The rocket attacks were a challenge to Israel’s Gaza offensive and came just hours after Egypt’s prime minister, denouncing what he described as Israeli aggression, visited the enclave and said Cairo was prepared to mediate. Israel’s armed forces announced that a highway leading to the Gaza Strip and two roads bordering the enclave would be offlimits to civilian traffic until further notice. Tanks and self-propelled guns were seen near the border area yesterday, and the military said it had already called 16,000 reservists to active duty. A quota of 30,000 reservists had been set earlier. Israel began bombing Gaza on Wednesday with an attack that killed the Hamas military chief. It says its campaign is in response to Hamas missiles fired on its territory. Hamas stepped up rocket attacks in response. Israeli police said a rocket fired from Gaza landed in the Jerusalem area, outside the city, yesterday. Private David Lee Collins, 18, was stabbed to death in the early hours of November 4 after a confrontation over Collins’ home town, Manchester and rival city of London. Collins was stationed with the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers at Dhekelia garrison. A post mortem said that he died from a “ruptured heart caused by a

sharp instrument”. Police found a switchblade at the scene, and 11 similar knives, a knuckleduster and cannabis at the trio’s hotel room. Up to one in three teenagers smoke Fresh anti-smoking campaign targets youth and drivers By Poly Pantelides WITH THE latest statistics showing that up to one in three secondary school students in Cyprus are smokers, the health ministry and the police are launching an anti-smoking campaign. “Smoking is the only cause of death that is preventable in the world today. It kills six million people a year, 600,000 of which have only been exposed to passive smoking. Unless urgent action is taken, tobacco will kill more than one billion people this century,” said health minister Androulla Agrotou. She was speaking at a news conference to present the police’s anti-smoking campaign plans. Part of the campaign will focus on drivers and smoking in the car and will start on Sunday and last a week. Police ofﬁcers will distribute ﬂyers to

drivers to inform them of the law. It is illegal to smoke in any vehicles carrying anyone aged 16 or younger. Offenders are punishable with a fine up to €1,700 and/or up to six months’ imprisonment. Passive smoking in cars is 23 times more harmful than it would be in a smoking area, but the public needs to become aware of the health risks of smoking in cars, Agrotou said. So the police will intensify checks, reporting and fining law breakers, police spokesman Andreas Angelides said yesterday. But despite previous and ongoing anti-smoking campaigns, schoolchildren continue to smoke. Academic at the Cyprus University of Technology, Costas Christofi, presented a recent study that collected questionnaires from 1,318 secondary school students. In lyceums, 32 per cent of

students consume tobacco products including shishas, and in gymnasiums some 17 per cent do, Christoﬁ said. Cabinet has approved an anti-smoking policy created by an inter-departmental team following guidelines from World Health Organisation and the European Union. The policy aims to prevent children and youth from starting to smoke so they do not develop an addiction, to help smokers quit and to promote a smoke-free environment through legislative and other measures, Agrotou said. She said the ministry was in the process of appointing a national committee to implement and supervise related activities. In the meantime, police report a drop of 29 per cent in charges related to smoking in cars with minors, something they attributed yesterday to the public learning to follow the law.

Government firm over SGOs Post-bailout debt could be sustainable at 120 per cent of GDP By George Psyllides CYPRIOT debt could be sustainable after a bailout, reports suggested yesterday, as the government said there was still disagreement with international lenders on certain matters, including the proposal to privatise proﬁtable semi-government organisations (SGOs). The size of the potential bailout - the bulk of it for banks - will probably determine how strict the island’s adjustment programme would be. “An unsustainable debt has other conditions,” government spokes-

man Stefanos Stefanou said. Included in those conditions is the privatisation of proﬁtable SGOs like the telecommunications company CyTA. The lenders - European Commission, IMF, European Central Bank - have so far insisted that Cyprus’ debt would be unsustainable after the bailout. The government disagrees. Preliminary results of an audit into the banks’ loan portfolios are not expected before December but some ﬁgures provided by the company undertaking the task appear to indicate that the debt would be sustainable - after the bailout - at around 120 per cent of GDP, the Cyprus News Agency reported.

But reports said lenders still insist on privatisation, even with the debt at 120 per cent. Cyprus has said it will not sell profitable SGOs, a position reiterated by Stefanou yesterday. “We are very determined on issues of privatising profitable SGOs,” he said. He also rejected criticism that the government was stalling, challenging the opposition to say whether it wanted a memorandum that did not meet the conditions all political parties and the government have set together. President Demetris Christofias has been accused of trying to stall in a bid not to be the one signing the bailout agreement.

“We should all make up our minds,” the spokesman said. Cyprus has said it wants the eurozone’s European Stability Mechanism (ESM) bailout fund to recapitalise the banks directly, but heavyweights in the bloc disagree with the ESM undertaking legacy debt. The island is already staring at a public debt which catapulted from 71 per cent in 2011 to about 90 per cent this year after coming to the aid of its second largest bank, Popular. Daily newspaper Politis reported yesterday that the government was still trying to secure a loan of about €4 billion to last it until banks can receive assistance from

the ESM directly in about a year. However, the protracted uncertainty is taking its toll on the economy, with observers pointing out that the longer it takes for a bailout deal, the greater the damage. Central Bank Governor Panicos Demetriades stressed the urgency of the situation in a meeting on Thursday of the island’s negotiating team, according to Phileleftheros. Cyprus’ top banker tried to make it clear that there was no other solution but to sign the bailout as soon as possible so that banks receive the necessary capital and in turn start supporting the economy.

Former minister enters presidential race on ‘prospect of hope’ platform By George Psyllides FORMER trade minister Praxoulla Antoniadou yesterday announced she would be running for president in next year’s elections, saying none of the other candidates could offer any prospect of hope for the country. Antoniadou, who heads the United Democrats, said times are so tough that “we would be unworthy of being called a political party if we did not state our presence with our proposals … especially since we assessed that none of the other candidates offer any prospect of hope for the country.” The former minister, unceremoniously removed from ofﬁce in a cabinet reshufﬂe last March, suggested that the dead-end currently faced by the economy was worse than the aftermath of the 1974 Turkish invasion. “Unemployment has

reached unprecedented levels, to an extent that a real social tragedy has been created,” she said. Whereas in the past, children returning from their studies were supported by their parents until they found a job, now the mother and father are also unemployed. “They are all in despair,” Antoniadou said. She blamed the former Central Bank governor Athanasios Orfanides’ “unwise monetary and regulatory policy” for the banks’ expansion to Greece that ultimately became their downfall. But the government was also to blame for the economic woes faced by the island, Antoniadou added. “While they had early warning … they did nothing to prevent what they could,” she said. “Unfortunately we are on the brink of bankruptcy due to greed and

Cyprus prepared for Syrian crisis Experience of Lebanon can be put to good use By Peter Stevenson CYPRUS is well prepared for any influx of Syrian refugees fleeing the on-going civil war, the European Commissioner for humanitarian aid and crisis response, Kristalina Georgieva, said yesterday. “The conflict in Syria is top of my concerns because of the sheer magnitude and because there is no political solution in sight,” said the commissioner who was in Cyprus this week to discuss likely responses to the potential humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. Although the commission’s immediate concern is for the people inside Syria and the adjacent countries, Georgieva did address concerns that some refugees might make their way to Cyprus. “The island is the closest European port to Syria, a mere 110km away so it is imperative that a plan is put in place,” she added. Interior ministers of Europe are discussing how to deal with an influx of Syrian refugees to European countries such as Cyprus, Greece and even to Georgieva’s home nation of Bulgaria. Germany and Sweden have pledged to take 5,000 and 2,500 Syrian refugees respectively to help with the outflow of people. “Cyprus is at the forefront of preparedness,” Georgieva explained. Following the civil war in Lebanon from 1975 to 1990 and the more recent IsraeliLebanon conflict of 2006, she said “Cyprus has full awareness and historical experience”. Dark side to the growing popularity of pro futsal By Peter Stevenson TWO players from AEL’s futsal team were injured by APOEL fans after their match at the Melkonian stadium in Nicosia on Thursday night. “In spite of warnings by the police that the (Melkonian) stadium was unfit to stage the game and there would be no police presence, the game went ahead resulting in incidents and some damage to the stadium, caused by a section of APOEL fans,” police spokesman Andreas Angelides said yesterday. According to Angelides a letter was sent by the police to the president of the Cyprus Football Association (KOP) on November 12. In the letter he was warned that Melkonian stadium was unfit to host the game and according to the existing law, should not go ahead. But sources at KOP claimed yesterday that the letter police sent only informed them that there would be no police presence at the game. Futsal has become increasingly popular as a spectator sport, but traditional rivalries between the big clubs have meant a growing number of incidents between fans at futsal matches. “We may have to meet with KOP to discuss whether the increase in incidents in futsal matches might require a police presence,” Angelides responded. At the incident on Thursday, a firecracker was thrown into the changing room after the match - which APOEL won 9-2 - resulting in the injury of two AEL players, aged 29 and 23. Rocks were also thrown and windows broken. “We were lucky that we caught wind of what might happen and managed to make a run for it before the firecracker was thrown into the changing room, otherwise it wouldn’t have only been two or three of us that got severely injured,” said AEL player Pambos Demetriou. According to Robert Ursell who plays for APOEL, Thursday’s incident was in retaliation to a clash when the two teams met earlier in the season in Limassol.

Commenting on the increased tensions in the region after Israel’s latest attack on Gaza, the commissioner commented, “It’s like throwing gasoline on ﬁre.” With over 500,000 Palestinian refugees currently in Syria any escalation of tension in the region would leave them with “nowhere to go,” she said.

THE EUROPEAN Union has launched a drawing and writing contest for eight to 24-year-olds, with the four winners being invited to the 2012 Nobel Peace prize ceremony in Oslo. This contest is organised in partnership with the European Youth Forum. The four winners will be invited by the Presidents of the European Council, the European Commission and the European Parliament to be part of the official delegation of the EU that will travel to Oslo to receive this year’s Peace Prize. Launching the contest, Council President Herman Van Rompuy, Commission President Manuel Barroso and Parliament President Martin Schulz issued a joint statement, saying: “The 2012 Nobel Peace prize is not only a recognition of the European Union’s past achievements: it also looks to the future. Our task is always to inspire the next generation of Europeans.” Peace, Europe, Future: What does Peace in Europe mean to you? This is the question put to young people from the EU. Children aged eight to 12 should express their answer in a drawing, young people aged 13 to 24 in a short text of maximum 120 characters, in any of the 23 EU official languages. The contest will be open until November 25, midnight Central European Time. The European Youth Forum will preselect the 16 best entries for each age group (8-12, 13-17, and 18-24). A jury will select three of the final winners (one per age group) who will win a trip to Oslo. The names of the winners will be announced during the week of December 3. By Bejay Browne PAPHOS aims to be recognised as the main hub for sailing in the Eastern Mediterranean following the opening ceremony of a new sailing centre, ‘Sail First’, earlier this week. A tutorial and racing event at Paphos harbour to promote the centre was attended by the mayor of Paphos Savvas Vergas who said Paphos provided ideal sailing conditions and that the new centre would have multiple positive beneﬁts for the district. These included the extension of the tourist season and the development of sports tourism. “These will help to boost the poor local economic climate,” he said.

Rolandis Michele a spokesman for Sail First said the centre aimed to make sailing and racing more accessible to everyone. “Anyone who is interested in sailing can be taught how to do so, whether it’s to race or to enjoy the experience of being on the sea,” he said. He added that as an international sailing centre, Sail First will be able to host many European races. This week alone, he said, a hundred Russian sailing enthusiasts had arrived in Paphos to take part in races and a regatta. People cash in life insurance policies to make ends meet By Peter Stevenson AS THE crisis bites, 40 per cent more people cashed in their life insurance policies in the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year, statistics released by the Insurance Association of Cyprus show. A total of €111m was redeemed by policy holders between January and June of this year, compared to €79m over the same period in 2011. “It’s an easy way for people to get money during the economic crisis,” general manager of the association, Stephie Dracos told the Cyprus Mail. “Banks are no longer giving out loans, the value of land is depreciating and stock prices are falling, so redeeming their policies is a simple option,” she added. Dracos warned that people should only redeem their insurance policies in cases of real emergencies as “insurance exists to help people out during a problem or difficult time”. Leading life insurance firms such as Laiki Cyprialife are aware of the trend. “Given the current economic climate in Cyprus the policy redemptions appear higher than previous years,” said investment manager for Laiki, Chrysanthos Pantazis.

Lack of money to keep up the monthly premiums is another reason customers are cashing in policies, said Dracos. Laiki Cyprialife is attempting to help customers maintain their payments by rearranging payment schemes. “We understand the changes to the financial situation of our clients and we therefore actively offer them various flexible solutions to reduce their monthly payment, while maintaining an adequate insurance coverage for their needs,” said Pantazis. And despite the large increase in life insurance policy cash-ins, the statistics were not all doom and gloom. The total amount of money paid to insurance companies over the first six months of 2012 has risen by 2.21 per cent compared to the same period in 2011. In 2011 over that period, insurance companies received €228.01m compared to €233.05m this year. “People understand the importance of insurance policies,” explained Dracos. Payments towards insurance policies that cover accidents, healthcare and property for example have risen substantially. “Because of the rising cost of medicine and healthcare people prefer to pay a little bit more for insurance,” she added.

ANIMAL shelters are reaching breaking point, as the economic crisis has led to an increase in the number of people abandoning their dogs. “Around 170,000 dogs are abandoned in Cyprus every year,” Mary Anastasi, president of the Voice of the Animals organisation, told the House environmental committee yesterday when it met to discuss the welfare of animals in Cyprus. “Animal shelters cannot cope with this huge burden, which has unfortunately worsened with the economic crisis.” She said her organisation recommends a control, protection and public animal health service to be created in order to improve animal welfare. But committee president AKEL MP Adamos Adamou said it wasn’t just the present crisis that was a cause for concern when it came to the treatment of dogs. “The animal abuse that takes place in Cyprus has on numerous occasions been exposed on the internet, causing international outcry and creating a terrible image for us abroad,” he told the meeting. DIKO MP Sofoklis Fittis added that the existing law on the protection and welfare of dogs and other animals has not been operating satisfactorily. A new bill, that ﬁnes owners who break the law and also sets a maximum number of pets per resident or family, has to be submitted by March. The extent of the problem can be seen in the case of the Dali municipality which has so far collected 217 stray dogs this year, an increase from the 187 collected during the entire year of 2011. An increasing number of dogs have been abandoned as more and more people are unable to cover the costs of feeding and

The Sirius Dog Sanctuary can take no more animals after a surge in numbers this summer providing veterinary care for their pets. Panayiotis Harpas, health inspector for Dali municipality, told the Cyprus Mail yesterday that with the help of volunteers and the Voice of the Animals organisation,

they have so far managed to avoid euthanising the dogs, and try their best to have the dogs adopted. Sirius Dog Sanctuary in Limassol is suffering a similar fate. They have reached maximum capacity after a

surge of abandoned dogs this summer, and are unable to take in anymore. The sanctuary is also at risk of shutting down unless donations from the public and the number of shelter volunteers increase.

Britain BBC says sorry to chief rabbi over Gaza The BBC has apologised to Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks after he appeared to have been caught off-guard with an on-air question about the situation in Gaza. The deadly exchange of rockets and airstrikes between Gaza and Israel has seen lives lost on both sides and the assassination of Ahmed Jabari, the Hamas military chief, in a drone strike on his car on Wednesday has intensiďŹ ed the situation. THE FORMER country home of Sir Winston Churchill plays host to a new exhibition featuring never-before-seen objects from its stores and belonging to his descendants. In The Blood at Chartwell in Kent tells the story of the former wartime prime ministerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Anglo-American ancestry and considers how the two branches of his family shaped his life and character. His story is told through the display of 50 objects from the Chartwell stores and on loan from private collections belonging to Churchillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s descendants, the National Trust said. Highlights include a pair of duelling pistols and Garter Star belonging to Churchillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 17th century ancestor John, 1st Duke of Marlborough, builder of Blenheim Palace. Diamond, ruby and sapphire rings given by Churchillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father, Lord Randolph, to his mother have been reunited especially for the exhibition, which opened yesterday. Also on display are locks of childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hair taken from Churchill and his brother Jack, along with a photograph of their beloved nanny, as well as Churchillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s silver christening cup. Britain BRITAIN TODAY ETA member arrested in Liverpool POLICE arrested a suspected member of Basque separatist group ETA in the northern English city of Liverpool yesterday, Spain’s Interior Ministry said in a statement. It identiﬁed the man as 46-year-old Raul Sanchez Fuentes Villota and said he was linked to a series of murders and had been on the run since 1995. He was living in Britain using false documentation, it said. Fuentes Villota was a member of regional branches of ETA that carried out several murders and planted a car bomb, among other crimes in the early 1990s, the Ministry said. Merseyside Police in Liverpool said they were working with the Spanish Embassy on Fuentes Villota’s extradition. A spokeswoman added that he would appear in court in London “as soon as possible”.

The 72-year-old woman, who is known as Sister Ruth Augustus, was found guilty of six counts of hoaxes involving noxious substances last July and yesterday was told she must serve a two-year community order with mental health treatment requirements. The letters were intercepted at a mail screening centre last year and the powder was found to be non-hazardous, the Old Bailey heard. Augustus, of Leyton, east London, accepted she sent envelopes with letters in them, but claimed police put the white powder in them. Mark Kimsey, prosecuting, said three envelopes were intercepted at a mail screening centre in east London on June 17 last year. One was addressed to Clegg and on the envelope was written “devil worshipping”, “freemason”, “sex with 30 plus women”. The second was to Bar-

The comments were not visible to the general public, and were posted outside work time, but the trust said he broke its code of conduct by expressing religious or political

Ireland pledges to clarify abortion rules IRELAND’S government has pledged to clarify its abortion laws after an Indian woman who was refused a termination died from blood poisoning in an Irish hospital. Thousands took to the streets to protest on Wednesday after news broke of the death of Savita Halappanavar of septicaemia following a miscarriage 17 weeks into her pregnancy. Activists in the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country, which has some of the world’s most restrictive laws on abortion, say the refusal by doctors to terminate the pregnancy earlier may have contributed to her death. “I was deeply disturbed yesterday by what Savita’s husband said. I don’t think as a country we should allow a

situation where women’s rights are put at risk in this way,” Deputy Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore told parliament on Thursday. “There is no question of equivocation. We need to bring legal clarity to this issue and that is what we are going to do.”

DOCTORS’ DECISION Irish law does not specify under what circumstances the threat to the life or health of the mother is high enough to justify a termination, leaving doctors to decide. Critics say this means doctors’ personal beliefs can play a role. Halappanavar was admitted to hospital in severe pain on October 21 and asked for a termination after doctors

told her the baby would not survive, according to her husband Praveen. The foetus was surgically removed when its heartbeat stopped days later, but her family believes the delay contributed to the blood poisoning that killed Halappanavar on October 28. Praveen said he would wait for the results of an investigation before deciding whether to sue, but that Ireland’s Roman Catholic tradition appeared to have been a factor in the decision to deny a termination. “I am still in shock. It is hard to believe that religion can mean somebody’s life,” Praveen Halappanavar told Reuters. He said he planned to return to Ireland from India, where he travelled with his wife’s body.

FRENCH officials angrily rejected a charge by Britain’s The Economist weekly yesterday that France was the “time-bomb at the heart of Europe” and a danger to the euro single currency, accusing the magazine of sensationalism. Its main article raised concerns that Socialist President Francois Hollande’s economic reforms are not ambitious enough, warning that financial markets could turn against France, and so could jeopardise the future of the euro. The government retorted that the Economist report did not take into account corporate tax rebates unveiled last week which amount to a 6 per cent reduction in labour costs, a measure it believes will add jobs and reduce a ballooning trade deficit. Public spending cuts announced in that package, along with existing budget measures, should add up to 60 billion euros in savings over Hollande’s five-year term, the government says, an effort the Economist has not factored in. “Their analysis is outdated, it’s not accurate anymore,” said Thomas Philippon, an adviser to Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici. “Cutting 60 billion euros in five years is anything but easy and it’s anything but timid.”

SUSPECTED Hezbollah operative Ali Mussa Daqduq was freed by Iraqi authorities and ﬂew to Lebanon yesterday after an Iraqi court acquitted him of involvement in the killing of ﬁve U.S. soldiers, his lawyer said. The move was likely to anger the United States, which handed Daqduq over to Iraqi custody last December after failing to convince Baghdad to extradite him over his role in a 2007 kidnapping that ended in the killing of the soldiers. “There was no reason for his detention. Last night the decision was made to release him. He is out now and arrived in Beirut two hours ago,” lawyer Abdulalmehdi al-Mutiri told Reuters by phone. “There are no charges against him in Iraq. His detention was political, not legal.” Earlier this year, US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta told Reuters he had received assurances from Iraq it would not release Daqduq, even though an Iraqi court had cleared him of the charges.

CONGRESSIONAL leaders emerged from a meeting with President Barack Obama yesterday vowing to find common ground on taxes and spending that would allow them to head off a looming “fiscal cliff” that could push the economy back into recession. CEMENT maker Lafarge and miner Anglo American have agreed to sell British assets for up to £285 million ($452 million), clearing the way for a building materials joint venture in the country. The sale, to Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, was a condition set by Britain’s Competition Commission to allow the two ﬁrms to combine their building materials activities. Lafarge and Anglo said yesterday they would sell a number of construction materials operations in Britain as well as Anglo unit Tarmac’s 50 per cent interest in Midland Quarry Products, one of the UK’s main suppliers of hard rock and asphalts. Nomura analysts said the deal could be seen as a positive for investors fretting over a potential rights issue at the Mittal family’s debt-burdened ﬂagship

asset, ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steelmaker. “Spending $450 million on construction material assets now does not necessarily sound like someone who is thinking about imminently piling in a few billion dollars into his steel business as part of an equity raise,” they said. Anglo, refocusing on core mining activities, struggled for more than three years to ﬁnd a buyer for Tarmac before agreeing last year to a joint venture with France-based Lafarge’s British cement, aggregates, concrete and asphalt businesses. The price for the assets, which include one of the UK’s largest cement plants, includes up to £30 million contingent on future performance. A Lafarge spokeswoman said the company would receive around 160 million

euros ($205 million) from the sale of its British assets, which it would use to cut its debt. She added that with this deal, Lafarge had raised nearly 650 million euros from asset sales this year against a target of at least 1 billion euros. The French company has been shedding non-core assets and refocusing on its cement and concrete business after the debt it racked up to acquire Middle Eastern cement maker Orascom in 2007 led to the loss of its investment-grade credit rating last year. Britain’s Competition Commission began looking into the proposed venture, which would have rung up annual sales worth £1.8 billion ($2.9 billion) in 2010, after the tie-up was challenged by the country’s consumer affairs watchdog, the Ofﬁce of Fair Trading, in September last year.

Twinkies maker Hostess Brands Inc seeks US court’s permission to go out of business HOSTESS Brands Inc, the bankrupt maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, has sought a U.S. court’s permission to go out of business after failing to get wage and beneﬁt cuts from thousands of its striking bakery workers.

Hostess, which has about $2.5 billion in sales from a long list of snack cakes and breads, ﬁled the request with the US Bankruptcy Court in New York early yesterday morning. The Irving, Texas-based company said the liquida-

tion would mean that most of its 18,500 employees would lose their jobs. Hostess immediately suspended operations at all of its 33 plants across the United States as it moves to start liquidating assets, it said.

“We’ll be selling the brands and as much of the infrastructure as we can,” said company spokesman Lance Ignon. “There is value in the brands. But some bakeries will never open again as bakeries.”

Ignon said the company was making ﬁnal deliveries yesterday of products made Thursday night. Hostess’ topselling wares are its chocolate cupcakes, cream-ﬁlled Twinkies cakes and its powdered sugar and frosted “Donettes”.

Immigration department’s abuse of power has to stop THE MIGRATION Department has always behaved as if it were an agency in a totalitarian country. Abuse of power is routine, accountability non-existent, entrapment of people part of the procedures and xenophobia endemic. The abuses of the department are legend, while on the few occasions ministers have tried to call it into account, they have failed to get anywhere. It continues with its heavy-handed and arbitrary ways in the fight to protect the country from all the third world foreigners who want to live and work here. Its most recent excess, censured in a damning report by the ombudswoman, defied belief. The department forced families with a foreign mother, seeking a residence permit or citizenship for her child, to undergo DNA testing to prove the father was a Cypriot national. It did not matter that the Cypriot father’s name was on the birth certificate - failure to take the test, when requested by the department, guaranteed a rejection of the application. The applicant is even obliged to foot the €1,000 bill for the DNA test. This is nothing short of blackmail by the state against its own citizens, who supposedly have rights. As the ombudswoman’s report said: “The department is violating the principle of legality and, by extension, the human right to family and private life ... the practice followed by the department has no legal basis and cannot be tolerated in a rule of law state like ours.” It also smacks of racism, persecuting a Cypriot man because he had a child with a non-EU national. It did not matter that his name was on the birth certificate - he could not be believed by the Department, because he had had the child with a foreign woman and had to scientifically prove that he was the father. And what if he was not the biological father, but wanted to live with the woman and bring up the child as his own? Does any state authority have the right to prevent him making this life choice? The authoritarian head of the Migration Department, Anny Shakallis seems to think so. The DNA tests are only sanctioned by Ms Shakallis who has made a habit of abusing the discretionary powers of her position. And not only does she believe she has the right to overstep the boundaries set by the law, she also feels she is entitled to impose her moral values on anyone who has the misfortune to apply to her department. By what on authority does Ms Shakalli dictate what is morally acceptable in a marriage between a Cypriot and a foreigner? Is it really her job to stop a man from living with a foreign woman because he is not the biological father of her child? For how much longer will Ms Shakalli be allowed to act like a despot, violating rights, ignoring the law and imposing her moral values on citizens?

The emerging world’s education imperative O

fﬁcial delegations from the world’s nine most populous developing countries just met in New Delhi to discuss a subject vital for their countries’ futures: education. The meeting of ministers and others from Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria and Pakistan, known as the E-9, is the latest in a series of encounters held every two years to fulﬁll the pledge of “education for all” by 2015. The E-9 account for 54% of the world’s population, 42.3% of children not in school, 58% of young illiterates (aged 1524), and 67% of adult illiterates (two-thirds of whom are women). So the challenges are enormous: children, from families too poor to think about education, beyond the reach of schooling and too malnourished to study; and too few schools, classrooms, teaching resources, and adequately trained teachers. Rampant illiteracy underpins other problems, including exploding populations, gender imbalances, and widespread poverty. India provides a good ex-

Comment Shashi Tharoor ample of how these problems should be addressed. A decade ago, 30 million Indian children were not in school; today, the ﬁgure is three million. A far-reaching Right to Education Act, obliging the state and central governments to provide (as a constitutional right) eight years of free and compulsory education to all children between six and 14, has had a large impact. And free mid-day meals at school are a powerful incentive to children from poor families to attend school and stay there. This does not mean that all enrolled students will emerge prepared for the information age; but getting children into school is a start. India also needs a relevant curriculum and skilled teachers who can motivate students to learn it – in short, an overdue emphasis on quality, in addition to ofﬁcals’ understandable focus on access and inclusion. There are 540 million Indians under the age of 25. The labour force is expected to increase

by 32% over the next 20 years, whereas it will decline by 4% in industrialised countries and by nearly 5% in China. India’s favourable demographic profile can add significantly to its economic-growth potential for the next three decades, provided that its young people are educated and trained properly. Otherwise, the same young people will swell the ranks of the frustrated and unemployed, with unimaginable consequences in terms of social unrest and the risk of organised violence. Maoist groups already target such people for recruitment. If India is to avoid an apocalyptic fate, it must give them a better chance of gainful employment through more and improved educational opportunities. India has one of the largest higher-education systems in the world, and ranks second in terms of student enrollment. But, while the country now has 621 universities and 33,500 colleges, only a few are world-class institutions, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) whose graduates have flourished in

America’s Silicon Valley. But such institutions are still islands in a sea of mediocrity. India is entering the global employment marketplace with a self-imposed handicap of which we are just beginning to become aware. For far too long, we were complacent, having produced, since the 1960’s, the world’s second largest pool of trained scientists and engineers. They were more than our then-protected economy could absorb, so many tens of thousands of them left to make their fortunes elsewhere, founding companies in Silicon Valley, inventing the Pentium chip, and even winning a couple of Nobel Prizes. The next ten years could witness a dramatic transformation of education in India. But it will not happen without a huge national effort. ’ve never known why the old nickname for the BBC was Auntie, but I suppose it was for ‘Auntie knows best’, a bygone age when Aunts and Uncles, all those ‘grown ups’ one knew in a child’s world, were afforded respect for their age and wisdom: given the scandal surrounding the BBC and the intrusion of adults into childhood innocence how ironic that seems now. But I want to defend the BBC, or at least part of it. To be accurate: the World at One, Desert Island Discs, I’m sorry I haven’t a Clue and Gardeners’ Question Time. In other words: those informative, sentimental and playful programmes that give serious and funny analysis and tips on how to prune my hydrangeas. Of course, they are all radio. One of the BBC’s best innovations of recent months is the free introduction of Radio

For, a long time there seems to have been a mismatch between the quality of discussion and analysis on BBC Radio, and what appears on BBC TV, which is, more or less, indistinguishable from its commercial rivals. Now we see one of the few remaining ﬂagship BBC investigative programmes, Newsnight,

battling within itself for power and position, passing the buck of responsibility like a hot coal, with no-one actually admitting to or explaining the ‘shoddy journalism’, as Chris Patten called it, to the licence fee payers. Whatever happens in the Jimmy Savile enquiry, and if ever a man was trialled by Twitter it was him, I ﬁnd myself wincing. For creepy as he was, this posthumous picking of his bones without his defence of his crimes; without police prosecution or explanations from the programme makers is even creepier. For anyone watching the endless loop of BBC World there is a timely lecture by Lyse Doucet, long-term BBC foreign correspondent, on the use of new technologies in news gathering: the most pertinent section is about validity. She vividly demonstrates how evidence on YouTube can be manufactured

to distort truth, how unreliable social media stories must now be viewed with suspicion until corroborated. For news agencies cheap use of second-hand images and Twitter gossip trails must be economically tempting, but when images can start wars, Facebook fuel rebellions and Twitter can condemn men, like Lord Macalpine, to be labelled wrongly, it’s a dangerous game. We need old-fashioned honest eyewitness journalism. Let’s rely on professional BBC journalists on the ground with their microphone, even if that mike is on a mobile. Let’s cut BBC radio free of its big brother TV, reduce the licence fee, and allow BBC TV to be the commercial organisation it wants to be. For when it comes to good journalism I trust the voices of those who are actually there.

Variety is the key to this year’s three-hour ceremony from Los Angeles, with performers including Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, 1990s ska-punk band No Doubt, alt-rockers Linkin Park, country-pop darling Taylor Swift, Korean Internet sensation Psy and British-Irish boy band The Wanted. “The AMAs reﬂects pop culture, which is all forms of music, all genres, pop, rock, country, hip hop, alternative ... all these things that normally don’t together. It’s our job to make it ﬂow,” producer Larry Klein told Reuters. R&B star Rihanna, 24, and Minaj, 29, tied for the most nominations this year, with four apiece, and will battle each other in the hotly contested female pop-rock category. Hitchcock’s earliest film Jude Law ‘not a womaniser’ work is released online THE earliest known surviving feature in which Alfred Hitchcock is credited was released online on Thursday after sitting under the noses of archivists for decades. The recovered parts of 1924’s The White Shadow, in which Hitchcock served as an assistant director among other credits, will be streamed for free for the next two months at the U.S. National Film Preservation Foundation’s website, the non-profit group said in a statement. The White Shadow, a silent British melodrama directed by Graham Cutts and a financial flop, tells the story of twin sisters, one angelic and the other soulless. It stars Betty Compson as the twins. The New Zealand Film Archive stumbled across three of the film’s delicate nitrate reels in its collection last year. No other copies are known to exist. The foundation, which supports film preservation in the United States, said it was able to stream the film online from cash donations and bandwidth donated by the online film service Fandor. Hitchcock, who shot to international prominence with The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) and The 39 Steps (1935), is additionally credited as writer, art director and editor. The White Shadow is also believed to be the first surviving production that Hitchcock, then 24, worked on with Alma Reville, whom he married in 1926. Part of Hitchcock’s and Reville’s life together has been dramatised in Hitchcock, starring Anthony Hopkins as Hitchcock and Helen Mirren as Reville. The film is set to be released on November 23.

AS vampires Bella and Edward take their last bites on the big screen, Hollywood studios are on the hunt for the next Twilight, a movie that plays on teenage angst and, more importantly, lights up the movie box office. The first four Twilight movies earned $2.5 billion at theatres worldwide, propelled by passionate fans of a book series about a vampire-andwerewolf teen love triangle. Box office watchers project Breaking Dawn - Part 2 will haul in $150 million at U.S. and Canadian theatres this weekend, one of the year’s biggest film debuts. Eager to replicate that performance, studios executives have been trolling through young adult novels with the dream of uncovering the next big blockbuster franchise, paying as much as $1 million to secure the film rights to the hottest books. At least four films based on books for teenagers will reach theatres next year, with young love forced to overcome alien parasites, evil zombies and other supernatural bad guys. Executives hope they can uncover a story that excites tech-savvy teens, who supercharged the buzz mill for The Hunger Games and other hits by spreading the word to friends through social media posts. “It’s a very enthusiastic and deep passion that young people feel for a book they love,” said Nina Jacobson, executive producer of The Hunger Games, which spawned a blockbuster film franchise with $687 million in worldwide ticket sales this spring. “When they love something, they share it,” Jacobson said. The four-year Twilight movie saga lifted tiny studio Summit Entertainment into Hollywood’s big leagues and paved the way for its $412 million acquisition in January by Lions Gate Entertainment, the studio behind The Hunger Games. The coming young adult films incorporate paranormal themes like those in the Twilight movies or dark dystopian futures and battles for survival reminiscent of The Hunger Games, and do it through the drama of young love. Summit is aiming to get Twilight fans buzzing about next February’s zombie romance Warm Bodies with a trailer before Breaking Dawn - Part 2. Still, there is no guarantee book lovers will flock to a movie version of their favourite read, said Keith Simanton, managing editor of movie website IMDB.com. Film adaptations of The Seeker and The Spiderwick Chronicles failed to give birth to the kind of big movie franchises that have become the lifeblood of Hollywood’s movie studios, he said. “It is going to continue to be a trend, until one of them fails in a big way,” Simanton said.

New Lumia phones seen winning Nokia more time Struggling Finnish company in battle with Apple and Samsung By Ritsuko Ando NOKIA’S new Lumia smartphones are trickling into the market and early signs suggest they may sell well enough to give the handset maker more time in its ﬁght against industry leaders Samsung and Apple. But investors shouldn’t expect a quick turnaround for the struggling Finnish cellphone maker, with rival gadgets like mini tablet computers vying for consumers’ attention, analysts said. “Positive reviews are a great start but as we have seen many times before these won’t deliver strong sales volumes on their own,” said Pete Cunningham, an analyst at research ﬁrm Canalys. Successful sales of the latest Lumia 920 and 820 models are crucial for Nokia’s survival. The former market leader is burning through cash while it loses share in both high-end smartphones and cheaper handsets. FIM Securities analyst Michael Schroder forecast Nokia will sell 1-3 million of the new models this quarter. It sold 2.9 million older Lumia models in the third quarter, compared to Apple’s sales of around 26.6 million iPhones in the same period. “In any case the uptake will not be massive,” he predicted. Lumia’s sales could serve a verdict on Chief Executive Stephen Elop’s decision in February 2011 to partner with Microsoft instead of using Google’s Android or continuing to develop Nokia’s own operating system. Investors had feared poor reviews and weak sales could bring an end to the company’s smartphone business early next year.

Skype faces up to password flaw

SKYPE has tackled a password reset ﬂaw which could be exploited to hijack the video chat service’s accounts. The vulnerability was discussed on a Russian blog about three months ago, but was only tackled after details were shared on news discussion site Reddit. The issue could have exposed answerphone messages, old text message conversations and user details including date of birth. Skype said it had now resolved the issue. “Early on Wednesday morning we were notiﬁed of user concerns surrounding the security of the password reset feature on our website,” said engineer Leonas Sendrauskas. “This issue affected some users where multiple Skype accounts were registered to the same email address. “We suspended the password reset feature temporarily this morning as a precaution and have made updates to the password reset process today so that it is now working properly. “We are reaching out to a small number of users who may have been impacted to assist as necessary. Skype is committed to providing a safe and secure communications experience to our users and we apologise for the incon-

venience.” A how-to-guide was ﬁrst shared on Russian forum Xeksec. It involves using a victim’s Skype-registered email address to create a new account which is also linked to an email account owned by the attacker. If a password change is then requested using the target’s username, the hijacker can access the resulting reset token via the Skype app itself using the newly-created bogus log-in. This can then be used to lock out the account’s owner and access their details. Skype blanks all but the last four digits of stored credit card accounts preventing the hackers from being able to steal cash, however they could have used up spare credit. The security hole was conﬁrmed by The Next Web which subsequently brought it to Skype’s attention. It follows on from a revelation last month that the program could be used to distribute malware via its instant message tool. The news comes amid a campaign by Microsoft to convince members of its Windows Live Messenger chat tool to switch to Skype. It plans to retire WLM by March 2013 across the world, with the exception of China.

All eyes on Call of Duty after strong Halo 4 launch By Malathi Nayak MICROSOFT’S Halo 4 action-shooter video game delivered robust sales on its launch - a good sign for the flagging video game industry and setting up a tough battle with Activision Blizzard Inc’s latest Call of Duty. As more gamers migrate from console gaming to mobile offerings on tablets and smartphones, the video game industry has seen revenues decline and the performance of both titles in the upcoming holiday shopping season and 2013 is being watched closely as a gauge of future demand for the sector. Call of Duty is currently the biggest-selling title on Microsoft’s Xbox and strong sales for Halo 4 could eat into its sales on that console. But unlike Halo 4, it is also available on PCs, Sony’s PlayStation and Nintendo’s Wii consoles. Microsoft said Halo 4 racked up $220 million in global sales on its launch day, surpassing the $200 million made by the previous installment, Halo: Reach, which was released in 2010. Halo 4 will likely reach $300 million in sales in its first week, the company said. Activision raised its earning outlook last week on expectations of strong holiday sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops II, saying it hoped it would beat previous Call of Duty records. The previous installment Modern Warfare 3 garnered more than $400 million in sales on its first day in stores in North America and the United Kingdom, setting a video game industry record and hit $1 billion in 16 days after launch. The latest Call of Duty was available for PCs, the Xbox and PlayStation consoles from Tuesday, while a dedicated Wii U version will be released when the new console hits stores on November 18. Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia said that good starts were being seen for some popular titles - in addition to a 15 per cent rise in sales for Halo 4 over its previous installment, Ubisoft’s actionadventure game Assassin’s Creed III that launched in October is on track to double sales compared to last year’s offering. He said that even a small rise in sales or flat sales from last year for the Black Ops II launch would bode well for the quarter. “There’s no reason to believe the early sales won’t be strong but the question is beyond the December quarter,” he said. “It boils down to the legs the game may have beyond the first few weeks or the first quarter.” Call of Duty has been the top-selling game property during the holiday period in November and December since 2008 and represented 14 per cent of retail software sales last holiday, Liam Callahan, industry analyst at research firm NPD Group, said.

Cyprus’ architectural heritage

For centuries colonists have left their home countries behind to venture off to far-away lands. As they settled permanently into outposts at the farthest reaches of the globe, these colonists built structures that combined the architecture of their countries of origin with the design characteristics of their new abode. Such a synthesis of tradition and regionalism created an unusual hybrid design. Our architectural heritage is one of the most tangible aspects of our heritage. But how well do you know your own city? Next week, the general public in the capital have the opportunity to attend an intriguing lecture on British colonial architecture in Cyprus between 1878 and 1960. During the 19th century, Britain amassed the largest territorial empire the world had ever seen. With this expansion came the export of architecture and urban planning, the visual and spatial consequences of which were profound and unprecedented. The colonial structures that still stand today in Cyprus are the product of careful planning. The ideas and practices of architectural modernism really began to be introduced to Cyprus in the 1930s, when an increasing number of professional European educated architects established their practices on the island. Believe it or not, there are over 700 buildings and works and an extensive network of infrastructure which survive from the period of British rule in Cyprus. Yet, there is little knowledge or understanding among Cypriots, particularly the younger generation, as to what this heritage is, what it means and what its future might be. This Wednesday, at 7pm, Professor Costas Georghiou will present a lecture at the University of Nicosia’s Architecture Research Centre, based on his forthcoming book, which aims to address this knowledge gap. This is the ﬁrst comprehensive and scholarly study of the architecture and town planning of the British colonial administration in Cyprus, 1878-1960. The lecture will examine the colonial context within which the buildings and infrastructure were created, and will describe, analyse and evaluate some of the most signiﬁcant buildings and works. It’s important to note that while the lecture is primarily about architecture, town planning and development, it can also be appreciated by audience members who simply wish to know more about what physical structures can tell us about history, colonialism and decision-making. Dad’s gone to a cheaper When his annual income plummeted by three quarters Andrew Gimson carried on spending. Then his wife took away his cash card and put him in charge of the weekly shop. He reveals how he faced the frugal truth - and it wasn’t all bad

HAVE always thought of myself as a reasonably frugal person. At the age of 54, when I fell out with my employees, my income dropped from about £100,000 a year to about the British national average of £25,000, I got the chance to discover whether I really was. Several large economies could be made at once. I converted to an interest-only mortgage and stopped making pension contributions. To reduce the temptation to spend cash, I reduced the amount of money I took out of ATMs from £200 to £100 a time. Apart from this I went on behaving pretty much as I had behaved before. Apparently this is what people usually do when their income drops. They do not at ﬁrst grasp the scale of the change

that is required. Our overdraft rose towards the high limit set by our bank in the days when I was a high earner. My wife Sally, who gets about £10,000 a year for her work as a local councillor, is quicker on the uptake than I am, and better at grasping unwelcome problems. She rang the bank and went through our spending line by line. This led to the cancellation of a large number of standing orders. But it also led to the discovery that in the past month I had withdrawn £1,100 from cash machines. Where had all this money gone? I drew up a rough tally but could only account for about half of it. The man at the bank, who had a rugged northern accent and during the cull of standing orders had already identiﬁed a number of worthless causes

which we were supporting, now regarded me as a suspect character who was ruining the family by wasting money on secret pleasures. In vain I protested that I was not keeping a mistress but the man at the bank decided I must no longer be allowed to take any money out of cash machines. For several weeks Sally bought all the food we needed and I had no money in my pocket. When spending became completely unavoidable I ran up small debts: £6.30 to the local shop, £22 owed to our younger daughter (who had received a gift from her godmother), £26 to our older daughter (who earns money babysitting). Our son remained untouched for money as he did not have any. There is no doubt that our outgoings were much reduced. We were not discovering what

She then had to go away for a few days without having time to restock the house. She suggested I do this by going to Iceland, a supermarket I had never used. The wilful ugliness of the shop’s sign had somehow persuaded me that it could not be a place where I would feel at home. But what a wonderful place it is once you get inside. In the supermarkets I used to visit I often found it quite hard to work out what things cost. In Iceland there is no such difficulty. The price labels are completely clear. Many items cost either £1 or £2. The first thing to catch my eye was a

large bottle of Fairy Liquid costing £2. This struck me as very good value. In our corner shop I usually pay £1.29 for a much smaller one. A litre of Flash cost £1, while some dishwasher tabs for which I would usually expect to pay £2.99 could be had for £1.50. I became so enthusiastic about this shop, so high on the pleasures of frugality, that I spent £34.25, which was more than I had intended, but which together with some fruit and veg bought off a stall was enough to keep us going for three days. Not that everything from Iceland was equally good. A large pork pie that cost only £1 was frankly a disappointment. The fresh spinach at £1 a bag was ﬁne, as were the Herta frankfurters

I realise that if one and persistence, and cook, one can obta for cheap and delici different at £3 for 20. The children have been uncomplaining about the new regime. In negotiations that took place over my head, they obtained in return for certain austerities during the week the promise of a roast dinner each weekend: a demand which, for a time, could be satisﬁed by the purchase (not by me) of a joint of pork for only £5.60, or £2.70/kg, on special offer (now ended) from Sainsbury’s. We look back with affection to the days when I would go to Giacobazzi’s, our wonderful local Italian deli, where for a modest sum one could obtain such delights as fresh pasta, pizza, focaccia, pecorino romano cheese, fennel salami and various kinds of olives. For some reason the children especially miss the olives. But there is no doubt Iceland is cheaper. More expert shoppers will smile at the naivety of these remarks. I realise that if one has enough time and persistence, and is a skilful enough cook, one can obtain the ingredients for cheap and delicious dishes in many different places. Most supermarkets have raised their prices so high that they have had to introduce a range of basics that poor people can actually afford. It is in ﬁlling a shopping trolley that

ples as baked beans, which I used to eat straight from the tin when I ﬁrst arrived in London, had somehow passed out of my life. In 1992, when I met Sally, she possessed a copy of Delia Smith’s Frugal Food, already disintegrating from heavy use, and would think nothing of feeding 20 friends in the youth-hostel-like kitchen above the pub where she rented a room. We got married and moved to Berlin. By the time we returned to London, quite a few of our friends had become rich. When they invited us to dinner, they would give us champagne beforehand, and we would sit down at a table that did not in any way remind one of a youth hostel, for even if the occasion was informal, the food was anything but. Giving a dinner party is a bit like giving a wedding. However much you try to simplify things, it is hard to stop the preparations becoming more elaborate than you originally intended. If 18 months ago your great friends the Joneses gave you champagne, and a meal in which Elizabeth David would ﬁnd nothing to criticise, it seems a bit mean not to go to as much trouble and expense oneself. When Disraeli wrote of “two nations”, he meant the rich and the poor, “between whom there is no intercourse and no sympathy; who are as ignorant of each other’s habits, thoughts and feelings as if they were inhabitants of different planets; who are formed by a different breeding, are fed by a different food, are ordered by different manners, and are not governed by the same laws”. When I bump into my neighbour Ed Miliband in Iceland I will know he is really getting serious about One Nation politics.

Television PICK OF THE DAY Once Upon a Time in the West (CyBC2, 21.45) Once upon a time in the (Hollywood) West there were Westerns where the hero wore a white hat, the baddies were often Injuns [sic] and laconic cowboy types were played by the likes of Randolph Scott and Henry Fonda - but that time is now long gone, and in fact it was gone even 40 years ago when Once Upon a Time in the West came out. The brand-new True Grit [see Film Picks], for all its violence and trendy ambiguity, is actually more of a classical Western than this 43-year-old Sergio Leone classic, ostensibly a ‘spaghetti Western’ but actually an epic vision with a downright Marxist sensibility and Fonda playing an unsmiling bad man who (shockingly) kills a little boy in cold blood in his very fi rst scene. This was Leone’s follow-up to the three ‘Man With No Name’ fi lms starring Clint Eastwood (A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) but it aimed even higher, bringing the Western to a pitch of visual poetry. It’s a crying shame that he only directed two more fi lms in the 20 years until his death in 1989. Begin at the beginning, with the great credits sequence - a 10-minute tour de force of wordless tension as three men wait at a railway station in the middle of nowhere. There’s no music, just a symphony of sound effects. One man is distract-

ed by a buzzing fl y. Water drips on another’s bald head. The third cracks his knuckles. Throughout, a squeaking windmill adds its distant scream every few seconds. The men wait impassively, till a train’s whistle is heard in the distance. Then they meet Charles Bronson as ‘Harmonica’. “Looks like we’re shy one horse,” they snicker. He shakes his head implacably: “You brought two too many”. Then ... well, you know. Then we move to the massacre at the farmhouse, Ennio Morricone’s score surging unforgettably as three men (led by Mr. Fonda, as already mentioned) appear over the crest of a hill, their long coats swaying in the breeze - and the fi lm could’ve ended right there and still been a masterwork. In fact, it might’ve been even better if the fi lm had ended there, because the rest of it is muddled (something about the coming of the railroad, and Claudia Cardinale as a buxom widow whose ranch stands in the way of the railway company’s plans) and it defi nitely drags here and there - but a stylish Western with at least 20 minutes of genius isn’t really something to complain about. Once upon a time in the West they made staid, conformist Westerns; then those Italians came along, and spaghetti-fied everything. Made in 1969.

Peggy Sue Got Married (LTV, 21.00) “I’m a grown woman, with a lifetime of experiences you can’t understand,” Kathleen Turner tells Nicolas Cage - which is weird since they’re both in high school, and indeed he’s her boyfriend, but what Nic doesn’t know is that Kath is from the future, magically transported back in Time from her 25-year high school reunion. She’s Peggy Sue, and married Charlie (that’s Nic) after high school, but it all went wrong; can she somehow change the future, now she’s back in her 18-year-old body? A patchy ﬁ lm, hampered by a weak ending and Cage’s ridiculous high-pitched voice (it’s directed by his uncle, Francis Coppola), yet also full of poignant nostalgia - and in fact it’s double nostalgia, the 80s (Peggy Sue’s present) being almost as remote to us as the 50s (her past). “Everything else gets tiny, but portable radios get enormous,” she says, describing ‘the future’, and the iPod Generation smiles wryly. Made in 1986.

True Grit (Novacinema2, 22.00) Hailee Steinfeld is 14-year-old Mattie, a headstrong little madam in the Wild West; she’s naturally bossy, not just in her mission - hunting down the man who killed her father - but in little ways too, fi xing a man’s tobacco or correcting the misspellings in a farewell note. That note is penned by Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), the drunk, nasty Marshal she hires to fi nd the killer - and they go on a quest, rambling through a quirky, violent, floridly talky vision of the West to the inevitable shootout, capped by an unexpected, very touching coda that somehow contrives to turn Mattie into a tragic heroine. Not bad for such an annoying little girl. A fi ne remake of a much-loved (but not outstanding) John Wayne classic, directed by the Coen Brothers in 2010.

The Change-Up (Novacinema1, 22.10) Beware: once you’ve seen Jason Bateman get a mouthful of projectile poo from his own baby in this horrible comedy, you can never un-see it (the kid’s anus even gets a loving close-up as it dilates, prior to letting fly). Jason’s a married-with-children workaholic, best friend Ryan Reynolds an irresponsible bachelor; they magically switch bodies (it’s a good night for magical switcheroos, what with this and Peggy Sue), only to fi nd that the grass isn’t always greener - or at least that’s the theory, but in fact married Jason has no serious problems in Ryan’s body. This is one of those marriageas-nightmare comedies aimed at the adolescent college crowd, its point being that married life is gross and you’re much better off smoking pot and doing nothing with your life. Basically, I hate this fi lm. Made in 2011.

By David Clough ENGLAND made a hapless start in their efforts to save the ﬁrst Test, despite an eight-and-a-half-hour demonstration from Cheteshwar Pujara of the skills they need to do so. India’s 521 for eight declared owed much to Pujara’s tour de force 206 not out, and more than a little too to the adventure of Virender Sehwag with his destructive hundred on Thursday. The upshot on day two at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad was that new England captain Alastair Cook and debutant Nick Compton’s ﬁrst task, in pursuit of an opening stalemate in this four-match series, was to come through 18 overs unscathed. Cook survived. But Compton, nightwatchman James Anderson and then Jonathan Trott could not stay with him in a distinctly unpromising stumps total of 41 for three. England were confronted immediately with Ravichandran Ashwin’s much-hyped variations, and spin at both ends by the 10th over when slow left-armer Pragyan Ojha joined in. A big off-break was too much for Compton, turning between bat and pad to hit leg-stump and give Ashwin his 50th Test wicket, in record Indian time.

Cheteshwar Pujara gave an eight-and-a-half hour batting masterclass and was unbeaten on 206 before India declared Anderson went bat-pad to Ojha an over later, and then in the next Trott fell likewise to Ashwin. Pujara had earlier ploughed on remorselessly to a maiden double-hundred at this level in only his sixth Test. He shared a ﬁfth-wicket stand of 130 with Yuvraj Singh (74), and put on another 66 for the seventh with Ashwin before England were granted a rest - after 160 overs of hard and largely unrewarded slog in the sun. Graeme Swann eventually took his wicket tally to ﬁve, for the 14th time for his country, but his successes here came at a cost of 144 runs on a lifeless surface offering only

slow and irregular turn. If there was a consolation for England, it was that this pitch has yet to show any significant signs of deterioration - and therefore their prospects of closing out a draw should remain viable. During their second consecutive wicketless morning, Yuvraj passed a poignant comeback half-century - in his first Test innings since recovering from cancer - and Pujara completed India’s second individual hundred of the match. Yuvraj reached his 98-ball 50 with a big hit over midwicket off Swann for his fifth four, to go with a one straight six also off the off-spinner.

It soon turned into a ‘groundhog’ experience for England - although, to defensive ﬁelds, runs did not come as quickly as they had for Sehwag 24 hours earlier. It was not until early afternoon that England had any respite. Yuvraj clubbed a Samit Patel full-toss to Swann in the leg-side deep, and then the off-spinner put himself back in the wickets column too when Mahendra Singh Dhoni deﬂected an attempted sweep down on to his stumps. Pujara remained less co-operative, still showing no signs of weariness as he negotiated a third successive full session

in an innings which would eventually encompass 389 balls. It also contained 21 fours, many classy deﬂections to leg and a collection driven down the ground - until England’s damage limitation left him little option but to pick off runs into a packed off-side. Kevin Pietersen had Ashwin edging a cut behind, but it was not until Zaheer Khan speared an attempted drive at Anderson to Trott at backward point that the ﬁrst wicket at last fell to pace. Shortly afterwards, with Pujara’s double-century safely in the book, Dhoni decided it was time for England’s batsmen to be tested.

WINGER Chris Ashton, forced to watch from the stands through suspension last Saturday, was so frustrated at missing England’s 54-12 victory over Fiji that he walked out of Twickenham after an hour and drove home in a sulk. As England scored seven tries, including two by his direct replacement Charlie Sharples, Ashton was left to rue the three yellow cards that led to his one-game ban, knowing he was missing a glorious opportunity to end his personal try drought. Having nailed 15 in his ﬁrst 17 internationals, the former rugby league man has now gone nine without scoring. “It’s killing me,” he told reporters this week having been recalled in place of Ugo Monye in England’s only change for today’s game

against Australia. “I was pleased for Charlie but it was so frustrating to see so many tries being scored and not be involved. “It was so frustrating I had to leave after 60 minutes, I couldn’t watch it. I just went out to the car park and drove home. Every now and then I put the radio on but I had to turn it straight off again. I couldn’t even listen. “Two weeks goes pretty slowly when you’re not allowed to play. It’s been tough and I’m glad I’m back involved.” Down-to-earth Ashton is no prima donna and stressed that he would far rather see England win without him scoring than lose with him crossing the line. But for a man who made such an explosive impact in his early tests, the dry spell is hard to deal with. “I’ve not changed anything, I’m trying to do what I do

normally,” he said. “Maybe we’re not making quite the same number of breaks at the moment but there’s not much I can do about it.” Coach Stuart Lancaster certainly has no concerns. “He’s a proven try scorer over the long haul for us,” he said. “He hasn’t scored so many recently, but you watch him in training and he’s popping up all over the place. “He’s hungry for the ball, his work rate off the ball is outstanding and his positioning and the understanding in the back three with (Saracens team mate and fullback) Alex Goode is a strength for us.” Only four players from each starting team survive from their last meeting at Twickenham two years ago, when Ashton blasted into public consciousness with a wonderful length-of-theﬁeld try.

WORLD number one and defending champion Rory McIlroy missed the cut at the Hong Kong Open yesterday after he suffered a nightmare with the putter and double bogeyed his final hole. The U.S PGA champion four-putted the 10th green, his last of the tournament, to cap a frustrating twoover-par 72 round which gave him a total of five-over 145, 14 shots behind leader Michael Campbell. “I had a great start getting it to four under and in a position from which I might have even won the tournament but then it all went on the slide,” Northern Irishman McIlroy told reporters. “Now I am going to work on few things with my putter before playing in Dubai next week,” added the 23-year-old who missed the cut for the first time since the U.S. Open in June. “The wheels came off at the par five eighth, it was a huge momentum breaker,” said McIlroy, who sealed the European Tour’s money list last week with a thirdplace finish in Singapore. The cut was set at two over par. New Zealander Campbell, who has endured a sevenyear slump since winning the U.S Open in 2005, holds a one-shot lead after a second-round 64 that took him to nine under. Daunting San Paolo fortress awaits strugglers By Brian Homewood AC Milan are back in crisis mode after their home defeat by Fiorentina and the last thing they want at the moment is a trip to Napoli’s daunting San Paolo fortress. However, that is exactly what awaits coach Massimiliano Allegri and his struggling team on Saturday night before they travel to Belgium for a potentially decisive Champions League tie against Anderlecht on Wednesday. Napoli have dropped only two points in their six home games in Serie A and won 4-2 at Genoa last week. Milan, meanwhile, were beaten 3-1 by Fiorentina, a result which means they have lost half their 12 league games so far. Former striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic reminded Milan of what they were missing with four goals, including his stunning bicycle kick, for Sweden against England on Wednesday. Ibrahimovic was among the players ofﬂoaded as Milan attempted to slash their wage bill and balance the books in the close season.

The Swede’s striking partner Antonio Cassano and defensive lynchpin Thiago Silva also departed and the Brazilian, now with Ibrahimovic at Paris St Germain, said he was shocked by Milan’s poor start. “It’s difﬁcult to judge from a distance but I have never seen a Milan like this,” Silva told Gazzetta dello Sport this week. “Six defeats in 12 matches just isn’t Milan. I hope they can pick themselves up.” Chief executive Adriano Galliani issued his customary support for the coach after the Fiorentina defeat although alarm bells began ringing when he waited until the following day rather than doing so immediately after the match, as is more usual. “It is obvious that we are not happy,” said Galliani. “We evaluated everything and decided that there’s no guarantee that changing the coach would improve the situation. “We have conﬁrmed Allegri, he has done well in the past two years and this is the decision we have made.” Milan, who had taken seven points from their

previous three games, have dropped to 13th in the table with 14 points, leaving them much closer to bottom club Siena (7) than leaders Juventus (31). Napoli are third with 26 points in yet another impressive season. “We have nine more points compared to this time last season and I am glad to see my team never gives up or stops looking for the victory to the very end,” said coach Walter Mazzarri. “I train an exceptional group of players. There is a real sense of union and we all care about each other.” Leaders Juventus are at home on Saturday evening to ﬁfth-placed Lazio who are fresh from their 3-2 win derby win over AS Roma. Crisis clubs Sampdoria and Genoa meet in their derby on Sunday night when at least one of them will end a run of defeats. Sampdoria are 17th with 10 points after slumping to seven consecutive league defeats, prompting a protest by fans outside the team’s training ground on Wednesday. THE Real Madrid-Barcelona ‘clasico’ is televised around the world and often decides the La Liga title, but a Seville derby is a tougher proposition, Barca defender and former Sevilla favourite Dani Alves has said. Real Betis travel across the Andalucian city to take on neighbours Sevilla on Sunday night for a derby of huge importance locally, and a match of major signiﬁcance in the push for the European places in La Liga. “They may not be as important as a Barca-Real in terms of the quality of players, the spectacle on offer, and the media coverage, but they are passionate games,” Alves was quoted by Spanish media as telling Algerian newspaper Le Buteur. “They are tougher than a ‘Clasico’.” Betis lie fourth in La Liga with 19 points from 11 games, four behind champions Real Madrid in third, and 12 behind unbeaten leaders Barcelona. Most signiﬁcantly for their supporters, however, they

have a four-point advantage over Sevilla in 10th. Betis coach Pepe Mel, a former striker for the club, was refreshingly honest about his enthusiasm for Spain’s most highly-charged city derby. “This week I need to prime Pepe Mel the fan rather than Pepe Mel the professional. My players need someone who is going to add that bit of spice,” he told a news conference. “From outside the city, I can understand people who say it is just another three points. Those who live here know that is not true. The joy we took from winning the last derby there (2-1) has lasted until today.” Sevilla, like Betis, have been inconsistent of late but did beat Real at the Sanchez Pizjuan 1-0 in September, and narrowly lost to Barca 3-2 there conceding two goals in the last few minutes. Sevilla and Betis, along with Qatari-owned Malaga, Levante and Valencia are all lagging behind, leaving Atletico Madrid as the only side really keeping pace with the two Spanish powerhouses.

Atletico, in second with 28 points, returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory at home to Getafe last weekend and travel to take on lowly Granada on Sunday. They are three points behind Barca, who are at home to Real Zaragoza on Saturday night. Tito Vilanova could have Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique back from injury at the centre of defence, but Sergio Busquets is suspended. Real have yet to eat in to Barca’s eight-point advantage over them, but host struggling Athletic Bilbao tonight with midfielder Sami Khedira and striker Karim Benzema back after injury. “It’s an important difference but it isn’t definitive,” Barca defender Gerard Pique told sports daily Mundo Deportivo of their lead over the champions. “I always remember Pep Guardiola’s first year. We had a 12-point gap, we thought we had it in the bag, and we had to go to the Bernabeu and win to prevent them from closing to within a point. Also, Madrid are a stronger team now.”

BAYERN Munich’s sensational domestic season shows no signs of abating and, with a string of players back from injury and illness for this afternoon‘s Bavarian derby at Nuremberg, the team are deservedly eyeing their 11th league win in 12 games. Bayern midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Toni Kroos did not travel with Germany for their friendly match against Netherlands on Wednesday due to illness but were back on the training pitch that same day. Striker Mario Gomez, out of action since undergoing ankle surgery in August, has also returned to team training and his four goals against a regional division team on Tuesday showed he was itching for senior-team action. Despite stiff competition from Bundesliga top scorer Mario Mandzukic and Claudio Pizarro, fresh from a Champions League hattrick, Bayern sports director Matthias Sammer hinted that Gomez could be back in action against Nuremberg. “Obviously Mario needs some time to find his old form but he is healthy and could also help us in the short term,” Sammer told the club website (www. fcbayern.de) on Thursday. Sammer, who replaced Christian Nerlinger in July, has the chance of ending a two-year title drought for the Bavarians who have conceded only four goals while scoring 32, the best offensive and defensive record in the league. Formula One hoping for happy US return By Steve Keating THE eyes of the motor racing world will be riveted on Texas this weekend as Formula One makes its return to the United States but it is unclear if Americans will be watching, even with a driver’s championship on the line. The stage has been set for a Sunday of high-drama worthy of a Hollywood Western as clinical German Sebastian Vettel and fiery Spaniard Fernando Alonso engage in their own version of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral at the new $400 million Circuit of the Americas. The penultimate race in a title chase that has taken the glamour series to the four corners of the globe could well be decided in the distinctly unglamorous scrublands of south Texas, as Formula One tries again to establish a presence in the US following a five-year absence. Vettel, who will be making his 100th career start in Austin, will have an opportunity to complete a hat-trick of titles at the US Grand Prix and join Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio and Germany’s Michael Schumacher as the only drivers to win three titles in a row. “I think we were not always fast enough this year but for the last couple of races we were, so looking forward to the next two races,” said Vettel, cautiously assessing his position following a third-place finish in Abu Dhabi earlier this month. “The fans got the best Formula One for a long time. I personally would have loved it to be a little bit more boring at some stages.” A 27th career win in his Red Bull would move Vettel into a tie with Jackie Stewart on the all-time wins list but it still may not be enough to clinch a championship. Vettel, who tops the standings with 255

points to Alonso’s 245, must finish Sunday’s race with 15 more points than his Spanish rival, which can be produced by many combinations of results. A sixth victory of the season would give Vettel the title if Alonso places outside the top four. Should Alonso fail to score a point, Vettel must still finish at least third. One thing that is certain - the Spaniard will not go down without a fight. Ferrari’s Alonso has stood on the top step of the podium three times this year and will be determined to take the championship down to the final race in Brazil. “I am confident, we will fight until the end,” said Alonso, who would move into a tie for fourth on the all-time win list alongside former-champion Nigel Mansell by notching his 31st career victory. “We are not fast enough, this is true and we are honest with ourselves, we know this. We need to accept this. “We have some strong points which we will try to use.” They like big things in Texas and there is nothing bigger in motor racing than the crowning of a new F1 champion but for many Americans, Vettel and Alonso could just as easily be field goal kickers in the NFL as the world’s leading drivers. There is a good reason their names are not familiar. There has not been an F1 race in the US since 2007 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and there will be no Americans on the starting grid. While Sunday’s race could be the pinnacle of the F1 season, Americans motor sports fans do not view the U.S. Grand Prix with as much anticipation. In Texas, NASCAR is king and it is likely more eyeballs and television remotes will be focused on Homestead, Florida where the Chase championship will also be decided tomorrow.

Arsenal blew a two-goal lead at home to Fulham last weekend, forced to settle for a 3-3 draw after Mikel Arteta’s penalty was saved in the fifth minute of added time. It was the second successive game that Arsenal had failed to win from two goals to the good after surrendering the lead at Schalke in the Champions League. Wenger said his fragile side needed to defend with “more drive and belief” and, according to the Daily Mail, is considering ditching his trusted 4-3-2-1 formation and playing with five defenders to tighten up Arsenal’s leaky defence. Spurs have lost their last two league games at home to Wigan Athletic when they were booed off at White Hart Lane- a defeat described by Villas-Boas as their worst performance of the season - and last weekend at Manchester City. Villas-Boas has a string of injuries to contend with. Right back Kyle Walker, striker Jermain Defoe and winger Aaron Lennon are being assessed after picking up hamstring problems against City, although Spurs are hopeful they will feature.
