German minister drops bombshell Schaeuble doesn’t expect concrete negotiations with Cyprus until 2013 By George Psyllides

G

ERMAN Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said yesterday he did not expect concrete negotiations between Cyprus and international lenders to start before 2013, suggesting that the island has missed a November 12 deadline and could be at risk of running out of money before the end of the year. Speaking at a news conference in Berlin after a telephone conference with his eurozone counterparts, Schaeuble said there had not yet been any concrete negotiations with Cyprus on financial assistance and he did not expect them to commence until 2013. The unexpected comment flies in the face of everything the government has been stating publicly about the extent of progress in the negotiations and the expected return of the troika. It was quick to respond yesterday, repeating that it was having substantive discussions with the lenders but could not say however whether Cyprus would meet the November 12 deadline. Cyprus sought financial aid from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund in June but the government has still not concluded a bailout deal with lenders despite repeatedly emphasising that it must be done

before the November 12 Eurogroup meeting. After November 12, it will take the parliaments of individual eurozone nations about six weeks to sanction the Cyprus memorandum. Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said he did not know what the German minister meant and did not wish to interpret the statement. “What I can say with certainty is that we have been in consultation with the EU and the troika for some time now and we expect a date to be set for the arrival of the troika to negotiate with the aim of concluding on a memorandum. This is called substantive discussion,” he said. Stefanou could not say if Cyprus would miss the deadline. “This is a matter which will be answered when the troika comes to Cyprus and when we start the negotiations,” the spokesman said. The government appears eager to conclude a deal, faced with the danger of running out of cash by December and being unable to pay the public wage bill. Missing the November 12 Eurogroup meeting could also mean that Cyprus may be “butchered” if international lenders deal with the country in isolation. The government spokesman suggested there were alternative scenarios, like

Lance Armstrong to burn at the stake this weekend A 30-foot effigy of disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong wearing a Jim’ll Fix It badge will be burned at a British town’s annual bonfire celebration this weekend. A steel-framed model of the 41-year-old American, who was recently stripped of his seven Tour de France titles for doping offences, will go up in flames in Edenbridge, Kent. The effigy has Armstrong holding a sign saying “For sale, racing bike, no longer required” and with a Jim’ll Fix It badge round his neck in reference to late TV presenter Jimmy Savile being suspected of widespread child abuse. The figure will be stuffed with oilsoaked newspapers, packed with fireworks and torched in front of thou-

sands of people on Saturday night. Bonfire Society members said it was not easy to choose Armstrong, who had all his results from August 1998 removed on the recommendation of the United States Anti-Doping Agency and banned from cycling for life. Society co-ordinator Charles Laver said Savile and hook-handed cleric Abu Hamza were ruled out, as was Chancellor George Osborne for being “a bit boring”. Laver said: “We had a shortlist which included Jimmy Savile but it was decided it would not be nice to use him as a lot of children attend the bonfire and they might start asking their parents questions. “Then we had George Osborne but he

hasn’t really got a face that everyone knows and he’s just a chap in a suit. We felt he would be a bit boring. “We started to do Abu Hamza but then we decided we weren’t entirely happy to do him, so Lance Armstrong came out of the woodwork. “He’s better because he’s brighter... We’re very pleased with it.” Bookmaker William Hill had Armstrong listed as the favourite to be the effigy at 15/8, followed by Osborne at 4/1, followed by footballers John Terry (6/1), Luis Suarez (10/1) and Ashley Cole (12/1). Spokesman Mark Young said: “Lance Armstrong is certainly the biggest villain in sport, with fans ... feeling cheated by a man thought to be whiter than white.”

THE jobless rate in Cyprus climbed to 12.2 per cent in September, recording one of the highest year-on-year increases in the European Union, it was announced yesterday. According to the EU statistics service, the unemployment rate in Cyprus rose from 8.5 per cent in September 2011 to 12.2 per cent in the same month this year, which is higher than the EU and euro area averages. The jobless rate in August this year was 11.8 per cent compared with 11.9 per cent the previous month. Compared with a year ago, the unem-

ployment rate increased in twenty EU member states and fell in seven. The euro area (EA17) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 11.6 per cent in September 2012, up from 11.5 per cent in August. The EU27 unemployment rate remained stable at 10.6 per cent in September 2012, compared with August. The biggest drops were observed in Lithuania (14.7 per cent to 12.9 per cent), Estonia (11.4 per cent to 10.0 per cent between August 2011 and August 2012), and Latvia (17 per cent to 15.9 per cent between the second quarters of 2011 and 2012). The highest increases were registered in Greece (17.8 per cent to 25.1 per cent be-

THE GOVERNMENT’S proposed changes to immovable property taxation may provide an incentive for property developers to sell rather than sit on land, said a lead consultant yesterday. A bill submitted to parliament aims to reform immovable property taxation and bring in an additional €29 million for the government. The bill proposes lowering the tax free threshold from €120,000 to €40,000 and raising the taxation rate itself on a tier basis which will range from 3.0 per thousand to 12 per thousand. The tax – separate from that set by municipalities – is calculated on 1980 values despite big rises in the value of plots, apartments and houses. So although home owners will now be called on to pay more tax, it is property developers, and those with considerable property to their name who will be most impacted, said Pavlos Loizou, a consultant and member of the Cyprus royal institution of chartered surveyors. According to government figures most property owners own property valued at €40,000 and less in 1980, and will not be impacted. But ten per cent of all immovable property owners, corresponding to a little over 70,000 people will now be taxed at the rate of 3.0 per thousand. So someone with a plot of land valued in 1980 at €70,000 will be asked to pay €90. Someone with property valued at €130,000 will be taxed

€280 because the first €40,000 is tax free, the next €80,000 is taxed at 3.0 per thousand and corresponds to €240 and the remaining €10,000 which is over the €120,000 tier is taxed at 4.0 per thousand and is an additional €40. A property developer with land worth €1.2 million will pay €11,700. This is because taxation jumps at €170,001 to 9.0 per thousand and then again at €300,001 to 10 per thousand. Between €500,001 and €800,000 the rate is 11 per thousand and for any amounts over that it is 12 per thousand. There are about 3,500 people with property valued at over €300,000 and about 1,000 with property valued at €800,000, according to the finance ministry. Loizou said that some may not have liquidity to pay taxes but he hailed the fact that some property developers will have an incentive to sell. “Anyone who buys property will have an incentive to do something with it rather than let it sit,” he said. “Look at Nicosia with its empty plots,” Loizou said. Having property in the heart of a city and not doing anything with it forces people to move further out and spend more time and money commuting, and forces the government to build more roads, install more street lights and the like, he said. The Green party yesterday said it was unfair that the government was proposing taxing immovable property based on 1980 values. “Discussions… should not take place while the issue of updating

Most home owners won’t have to pay but those with more expensive houses (above) will have to shell out the value of immoveable property remains unresolved,” the party said. A new evaluation to reflect changes in the mar-

ketplace would take at least three years and the finance ministry has said that it needed revenue without delay.

Radio service detailing traffic reports comes into effect THE Traffic Announcements service starts today, informing drivers islandwide over the radio on the status of traffic whether there is traffic ahead. The service, a collaboration between the police and state broadcaster CyBC, aims to ease congestion by warning drivers of traffic jams. The announcements will be made on the FM frequencies of the CyBC’s First (Proto), Third (Trito) and Fourth (Tetarto) programmes. In an announcement yesterday, the force said most cars had the RDS service, which if programmed, can start the radio up automatically, or increase the volume, when these traffic an-

nouncements are being made. “However, for this to be possible, (drivers) must activate this service on each car’s transmitter,” it explained. On most transmitters, the service is under the initials TA (traffic announcement), while it can also be called TP, for traffic programme. If someone wishes to listen to music on CD, DVD, USB or IPOD, but still hear the announcements, they can do so, just so long as they programme their radio to one of the aforementioned stations beforehand. “When there is an announcement, the other source of sound will be interrupted and the driver will hear the announcement automatically,” said the announcement.

Home CYPRUS TODAY Record tourism revenue reported for August TOURISM revenue set a new record in August reaching €312.1 million. At 16.9 per cent this was the biggest annual increase in 13 months, data released by the Statistical Service showed. Data based on the Passenger Survey, show revenue from tourism increased to €312.1 million in August compared to €267 million in August 2011. The period between January and August this year saw revenue reach €1.32 billion compared to €1.22 billion in the same period last year, an increase of 8.5 per cent. The August figure was the biggest increase since July 2011 when revenue recorded an increase of 18.8 per cent. The second biggest revenue from tourism was €306 million recorded in August 2007.

Grenade attack at city car wash A HAND grenade explosion – the second in two days – at a Nicosia car wash caused €4,000 worth of damage, police said yesterday. It was the second incident involving a hand grenade in two days. The grenade exploded between 6.30am and 7.30am, police said. In the early hours of Tuesday, unknown individuals hurled a grenade at the entrance of a cinema complex in Nicosia, slightly injuring a security guard and damaging a car. Two individuals on a motorbike were spotted throwing a grenade at 2.50am, authorities said.

State lottery enters the 21st century with website By Stefanos Evripidou THE STATE lottery yesterday announced its first foray into the online world with its own website, 54 years after the lottery came to Cyprus. State lottery director Stavros Michael presented the new website yesterday, noting that members of the public can now access information on the different lottery tickets available, winning tickets, legislation governing the state-sponsored gambling operation, and other relevant information. The state lottery was first introduced in 1958 under British colonial rule, printing out 80,000 lottery tickets for a grand prize of (CY) £5,000 or €8,543. The lottery was suspended for a brief period during

the EOKA freedom struggle, but then reinstated in 1961, after independence. It has been operating ever since, introducing the ‘scratch card’ lottery ticket in 1979. According to Michael, over half the money made goes back to the public. Consumers receive 50.1 per cent of the profits made from lottery ticket sales in prize money, while 37.8 per cent is net profit, 10 per cent is the commission paid to agents, 1.3 per cent accounts for operational costs, and under 1 per cent is spent on personnel. “The majority of those who win the state lottery belong mainly in the low to medium-sized income brackets. “The money won, based on the statements of the winners, is used to pay off debts, pay for their children’s education, build or add to their homes, help

their children etc. In other words, the prize money of the state lottery was well spent,” said Michael. In 2011, sales dropped by around €5m from €54.3m in 2010 to €49.2m the year after. Net profit in 2011 came to €18.2m, compared to €19.7m the year before, recording a 7.8 per cent decrease. Last year’s total prize money paid out came to €24.8m compared to €27.6m in 2010. Between 2000 and 2011, the highest net profit came in 2002 at €27.7m while the biggest prize money given out was recorded in the same year at €35.1m. As part of the government’s drive to tighten belts, operational costs were reduced from €1.6m in 2010 to €1.2m in 2011, a reduction of 18.4 per cent. For more information on the state lottery and winning tickets, visit: www.lottery.gov.cy.

Life for murder of pregnant Julia and 35 years for the manslaughter of Victoria, 3 By George Psyllides A 30-YEAR-OLD Paphos hairdresser was yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his pregnant girlfriend and her toddler on a beach in Yeroskipou last December. Theodoros Theophanous was sentenced to life for the premeditated murder of 24year-old Julia Oborok, who was four months pregnant with his child at the time, and was also given 35 years on a manslaughter charge for killing her three-year-old daughter Victoria. The sentences will run in succession, the three-member criminal court said. Theophanous was also handed 10 years each for two charges relating to possession of a firearm and explosives. These will run concurrently with the life sentence. Oborok was shot while Victoria was nearly suffocated by hand and then drowned using considerable force by the assailant who pushed her face down violently on the stones in shallow water. Referring to Victoria’s death, the presiding judge said it was the first time that Cyprus witnessed such a se-

rious case of manslaughter. The defendant did ask Oborok not to take threeyear-old Victoria with her to the fatal meeting, the judge said, but even after seeing her in the car, he still went ahead with his hideous plans. The way he caused the child pain, agony and ultimately her death make one’s hair stand on end, the judge said. Relatives of the victims welcomed the decision with applause in stark contrast to the hairdresser’s family who broke down in tears. The 30year-old’s mother fainted. Security measures at the court were strict with more than 50 police officers deployed inside and outside the courtroom. The court asserted that the motive for the murders were pathological jealousy and the financial problems faced by Theophanous. The court heard that the defendant had been paying €30,000 in monthly payments to loan sharks and became enraged when he realised that Oborok was lying to him when she said she would lend him €300,000 that she would in turn get from her grandfather.

Murdered Julia Oborok and her daughter Victoria The judges judged as reliable testimony from convict Antonis Kitas, who had led police to the murder weapon having won the hairdresser’s trust in prison. During his trial, Theophanous claimed he adored Oborok and that he considered Victoria his own child. He accused Paphos dep-

uty police chief, Nicos Sophocleous, as well as Paphos CID officers of exercising psychological and physical violence on him. He claimed they repeatedly beat him after his arrest to force him into confessing to the murder and that they threatened to set him up if he failed to do so.

A 67-YEAR-OLD jeweller from Larnaca was yesterday found shot dead in the Paphos district near Petra Tou Romiou. Michalakis Demetriou was found dead in a pool of blood near his car on a dirt road at 4pm. State pathologist Eleni Antoniou said Diogenous was shot at least twice but more information would be available today after the post mortem. Reports said the man was shot in the head and chest from close distance. Police said they were investigating all possibilities although the main focus was his line of work. The man’s car had been found ransacked. “The fact that he dealt with the trade of jewellery is under investigation,” Paphos police spokesman Nicos Tsiappis said. The victim’s son told police that his father had only said he was travelling to Paphos for business. Police had no indication of how Demetriou ended up in the area. Also yesterday, a 65-yearold Polis fisherman reported missing by his family was found dead on his boat, police said, but foul play has been ruled out. Pavlos Ioannou was found unconscious on his boat in the Fontana Amorosa area at around 7pm. He was rushed to Polis hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Ioannou had been suffering with heart problems. Police have ruled out foul play. Ioannou had gone fishing early yesterday morning but had not contacted his family who notified police in the afternoon. The exact cause of death is expected to be determined today during a post mortem.

Move towards fund to manage wealth from hydrocarbons Sylikiotis said the state was partly basing plans on how to handle potential gas revenue on the Norwegian model By Stefanos Evripidou JUST HOURS after cabinet approved the start of negotiations to award licences for gas exploration in four of Cyprus’ offshore blocks, Commerce Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis met with the Legal Service yesterday to discuss how best to manage the potential gas revenue. Speaking to the state broadcaster, Sylikiotis said he gave instructions to the Attorney-general to prepare a bill setting up a hydrocarbons fund to handle the massive wealth expected from the natural gas in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). “We need to prepare this legislation from now, even if the gas is not expected for some years yet, because we earn credibility if we have the proper institutional framework from the start,” he said. The minister said the authorities were partly basing their plans on how to handle potential gas revenue on the “Norwegian model” of handling sovereign wealth produced from its own natural resources. The billions of euros expected in gas revenues will be partly used to build the necessary energy in-

frastructure like a liquefaction terminal and gas pipes. Another part will be used to complement the state budget, including servicing the huge debt knocking on the door in the shape of an EU bailout. And a third part will be “invested for future generations”, a reference to the planned hydrocarbons fund. No mention was made of the percentage of hydrocarbon profits that would be tucked away for a rainy day.

LEADING ROLE “For Cyprus to play a significant role in exploiting hydrocarbons, it has to play a leading role in the infrastructure. For the terminal, we’re talking about an investment of €7-8 billion,” said Sylikiotis, noting that the government would use the hydrocarbon deposits in its EEZ as collateral to secure loans to make the necessary investment in energy infrastructure. The minister pointed out that when Norway first set up a sovereign wealth fund, the money was initially used to set up the necessary infrastructure. Today, only a fraction of proceeds are spent on the state budget.

Cyprus’ own hydrocarbon fund should be an independent body regulated by the Central Bank but which can come under the scrutiny of parliament and the finance minister, said Sylikiotis. After striking oil in huge quantities in 1969, Norway spent the next 20 years extracting oil and spending the relatively low revenue created. In 1990, in an effort to manage rising income flows, the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund was established to put in all oil revenue plus any return from the fund’s investments. Six years later, the first profits from oil revenue were put in the fund. Now, with around €400 billion at its disposal, it’s the world’s largest fund, owning 1.0 per cent of all stocks in the world. The Norwegians have imposed strict ethical guidelines on prudent investment to ensure the fund achieves a high return for future generations while respecting fundamental human rights. Since 2001, all oil revenue is put directly in the fund while approximately 4.0 per cent of its value is transferred to the annual budget. The 4.0 per cent represents the ministry’s estimation of the dividend created by the fund. One of the reasons why the system works so well and Norway is considered a model for other petroleum-producing countries is the level of transparency and strict oversight. Speaking previously to the Cyprus Mail, analysts have warned against considering gas revenues as

additional budget funding, which could result in more civil servants, lower productivity, more money wasted, higher tax evasion and less investment in the private sector. Four licences for gas exploration in offshore blocks were announced by the government on Tuesday night as part of the second licensing round launched in February. The blocks for which the licenses have been awarded are: 2, 3, 9 and 11. They are all contiguous blocks, lying north and north-east of Block 12, where US firm Noble Energy has a concession to drill.

NEGOTIATIONS The four blocks were awarded to a mix of consortiums and single bidders, including Italian ENI, French Total, South Korean KOGAS, and Russian companies NOVATEC and GPB Global Resources. Assuming negotiations with the selected companies are successful, the companies would next sign signature bonuses sometime in early 2013. Sylikiotis said he expected exploratory drilling to start within a year and a half to two years. In the meantime, the ministry will continue its evaluation of the remaining bids for the remaining blocks. Ruling AKEL spokesman Giorgos Loucaides said yesterday the decision to enter into negotiations with those specific companies was based to a large extent on the criteria of national security, bearing in mind Turkish threats and its actions within in Cyprus’ EEZ.

Protest outside Belgian embassy KURDISH people living in Cyprus yesterday held a demonstration outside the Belgian embassy in Nicosia, to protest the way their compatriots were treated by Belgian police during a demo instration in Brussels in support of Kurds being held in Turkish prisons. Many of the prisoners have been on hunger strike for the past 50 days. Holding Kurdish flags and banners bearing the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) symbol, the protestors called for the release of PKK founding member Abdullah Ocalan, who has been in a Turkish prison since 1999. A delegation of the protestors, who also called for Kurdistan’s recognition, handed over a letter to the embassy, calling on Belgium to be more tolerant towards Kurdish protests in Brussels. The protests are in aid of thousands of Kurdish prisoners in Turkish prisons, they said. Leading the delegation, Suleyman Temel yesterday said protests would continue to be held locally, with the next one planned for either outside parliament or the Philoxenia conference centre, where most of the high-level meetings for Cyprus’ presidency of the EU council are taking place.

German minister drops bombshell Russia says loan application being considered but repeats must be done in tandem with EU (continued from front page) the regular Eurogroup on December 17. “But we are always working on being able to conclude as soon as possible because from the moment there is uncertainty it affects the market in general,” Stefanou said. He added that the expectation was for the troika to arrive on the island next week. No specific date has been set however. When Cyprus applied for the bailout at the end of June, the troika visited the island within weeks and submitted a series of proposals to the government on July 25. The government rejected the proposals and spent months coming up with their own, ones they said would “protect the workers” by not axing wage indexation or CoLA and 13th salaries, but which focused on extensive extra taxation. The counter proposals were given to the troika over a week ago. President Demetris Christofias yesterday briefed socialist EDEK leader and House

President Yiannakis Omirou on the developments. Omirou, asked about the German Finance Ministers comment, said Schaeuble may have been misinformed on the situation. If there was more to it, then Cyprus could be in serious trouble, he said. The president is scheduled to see other party leaders today. It has long been suspected that Christofias, despite his assertions to the contrary, does not want to be the one to sign a troika-compiled bailout, and is attempting to stall until the February presidential elections when he will be out of office. Moscow meanwhile reiterated yesterday that any financial assistance to Cyprus must be done through the EU. Cyprus applied to Russia for a €5.0 billion loan on top of €2.5 billion it borrowed in 2011. “Our Finance Ministry is considering this application. We don’t have special funds to support the European economy, but we’re willing

to consider such an application. And of course it must be done in cooperation with the European Union. I don’t think in the current difficult conditions these kinds of problems can be solved on a bilateral basis,” First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov said in an interview with Euronews. Central Bank Governor Panicos Demetriades said yesterday cncerns over euro zone debt sustainability would persist without a return to economic growth. “Europe and the euro area in particular will only be in a position to raise its longterm productive capacity if it first succeeds in restoring the functioning of its banking and financial system, and in overhauling its economic governance framework,” Demetriades, told an audience in Nicosia. “Without a return to positive growth rates, concerns relating to sovereign debt sustainability will remain present and may even be aggravated even if we succeed in reducing public deficits,” he said.

Bailiffs demonstrate after colleague beaten MEMBERS OF the bailiffs union demonstrated outside the Limassol District Court yesterday in protest against the beating of a colleague on the job. A private court bailiff was attacked while handing over court documents in Limassol on Saturday, provoking the union to demand the state take measures to protect court bailiffs. Bailiffs’ representative Koullis Xenis called on the government to implement stricter penalties for those who attack court

bailiffs. According to Xenis, bailiffs have to deal with threats and expletives on a daily basis. “We don’t report these because we don’t want to come into further conflict with people. We just want to do our job and hand over the documents,” he said. Head of the Limassol Bar Association Andreas Michaelides expressed his support to the protestors, noting that those who work to serve justice should be able to do so in safety.

Home Deadline runs out for encroaching cafés

Plenty of warning signs but people continue to ignore them forcing authorities to take other measures

ABOUT a dozen restaurants and cafes alongside the popular Phinikoudes promenade in Larnaca are in breach of fire safety regulations and will not get their licences renewed unless they conform, Larnaca mayor Andreas Louroudjiadis has said. “Fire services visited each spot on Monday to help owners and advise them on what to do to conform to regulations,” Louroudjiadis said. At present, there are recreation centres impinging on the promenade, expanding further than they are legally allowed and so potentially preventing fire services from taking emergency action. Fire services require an eight metre wide corridor “for safety and rescue reasons,” Louroudjiadis said. He added this concerned between 20 and 25 recreational centres – half of which are violating safety regulations – whose owners were given a three month period which expires today to conform. Louroudjiadis said any

place without a licence would be vulnerable to “quite serious” legal procedure but he said it was wrong to say that when the deadline expires, centres would be shut down. “But we are working closely with fire services and we are putting in all possible efforts to establish 100 per cent compliance,” the mayor said. No extensions to the deadline will be given, Louroudjiadis added. “But I think that the recreation centres will get in line,” he said. And fire services will do an unannounced emergency drill to see if their vehicles can get through the promenade, he added. Already underway in Larnaca is a €7.8 million project to renovate the Phinikoudes promenade and Mackenzie beach, expected to be completed in the spring of 2014. The Phinikoudes beach front is due to become more pedestrian friendly and get a cycle lane, disabled access and beach walkways, among others.

THE start of the Poseidon Project, a high capacity undersea cable system that will provide advanced telecommunications facilities to the offshore oil and gas industry in the Eastern Mediterranean region was announced by Radius Oceanic Communications Inc and the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta). The Poseidon system will extend for some 800km from two shore landings in Cyprus, creating a selfhealing ring that borders the Cypriot exclusive economic zone, enveloping the offshore oil and gas lease blocks established for development by the Republic of Cyprus. Radius has teamed up with Cyta, which provides landing facilities and collocation services at its cable stations in Pentaskhinos and Yeroskipos. Through the Poseidon system, Radius will offer managed broadband services on a subscriber basis to offshore exploration,

production and support facilities in the Eastern Mediterranean. “Cyta is extremely pleased to have reached agreement with Radius for this new and important Project for Cyprus. Poseidon will enable Cyta to play an important role in providing state-of-the-art telecommunications facilities to the developing energy sector in the Eastern Mediterranean region,” said Stathis Kittis, Cyta’s chairman. “Our partnership with Radius will allow offshore exploration, production and support facilities to reach the world, through Cyta’s telecommunications hub,” he added. Radius’ president Jim Byous said: “We are honoured to be welcomed by the Cypriot government and by our partner Cyta to undertake a Project that we believe will provide critical infrastructure for the offshore industry for decades to come as the Eastern Mediterranean deep water developments mature.”

Dangerous beach in Undersea cable launches Paphos made safer the Poseidon Project Blocks, ropes and buoys in place as temporary measure By Bejay Browne TEMPORARY measures have been put in place at a dangerous beach in Paphos which attracts swimmers, despite the fact that it is not designated for bathing. President of the Paphos Beaches committee Andreas Chrysanthou told the Cyprus Mail: “Temporary measures have been put in place in the sea facing the beach area close to the Tombs of the Kings.” As this beach is not designated for swimmers, it is not guarded by a lifeguard and is dangerous, especially during high tide with strong underwater currents.

Chrysanthou said; “Despite warning signs in five different languages, bathers – mostly tourists – choose to ignore this.” He added: “Due to the rip current there have been numerous drownings. I believe there have been three deaths there this year alone.” In the past 10 years, more than 13 drownings have been reported in the area. The municipality decided to take temporary measures to aid swimmers in case they get into difficulties. “We have placed ten concrete bases which are very heavy–each weighing two and half tones down onto the sea bed. On to those we have attached a red buoy. They are

TEACHING POSTS The International School of Paphos has vacancies in the following areas: SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS/MATERNITY COVER for PRIMARY SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHERS (Part-Time) Applicants for the posts must have a recognised university degree and be fluent in English. all linked with a special rope. If you are looking at the structure from above it has been created in the shape of an ‘E’,” said Chrysanthou. The new structure stretches for about 100 metres and covers the entire length of the beach at a depth of about eighty to ninety metres. Only a small part of the bay is not covered. Chrysanthou says that this is a rocky area and people do not enter the water here. “The new additions are very clear to see as they are red. Both large and small buoys have been attached,” he said. According to the president of the local beaches committee, the structure is robust and if someone gets caught in a rip tide they should be able to grab onto the rope until the rescue crew arrives. “The municipality thought that we should provide this service as it is morally correct to do so.” he said. Chrysanthou was at the beach to see the work being completed. He said that three holidaying families and their children were there despite the numerous warnings. “We will probably keep the buoys and rope in place un-

til November or December, depending on how long the clement weather continues. But we will remove them during the winter, if the weather is as extreme as last year it could destroy them.” The concrete bases will be kept in place and the ropes and buoys will be reattached in April next year ahead of the beach-going weather. These measures, although welcome are only temporary and a permanent solution to the problem seems a long way off. Chrysanthou said that one of the suggestions put forward was to place a number of wave breakers in the bay which he says would eliminate the problem permanently. “This would require an investment of around 1.5 million euro, and at the last meeting we had with the ministry of communications, they made it clear that no funds were available for this.If money becomes available, it will be one of the first works to be undertaken. It will be very costly but the beach would be safe. As it is now, the temporary measures will give a certain degree of safety but it is not 100 per cent safe nor does it solve the problem,” he said.

Back to school for Cypriot EU officials FROM the 5th to the 9th of this month, 41 Cypriot officials from the EU Institutions (European Commission, European Parliament, European Economic and Social Committee, Court of Auditors) will go back to their schools in the context of the European Commission “EU Back to School” initiative. The aim is to speak about the European Union, their jobs and their experiences to students with the aim of bringing the EU closer to its citizens. The idea will be to “give Europe a face” and to take part in discussions with school students on European issues of interest to them. The “Back to School” initiative, which started in 2007, is being run this year in 11 EU Countries. In total, visits will take place in more than 30 schools in Cyprus, mainly secondary but also primary schools islandwide. The “Back to School” initiative offers officials the chance to revisit their old schools to talk about their current jobs and the challenges and opportunities of living and working across borders.

Britain WORLD TODAY Detention challenge lost THE Supreme Court has ruled against a legal charity that argued a Pakistani national in US custody should be handed over to Britain. In the case of Yunus Rahmatullah, the court upheld an ancient right requiring authorities to produce prisoners. But the court agreed with the UK government that it was unable to enforce his return. He was captured by UK forces in Iraq in 2004 and later handed over to US forces at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan, on suspicion of having al Qaeda links. He remains in US custody, without charge.

New allegations pressure BBC FRESH allegations have emerged yesterday of sexual misconduct by late BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, further increasing pressure on the corporation’s management. Savile was regularly allowed to take “star-struck” young women into private bedrooms at a hospital in north England, Terry Pratt, a former porter there, told the BBC yesterday. Savile, a fund-raiser for Leeds General Infirmary, would regularly arrive at the hospital late at night with two women, go to the nurses’ flats and leave before dawn.

PM loses vote on EU budget after rebellion

Abortion counselling review cancelled

Issue of Europe again splits the Tories

The government has called off a consultation on the way counselling is offered to women who are thinking of having an abortion, Health Minister Anna Soubry said yesterday. Soubry said that as the ministers had no intention of changing the law, there was no point in continuing with the review into independent counselling which began earlier this year. The Department of Health was considering radical reforms to the way advice was offered to women thinking of having abortions. One of the changes on the table was forcing clinics to send women to independent advice centres. Soubry said she realised the decision to call off the consultation would disappoint some MPs but added there was little point in continuing with it when the government had no intention of changing the law. Soubry said: “I am sorry if ... there is some disappointment, but the reality is that we now don’t intend to change the law so it is now an otiose exercise.”

PRIME Minister David Cameron suffered a humiliating defeat in the Commons last night as the issue of Europe again split the Conservative Party. MPs voted by 307 votes to 294, majority 13, in favour of a rebel Tory call for a realterms cut in the European Union’s budget. It is the first significant defeat in the Commons for the government and came despite David Cameron’s insistence that he was taking a tough stance over the budget negotiations. The prime minister said he would veto any real-terms rise in the 2014/20 multi-annual financial framework. “At best we would like it cut, at worst frozen, and I’m quite prepared to use the veto if we don’t get a deal which is good for Britain,” he said. Treasury Minister Greg Clark pleaded with MPs to support the prime minister as he went to Europe to “bat for Britain” over the sevenyear spending plan. But Labour MPs lined up behind the Tory rebels in calling for the government

PM David Cameron leaves number 10 Downing Street as he heads to the House of Commons in London yesterday for Prime Minister’s Questions (AFP) to support nothing less than a real-terms cut in the budget. The result of the vote is not binding on the government but is a major embarrassment for ministers. At Prime Minister’s Questions earlier, Cameron clashed with Labour leader Ed Miliband ahead of the vote. Miliband accused him of “throwing in the towel” over a cut before the negotiations had even begun. “He is weak abroad, he is weak at home. It’s John Major all over again,” the Labour leader said. But Tories lined up to ac-

Life-size Churchill portrait ‘reveals soul’ A LIFE-size portrait of Sir Winston Churchill, which he said revealed his soul during one of his darkest hours, is going on public display after years spent hanging on the wall of the home of his late grandson. The 1916 portrait was painted before Churchill became prime minister, but after he resigned from his post as First Lord of the Admiralty over the failure of the Gallipoli campaign in the First World War. It is the work of Sir William Orpen, one of Britain’s best-known portrait painters and war artists. On seeing the painting, Churchill is said to have told the artist: “It is not the picture of a

man. It is the picture of a man’s soul.” The artist himself spoke of the misery expressed in Churchill’s face. The painting is going on display on Thursday at the National Portrait Gallery in London, in a long-term, 10-year loan. The loan follows an agreement with the estate of Churchill’s grandson, the late Winston Spencer Churchill, who died in 2010 and had the painting for many years in his house. The portrait was painted in the year of the Dardanelles Commission, in which Churchill was preparing to defend himself against charges of incompetent and reckless leadership.

cuse Labour of hypocrisy and opportunism for supporting a cut after presiding over increases in the EU budget while in government. Cameron said the Leader of the Opposition was “playing politics, not serving the

country”. The Tory revolt’s ringleader Mark Reckless said many of his constituents could not understand why, when there were cuts to budgets in the UK’s public services, the EU was getting a larger budget.

Blast near shrine kills at least 6 in Damascus A BOMB killed at least six people yesterday near a Shi’ite shrine in a suburb of the Syrian capital Damascus, state media and opposition activists said. State media said 13 people were also wounded in the explosion in the Sayeda Zainab district. The semi-official Addounia television said the bomb was placed in a garbage bag. Another bomb in the area was defused, the station said. “The explosion occurred just east of the shrine. Lots of people are also wounded,” said one of the activists in the area, who declined to be named.

TARGET “Security personnel have swarmed the area. It is not clear whether the target was the shrine or a security compounding adjacent to it,” he added. Groups opposed to President Bashar al-Assad say seven people died in the blast. The poor neighbourhood, inhabited by a mix of Sunni and Shi’ite Muslims, is marked by the coloured tile and mirror shrine, located near several security compounds, as well as an office for Shi’ite Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Concern among Shi’ites and moderate Sunnis have been rising that Sunni zealots could target the shrine for Zainab, the Prophets’ granddaughter and wife of the Caliph Ali, who is highly revered by Shi’ites. As the 19-month revolt against Assad turns bloodier, sectarian tension has increased between members of the country’s Sunni Majority and Assad’s Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi’ite Islam that has dominated power in the country since the 1960s.

WORLD TODAY Saudi wedding electrocution

The ceiling of the chapel includes the famous creation scene with a bearded God giving life to Adam

Vatican may restrict Sistine Chapel visits By Philip Pullella MICHELANGELO’S Sistine Chapel ceiling frescoes turned 500 yesterday with the Vatican warning it may eventually limit visitors to protect one of the wonders of Western civilisation. On October 31, 1512, only 20 years after the discovery of America, Pope Julius II said an evening vespers service to inaugurate the room where Michelangelo toiled for four years, much of it on his back, to finish his ceiling frescoes. The frescoes immediately became the talk of the town and have since become the talk of the world. The problem is that it sometimes feels they have become the walk of the world. The Sistine Chapel is arguably

Sistine Chapel visited by five million people a year the most visited room in the world. With mass tourism growing, every year some five million people, as many as 20,000 a day in summer, enter the chapel, crane their necks upwards. Most are left awestruck. The ceiling of the chapel, where cardinals meet in secret conclaves to elect the new pope, includes one of the most famous scenes in the history of art - the arm of a gentle bearded God reaching out to give life to Adam in the creation panel. Earlier this month, Italian literary critic Pietro Citati sparked a storm by writing an open letter in a major Italian

newspaper denouncing the behaviour of crowds visiting what is technically a sacred place. Tourists, he said, “resemble drunken herds” as they unwittingly risk damaging the frescoes with their breath, their perspiration, the dust on their shoes and their body heat. Citati became the latest critic to demand that the Vatican severely limit the number of visitors to the Sistine, a mustsee for visitors to the eternal city. Antonio Paolucci, the director of the Vatican Museums, said he did not foresee limiting the number of visitors “in the short and medium term” but

said the museums might not have any choice after that. “Pressure caused by humans such as dust introduced, the humidity of bodies, carbon dioxide produced by perspiration can cause unease for the visitors, and in the long run, possible damage to the paintings,” Paolucci said in an article in the Vatican newspaper to mark the 500th birthday of the ceiling frescoes. “We might limit the access, putting a cap on the number (of visitors). We will do this if tourism grows beyond the limits of reasonable tolerance and if we are not able to respond adequately to the problem,” he said. Under the current system, visitors to the Vatican museums can either book times to enter or wait in long queues outside, but there is no cap on the total daily number.

French police face retrial over teen deaths that sparked riots of 2005 FRANCE’S highest court has ordered a retrial of police officers who were cleared of blame in the deaths of two teenagers seven years ago that triggered nationwide rioting. In a ruling that averts possible tension in the grim suburbs ringing many

French cities, the court ordered a retrial to fully assess accusations that police failed to rescue two teenagers who fled inside an electrical substation and were electrocuted. The deaths on the night of October 27, 2005, sparked clashes between an-

gry youths and riot police in the downtrodden suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois north of Paris. In the following three weeks rioters in cities across the country burned thousands of cars, damaged buildings and opened fire at times in running battles

with police. The unrest, which forced the government of President Jacques Chirac to impose emergency curfew measures, occured mostly in the immigrant-heavy social housing estates on city fringes where poverty, joblessness and social alienation are rife.

CELEBRATORY gunfire at a wedding party in eastern Saudi Arabia on Tuesday night brought down an electric cable, killing 23 people, a local civil defence official said. “At the wedding, the cable fell on a metal door and the 23 people who died were all electrocuted,” Eastern Province official Abdullah Khashman said by phone. A photograph of the aftermath of the accident, published on local newspapers’ websites showed a large courtyard strewn with fallen chairs and a pole in the middle supporting cables carrying lightbulbs. All those killed were from the same tribe, Khashman said. Thirty others were injured in the incident near Abqaiq, a centre of the Saudi energy industry.

Snakes in a parcel CLERKS at a South African post office fled for safety when they emptied a mail bag and a white python came slithering out. The one metre (yard) long non-venomous snake was one of four sent this week in an express parcel that arrived at the Sabie Post Office, about 300 km northeast (185 miles) of Johannesburg, postal officials said yesterday. Once the python hit the floor, sorting room employees were out the door, Sabie Branch Manager Mthobisi Duba said.

Tusks seized TANZANIAN police have seized more than 200 elephant tusks hidden in a coffin and in fertiliser bags, pointing to rising poaching in the east African country, officials said yesterday. “This is the biggest seizure of elephant tusks in Dar es Salaam in recent history. The tusks were really big, which means that they were carefully picked for certain customers,” regional police commander, Suleiman Kova, told Reuters.

US Northeast crawls back to normality

South Africa’s ANC, whites agree to silence ‘Boer’ song

Financial markets reopen after two-day storm closure

SOUTH Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) pledged yesterday to stop its supporters singing the “Shoot the Boer” antiapartheid anthem to avoid upsetting white farmers and stirring racial tension. The agreement between the ANC and white-minority interest group Afriforum ends a two-year legal battle over the song that had ignited a debate about freedom of speech, censorship of history and efforts to mend the racist rifts in South African society. The liberation-era song calls on the oppressed black majority to gun down the boers, or white Afrikaner farmers who were among apartheid’s staunchest supporters. A Johannesburg High Court ruled last year that it was “hate speech” after then-ANC youth leader Julius Malema who has since been expelled from the party for ill-discipline - sang it at several public meetings. An ANC appeal against that ruling was due to start in the Supreme Court today. The two sides instead agreed to sit down and reach a deal

By Edward Krudy and Daniel Bases and Ellen Wulfhorst THE U.S. Northeast began an arduous slog back to normal yesterday after historic storm Sandy crippled transportation, knocked out power for millions and killed at least 64 people with a massive storm surge that caused epic flooding. Financial markets reopened with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange after the first weather-related two-day closure since 1888, and packed buses took commuters to work with the city’s subway system halted after seawater flooded its tunnels. The New York area’s John F. Kennedy and Newark airports reopened with limited service after thousands of flights were cancelled, leaving travellers stuck for days. LaGuardia Airport, a third major airport serving the nation’s busiest airspace, was flooded and remained closed. Limited New York subway service was due to return today, four days after shutting down ahead of the storm, and some commuter rail service was due to come back on line later yesterday. The progress was in contrast to images of devastation along the New Jersey Shore, where flooding swallowed whole neighbourhoods, and in New York City’s Breezy Point, where 111 homes were destroyed by fire. “It looks like the pictures of London or even Dresden after World War Two,” New York Senator Charles Schumer said

Taxi cabs are seen in a lot as flood waters recede yesterday in Hoboken, New Jersey in describing Breezy Point. It will take days or weeks to recover from the massive power and mass transit outages. More than 6 million customers are without electricity in the region. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the storm may be the most expensive in U.S. history. More than half of all the gas stations in New Jersey and Long Island were shut on Wednesday due to power outages and depleted fuel supplies, frustrating attempts to restore normal life, industry officials said. The storm caused more havoc as it moved north to-

ward Canada. Flood warnings were in effect in the Great Lakes region and heavy snow has been falling in the Appalachian mountains. With six days to go before the November 6 elections, President Barack Obama was to visit storm-ravaged areas of the New Jersey shore, where Sandy crashed ashore on Monday as the largest storm to hit the US in generations. He was to be accompanied by Republican Governor Chris Christie, a vocal backer of presidential challenger Mitt Romney. Nevertheless, Christie has praised Democrat Obama and the federal response to the storm.

‘Myanmar must protect Muslims, halt discrimination’ U.N. human rights investigators called on Myanmar yesterday to halt deadly sectarian violence and warned it not to use the conflict as a pretext to remove Rohingya minority Muslims. Some 89 people have been killed in clashes between Buddhist Rakhines and Muslim Rohingyas in western Myanmar in the past 10 days, according to the latest official toll. “This situation must not become an opportunity to permanently remove an unwelcome community,” said a joint statement issued by Tomas Ojea Quintana, UN special rapporteur on Myanmar, and independent experts on minority issues and the internally displaced.

Ai Weiwei accepts defeat DISSIDENT Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is returning money to his supporters after exhausting all legal options in fighting a massive tax bill that his backers saw as punishment for his activism. After the government levied a £1.5-million tax bill on Ai’s design firm last year, tens of thousands of his supporters had sent him money, some in the form of cash folded into airplanes flown over his gate.

They voiced their “deep concern about the assertion of the government and others that the Rohingya are illegal immigrants and stateless persons”. “If the country is to be successful in the process of democratic transition, it must be bold in addressing the human rights challenges that exist,” Ojea Quintana said. “In the case of Rakhine State, this involves addressing the long-standing endemic discrimination against the Rohingya community that exists within sections of local and national government as well as society at large.” The Rohingyas say their homes were burned down by Rakhines armed with slingshots, wooden staves, knives and gasoline.

Malema had sung the song at several public meetings rather than ask the courts to decide on a topic as thorny as “banning” a song known to nearly every adult black South African. “The ANC commits itself not to sing this song,” Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe told a news conference, flanked by Afriforum lawyers and leaders of the Transvaal Agricultural Union, a white farmers’ group. He also made clear the agreement covered other potentially hurtful songs, saying party leaders would “encourage its members to have some restraint and avoid singing lyrics that will hurt feelings”.

BARCLAYS, already rocked by an interest rate rigging scandal, unveiled new U.S. regulatory investigations into the bank’s financial probity yesterday and said its profit was hit by charges for mis-selling insurance. Its shares fell almost 5 per cent, hurt by a weaker performance in investment banking than most of its Wall Street rivals and fears that legal problems would handicap its new chief executive’s efforts to overhaul the company. Following investigations in the UK over its dealings with Qatari investors, Barclays said the Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission were probing whether its relationships with third parties who help it win or retain business are compliant with US laws. The bank is under investigation by Britain’s financial regulator and fraud prosecutor into payments to Qatari investors after it raised billions of pounds from the Gulf state five years ago to save it from taking a taxpayer bailout. Barclays revealed the Financial Services Authority (FSA) investigation in July and confirmed the Serious Fraud Office had launched a probe the following month. Barclays also said yesterday the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission could be close to fining it over an investigation into the manipulation of power prices in the western United States from late 2006 until 2008. New Barclays CEO Antony Jenkins, who took over at the end of July when his predecessor Bob Diamond quit after the bank admitted rigging Libor interest rates, is in the midst of a review to change culture and lift profitability, due to be unveiled in February.

Eurozone ministers mull how to keep Greece afloat EUROZONE finance ministers made progress yesterday on ways to keep Greece afloat, Germany said, as talks between Athens and its foreign lenders near conclusion over reforms it must implement to receive fresh emergency loans. Greece needs to push through spending cuts and tax measures worth 13.5 billion euros ($17.5 billion) as well as a raft of economic reforms to satisfy EU and IMF lenders and secure more bailout money to avoid bankruptcy. Parliament in Athens took a step forward by narrowly passing a required privatisation measure, but the precariousness of the government’s majority fuelled doubts about the passage of other more contentious reforms next week. After a two-hour conference call of ministers from the 17-nation Eurogroup, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told a news conference: “There was considerable progress.” Eurogroup chairman JeanClaude Juncker said in a statement he expected a deal at the finance ministers’ face-to-face meeting on November 12 provided Greek authorities had completed a

Parliament in Athens took a step forward by narrowly passing a required privatisation measure list of prior actions. Schaeuble said ministers expected to receive a crucial report from the so-called “troika” of international lenders on November 11 or 12, near the deadline, but insisted: “Time pressure cannot lead to irresponsible solutions.” The German minister also said there were no concrete negotiations yet with Cyprus, which has said it may struggle to pay public sector salaries in December without aid, and they would probably not start until 2013.

The ministers received more bad news earlier when Athens slashed its forecast for a budget surplus before debt servicing costs next year, dimming one of its few bright spots as rounds of austerity deepen a recession already into its fifth year. The government forecast a 4.5 per cent economic contraction in 2013, which will push public debt to a record 189.1 per cent of gross domestic product. The primary budget surplus is forecast to be just 0.4 per cent, well down on the 1.1 per cent pencilled

in previously. Greece’s lenders are not discussing at present another debt write-off, or “haircut”, Thomas Wieser, the coordinator of eurozone finance ministers said, but EU diplomats say other ways of stretching out official loans are on the table. The options included lengthening the maturities and reducing the interest rate on existing loans, an interest payment holiday, letting Greece buy back its own debt at a discount with borrowed money and allow-

ing it to issue more shortterm T-bills. Even though IMF and EU officials say privately Greece’s debt is unsustainable and will have to be restructured, Schaeuble said that for a large majority of eurozone countries accepting a “haircut” was legally impossible. The troika is readying a debt sustainability analysis and pondering ways to plug a financing gap if Greece were to reach a primary surplus, which excludes interest payments, of 4.5 per cent of GDP in 2016 rather than in 2014.

FRANCE joined a growing list of European Union governments threatening to veto the bloc’s next long-term budget, turning up the heat at the start of divisive bargaining over a 1-trillion-euro ($1.30trillion) spending plan. Yesterday’s warning from Paris echoed similar threats from Denmark and Britain, where Prime Minister David Cameron came under pressure from opposition lawmakers and rebels in his own party to ditch his call for a real terms freeze in EU spending and push for outright cuts. The French ultimatum was sparked by a proposal to trim farm subsidies - jealously guarded by top recipient France - as part of a compromise from the Cypriot EU presidency to cut the 2014-2020

budget by more than 50 billion euros. Even after the proposed cut, agriculture would remain the largest spending area, with deeper cuts pencilled in for infrastructure investment in the bloc’s poorest regions as well as research. “We oppose the proposed reduction,” French European Affairs Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said in a statement. “France would not support a multiannual budget that does not maintain the funds of the common agricultural policy.” The backlash was also a warning not to cut the proposed farm budget further, after Cyprus said much deeper reductions than those outlined so far would be needed to clinch a deal. Despite support from Ireland and Austria,

France’s position puts it on a collision course with Germany, Britain and other net contributors looking to slash the overall spending blueprint by 100-200 billion euros. EU diplomats have warned privately that further cuts are likely to hit agriculture hardest. A FrancoGerman deal to maintain the nominal level of farm spending served as the basis for agreement on the last long-term EU budget for 2007-2013. But German deputy foreign minister Michael Link hinted Paris could be fighting a losing battle this time, saying Berlin would continue to press for deeper overall cuts as part of a “modern budget” that prioritises economic growth and competitiveness.

General Motors sees Europe operations breaking even by mid-decade GENERAL Motors Co reported a surprisingly strong quarterly profit yesterday on higher sales, mainly in the United States, and said it was targeting a return to break-even levels in its European operations by mid-decade. Shares of the automaker rose nearly 9 per cent in afternoon trading even as it said it expected to lose as much as $1.8 billion in Europe this year. “We still have a lot of work to do, especially in Europe,” GM Chief Financial Officer Dan Ammann said. GM’s third-quarter net income attrib-

utable to common shareholders fell to $1.48 billion, or 89 cents a share, from $1.74 billion, or $1.03 a share, a year earlier. On Tuesday, smaller US rival Ford Motor Co reported a far higherthan-expected profit of $1.63 billion for the quarter. Excluding one-time items, GM earned 93 cents a share, well above the analysts’ average estimate of 60 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Earnings in the North American, International and South American units all came in above expectations.

Revenue rose to $37.6 billion from $36.7 billion. Analysts had expected $35.7 billion. GM said it expected a full-year operating loss of $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion in Europe, depending on the level of restructuring that occurs in the fourth quarter. Last year, it lost $747 million in the region. The company, which sells in Europe largely under the Opel brand name, said it was targeting results there to be slightly better in 2013 than in 2012 and to reach break-even by mid-decade.

Opinion

Banking staff have no right to complain THE OVERWHELMING majority of Laiki Bank employees (98 per cent) authorised the leadership of their union ETYK, to take all necessary measures, including the calling of strikes, to reduce the pay cuts imposed by the bank’s board from last month. The pay cuts, combined with the scrapping or reduction of allowances, range from 4.9 to 17 per cent and are expected to save the bank €16 million per year. We would have hoped that overpaid and pampered bank employees would have shown a little more maturity, but they have reacted to the pay-cut in the same selfish way as the state school teachers and civil servants. Instead of being happy that they still have jobs to go to and showing a little gratitude to the taxpayer that will be burdened with debts of billions of euro to save their bankrupt bank, they are protesting because they would have to make a small sacrifice. There is no shame in our culture of entitlement and greed – the unions have made sure of that. It does not matter to the overpaid members of ETYK that private sector workers on a fraction of their pay will have to pay higher taxes on everything so Laiki could carry on operating. It does not matter that unemployment figures are soaring because, among other things, the bankrupt banks are turning the screw on businesses which are forced to sack workers or cut wages in order to stay afloat. Perhaps the state should have allowed Laiki to collapse to teach its employees and ETYK about social responsibility. In a rational world, Laiki employees should have accepted pay cuts of even 30 per cent without protest. They are working for a bankrupt business that needs billions in state aid to survive and they are in no position to set any terms. The argument that they were not to blame is irrelevant. How much is the impoverished private sector worker to blame for Laiki’s bankruptcy in order to be burdened with extra taxes and risk losing his or her job? When they were receiving big pay rises and end of year bonuses, bank employees were not sharing these with the rest of us were they? As for ETYK, it has more responsibility for the mess at Laiki, than it admits. Its leader Loizos Hadjicostis worked very closely with the man responsible for bankrupting Laiki – Greek banker Andreas Vgenopoulos – constantly praising him in public. ETYK’s member on the Laiki board never once complained about Vgenopoulos’ reckless decisions. In short, the union has responsibility for Laiki’s woes, but we doubt Hadjicostis mentioned this to his indignant members at Tuesday’s meeting. We hope common sense eventually prevails, because a strike by Laiki employees over pay cuts would not just be shameful, it would be the ultimate provocation.

Is Sandy a harbinger of the ‘new normal’ Comment J Marshall Shepherd and John Knox

I

N THE waning weeks of the North American hurricane season – a time when a superstorm is not expected to cause widespread damage to the eastern coast of the United States – Hurricane Sandy is a grim reminder of the menace of extreme weather events. With the lowest central pressure of the 2012 hurricane season, Sandy may have caused up to $20 billion in damages, making it one of the costliest superstorms in history. Sandy interacted with a weather system moving toward it from the east, posing difficult challenges for forecasters and nearly unprecedented weather conditions for the region. A similar storm hit New England 20 years ago. But Sandy was worse, delivering hurricane-strength winds, drenching rains, and severe coastal flooding throughout the populous mid-Atlantic and northeast corridor. Some people will, of course, try to link Sandy with climate change. A similar rush to judgment occurred in the wake of massive tornado outbreaks in the US in recent years, even though the scientific literature does not offer strong support for such a connection. So, from the perspective of climate change, it is best to take a measured view of Sandy, lest hasty reaction harm scientific credibility. But that is little cause for comfort. According to the giant insurance company Munich Re, weather and climate disasters contributed to more than one-third of a trillion dollars in damage worldwide in 2011, and this year’s total may rival that amount. There is growing evidence of links between climate change and sea-level rise, heat waves, droughts, and rainfall intensity, and, although scientific research on hurricanes and tornadoes is not as conclusive, that may be changing. Indeed, recent reports by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other scientific lit-

Flooding on New York’s Long Island after Sandy hit the east coast of the US erature suggest that the intensity of tropical cyclones (that is, hurricanes) will increase as a result of warmer waters. And our atmosphere and oceans are, indeed, warming, with substantial residual heat stored in the ocean, to be released at some future time. A few studies have even suggested that tropical cyclones may be “wetter.” It is quite certain that sea levels have risen over the last century, and continue to rise, in response to changing climate. And storm surges now ride on these elevated sea levels, amplifying flooding losses where they strike. It should also be noted that an atmospheric weather pattern known as a “block,” a persistent area of high pressure that may have led to record melting in Greenland, was most likely the reason that Sandy moved inland rather than out to sea. It is too early to tell whether this blocking pattern is a manifestation of weather variability, a short-term climate variation, or the result of climate change. Advances in numerical weather forecasting during the past several decades have extended our ability to “see” into the future. In September 1938, before all of these advances, a hurricane devastated much of New England. No warnings were issued prior to its arrival. Today, thanks

ON THIS DAY NOVEMBER 1

to satellites, weather balloons, supercomputers, and skilled forecasters, we can anticipate hazardous weather up to a week in advance. Similar advances in climate modelling are occurring, thanks to methodological improvements and better data. At a minimum, we must ensure that world-class weather and climate-modelling centres have the necessary funding and manpower to implement the most advanced forecasting techniques. Numerical weather forecasting was invented in the US, but today other countries have developed extremely high modelling capacity. For example, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, in Great Britain, was targeting an East Coast landfall for Sandy days ahead of the best American model. The world will need more cooperation in the coming years, as climate change begins to interact with and exacerbate extreme weather events, in order to gain the lead-time needed to prepare for disasters. We will also need the collaboration among governments, the private sector, and academia that often leads to improvements in forecasting. Scientific meetings are key forums for sharing research, vetting new methodologies, and forging new partnerships. Many

occur on an international basis, and we need to encourage such discourse, even in tough times for government budgets. It is reasonable to ask how well we would be able to predict or assess a storm like Sandy without the knowledge and capacity gained through such international collaboration. We do not know whether superstorms like Sandy are harbingers of a “new normal” in the uneasy and unpredictable relationship between climate change and extreme weather events. That does not mean that there is not or cannot be such a connection, but rather that the scientific research needed to prove (or disprove) it must still be conducted. That is how good science works. Sandy has provided a powerful demonstration of the need to support it. J Marshall Shepherd, Director of the Atmospheric Sciences Program at the University of Georgia, is President-Elect of the American Meteorological Society. John Knox, a professor of geography at the University of Georgia, received the National Weather Association’s highest research award, the T. Theodore Fujita Research Achievement Award. Disney to buy Star Wars maker Lucasfilm for $4b

Moss opens up about modelling misery

New films coming, first in 2015

By Chris Michaud

By Lisa Richwine and Ronald Grover WALT Disney Co agreed to buy filmmaker George Lucas’ Lucasfilm Ltd and its Star Wars franchise for $4.05 billion in cash and stock, a blockbuster deal that includes the surprise promise of a new film in the series in 2015. The deal unites a boutique Northern California film studio that brought special effects into the digital era with a venerable Hollywood powerhouse that has shown a knack for getting the most out of bigname entertainment brands. Disney plans to release at least three more films in the Star Wars sci-fi saga that ranks among the biggest movie franchises of all time, Chief Executive Bob Iger told analysts. The last Star Wars picture was Revenge of the Sith in 2005. Although Lucas has in the past denied plans for any new Star Wars movies, he said in a video interview on Starwars. com that he had already created story treatments outlining three more films as well as many other Star Wars story lines. Lucas, an icon in the industry known for exercising control over the most minute details of the fictional universe he created, will remain a creative consultant on the new films, although in the video interview he cast the sale as part of a long-held personal desire to exit the mainstream film industry. In a statement, Lucas said:

Creator George Lucas (centre) poses with cast members and characters from his sci-fi space saga Star Wars “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers.” He will become the second-largest individual holder of Disney shares, with a 2.2 per cent stake. Disney will pay about half the purchase price in cash and issue about 40 million shares at closing. “This is one of the greatest entertainment properties of all time,” Iger said. The agreement marks the third time in less than seven years that Disney has signed

a massive deal to take over a beloved studio or character portfolio, part of its strategy to acquire brands that can be stretched across TV, movies, theme parks and the Internet. In early 2006, Disney struck a deal to acquire Toy Story creator Pixar, and in the summer of 2009 it bought the comic book powerhouse Marvel. Pixar was founded by Lucas but sold for scrap to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who turned it into a much-celebrated hit-maker. Lucas had

more success with Industrial Light and Magic, the pioneering digital technology company behind the special effects of many major Hollywood movies. Industrial Light and Magic and Lucasfilms’ Skywalker Sound unit do much of their work for other studios and it was not clear how they might be melded with Disney operations. The news that the Star Wars tale will be revived thrilled some fans, although others said they had little appetite

for new installments after the first six movies. Lucas, in the video interview, said he felt Disney was the right home for his franchise. “I really wanted to put the company somewhere in a larger entity which could protect it,” he said. The next Star Wars movie installment will be Episode 7 in the series, followed by Episodes 8 and 9, Iger said. Disney’s long-term plan is to release a new movie in the series every two to three years thereafter, he added.

Lady Gaga likes to ‘submit’ to a man

The eccentric pop superstar has always combined her music with lavish outfits and unique clothes - including the infamous meat dress she wore to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards

THE ‘Judas’ singer - who is currently dating Chicago Fire actor Taylor Kinney - believes she is a new kind of feminist who is empowered in her career but enjoys to be dominated sexually. She said: “As a new age feminist, I would say I quite like the transference of strength I feel by submitting to a man - being under him. I actually wrote a song about it on my album, it’s called ‘GUY’ and it stands for Go Under You. “So wearing make-up, smelling delicious and having suckable, kissable, edible things between your limbs is something I find strengthening because I know that when I pick the right guy, I can let him have it.” The eccentric pop superstar has always combined her music with lavish outfits and unique clothes - including the infamous meat dress she wore to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. But although she believes she can make political and social statements through fashion, Gaga admits she enjoys nothing more than being naked in a bath and smoking marijuana. The 26-year-old musician told Stylist magazine: “I just take a warm bath, smoke a doob, lay back and relax, you know? “When I’m in the bath, naked, in a sea of bubbles going, ‘Aahh’, that is most me - when I’m sighing out the whole day into a warm bath.”

IF you hate having your picture taken, you’re in good company - supermodel Kate Moss does as well. “I’m terrible at a snapshot. Terrible. I blink all the time. I’ve got facial Tourette’s,” she told Vanity Fair in the December issue, out yesterday. Moss, who has graced countless magazine covers and was emblematic of the waif look popular in the 1990s, added: “Unless I’m working and in that zone, I’m not very good at pictures.” Moss, 38, opened up about her years spent before the camera, including nowlegendary shoots that left her anxious, demoralised, and hungry. Among her regrets is a 1992 Calvin Klein session that helped launch Moss’ career. She recalled the shoot, at age 17 or 18, with Mark Wahlberg (then going by his rapper name, Marky Mark) and photographer Herb Ritts. “I had a nervous breakdown,” she said. “It (the job) didn’t feel like me at all. I felt really bad about straddling this buff guy. I didn’t like it. I couldn’t get out of bed for two weeks. I thought I was going to die.”

JUST ANXIETY “It was just anxiety,” she added. “Nobody takes care of you mentally. There’s a massive pressure to do what you have to do (and) I was really little ... I didn’t like it. But it was work, and I had to do it.” When she was even younger, she posed nude for The Face - another regret. “I see a 16-year-old now, and to ask her to take her clothes off would feel really weird. But they were like, ‘If you don’t do it, then we’re not going to book you again.’ So I’d lock myself in the toilet and cry and then come out and do it.” Moss, who became associated with the ‘heroin chic’ look after her early shoots, said “I had never even taken heroin - it was nothing to do with me at all.” “I was thin,” she conceded. “But that’s because I was doing shows, working really hard ... You’d get home from work and there was no food. You’d get to work in the morning, there was no food ... You don’t get fed.” Moss has kind words for her time with Johnny Depp in the mid-1990s, when she said she felt taken care of. After their break-up in 1998, “I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust. Nightmare. Years and years of crying.” Now, she says, her years of partying and high living have ebbed. She married guitarist Jamie Hince in 2011 after a four-year romance.

PUPILS, parents and staff of the International School of Paphos gathered recently at the Palia Ilektriki Cultural Centre to honour the school’s top students for their achievements in the Summer 2012 public examinations. ISOP was honoured by the presence of Paphos Deputy Mayor, Mr Makis Roussis. In his speech, Deputy Head Mr Stephan Spies-Gordes pointed out that results from IGCSE examinations in May/June were the best in the school’s history, with 98 per cent of all the pupils who were recommended to take these exams obtaining grades A* to C. Out of these, 51 per cent received an A* or A grade. At AS-Level, where an A* grade does not exist, 26 per cent of the school’s candidates obtained an A. At ALevel, a 42 per cent received an A* or A grade. The Head of the Interna-

tional School of Paphos, Dr. Litsa Olympiou, commented: “The performance of our students shows that in our 25th year of existence, our commitment to excellence is as strong as ever. We will never stop striving for even better results in the future”. The International School of Paphos also announced scholarships for the current academic year for the two students with the best overall grades. THE oil company STAROIL was the main sponsor of the "European Heritage Days", organised as part of the Tamassos Festival 2012. The events took place on October 14 in Kapedes and, like every year, the turnout was impressive. STAROIL participated by running their own booth during the events, allowing staff to distribute leaflets about the company’s products and services. Festival-goers had the opportunity to tour preserved homes in the community, taste typical local dishes prepared by the inhabitants of Kapedes and view traditional dances and the recreation of a Cypriot village wedding. The festival was held under the auspices of the Minister of Interior, Ms. Eleni Mavrou.

Honorary Netherlands consul Lanitis decorated Cypriot made Knight of the Order of OrangeNassau THE Honorary Consul of The Netherlands in Cyprus, Mr Platon E. Lanitis, was decorated by Her Excellency the Ambassador of the Kingdom of The Netherlands, Ms Brechje Schwachöfer, on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands. Mr Lanitis received the title of Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau. This distinction was given to him in appreciation for his services as an Honorary Consul, since 1985, to the Dutch community in Cyprus and to the development of Cyprus-Netherlands relations in various fields. As the Dutch Ambassador, Ms Brechje Schwachöfer, mentioned in her speech that Mr Lanitis, in his capacity as Honorary Consul, has become a pillar of support in Cyprus for her country and its Dutch citizens. She also added that the

Platon Lanitis was decorated for the support he has offered over the years to the Dutch community of Cyprus

link between the Lanitis family and The Netherlands goes back even further. The late father of Mr Lanitis was for many years a decorated honorary consul before him. Thus,

Dutch citizens in Cyprus can rest assured of the excellent services the Honorary Consulate of the Netherlands offers. In his reply to the Ambassador’s speech, Mr Lanitis said

he felt moved and very proud to have received the same distinction that both his father and great uncle were honoured with also, during their service as Honorary Consuls.

He added he will continue to offer his services, his support and his commitment to Dutch citizens in Cyprus, as well as to promote Cyprus-Netherlands ties in every field possible.

WorldVentures organises successful blood drives WORLDVENTURES, through an initiative by its Independent Representatives, recently organised three blood drive events with great success. The three events took place in late September in Limassol, Nicosia and Athens. The turnout of the events was so great that a total of 121 bottles of blood were gathered in Nicosia and Limassol alone, with WorldVentures representatives themselves being the majority of the blood donors. Through this simple gesture, the Independent Representatives of WorldVentures thus offered

their own contribution towards voluntary blood donation and supporting their fellow human beings. The events also demonstrated one of the basic pillars of WorldVentures' philosophy, which is to give back to people and communities in every way possible. This is why all of WorldVentures' charitable and social responsibility events fall under the concept of "Make a living ... Giving", an idea that is derived directly from the company's slogan, which is none other than "Make a living ... Living".

UXURY yachts line the glitzy seafront marina of Beirut’s Zaytouneh Bay where owners would sip champagne at sunset before stepping out for dinner - spoilt for choice between going Italian at Signor Sassi or French at Cro Magnon. Across the street, the Whisky Mist night club at the Intercontinental Phoenicia Hotel would normally be swinging with Beiruti night clubbers. Gulf Arabs would head for the oriental Awtar night club at the Monroe Hotel for a belly dancing show. The real estate market, meanwhile, defies not just the laws of economics but geopolitical gravity. “How people can ask for $100,000 in rent when the country is on the edge of the abyss I find extraordinary,” said Michael Karam, a wine writer. Lebanon would seem to have it all: a cosmopolitan society, beach resorts, mountains, friendly weather, good food and wine, and buzzing bars.

The party capital of the Arab world, Beirut is a freewheeling city where Gulf Arabs, expatriates and Lebanese émigrés fly in to enjoy its luxury hotels. But under the veneer of modernity lie sectarian demons coiled to strike. The car-bomb assassination ten days ago of intelligence chief Wissam al-Hassan - an attack almost universally blamed on Syria and its local allies - brought the merry-goround to a juddering halt. Gunmen and protesters filled the streets, reflecting the antagonisms fuelling the conflict in next-door Syria and reviving memories of the sectarian hatreds that sunk Lebanon into its 1975-90 civil war, a conflict whose wounds have far from healed. It is not just the sectarian poison - reflecting the regional struggle between Sunni and Shi’ite Muslims and, in Lebanon, the Christians split into alliances with both sides - but the shocking social contrasts that lie beneath the surface. Not far from the glamour of

the Beirut seafront lie shanty towns where destitute people fight for daily survival. Two apartments in the gleaming skyscrapers overlooking Zaytouneh Bay sold only a few months ago for $18 million and $14 million. Apartments for rent were non-negotiable a month ago at a price of $100,000. Real es-

This place is on a respirator. We live in a bubble within the bubble,” said Maria, 47, an interior designer who left Lebanon aged nine and returned after 17 years abroad. Even before last Friday’s blast, the spillover from Syria had started to have a knockon effect in Lebanon. Security was deteriorating

as the rule of law crumbled. Bank robberies and kidnappings for ransom picked up and sectarian rumblings between Sunni and Shi’ite Muslims heightened as Lebanon’s main Muslim factions lined up with the opposing

sides of the Syrian conflict. Tourists who come for the Roman ruins stayed away this year, leaving frightened Lebanese to contemplate another round of sectarian strife. The Christian-Muslim bigotry that triggered Lebanon’s own war is now buried within the overarching Sunni-Shi’ite struggle convulsing the region. The battle lines in Syria are drawn between the heterodox Shi’ite Alawite minority underpinning Bashar al-Assad and the rebellious Sunni majority, with minorities such as Christians and Druze caught in the crossfire. Like other Lebanese, Karam has had enough. He will leave the country in which he married, had children and lived through three wars and a popular revolution. “What prompted me to say this summer that it is time to go is the fact that Syria is in crisis. I am not for one second one of those people who say the Assad regime has to stay, No, but I think while Syria is in crisis Lebanon will be in a

more dangerous situation,” he said. Karam moved to Lebanon from London in 1992, two years after the war ended and the rebuilding of Beirut by former premier Rafik alHariri, a billionaire construction tycoon, started. The first tremor under this resurrected Beirut shook the

des rich and ns are not far mia Nakhoul city in 2005, when Hariri was killed by a massive bomb. The attack was blamed on Syria and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah. “Now my kids are 15 and 14. They want to go out and I don’t want them going out because I don’t want to worry every time they go out,” said Karam.

Maria, the interior designer, has already sent her two sons to school abroad. A Sunni Muslim with Shi’ite kids, she said sectarianism was embedded in Lebanese life and she did not want her children to subscribe to this culture. “For me it is a personal choice but for them they have no place in this society. They don’t subscribe to the grammar of this place,” said Maria. Beirutis are in a state of shock at the renewed violence, which is reviving memories of the civil war which claimed more than 150,000 lives. Like many others Karam believes that unless the Lebanese rebuild a state not based on religion, tackle the security vacuum and revive the comatose economy, the country will lurch from periods of growth and prosperity to periods of instability. Syria is the epicentre at the moment. Sectarian hostility is on the rise across the region. It began in Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein, a Sunni Muslim, and the takeover of power by majority Shi’ites. This shift in the balance of power reinforced the influence of Shi’ite Iran and revived historic tensions in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Lebanon and Syria. That ugly side was on display after the car bomb that killed Hassan, a Sunni Mus-

lim opposed to the Syrian leadership. In Sunni neighbourhoods, gunmen set up roadblocks of

burning tyres, stopping passers-by and asking whether they were Sunni or Shi’ite a chilling throwback to the civil war. A Reuters cameraman was asked about his religion. Despite confirming he was Sunni he was prevented from filming because he was told he had a “Shi’ite beard”.

Sectarian anger boiled over, with protesters chanting slogans insulting Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah. “The blood of Sunnis is boiling,” they said. Yet despite all its troubles, there is a resilience to Beirutis, whose city could scarcely have survived without it.

“Beirut has tremendous energy, it is a city that picks itself up in few hours. It is like a very ugly woman with lots of charm and lots of character, extremely imperfect,” said Maria. “As imperfect as it is with all these people trying to live together, for better or for worse, they attempt to,” she said.

Television PICK OF THE DAY

,

There’s Something Wrong With Aunt Diane (LTV3, 22.00) “There’s something wrong with Aunt Diane,” said a worried 8-year-old girl, talking to her father on her mobile from the back seat of Aunt Diane’s car. A few minutes later that little girl was dead, along with her two sisters (aged 5 and 7), Aunt Diane’s 2-year-old daughter, Diane herself, and three strangers in an SUV that she hit head-on. All this happened in July 2009 when Diane Schuler, a 36-year-old wife and mother, left her family’s annual camp-out in the Catskill mountains on a Sunday morning for the 140mile trip home - then suddenly began zigging and zagging, drove erratically for a while then pointed the family mini-van the wrong way up a New York highway, causing havoc and eventually tragedy. Even more shocking was the result of the autopsy performed on Diane Schuler - because this woman, who’d seemed entirely stable and responsible, was found to have more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in her blood (a bottle of vodka was found in the wreckage), and traces of marijuana were also found. This HBO documentary was controversial, with many calling it exploitative. It does seem very tasteless to use the little girl’s final words for the title - but in fact the film isn’t so much about the accident, more about its aftermath

and specifically the ways in which Diane’s family try to process her death. Simply put, her husband Daniel, who agrees to talk to the filmmakers (Diane’s brother, the father of the three little girls, declined to be interviewed and has cut off contact with the family), seems to be in deep denial about the kind of woman his wife was, looking for a way - any way - to justify her actions and explain what happened. One theory is that Diane suffered some stroke or other malady while driving, causing her to lose control of the car. Another is that she had some health problem (maybe a bad toothache) and unwisely decided to self-medicate. The film examines both these theories - but also makes it seem quite possible (or probable) that there is no hidden evidence: that Diane Schuler was simply a closet alcoholic, and her family had no idea what kind of person they were harbouring in their midst. In short, this is both the worst and best kind of documentary: a lurid, sensational film - but also a film about hidden depths, and how strange and unknowable daily life is. It’ll depress you, make you angry, and make you want to hug your loved one as you sit together on the sofa. Can’t be bad. Made in 2011.

Margin Call (Novacinema1, 18.30) Are you broke, unemployed and feeling the full effects of this awful recession? If so, you’ll appreciate this tale of evil yuppies and Wall Street depravity. Jeremy Irons is the top dog in a big fi nancial fi rm; “There are three ways to make a living in this business. Be fi rst, be smarter, or cheat!” he intones in his wonderfully authoritative British accent - and the third of those options presents itself when a junior analyst (Zachary Quinto) discovers something terrifying. The fi rm is holding more mortgage-backed shares than its entire market value, meaning it’s bound to go bankrupt unless it can offload the bad shares. Yes ... but that would be wrong. A fi ne cast (Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Demi Moore, Simon Baker) debate the ethics in some gloriously juicy dialogue, though in fact the fi lm could’ve stood to be a bit less didactic, and a bit more outrageous. Made in 2011.

Retreat (Novacinema1, 22.00) Remember Dead Calm? Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill? Bereaved couple on a boat, trying to get over the death of a child, confronted by possibly crazy man who claims to be a survivor of a great tragedy? Same sort of thing, only with a remote Scottish island instead of a boat and of course a global pandemic, which is what Jamie Bell claims has broken out in the world outside while not-so-happy couple Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton have been stuck on their island retreat. This is a British thriller, using its small cast and isolated setting to good effect - though an island isn’t quite as claustrophobic as a boat, and the fi lm went straight to DVD in most countries. Still worth a look. Made in 2011.

Wake (Plus TV, 22.00) Another straight-to-DVD job, but this quirky romcom sounds rather promising, starring the wonderfully named Bijou Philips (yup, that’s her real name). “Have you ever had ... an unusual hobby?” asks La Bijou brightly - and her hobby is indeed quite unusual, because when she’s down in the dumps she likes to attend the funerals of total strangers. Fair enough, you might say - but things get complicated at one such occasion when Bijou reaches down to admire the corpse’s engagement ring and it just slips off into her hand, meaning she must track down the dead woman’s fi ancé postfuneral and try to explain what happened; they fall in love, but then things get even more complicated. “Have you ever dated somebody and it just - wasn’t quite right?” Bijou asks her best friend thoughtfully “Is there any other way?” comes the reply. Made in 2009.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21

Conversation is positive, and one discussion could seal a deal you have been working on for some time. There are possibilities for flirting and romance, but despite options to become more intimate, you may decide you prefer to keep things light and easy. It’s also possible that you’ll feel happier doing your own thing. Enjoy time to yourself.

There seems to be a lucky atmosphere around, which is affecting you in particular. Plan a trip or a party, or dare to ask for a pay rise or a new contract. When you are easy going about getting what you want, you have far more chance of being successful. Benefits come through friends and through being seen in the right places. Accept those invites.

You seem to be gearing up to attempt a challenge that is both exciting and fun. A focus on your sign reveals that you seem to be having the time of your life. Prospects are good now for furthering your heart’s desires and ties with a loved one. If you have been in a rut, the planets today provide a means to get out of it and explore fresh ideas.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

VIRGO August 23 - September 23

CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20

Today holds personal rewards for you, especially early on, when you may find the bargain you have been looking for. However, a decision to snap up something that catches your fancy may encourage you to spend a lot more than you intended. A more divisive influence later could make relationships more challenging - try not to rock the boat.

A new start in the business world may be crowned with success. The other good news is that finances can improve, and you might even have a tendency to splash out. Actually, it’s about time that you did. Don’t feel guilty. When an issue seems to be going in the opposite direction to which you want it to go, allow a good friend to help you out.

Side step gossip that could arouse antagonism with a friend or colleague. A conversation topic that seems innocent, may end up opening the door to regrettable comments or revelations. Today also brings an opportunity to get more realistic about money and earnings. Although you are practical, you could have a tendency to be irresponsible today.

GEMINI May 22 - June 21

LIBRA September 24 - October 23

AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19

Romance is fun with a hint of surprise. With Uranus in the picture, you can expect the unexpected. Friends may have an idea for an outing that turns into a wonderful evening. Light-hearted conversation that is fun and engaging may leave you wanting more. Work wise you seem to be very busy - try not to allow the pressure to get too much.

A sociable influence is likely to bring contacts and ideas. Write letters, advertise your goods and services and be in touch. A short trip may turn out to be very rewarding, especially if you are exploring somewhere for the first time. Money may come in, but you may need to handle it with care in order to keep it. A friend can prove funny.

You may have reason to feel exuberant, mainly because your social life has potentially recently perked up. The accomplishments of a child may also bring a great deal of satisfaction your way. A message from someone you don’t get to see very often may inspire you to get in touch and renew your relationship. Later, a change of schedule could work out well. Enjoy yourself.

CANCER June 22 - July 22

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22

PISCES February 20 - March 20

Loving feelings and artistic tendencies rule the day. Shop for beautiful home items and think about decorating a room or several rooms to make your property lighter and brighter. The presence of Venus suggests things are perfect for entertaining friends, family or work colleagues. Health wise, you seem to be on a roll, but try not to over indulge. Focus on exercise.

The accent is on relationships, though you might not be able to act as independently as you prefer. There may be comfort in allowing partners or loved ones to provide security of some kind. You may feel like you want to do as much as possible on your own, but in reality it’s not practical or possible. Despite your feelings, you seem to be in a generous mood.

Love can stir a rainbow of sparks today. A sudden attraction may be dazzling. Later, don’t read too much into what people say. Once past an edgy incident, it will be clear sailing for romance and fun. Overall, try to avoid spreading yourself too thin or giving away too much of your time and resources. It’s time to recharge your batteries and pamper yourself.

Sport ‘Once-in-a-lifetime’ Kauto Star bows out PAUL Nicholls has confirmed the incredible Kauto Star has run his final race. The winner of two Cheltenham Gold Cups and five King George VI Chases, Kauto Star was pulled up on his final start in last season’s Gold Cup. Connections have taken time to make a final decision over whether the 12-year-old should race on, but the champion trainer and owner Clive Smith have decided to call time on his career. Speaking in his Betfair column, Nicholls said: “The end of an era has finally arrived. Clive was here

this morning (Wednesday) and we have taken the decision to retire Kauto Star.” Nicholls revealed in September connections would consider giving the legendary chaser one last run in the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day, but after seeing him on the gallops in recent weeks, he feels now is the right time to draw stumps. “We have had nine superb years with the horse but, after seeing him in his work these past few weeks, we were of the opinion that the time had arrived to retire him,” Nicholls said. “Of course, as owner,

the final decision rested with Clive, but he agreed that the horse had done enough. “Don’t get me wrong, Kauto looks and feels as vibrant as ever, as those who saw him at our owners’ Open Day last month would testify to. He was mad fresh that day and continues to be as alert as ever and very, very well in himself. “But I suspect Kauto will be like that when he is 20 years old. And, deep down, we know he has done enough - and in some ways I think we have to protect him from himself. And maybe

ourselves, too. If he did go to Kempton and win or run well, would you really want to run him - or be able to resist the temptation - in the Gold Cup? I am not so sure.” “Kauto is signing off in full health and after a season in which he proved so many people wrong by winning a fifth King George and a fourth Betfair Chase, to add to his two Cheltenham Gold Cups and Tingle Creeks,” said Nicholls. “Who wouldn’t want to train a horse of this quality any more? He is a once-in-a-lifetime horse, after all.”

The incredible horse has run his final race

Heat ring in NBA season with win

ORGANISERS of this year’s much-anticipated Cyprus Rally, which takes place this weekend, has announced a late change in the itinerary. As previously announced, the event gets underway at 7pm tomorrow, with Special Stage 1 - a 3.2km all-tarmac Super Special Stage through the streets of Paphos, with the start located outside Paphos Town Hall. As before, the event will continue to be held over the next two days, however the Saturday and Sunday itineraries are now swapped. The decision has been made due to the popular Cyprus hunting season, with certain special stages latterly falling within established hunting zones. The revised itinerary will effectively remove the risks that might have been posed to competitors, spectators and hunters. An impressive roster of international, regional and national drivers will take to Friday’s start ramp, including defending IRC champion Andreas Mikkelsen of Norway in his Skoda Fabia S2000, and 2010 Cyprus Rally winner Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar, who will field an M-Sport Ford Fiesta RRC.

Miami celebrate title with special ceremony

IN BRIEF

Cyprus Rally confirms itinerary change

By Simon Evans

Last season’s Most Valuable Player LeBron James marked his first ring ceremony with 26 points against the Celtics

WITH shiny new diamondencrusted rings on their fingers, the Miami Heat began their NBA title defence in confident fashion with a 120107 win over Eastern Conference rivals the Boston Celtics on Tuesday. Miami were presented with championship rings and rose the title banner to the arena rafters before the game to mark their second NBA title and the first since the creation of the ‘Big Three’ with the arrival of Lebron James and Chris Bosh to team up with Dwyane Wade. Ray Allen made his Miami debut against his old team and put aside any concerns about his fitness with 19 points as the home crowd taunted the Celtics with chants of ‘We got Ray!’ Last season’s Most Valuable Player James marked his first ring ceremony with 26 points but had to sit out most of the fourth quarter with leg cramps. James, who also suffered cramps in last season’s finals, left in the third quarter but came back before cramping

up again. “At that point there was no point in forcing it,” said Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra. “He already went back and started to cramp again. Game one is not the time to pull what we did in the finals,” he added. James’ points tally continued his run of scoring at least 20 points in each of his last 28 regular season games against Boston. Wade, looking fresh after the knee surgery in the off-season which cost him a place in the gold medal US Olympic team, top scored with 29 points, while Bosh delivered down the stretch and finished with 19 points. Miami were 19 points up early in the fourth but, in the absence of James, Boston launched a comeback and reduced the deficit to four with just over two minutes remaining on the clock. The Heat rallied, however, to gain a win against the team they defeated in last year’s Eastern Conference championship game. Paul Pierce had 23 points and Rajon Rondo 20 for the Celtics who are again expected to be the main challenger

to the Heat in the East. Spoelstra said he was pleased with the way his team, after enjoying the celebration, had managed to quickly put it aside and focus on the game. “It was good to cap this night off with a win, it was emotional time for whole organisation, pre-game to raise that banner, because it brought back all the emotions and memories of how much it took to actually accomplish that collectively,” he said. “But our guys did a good job of compartmentalising and turning the switch ... and concentrating on the most important thing which was playing this game to win and giving our fans something to cheer about.” Celtics head coach Doc Rivers was disappointed with the way his time allowed Miami to take the initiative. “I thought they were the aggressor the whole game, they got on the floor where they wanted to get, they took us out of stuff they wanted to, you can see they played together longer than us and their continuity was good,” he said.

Pietersen falls after brisk 23 on England return

Boxing All Black Williams has surgery, fight in doubt

Beckham’s Olympic speedboat goes on sale

KEVIN Pietersen made a quick-fire 23 on his return to England colours before falling to old nemesis Yuvraj Singh on the second day of the first warmup match in India yesterday. Pietersen, who was dropped for the third and final Test against South Africa at Lord’s in August following a text message row, hit three boundaries and a six in his 24-ball knock before offering a return catch to Yuvraj. Alastair Cook, who replaced Andrew Strauss as England’s Test captain, stroked an unbeaten 112 to guide the visitors to 286 for four at the close in reply to India A’s first innings 369.

BOXING All Black Sonny Bill Williams had surgery on a pectoral injury yesterday, which looks likely to delay his return to Japanese rugby and force the postponement of his next fight. His Panasonic Wild Knights club told Reuters they were discussing a rehabilitation schedule for the 27-year-old but were not sure when he would return to Japan from Australia. Also New Zealand’s heavyweight boxing champion, Williams flew to Sydney on Tuesday to prepare for his November 24 bout with 44-year-old Francois Botha in Brisbane, which now seems in serious doubt.

SPORTS fans may have to pay £250,000 to buy the speedboat that David Beckham powered down the River Thames to the Olympic opening ceremony. The former England captain and LA Galaxy star took the controls of the 2008 ‘Torchbearer’ Bladerunner BR RIB 35 to bring the Olympic flame to the ceremony. An estimated 900 million people watched Beckham pilot the speedboat on the flame’s final journey to the Olympic Park in Stratford, east London. The boat, now billed by Bonhams as the “ultimate souvenir”, goes under the hammer at Mercedes-Benz World Brooklands in Surrey on December 3.

Sport Tribunal to probe replay use in ‘Hand of God’ goal By Brian Homewood

Once-mighty AC Milan have been a shadow of their former selves this season but fought back from two goals down for a point against Palermo

Milan happy after comeback AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri was satisfied his side recovered from 2-0 against Palermo to secure a point on Sicily on Tuesday night, but believes there is more to come from his players. Palermo led through a Fabrizio Miccoli penalty and a goal from Franco Brienza early in the second half, but Milan ensured a share of the spoils through Riccardo Montolivo and Stephan El Shaarawy’s seventh goal of the season. The Rossoneri moved up to ninth in the table, with their hosts climbing out of the bottom three, but Al-

Allegri: the players did well to believe. I can’t burn them out, I’m not a madman legri still sees room for improvement. He told reporters: “The players did well to believe in themselves, to come back into the game and they played a great second half.” Allegri also criticised the fixture list as his side played three days after a 1-0 win over Genoa. “In the first half we played badly but we’re playing eve-

ry three days,” he said. Allegri also spoke of the need to look after his players to avoid burnout, particularly El Shaarawy and Urby Emanuelson. “I made changes to the team because I wanted to give a rest to some players as playing every three days is not easy. “I can’t burn out El Shaarawy who is playing

every three days and this evening played with a cold. “I can’t burn out Emanuelson. I’m not a madman, I gave a rest to those players who have been ever present.” Allegri hopes to hit on the winning formula so his team can regain some of the ground they have lost on the leaders. “The objective is get a run

of results together to get up the league table. We could have three or four points more than we do for what the team have done so far. “I’m not saying we didn’t deserve to lose points, but we could certainly have more than we have now.” Defender Ignazio Abate felt he was harshly treated for the penalty when the ball his his arm from Miccoli’s cross. Abate told the Milan website: “The penalty was dubious. It hit my hand but there was no movement of my arm towards the ball. I think it was a bit generous.”

Police charge 12 after Serbia-England Under-21 fracas By Zoran Milosavljevic

England’s Danny Rose (right), who was sent off, said he was racially abused and pelted with missiles by the fans

SERBIAN police have charged 12 people with violent conduct after a mass brawl following a Euro Under-21 qualifier against England two weeks ago. “Charges have been pressed against five Serbia players and an assistant coach, two England players and an assistant coach as well as three fans,” the Interior Ministry said this week. “According to the instructions of the public prosecutor’s office in Krusevac, they have been charged with violent conduct at a public sports event on October 16 at the Mladost stadium. “The three fans have been charged with the use of fireworks.” None of those charged were identified. A brawl involving players

and staff from both sides broke out after the second leg match which England won 1-0 to seal a 2-0 aggregate victory and reach next year’s finals in Israel. England left back Danny Rose, who was sent off along with Serbia’s Nikola Ninkovic, said he was racially abused and pelted with missiles by the home fans before, during and after the game.

DENIED THE CHARGES The Serbian Football Association denied the racism charges and UEFA’s disciplinary committee is to review the video evidence before announcing its verdict on November 22. UEFA president Michel Platini said last week Serbia could face tough sanctions if found guilty of racism. “We will get the report from the delegates and the report

from the officials - we have television footage and the disciplinary committee will deal with it,” Platini told reporters at a Euro 2016 meeting. The English Football Association reacted to the announcement of the Serbian police charges by pledging to support its players and staff. “We are in contact with the British Government for advice as well as speaking with our colleagues at UEFA,” said the FA in a statement. “The FA reiterates its position of full support for all players and staff caught up in the appalling scenes in Serbia. “We want to reassure those concerned that we are committed to doing everything necessary to protect them whilst also offering support to individuals and their families.”

Brazilian football’s disciplinary tribunal is to investigate a complaint that match officials used information based on television replays in their decision to disallow a goal at the weekend. The STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice) said it had accepted a protest from Palmeiras following their match at Internacional and provisionally declared the result of the match void pending an investigation. It also deducted Internacional’s three points from their 2-1 win, also provisionally, and said a decision would be expected next week. Palmeiras were furious after Hernan Barcos had a ‘Hand of God’ goal overruled by the fourth official. The Argentine striker appeared to have equalised in the 62nd minute when he netted at a corner with a punch reminiscent of compatriot Diego Maradona’s infamous goal against England at the 1986 World Cup. The referee and his assistant missed the handball and ruled a goal had been scored as Barcos was mobbed by celebrating team mates. However, Internacional players circled the referee in protest and the fourth official called to the assistant referee, apparently to tell him Barcos had scored with his hand. The STJD said Palmeiras complained that match delegate Gelson Baluta had been told by a television reporter that replays cleared showed Barcos had used his hand. The Palmeiras team doctor said that he heard Baluta talking first to television employees and then match officials. Match officials are banned from using video evidence in making decisions. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Argentina beat Mexico 3-1 with the help of an opening goal from Carlos Tevez that replays showed was clearly offside. The stadium screen exposed the mistake as it replayed the goal and the Mexican players surrounded the referee, urging him to review the decision.

Coe reveals Blatter thought English game ‘run by idiots’

O’Neill denies confidence problems

‘It’s got the smell of death about it’

By Kate Bamber FIFA president Sepp Blatter reveals Russia as the host of the 2018 World Cup. England received an embarrassing two votes - one of which was from their own delegate

By Mike Collett FIFA president Sepp Blatter thought English football “was run by idiots” which was a reason England failed to win the right to stage the 2018 World Cup finals, according to a new book by Sebastian Coe. Twice Olympic 1,500 metres champion Coe became involved in England’s bid after leading London’s successful bid in 2005 to hosts this year’s Olympic Games. He was later appointed by Blatter to chair FIFA’s Ethics Committee but stepped down from that role to work unpaid to help bring the World Cup back to England for the first time since 1966. But, he says, almost from the start of his involvement he felt the bid was doomed to fail. “It’s got the smell of death about it,” he told fellow executive Keith Mills, the chief executive of the London Olympic bid, after the two attended their first England 2018 meeting together. “I had been truly shocked by the vituperative nature of the meeting I had just witnessed. There was thinly disguised contempt around the table.” After the bid failed, with only two FIFA votes, one of which was from England’s own delegate Geoff Thompson, Coe said much of the blame was laid at the door of the British media who had heavily criticised FIFA in the run-up to the vote in Zurich

on December 2 2010. “I am less willing to lay the blame at the media’s door,” Coe says. “Ultimately the fault, I believe lies with the awful dysfunctionality of the English game, its personalities and politics. “First you have the FA, which is the regulatory body. Then you have the Premier League... then you have the big clubs and the moguls including (Roman) Abramovich at Chelsea and the Glazers at Manchester United, not forgetting the big beast managers such as Alex Ferguson

and Arsene Wenger. “This has always been a very uncomfortable set of relationships, at best strained. The fact they didn’t trust each other and didn’t much like each other was a problem. “The FA distrusted the Premiership, the Premiership distrusted the FA and Brian Mawhinney, as chairman of theFootball League, wasn’t comfortable with any of them.” Against this background, says Coe, his “instincts” were that Blatter always wanted to take the World Cup to Rus-

sia, which is what transpired, However, he said, people who believed Blatter wanted that outcome because he hated England were wrong. “He doesn’t. He’s Swiss and like a lot of Swiss, he’s rather fond of England. He likes the political stability, he likes the pomp and tradition. “What he always has a problem with is the English game. And from his perspective, its not hard to understand. “As president of the international federation he sees the unwillingness of English clubs to release players for in-

ternational duty. He sees the purchasing power of the English game - big name clubs buying up players from all over the world. “And he sees a national federation, that, at the time of the bid, had no chairman and no chief executive. “Blatter once said to me ‘Your game is run by idiots, its not run by bright people’...I was obviously disappointed, very disappointed.” Coe’s book Running My Life - The Autobiography is being serialised in The Times before it is published next month.

Adkins takes blame for Saints exit By Wayne Gardiner

Championship side Leeds took their second successive top-flight scalp with a 3-0 win over Southampton

NIGEL Adkins shouldered the blame for his Southampton side’s Capital One Cup exit at Leeds, accepting the majority of the 11 different faces he fielded did not take their chance to shine. Goals from Michael Tonge and El-Hadji Diouf and a Luciano Becchio penalty helped the Championship side to their second successive top-flight scalp, with their 3-0 victory earning them a first quarter-final berth since 1996. Neil Warnock’s men had the run of the park against a below-par Saints side, with Adkins’ much-changed side unable to find sanctuary from their dismal Premier League form. But having lost to Tottenham over the weekend, Adkins was of the opinion that he could not have put his first-team players through another tough workout and accepted the responsibility for Tuesday night’s collapse. “We didn’t perform anywhere near what’s expected of a Southampton Football Club team,” he said. “Forty-eight hours ago we had a high-inten-

sity game and I made the relevant changes. I take full responsibility. We wanted to play on Wednesday, but the powers that be wanted it to be Tuesday. “But we gave the players who have not been in the team to the chance to show what they could do, and they did not take it.” For his part, Leeds manager Neil Warnock had nothing to be concerned about. The veteran tactician is trying to make daughter Amy’s wish to see him manage at Wembley come true and thoughts are starting to turn towards a possible trip to the capital. “Amy came tonight, she just had a word in my ear about it,” Warnock said. “I thought that right from the off we were at it. I wanted us to enjoy it because if all the games are like our draw with Charlton last week, I would be better off fishing. “We played some good football. In the second half, when it was 1-0, I said to my assistant Ronnie Jepson that extra-time would kill us, because you thought Southampton would always have that chance. “But we didn’t sit back and we should have scored more goals.”

SUNDERLAND manager Martin O’Neill denied his side are lacking in confidence after they were knocked out of the Capital One Cup by local rivals Middlesbrough at the Stadium of Light. Scott McDonald’s firsthalf strike earned Boro a quarter-final place in a hard-fought Wear-Tees derby as Sunderland again drew a blank up front in the 1-0 defeat. McDonald, who was handed a start after he scored both of the goals in last weekend’s 2-1 npower Championship win over Bolton from the bench, scrambled the ball home from six yards at the near post in the 39th minute. It was enough for Middlesbrough to progress as Sunderland lacked the cutting edge that has seen them draw six of their eight Barclays Premier League games and only score six league goals so far this season. “It was an opportunity for us to try and get into the quarter finals of the competition and we didn’t play well enough and we didn’t deserve to go through,” O’Neill told reporters. “It was really disappointing. We started off brightly in the game but Middlesbrough forced their way into the game and in truth we didn’t create enough. “Eventually we didn’t have enough confidence but not at the start of the game and not on the back of a strong draw on Saturday (against Stoke). “I thought it was quite the opposite but if you’re not playing well enough that can drain you and you can start playing the wrong options. Collectively we were not good enough to go through and that’s very disappointing indeed.” Boro boss Tony Mowbray believes O’Neill will fix Sunderland’s goal scoring problems after watching them draw a blank against his side on their home turf. “I have total respect for Martin and his team,” Mowbray said. “I’m sure he’s scratching his head as to why they’ve not scored as many goals as he’d want. Following Tuesday’s result and the strong run of form which means Boro are currently third in the npower Championship, Mowbray is feeling confident whoever his side draws in the last eight. “That’s our fourth Capital One Cup game away from home so whoever we get and when the night comes we’ll apply ourselves as we did tonight,” the Boro boss said. “I am delighted for the team and the supporters. It was a decent performance. “Cup competition is about getting through to the next round and we managed to do that. I think there will be a lot of happy people on Teeside.”

Reading left reeling with unwanted place in history Arsenal win one of the most memorable games in the 52-year history of the League Cup By Mike Collett

R

EADING now occupy the unwanted place in the record books of losing the highest scoring games in the League Cup and Premier League when they went down 7-5 to Arsenal in an extraordinary Cup clash late on Tuesday night. Reading were on the wrong end of a 7-4 scoreline to Portsmouth in the Premier League in 2007 and they also suffered the FA Cup’s second heaviest defeat, losing 18-0 to Preston North End in a first round tie in 1894. Nothing of the sort looked possible though as they flew into a 4-0 lead over Arsenal after 37 minutes at the Majedksi Stadium in the fourth round encounter to leave several away fans shaking their heads in bewilderment as they made for the exit gate. They missed one of their club’s greatest comebacks and one of the most memorable games in the 52-year history of the League Cup. The 12 goals scored surpassed the record for one match, set in September 2005 when Aston Villa beat Wycombe Wanderers 8-3. The biggest winning margins were both by 10-0 when West Ham United beat Bury by that score in 1983 and Liverpool beat Fulham by

Crazy: Theo Walcott (right) scored a hat-trick as Arsenal fought back from a 4-0 deficit to win 7-5 in the highest-scoring game in the competition’s history the same margin in 1986. Liverpool’s win over Fulham was in the first leg of a second round tie and Fulham famously printed a picture of the world’s thengreatest player Diego Maradona on the front cover

of their programme for the return leg. The message inside read: “Not even he can help us now, but let’s enjoy the night.” Reading have now played Arsenal ten times and lost

all ten matches, with manager Brian McDermott, a former Arsenal player, saying afterwards the defeat was the “worst” of his career. “It was kamikaze football in the second half and ex-

tra time. Even at 5-5 it’s extraordinary. It’s the worst defeat of my career,” said McDermott. The Reading boss was angry Theo Walcott’s injurytime equaliser came almost two minutes after the four

allocated minutes. “Obviously it doesn’t help that the referee added two minutes on to the four minutes of injury time to make it six. You can’t tell the time as wrong as that, but he did,” said McDermott. “At full-time nothing needed to be said to the players. Sometimes the less said the better. We know what happened. This game will be remembered for a long time and that makes me feel a whole lot worse.” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he knew what it felt like to lose a four-goal lead after drawing 4-4 with Newcastle in the league in February 2011. “I know how it feels to lose a 4-0 lead - it happened to me at Newcastle. I always hoped we could come back. It’s strange to explain. At 4-0 you think you have won the game, but at 4-2 the panic starts to set in,” said the Frenchman. “At 4-0 I didn’t feel great, I started to think about halftime. Inspiration was not difficult. I just felt sorry for the fans, they stuck with us. A big part stayed and supported us and I give them credit. I give the ones who left less credit. “Then the miracle happened. There were so many turning points. Our first goal before half-time was important. It’s my first 7-5. It was a tennis score.”

Deflated Djokovic knocked out of Paris Masters By Julien Pretot

The Serb, whose father is reportedly unwell, ran out of steam

WORLD number two Novak Djokovic suddenly ran out of gas as he was knocked out 0-6 7-6 6-4 by American Sam Querrey in the second round of the Paris Masters yesterday. Serbia’s Djokovic, who will replace Swiss Roger Federer as the world number one next Monday, breezed through the opening set before losing control. Querrey was trailing 0-2 in the second set but dramatically improved after bagging his first game of the match. Djokovic, who had got into the Halloween spirit by turning up on centre court wearing a Darth Vader mask, ended up being slayed by Querrey’s powerful serve and forehand.

“Great tennis at the start but I knew that the main problem today will be the continuity of my energy,” Djokovic, who had a stomach bug last weekend, told a news conference. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be after the second set. And during the second set I already felt that physically I’m down and I struggled every game.” Serbian press reported this week that Djokovic had considered pulling out of the Bercy tournament as his father Srdjan is in hospital with respiratory problems but the second seed refused to blame his personal problems for the loss. “I’d rather not talk about it. Sorry about that, but it’s just private and I’d like to keep it that way,” he said.

“Some things happened and a lot of things are on my mind..., so right now I just need a couple of days’ rest before (next week’s season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in) London. A red-faced Querrey was at first just looking to salvage his pride. He ended up pulling off a great escape. “It’s my biggest, this win feels great,” Querrey told a courtside interviewer. “I served great. When I was down 6-0 2-0 I just wanted to get a game and when I won that game I got a bit more confidence.” The American took an early break in the decider and saved five break points in the ninth game, wrapping up an unlikely win on his second match point with a service winner. He will next face Canadian 14th seed Milos Raonic or

France’s Jeremy Chardy. Earlier France’s Richard Gasquet lost his chance to qualify for the World Tour Finals when he slumped to a 7-6 4-6 6-1 defeat against the towering Kevin Anderson of South Africa. Serbian Janko Tipsarevic was still on course for one of the two remaining spots in the eight-man season finale after the eighth seed beat Dutchman Igor Sijsling 6-4 7-6. And late last night, British third seed Andy Murray beat French wildcard PaulHenri Mathieu 7-5 6-3.
