forward to it.” Once again the main stadium was packed with enthusiastic crowds yesterday and mostly sold-out Olympic venues have underlined how the Games have caught the imagination of a public spurred on by Britain’s best gold medal haul for 104 years. The women’s football final between the United States and Japan at Wembley today is set to break the Olympic attendance record with

a crowd of at least 83,000, beating the previous benchmark of 76,489 in 1996 in Athens, Georgia. International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said he was satisfied with the way the Games had gone. “All in all I would say these are very good Games and I am a very happy man,” he told reporters after being asked whether London had delivered on its promises. “I think everybody is very happy. I will have attended all sports by the end of the Games, the federations are very happy about the venues. Everybody is really ecstatic about the Olympic village.” Belgian Rogge, a former Olympic yachtsman, said broadcasters had reported increased ratings while the success of the home team, with Britain enjoying their best medal haul since 1908, was also a very important factor. The opening ceremony attracted an estimated global TV audience of 900 million people, with US broadcaster NBC notching up record viewing figures across the Atlantic. Rogge has so far visited 22 of the 26 sports with the remainder on his schedule for the final four days. “There is also the success

of the home team and that is very important,” he said. London won the right to host the Olympics in 2005 with the promise of delivering Olympic Games that would revamp part of the city’s once run-down East End. A day after winning the Olympics, however, the capital was hit by deadly bombing attacks that instantly raised security concerns. The sharp economic downturn from 2008 onwards further squeezed the budget with costs soaring to over 9.3 billion pounds, more than three times the initial estimate. Organisers opted to use several existing venues while also constructing some temporary ones in an effort to rein in costs. Legacy remained a constant slogan in their preparations but they have still to finalise the future use and ownership of the Olympic stadium after the 16-day sports extravaganza. The Games end with a closing ceremony on Sunday at the main stadium which will celebrate British music. George Michael, Muse and Ed Sheeran are confirmed to perform, while Adele, Madness, The Who and Elbow are all rumoured to be taking part.

CYPRUS champions AEL last night advanced to the play-off round of the UEFA Champions League after beating Partizan 1-0 in the second leg of their third qualifying round tie to complete a 2-0 aggregate victory in Belgrade. After a mistake by Partizan goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic when he tried to catch a ball that was going out for a goal-kick, the Spanish referee awarded the visitors a corner. Dede delivered the ball into the middle of the penalty area only for Stojkovic to punch it out. However, the ball went straight onto the head of one of AEL’s players who sent it back into the area and, fortunately for the Cypriots, it reached Dosa Junior who was in a perfect position to calmly slot home from close range after 23 minutes. Five minutes later, Carlos Clos Gómez sent off AEL’s Portuguese midfielder Jorge Monteiro for a second bookable offense, but the home team failed to take advantage of their numerical advantage and were unable to create any opportunities in the remaining 17 minutes of the half. Partizan manager Vladimir Vermezovic tried to change things during the interval as 17-year-old Nikola Ninkovic replaced the experienced Stefan Babovic in the middle of the park. Unfortunately for the Serbian side, Ninkovic failed to make an impact on the game and Vermezovic then took off club captain Sasa Ilic and introduced another forward in Libyan international Mohammad Za’abia. Za’abia actually went closest to scoring for the Serbians, but his long-range effort flew just outside Mathias Degra’s right-hand post twenty minutes from time. Partizan never looked capable of getting the result they needed as Pambos Christodoulou’s men knew exactly what was required to send AEL one step closer to the group stage of Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
