YPRUS opened a fresh round of talks with its EU partners and the IMF – collectively known as the troika – yesterday with the aim of agreeing on the terms of a bailout for the cash-strapped island. The two sides engaged in 12 hours of talks yesterday, which will resume this morning but both remained tightlipped on what, if anything had transpired, saying it was in the best interests of the negotiations. Yesterday’s talks were open ended, but it was unlikely that a deal was imminent, a senior Cypriot official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. Also Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly is due to leave for Brussels on Monday. “A great deal of work has been done, there has been progress in the negotiations with the troika so far,” said government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou, who is also a member of the island’s negotiating team, referring to previous consultations with the group. “Obviously though a lot of work remains to be done.” The spokesman said there

was “will and determination” to come to an agreement as soon as possible but warned against public discussions “because they may create more problems.” “Everyone’s main position should be that we have a difficult task ahead and the aim is to achieve a deal that serves Cyprus’ best interests,” Stefanou told reporters. The size of the potential bailout – speculated to be anything between €11 and €16 billion – the bulk of it for the Greece-exposed banks – will be huge in proportion to the €17.9 billion economy, the third smallest in the euro zone. Debate on how Cyprus will manage to pay it back will feature prominently in discussions. Cyprus says it wants the eurozone’s ESM bailout fund to recapitalise the banks directly, but heavyweights in the bloc disagree with the ESM undertaking legacy debt. “Economically the biggest challenge of these talks will be how to get a deal which will make the debt sustainable,” economist Fiona Mullen told Reuters.
People attend a demonstration in front of a court house in the Northern Spanish Basque town of Baracaldo yesterday, hours after the death of Amaya Egana, 53, who commited suicide jumping from the balcony of her home before she was going to be evicted. The economic crisis, blamed on the collapse of a speculation-driven real estate boom, has plunged Spain into recession, throwing many families into poverty
Condemned killer argues that he’s too obese to receive lethal injection A CONDEMNED killer fighting his execution because of his extreme weight does not have accessible veins in his arms or hands and cannot receive a lethal injection in his legs because he is so obese, a doctor told a court. Death row inmate Ronald Post, 53, who weighs nearly
28 and a half stone, wants a judge to stop his January execution on the grounds his weight could cause him to suffer severe pain during the procedure. The state opposes the request. Ohio lawyers had criticised an earlier filing by Post based on an analysis by a doctor who did not
examine him. A court filing in Columbus sought to counter that opposition by presenting the affidavit of a doctor who examined Post extensively and interviewed him about his medical history. It was “highly unlikely” that an IV could be placed in Post’s legs and
“extremely unlikely” that veins could be found in his hands, Ohio State medical centre anaesthesiologist Sergio Bergese said in the affidavit dated October 31. Post also had scars on his left and right forearms from a suicide attempt that made his veins inaccessible
for an IV, Dr Bergese said. He said Post reported he had provided some blood samples in the past only after great difficulty. Post is due to die on January 16 for the 1983 shooting death of Helen Vantz in Elyria. Her son Bill has called Post’s arguments “laughable”.

(continued from front page) The IMF, which announced its participation in the mission on Wednesday, hinted as much: It said it wanted a ‘financing solution consistent with debt sustainability’. Stefanou said the banking sector will be discussed today with the participation of the Central Bank Governor. The amount needed for the recapitalisation of the island’s banks is something the two sides disagree on. Lenders want privatisations, wage cuts in a public sector which is one of the most highly paid in Europe, a culling of wage indexation and the creation of a “bad bank” to park soured assets. There are also disagreements on privatisations and a troika demand to scrap wage indexation or CoLA. Cyprus says it will not privatise “profitable” state enterprises while President Demetris Christofias said he is prepared to take to the streets to defend wage indexation.

‘Not safeguarding national interests’ State advisor on gas raises concerns about bids By George Psyllides A MEMBER of the government’s advisory group of experts on natural gas issues said yesterday it would be unthinkable for Cyprus to sign offshore exploration contracts whose conditions were not as good as the best bids made in the island’s second licensing round. Professor Panos Papanastasiou’s comments came on the heels of a report claiming the criteria used for awarding one of the exploration licences were political, and linked with the government’s hidden agenda not to sign a bailout deal. The government announced last month it would issue four licences for gas exploration in specific offshore blocks pending negotiations with the short-listed companies and consortia. Blocks 2 and 3, were
awarded to a consortium consisting of ENI from Italy and KOGAS from South Korea; the licence for Block 9 went to a consortium consisting of Total E&P Activities Petrolieres (operator), NOVATEC Overseas Exploration & Production GMbH and GPB Global Resources BV from Russia; and the Block 11 licence went to Total E&P Activities Petrolieres. In a written statement, Papanastasiou said the people who worked on the evaluation of the applications knew very well the bids that were submitted. “I emphasise that it is considered unthinkable to sign contracts with worse financial conditions than the best bids that were submitted,” Papanastasiou said, the sentence typed in bold. “It is expected that the negotiating team’s objective would be the further improvement of the bids.”

The professor’s statement coincided with a report earlier this week claiming the Cabinet’s decision to award the Block 9 licence to GPB Global Resources BV – a Gazprombank subsidiary – was clearly political, designed to sugarcoat a request made by Cyprus for a €1 billion loan from Russia. The consortium’s bid was ranked fourth among eight, by both a French consultancy firm and the commerce ministry’s own committee’s separate evaluations. The other three plots were awarded to the companies which received the highest evaluations. It appears that the bid was not the most financially beneficial for Cyprus but the Cabinet justified its decision by citing criteria such as national security. Main opposition DISY demanded explanations. The report, published by opposition daily Alithia, suggested that the loan would not come from the Russian government, but from Russian banks involved in the Block 9 project. Citing senior government sources, Alithia said the Demetris Christofias administration hopes the €1 billion
will be enough to ride out the storm until February’s presidential elections without having to sign a bailout. Papanastasiou stressed that the contracts would be compared with the best bids and “depending on the result, the negotiating team will either be lauded, or explanations will be demanded for not safeguarding the national interests.” Government sources said on Tuesday that in assessing the bids for Block 9 the evaluation committee employed just two of the five criteria. These criteria were: the technical and financial ability of the applicants, and “the ways in which the applicant intends to carry out the activities that are specified in the licence.” But the commerce minister employed a different set of criteria – all five – in arriving at his own recommendation. The other three criteria are: national security; the financial consideration that the applicant is offering in order to obtain the licence; and “any lack of efficiency and responsibility that the applicant has shown under any previous licence or authorisation of any form in any country of the world.”

Home CYPRUS TODAY MTN hails its quick response PRIVATE mobile telecommunications company MTN yesterday hailed its quick response to the massive power cut that hit Nicosia on Thursday, leaving phone subscribers unaffected. A fault at the Athalassa substation left most of the capital without electricity for almost an hour and a half during noontime on Thursday. According to an MTN statement, the power cut had no effect on its subscribers’ ability to communicate. “The network’s modern infrastructure was able to withstand the crisis, allowing subscribers to communicate without interruption,” said the company. Telecom giant CyTA suffered loss of signal during the blackout, especially in areas where there was no electricity. According to a CyTA source, due to some of the semi-government organisation’s technology being dated, the company suffered some loss to GSM and 3G signals during the blackout.
Applications for building permits drop THERE has been a 6.7 per cent decrease in applications for building permits so far this year, according to the Statistical Services. The report covers the period from January to August, 2012, and compares it to the same period last year. During this period, a total of 4,761 building permits were issued, showing a decrease of 6.7 per cent compared to the same period in 2011. The value of these building permits decreased by 23.4 per cent, the report says while the total area of land covered by the permits also fell by 31.1 per cent. The number of residential units included in the permits saw a massive decrease to the tune of 35.7 per cent.
Two cars torched in Limassol TWO CARS belonging to the same person were torched in the early hours of yesterday morning in Moutayiaka in the Limassol district. According to police, the cars were parked in the private parking lot of a 36-year-old man. One of the cars is the personal property of the 36year-old, while the second is registered to a company also belonging to the man. Both cars were completely destroyed in the fire, started at 3am, that also damaged part of the man’s house. Firemen were called to the scene where they extinguished the fire. Following investigations at the scene, police confirmed this was yet another case of arson in Cyprus.
Six defibrillators donated to save lives THE HEART Patients Association yesterday announced the purchase and donation of six Automated External Defibrillators (AED). The AEDs will be donated to different organisations and services with the aim of preventing and reducing the deaths of people suffering from heart disease. The association will fund the training of 12 people, six from the police traffic department and six from the land registry office in Nicosia. The training will involve how to resuscitate people and also how to use the AEDs. The training will take place at the association’s offices in Nicosia by members of the Cyprus Resuscitation Council on November 14 between 1pm and 7pm.
Milk prices to rise Two hikes in 2013, the first on New Year’s Day By Peter Stevenson CONSUMERS WILL have to pay more for milk and other dairy products from 2013. The Pancyprian Cattle Farmers Association (POA) has decided to impose a 5.8 cents per litre rise in the price of wholesale milk next year, citing the rising costs of animal feed. Following three months of negotiations, cattle farmers, dairy producers and pasteurisers concluded they could no longer absorb the extra costs in production and animal feed. The planned rise in wholesale prices will be introduced in two instalments during 2013 with the first rise of 4.0 cents a litre expected on New Year’s Day. The second increase of 1.8 cents per litre will come into force three months later on April 1. “Prices should have gone up in August of this year,” said POA director Nicos Papakyriakou. He was keen to point out that POA had already absorbed the price rise in animal feed and the increase in production costs incurred in August. “Our
Cattle farmers and dairy producers say they can no longer absorb extra costs members have suffered a total loss of €6m since July 2012,” Papakyriakou added. The planned increase in the cost of wholesale milk prices which will have a knock-on effect on retail prices of milk and cheese products was not welcomed by consumer groups who argued that Cyprus already boasts the most expensive milk in Europe. “POA should absorb any extra cost right now,” head of the Cyprus Consumers Association George Stylianou said. “They should wait longer before increasing the prices
of dairy products as we are now in a period of economic crisis,” he added. Papakyriacou denied the claim that Cyprus had the most expensive milk in the EU, arguing instead that the island had the highest costs of production in Europe. The Cyprus Grain Commission controls all the animal feed on the island but their president Kyriakos Kailas said the commission cannot change the price of imported feed. “Once the local reserves of animal feed are exhausted then we are forced to sell feed from abroad; prices
we don’t control,” Kailas said. According to a source in the Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC), POA is the focus of three ongoing investigations by the CPC; following two complaints by milk and dairy producers, and a third investigation initiated by the commission itself. Papakyriakou brushed off the investigations, saying: “The Cyprus Grain Commission operates as a monopoly, the dairy industry had three companies and has had to reduce them to two, yet we are the focal point of investigations.”
Former IKOS employee a no-show at Limassol court WANTED in connection with allegedly stealing data from the company that previously employed him as research manager, Vincent Pfister again failed to show up at Limassol district court yesterday where he was due to be referred to the criminal court. A new hearing has been set for January 29, next year. The legal services issued a European arrest warrant against Pfister in September because he had not shown up to previous court hearings in May and in June. He is not in
Cyprus, but authorities in the UK and France, where Pfister has known addresses, have not yet executed an arrest warrant. The British authorities will not execute the European arrest warrant without fingerprint information to identify Pfister. Pfister faces charges in relation to stealing data from IKOS Asset Management, where he worked until 2010. IKOS was co-founded by husband-and-wife team Elena Ambrosiadou and Martin Coward who later became estranged and lodged dozens of
law suits against each other. Ambrosiadou was BP’s youngest-ever senior executive at 27 and went on to create IKOS in 1992 with her Goldman Sachs mathematician husband Martin Coward. She made the Greek Rich List last year and the Sunday Times Rich List, while IKOS itself is a top performing hedge fund. The company moved to Cyprus in 2006 to be closer to Middle East investors, and because of the island’s “more benign tax environment”. Pfister faces charges of al-
legedly stealing information from the company three years after the move to Cyprus. The police filed charges against him in April this year. Charges include alleged theft of proprietary software including source code, handwritten notes, balance sheets, and database information. The prosecution claims that Pfister illegally accessed IKOS data via a company computer between April 2009 and May 2010 to allegedly steal private data and save it on a hard drive and a memory card.

Home CERN calling all Einstein wannabes in Cyprus to fill job quotas By Alexandra Anastassiades THE CHANCE to work on one of the biggest physics experiments this century attracted only a handful of students at the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) this week. The largest research centre of its kind, CERN, is calling on Cypriot students and graduates to apply for positions at the Geneva-based centre, with at least two reserved places guaranteed for Cypriot applicants. Cypriot nationals are now eligible to apply for positions at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, following
Cyprus will officially be off Russian blacklist from January 1 CYPRUS WILL finally be removed from the Russian blacklist of non-cooperative ‘tax havens’ from January 1, 2013. According to Moscow-based online site www.tax-news. com, the Russian government has published an order in the country’s official gazette providing for the removal of Cyprus from Russia’s blacklist, starting next year, when a double taxation agreement signed between the two countries comes into force. The publication of the official order comes after years of negotiations between the authorities of the two countries, starting in 2008 when Cyprus was added to a blacklist of 54 countries for reportedly failing to share tax information with Russia. Many of Cyprus’ competitors in attracting Russian investment, such as Ireland, Luxembourg and Switzerland, lobbied hard to get off the list which dictated the rules on tax exemption for repatriated dividends from Russian subsidiaries in foreign countries. However, negotiations between Cyprus and Russia proved harder, with the latter leaning on Cyprus to provide a greater level of tax information exchange. A protocol was finally signed between the two countries in 2010 which will come into effect in the new year.
the signing of an agreement on October 5, 2012, making Cyprus an associate member of the research centre. CERN representative Seamus Hegarty was at TEPAK on Thursday to brief potential candidates on the job and training opportunities at the research centre. “It is a relaxed working environment, where our common goal ensures that barriers are broken down. Students may often find themselves chatting to Nobel Prize winners during lunch,” said Hegarty. He added that women were especially encouraged to apply as CERN wishes to increase its female participation. The poor ratio of men to women at CERN was also reflected in the
audience where only three of the 20-25 who showed up were women. “This is a very difficult period for Cyprus, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for young people to be exposed to an excellent scientific environment,” said TEPAK Professor Marios Ioannides. “There are currently no Cypriots at CERN, so it is important for us to be represented,” he added. Despite the disappointing turnout, Hegarty strongly encouraged the TEPAK students who did show up to apply to the variety of programmes that CERN offers, ranging from technical and administrative to doctoral programmes. He also warned that if they didn’t succeed the
first time round, to keep on trying. CERN operates the world’s largest particle physics laboratory, employing and hosting thousands of scientists and engineers from all over the world involved in high-energy physics research. It is also home of the now famous particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, which is effectively a 27km-long, double-ended gun that shoots beams of protons at each other. Those who may be put off by the stiff competition to work in one of the world’s leading research centres should be encouraged by the fact that the CERN Summer Student Programme is the only CERN programme that has nationality quotas.
Bidder for forces radio claims tender flawed Garrison Radio says only BFBS could have won bid By Nathan Morley A CONSORTIUM is claiming significant flaws in the tendering process to broadcast to the British forces in Cyprus and other military locations after the Ministry of Defence awarded the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) a new tenyear contract. The “Future Forces Broadcast Services” contract, worth up to €31 million per year, is due to start in April 2013, providing “a service that delivers unclassified information, entertainment and education to the British Armed Forces community worldwide”. Garrison Radio, which runs radio military stations on British bases in the UK, responded to a MoD tender in

The person would possess acquired skills in hydraulic, auto-motive electrical systems and diesel/petrol engine maintenance and repair.
The UK MoD has awarded BFBS a new ten-year contract late 2011 along with four interested companies, including current operator BFBS. However by the deadline in April 2012, only BFBS under the umbrella of the Services Sound and Vision Corporation, had found itself able to submit a bid. Mark Page, founder and chairman of Garrison Radio told the Cyprus Mail: “This latest tender process was flawed in that it was structured in a way that favoured one bidder against all others.” The dispute centres on the question of the cost of providing expensive technical equipment, including hundreds of transmitters, dozens of studios and 32,000 local settop boxes in forces’ locations around the world.
Page says those facilities, worth tens of millions of pounds, were freely available to the existing operator BFBS, but would have to be supplied and installed afresh by any new contractor. “It was on a site visit to Cyprus to inspect broadcast facilities that we unearthed the can of worms in regard to the infrastructure,” Page said. “Sadly the MoD failed to give us the right answers initially, they seemed to have a complete lack of knowledge in what ultimately belonged to the taxpayer and what it seemed BFBS had ‘acquired’ in Cyprus.” “Our consortium engineers returned from Cyprus to confirm that all was not well and not right with the tender

process. The MoD are saying we could have bid, but in this day and age, when you get multiple bidders for a small commercial radio licence in UK, but only one bidder for a broadcast contract worth quarter of a billion pounds? That tells you the story.” Garrison Radio insists that taxpayers had already bought the equipment in the form of payments to BFBS over decades and that the essential facilities at forces bases should have been made available to any winning bidder. “We wanted the MoD to rerun this tender on a fair and equitable basis. The effect of the MoD’s tendering criteria has been to hand the contract on a plate to the larger existing contractor by running a
process that appears prejudicial against any other bid from the very start,” he added. The upshot resulted in a lengthy challenge at the High Court between Garrison radio and the MoD, which failed in July when the MoD insisted that BFBS had to be awarded the new contract immediately if there was to be no break in the service next March. Garrison Radio said that the judge accepted that nobody other than the incumbent was likely to have been able to bid. According to Page, late in the process the MoD did state that if BFBS should lose the contract it would be open to negotiations to buy the equipment, but he says the inability to negotiate on this point in advance made it impossible to accurately assess the costs, which was a key requirement of the bid process. Garrison Radio asked the MoD to re-run the tender “under more competitive criteria” but the request was refused. The future of Garrison Radio operations at over 20 forces locations in the UK now appears uncertain, with Sir Bob Russell, MP for Colchester, calling for a statement about “preventing the British Forces Broadcasting Service from snuffing out local Garrison Radio services”. BFBS will now continue to broadcast to forces and their dependents in Cyprus until 2023. The station currently operates BFBS One, a pop network, and the popular easy-listening BFBS Two, which also relays programmes from BBC domestic radio. A charitable trust, the Services Sound and Vision Corporation, currently receives the funds from the government and the money is then used by BFBS.

Home Renowned Cypriot artist dies aged 83 CYPRUS’ art world suffered a great loss today with the passing away of one of its most distinguished artists, Stelios Votsis, at age 83. Votsis, who was one of the founders of the Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts, played an important role in the direction and development of Cypriot art. He belonged to the first generation of Cypriot artists who appeared after the island’s independence. Born in Larnaca in 1929, he studied fine arts at Central Saint Martin’s School of Arts, the Sir John Cass College and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He graduated from the Slade School of Art of the University of London in 1955. His work has been exhibited in numerous art galleries in Cyprus and abroad, in countries such as England, Italy, Greece, Germany and the US. His latest exhibition was at Zacharias Gallery in Limassol, which ended on the 31 th of October this year.
CY is optimistic about new plan Cash-strapped national carrier must offload over 400 people under new rescue scheme By George Psyllides
From the recent exhibition at Zacharias Gallery, Limassol
THE chairman of troubled national carrier Cyprus Airways (CY) yesterday appeared optimistic about a restructuring plan that reportedly provides for over 400 layoffs, pay cuts and the introduction of new working hours. The airline currently has a staff of 1,030. “The fact that we approved it and referred it to parliament recommending its approval means we are optimistic,” Stavros Stavrou said. Drafting a viable plan was a condition set by parliament before it releases the second tranche of a €31 million share capital increase and would have to be approved by lawmakers before it can be implemented. The plan, which was
leaked on Thursday, must also make the airline attractive to any strategic investor wishing to acquire a majority stake in CY. Reports said the plan calls for cutting personnel by 407 to 623, bringing salaries down to the levels of the competition and introducing work hours to suit the needs of the airline in the current competitive environment.
PROFIT Drafted by Air FranceKLM, the plan is expected to bear fruit at the end of 2013 with a profit of 1.7 million euros and in its fifth year, profits would go as high as 18.5 million. The plan would however take an additional investment of €60 million, reports said. The CY chairman said discussions with the unions will start immediately
after parliament gives its views. “That is where we hope – and have no doubt – that we will have help from the unions to proceed to the next stage,” Stavrou said. He said the sooner the plan was implemented the better for everyone. Stavrou declined to comment on the provisions, adding that leaking them to the media did not help the efforts to help the airline. He reiterated that sacrifices would be necessary “and I do not believe there is anyone inside or outside CY who believes that this endeavour can be successful if there are no sacrifices.” The national carrier posted a €32.1 million loss in the first half of the year as passenger and cargo revenues dwindled. Sex abuse allegations denied THE treasurer of the Conservative Party under former prime minister Margaret Thatcher yesterday denied allegations he had sexually abused children in the 1970s and 1980s and warned he may sue to protect his reputation. Lord Alistair McAlpine, who served as party treasurer from 1975 to 1990, said in a statement that he had been named by ill-informed commentators on the Internet and in the media as the unidentified man accused by one paedophile victim of abusing children in social care. “Even though these allegations made of me by implication in the broadcast and print media, and made directly about me on the internet, are wholly false and seriously defamatory I can no longer expect the broadcast and print media to maintain their policy of defaming me only by innuendo,” he said. “I therefore have decided that in order to mitigate, if only to some small extent, the damage to my reputation I must publicly tackle these slurs and set the record straight,” he said. “In doing so I am by no means giving up my right to sue those who have de-
Lord Alistair McAlpine denied allegations he had sexually abused children in the 1970s and 1980s famed me in the recent past or who may do so in the future.” The abuse claims, which follow the unmasking of late BBC star presenter Jimmy Savile as one of Britain’s most prolific sex offenders, had stoked concern that a powerful paedophile ring may have operated in Britain in the 1970s and 1980. That could have proven damaging to Prime Minister David Cameron’s party -
which rules in an uneasy coalition with centrists - and tarnished the image of the era of Margaret Thatcher, prime minister from 1979 to 1990. Cameron ordered an investigation this week after Steven Messham, one of hundreds of victims of sexual abuse at children’s care homes in Wales over two decades, said in an interview aired by the BBC that a prominent member of the Conservative party had abused him during the 1970s. That provoked a wave of speculation on social media sites and in the UK media that McAlpine was one of the suspected Conservative politicians. “I am, as is now well known to readers of the internet and to journalists working for the print and broadcast media, one of the individuals implicated by Mr Messham,” McAlpine said. “I did not sexually abuse Mr Messham or any other residents of the children’s home in Wrexham.” “Any abuse of children is abhorrent but the sexual abuse to which these vulnerable children were subjected in the 1970s and 1980s is particularly abhorrent,” he said.

Britain to stop financial aid to India from 2015
By Martha Linden
BRITAIN is to make no new financial aid commitments to India with immediate effect, International Development Secretary Justine Greening announced yesterday. The move will stop all financial assistance from the United Kingdom to India from 2015, and will save about £200 million between now and then. Greening, who took responsibility for Britain’s aid budget in September, said programmes already under way would be completed as planned but no new ones would be signed off. British support for India will in future be limited to skills-sharing in areas like trade and investment and health. “After reviewing the programme and hold-
THE next Archbishop of Canterbury issued an upbeat message yesterday saying he is “utterly optimistic” about the future of the Church of England in spite of the “hard issues” it faces over women bishops and the issue of sexuality. The Rt Rev Justin Welby, Bishop of Durham, spoke of the “massive sense of privilege” of being one of those responsible for the leadership of the Church of England as Downing Street confirmed his appointment as successor to Dr Rowan Williams. He said: “To be nominated to this post is both astonishing and exciting. It is something I never expected, and the last few weeks have been a very strange experience. “It is exciting because we are at one of those rare points
ing discussions with the government of India this week, we agreed that now is the time to move to a relationship focusing on skills-sharing rather than aid,” the International Development Secretary said. “Having visited India I have seen first hand the tremendous progress being made. India is successfully developing and our own bilateral relationship has to keep up with 21st century India. It’s time to recognise India’s changing place in the world. “It is of course critical that we fulfil all the commitments we have already made and that we continue with those shortterm projects already under way which are an important part of the UK and government of India’s development programme.”
Ash blight will never be eradicated, says minister THE disease blighting ash trees in Britain will be impossible to eradicate, Environment Secretary Owen Paterson said yesterday but that does not necessarily mean the end for one of the country’s most widespread native species. “If we can slow its spread and minimise its impact, we will gain time to find those
trees with genetic resistance to the disease and to restructure our woodlands to make them more resilient,” Paterson added. Tens of thousands of trees have already been burned in an effort to halt the spread of the airborne fungal disease Chalara fraxinea, more commonly called ash dieback.
The blight has already killed up to 90 per cent of ash trees in Denmark and has now been found in the wild in several areas of Britain. “The scientific advice is that it won’t be possible to eradicate this disease now that we have discovered it in mature trees in Great Britain,” Paterson confirmed.
where the tide of events is turning, and the church nationally, including the Church of England, has great opportunities to match its very great but often hidden strengths.” In a relaxed statement and question-and-answer session attended by his wife Caroline, and five children, in the Guard Room of Lambeth Palace, the Rt Rev Welby paid tribute to Dr Williams, saying that he believed he would be recognised as “one of the greatest” Archbishops of Canterbury. The Rt Rev Welby, 56, said he backed the Church of England bishops’ statement in summer which was highly critical of government proposals to introduce gay marriage, but he warned there must be “no truck with any form of homophobia” in any part of the church. He urged the General Synod to vote later this month in favour of giving final approval
to legislation introducing the first women bishops saying he was “deeply committed” to the ordination of women to the episcopate. The Rt Rev Welby also paid tribute to the grassroots work of the Church of England in its parishes, and spoke of the “great privilege” of serving under a number of bishops including the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu. He paid tribute to his diocese of Durham, where he was enthroned as bishop less than a year ago, saying leaving would be “one of the hardest” things. The former oil executive will be enthroned as Archbishop of Canterbury at Canterbury Cathedral on March 21 next year. He takes over from Dr Williams who leaves after a decade in post at the end of this year to become Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge.

World WORLD TODAY Putin dismisses chief of staff RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin replaced the chief of his military staff on Friday in a reshuffle that stamped the authority of the Kremlin chief, and his new defence minister, on the armed forces after a corruption scandal. Putin removed General Nikolai Makarov after four years as the nuclear power’s top general and replaced him with General Valery Gerasimov, 57, a commander who fought Muslim separatists in the Chechnya region. Changes had been expected to allow new Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to bring in his own team after replacing Anatoly Serdyukov, sacked on Tuesday after an investigation began into suspicious sales of ministry property to insiders. Putin told Gerasimov to press on with reforms to modernise the armed forces and, hinting at tensions that had mounted under Serdyukov’s stewardship, the president told him to improve relations with the defence industry.
Breivik letter THE Norwegian convicted of the massacre of 77 people last year has said he is being held in “inhumane” conditions. Anders Behring Breivik complained in a letter to the prison service that his coffee is served cold, he does not have enough butter for his bread, and he is not allowed moisturiser. Breivik is serving a minimum 21-year sentence for the bombings and shootings in Oslo and Utoeya island last July. The Norwegian authorities have not commented on the letter.

Pope to get different sort of followers on Twitter POPE Benedict already has 1.2 billion “followers” in the standard sense of the word, but he soon will have another type when he enters what for any 85-year-old is the brave new world of Twitter. Vatican officials say the pontiff, who is known not to love computers and still writes most of his speeches by hand, will have his own handle by the end of the year. “It will be an officially verified channel,” said a Vatican official. Primarily the tweets will come from the contents of his weekly general audience, Sunday blessings and homilies on major Church holidays. They will also include reaction to major world events, such as natural disasters. The leader of the world’s 1.2 billion or
cial networks offered “a great opportunity”, but warned of the risks of de-personalisation, alienation, self-indulgence and the dangers of having more virtual friends than real ones. In 2009, a new Vatican website, www. pope2you.net, went live, offering an application called “The pope meets you on Facebook”, and another allowing the faithful to see the pontiff’s speeches and messages on their iPhones or iPods. The Vatican famously got egg on its face in 2009 when it was forced to admit that, if it had surfed the web more, it might have known that a traditionalist bishop whose excommunication was lifted had for years been a Holocaust denier.
Obama set for trip to Myanmar this month Visit due despite sectarian violence By Aung Hla Tun and Matt Spetalnick PRESIDENT Barack Obama will become the first U.S. leader to visit Myanmar this month, the strongest international endorsement of the fragile democratic transition in the Southeast Asian country after half a century of military rule. Obama will travel to Myanmar during a November 17-20 tour of Southeast Asia that will also take in Thailand and Cambodia, the White House said on Thursday, confirming his first international trip since he won a second term in Tuesday’s election. He is going ahead with the trip despite recent sectarian violence in western Myanmar that has drawn concern from the United States and European Union. UN human rights investigators have criticised the quasicivilian government’s handling of the strife between Buddhists and minority Muslims, and some Myanmar exiles see Obama’s trip as premature before political reforms have been consolidated. The visit to Myanmar, the first by a sitting US president, will give Obama a chance to

But even divine intervention might not help squeeze the gist of a papal encyclical, which can run to more than 140 pages, into 140 characters. Those tweets will probably be limited to a link to a URL with the entire document. The papal handle has not yet been disclosed but it is widely expected to be @ BenedictusPPXVI, his name and title in Latin. The pope has given a qualified blessing to social networking. President Obama will become the first American leader to visit Myanmar meet President Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to encourage the “ongoing democratic transition”, White House spokesman Jay Carney said. Suu Kyi spent years in detention under the military as the figurehead of the movement for democracy. She was elected to parliament in April, when her National League for Democracy (NLD) ran in byelections after boycotting a 2010 poll. Obama will be in Myanmar on November 19, according to a senior government source in Yangon, where people expressed delight.
“I believe it is a clear sign of improved ties between the two countries and I am very glad that our NLD party played an important role in working for the emergence of this situation,” said NLD executive committee member Han Tha Myint. Myint Soe, vice-chairman of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, said the historic visit showed Myanmar had now been admitted into the international community. “It’s good for President Obama to see things with his own eyes,” he said. “I would like to request him to keep

encouraging the democratisation process in our country by helping to promote the socioeconomic standards of the people.” Obama’s presence in Myanmar, also known as Burma, will highlight what his administration sees as a first-term foreign policy achievement and a development that could help counter China’s influence in a strategically important region. Washington takes some credit for pushing Myanmar’s long-ruling generals toward democratic change and led to Thein Sein taking office as a reformist president in 2011.

Landmark visit ‘no risk to Chinese interests’ A LANDMARK trip by U.S. President Barack Obama to Myanmar this month poses no threat to China’s interests in the Southeast Asian country, a senior Chinese official from a key border province said yesterday. Obama will become the first US leader to visit Myanmar, the strongest international endorsement of a fragile democratic transition that his administration believes could help counter China’s influence in a strategically important region. Chinese media, academics and even a few diplomats have worried that US engagement in rapidly democratising Myanmar could threaten Beijing’s relationship with what had been an important trade partner and de facto ally. But Qin Guangrong, the Communist Party chief of Yunnan province, which borders Myanmar and has deep business ties with it, said China was fully behind its opening up, especially as peace and stability there would benefit China. Qin said he was well aware of Obama’s pending trip. “We understand and support the wish of the Myanmar authorities wanting to open up and become part of the world,” he said on the sidelines of a Communist Party congress, in rare comments on a sensitive relationship. “We believe that Myanmar’s leaders will exercise their wisdom to lead their country’s opening up. They know that the people of China will always be true friends of Myanmar’s.”

World Rhino poacher gets record jail sentence
‘11,000 refugees flee Syria in 24 hours,’ says UN Erdogan decries UNSC inertia on the matter By Jonathon Burch and Rania El Gamal THOUSANDS of Syrians fled their country yesterday in one of the biggest refugee exoduses of the 20 month war after rebels seized a border town. Syria’s fractious opposition was meeting in Qatar, under increasing pressure from the United States and Qatar to unite and form a credible body capable of ruling the country effectively if President Bashar al-Assad falls. The United Nations said 11,000 refugees had fled in 24 hours, most to Turkey. The exodus is testing the patience of Ankara, the most militarily capable of Syria’s neighbours and a strong opponent of Assad. Ankara has long said a full-blown refugee emergency would demand robust intervention.
Rebels overran the frontier town of Ras al-Ain late on Thursday, continuing a drive that has already seen them push Assad’s troops from much of the north and seize several crossing points, a rebel commander and opposition sources said. “The crossing is important because it opens another line to Turkey, where we can send the wounded and get supplies,” said Khaled alWalid, a commander in the Raqqa rebel division. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based group that compiles opposition activist reports, said at least 20 members of the Syrian security forces were killed when rebel fighters attacked a security headquarters in Ras al-Ain. Thousands of residents poured out of the Arab and Kurd town, in the northeast-
ern oil-producing province of Hasaka, 600 km (375 miles) from Damascus. Turkey’s Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan hit out at world powers on the UN Security Council over their inaction. “It is very strange. There are currently atrocities being committed in Syria and these atrocities are being directed by a state leader,” he said. “How far will this go? When will the permanent members of the Security Council take responsibility?” Turkey has responded in kind to mortar shells hitting its soil from fighting in Syria and is discussing with NATO allies whether to deploy Patriot air defence missiles on the border. The Turkish state-run Anatolian news agency reported that 26 Syrian military officers had also arrived in Turkey
Iran, IAEA plan new negotiations in December IRAN will return to talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency next month, the U.N. nuclear watchdog said yesterday, the latest push to seek a peaceful end to a dispute that has raised fears of a new Middle East war. The IAEA announcement came days after US President Barack Obama’s re-election, which some analysts say may give fresh impetus to diplomatic efforts to end to a decade-old standoff with a country the West accuses of working towards nuclear weapons capability. In a stark reminder of how tensions could escalate, the Pentagon said on Thursday that Iranian warplanes fired at an unarmed US drone in the Gulf last week. The IAEA said it hoped the talks in Tehran on December 13 would produce an agreement to allow it to resume a long-stalled investigation into possible military aspects of Iran’s nuclear programme. The agency says it has “credible information indicating that Iran had carried out activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device” and wants Tehran
to give it access to sites, officials and documents to clarify the issue. Iran denies it wants atomic bombs and has repeatedly ruled out stopping its atomic activities. A series of meetings since early this year, the last one in August, failed to make concrete progress. Israel, assumed to be the Middle East’s only nuclear-armed power, has threatened military action if it looks like Tehran is close to getting nuclear weapons capability. “The aim (of the talks) is to conclude the structured approach to resolving outstanding issues related to Iran’s nuclear programme,” agency spokeswoman Gill Tudor said. A Western diplomat was sceptical, noting that the talks would only take place after the next meeting of the IAEA’s 35-nation governing board. “So it is the usual scenario: defer criticism now by promising something later. Something that has failed to materialise the last four times,” the envoy said.
Syrians cross the border into Turkey yesterday near the Turkish town of Ceylanpinar (AFP) with their families overnight in what it called the biggest mass desertion of senior soldiers from Assad’s forces in months. The latest flight of refugees raised the total recorded by the United Nations to 408,000. The International Committee of the Red Cross said on Thursday it could not keep
up with the increasingly dire needs of civilians. Advancing rebels managed to fire mortars at the presidential palace in Damascus this week. Assad told Russia Today television on Thursday he would “live and die in Syria”, echoing words of other Arab leaders before they lost power last year.
A SOUTH African court gave a Thai man a record 40-year jail sentence yesterday for an elaborate fraud to ship poached rhinoceros horns to Asia after the animals were killed in fake “hunts”. Chumlong Lemtongthai took advantage of the fact it is legal for foreigners to hunt rhinos in South Africa and ship horns overseas as personal trophies. He paid Thai prostitutes about $800 each to go to game farms, take a few shots with small-calibre rifles and then pose next to rhinos killed by someone else, according to affidavits presented to the court. Judge Prince Manyathi said Chumlong fraudulently obtained hunting permits to kill 26 rhinos and then shipped most of the horns to Asia for “selfish financial gain”. “The shooting was not for trophy hunting. It was for horn trading,” Manyathi said. South Africa is home to almost all of Africa’s rhinos and has been in an escalating arms race with poachers who smuggle horns to China, Thailand, Vietnam and elsewhere. Its value there as a medicine is about $65,000 a kilogram, making it more expensive than gold.

Business HSBC accounts probed by taxman
London grabs BoE cash for a short-term boost
HSBC, Europe’s biggest bank, has been hit by the leaking of client account data in the British tax haven of Jersey which is now being looked at by the country’s tax authorities. The authorities confirmed they were looking into details of clients in Jersey after being handed a list of names, addresses and account balances. “We can confirm we have received the data and we are studying it. We receive information from a very wide range of sources which we use to ensure the tax rules are being respected,” HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) said in a statement. HSBC said it was investigating the alleged loss of client data, first reported in The Daily Telegraph, “as a matter of urgency”. “We have not been notified of any investigation in relation to this matter by HMRC or any other authority but, should we receive notification, we will cooperate fully with the authorities,” the bank said yesterday. HSBC said it was “fully committed to adoption of the highest global standards including the procedures for the acceptance of clients”. This marks another potential blow for HSBC which has been criticised by US regulators for lax anti-money laundering controls in Mexico and elsewhere, and last year saw thousands of its Swiss clients probed by the British taxman. The bank’s London-listed shares dipped 0.8 per cent by 1150 GMT, firmer than a 1.6 per cent drop by the European banking index. After the financial crisis, the global banking industry is under intense scrutiny over its standards and past practices, which have included mis-selling of financial products and interest rate-rigging.
Government grabs £35b windfall to reduce short-term borrowing By David Milliken and Sven Egenter BRITAIN’S cash-strapped government said yesterday it would grab an expected £35 billion ($55.9 billion) windfall from the Bank of England’s bond-buying programme to reduce shortterm borrowing. BoE Governor Mervyn King said the move equated to a modest loosening of monetary policy, potentially giving a boost to the stagnant economy, and economists said it may help finance minister George Osborne meet his debt reduction targets. But the government’s budget watchdog warned the step would bring longer-term costs once interest rates start to rise, and some analysts said it raised concerns about the central bank’s independence and the possible future monetisation of debt - traditionally viewed by economists as a big inflation risk. Until now, the BoE has kept the interest earned on £375 billion of government debt it has bought since March 2009 under an asset purchase programme aimed at boosting Britain’s economy. Those payments will total around £35 billion by next March.
Bank of England Governor Mervyn King said the government’s move equated to a modest loosening of monetary policy (EPA) But now the BoE will have to transfer this money and future interest payments back to the government - bringing British practice in line with that in the United States and Japan, which also have central bank asset purchase schemes. “Holding large amounts of cash (by the BoE) is economically inefficient as it requires the government to borrow money to fund these ... payments,” the finance ministry said, adding that it would use the money saved to reduce public borrowing in the current and future tax years. Gilt prices rallied on the
news as it implies lower bond issuance in the short term, although the head of Britain’s debt issuance agency, Robert Stheeman, told Reuters he expected the long-run impact on the market to be “negligible”. On Thursday the BoE’s Monetary Policy Committee decided not to conduct further asset purchases, and King said he had told the MPC of the government’s plans before they made the decision. “The Committee views the use of coupon income to reduce the stock of outstanding gilts as having an effect
Athens set to get two more years to cut Greece debt

EUROZONE finance ministers are unlikely to release a new tranche of loans to Greece on Monday as there is no agreement yet on how to make its debt sustainable but Athens is set to get two more years to cut debt, officials said.
Eurozone finance ministers, called the Eurogroup, meet on Monday in Brussels where the main topic of their discussions will be unfreezing lending to Greece, held up after Athens went way off track with promised reforms and
fiscal consolidation. Even though Greece passed a structural reform package in parliament on Wednesday and is to vote through an austerity budget for 2013 on Sunday, the ministers are not in a position to make a final decision.

similar to the MPC purchasing gilts of the same value,” King said. The Office for Budget Responsibility warned the move did not represent a free lunch for the government, however, and that the money it received now would be offset by higher costs in future. “While this change will have a positive impact on the public finances in the short term, it will turn negative as and when monetary policy tightens,” the OBR said. A detailed assessment of how the move affects finance minister Osborne’s previously receding chances of meet-
ing politically sensitive debt and deficit goals would appear in the OBR’s next forecast update on December 5, the watchdog added. Without the measure, Osborne would probably have had either to introduce more austerity measures on top of the spending cuts and tax hikes planned to erase a huge budget deficit or scrap at least one of the two fiscal targets. However, Citi economist Michael Saunders said it may allow the government to meet a goal of putting net debt as a share of the economy on a downward path by 2015. “The reduction in the debt/ GDP ratio may just about be enough for the OBR to project that the government will probably hit its target of a falling debt/GDP ratio in 2015/16, whereas previously that appeared out of reach,” he said. “This transfer is more or less equivalent to extra QE, 35 billion upfront and a further 15 billion pounds or so per year thereafter,” Saunders said. But other strategists cast doubt on whether the move would bring any long-term benefit. “The words ‘smoke and mirrors’ are an appropriate epithet,” said Marc Ostwald, fixed income strategist at Monument Securities. “It reduces the pressure on Osborne to find more revenue and/or spending cuts in the short-term. It does not actually reduce the structural budget deficit that Osborne is targeting,” he added. Royal Bank of Scotland economist Ross Walker warned the decision raised questions about the BoE’s operational independence and the possibility of a future “monetisation”, or writingoff, of the BoE’s entire holdings of public debt.

Iberia to axe 4,500 jobs in survival fight SPANISH airline Iberia is to axe almost a quarter of its workforce and rationalise its network under a restructuring plan launched yesterday by its parent International Airlines Group, the owner of British Airways. Iberia, Europe’s biggest carrier to Latin America, has been battling competition from low-cost airlines and highspeed trains, labour disputes and Spain’s deep economic crisis and bleeding cash as revenue fails to cover high operating costs. “Iberia is in a fight for survival and we will transform it to reduce its cost base so it can grow profitably in the future,” IAG’s chief executive Willie Walsh said. IAG’s plans got an angry response in Spain, where pilots’ union SEPLA and the two biggest general unions, the UGT and CCOO, immediately threatened strike action. IAG, which was formed by the 2011 merger of BA and Iberia, said it hopes the restructuring plan will improve profits by at least 600 million euros ($764 million) in the next three years. The group posted a 96 per cent fall in nine-month operating profits yesterday, to 17 million euros, pulled lower by high fuel costs and a 262 million-euro operating loss at Iberia.

Opinion
Obama and the weather Only time will tell whether good sense will prevail at Cyprus Airways THE RESCUE proposal prepared for Cyprus Airways by Air France Consulting may have been approved by the airline’s board and submitted to the House of Representatives, but it seems highly unlikely the staff unions will accept it without protest. There was no immediate reaction, presumably because unions were still studying the 91-page restructuring plan that would radically change the company. The plan suggests 407 staff redundancies, compared to 250 that management had agreed with the unions and the government several months ago. More importantly it sets out to abolish all the costly perks and privileges of staff in the collective agreements, which unions secured in the good old days. It envisages drastic pay cuts for all staff, to bring wages in line with what is paid by the competition, the scrapping of anachronistic and rigid provisions from the collective agreements and the introduction of new working hours that would cater to the operational needs of the airline. What are the chances of Cyprus Airways’ militant pilots agreeing to pay cuts of 40 or 50 per cent so that their wages are similar to the competition’s? Is this likely to ever happen? And what about the workers’ conquests which are enshrined in the collective agreements and the consultants described as anachronistic and rigid? As for the new working hours, would staff agree to a shift system of work which would eliminate overtime pay? The biggest issue, however, would be the proposed laying off of 407 employees. The unions would demand huge amounts in compensation to agree to such a number of redundancies. If the total compensation cost for making 250 employees redundant was €17 million, for 407 workers it would be in excess of €25 million. The rational approach if the objective is to save the national carrier would be to drastically cut the redundancy package. It is a provocation for the overpaid and underworked staff at state-owned companies to be paid a king’s ransom when they are made redundant. Their compensation should be the same as what is paid in the private sector. We doubt any politician would make this point when the issue of the compensation cost comes up, even though they will object to the additional funding requirements of the airline. The consultants suggested a cash injection, in addition to the €45m increase in share capital, of €60m to see the company through the difficult adjustment period. The total cost to the taxpayer would be €73m, but it is not clear whether this includes the compensation cost for the redundancies. Would the unions accept the rescue package and if they do, will our bankrupt state be able to finance it? We shall see whether good sense would prevail and the state will be able to finance it.

T’S HARD to know how much impact New York mayor Michael Bloomberg’s comments about climate change after Hurricane Sandy had on the US election. It’s easy to overestimate that sort of thing, but President Barack Obama’s victory in several states was so razor-thin that Bloomberg’s last-minute intervention may have been decisive. What’s crystal clear is that Obama himself didn’t want to talk about it during the campaign. Bloomberg, responding to the devastation he saw in New York City, laid it on the line. “Our climate is changing. And while the increase in extreme weather we have experienced in New York City and around the world may or may not have been the result of it, the risk that it may be... should be enough to compel all elected leaders to take immediate action.” The New York mayor, a former Republican, did not hesitate to assign praise and blame: “Over the past four years, President Barack Obama has taken major steps to reduce our carbon consumption, including setting higher fuel-efficiency standards for cars and trucks. Mitt Romney, too has a history of tackling climate change...He couldn’t have been more right. But since then, he has reversed course.” He said this only five days before the election, in the immediate aftermath of a national calamity that may well have been climate-related. So did Obama pick up the ball and run with
Comment Gwynne Dyer it? Certainly not. Apart from a one-liner about how climate change “threatens the future of our children” in a single speech, he remained stubbornly silent. Rightly or wrongly, Obama and his team have been convinced for the past four years that talking about climate change is political suicide. Nor did he actually do all that much: higher fuel-efficiency standards for vehicles was his only major initiative. And Mitt Romney, of course, said not a word about climate change: you cannot take this problem seriously and retain any credibility in today’s Republican Party. So was all the instant speculation about how Hurricane Sandy might finally awaken Americans to the dangers of climate change just wishful thinking? Not necessarily. Obama faces a daunting array of problems as he begins his second term: avoiding the “fiscal cliff”, restraining Israel from attacking Iran, tackling the huge budget deficit, and getting US troops out of Afghanistan. But the biggest problem facing every country is climate change, and he knows it. Otherwise, he would never have appointed a man like John Holdren to be his chief scientific adviser.
Holdren, a former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, is one of the leading proponents of action on climate change. He is also savvy enough politically to understand why Obama couldn’t do much about it during his first term, and he didn’t flounce out in a rage when the president avoided that fight. Obama rarely starts fights he cannot win, and it was clear from the day he took office in 2009 that he couldn’t get any climate-related legislation through Congress. That’s why his fuel-efficiency initiative was his only first-term accomplishment on this front: that did not require legislation, and was done as a regulatory initiative by the Environmental Protection Agency. To what extent has his re-election changed this equation? Second-term US presidents, who no longer have to worry about re-election, often act more boldly than in their first term. The US economy is clearly in recovery mode, and Obama will (quite justly) get the credit for that. That will give him more leeway to act on other issues, and the environmental disasters of the past year may finally be pushing American public opinion towards a recognition that the threat of climate change is real. There is not yet any opinionpolling data on that, but it wouldn’t be surprising. This year has seen meltdown in the Arctic, heatwaves that killed over ten per cent of the
main grain crops in the United States, big changes in the jetstream (which may be responsible for the prolonged highpressure zone that steered Hurricane Sandy into New York), and then the fury of the storm itself. It has long been argued that what is needed to penetrate the American public’s resistance to the bad news of climate change is a major climate-related disaster THAT HURTS PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES. Even if Sandy may not have been a direct consequence of global warming, it fills that bill. It may get the donkey’s attention at last. There is no guarantee of that, and each year the risk grows that the average global temperature will eventually rise by over 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F) and topple into uncontrollable, runaway warming. Moreover, the Republicans still control the lower house of Congress. But hope springs eternal, and at last there is some. The past two weeks have seen an unexpected and promising conjunction of events: a weather event that may shake the American public’s denial of climate change, and the reelection of a president who gets it, and who is now politically free to act on his convictions. As Businessweek (a magazine owned by Michael Bloomberg) put it on last week’s cover: “It’s global warming, stupid.” Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries
Pharming taking place on an industrial scale I’VE just been ‘pharmed’. It’s a new word to me and it’s not pleasant. It refers to a virus cleverly developed by hackers to mimic in every sense the website you are visiting. It inserts a screen into an online site which you merrily use to access bonafide shopping, banking and other services, and is official enough to defraud you of your personal data. Yesterday, after submitting my usual ID and password to Lloyds, a screen shot emerged with an utterly convincing ‘Extra security’ page asking for such information as: date of birth, memorable info etc. Fortunately, I became suspicious, rang the helpline and heard a weary voice at the end telling me I had an infection and immediately my account would be frozen. I was to run Spyware scans and present myself in person at the

bank with my passport when I was sure my computer was fixed. They may as well have given me a bell saying unclean and put a red cross on my door for it was intimated that this plague was a curse of my own doing. “Aren’t you interested in finding the hackers?” I asked naively. There was a silence at the other end of the phone. Then, “It is not our computers that have been hacked” was the answer. I

tried a ‘But... ’ , thinking if someone was posing as me I’d want to find out who the culprit was and hunt them down. But the truth is they can’t find the hackers. Cybercrime is costing us all millions through bank scams and fraudulent websites. American Bank suggests that around 5 per cent of customers are deceived into giving their identity away and allowing thieves access to clean out their accounts. It’s scary stuff. It involved, of course, changing all my passwords, and running a six hour clean-up on my computer (twice) and then doing a system restore to some golden age before the virus had hit. But now my computer is running slow, it is probable, according to the nice man in India who is talking to me on the phone as I write this that, not only my computer has been attacked,
but the router too, and not just my router, but even back to the substation. He will have to run some checks. This is pharming on an industrial scale, with cloning and genetic modification. When Armageddon finally comes, and the ultimate plague plunges us all into the total darkness of cyber chaos: it won’t be frogs, locusts or some bacterial warfare waged from a rogue state, it will be little Trojan horses lovingly pharmed somewhere in middle America or in a tenement in Shanghai by a kid in glasses and nerdy T shirt. If only we could press system restore they’d be on cold railway stations happily ticking off engine numbers. I am going to stock up on pens and paper, for surely, when the day comes, the pen will be mightier than the keyboard.

Kardashian launches Jenny McCarthy’s sex confession a new fashion range KIM Kardashian has launched her new clothing range in London - but confessed she still makes fashion faux pas. The curvaceous socialite and her sister Kourtney, famed for reality TV shows such as Keeping Up With The Kardashians, joined retail mogul Sir Philip Green to promote the Kardashian Kollection at Dorothy Perkins. Kim, who is dating rapper Kanye West, revealed at London’s Aqua restaurant: “I look back at things from really recently and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, why did I wear that, what was I thinking?’ But it’s fun. You see what you like and what you don’t and experiment.” Kim - who wore a black sequinned mini-dress for the launch - said her famous boyfriend has been supportive of her latest business venture.
LIKES THE WAY I DRESS “He likes the way I dress,” she added. Kim and Kourtney worked on the range with sister Khloe, who was unable to attend because of filming commitments on the US version of The X Factor, which she co-presents. Mum-of-two Kourtney praised British women’s “individual style”. She said: “It’s not like matchy-matchy, everyone in the same thing, it’s very different.” Also in attendance were some of the X Factor contestants, including Ella Henderson. Ella, 16, said: “What I love is that the three Kardashians together are so different, so unique, and put them together and they’re like this boom of energy in the room. I’m really excited to meet them.”
The former Playboy Playmate of the Year revealed all
THE 40-year-old model - who has previously dated Jim Carrey - once took too much of the party drug ecstasy, and found herself pressed up against a tree trying to have intercourse with it after becoming unsteady on her feet. She said: “I found myself holding a tree to brace myself. The texture felt so good that I decided to rub my head and boobs all over it. It was a tree I was humping!” However, it was not the only trouble Jenny had while taking the drug - her friends suggested going to get help once when they freaked out about how much they had taken, until the former Playboy Playmate of the Year realised they were all naked and best not. She said: “I noticed that we weren’t wearing anything. So I responded, ‘Let’s not. We’re naked. Let’s just try to sneak back to the beach and get our clothes.’ “ Jenny also reveals she once had direct contact with God, but what she heard did not please her.
DOZENS of excited Twilight fans set up tents in Los Angeles on Thursday ahead of next week’s world premiere of the last film in the vampire romance franchise. Some 2,200 people from all over the world have registered to camp on a concrete plaza outside a downtown Los Angeles movie theatre, movie studio Summit Entertainment said. The fans - most of them young women - will get guaranteed spots to see stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner walk the red carpet for the November 12 premiere of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2. Summit has laid on special activities during the five-day wait, including a marathon screening of the four other films in the blockbuster franchise, surprise appearances from some cast members, and a Twilight-themed workout. “We figured it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for some of us. This is the last movie. We’re never going to get to do it again and we wanted to hang out with some of our friends for the last one,” Bri-Anne Glover told Reuters Television as she settled in at the camp on Thursday. “I love Breaking Dawn because that’s kind of where I am in my life. I’ve got the husband, I’ve got my children, and we’re getting on with our lives and having a happy life and the same with Edward and Jacob and Bella,” said fan Eryka Bradford. The Twilight books by author Stephenie Meyer have been a publishing sensation and the four movies have made more than $2.5 billion combined at box offices worldwide. The final film sees the bliss of newlyweds Bella (Stewart) and Edward (Pattinson) and their daughter threatened by an ancient vampire coven. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 opens in several European countries on November 14 and arrives in US movie theatres on November 16.

The app’s the thing as Shakespeare joins digital world
Humble cassette tape may still have future
WILLIAM Shakespeare’s plays are getting a 21st century-style makeover in the form of new apps for tablets and smart phones nearly 500 years after the Bard took pen to parchment. Plays such as Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth spring to life in iPad apps released by Cambridge University Press, which pairs the texts with audio performances, commentary and other interactive content, transforming the classic plays for the digital age. The apps are part of a new series called Explore Shakespeare that was introduced by the British publishing house to expand the playwright’s reach to casual readers. “A lot of people have a copy of Shakespeare on their bookshelf that they never got around to reading because they have this idea that Shakespeare is hard or has to be studied to be appreciated,” said John Pettigrew, executive producer of the Explore Shakespeare series. Pettigrew believes the plays are meant to be enjoyed and are accessible provided readers are given context to overcome outdated or poetic language.
Tape ideal for cheap and green data storage
While the core focus of the app is on the actual text, readers can consult glossaries, notes, photos and synopses at any point in the script. “Everything there is designed to keep you in the play and to put you in the mind of the actor, director or writer,” he explained. To understand less common language, readers can tap on words and phrases to delve into their meaning. “A classic one is in Romeo and Juliet which is ‘wherefore art thou Romeo?’ It’s not ‘where are you Romeo?’, It’s ‘why are you Romeo?’ So that kind of phrase gets a glossary to explain what is meant,” said Pettigrew. The apps also include full audio performances from stars such as Kate Beckinsale and Martin Sheen. Other features help readers to visualise relations between actors in a scene, understand how Shakespeare interweaves themes throughout the play, and to analyse the text more thoroughly. Pettigrew believes the app could play a role in education, with students embracing the app over its print counterpart.
The apps are part of a series called Explore Shakespeare
By Chris Wickham THE widening gap between the amount of data the world produces and our capacity to store it is giving a new lease of life to the humble cassette tape. Although consumers have abandoned the audio cassette in favour of the ubiquitous iPod, organisations with large amounts of data, from patient records to capacity-hungry video archives, have continued to use tape as a cheap and secure storage medium. Researchers at IBM are trying to keep this 60-yearold technology relevant for at least the next decade and they are getting help from rising energy costs, which are forcing companies to look for cheaper alternatives to stacks of power-hungry hard drives. Evangelos Eleftheriou and his colleagues at IBM Research in Zurich, Switzerland, have developed a cassette just 10 cm by 10cm by 2cm that can hold about 35 terabytes of data, the equivalent of a library with 400 kilometres of bookshelves. “It is really the greenest storage technology,” Eleftheriou told Reuters. “Tape at rest, consumes literally zero power.” Unlike hard drive storage devices, which have to be on continuously, tape systems
Researchers at IBM in Zurich have developed a cassette that can hold about 35 terabytes of data, the equivalent of a library with 400 kilometres of bookshelves only consume power when data is being read or recorded, giving them a carbon footprint a fraction that of their disc-based counterparts. Latency is the biggest disadvantage. Tapes have to be retrieved, usually by a robotic selector, and then loaded into a reading device. But for much of the world’s archived data, access time is not critical. From legal archives and company records kept to comply with legislation like the Sarbanes Oxley Act in the United States, to data on traffic flow and weather patterns, keeping secure copies is more important than instant access. “If you have big data then you have really big backups,” said Eleftheriou. This is borne out by an estimate from consultancy
Google reaches out to ‘next billion’ By Jeremy Wagstaff GOOGLE launched a service on Thursday it hopes will push millions of people in the developing world to access the Internet - and Google’s ads - via basic mobile phones. Google is launching the service, called Free Zone, first in the Philippines via local carrier Globe Telecom. The service allows phones with an Internet connection but limited functionality to access basic Google products like search, email and its social networking service Google+ for free. Users could access websites that show up in Google’s search results for free, but any website outside those results would prompt an invitation to subscribe to the mobile operator’s data plan. “It’s aimed at the next billion users of the Internet, many of whom will be in emerging markets and encounter the Internet first on a mobile phone, without ever owning a PC,” AbdelKarim Mardini, product manager for Google, told Reuters. Google and Globe hope that by offering a free layer of services they will entice users of so-called feature phones
Google is launching Free Zone first in the Philippines via Globe Telecom to move beyond just making phone calls and sending SMS messages to sign up for Internet services. Such services are more lucrative for carriers. Google makes most of its money through ads on web pages. It says it plans to roll out the service in other countries soon. While developing countries like the Philippines have been enthusiastic early adopters of cellphones, there are still millions who either use phones too
basic to be used for Internet services, or who are reluctant to shell out for more expensive services. Phones running Google’s Android operating system now account for three quarters of all smartphones shipped, according to consultancy IDC. But that still leaves a lot of phones. The GfK Group, a research company which measures consumer habits, reported in September that while smartphone sales are growing rapidly in Southeast Asia, the more basic feature phones still outnumber their more expensive counterparts. The Philippines, for example, saw a three-fold growth of smartphones in the 12 months up to September, but despite boosting their share, such devices still accounted for only 24 per cent of all mobile phones. Globe and Google are not the only players in the Philippines to target non-smartphone users by offering them a cheaper way to access Internet services. Since launching a pared down Internet service last year, for example, Globe rival Smart Communications said the half million users who signed up spent 150 per cent more on average per month than its other subscribers.
Coughlin Associates that about 400 exabytes, equal to 20 million times the content of US Library of Congress, is currently stored on tape. The new IBM cassette, originally developed with Fuji Film , packs about 29.5 billion bits on a square inch of tape using a coating made from the chemical compound barium ferrite, which maximises so-called linear density - the amount of data that can be squeezed onto a length of the tape. The other limitation is the number of tracks that can be laid down and the researchers have developed novel nanopositioning technologies that can position the read and write heads with an accuracy of 10 to 15 billionths of a metre. Eleftheriou and his team
believe they can increase the storage capacity to 100 billion bits per square inch and they hope this will make tape storage a contender for one of the world’s biggest data collection projects - the huge radio telescope known as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). In just over 10 years the SKA will start scanning the skies from two remote sites in South Africa and Australia, and it will generate 10 times the data traffic of the global internet. “There’s going to be a lot of data pouring out of what is essentially a giant computer with a few bits of metal (the dishes and the antennae) on the ends,” said Andy Faulkner, an astrophysicist at Cambridge University and one of the engineers on the SKA.

Daimler’s vehicle’s frame and wheels were wooden
First motorcycle debut In 1885, the world’s first motorcycle, designed by Gottlieb Daimler, made its debut. The frame and wheels were made of wood. A leather belt transferred power from the engine to large brass gears mounted to the rear wheel. The single cylinder engine had a bore of 58mm and stroke of 100mm giving a displacement of 264ccs. The engine gave 0.5hp at 700 rpm and offered a top speed of 12 km/h. The motorcycle was built to test the new Daimler engine, which was to power Daimler’s first motorised carriage the next year.

On The Scene Other Events Portugal calling There’s no doubt that Nicosia’s cinephiles are spoiled for choice, with everything from the Brazilian Film Festival at the Shoe Factory to the LUX Film Days at the University of Nicosia. Over the next five days, Cine Studio (Intercollege) in Nicosia in collaboration with the Friends of Cinema Society shines a light on a country whose films rarely make it to our screens: Portugal. Portuguese Cinema Week opened last night with Beauty and the Paparazzo, with screenings for four more films to follow. Mention ‘Portuguese cinema’ and the first and possibly only thing that comes to mind is Manoel de Oliveira. The extraordinary thing about this Portuguese director is that he was born in 1908 and is still making films at 103 years of age. A mix of Woody Allen and Eric Rohmer, his output is so prodigious that he has been honoured at all of the world’s major film festivals, and he constantly surprises film buffs with his everchanging subject matter. Two of his films will be screened during the Portuguese Cinema Week, along with two films by renowned director António-Pedro Vasconcelos and one film by Leonel Vieira - a co-production of Portugal, Brazil and Spain. For tomorrow’s screening, veteran Portuguese helmer De Oliveira returns with a modernday spin on a very old-school romance in Eccentricities of a Blonde-Haired Girl. Adapted from the short story of the same name by celebrated Portuguese writer Eca De Queiroz, it’s the
tale of an ill-fated romance between a young accountant and a mysterious woman he spies through his window. Playing on the idea that our traditional notions of romance are at loggerheads with the modern world, the film’s protagonist struggles to uphold the chivalry and politesse expected during a burgeoning relationship. Next up, is Leonel Viera’s The Forest (A Selva). Alberto is a young Portuguese monarchist who, in 1912, is exiled to Brazil. There, he is contracted by Velasco, a Spanish overseer, to work in the heart of the forest. Alberto discovers a strange and wild world, in which the Indians, the fever and the madness of the men are daily dangers. The penultimate screening is The Immortals (Os Imortais), a captivating suspense thriller by Vasconcelos. The story follows four former soldiers, who are ‘tired of the boredom of the country’, and of their lives, and so decide to rob a bank. The film is set in 1985, but Vasconcelos frequently uses ‘flashbacks’ to go back to the 1970s, during the colonial conflict in Africa, when the four men first met. Last but not least, next Thursday, you can watch Oliveira’s latest film, The Strange Case of Angelica, a radiant ghost story in which a dead newlywed comes to life before a camera lens. As the photographer hero grows obsessed with this spectral beauty, the film evolves into an enchanting tale of cinema itself, intimately concerned with the act of perception and the conjuring of alternative worlds.
Portuguese Cinema Week A series of Portuguese film screenings. Until November 15. Cine Studio (Intercollege), Nicosia. 9pm. In Portuguese with English subtitles. Tel: 96-420491

Ashley Wass plays a ‘Liszt’ of classics The Pharos Arts Foundation’s concert series presents performances of the highest calibre in the unique surroundings of the Shoe Factory in old Nicosia, and next week it will be no different as Pharos prepares to host a crowd favourite: Ashley Wass. Local music fans will be familiar with the pianist due to his long-standing participation in the Pharos Chamber Music Festival. Described by Gramophone Magazine as “a thoroughbred who possesses the enviable gift to turn almost anything he plays into pure gold”, Wass is recognised as one of the rising stars of his generation. His watershed moment came in 1997 when he won the World Piano Competition in London. He then went on to become the only British pianist to have reached the final of the Leeds Piano Competition in the last 20 years. Besides the exceedingly high quality of the performances that he has given ever since, what is most remarkable about Wass is the sheer number of critically acclaimed recordings of British music he has produced. The Naxos label went out of its way to make him its first exclusive artist in 2004. Since then, he has more than proved his worth, making a niche for himself in
the Anglo-French corner with prime recordings. A former BBC New Generation Artist, Wass has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and festivals, including the Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Vienna Konzerthaus and Carnegie Hall in New York. Furthermore, he has made several appearances at the BBC Proms and even appeared in a gala concert at Buckingham Palace to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee which was broadcast live around the world. As well as a solo performer, Ashley is much in demand as a chamber musician and has already collaborated with some of the leading artists of his generation. He began playing the piano at five, and studied music at Chethams Music School from age 11. In his teens he received a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music, where his teachers included Christopher Elton and Hamish Milne. Wass later also studied with Murray Perahia and in 2002 he was made an Associate of the Royal Academy. Wass loves to find new angles on repertoire, and though he has rapidly established a reputation as one of the great interpreters of British piano music of the
last century, his sympathies and enthusiasms are unusually wide-ranging and his formidable technique and imagination find a match in the kaleidoscopic evocations by Liszt. For Wednesday’s recital, he will present the seldomheard Liszt arrangement of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony. In December 1880, Liszt attended the Rome première of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony. Before the invention of sound recordings, piano versions of orchestral works offered the only way for many to discover the symphonic repertoire. Liszt first transcribed Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony for piano in 1838 and revised his score in the 1860s. The transcription, like Beethoven’s own 32 Variations in C minor of 1806, (which also features in Wass’ programme) evokes orchestral resonance from the keyboard, which will be brought to life by Wass. Also included in the programme is the Sonata by the great American composer Samuel Barber. Ashley Wass Pharos Arts Foundation hosts recital with acclaimed British pianist. November 14. The Shoe Factory, 304 Ermou Street, Nicosia. 8.30pm. €25/20. Tel: 22-663871/70-009304. www.pharosartsfoundation.org

P
OOR Kylie. There she is, elaborately gowned and extravagantly supported by an orchestra, topping the bill at an invitation-only event at Abbey Road Studios. It’s November 2011 and the Aussie songbird is giving a taster of an album marking her 25 years of making music. She has pulled out all the bells, whistles and string sections. But alas, on this night, Ms Minogue has been upstaged by another singer. Further down the bill there’s a mixed-race Scotswoman, living in a flat on Brick Lane, with a cockatoo shock of peroxide hair, and an elaborate tattoo of Frida Kahlo on her forearm. She also has an incredible voice: rich,
soulful, expressive. It is a proper star-is-born moment, and the studio - packed with music industry movers and shakers - erupts. Exactly one year later, I am watching Emeli Sandé wow another room. Over the past 12 months I’ve seen her triumph at the Brit Awards, dazzle Chris Martin as Coldplay’s support (“He said he really liked my song-writing, which coming from him is the biggest compliment ever”), silence the O2 and inspire a rowdy crowd in Glasgow, the city where she was once a student at the School of Medicine. She also appeared in both the opening and closing ceremonies at the Olympics, had a number one with Professor Green,
Read All About It, and her album has outsold Adele’s in the UK. Today the 25-year-old is at the Royal Albert Hall, teaching a songwriting masterclass to 30 secondary school kids. She tells them that she began playing the piano as a child growing up in the small town of Alford, Aberdeenshire; how her English mother (a council licensing standards officer) and Zambian father (a teacher) always encouraged her; and how she tried to secure a record deal from the age of 16. Recalling her efforts to make headway in the music industry, Sandé tells the rapt teenagers that “London to me was just this exciting place, but I’d no idea how I’d get there from

this tiny place really way north in Scotland”. Then, in response to the question “What does music mean to you?” her answer comes quickly. “Everything. It’s how I express myself. There’s a spiritual connection you’re feeling something higher.” Sensible, focused and ambitious, Sandé possesses an almost old-fashioned faith in the power of song. It’s an attitude that has helped rocket-power the career of the woman who, in 2009, in the fourth year of her studies, abandoned plans to be a doctor (her area of interest: clinical neuroscience) in favour of the dream of being a songwriter. Sandé won the Critics’ Choice at the Brit Awards in February 2012 and her debut album, Our Version of Events, released at the start of 2012, has sold more than 800,000 copies and is the nigh-impregnable bestselling album of the year. She’s also had tea with Prince Charles at Clarence House (he appointed her a Prince’s Trust ambassador). Oh, and she got married, in Montenegro. After the Olympics’ global-audience-of-one-billion high (more of which later), Sandé got away from it all, by marrying her Montenegrin fiancé Adam (the pair met as teenagers in Aberdeen), a marine biologist, in his homeland. She managed to fit in the wedding organisation by having nothing to do with it. “I gave it to Adam - he did everything. Literally. When I got there he was like, ‘Oh yeah, let me show you the venue…’
It wasn’t a church, it was just a place by the coast. And it was perfect. We got married at night and had a little honeymoon in Serbia. It was wonderful. A few Scots came from Glasgow. My friend Sam wore his kilt. He has such a strong Glaswegian accent, all the Montenegrins were like, ‘We thought we could understand English until he turned up…’” Were there any unusual Montenegrin wedding traditions? “People did bring money instead of gifts. But other than that it was really chilled out.” And that includes the

She’s not sure if she’s sold (m)any records in the Balkan state, “but they do call me The Montenegrin Daughter-In-Law,” she says with a laugh. She’ll now be known formally as Adele Emeli Gouraguine-Radojevic (no prizes for guessing why she chose to perform under her middle name). And she’ll have the Montenegrin pass-

port to prove it. Three days after her teaching stint at the Royal Albert Hall, Sandé is at the ITV Studios on the South Bank, preparing to record an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show. She’s singing ‘Wonder’, a new track written with her frequent collaborator Naughty Boy (aka Watford’s Shahid Khan). Over a hurried dinner (a bowl of tomato soup) in a tiny dressing room, she reflects on her giddy year. The Olympics was an obvious highlight, although nerves almost got the better of her during
bute to lost loved ones, , with only a heartbeat o accompany the singer her performance of ‘Abide With Me’ at the opening ceremony. “It was really good for my range,” she insists of the challenging hymn. “Because we did so many sessions rehearsing, getting it in the right key - but that key worked perfectly for me.” The performance, a tribute to lost loved ones, was largely unadorned, with only a heartbeat rhythm and a ‘drone’ to accompany the singer. “That was why I was so nervous before going out. The dress rehearsal
was in front of maybe 16,000 people - and that went awfully. So people could catch the Tube home, they told them to start leaving the stadium when my part was playing! And I’d walked up there, in the dress and the heels, and the mic didn’t work. Everyone was shouting, and I was getting so distracted, I forgot the whole arrangement… So that was in my head: if this happens on the night… Then, at the ceremony, right before they opened the door, I felt like I’d forgotten the whole tune. But it came back at the right moment,” she smiles. At the closing ceremony, too, she was picked by the BBC to sing John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ as a valedictory anthem. Why was she so ubiquitous - did Adele pull out? “Ha ha ha! I’m not sure. I was really surprised that the opening and closing ceremonies asked me. But they were things you just couldn’t say no to.” Other golden opportunities came from further afield. She spent time in New York co-writing three songs for Alicia Keys’ forthcoming album, and Beyoncé has recorded a track Sandé composed with Al Shux (who produced/co-wrote ‘Empire State of Mind’). Then there’s ‘Half of It’, a Sandé/Naughty Boy composition that caught the ear of Rihanna. “She heard it, loved it - got really emotional hearing it apparently. And then the next thing we know, they said she’s taken it and it’s supposedly on her new album.”
Sandé knows what a big song with a big artist can do for a writer. After Calvin Harris wrote ‘We Found Love’ for Rihanna, it topped the US charts for ten weeks, and fast-tracked the Scottish DJ/artist’s profile in America. For Sandé, who plans on devoting much of next year attempting to ‘crack’ the US, it’s exactly the start she needs. “As a writer, America is such a good place. Once you get access to one big star, because they’re all so connected - somebody works with this person, who works with that person - it’s a great way to get in. But you never know with such a big marquee artist,” she shrugs. “They say they’re gonna do it then it gets two months down the line and you never hear anything about it.” She’s speaking from experience. Leona Lewis’ current single ‘Trouble’ is also a Sandé/Naughty Boy composition. Lewis first said she wanted the song two years ago. Three days later I meet Mrs Gouraguine-Radojevic for the final time. Over the weekend, after The Jonathan Ross Show on the Saturday, she also performed on The X Factor with Labrinth - another co-writer, another hit. In the wake of the performance, the song ‘Beneath Your Beautiful’ shot from 88 to number one on

the iTunes chart. Today she’s at the Grosvenor House hotel for the Q Awards. She’s up for Best Solo Artist, against Noel Gallagher, Adele, Dizzee Rascal and Florence + The Machine. Of course, she wins, with her pal Professor Green presenting the gong. On Sandé’s current form, you wouldn’t bet against her sweeping next year’s Brits. She hangs out for a bit - a photo op with Dionne Warwick, another with Bobby Womack, some expressions

of gushy love from girl band Stooshe - before exiting into the late-afternoon gloom to start rehearsals for her UK tour. Anything else Sandé would like to declare before she goes? She thinks for a second. “Well, I found out recently that Prince has sampled my song ‘Maybe’ on a new song he’s written - he’s playing it on the Jimmy Kimmel show next week. And that’s just…” Emeli Sandé shakes her head. She is, genuinely, for once, speechless.

Television PICK OF THE DAY Middle Men (LTV, 23.00) Middle Men is set in 1995, when people’s online habits were not yet entrenched. There was big money to be made with the right computer program and in catering to people’s obsessions. Inspired by real people and events, Middle Men is a dark comedy about the origins of Internet porn and the sleazy types who trafficked in it. Think Boogie Nights meets Casino, though it’s not likely to make the lasting impression of either seminal film. As co-written and directed by George Gallo, this intriguing tale has an inherent morality, personified by Luke Wilson as Jack Harris, a family man who gets lured into this seamy world. Wilson gives a mature, subtle performance as the decent guy. He gets called in by Jerry, a shady lawyer (an excellent James Caan) to smooth things over when a pair of sleazeballs run afoul of a Russian mobster. It turns out these drug-addled lowlifes are educated former professionals. Buck (Gabriel Macht) was a rocket scientist for NASA, and Wayne (Giovanni Ribisi) was a veterinarian. As their drug use escalated, both lost their jobs and started Web-peddling smutty pictures from magazines. Soon, they cut in Nikita (Rade Serbedzija), the crime-boss owner of a Los Angeles strip club, and things get ugly. Having developed the first Internet billing service (Buck fiddles around and devises a program to proc-
ess credit card purchases), the raunchy duo quickly make millions. But their business sense is sorely lacking. When Jack is called in and finds a check for $2 million stuffed in a drawer, he senses an opportunity. Too upstanding to want his name sullied as a pornographer - he claims to live in a “Norman Rockwell world” - Jack helps the guys organise and grow their business and joins them as “middle men.” They don’t produce pornography, they just get a cut from every transaction made. But the richer Jack becomes, the more he loses touch with his family. Often, voice-over narration in movies can be off-putting or stilted. At best, it helps focus our collective lens on a complex world and make sense of things. Here it’s effective because Jack’s honest musings and lucid observations offer a navigational guide through this sordid world. But where the narrative style occasionally borders on glib, dialogue is ruefully funny. Caan has one of the best lines, delivered with world-weary sarcasm. When Wayne and Buck insist that underage girls on their site are “16 or 17, so it’s not kiddie porn,” he responds drily: “I’m not sure the government shares your sense of nuance.” This entertaining tale of sex, lies and the World Wide Web captures a distinctively seedy milieu, bringing to life the 90s Internet boom with wry humour. Made By Claudia Puig - USA TODAY in 2010.

St. Elmo’s Fire (LTV, 21.00) Emilio Estevez. Demi Moore. Rob Lowe. Judd Nelson. Andrew McCarthy. Ally Sheedy. Mare Winningham. I guess we should be grateful that they’re all alive and well 26 years later - but you have to say that fame has been fleeting for most of these Brat Pack actors (though Moore and Estevez did well), however fondly we 80s kids look back on them. “I can’t remember who met who fi rst, or who fell in love with who fi rst,” muses someone; “All I can remember is the seven of us always together”. They pal around after college graduation, think about the scary world of adulthood and hang around at St. Elmo’s Bar, where Emilio works as a waiter to make ends meet - but alas their friendship is skin-deep, and St. Elmo’s fi re isn’t even real fi re. Add a hit song and it’s easy to see why the fi lm was a hit back in the day. Made in 1985.
Abduction (Novacinema1, 22.10) “There’s a bomb in the oven.” That’s the point where this so-called thriller goes from really bad to actively ludicrous - the point where Nathan (Taylor Lautner, the wolf-boy from Twilight) fi nds out that his parents aren’t his real parents, just before the house gets invaded by mystery assailants. Nate can’t save his fake parents but he does kill the thugs, pumping one of them for information as he lies dying; “There’s a bomb in the oven,” gasps the thug - and so there is, its timer already ticking down to seven seconds, leaving Nate just enough time to jump in the pool before the house explodes around him. Why did the bad guys put the bomb in the oven? Why does the thug bother telling Nate, especially with only seven seconds on the clock? Above all, did no-one realise that the line “There’s a bomb in the oven” - spoken with much the same locutions as ‘There’s a cake in the oven’ - is secretly hilarious? Maybe they just didn’t care. Made in 2011.
The 13th Warrior (Antenna, 22.10) Things change. 13 years ago I thought it was silly that Antonio Banderas (as an exiled Arab among the Norsemen, sometime in the 10th century) learns the entire Norse language in a single night, just by sitting round the campfi re and listening really hard. Now I think it’s hilarious - and I’d probably like the fi lm more if I saw it again, with its cheesy plotting and big hairy guys swilling mead from animal horns, indulging in deeply unhygienic personal habits and laughing big, hearty Viking laughs in the face of Death. Antonio helps them fight savage cannibals known as ‘Eaters of the Dead’, and it’s all quite diverting for a Saturday night. Made in 1999.

ARIES March 21 - April 20
LEO July 23 - August 22
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21
Your focus is clear and your ambitions may be stronger than usual. But it might not be the best time to aim for the top job just yet, especially as someone may want to deprive you of it. Soon, you may be in a position to knock the spots off many of your competitors, and will be able to jump into the situation you have been hoping and waiting for.
Be enthusiastic and spread those amazing ideas around that you’ve been dreaming up. If the feedback on one of them isn’t up to the mark, you’ll find a way to cope. Romance wise there is a chance of meeting up with an ex or old flame. Mercury retrograde hints that you may have a lot to talk about, and most of it could be entirely positive.
You’ve probably been handling relationship issues quite well recently, and even if things have been bumpier, ongoing influences could well make up for it. Currently, you seem to be getting plenty of attention, with others only too keen to include you in their plans. However, today you gain a lot by relying on your own resourcefulness.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21
VIRGO August 23 - September 23
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20
Currently, the motives of friends and colleagues may be unclear. You might appreciate staying in the background, especially if someone seems to be on a power trip. It might be easier to spend time with quiet friends who you already get along with. However, with Venus currently encouraging you to indulge, a health plan could come under pressure.
Minor annoyances could be an issue early on, when some unexpected twists and turns could surface. Most of your problems could be more easily sorted out by making it crystal clear what you expect from others. Your social life may not be a major focus, and therefore may not have too much appeal. Staying in could prove to be more relaxing.
There is a chance you may encounter tension or indecision where your views are concerned. Try not to get too involved in other people’s thought processes or problems. Leave well alone as you have your own issues to sort out. With a focus on your social zone, those contacts with your colleagues are currently important and beneficial.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21
LIBRA September 24 - October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19
Take advantage of any career opportunities that come your way, although a tendency to act too quickly may not be wise. Before you make a move, think things through and listen to your intuition. If you get a good feeling, then go for it. It also helps to be careful when dealing with people today, as there is potential for arguments.
With the Moon in your sign, today could be a winner. But take time to clarify what you mean, especially in important meetings, or in the midst of a business discussion. A misunderstanding could unfortunately ruin all your hard work. A focus on your health zone suggests it may be a good time to go and see to that niggling complaint.
Give attention to your image, especially if dressing for success is important. This might be a good time to improve your looks and revamp your wardrobe. Be diplomatic, especially if money could become a bone of contention. Relationships can be harmonious, particularly if you avoid bringing up things that are probably best left in the past.
CANCER June 22 - July 22
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22
PISCES February 20 - March 20
If the right words seem to escape you, try to saying nothing for a while. Sometimes your silence says more than any number of words. Some frustrations here and there won’t be enough to ruin your day, especially when your optimistic attitude encourages a warm and friendly atmosphere. Yet you may find yourself arranging a lunch or dinner party.
Changes may be on the agenda, but it’s how you choose to respond to them that will make all the difference. Although you may want to move ahead, you might first need to confront certain limitations that have been holding you back for some time. This may not be easy with Saturn now hovering in your sign, but this can also double your resolve.
You may be feeling restless or slightly unsettled. If that is the case, try not to be held in the sway of your emotions and let them guide your actions. So, try not to do anything on the spur of the moment if you can help it. Sometimes it’s okay not to take the initiative and to go with the flow. Yet, do be open to any help that might be offered.

Sport Amla and Kallis star as S. Africa dominate Aussies
IN BRIEF Djokovic eliminates Berdych
Proteas’ No.1 Test ranking is on the line By Nick Mulvenney HASHIM Amla was approaching his third century in his last four Tests as South Africa defused Australia’s pace attack and reached a dominant 255 for two at the end of the opening day of the first Test at the Gabba yesterday. Amla, who was 90 not out when the stumps were drawn early because of bad light, put on 136 in an unbeaten third wicket stand with Jacques Kallis (84 not out) after openers Graeme Smith (10) and Alviro Petersen (64) were dismissed either side of the lunch break. Australian seamer Peter Siddle was left rueing missed chances after his no ball gave Kallis a life on 43 and he dropped a catch off his own bowling that would have sent Amla back to the dressing room with 74 runs. The home side had hoped the bowling attack which destroyed India’s vaunted batsmen last year would do the same with the South Africans but the fireworks from James Pattinson, Ben Hilfenhaus and Siddle failed to materialise. “We wanted to really put
our peg in the ground and I think we did that really well,” said Petersen. Amla, the world’s topranked batsman, signalled his intent early in the day with a soaring six off spinner Nathan Lyon and coolly paced his innings, easing up when the quicks got into their stride and opening up against anything loose. The 29-year-old put on 90 for the second wicket with Petersen before the opener threw away his wicket by wafting a shot for Mike Hussey to catch at mid-on off Lyon’s bowling halfway through the second session. Picking up his 5,000th Test run along the way, Amla reached his 24th Test half century before tea and, Siddle’s dropped catch apart, it looked like only the gathering clouds would stop him reaching his 17th Test century. The evergreen Kallis had designs on the milestone himself after racing to his 56th Test half century in just 63 balls, reaching the mark with a sublime cover drive. The all rounder rode his luck, though, when he ballooned a catch to Lyon only for the umpire to call him back to the crease after TV replays showed Siddle had
failed to keep his front foot behind the line. Australia had earlier benefited from the TV appeal system to dismiss Smith lbw when a Pattinson delivery caught the South African skipper’s trailing leg but umpire Billy Bowden declined to raise his characteristic crooked finger. South Africa won the toss and chose to bat, which looked like a good decision after the wicket and overcast conditions failed to produce the sort of swing and movement off the pitch the seamers had hoped for. Whether South Africa’s other big decision of the morning - to drop spinner Imran Tahir and give a debut to Rory Kleinveldt as part of a four-pronged pace attack - proves a good one was put into doubt when JP Duminy was injured after close of play. Duminy, who was expected to support the pacemen with his off spin, hurt his left ankle in a fall while training on the pitch and had to be helped off before being taken to hospital for a scan. South Africa’s number one Test ranking is on the line in the series, which continues with matches in Adelaide and Perth after Brisbane.

Unusual journey completes Youngs’ family hat-trick By Mitch Phillips
Ben Youngs has transformed from a back into a hooker
WITH two England scrumhalves in the family Tom Youngs was poised for a lifetime of ribbing when he struggled as a Leicester reserve centre but today, three years after a radical switch to hooker, he will complete the hat-trick against Fiji. Brother Ben, two years younger at 23, will be on the bench having missed out this time to Danny Care for the number nine shirt while father Nick, who won six caps in the early 1980s, will be the proudest man in the Twickenham stands. Despite winning age group caps for England as a back, Youngs was persuaded to have a go at transforming himself into a hooker by former Leicester coach Heyneke Meyer in 2009. After a torrid first few months where he worked hard to bulk up but found himself regularly slaugh-
tered by experienced rivals, a talented front rower began to emerge. He had a baptism of fire playing on loan for Nottingham against his former club, with a formidable all-international front row of Martin Castrogiovanni, Mefin Davies and Marcos Ayerza. “I took painkillers for the rest of the week. I was in agony,” he said this week as he prepared for his first taste of full international rugby. “But I got better and better and got used to it.” On his return to Leicester Youngs was helped by the presence of the club’s head coach and former England hooker Richard Cockerill and he secured the starting jersey. He travelled with England to South Africa this year, featuring in the midweek games and now, in the injury absence of Dylan Hartley, Rob Webber and Joe Gray, has been given his chance despite starting only a hand-
ful of Premiership games. “When I got asked to move to hooker it was little goals at a time,” Youngs said after going through his paces at England’s training base in Surrey yesterday. “It was about building at Nottingham trying to get back to Leicester but the ultimate goal was always England. “My family are over the moon for me. They know how hard I’ve worked for this and it’s great that my brother will hopefully get out there on the pitch with me and it will be a fantastic day for the family.” Coach Stuart Lancaster said he had no doubts about Youngs’ ability to continue to develop. “There are not many centres who transfer to hooker,” he told reporters. “I’ve known back rowers do it and props go to hooker but centre to hooker...that takes resilience and real mental toughness.”
NOVAK Djokovic completed a 100 per cent round-robin record at the ATP World Tour Finals with a 6-2 7-6 defeat of Czech Tomas Berdych yesterday, booking his place in the semi-finals. The Serb turned in a clinical performance before a 17,000 sell-out crowd at the O2 Arena, guaranteeing top spot in Group A. Berdych, who led 6-3 in the second set tiebreak, is eliminated. Djokovic dominated the opening set against an opponent he had beaten in 10 of their previous 11 meetings, breaking serve twice. He also broke early in the second set, but Berdych hit back, then pushed the Serb all the way thereafter. The Czech suddenly began to force his opponent out of position with some ferocious baseline hitting. Djokovic was made to sweat to hold serve at 5-6 and when Berdych thundered down an ace to earn three set points in the tiebreak, a decider looked imminent. The Serb then won the next two points before benefitting from a Berdych error to level it at 6-6. Djokovic completed victory on his first match point when his opponent ballooned a forehand long after one hour 37 minutes. US Open champion Andy Murray took on France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga late last night. Roger Federer has already reached the semifinals from Group B.
Sick McIlroy is struggling THREE rain delays are not the only thing world number one Rory McIlroy has had to contend with at the Barclays Singapore Open so far this week. The Northern Ireland star, who this time last year had a bout of suspected Dengue fever, admits he is under the weather again after going down with what he described as “a cold or a sinus infection”. McIlroy, close to clinching the double of European and US Tour money list titles, is one under par and five off the lead after 12 holes of his second round in an event which may be cut to 54 holes if there are any more hold-ups. “I’m struggling a bit and not feeling 100 per cent,” he said. England’s Simon Dyson, a four-time winner in Asia, and Thai golfer Chapchai Nirat top the leaderboard at six under par.

All about winning for Mourinho amid academy argument
Montpellier bid to refocus after European frustration
Concern over lack of home-grown players
DEFENDING champions Montpellier hope to put their disappointing Champions League campaign behind them when they return to domestic action at home to leaders Paris St Germain tomorrow. Montpellier were eliminated from Europe’s flagship competition after their 3-1 loss at Greek side Olympiakos on Tuesday left them bottom of the group B with one point from four games. The Southern side, who claimed their maiden French title last May, have also endured a miserable start to the defence of their Ligue 1 crown and lie 14th in the table on 12 points, ten adrift of PSG. “We now have to clear our minds and move on,” coach Rene Girard told reporters. “It is not that bad to immediately face a big club. It will not be hard to find the motivation and it will help us move past the disappointment.” Lille, Ligue 1 champions in 2011, were also dumped out the Champions League, after being thrashed 6-1 by Bayern Munich, leaving PSG as the only French side on course to reach the last 16. The Ligue 1 leaders have been relying heavily on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but will be deprived of the forward’s services on Sunday as he begins a two-game suspension after being sent off for a kung-fu style challenge last weekend. The Swede has scored 10 out PSG’s 17 league goals so far and shone in a playmaker role against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday, setting up all the goals in a 4-0 win. Girard was disappointed that Ibrahimovic would not feature in the match. “It may be surprising for you but I wished he had been there,” the Montpellier coach said. “A long-haired tough guy, I think that everyone would have liked to watch him.” Lille, who are currently eighth, will also have a chance to bounce back at home today against midtable Stade Brest. “We have to separate the competitions,” coach Rudi Garcia said after his side were embarrassed in Munich. “Let’s go back to the league in which we are having a good time,” he added, referring to his team’s four-game unbeaten run. Second-placed Marseille, tied on points with PSG, face Nice at home on Sunday. Centre back Souleymane Diawara said Marseille could fight for the title this season. “The boys surprised me. Anyone who said we would have 22 points from 10 games would have been called a fool,” he told L’Equipe. “This team can do very, very well.”
By Iain Rogers REAL Madrid hired Jose Mourinho because he gets results and gets them quickly but the Portuguese has been forced to explain in recent weeks why he doesn’t give more opportunities to graduates from the club’s academy. Mourinho, whose expensively assembled side play at Levante in La Liga tomorrow, has responded to the criticism by pointing out that it is useless to promote academy graduates if buying in players is more effective over the short term. He has little sympathy with romantics who would like to see more home-grown players on the pitch alongside captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas and fullback Alvaro Arbeloa, currently the only regular starters from the club’s academy, even though Arbeloa’s skills were honed by a spell at Liverpool. The controversy highlights a major difference between Real and arch-rivals Barcelona, whose own youth school continues to feed the first team squad after producing the likes of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique in recent years. Real have seen some of their brightest prospects, including Juan Mata, Roberto Soldado and Alvaro Negredo, move on to seek more playing time elsewhere. “For me, the most impor-
tant thing is to win and it seems to me that goes for the Madrid fans as well,” Mourinho told a news conference. The Portuguese went on to note that the teams for Real’s three most-recent Champions League triumphs contained two academy graduates in 1998, two in 2000 and only one in 2002. Real’s big-spending president Florentino Perez has repeatedly insisted the club’s academy is a priority and says he wants to see a mixture of homegrown players and outside talent in the squad. Presiding over the opening of a new residence for youth recruits at the Valdebebas training ground on Monday, the construction magnate did not address the debate over Mourinho’s policies but his obsession with winning a 10th European crown means he is likely to back the Portuguese whatever tactics he decides to deploy. The former Chelsea manager has indicated he would like to coach in England again when his work at Real is done and quickly delivering another European title and burnishing his own CV in the process will take precedence over nurturing players from the B team. Arbeloa, who has become a fixture in the team after returning from England, backed his coach after Tuesday’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Borussia Dortmund.
“At Real Madrid the most important thing is to win,” the Spain international told reporters. “The fans want to see academy graduates but they have to be good enough,” he added. “The Real Madrid players are the best in the world and that means the youth players have to be as good as a Mesut Ozil, a Pepe or a Cristiano Ronaldo. “Madrid fans want their team to be up there fighting and it’s not enough to use 10 academy players and finish third.” La Liga leaders Barca will have a team full of home talent when they travel to play Real Mallorca on Sunday after suffering only their second defeat in all competitions this season on Wednesday. Tito Vilanova’s side, who are three points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid with Real five further back in third, fell 2-1 at Celtic in Champions League Group G, a result which sparked wild celebrations in Glasgow. Despite the surprise reverse, there was some good news for Vilanova, who has been hit recently with a series of injuries to defenders, when centre back Gerard Pique came on as a substitute after recovering from a foot injury. Atletico, who continued the defence of their Europa League title at Academica on Thursday, are at home to city rivals Getafe on Sunday.

Erratic Lazio and Roma promise Serie A goal feast By Brian Homewood
Unpredictable: Roma have the best scoring and secondworst defensive record in the Italian league
SUNDAY’S Rome derby brings Serie A’s two most erratic teams face to face in a match which promises a goal feast. Roma won their last game 4-1 against Palermo while Lazio, whose coach Vladimir Petkovic will be experiencing the fixture for the first time, were thumped 4-0 by Catania. However, Lazio have shown that they are just as capable of winning handsomely and Roma are equally prone to calamitous defeats. To further spice up the encounter, the teams are next to each other in the table, Lazio lying fifth with 19 points from 11 games and Roma one place below on 17. The return of Zdenek Zeman, a coach whose philosophy has always been based on bold and, some feel, reckless attack, has been one of the talking points for the Se-
rie A season. Under Zeman’s second stint at the club, Roma have the best scoring and secondworst defensive record in the league. They twice lost 3-2 at home after squandering twogoal leads and won 4-2 away after overturning a three-goal deficit. Czech-born coach Zeman does not back down from confrontation and the latest victim is midfielder Daniele De Rossi, who has started only six Serie A games and has been linked in Italian media with a move away from the club. Their one consistently good performer has been Argentine midfielder Erik Lamela who has seven goals to his credit. Lazio have faded after a good start in which they won their first three games and Petkovic admitted they may have been thinking of the derby when they collapsed at Catania last Sunday. Leaders and champions
Juventus, whose 49-match unbeaten run was ended by Inter Milan last week, visit promoted Pescara, the team Zeman led out of Serie B last season, in what should be a stern test of their title credentials today. Inter, who have closed the gap to one point, visit midtable Atalanta on Sunday but have defensive worries with Andrea Ranocchi and Walter Samuel both injured. The other highlight is AC Milan’s match at home to fourth-placed Fiorentina, whose revitalised team has been the revelation of the championship. After a terrible start, Milan have shown signs of life by taking seven points from their last nine but produced another disjointed performance in the Champions League on Tuesday when they were held 1-1 at home by Malaga. Even so, it was a fourth match without defeat which has lifted the pressure on coach Massimiliano Allegri.

Liverpool, Atletico suffer surprise defeats, Defoe hits a hat-trick Muamba returns to the scene of his near fatal collapse
By Nemanja Bjedov
By Zoran Milosavljevic INTER Milan and Bayer Leverkusen cruised into the Europa League knockout stage with emphatic wins on Thursday but holders Atletico Madrid and former winners Liverpool suffered surprise defeats. Russia’s Rubin Kazan, Lyon, Hanover and Metalist Kharkiv joined Bayer and treble UEFA Cup winners Inter in sealing their progress to the last 32 with two games to spare. Atletico Madrid’s 16-match unbeaten run came to an end at Portugal’s Academica, 2-0 winners thanks to a brace from Wilson Eduardo, while Ivorian striker Lacina Traore fired Russia’s Anzhi Makhachkala to a 1-0 win over Liverpool in Moscow. There was also a brilliant individual performance from Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, who scored four goals as the 1989 winners twice fought back from a goal down to beat Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 4-2 and stay in the hunt. Inter breezed past Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade 3-1 in Serbia as Argentine forward Rodrigo Palacio came off the bench after a goalless first half and sent the Serie A side on their way with a brace. AEL shift focus to AEK after Europa League loss
Spurs striker Jermain Defoe boosted his side’s qualification hopes with a brilliant performance against Maribor third before Nemanja Tomic scored Partizan’s first goal in the competition, which came as scant consolation after they suffered a fourth successive defeat and stretched their winless streak against Italian opposition to 24 years. Inter coach Andrea Stramaccioni, who rested the bulk of his first-choice players who engineered a 3-1 win at Italian champions Juventus last Saturday, praised livewire Palacio after he silenced the noisy but well-behaved 25,000 home crowd. “Palacio a very important player for us, he has very good skills because he is a versatile forward who can
play in several positions and has an eye for goal,” Stramaccioni said. “We have continued our winning streak and this will give us the confidence we need to maintain our challenge for the Italian League title, starting with a difficult away game against Atalanta,” he added. Rubin booked their ticket with a 1-0 win at Azeri champions Neftchi Baku, while Bayer thrashed Rapid Vienna 3-0 and Metalist beat Rosenborg 3-1 to advance from Group K. Lyon ensured their survival through the winter break with a 3-2 win at last season’s runners-up Athletic Bilbao, who are out of the reckon-
ing with just one point from four games, while Hannover edged Swedes Helsinborg at home by the same score thanks to an injury-time Szabolcs Huszti penalty. Tottenham, who won the UEFA Cup in 1972 and 1984, kept alive their hopes of progressing with Jermain Defoe scoring a hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Slovenia’s NK Maribor. Former Bolton Wanderers player Fabrice Muamba walked on at halftime to salute the crowd in an emotional return for a player who nearly died at White Hart Lane in March when he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch. With tears streaming down
his face, he pointed to where he fell and then addressed the fans, who gave him a standing ovation. Lazio top Group J with eight points after thrashing Panathinaikos 3-0, while Tottenham are second on six and Maribor slipped one place down to third on four points. Swedish club AIK beat PSV Eindhoven in Stockholm thanks to a first-half wonder goal from on-loan Celtic striker Mohamed Bangura. “If you’re going to win these games, you have to score great goals. Mohamed scored a fantastic goal. A brilliant achievement,” AIK coach Andreas Alm told Sweden’s TV4 Sport.
Platt defends Mancini actions By Andy Hampson
Frustrated: Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini
MANCHESTER City manager Roberto Mancini was simply wearing “his heart on his sleeve” during his midweek outburst, according to his number two David Platt. Mancini angrily confronted referee Peter Rasmussen after a controversial end to his side’s vital Champions League clash with Ajax at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday. The Italian also clashed with a cameraman after walking across the pitch to meet the official, who disallowed a late City goal and declined an injury-time penalty appeal. Mancini later said he had told the cameraman to stop filming. There were fears the City boss could incur a touchline ban for his actions but neither Rasmussen nor the match delegate reported the incidents to European governing body UEFA. First-team coach Platt said: “I don’t think he is the first manager to go onto the pitch. “If you go on to Wikipedia you’ll see he has done it before, not just as a manager but as a player. He wears his heart on his sleeve.” Sergio Aguero thought he had won the game when he turned the ball home in the
88th minute but an offside flag had already been raised against Aleksandar Kolarov. Mario Balotelli then appealed for a late penalty for a shirt pull but the Danish referee blew the final whistle. Defending Mancini further, Platt said: “Why wouldn’t the manager of a football club be frustrated? Why wouldn’t we all be frustrated?” The matter sparked further scrutiny of Mancini’s position after a number of reports speculating about his future in recent weeks. Just a day previously, the former Inter Milan boss had lost his temper when asked by the press for clarification on his previous statement that he had been “close to seven or eight teams” last season. That in turn had come about following reports he held discussions with Monaco last season. Platt was speaking after Mancini chose not to attend City’s latest press conference yesterday, to preview Sunday’s Barclays Premier League game against Tottenham. When asked why the manager was not present, Platt said: “Because I’ve been asked to come. “He has got a couple of things he needs to do. He is fine, why wouldn’t he be?”
CYPTIOT champions AEL have no time to dwell on a 2-0 Europa League defeat against Turkish side Fenerbahce on Thursday as they face a tough test against AEK Larnaca in the national championship this weekend. “We played well and had some really good chances to score. We had nothing to lose and I believe we represented Cypriot football in the right way,” said AEL coach Jorge Costa, whose side had two great chances to break the deadlock within the first five minutes of the match in Istanbul, but saw experienced striker Michalis Konstantinou fail to convert either of them. “Their first goal came after a corner kick and a deflection which was very unfortunate for us. However, it is not an excuse, but we also missed many regulars as I had only 18 players who travelled to Turkey out of which both Christos Theophilou and Marco Airosa could not play due to injuries. “We want to be better than we are at the moment, because we aim high in our national championship which is our primary goal,” Costa concluded. AEL return to domestic matters tomorrow afternoon at 6pm when they face the only team yet to concede a goal this season in AEK at the GSZ Stadium in Larnaca. Elsewhere, league leaders APOEL visit Ethnikos Achnas this afternoon at 6pm with their coach Ivan Jovanovic calling on his players to be wary of the threat posed by Ethnikos: “This is a very important match for us, especially because we play it in Achna. Playing against Ethnikos is always difficult, regardless if we play home or away. We must be cautious because they have performed a lot better than their results have shown. “We will approach the match very seriously, not because we are preparing for some upcoming highprofile matches, but because we truly respect our opponents. The matches you are expected to win are usually the most difficult ones,” added Jovanovic whose side are due to face AEK, AEL and Anorthosis in three of their next four league matches. Elsewhere this afternoon, Nea Salamina host Enosis Neon Paralimni in the Round 9 opener with the kick-off scheduled for 5pm, while an hour later Apollon take on AEP Paphos at the Tsirion Stadium in Limassol and Olympiakos face Doxa Katokopia in Nicosia. Tomorrow afternoon at 5pm, Anorthosis make the short trip to Ayia Napa, while at 6pm Omonia host Alki at the GSP Stadium in the capital Nicosia.

Sport McLaren: Hamilton has regrets over Mercedes move By Ian Parkes MCLAREN team principal Martin Whitmarsh believes Lewis Hamilton has already experienced regrets over his move to Mercedes. Whitmarsh concedes he still does “not fully understand” why Hamilton opted to quit McLaren after 14 years and join Mercedes, who have won just one race in three years since their return to Formula One. Whitmarsh can appreciate Hamilton’s desire “to flee the nest” but remains disappointed by his decision, in particular as he feels it was made after a bad result in Singapore. That was a race Hamilton should have won to firmly thrust himself back into the title picture, only to retire on lap 23 with a gearbox failure. “It is always bad to make a decision in the aftermath of a bad race,” Whitmarsh told the official F1 website. “He was pretty sure he was going to win that race and it (the retirement) was a disappointment. “I respect his decision, but I believe he would be better off with us; we are the stronger team and we intend to beat him next year.” Since Hamilton announced he was off to join Mercedes on a £45 million three-year contract, the Brackleybased outfit have failed to score a single point. McLaren have hardly set the world on fire either, although Hamilton should have won in Abu Dhabi on Sunday only to suffer another mechanical issue while leading from pole position. Asked whether Hamilton already regretted his decision, Whitmarsh added: “I think he has on occasions, yes. “Probably, when you make a decision you have to tell yourself that the decision is made so you have to look forward. “You say ‘Okay, that it is in the past’, so you don’t spend too much time thinking
about why. You just look forward and make the best out of the new situation. “You have to justify your decision. He is not going to say ‘Hey, they offered me more money’. “He is also not going to say he’s made an awful mistake. I hope he thinks today he’s made an awful mistake and I hope he thinks that next year. “He’s made that decision and he has to live with that decision.” Despite such comments, Whitmarsh knows the end of the final race in Brazil in just over a fortnight’s time will be highly emotional. “Right now we still want to win races. We are motivated by that and our conversation circles around that,” he added. “Maybe he is completely dispassionate about it, but my guess is we both will have very emotional moments in Brazil. “I have known him since he was 11 and worked with him since his teens and I know we will both be very emotional after Brazil. “We have had one or two emotional moments since the decision was taken and I believe, but you must ask him, that we have a very good relationship.” Whitmarsh this week also recognised that McLaren do not know just how good new Mexican signing Sergio Perez really is. The 22-year-old has failed to score a point in the four races since he was announced in September as successor to 2008 champion Hamilton. Before the announcement, Perez had chalked up three podium finishes with Sauber. “I think he’s got a lot of talent but if I’m honest, I don’t know,” Whitmarsh told reporters when asked about his new signing’s potential. “We wouldn’t have signed him unless we thought that he could go to another level, but we don’t know,” he added.

BOTH SIDES RELISHING THE CHANCE TO BEAT THEIR BITTER RIVALS
Last season’s more memorable clashes came in the FA Cup final where Chelsea won 2-1, and then in the league three days later at Anfield where a 4-1 defeat consigned Chelsea to their first finish outside the top four since 2002
Chelsea and Liverpool have a point to prove By Alison Wildey

HELSEA against Liverpool is one of the Premier League’s more modern rivalries but the teams, who have clashed over 30 times since the start of the 2004/05 season, meet at Stamford Bridge tomorrow (6pm) each with a point to prove. After enduring their worst start to the league for 101 years, Liverpool - mired in mid-table with 11 points from 10 matches and just two wins - would relish the chance to get one over on the capital side. Chelsea, who lost top spot to Manchester United last weekend, will be hoping the return to league action of captain John Terry following a four-match ban for racially abusing Queens Park Rangers’ Anton Ferdinand, will plug the London team’s leaky defence. Last season’s more memorable clashes came in the FA Cup final where Chelsea survived a late fightback to win 2-1, and then in the league three days later at Anfield where a 4-1 defeat consigned Chelsea to their first finish outside the top four since the 2001-02 season. Liverpool manager Brendan
‘Liverpool have endured their worst league start in 101 years’ Rodgers made it clear where his priorities lay this week by leaving several first-team players, including skipper Steven Gerrard and top scorer Luis Suarez out of the squad for Thursday’s 1-0 Europa League defeat in Russia against Anzhi Makhachkala. Rodgers has conceded the club need to strengthen the squad in the January transfer window but defender Jose Enrique believes Liverpool, who drew 1-1 at home to Newcastle last weekend, are showing improved form. “We’re doing well in training everyday, which people don’t get to see, and we take that momentum into games,” Enrique told the Daily Mirror. “We’re improving a lot under Brendan Rodgers. I’m improving a lot under him. We have to keep going and the results will come.” Premier League leaders Manchester United travel to Aston Villa today (7.30pm) and a victory could put them four points clear of Chelsea,
albeit temporarily. Champions Manchester City, whose 2-2 draw with Ajax in midweek all but ended their chances of making the Champions League knockout stage, host Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow (3.30pm). Bottom side Southampton take on Swansea City with speculation mounting over the future of manager Nigel Adkins at the South Coast club. Earlier this week, Adkins conceded he was favourite to become the first Premier League managerial casualty of the season. “Someone is always going to be the favourite to be sacked. If you’re bottom of the league, you should be the favourite probably,” he said. Southampton’s only Premier League win so far was against Aston Villa in September and they are bottom on four points. Ahead of their 5pm clash this afternoon, Fulham boss
Martin Jol has warned Arsenal fans they are likely to be disappointed if they expect their team to be challenging for titles. The Gunners have not won a major trophy since they lifted the FA Cup in 2005 and they are already drifting out of the Premier League title race as they prepare to face Jol’s side at the Emirates. The former Tottenham boss said: “Seven years without a trophy? That’s a long time. It’s probably not what an Arsenal fan wants. “Can you expect a team like Arsenal to win things with Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, all these clubs? “If you look at the likes of Man City with almost half a billion spent and Man United, it’s not easy nowadays. “Wenger created the new Arsenal. Maybe in three years’ time they will hope and pray to get someone like him. I don’t think fans have to be angry. Frustrated is a better word.”
