Backlash against charity fundraiser Some disabled people say the Radiomarathon should be axed By Poly Pantelides
F
OR THE first time in its 22-year history, an active backlash has emerged against the annual Radiomarathon charity drive for children with special needs, which ended its two-day fundraiser yesterday amid protests in Nicosia and Limassol calling for its abolishment. According to the Pancyprian Organisation for the Blind, the charity perpetuates stereotypes, violates equality principles and facilitates people to assuage their conscience once a year and ignore the disabled during the remaining 51 weeks. In Nicosia’s and Limassol’s main city hubs, a number of protesters gathered signatures yesterday for a petition to abolish the charity event. This year’s 23rd charity drive involves events across the island with 39 kiosks in towns as well as 14 cars collecting donations. Just over €1.0 million was collected said state broadcaster CyBC – one of the Radiomarathon’s sponsors - bringing the money raised since the charity’s inception to €38 million. But blind protester Giorgos Prodromou yesterday asked: “In all these years of the Radiomarathon, have you ever received a flyer on disability, and disabled people’s needs and what they are actually asking from society?” “They talk of ‘special needs’ as if [the needs] are an advantage. We are disabled,” said the president of the Organisation of the Blind, Christakis Nicolaides. He said the Radiomarathon leads people to mistakenly
believe that the problems of disabled people is a charity issue when it’s an issue of society and how it treats the disabled. Arguing that the Radiomarathon philosophy conflates state and for-profit interests, and is based on a patronising portrayal of “special needs” individuals, The Organisation for the Blind has asked the state to cut ties with “an operation organised by a major banking institution [aiming] to showcase social sensitivity”. First Lady Elsi Christofias chairs the charity’s committee which is organised by state broadcaster CyBC and the island’s second biggest lender, Popular Bank. But the Organisation for the Blind – which claims to be backed by other groups representing persons with disabilities – said that it was the state’s place to help and implement policies to integrate them into society. “Persons with disabilities do not seek social pity or exclamations of mock-admiration. They seek policies of equal social inclusion,” they said. “We have asked the CyBC to implement a directive on accessibility for people with visual or hearing disabilities but we were told there’s no money,” Nicolaides said. The protest’s organisers accused CyBC of censoring opposition to the Radiomarathon adding that media outlets presented people with disabilities as “objects of pity”. CyBC’s news director Yiannis Kareklas could not be reached for comment yesterday. The channel did

Grannies ‘helped humans evolve’ By John von Radowitz
British actor Daniel Craig and French actress Berenice Marlohe pose at the royal world premiere of the new James Bond film Skyfall at the Royal Albert Hall in London last night (AFP)
GRANDMOTHERS might have played a key role in human evolution, helping us develop bigger brains and longer lives, say researchers. The “grandmother hypothesis” says there are evolutionary benefits from having older, non-reproductive females caring for offspring. Scientists tested the theory by running computer simulations of many generations of chimpanzees. In the real world, female chimps rarely live past their child-bearing years, usually dying in their 30s or 40s. But when grandmothering was added to the virtual world of the computer simulation, it made a huge difference to evolving chimp lifespan. After 24,000 to 60,000 years of grandmothers caring for grandchildren, chimpanzees who reached adulthood lived another 49 years - as do human hunter gatherers. Before the addition of grandmothers, the simulated animals lived only another 25 years after reaching adulthood, just like chimps do in the wild. According to the hypothesis, when grandmothers help feed their grandchildren after weaning, their daughters can produce more children at shorter intervals. The children become younger at weaning but older when they start feeding themselves and reach adulthood. Because of the benefits of grandmothers helping with childrearing, females end up living long after they lose the ability to reproduce.

By Stefanos Evripidou THE APPOINTMENT of Andreas Kyriacou as deputy police chief ensures President Demetris Christofias will leave a “non-meritocratic and scandalous legacy” behind, said Chairman of the House Legal Affairs Committee Ionas Nicolaou yesterday. Christofias appointed chief superintendent Kyriacou as deputy police chief, replacing Andreas Iatropoulou who has retired, in an official ceremony at the presidential palace yesterday. DISY deputy Nicolaou accused Christofias of provocatively adopting a ‘jobs for the boys’ mindset, with the sole criteria for getting one being devotion to Christofias and his leadership. Through Kyriacou’s appointment, Christofias was leaving behind the “most non-meritocratic and scandalous legacy”, said Nicolaou. The DISY deputy accused Christofias of ignoring around 15 more senior and experienced officers, some with masters degrees, to appoint Kyriacou, who allegedly has no university degree. Nicolaou further argued that “Mr Christofias’ favoured candidate enjoyed six promotions since 2003”, tripling his wage from €2,856 to €8,400 a month. According to yesterday’s Phileleftheros, Kyriacou’s appointment caused
consternation among a number of senior officers who were likely overlooked for the job. The paper said some senior officers find him too young and inexperienced for the job, noting that he will have the position until 2024 when he is due to retire, unless he is promoted to police chief. Kyriacou, 49, from Larnaca entered the force in 1982 as a 19-year-old youth. According to his resume released by the police, he served in various police stations in Larnaca and in a number of services that are not specified. More recently, he served as head of the presidential guard while two months ago he was appointed head of the central intelligence service. Speaking at yesterday’s ceremony, Christofias said through his appointment, the state invests in the “accumulated experience and high sense of responsibility, dedication and diligence that distinguishes him”. The president described him as a “mature person with education and a significant academic background” who has risen up the ranks. “I believe that new professionals like Mr Kyriacou can qualitatively enhance further the police force and raise it higher in the minds of citizens,” said Christofias, adding that the key to success for the force is to embed a sense of meritocracy in the ranks.

Decision on energy centre by month’s end By George Psyllides THE GOVERNMENT will decide at the end of the month on the strategic investor who will undertake the construction of the island’s energy centre, it emerged yesterday. Trade ministry permanent secretary Zeta Emilianidou rejected lawmakers’ suggestions that the process has been delayed, saying it was close to the end. “I believe the evaluation committee will have its final decision on October 29,” Emilianidou said. The decision will then be submitted to the ministerial committee handling the matter, which will decide whether to adopt it. The matter was tabled for discussion by Larnaca MPs concerned over the delays in moving fuel storage facilities from Dhekelia. “Three governments and six ministers continue to mock Larnaca,” opposition DISY MP Zacharias Zachariou said. He said the facilities not only posed a safety hazard but also
The VTT terminal underway at Vassilikos blocked any development in the area. Zachariou said the state had two choices: either to move the tanks or move the residents. The decision to construct the energy centre that will house a fuel terminal was taken in 2004 with the basic plan completed two years later. In 2003 the government decided to close a fuel refinery
located in Dhekelia, which according to George Lillikas, who was trade minister at the time, would act as a fuel import terminal until a new energy centre at Vassilikos was completed by 2008. The government’s pledge at the time was to move the terminal by 2010. Apart from the old refinery installation, the area is also home to storage
tanks belonging to fuel companies. These would also have to move. AKEL deputy Giorgos Georgiou said he hoped fuel companies would be prepared to cooperate when discussing the cost of moving. Based on older agreements, Georgiou said, it was the companies who must shoulder the cost of moving to Vassilikos. A private company, VTT, is already constructing a terminal at Vassilikos, which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2014. It will initially have the capacity to store 357,000 cubic metres of oil (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, gasoil and mazut), then as the second phase of the project is complete, it will have a 643,000 cubic metre capacity. The facilities will include a marine jetty with four berths. The jetty will extend offshore for 1,200m and will include two loading arms per berth per product, capable of loading/discharging 1250 m³/h per product. VTT is one of two companies contesting for the energy centre project.

Home BA closing down Cyprus call centre BRITISH AIRWAYS (BA) will close down its call centre in Cyprus by March 2013 as part of a money-saving restructuring programme, which will result in the loss of 11 jobs. Freddie Stier, BA Commercial Manager for Greece and Cyprus said: “The decision was dictated solely by economic and commercial considerations related to our need to be cost competitive on a global basis. It in no way reflects on our Nicosia team’s performance. We will be offering affected staff every support going forward.” By March next year, customers will still be able to call a local number for customer service or reservations, which will be redirected to Flyline, a company in Bremen, Germany. “British Airways remains 100 per cent committed to its Cyprus operations and to delivering a successful growth business,” said Stier. She highlighted that the highly competitive nature of the airline industry meant business practice remains under constant review to deliver productivity savings and optimise operational efficiency. BA offices, including agent sales and accounts, will remain in Cyprus.
Backlash against annual Radiomarathon collection The yearly drive fosters discrimination and inequality say protestors continued from page one not cover yesterday’s protests by the anti-Radiomarathon demonstrators. Asked if they received money from the Radiomarathon themselves, Nicolaides said they did not, but added their gripe was about humiliating references such as ‘poor children who need help’. “It’s demeaning,” he said. “The state uses the charity to justify its own weaknesses regarding funding and covering the rightful needs of persons with disabilities.” Cyprus ratified the Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities in June 2011 which lays out principles of non-discrimination, dignity, inclusion and participation and accessibility. The Radiomarathon violates those principles because it fosters discrimination and inequality, Nicolaides said. Across from the protest on Nicosia’s Makarios Avenue was the Radiomarathon’s flagship kiosk where the charity’s organiser, Loucas Christofides said they do not promote pity or exclusion. “We promote charity”.
Shacolas victory over sales law THE Supreme Court ruled yesterday that the Cypriot law regulating sales, restricts the right to sell goods at discount prices outside the set time periods and was in violation of the relevant EU directive. The Court ruled on an appeal filed by the Shacolas Group against a district court decision finding it in violation of the sales law. In a statement the company said the Supreme Court has repealed the group’s only conviction. In the unanimous decision, the Supreme Court upheld the company’s position that the scope of the sales law was to protect consumers, not businesses, as the state had argued. “The sale of goods at discount prices without time restrictions is not banned by the European directive which, on the contrary, prohibits member states from introducing and keeping in force legal measures that are stricter than the ones in the directive...” the company said.

The institution has grown and now refers to children with ‘health problems’ and not ‘special needs’, he said. Christofides, who works for the Popular Bank, said the money that is collected goes to a committee, which distributes funds under the auspices of the state’s general accountant. Christofides did concede that money is distributed to people on an individual application basis and with no great master plan in mind. But he said that applications are assessed “in conjunction with state mechanisms such as social welfare”. “We have helped 32,769 children up until now. We want to help thousands more,” he said. Meanwhile, Radiomarathon volunteers yesterday stopped cars to ask for donations, with some drivers keeping their windows shut or else sticking a Radiomarathon voucher on their windshield wipers to show they had already contributed. The €1.2 million collected by yesterday evening fell short of the €2.0 million collected last year.
Deputies propose freezing medical school funding By Jacqueline Agathocleous THE HOUSE Education Committee yesterday decided to send to the Plenum a law proposal to freeze supplementary funds for the University of Cyprus’ (UCY) Medical School, despite reactions by ruling AKEL and university. The proposal was tabled by Committee Chairman, DISY’s Nicos Tornaritis, and MPs Athena Kyriakidou (DIKO) and EVROKO’s Demetris Syllouris. Speaking after the meeting, Tornaritis said UCY was six months late presenting parliament with its supplementary budget for the
medical school. “We said that for every payment, any action taken by the university and the government, parliament should be informed,” said Tornaritis after the meeting. “We are experiencing some difficult times and every Cypriot taxpayer’s euro needs to be handled with full respect.” Tornaritis said the university still needed to open the necessary positions, choose and appoint the academics, so the university could receive its first 40 students by September 2013. “This cannot happen by any reasonable calculation,” said Tornaritis.
When asked if the school would be ready to start accepting its first students next September, UCY Rector Costas Christofides said there were certain factors to take into account, “but we are doing whatever we can to make the September 2013 deadline”. He said the school’s annual cost in 2020, when it is expected to be fully functional, would be roughly €7 million a year. “This is a small amount, if anyone takes into account that it costs around €7million to build one kilometre of road,” said Christofides. He underlined the financial benefits the state stood to gain through the school’s opera-
tion, as the majority of EU funds are directed towards research and health. “Parliament must help the university develop the school,” said Christofides. UCY Chairman Charis Charalambous was equally unimpressed. “This new development of having funds approved fragmentarily has blighted the university’s operations,” said Charalambous. He sent a plea to parliamentarians to release the necessary funds for the medical school, warning them that if there were delays in looking for academics, it may prove difficult to appoint them in time for the new academic year.

Home Meetings being held in New York on future of Cyprus issue By Stefanos Evripidou UN OFFICIALS have held several meetings in New York in the last two days to discuss the future of the frozen Cyprus peace negotiations. Ruling AKEL and former coalition partner DIKO yesterday warned the UN against taking decisions that aim to bind the next president of the Cyprus Republic. According to Cyprus News Agency (CNA), UN Special Adviser Alexander Downer and Special Representative Lisa Buttenheim flew to UN headquarters in New York to hold meetings yesterday and Monday on Cyprus. A UN official told the news agency that no substantial changes are expected in the peace talks until after the presidential elections in Cyprus next February. However, the UN wanted to take a look at where things
stand and what may happen after the elections. “These are internal meetings and there is not something else beyond that,” said the official. Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman was also due to attend the meetings. Diplomatic sources told CNA that the meetings would almost certainly entail discussions on the document being prepared by the UN listing the whole range of convergences and divergences recorded in the last four years of peace talks. According to the same sources, the document was due to be submitted by late October but will now be delayed slightly. During his stay in New York, Downer will meet with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and representatives of the interested parties to the Cyprus problem. Reports suggest the aim of the document is to clarify the basis of negotiations and lock in what has already
been agreed, leaving the rest for negotiation under a new Greek Cypriot leadership next year. AKEL leader Andros Kyprianou said yesterday that any convergences recorded by the UN will not bind the next president of the Cyprus Republic. DIKO spokesman Fotis Fotiou repeated his party’s view that it does not accept any codification of convergences that will commit the next president of Cyprus. Some fear that the UN is trying to use the prospect of exploiting hydrocarbon resources in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone as a carrot and stick for both sides, nudging them towards reunification and joint use of resources. Peace talks between Christofias and Eroglu halted before the summer with the Turkish Cypriot leader refusing to engage in high-level talks during Cyprus’ EU presidency.
‘Duped investors to be discussed with the troika’ Deputies told that securities were part of banking sector’s recapitalisation talks By Jacqueline Agathocleous THE ISSUE of the investors who claimed they were duped by the island’s two biggest banks into buying high-risk securities will be discussed with international lenders – the troika – during the bailout negotiations for a bailout, parliament was told yesterday. Finance ministry representative Dionysis Dionysiou told deputies at the House Institutions Committee this was because the securities were considered part of the banking sector’s recapitalisation chapter. But he dodged questions related to the government’s position, and whether the issue had been included in the package of measures sent to the troika – the European Central Bank, European Commission and International Monetary Fund – on Monday night. “The securities issue is included in the section on the banks’ recapitalisation; they are considered a chapter of the banks,” said Dionysiou. Reports suggested the discussions were heated at times, especially when depu-
ties pressed representatives of the two banks – Popular Bank and the Bank of Cyprus (BoC). While the meeting was going on, investors staged a protest outside the parliament building while a small delegation was allowed to attend the session. The Central Bank (CB) representative Michalis Stylianou told MPs that the aim of their probe into the allegations was to see whether investors were misled by bank staff into investing in the securities. “The results (of the investigation) have been sent to the Attorney-general, who will decide whether there are criminal responsibilities,” said Stylianou. At first view, Stylianou said it appeared there was an organised effort by the banks to approach shareholders, depositors and securities holders. He said it also seemed that the investors had received “biased information” from bank employees over the phone, who informed them only on the positive aspects of investing in the securities. The CB report concluded that advice was given by

the two banks, in violation of provisions of the law for Investment Services and Activities, as well as a CB directive on banks’ professional behaviour, when providing investment or ancillary services. The ruling concerned securities issued by Popular in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, as well as by the BoC in 2009 and 2011. The law provides administrative fines of up to €375,000 if violated. It was said during the discussion that the possibility of apportioning criminal responsibility would be looked into, though Attorney-general Petros Clerides pointed out: “No one will get their money back with criminal prosecutions as criminal prosecutions are made to impose punishment.” The probe was ordered after it recently transpired that the island’s two largest lenders - in need of a bailout - collectively accumulated €1.4 billion in securities but stopped paying interest on them after making significant losses in the wake of a Greek sovereign debt writedown. The banks closed access to capital, affecting some 8,000 people. Dionysiou said the banks were given until Friday to respond to the CB’s findings, before administrative fines are imposed. Popular Bank representative Michalis Athanasiou said the CB report was be-

they were making profits. But he said he wanted to make it clear that the advisers themselves did not receive any financial benefits. Yet AG Clerides noted that there were some “irrationally high salaries” included in the CB report. “There is no longer any doubt that the banks deceived people,” said the head of the affected investors’ association, Phivos Mavrovouniotis. “This should be used by the government
in its negotiations with the troika.” But he wondered how it was possible for a product of illegitimacy to be officially negotiated on. He repeated the association’s proposal for the banks to offer the duped investors loans equivalent to the amounts of the securities, so that state coffers were not affected. Mavrovouniotis said if the problem was not resolved, dynamic measures would be taken, including lawsuits against the banks.

Home Island’s banks insolvent ‘on an intergalactic scale’ says ex Moody’s boss A FORMER vice chairman of Moody’s has said he believes Cyprus could be the first country to exit the eurozone, given the island’s anti-austerity government. In his blog on Monday on the respected Project Syndicate website, Christopher T Mahoney called Cyprus “an economic, financial and political mess, worse than Greece, and it may not be too big to fail”. “I think that the first country to exit the eurozone may be Cyprus, and soon,” said Mahoney. Mahoney said he had been following the Cyprus situation closely because Cyprus “seems like the most scary sovereign credit in the eurozone” “Cyprus has always had a powerful communist party, and it has always had a bit of an anti-western orientation,” he said, referring to the AKEL government of Demetris Christofias. He also said Cypriot banks were never in terrific condition, given the nature of the Cyprus economy and the close relationship with Greece which has never been the “land of good loans”. He said Cypriot banks were insolvent “on an intergalactic scale”. “One of the banks’ deadbeats is reportedly AKEL itself. Just don’t ask,” writes Mahoney.
BIGGEST BAILOUT “There is indeed an irony in that Cyprus needs a bailout from Big Capital at a time when it is led by a communist, and that the EU, which is trying to figure out a way to bailout Cyprus, is headed by...Cyprus. But that’s not the problem. “The problem is that Cyprus’ government, both president and parliament, are not cooperating with the troika. Greece has learned to go through the motions of cooperation, agreeing to preposterous conditions it has no intention of implementing. Cyprus, by contrast, isn’t agreeing to any of the troika’s demands,” he added.. “Cyprus needs the biggest bailout in the history of sovereign credit (100% of GDP), will run out of money next month, and yet continues to stonewall the troika, not only in private but also in public. “It is just awfully hard to sell austerity when you are the anti-austerity party.” Mahoney said he believes Europe has many good reasons to want to get Cyprus over with in order to focus on Greece and Spain. “But there are still those two big hurdles: agreement to the austerity plan by Cyprus’ government and political parties; and approval by the German and Finnish parliaments. “None of those will be automatic or even easy,” he said.
No date yet for troika’s return European Commission confirms it has received counter proposals from Cyprus By George Psyllides
Troika will come back when it’s feasible, Commission says
THE European Commission said yesterday it had received Cyprus’ counter proposals on the bailout adjustment programme and would announce a date for the start of negotiations when it was ready. “We received the new proposals from the Cypriot authorities. We will examine them in detail,” the Commission’s economic and monetary Affairs spokesperson Simon O`Connor said. He said the Commission was not yet ready to announce the date for the return of the troika to Cyprus, adding that the date would be announced as soon as it became feasible. “I will be happy to announce the date when we will be ready,” O’Connor said. After almost three months since the troika had submitted its proposals, the government finally sent its response on Tuesday in a bid to get on with the negotiations ahead of a November 12 deadline. Cyprus’ proposals include
spending cuts worth around €670 million and some €310 million in revenues. The government wants a fouryear adjustment period instead of the three the troika wants. The package does not include cutting the 13th salary or scrapping the wage indexation system, as troika had recommended. The package was prepared after a series of meetings between the government and the social partners – unions, employers’ organisations and parties. Cyprus applied for assistance on June 25 to support its banking sector that was battered during the Greek bond write-down. The largest chunk of the aid will be used to recapitalise the banks though an official figure has not been announced yet. Central Bank Governor Panicos Demetriades said yesterday that the recapitalisation and reform of the banking sector should take place as soon as possible so that it regained its role as the steam engine of growth. In a speech in Limassol, Demetriades took a shot at bankers and their practices.
“The bankers that brought the system to its current condition are not the best advisors regarding the ways it should be reformed,” he said. “When a bank posts huge profits but at the same time hides many large bad debts in its balance sheet without having the necessary provisions the real economy suffers. “This lender’s ability to finance businesses and households continuously declines since more money is channelled to hide the sins of the past.” Demetriades also commented on the other part of the adjustment programme, saying it should include a reliable fiscal consolidation strategy with an emphasis on spending cuts and taxes that will not affect viable growth that will mainly come from Cypriot business. Demetriades acknowledged that the challenges faced by the Cypriot economy were unprecedented but can be overcome. “We can tackle these challenges,” he said. “Reversing the current negative economic climate is not easy but neither it is unfeasible.”

Hermes airports’ CEO, Alfred van der Meer. He thanked the tourist industry players “for a very close and constructive collaboration without whom this result would not have been possible”.

Paphos hospice expands its chain of charity shops Around 500 people have been cared for at the hospice By Bejay Browne THE mayor of Paphos officially opened the town’s fourth Paphos Friends hospice charity shop over the weekend and praised the hospice for making a difference to the terminally ill of all nationalities. “By being part of this team, you are contributing to a really worthwhile cause which makes a difference to the lives of people of many nationalities in the city, when and where they need it the most,” said Savvas Vergas as he inaugurated the outlet. The mayor promised a donation of €500 to the charity on top of the municipality’s annual grant to the hospice from its social fund. “This charity shop raises money for a noble cause but it also encourages all of us to give,” he said. “I believe we owe special thanks to those who have made this possible the volunteers and all of those who have donated goods.” The Friends hospice is cur-

rently the only operational hospice in Paphos and is situated in a special wing of the Evangelismos hospital. Since opening in 2006, the facility has grown and now consists of a seven bed unit which is solely run by donations, money raised by the shops and fundraising events. Around 500 people have been cared for at the hospice which provides palliative care for people suffering with life limiting illness and support for them and their families. The hospice figures show an average occupancy of 70 per cent with most patients being Cypriot. Julia Search, the chairperson of the Friends Hospice Support Group, told the Cyprus Mail: “We are still looking to receive donations of goods and also for volunteers to enable us to extend our opening hours.” The shop will initially be open Monday to Friday from 10am-2pm. “Even if people have just a few hours a week to spare, we would be grateful,” said Search, who says there are currently around 100 volunteers manning all four shops. Goods such as clothing for men, women and children, as well as bric a brac, books and furniture DVDs, CDs and jewellery items are urgently needed. And as the new shop has adequate storage facilities

Action plan needed to battle homophobia By Jacqueline Agathocleous LESBIAN, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Cyprus still suffer homophobia, discrimination and even acts of violence, according to a 2010-2011 study by the Cyprus Family Planning Association, and the organisation Accept LGBT. The study, presented to the House Human Rights Committee yesterday, focused on LGBT people’s experiences, how they are perceived, whether they are accepted in their surrounding environment, and whether they suffer discrimination or homophobia in areas such as education, state services, the family or workforce. According to Margarita Kapsou, the association’s chairwoman, discrimination was seen at all levels – some mild but some extremely serious, including beatings, homophobic attacks and rapes. Of those asked, 83 per cent of LGBT
people said they suffered discrimination at least once from state services, due to their sexual orientation. Furthermore, not one of the 136 participants reported the incident officially. Kapsou said this was due to the lack of structure and procedures for complaints to be filed, but also the fact that LGBT fear their personal details may not remain confidential. The committee discussed ways of better regulating the matter. LGBT Cyprus’ vice president, Despina Michaelidou, said ways were needed to deal with and prevent violent behaviour against LGBT persons. She called for special programmes to be included in the education system. But most of all the organisation is seeking legal regulations so that crimes based on sexual orientation and gender identity can be punishable. Michaelidou also relayed a request for gay partnerships to be recognised, so as to end discrimination between homosexual and heterosexual couples. She said

this could either happen through civil unions or civil weddings. DISY deputy Stella Kyriakidou said measures were demanded. “The only way to deal with this correctly is through a national action plan against homophobia, which will lead to taking the correct measures, in all sectors,” said Kyriakidou. She also called for an investigation by the state to see the extent of the problem and announced she would formally ask the justice ministry whether it planned to create an action plan. Ruling AKEL’s Stella Mishaouli said the European Commission had asked Cyprus to sign the treaty for same-sex couples’ partnerships. She said eight EU states allow civil marriages between gay couples, while another 14 have regulated cohabitation rights. Mishaouli added that the education ministry should issue regulations, banning any form of discrimination against teenagers with different sexual preferences.
CHINESE company Far Eastern Phoenix (FEP) must give a final answer early next month on whether it plans to invest in the old Larnaca airport building, according to a report compiled by the ad hoc committee in charge of the issue. The committee also said the relevant contract would span a 19-year period, as opposed to the 50-year contract FEP was seeking. Accountant General Rea Georgiou yesterday informed the House Watchdog Committee on the committee’s report, saying the investor’s initial proposal for the project was “problematic”. “The ad hoc committee said it lacked seriousness,” said Georgiou. However, some lawmakers deemed the report “biased”, as it referred to distortions that would be created on the market from Chinese products that would be promoted through the investment. A spokesman for the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA) described the situation as “an autopsy, when we should be looking at whether the patient could have lived”. “If I was an investor, I would never come near Cyprus again, after hearing all these doubts,” said the CIPA spokesman. Also present at the meeting was Communications Minister Efthymios Flourentzos, who said FEP’s proposal for a 50-year contract was examined in co-operation with the legal services. “We concluded that the investment could not span 50 years, as the company requested, because it’s initial expression of interest was lacklustre,” said Flourentzos. He said the state’s proposal was for a 19-year contract. “We are simply looking into alternative ways to implement the proposed project within this timeframe,” he added. FEP is now expected to answer by early next month whether it accepts the 19-year contract. Hermes Airports, the company managing Cyprus’ airports, and FEP had concluded a deal that could yield a €600 million benefit for Cyprus. The intended investment concerned developing the old Larnaca airport into a large commercial showroom, bonded warehouses for Chinese goods as well as a small conference centre.
New judge appointed to the Supreme Court JUDGE LEONIDAS Parparinos was welcomed as the latest member to the Supreme Court yesterday in a special ceremony at the Presidential Palace. Congratulating the judge on his appointment, President Demetris Christofias said the judiciary has a very important role to play during this difficult time where the global economic crisis is threatening to undermine the welfare state and disrupt the social fabric of society. Parparinos, who has served 24 years as a judge, said it was his conviction that no matter how high a judge climbs, they should never
be too far removed from the society which they are there to serve. The Supreme Court is composed of 13 judges, including its president. The Supreme Court plays has a number of jurisdictions, including to hear and determine all appeals from lower courts in civil and criminal matters, to hear any recourse filed against a decision, act or omission of any person, organ or authority exercising executive or administrative authority, and to examine the constitutionality of any law or any conflict of power or competence which arises between any organs or authorities of the Republic.

‘We let Savile get away with abuse’ Prime minister says BBC has questions to answer By Michael Holden and Kate Holton THE head of the BBC yesterday denied helping to cover up sexual abuse by one of its former stars but accepted the British broadcaster had been damaged by a scandal that has shaken public trust in a national institution. George Entwistle, who was announced as the 90-year-old media organisation’s new boss in August, told hostile lawmakers that failures at the BBC had allowed Jimmy Savile, once one of Britain’s top TV presenters, to prey on young girls for years. He added he could not rule out suggestions that a paedophile ring might have existed at the state-funded BBC during the height of Savile’s fame in the 1970s and 80s. But Entwistle rejected claims that BBC bosses had tried to hide allegations against Savile, who died last year, or suppressed an inquiry by one of their own news programmes. “This is a gravely serious matter and one cannot look back at it with anything other than horror,” Entwistle told parliament’s Culture and Media Committee. “There is no question that... the culture and practices of the BBC seemed to allow Jimmy Savile to do what he did, (which) will raise questions of trust for us and reputation for us.” Police are investigating allegations that the eccentric, cigar-chomping Savile, who hosted prime-time children’s shows on the BBC, abused girls as young as 12 over six decades, with some of the at-
tacks taking place on BBC premises. Detectives announced a criminal inquiry into the claims on Friday, saying more than 200 potential victims had come forward. The BBC, which holds a special place in Britons’ affection and is paid for by a tax on viewers, has been under growing pressure since rival channel ITV exposed Savile’s alleged crimes three weeks ago. Prime Minister David Cameron said on Monday the BBC appeared to have serious questions to answer. The most damaging aspect for Entwistle and senior managers was the accusation that a similar probe by the BBC’s flagship Newsnight show was pulled a couple of months after Savile’s death in October 2011 because it would clash with planned Christmas programmes celebrating his life and charity work.
INACCURATE Newsnight’s editor, Peter Rippon, stepped aside on Monday after the BBC said his explanation for shelving the story had been “inaccurate or incomplete”, and Entwistle said Rippon had been wrong not to broadcast the report. But he added: “I’ve been able to find no evidence whatsoever in the conversations I’ve had, and in the documents we’ve now pulled together, that any kind of managerial pressure to drop the investigation was applied.” At the time of the Newsnight probe, Entwistle was in charge of BBC television’s commissioning and programming, and admitted the Head of News had briefly
told him about it in December and that he might have to change the Christmas schedules, which included Savile tributes. His failure to ask more questions about the Newsnight inquiry was ridiculed by some of the lawmakers, with one saying he showed a lamentable lack of knowledge. Entwistle admitted the BBC had taken longer to address the growing crisis than it should have but had been at pains to avoid causing any damage to the police investigation. “We have done much of what we should have done,” he said, explaining he had ordered two independent reviews. Asked if it was likely that sexual abuse of children and young women had been widespread at the BBC, he said: “I don’t yet have enough of a picture to know whether it was endemic.” He revealed the corporation is now investigating up to 10 “serious allegations” involving past and present employees over the “Savile period” and described the Jim’ll Fix It star as a “skilful and successful sexual predator who covered his tracks”. Former colleagues have come forward to say there had been rumours for years involving young girls and Savile, famous for his garish outfits and long blonde hair. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth for his extensive charity work. Other BBC employees have talked of a culture at the corporation where women were groped and have hinted that Savile was not the only household name to have been involved.

World WORLD TODAY Racist attacks RACIALLY motivated attacks have risen to alarming levels in Greece and authorities are doing little to tackle the problem, the UN refugee agency said in a report yesterday. Greece is a major gateway for mostly Asian and African migrants trying to enter the European Union and immigrants face growing hostility as the debt-laden country goes through its worst economic downturn in six decades. The agency said 87 racist attacks were recorded by rights and migrant groups between January and September this year, calling the results “exceptionally alarming”. Actual numbers were likely to be far higher since victims were either too scared to report attacks to the police or turned away, it said.
Protest ban KUWAIT banned gatherings of more than 20 people and gave police more powers to disperse protests, local media reported yesterday, in an escalating standoff with the opposition ahead of the December 1 election. Kuwait has been on edge since the emir ordered changes to the election law in a move condemned by the opposition as an attempt to undermine their chances in the vote. The opposition will boycott the poll and has called for protests.
Disney princess sparks a race row DISNEY has had to defend its latest cartoon princess after critics said the Hispanic-based character was not an accurate racial portrayal. The new character, Sofia, is in a TV movie being shown in the US next month on the Disney Channel and Disney Junior. Hispanic pressure groups have questioned whether the fair-skinned, blue-eyed young princess is an accurate representation of the Hispanic population and wondered why Disney is not doing more to promote its first princess with Hispanic-inspired roots. “They seem to be backpedalling said Lisa Navarrete, spokeswoman for the National Council of La Raza. “They’ve done such a good job in the past when they’ve introduced Native American, African-American and Asian princesses. They made a big deal out of it, and there was a lot of fanfare, but now they’re sort of scrambling. It’s unusual because Disney has been very good about Latino
diversity.” Craig Gerber, co-executive producer of Sofia the First, said Sofia is “a mixed-heritage princess in a fairytale world.” He said her mother and birth father respectively hail from kingdoms inspired by Spain and Scandinavia, though Sofia was born and raised in Enchancia, a “make-believe ‘melting pot’ kingdom” patterned after the British Isles. Sofia is voiced by Caucasian Modern Family actress Ariel Winter, and her mother is played by Hispanic Grey’s Anatomy actress Sara Ramirez. The film and a subsequent TV series will follow the young princess as she adjusts to royal life after her mother marries the king of Enchancia. “Sofia considers herself a normal Enchancian girl like any other,” said Gerber. “Her mixed heritage and blended family are a reflection of what many children today experience.”
Army says gunmen agree truce in Lebanon’s Tripoli Order restored in Beirut although political crisis continues to seethe By Oliver Holmes THE Lebanese army arranged a ceasefire yesterday in the northern city of Tripoli after two nights of fighting between Sunni and Alawite gunmen loyal to different sides in the war in neighbouring Syria, a military source said. At least 10 people have been killed and 65 wounded in clashes in Tripoli despite a heavy deployment of troops backed by tanks and armoured personnel carriers. In the capital Beirut, life was getting back to normal after soldiers swept though the city on Monday to dismantle barricades and clear the streets of gunmen who had clashed on Sunday night. The violence flared after Friday’s assassination in central Beirut of senior Lebanese security official, Wissam al-Hassan, who had worked to counter Syrian influence in Lebanon. The car bombing and ensuing clashes brought the civil war in Syria into the heart of Lebanon and triggered a political crisis, with the opposition demanding the resignation of the mostly proDamascus cabinet of Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
Nigeria arrests NIGERIAN authorities seized a ship and arrested its 15 Russian crew members on suspicion of arms smuggling, after they found several guns and about 8,500 rounds of ammunition on the boat, the Navy said yesterday. The vessel was intercepted over the weekend in Lagos, one of Africa’s busiest ports, Navy spokesman Commodore Aliyu Kabiru said by telephone. It belonged to the Moran Security Group, based in Moscow, and was flying a Dutch flag, he added. There was no immediate comment from Moran.
Drugs haul TURKISH police seized five tonnes of marijuana with a street value of at least $2 million near the border with Iran yesterday and officials said they were investigating the involvement of Kurdish militants. Turkish security sources say drug trafficking is a major source of income for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which took up arms 28 years ago with the aim of carving out a Kurdish state in the south eastern border region with Iran and Iraq.
Inez Gonzalez, executive vice ce president of the National Hispanic c Media Coalition, said that the organisation nisation wanted to meet Disney to discuss scuss Sofia the First. “Sofia’s world reflects the ethnithnically diverse world we live in,, but it is not our world,” said Nancy y Kanter, senior vice president of original nal programming for Disney Junior. “It is a fairytale and storybook world d that we hope will help spur a child’s d’s imagination. It’s one where we can have flying horses, schools ols led by fairies, songs that have e a Latin beat and towns with markets like those found in North Africa.” Over the past two decades, Disney has introduced such culturally diverse female protagonists as Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Merida and Tiana, the African-Amerrican princess from 2009’s Prinncess and the Frog.

The fighting in Tripoli took place between the neighbouring areas of Bab al-Tabbaneh, a Sunni Muslim stronghold, and Jebel Mohsen, an Alawite district. Residents said combatants had traded machinegun-fire and rocket-propelled grenades after nightfall and snipers were active during the day. A military source said that after talks with the army yesterday both sides had agreed to a halt in the hostilities. However, as evening fell residents reported hearing occasional gunfire.
ARRESTS The army said in a statement it had arrested 100 people since Sunday, including 34 Syrians and four Palestinians, in a security operation aimed at getting guns off the streets. It said soldiers had raided properties in Beirut and Tripoli where gunmen were sheltering and seized weapons. Fifteen members of the security forces had been wounded by gunfire. Yesterday, soldiers backed by tanks and armoured vehicles were stationed in the streets of Tripoli, which has suffered several previous bouts of fighting since the Syrian conflict started 19
months ago. But at the front line, they merely looked on as teenaged fighters carrying assault rifles ran up and down the streets. Tripoli’s Sunni Muslims support the Syrian rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, who are mostly from Syria’s Sunni majority. Opposition politicians have accused Syria of being behind Friday’s killing of Brigadier General Hassan, an opponent of the Damascus leadership. A Sunni Muslim, Hassan helped to uncover a bomb plot that led to the arrest and indictment in August of a pro-Assad former Lebanese minister. He also led an investigation that implicated Syria and Hezbollah in the 2005 assassination of Rafik al-Hariri, a former prime minister of Lebanon. Visiting European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton met Lebanese political leaders in Beirut yesterday and stressed the importance of political and social reforms. She also warned of the dangers of a weak state. “At such times, the importance of robust state institutions that continue to provide security and services cannot be overstated,” she told reporters before leaving.
UN set to feed 1.5m Syrians till mid-2013

THE World Food Programme (WFP) said yesterday it plans to continue providing food for 1.5 million people in Syria until at least June next year, a sign it expects hunger to persist in a protracted civil war. The United Nations agency set the target of 1.5 million months ago and finally reached it in September, after managing to deliver food supplies to just 850,000 people in August. “It is a record amount,” Daly Belgasmi, WFP regional director for the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia and Eastern Europe said. Belgasmi said the WFP planned to continue distributing to 1.5 million hungry civilians until mid-2013 under a fresh UN humanitarian
appeal due to be launched in January. “What we see today is that it is a crisis that threatens to last,” he told a news briefing. The WFP had no information on the Syrian government’s food security stocks, but fuel for cooking and heating “may be an issue” this winter for many residents. “In the case of Syria, the market looks stable inside. You can go and see oil, vegetables, onions, tomatoes - for how long we don’t have a real indication,” Belgasmi said. But some areas remain cut off to aid workers due to fighting between Syrian government forces and armed militants locked in a 19-month conflict.

Obama: election a matter of trust Polls show President won final debate By Jeff Mason PRESIDENT Barack Obama told voters yesterday that Republican rival Mitt Romney shifts his policy positions and cannot be trusted to deal honestly with the public as the presidential campaign entered its frantic final weeks. After three televised debates that have boosted Romney’s standing in opinion polls before the November 6 election, Obama delivered what is likely to be his closing argument: that, unlike Romney, he has been honest with voters about his plans to deliver a broadly shared prosperity over the next four years. “There is no more serious issue in a presidential campaign than trust,” Obama told a rally of 11,000 people in Florida. “Everything he’s doing right now is trying to hide his real positions in order to win this election.” That argument was laid out by Obama in Monday night’s debate with repeated accusations that Romney has shifted numerous policy positions since the Republican presidential primaries, when he was targeting his party’s conservative base. Obama unveiled a glossy booklet outlining his secondterm agenda, which will serve as an important prop for his massive grassroots network. The campaign said it will print 3.5 million copies for volunteers to distribute to friends and relatives and hand out in
Neck-a-neck: US President Barack Obama (left) and Republican rival Mitt Romney during the debate door-knocking campaigns. The booklet contains no new proposals, but could help rebut what Romney aides say will be their campaign’s central message in the weeks to come: that the country cannot afford another four years of an Obama presidency because he has no plan to fix the sluggish economy. Romney allies said Obama’s aggressive performance in Monday’s debate underscored his lack of new ideas. “What we got from President Obama were mostly attacks on Mitt Romney. That’s not an agenda,” Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan said on ABC’s Good Morning America. In their final showdown, Obama accused the former
Massachusetts governor of a reckless and inconsistent approach to international affairs. Romney played down his disagreements with the president as he sought to present a reassuring image to a war-weary public. Voters polled after the debate said Obama dominated the exchange, an assessment shared by many political observers. However, Romney avoided gaffes that would disqualify him in the eyes of voters and emerged from the three debates with an energised base, a full war chest and a sense of momentum. Most importantly, nearly half the electorate now sees him as a plausible president. “He passed the commander
Qatar Emir makes history by visiting Hamas-run Gaza strip THE Emir of Qatar entered the Gaza Strip yesterday for a visit that broke the isolation of it Islamist rulers, Hamas, but disappointed Israel and mainstream Palestinian leaders in the West Bank. Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani crossed into Gaza from Egypt at the head of a large delegation on what is billed as a humanitarian visit to inaugurate $250 million worth of reconstruction projects. It was the first trip by a head of state to Gaza since 1999 and the emir was given a red-carpet welcome by Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, who declared it a historic day for the enclave. The Western-backed Palestinian Authority of President Mahmoud Abbas, Hamas’ arch-rival, said it hoped the visit would not undermine efforts to rebuild Palestinian unity or signal approval for a separate Palestinian territory. An Israeli foreign ministry spokesman said it was “as-
tounding” that Qatar was taking sides, noting that the emir “has never dignified the PA with a visit”. Hamas seized control of the enclave in 2007 after a brief battle with the armed wing of Abbas’ Fatah movement. It refuses to renounce violence or to recognise Israel’s right to exist and it is ostracised by the West as a terrorist organisation. Haniyeh denies Hamas is seeking to create its own state in the tiny enclave, which is under partial blockade by Israel, with Egypt helping to enforce the Jewish states’ restrictions. The emir and his large delegation were greeted by a Hamas honour guard and Palestinian and Qatari flags decorated the route on the main road north to the city of Gaza, a key highway that Qatar will rebuild. His visit coincided with another round in the low-level conflict between Israel and Hamas. An Israeli officer was badly injured by an explosion on the Gaza border
and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised a “strong response”, which often comes in the form of Israeli air strikes. The emir was due to make a public appearance in one of Gaza’s largest football stadiums, and security arrangements have been in place for days ahead of the visit, seen by Hamas as a victory after five years of isolation. Western-allied Gulf Arab states are trying to lure Hamas away from its alliance with Iran, whose nuclear energy programme has raised the prospect of a war with Israel. Qatar’s emir has met Israeli leaders in the past and is working hard to boost the diplomatic clout of his small country. He has also previously sought to mediate between Hamas and Fatah to end the divisions that have weakened the Palestinian cause. Hamas says his trip would mark the beginning of the end of Israel’s blockade policy.
in chief test and, in our view, emerged looking more like a winner,” wrote Charles Gabriel, an analyst with the political-intelligence group Capital Alpha Partners. “A loss by the president is seeming more vi-
able by the day.” Obama holds a narrow advantage in the handful of battleground states that will decide the election, most notably Ohio, which has been buoyed by his bailout of the
domestic auto industry. But Romney appears to be firming up his lead in North Carolina, a state Obama had hoped to carry, and his campaign is pushing to put Democratic-leaning states like Wisconsin in play. Florida is also a critical swing state in the election, and most polls show Romney leading there by a narrow margin. The Obama campaign hopes to lock in support early in an election where turnout will be a major factor, especially in states as tight as Florida. Statistics compiled by the Miami Herald show that Republicans have a slight edge among the 830,000 voters who have cast their ballots by mail already. Democrats hope to even the score with early in-person voting, which starts on Saturday. Obama leads Romney among likely voters by a statistically insignificant margin of one percentage point, according to an online Reuters/ Ipsos daily tracking poll released yesterday. Obama supporters say they have expected a close race all along, given the polarised electorate and the sluggish economy. “You knew this election was going to tighten up no matter who our opponent was,” Vice President Joe Biden said on CBS’s This Morning.

Greek coalition partners refuse to back troika demands for labour reform TWO OF Greece’s coalition parties yesterday stuck to a hard line against labour reforms demanded by the country’s lenders, blocking political agreement on a crucial austerity package. The Democratic Left and PASOK Socialist parties in the fragile three-way coalition have repeatedly insisted they will not back controversial plans to cut wages, reduce severance payments and scrap automatic wage hikes. The allies in the past have signalled that they will ultimately sign up to the austerity package, vital for Athens to secure further aid, but that first they want concessions from lenders on the contested labour.
HOPES Leaders of both parties refused to change their stance after the latest round of talks with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras yesterday. This dashed hopes that had risen in recent days that the three leaders were close to sealing a deal on the austerity plan. “I won’t accept or vote for the labour reforms the troika demands, and neither will the deputies of the Democratic Left,” that party’s leader, Fotis Kouvelis, said. “This will be my stance, steady and unchanged, until the end... Labour rights have already been crippled and these troika demands are nothing more than a

plan to eliminate what’s left.” Samaras’ government has been holding parallel talks with coalition party leaders and the troika of European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund lenders for months on a €11.5 billion package of spending cuts. Hopes that a comprehensive deal was near grew after inspectors from the lenders left Athens last week saying the two sides had agreed on most reforms and austerity cuts needed to unlock the country’s next tranche of aid. Evangelos Venizelos, head of the PASOK Socialists, also reiterated his opposition to the reforms and urged Samaras to tell European partners that Greek society could not handle another round of painful cuts. “We must not open new fronts like labour reforms that do not contribute anything to our fiscal targets,” Venizelos said, adding that the country had already implemented a round of labour cuts earlier this year. “It’s unjustified and provocative to open this discussion again now.” Both Kouvelis and Venizelos are under pressure from their voter base to fight the proposed round of wage and pension cuts that many Greeks say has only impoverished them and plunged the economy into a tailspin. Greece is in its fifth year of recession with one in four Greeks out of a job. Samaras, however, has insisted that the government has no choice but to push through the austerity cuts to secure aid and avoid bankruptcy next month.

EU airlines must pay delays compensation European court of justice rules €250-600 for delays, cancellations By Foo Yun Chee EUROPEAN Union airlines must pay compensation for delayed flights unless the delay was caused by circumstances beyond their control, the bloc’s highest court said. Travellers should be recompensed for delays of more than three hours, the European Union Court of Justice ruled yesterday, reaffirming a right established three years ago in a case involving Air France. The ECJ was ruling in one case involving German carrier Lufthansa and a second involving British Airways , easyJet, TUI Travel and the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Passengers on flights operated by EU airlines starting or ending in the 27-nation grouping are entitled to €250600 for delays or cancellations under EU rules. “The Court of Justice has confirmed its previous ruling that passengers whose flights have been delayed for a long
time may be compensated,” it said. It did not say what circumstances leading to a delay might be beyond an airine’s control. The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) said the EU’s executive arm should do more to reinforce passenger rights. “In the long run, the European Commission needs to set this and similar recent judgments in stone in its ongo-
ing review of the regulation,” said BEUC Director General Monique Goyens, referring to the 2004 EU rules. “Keyhole surgery is needed, not dramatic reform. The main challenge is enforcing what already exists. They also need to withstand what is quite robust industry pressure to dilute the law.” Raymond Veldkamp, the owner of Flight Delayed which helps consumers seek
AEGEAN AIRLINES TO BUY OLYMPIC AIR GREECE’S Aegean Airlines is making a fresh attempt to buy Olympic Air, this time for an agreed €72 million, in a bid to generate savings to cope with the country’s deep recession and create a stronger domestic competitor to foreign rivals. Greece’s economy is in its fifth year of recession as it drives through austerity measures to deal with a debt crisis that led to an international bailout. The country’s banks are also consolidating in an effort to cope with the downturn. Aegean, with a market value of about €121 million, expects to make savings from the deal via improved buying power and the elimination of duplicate systems. Its shares ended 2.9 per cent higher in light volume. Olympic Air will become a subsidiary of Aegean and the brand names and logos of the two companies will be maintained and each will have distinct aircraft and flight staff, Aegean said.
compensation from airlines: said “We do not expect the ruling would make it any easier for passengers to get money from the airlines when their flights are delayed. “Most of the time, passengers get fobbed off with vouchers for a free meal or a refreshment. While in reality they are legally entitled to a much higher compensation.” In the Lufthansa case, passengers sued the airline for compensation in a German court after a flight delay of more than 24 hours. Judges subsequently sought advice from the ECJ. In the second case, British Airways, easyJet, TUI Travel and IATA, challenged Britain’s Civil Aviation Authority after it rejected their request to be exempted from paying for flight delays. British judges also asked the ECJ for guidance. Earlier this month, the ECJ told airlines to compensate travellers bumped off flights because of strikes, saying that was not a good enough excuse not to pay up.
JP Morgan: cast the net wider for income DIFFICULT economic conditions around the world and ultra-low interest rates mean that investors may need to reassess their approach to generating income. Traditional sources such as bank savings and government bonds are likely to remain under pressure for some time, while single asset class solutions lack sufficient diversification to reduce risk. Investors may need to consider a broader approach. One of the ways that investors have sought to meet their income needs in today’s challenging environment is by using equities for income. With dividend yields above bond yields in many markets, investors can currently obtain a more attractive income from a portfolio of defensive, quality stocks, with strong balance sheets and well-covered dividends, than they can from comparable bonds.
Investors can benefit from a globally diversified approach, both by region and by asset class. Combining lowly correlated assets within a portfolio can improve risk-adjusted returns, as well as improving the prospect of maintaining an attractive level of income in varying market conditions. Asset classes such as corporate bonds, property, high yield and emerging market debt also represent significant income opportunities for investors with a longer-term investment horizon. Property is widely used for capital growth, but yields from rental properties have the potential to provide a steady income. For those with the ability to take on higher risk, high yield and emerging market bonds are also gaining recognition for their income-gen-
erating potential. In exchange for their higher risk profile, high yield and emerging market debt offer generous yield premiums over government and investment grade corporate bonds. Since the financial crisis, high yield companies, particularly in the US, have focused on strengthening their balance sheets. Businesses have paid down debt and built up high levels of cash, helping to bring down default rates. Meanwhile the transformation of emerging market economies in recent years has resulted in a dramatic improvement in the credit quality of emerging market debt. One way of accessing diversified income opportunities may be through a global multi-asset income fund, in which expert investors seek out the most attractive income opportunities from around the world. Multi-
asset funds can provide exposure to asset classes investors may struggle to access, or greater diversification than clients could achieve themselves. Ideally, a multi-asset income fund should offer exposure to a broad range of income-generating assets and have the flexibility to move between asset classes, depending on the prevailing market conditions. This approach may improve the prospect of maintaining an attractive income through varying market conditions, helping to satisfy investor’s regular income needs even in today’s low interest rate environment. Opinion
In the end we’ll have to accept troika measures THE GOVERNMENT finally sent its counter-proposals to the troika on Monday night, three months after it had received the package of measures put together by our prospective lenders. For more than two months it simply sat on the package, pretending it did not exist, and in the last three weeks the president decided it was time to commence the social dialogue with the social partners and consultations with the parties so that the counter-proposals could be drafted. The counter-proposals were sent on the day that the state budget for 2013, incorporating the bailout terms, would have been submitted to the legislature, at least according to the finance minister Vassos Shiarly. But Shiarly has been turned into a joke of a minister by the president, who did not even include him in the team that prepared the first batch of counter-proposals at the presidential palace. He has been publicly undermined by the president’s spokesman so often that nothing he says could be taken seriously. This adds to the general confusion surrounding the bailout, the arrival of the troika in Cyprus and whether we would eventually make the November 12 deadline. The news from Brussels yesterday was not good. Asked by the Cyprus News Agency when the troika would be visiting Cyprus, Olli Rehn’s spokesman said it was not yet ready to give an arrival date. It would give a date when this was possible, he said, explaining that the counterproposals had been received and were being studied. The refusal to set a date can only mean one thing – the counter-proposals were not satisfactory and the troika will demand changes. It has become apparent that the troika will come to the island only when the bailout terms are finalised for the signing of the memorandum of understanding. But for the memorandum to be finalised the government will have to put aside most of its badlythought out counter-proposals and agree to most of the conditions included in the troika’s package that was submitted at the end of July. With time running out, the government will be faced with a take-it-or-leave-it proposition by the troika, which is in no rush to give us a loan. When it was engaging in its mindless stalling tactics, the government did not realise that it was in effect weakening its position – undermining its trustworthiness and surrendering the time in which there could have been some constructive consultations over the measures. Now there is no time but we desperately need money, without which the government will not be able to pay salaries at the end of next month. In the end, despite all grandstanding, we will accept the troika’s package, with minimal changes, because there will be no alternative. And this will be no bad thing.

Killing of security chief raises fears for Lebanon T
HE BEIRUT car bomb that killed a top Lebanese security official will probably prove to be the most destabilising attack in Lebanon since the 2005 assassination of former prime minister Rafik alHariri. What is less clear - and this is something that instils fear in a society still scarred by its 1975-90 civil war - is whether the attack was a reprisal or the start of a campaign of violence by Damascus and its allies, suspected by many Lebanese of trying to spread Syria’s conflict across its borders. Lebanon, which has yet to fully overcome its own wartime sectarian divisions, is too fragile to withstand being enveloped by a Syrian conflict that is beginning to mirror Lebanon’s own slide into fratricidal bloodletting. Wissam al-Hassan, the security official who died with seven others on Friday, was buried with full honours in an emotional state funeral on Sunday at the Rafik al-Hariri mosque, the heart of the former premier’s reconstruction legacy in central Beirut. The funeral turned into a political rally against Syria and its local allies in Lebanon. Hassan is thought to have been targeted because in August, after a carefully planned sting operation, his Internal Security Forces intelligence unit arrested a former Lebanese cabinet minister close to Syrian President Bashar alAssad. The minister, Michel Samaha, is charged with transporting Syrian-assembled bombs to launch attacks on sectarian targets in Lebanon. Two Syrian officers, including General Ali Mamlouk, were indicted with Samaha in a humiliating blow to Assad and an unprecedented move against Lebanon’s dominant neighbour. Hassan also led the investigation into Hariri’s murder and uncovered evidence that implicated Syria and Hezbollah, although both deny the charge. An international tribunal accused several Hezbollah members of involvement in the murder. “There is a probability that this will be the start of a new period in which we will see more assassinations, bombings and other problems,” said Sarkis Naoum, a columnist and Syria expert. “Sectarian incitement is on the rise in the country and the killing of Wissam al-Hassan brought things to a head. We may be en-
Analysis Samia Nakoul tering a very dangerous cycle. Anything might happen.” “It is not possible for the Syria conflict not to have implications on Lebanon. The Lebanese have entered the Syria war - one side is with the Assad regime and another is against it. They are fighting each other by proxy,” Naoum said. Tiny Lebanon, with its combustible sectarian mix, is being dragged into the Syria crisis with its rival Shi’ite and Sunni Muslims fighting on opposite sides. Lebanon’s Shi’ite Hezbollah group backs Assad, a member of the Shi’ite-based Alawite sect, in his fight against the Sunni-led insurgency. Lebanon’s Sunnis and allied Sunni powers, notably Saudi Arabia and Turkey, support the Sunni rebels. The killing of thousands of Sunnis in Syria has angered Sunnis in Lebanon and across the region. Hassan’s attacker did more than just kill Lebanon’s most powerful intelligence brain, who collected data on all major players and uncovered several plots in recent years. The killer performed a public execution that sent a warning to all those who dared challenge Syria in Lebanon. Some analysts said the devastating attack against Hassan’s anti-Syria investigative establishment bore important similarities to the blast that targeted Assad’s inner circle of security officials in Damascus in July. “Whoever did this attack wanted to deliver a message that they can reach anybody, that they can hit the highest level of intelligence,” said Beirut-based commentator Rami Khouri. “Whoever did it wanted to say ‘we can still strike’.” The immediate destabilising effect of Friday’s blast can already be seen on the streets. Angry mourners tried to storm Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s offices in central Beirut after the funeral, breaking through a security barrier and scuffling with police who fired in the air in response. “Mikati leave, get out,” chanted hundreds of protesters. They also chanted slogans against Assad, whom they accused of being
ON THIS DAY OCTOBER 24
The most destabilising attack in Lebanon since 2005 behind the killing of Hassan. The protesters blame Mikati’s proSyrian and pro-Iranian-dominated coalition government for failing to provide security or respond effectively to the killing. Mikati, a Sunni Muslim whom many see as unwilling to confront Hezbollah, said he had offered to step down, but that President Michel Suleiman asked him “to stay on to avoid letting Lebanon slide into turmoil”. Khouri, a Middle East affairs specialist, said the Hassan assassination was a logical extension of what has been happening in Syria over the past 19 months. “There has been a steady increase in violence and now we are going to the next step of assassinations, bombings and maybe clashes. It is terrible but it is not unexpected,” he said. Hassan was killed because he was leading the investigation that led to the prosecution of some important figures, he said. “It certainly reminds people of a string of assassinations that followed Hariri’s killing,” Khouri said. Some analysts said the perpetrators of the bombing - which also wounded more than 80 clearly aimed to push Lebanon into a new round of violence. But although sectarian tensions are high, Lebanese factions have no desire to return to civil war. Despite persistent calls by Hariri and others for Mikati to resign,
many politicians and Western envoys sought compromise, arguing that high-level resignations and political turmoil in Lebanon were precisely what Hassan’s killers intended. Lebanon’s sectarian-based politics are further complicated by regional hostility. While the main Lebanese opposition has long been aligned with Washington and Saudi Arabia, Mikati’s governing coalition is endorsed by Iran and Syria. The bombing also heightened fears among Western powers which have criticised Assad and called on him to step down - that the Syria war could ignite conflict across the region. Augustus Richard Norton, a Middle East specialist at Boston University, said it was too early to say who carried out the bombing. “However, there is no doubt that al Hassan’s death will bring smiles to the face of Bashar alAssad and his cohorts,” he wrote in a commentary. Hassan, a Sunni who opposed Syria and Hezbollah, was laid to rest next to Rafik al-Hariri, whose assassination in a similar manner seven years ago sparked widespread protests that ultimately forced Syria to withdraw its troops from Lebanon after 20 years of military and political dominance. But despite the military pullout, Assad retained influence through his Lebanese allies in Hezbollah.

Director Scott died with anti-depressant in system
DeGeneres honoured for lifetime as US entertainer
Autopsy results point to suicide, but no motive found
By Patrick Rucker
By Dan Whitcomb FILM-MAKER Tony Scott had an anti-depressant and sleep aid in his bloodstream when he leapt to his death from a suspension bridge in August, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office said this week. Preliminary autopsy results confirmed that Scott’s death, which baffled investigators and much of Hollywood, was a suicide, caused by blunt force trauma and drowning. The 68-year-old Britishborn director of such blockbusters as Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop II had therapeutic levels of the antidepressant Mirtazapine and the prescription sleep-aid Lunesta in his system, coroner’s investigators found. But the findings shed no light on a motive for Scott to commit suicide. A coroner’s spokesman said a final report was still two weeks away. Family members have dismissed early reports that Scott was suffering from inoperable brain cancer and Craig Harvey, operations chief for the coroner, has pre-
The 68-year-old, born in Britain, is the director of such blockbusters as Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop II viously said that there were no obvious signs of a tumour. The preliminary autopsy report made no mention of any evidence of serious illness. Investigators have offered no theories as to why Scott took his life, and a note he left behind did not explain the suicide. The last person to see Scott was an onlooker parking his car on the Vincent Thomas Bridge over Los Angeles Harbour, who saw the
director leap into the water just after noon on August 19. His body was recovered by law enforcement several hours later. The bridge, the surface of which clears the harbour’s navigation channel by a height of about 185 feet (56 metres), connects the port district of San Pedro at the southern tip of Los Angeles to Terminal Island in the Harbour. Scott, born in northern
England and frequently seen behind the camera in his signature faded red baseball cap, is credited with directing more than two dozen movies and television shows and producing nearly 50 titles. He built a reputation for muscular but stylish highoctane thrillers that showcased some of Hollywood’s biggest stars in a body of work that dated to the 1980s and established him as one
of the most successful action directors in the business. At the time of his death, Scott was reported to be involved in developing several film projects including a sequel to his biggest hit, the 1986 fighter-jet adventure Top Gun, which starred Tom Cruise. The brother of Oscar-winning director Ridley Scott, he is survived by his third wife, Donna, with whom he had two children.
Chart stars One Direction Crowe thanks fans for support join the Heat rich list CHART stars One Direction have amassed so much cash they have soared into an under-30s British rich list - displacing Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint. The quintet are listed at number five in celebrity magazine Heat’s annual Rich List, with a combined worth of £26.33 million, while Grint who held the spot last year is down to seven. However another Potter star Daniel Radcliffe continues to dominate the chart for a further year with his £53.33 million fortune. The list - based on estimates of their financial dealings - sees British Twilight actor Robert Pattinson move up to number two with £38.73 million, pushing Keira Knightley into third spot with £32.7 million. Unsurprisingly Adele has had a massive rise - up ten places and is said to be worth £26.06 million. One Direction, like Adele, have become worldwide stars and conquered the US earlier this year with their debut album Up All Night. Girls Aloud are estimated to be the biggest earning group under 30 with a combined £35.16 million, however they have been listed individually because of their individual careers, despite reuniting to celebrate their tenth anniversary. Heat editor Lucie Cave said: “One Direction will be thrilled to hear that they’ve burst into Heat’s Rich List as the highest new entry at number five. Like any pop stars they’ll be after the number one spot, of course, but if they keep going the way they have been, that might be a reality in 2013. “In these financially tough times it’s good to know that at least somebody is rolling around on carpets woven from gold-plated £50 notes - which is why Heat is delighted to reveal our annual countdown of the richest British celebs under the age of 30.”
Russell Crowe and Danielle Spencer first met 22 years ago
THE Gladiator actor and his wife Danielle Spencer – who have sons Charles, eight, and Tennyson, six, together – revealed their separation earlier this month but until now Russell has not commented on the situation. After a fan named Sarah tweeted him on Sunday to commiserate, writing “Heard about your separation. I said a prayer for you and your family”, Russell responded by tweeting “Hey Sarah, that was very kind of you. Thank you for your thoughts.” Russell, 48 and 43-year-old Danielle first met 22 years ago on the set of the movie The Crossing and were married in a purpose-built chapel at the actor’s farm in Australia in 2003. However, Russell is trying to remain positive and has even been cracking jokes on twitter. The actor had to grow the facial hair for his latest role as the title character in biblical epic Noah and joked he won’t be hiring himself out as a Santa Claus lookalike as he plans to shave it off before Christmas.
ELLEN DeGeneres, an American entertainer and prominent gay rights advocate, received the highest US award for achievement in comedy on Monday. Receiving the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center, the national showcase for arts, DeGeneres was praised as a pioneering female comic whose edgy variety show has helped define the format for daytime television in recent years. But several guests also highlighted the comedian’s groundbreaking decision 15 years ago to go public with her sexual identity in a career-rattling move the comedian said was a necessary step for personal dignity. “I did it for me and it happened to help a lot of other people and cause a big ruckus,” DeGeneres, 54, told reporters before the tribute, summarising her decision in 1997 to come out publicly as gay in tandem with her onscreen character in a move that sparked controversy and prompted some advertisers to flee. The Twain prize, named after the 19th century satirist, is the nation’s highest honour for achievements in comedy. A native of New Orleans, DeGeneres spent her twenties as an itinerant comedian on the Los Angeles nightclub circuit until prominent spots on late night television led to her own prime time sitcom. The original show, Ellen, featured DeGeneres in the lead role as a bookshop owner in an idiosyncratic neighborhood. While the show got a boost after the star came out of the closet, it was over a few years later. She later returned to the standup stage, and hosted the 2001 Emmy awards, which was postponed twice after the Sept. 11 attacks - a somewhat subdued celebration that allowed her to try to lighten the national mood. Several guests said that DeGeneres brought a compassion to her comedy that is rare in the field. “The rest of us comics come from really messed-up, dark childhoods. She might have come from that, I don’t know. But it’s not what she puts forth,” said John Leguizamo, who joined the tributes. “She just puts out this beautiful goodwill.” In the last 10 seasons on television, DeGeneres has left her mark with a daytime variety show which she often uses as a way to promote a commitment to gay equality. “For a lot of people, Ellen is their only homosexual friend,” said late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. DeGeneres is the forth woman to receive the award since its inception in 1998. Comedian and actor Will Ferrell won last year. Past award winners have included Bob Newhart, Steve Martin, Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby.

Education Computer science may be included in EBacc
Islam enters classroom in Russia’s Chechnya
By Alison Kershaw
Chechen Islam implemented to combat Islamist insurgency
COMPUTER science could be added to a list of key academic subjects that British teenagers are encouraged to study at GCSE, Michael Gove indicated last week. England’s education secretary said the subject may become part of the English Baccalaureate (EBacc). The suggestion came as Gove announced that top graduates are to be offered up to £20,000 to train as computer science teachers on courses designed with help from Facebook and Microsoft. Ministers have turned to the social networking giant and other leading technology firms in a bid to improve the quality of computer science teaching in England’s schools. Teenagers are currently awarded the EBacc, first announced in 2010, if they score at least a C at GCSE in English, maths, science, history or geography and a foreign language. But Gove last week said that this could be extended to include computer science. “Computer science requires a thorough grounding in logic and set theory, and is merging with other scientific fields into new hybrid research subjects like computational biology. “If new Computer Science GCSEs are developed that meet high standards of intellectual depth and practical value, we will certainly consider including computer science as an option in the English Baccalaureate.” Ministers would have to consider whether computer science would be an additional subject for pupils to take, or could be an alternative to one of the subjects already in the EBacc. There have been calls for other subjects to be added into the EBacc, most notably religious studies, but this appears to have been ruled out so far. The exclusion of RE has created a storm of protest, with campaigners arguing the move could see the subject marginalised in schools. Gove announced that current ICT teacher training courses will be axed from next year. Instead, new computer science courses, supported by top technology firms such as Facebook, Microsoft and IBM, will be introduced. Students who graduate from university with at least a 2:1 degree will be eligible for a scholarship worth £20,000 to train on one of the new courses, which have been set up with BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, the Department for Education (DfE) said. Scholarships will be awarded to candidates who already have a good understanding of computer science concepts such as algorithms, data, networks and the internet.
By Thomas Grove AT SCHOOL No 20 in Russia’s troubled region of Chechnya, boys sit on one side of the classroom and girls in headscarves on the other. All are silent as the new teacher rises to speak. “Do you say your morning prayers?” Islam Dzhabrailov, 21, asks, wearing a green prayer cap and a plain tunic, religious dress that is increasingly popular in the mountainous province in southern Russia’s mostly Muslim Caucasus region. “It’s just as important as doing your homework,” he tells the students aged 14-15. One of 420 teachers employed from madrasas to teach history of religion, Dzhabrailov is driving efforts by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov to combat Islamist insurgency by implementing his own brand of Islam. In this Kadyrov has the backing of President Vladimir Putin, though some may harbour doubts about the man. Against a background of stricter guidance on women’s dress and wider acceptance of polygamy, critics say Kadyrov is defying Russian separation of religion and state and pushing Chechnya further from Moscow only a decade after federal troops ousted a separatist leadership there to reinstate Kremlin rule. In nearby Stavropol, part of the Russian Orthodox heartland, a school principal set off a storm when she forbade a small group of Muslim girls from wearing the hijab to class. Putin weighed in, stressing the need for secular standards in schools. This year, Russian schools started offering courses in the history of world religions, like Orthodox Christianity and Buddhism; a course on secularism is also offered, reflecting attitudes fostered during the era of the communist Soviet Union. In Chechnya the lines between history of religion and religious education are being blurred. Dzhabrailov, who says he is deputy director of his school’s spiritual-moral department, says the programme is implemented in Chechnya with materials prepared by local religious leaders. Although officially not mandatory, students and teachers say all pupils are obliged to take the course on Islam, which focuses on the history of Islam and how to behave as a Mus-
Dress codes now exist in Chechen schools, imposed by the region’s leader Ramzan Kadyrov (below) lim. “A school should provide a secular education, that is what a school is for, and all the more Russian schools,” said one teacher at the school who declined to give her name for fear of retribution for speaking out against Kadyrov’s policies. “We have enough madrasas open for those who want a spiritual education,” she said. Critics say the Kremlin has given Kadyrov freedom to enforce Islam as he sees fit and build up his authority in Chechnya in exchange for a clampdown on insurgents seeking to carve an Islamic state out of the North Caucasus. Chechnya established a de facto independent government after a devastating 1994-96 war against Moscow, but federal troops reinstated the Kremlin’s authority in a second war in 1999-2000. While Kadyrov appears to hold separatists under control in his area, Islamist rebels prosecute an armed campaign in neighbouring Dagestan to create a sharia-based Muslim state. Kadyrov, who invited the likes of Gerard Depardieu to a glitzy birthday bash earlier this month, has strengthened his own authority in the region. His father Akhmat was leader of the region until 2004, when he was killed in a bomb attack. Last year Chechnya’s leadership said it wanted state workers dressed in “Muslim clothes”, including the hijab for women. They insist it was a “recommendation”, but it is strictly followed. Kadyrov himself has publicly supported polygamy.
Where Putin uses his ties with the Russian Orthodox Church to galvanise his conservative base, Kadyrov plays to the religious sentiments of the local population to compete ideologically with an insurgency stoked by human rights abuses, poverty and corruption. Grigory Shvedov, editor of the news portal Caucasian Knot ( www.kavkazuzel.ru ), says Kadyrov is trying to turn Grozny into a new centre of the Islamic world. “He wants to be seen not only as the head of a region but an Islamic leader, a Caliph,” he said. “The problem for the Kremlin is the more Chechnya develops as the religious centre of the Caucasus and Russia, the further it moves away from Moscow,” he said. Kremlin officials do not express worry in public over the increasing role Islam has played and analysts say Kadyrov will remain loyal to Putin. But the very personal nature of their relationship is also its weakness, said
Alexander Mukhin, head of the Moscow-based Centre for Political information. “Putin depends on Kadyrov and Kadyrov on Putin. The relationship between Chechnya and Moscow depends directly on that personal relationship and if either of them were, God forbid, not to be in power, then that relationship could change drastically,” he said. In School No. 20, Dzhabrailov said the region’s top Muslim leader has decided who will serve in the schools. But he says his position “was created by ... Ramzan Kadyrov himself”. “The authority is given to us not only to teach but to look after the moral upbringing of the students of the school. We as spiritual mentors, have the ability to recommend activities of the teachers,” he said. “All of that for example allows me to control the appearance of the female half of the school,” he said. In class, students yell out answers to questions that he poses. He tells girls that they should not interrupt boys, “even if they are wrong”. Like many buildings in the Chechen capital of Grozny, School No. 20 is sparkling new. Dzhabrailov says that the teaching of Islam is necessary among the students to stop the spread of religious fundamentalism, which he said has led to Arab Spring revolts across the Middle East and North Africa. “We don’t teach radical Islam. And we don’t decrease the freedoms (of our students) as it may appear. It’s simply the proper upbringing of a Muslim Chechen society.”
Dedication rewarded at Britain’s teaching Oscars A FORMER banker and an English literature expert who swapped the lecture hall for the classroom were among those handed awards in London on Sunday night at the teaching profession’s version of the Oscars. There were also accolades for a store manager turned teaching assistant and a headteacher who has spent most of her 35-year career working with children who have special educational
needs. In total seven individuals and one team of school staff and governors were recognised at the Pearson Teaching Awards 2012. This year’s Outstanding New Teacher of the Year was Dr Elizabeth Bailey, who started her teaching career just two years ago at Clacton County High School, Essex. The English teacher, who has a doctorate in her sub-
ject, was described by the school’s headteacher, Jeff Brindle, as having a “deep love” of literature that “shines through everything she does”. Teacher of the Year was Nathan Kemp of Tollgate Primary School in east London and the Headteacher of the Year award went to Anne Bull of Weston All Saints Church of England Primary School, Weston, Bath. David Bonnington, a
former store manager, was named Teaching Assistant of the Year. Judges said that Bonnington, who works at Aylsham High School, Norfolk, was a lifeline to students. Lorraine Stobie, head of Southcraig Campus, an allage special school in Ayr, was given the Ted Wragg Award for Lifetime Achievement. Celebrities including actor James Nesbitt, TV chef Lor-
Headteacher Anne Bull raine Pascale and author Michael Morpurgo helped to present the awards.

Music Brazilian guitar master THE Pharos Arts Foundation will present guitarist Marcos Vinicius in recital at The Shoe Factory in Nicosia on Friday, as part of Brazilian Culture Month. This classical guitarist is a leading figure on the international classical guitar circuit, performing in a wide range of countries from South America to Europe, and now, Cyprus. Born in Congonhas Brazil, Vinicius began his concert career at the age of 14 and since then has obtained enormous success and acclaim. He was only 16 when he received the Honorary Diploma from the Cultural Department of Congonhas and in 1984 he won the prestigious National Villa-Lobos Musical Contest. In 1987 he distinguished himself as the best guitarist in the master classes held by Oscar Ghiglia and received the Diploma of Merit from the Chigiana Musical Academy of Siena. He has performed as a soloist with prestigious orchestras such as the Milan Ensemble, the Pernambuco Symphony Orchestra and the Minas Gerais’ Symphony Orchestra, winning, in 1992 the title of Soloist of the Year for his performance in the famous Concierto de Aranjuez with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra. Over the years, Vicinius has played in the most important cultural centres of Brazil and Europe. Today he is President of the Classical Guitar Academy of Milan and a prominent composer. Tonight Theatre THOC opens with an Oscar THOC’S new Nea Stage production Oscar will be performed at its new theatre from Wednesday through Saturday every two weeks. Opening tonight, the play about a terminally ill child hardly sounds like the sort of theatre one might choose. But it ultimately tries to illustrate the transformative power of love in all its forms. A solo piece based on a short novel by French dramatist, novelist, philosopher and filmmaker Eric-
tention from composers, critics and fans. Vinicius is also active with regard to transcriptions and editing of works for classical guitar and has a collection titled the Marcos Vinivius Guitar Collection which brings to the fore repertoire for the instrument, which is sometimes still unexplored. His extensive knowledge of repertoire also puts Marcos in great demand as lecturer and for master classes. For his show this week, Vinicius will perform a selection of Brazilian pieces as well as works by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Isaac Albeniz, Georg Frederic Handel, Radamés Gnatalli, David Kellner, Mauro Giuliani, Celso Machado and William Lovelady. LITERATURE itself can certainly be described as art, but who knew books could become such beautiful and fascinating visual art as well? When we talk about books, we usually refer to what’s inside, but there is a lot more to books than reading them. This week, you ought to head down to TheArtspace, where you can discover what happens when an artist uses books as their artistic medium, and the results can be truly impressive. Artists’ books, sometimes called altered books, have become popular with mixed media artists. One of the best things about them is that you can apply any technique you already know from other creative areas to the book. The event entitled Art & Literature, is organised in collaboration with Moufflon Bookshop and Publishers and will consist of artists book installations related to poetry by James Joyce and short stories by Samuel Beckett which were created by Horst Weierstall between 1997 and 2001. Weierstall studied at Dartington College and Falmouth School of Art, England (1975-1981). In his various installations, actions and performances he has focused his attentions on border situations concerning body, time, space and movement as interrelated phenomena. Weierstall is the co-founder of the multicultural artist community The Space and formed Artspace in Old Nicosia. He has also been instrumental in teaching young students at the Frederick University Nicosia over the past 10 years. Though Beckett worked outside
the field of visual art, his interest in how human beings attempt to make meaning out of their world speaks directly to the interests of contemporary artists and over the years Weierstall has created artists’ books of small and large scale often inspired by the famous dramatist, poet and novelist. Ireland’s tradition of being a nation of scholars goes back over a thousand years, James Joyce is widely considered a national treasure of Ireland, while Beckett is considered one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. The Nobelprize-winner wrote most of his work in French, and translated it himself into English. He was, in a word, “absurd.” Despite his lengthy and complex career, Beckett will always be closely associated with the absurdist movement, which came about as a reaction to World War II. Needless to say, this genre of theatre took quite some time to catch on because it used techniques that seemed illogical to the theatre world. The plots often deviated from the more traditional episodic structure, and the scenery was often unrecognisable. To make matters worse, the dialogue never seemed to make any sense. For example his best known work, originally dismissed by some critics as a strange play in which nothing happens was Waiting for Godot, wherein two characters wait for a third, who never arrives. Today, his work continues to inform and influence the trajectory of contemporary art. On display only from Friday until Sunday, the Art & Literature event will include screenings of works that Beckett

made for television between 1975 and 1986: Ghost Trio, Eh Joe, Nacht und Träume and Square I+II. In Eh Joe (1966) and Ghost Trio (1977), sound is separated from image, as a voice-over that may or may not be located in the same time and space as the visible action co-exists with lengthy shots of figures in dimly-lit non-realistic sets. Beckett invented an art of the image that would have a profound influence on a whole generation of videomakers. The screenings will be accompanied with a presentation of an introductory text by French philosopher Gilles Deleuze. Art and Literature Artists book installations related to poetry by James Joyce and short stories by Samuel Beckett created by Horst Weierstall. In addition there will be screenings. October 26-28. Able to cope: scientists say Old Tjikko will be able to withstand more heatwaves, floods and rising sea levels
California’s Methuselah bristlecone pine which is around 4,800 years old
Tree, 9,550 years old, aided by global warming as unstable weather harms many other plants reports Alister Doyle
In climate puzzle for crops O
N A windswept Swedish mountain, a 10,000-year-old spruce with a claim to be the world’s oldest tree is getting a new lease of life thanks to global warming, even as many plants are struggling. Scientists are finding that the drift of growing areas for many plants out toward the poles is moving not in a smooth progression but in fits and starts, causing problems for farmers aiming to adapt and invest in cash crops that are more sensitive to climate than is this ancient conifer known as “Old Tjikko”.
At a range of latitudes, but especially in the far north, climate change is bringing bigger than expected swings, putting billions of dollars at stake in a push to develop varieties with resilience to frost and heatwaves, drought or flood. Understanding those plants which are thriving in such hectic environments - like this ragged Christmas tree on a marshy plateau 900 metres above sea level - may yield clues: “It seems to be growing quite well,” said researcher Leif Kullman. “That’s a result of warming in the past 100
years.” Old Tjikko stands above dead roots that Kullman, from Umea University, says date from 9,550 years ago, just as the Ice Age ended. The spruce regenerates clones when low branches sprout new roots so that, unlike California’s Methuselah bristlecone pine whose trunk bears over 4,800 annual growth rings, today’s 5-metre tall trunk began growing only about 1940. Yet the tree’s survival in the same spot since the earliest days of agriculture may offer lessons for pioneers trying to take advantage of global

warming to push the frontiers for crops further north but finding most plants to be far more sensitive. “There will be no nice wine from Sweden this year,” lamented Lauri Pappinen, one of a handful of new wine producers on the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic, where grapes failed to mature after a cool spring followed by mildew in a wet summer. The failure of Pappinen’s 2012 harvest was the first since he started producing a decade ago as an experiment on the same latitude as southern Alaska or Siberia. The Nordic region is aided by the Gulf Stream bringing warm water from the tropics. “Maybe we could collect 300kg of grapes. But it’s not worth making the machines dirty,” he said, adding that his 8.6 acre vineyard can produce up to 10,000kg. “The starlings are having a big party right now,” he said. Climate unpredictability is especially true further north, in the Arctic, where the extent of ice on the Arctic Ocean shrank to a record low this summer. Less attention has been paid to how the thaw affects growing conditions on land. “That’s been a surprise in the last years. Everyone thought it would be warmer and nice weather. But suddenly it’s wetter and colder in some regions,” said Lars-Otto Reiersen, head of the Secretariat of the Arctic Monitoring
and Assessment Programme. Many studies show that more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the main greenhouse gas, will initially lead to more growth of plants worldwide. But, Reiersen said, not enough study has been made of the downside of increased unpredictability. Part of the problem for crops at higher latitudes is that the sun still rises and sets at the same times - the light will always be faint in spring and autumn even if the air is warmer. “There will be extreme weather and that also means risks of frosts in the growing season,” said Inger Alsos, a
professor at the University of Tromsoe in Norway and a specialist in Arctic ecology. “Frost resistance is a key trait.” Plant breeders and genetic experts were working with a frost-resistant clover, for instance, recently found on Svalbard, a chain of Norwegian islands in the North Atlantic, 1,000km below the North Pole. It could be developed to help grow animal fodder in the north. And Kullman from Sweden said experiments show that spruces, for instance, produce a type of anti-freeze letting them survive down to about minus 50 Celsius. That might also help genetic research into

frost resistance. But for many crops, the expansion of potential growing areas due to climate change may not add to overall production. “The overall balance will stay as it is,” said Hans-Joachim Braun, head of the global wheat programme at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center based in Mexico City. “The losses from climate change will offset the benefits we have expanding in highlatitude areas.” “There will be beneficiaries, such as the United States, Canada, Kazakhstan, Russia,” he said, noting that
wheat now grows as far north as southern Scandinavia. But many developing nations that now produce wheat will lose out as it gets too hot. Plant breeders have made huge progress in the past. Maize, for instance, is a tropical crop that has been adapted to grow at lower temperatures and with longer summer daylight hours in places like the United States or Europe, he said. In the far north, Arctic plants may struggle since they cannot extend their ranges much if the climate warms - there is no land in cooler latitudes, only the Arctic Ocean and icecap.
The northern bilberry, for instance, is likely to gain tiny new areas on the coast of Greenland or on Russian Arctic islands this century as the climate warms. But it will lose big tracts of growing territory to the south, said Alsos at Tromsoe. “The same is true of many Arctic plants,” she added. Experts disagree about Greenland’s potential to provide a fertile new agricultural space as equatorial lands burn up. Some speak of a new boom in the Danish territory as melting ice opens the Arctic to shipping, mining and oil exploration.
But farming in most of Greenland is a long way off. Alsos said any thaw in Greenland, shrinking the fringes of an ice sheet that is 3,000 metres, or two miles, thick, will reveal barren ground. “There is no topsoil,” she said. That would take decades, or centuries, to form. “And we are talking about Arctic plants. Agriculture is not really part of it,” she said. Southern Greenland, populated, if only sparsely, can now grow more potatoes or carrots and animal fodder, she said. But agriculture will remain marginal. After past failures, almost 200 nations have agreed to
work out a global deal to slow climate change by the end of 2015 that will enter into force in 2020 to help avoid more heatwaves, floods and rising sea levels. While that may be vital to ensure many crops, Old Tjikko can probably cope with the changes. Kullman said the spruce had survived partly due to factors such as its isolation from other trees on a boggy area with no reindeer. The animals can damage trees with their antlers and isolation means less risk of damage from forest fires. And he said that, while there would be disruptions to all plants as the climate warmed,
their ability to survive should not be underestimated: “All of our species,” he said, “Have survived previous inter-glacial periods that were even warmer.” The biggest threat to Old Tjikko is probably not climate change, according to Eduardo Zuniga, a guide who shows occasional visitors the tree on its trackless plateau in Fullufjallet National Park, northwest of Stockholm. Some springy lichen has been trodden flat by sightseers coming to gaze on the “world’s oldest tree”, threatening to damage its roots. “We may,” he said, “Have to put up a fence.”

Television PICK OF THE DAY The Vow (Novacinema1, 20.05) “Isn’t it romantic,” sang Ella Fitzgerald (among many others; it’s a Rodgers and Hart song). “Merely to be young on such a night as this? / Isn’t it romantic? Every note that’s sung is like a lover’s kiss”. Then there’s Channing Tatum farting in the car in The Vow and his young wife Rachel McAdams rolling up the window, the better to inhale the aroma. “That is so twisted,” exclaims Channing, “but totally romantic!”. Obviously, reasonable people can disagree on what constitutes romantic behaviour - yet The Vow is objectively un-romantic, one could even say anti-romantic. Consider the plot, which begins with young couple Channing and Rachel very much in love. She’s an up-andcoming sculptress, he’s ... actually, I forget what he does for a living. It doesn’t matter. The point is, they love each other - at least till a car accident puts Rachel in a coma, and when she wakes up she can’t remember anything. Actually, that’s not quite true. She remembers her parents, and her taste in chocolates is still as it was - but she shows no interest in Art (taken back to her studio, she just mopes around) and is also out of love with Channing, not even knowing who he is (let alone wishing to inhale his farts in a closed space). In fact, The Vow is less a fi lm about amnesia than Time-travel: it’s like Rachel
goes back in Time, morphing from sophisticated bohemian to sheltered Daddy’s girl who’s engaged to be married to some boring accountant type instead of dashing Channing. Needless to say, the family and Channing don’t get along, so she has to choose between the two - and Channing vows to win her heart again, hence the title. All well and good - but what about True Love? What about soulmates? What about love as a great irresistible force that takes hold of your heart and refuses to be denied? What The Vow is really saying is that love is a product of circumstances, the “moments of impact” that defi ne who we are. Rachel fell in love with Channing (it’s implied) because she was at a point in her life when she wanted someone like that; he fit her idea of boho urban life, or whatever. Had she met him a few years earlier, she wouldn’t even have noticed him. A few years from now, she might fall out of love with him and shack up with a yoga instructor. This is all sadly true, and undoubtedly realistic - but surely a romantic drama should at least be romantic. Still a big hit, mostly because audiences like to look at beautiful people without caring too much about what’s actually being said. Or maybe they just like to fart in the car and roll up the window. Made in 2012.

Joe Maddison’s War (CyBC2, 21.00) Raise a glass to Alan Plater, one of the great TV writers - though admittedly he was lucky to have lived at a time when British TV was making mini-series like Fortunes of War, The Beiderbecke Affair and A Very British Coup, three of his many screenplays. Plater died in 2010 and this TV movie was his fi nal credit, a tale of the Home Guard during WW2: Kevin Whately is our titular hero, a rather disillusioned Tyneside shipyard worker who joins the Guard, trying to do his bit - but his wisecracking friend Eddie (Robson Green) clashes with the uptight company CO (Derek Jacobi), and Joe ends up leading the men out on strike after Eddie is expelled. Sounds like a sly piece, feeding the appetite for WW2 nostalgia while also making points about the British class system - and it’s not on the level of Plater’s more celebrated fi lms (partly because those were mini-series, whereas this is a standalone drama) but works pretty well as a gentle swansong-cum-tribute. Made in 2010.
Burn After Reading (LTV, 21.00) Shown before, of course, but a prime-time slot offers a chance to re-watch this Coen Brothers comedy - and it’s very re-watchable, because the plot is a red herring so knowing what happens isn’t a problem (besides, it’s hilarious). A CD containing the fi rst draft of a CIA agent’s memoirs falls into the hands of two gym workers, who (mistakenly) think it contains top-secret info and try to sell it to the Russians. That’s the rough outline, but John Malkovich (as the grumpy CIA man), Brad Pitt (a dopey personal trainer) and George Clooney (a philandering husband) make it more than worthwhile. Be warned, though, it’s pretty foul-mouthed. Made in 2008.
The New Protocol (Novacinema1, 22.00) Welcome to the New Protocol for Film Picks, aimed at improving multicultural diversity: tonight we’ve gone from the North-West of England to Middle America and we now shift to France, where working-class dad Clovis Cornillac gets some awful news. His teenage son has died in a road accident, and of course Clovis is shattered - but a few things don’t add up, the trajectory of the car seems wrong for an accident, and a fiery young woman (Marie-Josée Croze) turns up claiming that Clovis’ son was involved in the testing for a new experimental drug, and may have been killed by pharmaceutical companies trying to hide the evidence. Is the young activist right? Was the kid’s death part of a wide-ranging conspiracy? Haven’t seen the fi lm (it went straightto-DVD in most places) but I’m guessing the answer is ‘Yes’, with many a car chase and B-movie action scene along the way. Ah, diversity. LEO July 23 - August 22
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21
The Moon merges with Neptune today, and although this is not long lasting, it may just see you feeling spaced out or want to retreat from others. Ironically, the Sun forges an excellent link with the latter, suggesting this may be a day when your gut instincts can pay off really well. However, if you’re unsure on anything important, wait a few days.
If you are thinking about making any changes to where you live, you may be better to remunerate longer than just today. By tomorrow, you can find yourself clearer about the potential, but also the cost or downsides of any changes you hope for. If you feel out of sorts with yourself, try not to bottle up what you are feeling. Share with a caring friend.
How do you feel about showing the more sensitive part of your nature? If you are comfortable with this, a time of profound growth and personal development is in store. If you are someone with a strong desire to project a confident persona, whilst at times feeling tremulous, consider that this will put you under extra emotional pressure.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21
VIRGO August 23 - September 23
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20
Definitely a time when your hopes around what other people can bring to the world is enhanced. This can be in all sorts of relationships, but if you can just hold on to your natural, earthy realism, it will help to balance out any more idealistic expectations. Yet if you encounter someone with beliefs you too share, or respect, you’ll quickly warm to them.
This is a time to choose your words carefully. There is little doubt you have enjoyed some wonderful repartee this month, and this may have lead to some flirty encounters, and can still do so. But something you say which is meant in a light hearted or jovial way, could be taken at face value by someone you encounter. Even a slice of irony can go awry.
A thoughtful message or gesture can be worth its weight in gold. You can be one of the most protective of the zodiac signs, so this kind of thing is something you often specialise in. So if you think to contact someone who is finding life hard going, do. Then again, someone may back you up. More sincere relationships take on greater importance now.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21
LIBRA September 24 - October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19
If you find yourself having doubts about your role in life, try to check out of this pattern of thoughts and focus on doing the things you can get practical and tangible results from. A kind of new reality is settling in about life, but the downside is if you start to compare yourself to other people. Better to zone in on the things you do well.
You might find yourself feeling a bit self conscious today. Perhaps someone is going to put a bit of a guilt trip on you, or you will feel awkward about something you feel you should be doing. The fact is Libra, that you are set to go through some kind of review about your core values. The good thing about this is that it can help to bring you up to date.
Business and financial vibes have been very positive this month. But coming to terms with your own reservations about commercialism, and the expectations success can bring, is likely to be an on-going process. Today may see you want to donate something to a good cause. The needs of an older or influential person may however, impinge on your free time.
CANCER June 22 - July 22
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22
PISCES February 20 - March 20
Thoughts of faraway places can dance on your senses today. Then again, you could be in the mood for some entertaining escapism, so going to see a movie could also appeal. If you have a gift or talent which has lain dormant of unexploited, perhaps due to work, childcare, or others demands, this would be a good time to re-engage with them.
If you can merge your desire to get things done, with an awareness to how this impacts on others, or can help someone along the way, you will be making the best of the angle between the Sun and Neptune. However, if you don’t feel you have a tremendous amount of extra time or space, don’t burden yourself. Your energy is only finite.
Links to higher education, training programmes, overseas business interests or travel for fun or business, are all to the fore. But as much as you may want to show a more independent streak, other indications suggest you can also come to an awareness, that these things are never a perfect process. Change has its own intrinsic complications.

Sport Armstrong must return his prize money, says Tour chief Fall out from doping case continues By Matt McGeehan DISGRACED Lance Armstrong could be forced to repay his Tour de France winnings after being stripped of his seven titles for doping offences. The UCI, cycling’s world governing body, ratified the sanctions recommended by the United States Anti-Doping Agency, who concluded Armstrong and his United States Postal Service team ran “the most sophisticated, professionalised and successful doping programme that sport has ever seen”. Armstrong was banned for life and all his results from August 1, 1998 removed, including his wins at the Tour from 1999 to 2005. The UCI management committee will meet on Friday to discuss the “exact sporting consequences” of the decision, including whether the titles and prize money will be re-distributed. Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme believes the race must not have a victor in the Armstrong years. Prudhomme said: “The formal decision has to be taken by the UCI but for us, we must have a clean record. This period must be marked by the absence of winners. “The UCI rules are clear. When a rider is disqualified, he must pay the prize money back.” The International Olympic Committee will await Fri-
Disgraced: Lance Armstrong yesterday removed ‘7-time Tour de France champion’ from his Twitter profile day’s UCI meeting and further information before a decision is made on the bronze medal Armstrong won in Sydney in 2000. Armstrong, who battled back from cancer to return to professional cycling, has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and refused to co-operate with the USADA investigation. Armstrong, who cuts an increasingly isolated figure as Oakley became the latest sponsor to withdraw their backing, or the World AntiDoping Agency could yet
take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. UCI president Pat McQuaid rejected calls for his resignation over perceived failures by the world governing body over the Armstrong affair, instead insisting cycling has a positive future and “Lance Armstrong has no place in cycling”. McQuaid was forced to insist the UCI has “nothing to hide” over a donation of more than US dollars 100,000 made by Armstrong in 2002, denying it was connected to any cover-up of a positive
test. “UCI has nothing to hide in responding to the USADA report,” McQuaid added. “Don’t try to make the connection between the suspicious test and the donation. There were no positive tests from him. “There is no connection between the donation given to the UCI and a test being covered up because there was no test covered up. Meanwhile, Armstrong has been asked to repay a disputed bonus payment. The 41-year-old received a
bonus payment of five million US dollars after a legal battle with SCA Promotions, who had declined to pay the sum in the belief the American had doped to win his seven Tour titles. Armstrong yesterday removed ‘7-time Tour de France champion’ from his Twitter profile in his first response to being stripped of his seven titles for doping offences. His profile said: “Raising my five kids. Fighting Cancer. Swim, bike, run and golf whenever I can.”
All Blacks great Whineray dies By Nick Mulvenney
Legend: Sir Wilson Whineray (front right) has been described as the greatest of all New Zealand rugby captains
NEW Zealand rugby great Wilson Whineray, who captained the All Blacks 67 times between 1957 and 1965, has died in Auckland. He was 77. Judged by renowned rugby writer Terry McLean as the greatest of All Blacks captains, Whineray was a mobile prop with the handling skills of a back who played in a much-feared pack alongside Colin Meads, Kel Tremain and Ken Gray. In total, he played 77 times for the All Blacks, including in 32 Tests - a remarkable tally in the days when only two or three Tests were played each year. New Zealand lost only four of the 30 Tests played when he was captain. After retirement from the game in 1966, he studied on a scholarship for an MBA at Harvard University before forging a successful business career. Whineray was knighted in 1998 for “services to sport and business man-
agement”. “Today is a very sad day. We have lost one of New Zealand’s great heroes and for the rugby community we have lost a much-loved patron and champion of rugby,” New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) chairman Mike Eagle said in a news release. “Regarded as one of the great All Blacks legends, Sir Wilson also made significant contributions to the community through his work with sport, charities and business.” Whineray made his international debut in 1956 and only a year later, at the age of 23, was made captain, scoring two tries against Australia in his first match as skipper. “At the time I thought I was a pretty average kind of captain, but as you go on and learn from the experience, the mistakes, you learn from them and how to improve,” he once said in an interview with the Times. He was the first player from rugby’s most successful nation to be inducted into the International Rugby Board’s Hall of Fame in 2007.
IN BRIEF SF Giants reach World Series THE San Francisco Giants routed the St. Louis Cardinals 9-0 in Game Seven of the National League Championship Series to complete a stunning comeback and advance to the World Series against the Detroit Tigers. The Giants, the 2010 World Series winners, trailed last year’s champion Cardinals 3-1 in the best-of-seven series but completed three straight victories by a combined score of 20-1 to win the National League championship four games to three. San Francisco will host the American League winning Tigers, who swept the New York Yankees 4-0 to win the pennant, in the first two games of Major League Baseball’s championship starting with the opener of the Fall Classic tonight. The victory for the Giants was their sixth do-or-die triumph of the postseason, after fighting back to win the last three games on the road in their bestof-five Division Series with the Cincinnati Reds. “They played with more heart, more determination than any club I’ve ever seen,” said manager Bruce Bochy after hoisting the National League championship trophy. “They were relentless, they didn’t want to go home.
‘Boring’ MotoGP VALENTINO Rossi has called MotoGP “boring” and said that the sport has to change. Jorge Lorenzo and fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa have dominated this year’s championship, winning 12 out of the 16 races so far between them. “Now is the worst moment in MotoGP since I joined in 2000,” Rossi told BBC Sport. “It is the most boring moment. Races are quite bad and it is very difficult to stay awake.” Defending champion Casey Stoner - who is retiring at the age of 27 next month - is the only other man to win this season and seven-time MotoGP champion Rossi believes the sport needs to change. Rossi, 33, believes he can return to winning ways next season as he prepares to return to Yamaha. He won four world championships with Yamaha before leaving for Ducati at the end of 2010, but has not won in the last 37 races.

Arsenal put their formidable home record on the line Gunners unbeaten in 45 games at the Emirates against foreign opposition ARSENAL have an extraordinary record at home against non-English opponents and are unbeaten in 45 matches at the Emirates. They’ll be looking to continue that run when they face Schalke tonight in their Champions League Group B clash. This will not be an easy task for The Gunners though, as they have a number of key players out with injuries. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain picked up an injury in Saturday’s defeat against Norwich. He’ll be joining Bacary Sagna, Theo Walcott, Laurent Koscielny and Abou Diaby on the sidelines. One piece of good news however was the return of Jack Wilshere, after a 15 month lay off. The England international was included in the squad for the match against Norwich although he didn’t get a run out. It is unlikely that Wilshere will start against Schalke seeing as he still won’t be fully match fit, but depending of how things are going for Arsenal we could see him make a cameo appearance during that latter stages of the match. Schalke will be without German international Julian Draxler who suffered a broken wrist during the club’s last Champions League outing against Montpelier, although Schalke manager Huub Stevens has said that Draxler could play with a cast on his
Santi Cazorla will have a pivotal role for Arsenal, who will be missing several key players for the visit of Schalke arm if the player felt comfortable enough. Two other players that will be sidelined for the German team are Kyriakos Papadopulous who is suffering from chicken pox and Christoph Metzelder who is a doubt with a knee injury. Arsneal go into the game on faltering form, losing two of their last five games and winning three.
The Gunners will be looking to be more creative against Schalke after they appeared to run out of ideas against a determined Norwich side. But with Chamberlain and Walcott both out Lukas Podolski and Gervinho will have to give the team width with goal-shy Olivier Giroud playing as the main striker. Schalke have been in good form in the Bundesliga and
in the Champions League although they dropped two points against group rivals Montpelier on October 3rd. The German side will take confidence from their 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund at the weekend and will be hoping to carry that form into the Champions League. With Walcott, one of Arsenal’s main danger men, out, Spain’s Santi Cazorla will be
the player pulling the strings in the middle of the park. He has a brilliant eye for that killer pass and has an awesome shot, with both feet. He has been a delight to watch so far, although he was not at his best against Norwich. So if Schalke want to stop Arsenal from playing, they need to close down Cazorla and give him no space whatsoever.
Malaga and Isco in date with destiny against woeful Milan By Mark Elkington
Talented: Malaga playmaker Isco, 20, was voted by coaches as La Liga’s ‘revelation player’ of last season
MALAGA midfielder Isco has the perfect stage to showcase his considerable talents when the in-form Champions League debutants look to make the most of visiting AC Milan’s woes tonight. The 20-year-old playmaker is establishing himself as the driving force at the heart of Manuel Pellegrini’s side and he was voted by coaches as La Liga’s ‘revelation player’ of last season. Malaga are top of Group C with two wins from two games, holding a two-point lead over misfiring Milan in second place. Youth international Isco was named in Vicente del Bosque’s provisional Spain squad for Euro 2012 and has been a key figure in the Qatari-owned club’s impressive start to the season. He is their joint top scorer in the Champions League with two goals and netted
for the second time this season in La Liga when Malaga overcame Valladolid 2-1 on Saturday to stay third in the table. Coach Pellegrini has fashioned a side similar to the Villarreal team he led to the last four of the Champions League as debutants in 2005-06 - they are confident in possession and difficult to score against. Malaga defeated both Anderlecht and Zenit St Petersburg 3-0 earlier in the competition and boast the meanest defence in La Liga having let in just five goals in eight games. “We aren’t scared of Milan,” winger Joaquin told the local newspaper Diario Sur. “If we win the three points will almost assure us of a place in the last 16. “It’s the most important fixture in the history of the club.” Seven-time European champions Milan are still struggling to come to terms with the sale of influential
players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva and Antonio Cassano and have suffered a dreadful start to the season. They were held 0-0 at home by Anderlecht in their opening Group C game and scraped a 3-2 win in St Petersburg earlier this month. Milan are down in 15th place in Serie A after a 3-2 defeat at Lazio on Saturday continued their worst league start in seven decades. “Five losses in eight games is a lot, far too much,” Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani told the club’s television station. Galliani was again pressed on Saturday about the future of under-fire coach Massimiliano Allegri. “Everyone keeps asking me,” he said. “The coach stays in his job and he has to try and make sure the team put points on the board. There is no desire whatsoever to change the coach.”
AEL and Christodoulou part ways By Nemanja Bjedov AEL have parted ways with coach Pambos Christodoulou, who led the Limassol side to the Cyprus title last season for the first time since 1968. The decision came just three days before the visit of Turkish side Fenerbahce in the Europa League. An announcement on the club’s website read: “The board of directors announces that it is ceasing its cooperation with the coach of the team Pambos Christodoulou and his coaching staff. The board would like to offer its warmest thanks to Pambos Christodoulou and his associates for their excellent cooperation as well as for the joy that they have given our club on many occasions in the past. The crowning moment was the league title last season. We would like to wish them all the very best in their future careers.” AEL were beaten to a UEFA Champions League place by Belgian champions Anderlecht, but did enough to earn a Europa League group stage debut which ended in a goalless draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach of Germany. In the domestic championship, they currently trail the leaders by four points after six rounds. There has been media speculation that there was a disagreement between Christodoulou and the club chairman over terms of a new contract, but both parties are saying Christodoulou left with mutual consent, All of his associates - Lazaros Semos, Kokos Evripidou, Andreas Mavris and Sotiris Charalambous have also departed. Rui Junior remains the director of football. Portuguese coach Jorge Paulo Costa Almeida, 41. has agreed to take over the Cyprus champions until the end of the season and he will be making his debut against Fenerbahce tomorrow evening at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. Almeida has managed Braga, Olhanense and Academica de Coimbra - all of which are in his native Portugal. He will have only two days to prepare the team to bounce back from their matchday two 5-1 thrashing by Marseille and to defend their unbeaten home record as Fenerbahce make a maiden trip to Cyprus in Group C. Four previous games have been played between Turkish and Cypriot clubs in UEFA competition, with the Turkish sides winning twice, both times narrow 1-0 victories at home, and the Cypriot teams recording a solitary win. In the second round of the 1987/88 European Cup, Besiktas were drawn against APOEL but progressed to the next stage without kicking a ball after both matches were cancelled due to political tensions between the two countries.

English champions face crunch Ajax clash By Toby Davis MANCHESTER City’s struggle to transfer their Premier League form to the Champions League will come into focus again tonight when they face Ajax Amsterdam knowing defeat would leave them in a precarious position. After going out in the group stage last season, City’s expensively assembled squad have failed to light the touch paper in this year’s competition and occupy third place in Group D with a solitary point from their opening two games. Manager Roberto Mancini could point to the fact his team have already faced the champions of Spain and Germanyin the toughest of the eight groups. But there will be no excuses if his side come home empty-handed from Wednesday’s encounter with Ajax who are bottom having lost their first two matches. For a team that has been hand-picked by a manager given almost infinite resources, City have underwhelmed in Europe’s elite competition. Since making their Champions League debut last season they have lost three
of their four away games and went down 3-2 to Real Madrid last month in their first road trip of this campaign. Mancini’s principal headache will be deciding who to play up front after Edin Dzeko, who has been used mostly as an impact substitute this season, came off the bench on Saturday to rescue his team with two goals in a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion. The Bosnian could feel aggrieved to be kicking his heels on the sidelines with question marks still hanging over temperamental Italian Mario Balotelli. Despite only starting twice in the Premier League and once in Europe, Dzeko already has six goals this season compared to Balotelli’s one. “Edin’s been in superb form, not just in terms of goal scoring but at the end of last season and at the start of this season, coming off the bench or starting, he’s been excellent,” assistant manager David Platt told City’s website (www. mcfc.co.uk). “People should be disappointed when they’re left out but the reaction that you want is that if they come on they fight.” City have never lost to a
Dutch team in three previous fixtures, all against Twente Enschede. On their only visit to the Netherlands they drew 1-1 with Twente in the 1978-79 UEFA Cup first round. The English Premier League champions will be boosted if playmaker David Silva can recover in time from a hamstring injury sustained on international duty. The clever Spaniard was starting to rediscover his sparkling form of last season before being injured in last week’s 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw with France. Ajax will be short on confidence having endured a miserable October. Frank de Boer’s team kicked off the month with a 4-1 home defeat against Real Madrid and in the Dutch league his young side have twice given away leads to draw against mid-table opponents. “It all has to do with adjusting the team to new young players,” said De Boer. “We have to start again but we are really good at that.” Without injured striker Kolbeinn Sightorsson, Ajax must decide whether to play Ryan Babel as the target man or move attacking midfielder Siem de Jong further forward.

Injuries hit Real as confident Dortmund relish ‘cool’ game By Karolos Grohmann
The German champs have looked impressive this season
BORUSSIA Dortmund entertain Real Madrid in the Champions League tonight with the Germans eager to take advantage of their injury-hit Spanish opponents by grabbing top spot in Group D. Germany midfielder Sami Khedira returned to training on Sunday, a rare piece of positive injury news for Jose Mourinho’s Real team who are two points ahead of Dortmund in the group. Full backs Marcelo, Alvaro Arbeloa and Fabio Coentrao returned from international duty with problems of varying seriousness, Marcelo being ruled out for around three months with a fractured bone in his foot. Mourinho deployed midfielder Michael Essien at left back for Saturday’s 2-0 La Liga win at home to Celta Vigo with Sergio Ramos moving to right back and inexperienced teenager Raphael Varane slotting in
alongside Pepe in central defence. “The four guys at the back played very well,” Mourinho’s assistant Aitor Karanka said. “Celta only had one chance with a header at the end and our defence did some fantastic work. “Sergio knows the (right back) position, Rafa delivers when he is used and Pepe was the same as always.” Real’s prolific Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo gashed his knee but is expected to be available for the trip to Germany. Mourinho will need all the fit bodies he can muster if Dortmund emulate the form they showed in a 1-1 draw at Manchester City earlier this month. City needed a last-gasp equaliser to snatch a point against the Bundesliga champions. Dortmund’s 2-1 home defeat by Schalke 04 on Saturday did little to dampen spirits ahead of Wednesday’s match.
“We did not play well against Schalke and there is nothing we can do to change that,” said coach Juergen Klopp. “But the match against Real Madrid remains a cool game.” Klopp should have left back Marcel Schmelzer and midfielder Ilkay Guendogan back after they missed Saturday’s game along with Jakub Blaszczykowski who will remain sidelined for at least two more months. Playmaker Mario Goetze is also set to return after missing the Ruhr Valley derby, infusing their midfield with the creativity and spark that was missing against Schalke. The Germans started that game with a 3-5-2 system but it was dropped after 25 minutes in favour of a 4-4-2 lineup that is likely to be used against Real. “We will show a completely different face against Real,” said defender Mats Hummels. “There will also be the return of some of our injured players.”
GOAL-LINE technology providers GoalRef and Hawk-Eye have been authorised to install their systems worldwide after signing licence agreements with FIFA, football’s world governing body said yesterday. The announcement came a year after FIFA began an exhaustive search for systems which could reliably detect whether or not a ball had crossed a goalline. “Between October 2011 and June 2012, both companies passed a series of extensive laboratory and field tests, tests in simulated match situations, as well as tests in live matches,” said FIFA. “This milestone in the goalline technology process, which began in 2011, means that the two companies now have official authorisation to install their respective goal-line technology systems worldwide.” Football’s rule-making body, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), approved the use of the technology in July following a series of incidents in which referees failed to see that the ball had crossed the goal-line. The most infamous ‘phantom goals’ were Frank Lampard’s effort for England in the World Cup second round match against Germany in 2010 and Sulley Muntari’s ‘goal’ for AC Milan in a top-of-thetable Serie A clash against Juventus last season. FIFA said both systems still had to pass tests in stadiums where they had been installed before they could be used for official matches. Goal-line technology is due to make its debut at the Club World Cup in Japan in December. FIFA plans to use the GoalRef system in one of the two stadiums used for the competition and Hawk-Eye in the other.

Hernandez double sparks a fine United comeback at Old Trafford By Simon Stone JAVIER Hernandez was Manchester United’s Champions League hero last night as the Red Devils hauled themselves back from two goals down to beat Braga at Old Trafford. Approaching the 26th anniversary of Sir Alex Ferguson’s appointment as Red Devils manager, the comeback was a suitably fitting way to preserve his side’s 100 per cent record and means, barring a complete collapse in their final three games, they will advance to next spring’s knockout stage. Last night it took less than two minutes to surrender the initiative. And they fell further behind before Hernandez struck, the Mexican capping a fine display by nodding home the winner from Tom Cleverley’s cross 15 minutes from time. It had been established in the five times United had
Manchester United 3 Braga 2 gone behind since Michael Carrick had been eased out of central defence that he was not responsible for his side’s repeated inability not to find themselves playing catch-up. Ferguson again went for Carrick as Jonny Evans’ partner, presumably on the basis Braga would not offer much of a physical threat. Carrick lacks defensive nous though, and having shepherded Eder to the by-line, his failure to trap the Portugal international there was suicidal. After turning sharply, Eder scampered towards the goal before cutting a cross back to provide Alan with an easy finish. This would have been bad enough. The fact Braga were already in front raised serious concerns about United’s abil-
ity to pull through. Barely a minute had elapsed when Alan pulled to the far post and climbed above Alex Buttner, replacing Patrice Evra for the first European game of his entire career, and steered it past David de Gea. Predictably, a team skippered by Wayne Rooney and including Robin van Persie and a host of other stellar attacking talents, the hosts were a force at the other end. A wise advantage by Serbian referee Milorad Mazic allowed Shinji Kagawa to profit from a foul on Van Persie, crossing for Hernandez, who nodded home. The pair would have combined to haul United level had an offside flag not been raised against Kagawa as he darted on to Van Persie’s through ball before rolling another cross into Hernandez’s path. In hauling off Kagawa and introducing Nani at the break,
the Scot was also signalling the diamond he feels could revolutionise United needs a bit more polishing before it is ready for public display. The transformation was immediate as United sped down the flanks, pinning their opponents back. As the crosses fizzed across Braga’s goal, the visitors’ defending became increasingly desperate. When Evans took a fresh air swipe at Van Persie’s corner, the attempted clearance cannoned back off Elderson, allowing the Northern Ireland defender a second chance, which he duly prodded in. From that moment it was only a matter of time before United got their winner. Tom Cleverley provided it with a superb, deep cross from the right touchline. Hernandez, whose movement was akin to that he showed during his debut season, peeled away and headed home.

Shakhtar down champs Chelsea John Terry makes impressive return a year after race row From Ben Rumsby

Goal scorer Fernandinho kicks the ball in last night’s clash
OHN Terry’s Chelsea return went awry last night as the European champions crashed to their first major defeat of the season at Shakhtar Donetsk. The Blues were ruthlessly punished by Alex Teixeira and Fernandinho goals at the Donbass Arena, despite Oscar’s late consolation, as Shakhtar deservedly took charge of Champions League Group E in the first of what could be a crucial double-header. Chelsea were spared dropping out of the qualification places by Juventus’ shock draw at Nordsjaelland, but they will need to do much better at Stamford Bridge in two weeks to avoid doing so. Terry’s first appearance since accepting his racism ban got off to the worst possible start as he unwittingly set up Shakhtar’s opener inside three minutes. But he was arguably the least culpable Chelsea player on a night which cost the Barclays Premier League leaders dearly and a risible performance from Fernando Torres scuppered their hopes of a comeback. The defeat was their first since their UEFA Super Cup thrashing by Atletico Madrid and the performance was almost as alarming at times as they were carved open by an outstanding Shakhtar side. The build-up to the game
Shakhtar Donetsk 2 Chelsea 1 was predictably dominated by Terry’s return, the timing of which was quite extraordinary. It not only coincided with his four-match domestic ban for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand, but came a year to the day since the offence took place and also saw him take part in an initiative in which he wore a ‘Unite Against Racism’ armband. The race row was the lowest point of Terry’s alreadychequered career, making last night’s game arguably the biggest test yet of his legendary ability to thrive under pressure. It was also against opponents on a quite extraordinary run, Shakhtar having not lost for exactly 11 months while winning their last 21 league games. And it was a nightmare start for the defender as the home side scored from their first attack after two minutes and 53 seconds, Luiz Adriano’s shot hitting Terry’s elbow and falling perfectly for Teixeira to slot past a helpless Petr Cech. In what was a fiercely-contested game in a fizzing atmosphere, Oscar tried to respond with a tame low drive before Willian almost lived up to his manager’s promise to make Chelsea pay for not signing him by drilling wide.
That was in the 15th minute and it immediately got worse for the visitors when Frank Lampard went down injured, forcing an early end to his record 100th European appearance for the club and the introduction of Eden Hazard. Ashley Cole was then needlessly booked for dissent as the relentless action surged from end to end, Torres wasting a great chance either to score or set up a team-mate before Terry twice produced vital blocks to prevent Shakhtar adding to their lead. His early misfortune aside, Terry was having a stellar game, repeatedly reading attacks. But he could not stop Willian brilliantly setting up Henrik Mkhitaryan, Cole doing enough to force Shakhtar’s goal machine to shoot too close to Cech. That sparked a flurry of chaotic corners, which Chelsea defended frantically and saw Cech produce a wonder-save to deny Tomas Hubschman from point-blank range after Oscar inadvertently set up the midfielder. Torres’ weak hooked volley from Branislav Ivanovic’s cross summed up a half in which he proved a real liability, a theme that continued after the restart. Chelsea were otherwise looking capable of equalising, Juan Mata firing over after good work from Hazard, who immediately produced a horrendous gaffe to gift Sha-
khtar their second goal in the 52nd minute. He was pickpocketed in the centre-circle by Fernandinho, who fed Adriano and both raced goalwards for the former to slot past Cech. Hazard tried to make amends with a low drive tipped wide by Andriy Pyatov, who then palmed a Ramires blockbuster behind for a corner. Shakhtar weathered the storm, although Olexandr Kucher was booked for cynically bringing down Hazard and John Obi Mikel hooked over a chance for his first ever Chelsea goal. Torres was finally withdrawn for Daniel Sturridge with 20 minutes remaining and Mkhitaryan twice went close to making it 3-0. Hazard scuffed a great chance to make him rue the miss, Hubschman almost bundled home a third for Shakhtar and Hazard was thwarted one-on-one with Pyatov. David Luiz and Hubschman were both booked in the closing stages, which saw Oscar set up a tense finish two minutes from time when he swept home Ivanovic’s cross.
