RENCH PRESIDENT Francois Hollande urged international lenders yesterday to avoid imposing “too draconian” measures on Cyprus in exchange for an aid package for the country. Speaking after a onehour meeting with President Demetris Christofias in Paris, Hollande said he hoped a deal would be clinched on bailout terms with the so-called troika of lenders at a Eurogroup meeting of finance ministers on November 12. “France naturally supports a solution, in order for Cyprus to overcome the difficulties it faces today in its banking sector and return soon to growth,” Hollande said. “The aim is in the coming Eurogroup meeting to find the best solution not only for Cyprus but for Europe,” he added. The parties should reach a solution enabling the troika (IMF, European Central Bank and European Commis-
sion) to help Cyprus emerge from its difficulties without “imposing solutions that would be too draconian and prevent a return to growth within a relatively brief time period”, he said. Cyprus applied for an EU bailout in June after its two largest banks suffered huge losses on a write-down of their Greek debt holdings. Christofias has said the island needs support “urgently”, while reports suggest the country could run out of money before the end of the year if no aid is forthcoming. While negotiations with the troika continued last week, ratings agency Standard & Poor’s downgraded Cyprus government debt three notches to ‘B’ from ‘BB’ with a negative outlook, pushing it deeper into junk territory. S&P said electoral considerations had contributed to “policy inertia” in Cyprus and added to uncertainty about its banks. TURN TO PAGE 3

Ex Italy PM Berlusconi sentenced to four years jail for tax fraud AN Italian court yesteday sentenced former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to four years in jail for tax fraud in connection with the purchase of broadcasting rights by his Mediaset television company. Berlusconi has the right to appeal the ruling two more times before the sentence becomes definitive and will not be jailed unless the final appeal
is upheld. Prosecutors had asked for a jail sentence of three years and eight months. The court also ordered damages provisionally set at €10 million ($12.96 million) to be paid by Berlusconi and his co-defendants to tax authorities. The ruling comes two days after Berlusconi, 76, confirmed he would
not run in next year’s elections as the leader of his centre-right People of Freedom (PDL) party. A separate trial over accusations that Berlusconi paid for sex with an underaged prostitute is currently being heard in Milan. He denies all charges against him. The four-time prime minister and other Mediaset executives stood
accused of inflating the price paid for TV rights via offshore companies controlled by Berlusconi, and skimming off part of the money to create illegal slush funds. The probe focused on TV and cinema rights Berlusconi’s holding company Fininvest bought via offshore companies from US groups for €470 million between 1994 and 1999.

THURSDAY night’s Europa League match between AEL Limassol and Turkish team Fenerbahce went without a hitch, with Nicosia police chief Kypros Michaelides yesterday calling security measures a “complete success”. Fenerbahce coach Aykut Kocaman was equally impressed, saying AEL showed maturity and great hospitality. Speaking through a translator, Kocaman praised AEL – which lost 1-0 in the match – for its maturity and hospitality. He said despite the minor problems, things went well and promised the same behaviour would be shown in the second leg of the match in Istanbul on November 8. Michaelides congratulated fans of both teams. “Congratulations to the fans of AEL, as well as the Turkish Cypriot fans of Fenerbahce, who showed maturity, and whose behaviour generally helped so that the match was carried out without incident,” said Michaelides. He said the teams’ officials also fully cooperated with police, contributing to the suc-
Police pulled out all the stops to make sure there was no trouble at the game cessful outcome. “We truly feel proud, because we proved once again that we are a European state, which can police football matches, as well as any other significant event, and we proved wrong all those malicious forecasts waiting for us to fail,” said Michaelides.
He admitted there were some minor incidents, which however did not mar the final result. In one of these incidents, two men from Turkey were caught trying to cross over from the Ayios Dhometios checkpoint and barred entry. Another Turkish Cypriot was
stopped as he had an arrest warrant pending against him, in connection with burglaries in the Famagusta area in 2007. And during the match, some Fenerbahce fans attempted to bring out a ‘TRNC’ flag, but they were caught in time and it was confiscated.
Troika would reduce public-private pay gap Difference now is 39 per cent but it could be 16 with troika proposals compared to 34 per cent with state’s By Jacqueline Agathocleous EVEN if the troika’s austerity measures are enforced, there will still be a huge gap between pay in the public and private sectors, a study by the University of Cyprus’ Economic Research Centre (CypERC) has shown. According to the study, if no austerity measures had been imposed last year, the pay gap in 2012 would be a staggering 46 per cent difference in favour of the public sector. “The austerity packages implemented in 2011 reduces this difference to 39 per cent,” it said. It added that if implemented, the measures proposed by the troika would further reduce the gap to 16 per cent – and 5 per cent if the 13th salary was abolished. However, if the government’s counterproposals are accepted, the gap would be reduced to just 34 per cent. Based on these results, CypERC, said that all the measures taken and proposed are in the right direction in terms of correcting the imbalance between the level of pay in the public and private sector, especially the meas-
ures proposed by the troika. But it added that neither the troika’s nor the government’s measures fully correct the imbalance in pay and some professions such as teachers, and unskilled workers in the public sector would continue to be paid more than their counterparts in the private sector. CypERC said it had simulated the distributional effects of the proposed economic adjustment programmes. “It is estimated that both the measures proposed by troika and those proposed by the government, on average, reduce the gap in pay between the public and private sector - more so the troika’s measures - and the inequality in the distribution of income,” said the study. But it added that in both cases, nothing is done to align the structure of pay in the public with that in the private sector. “The findings highlight the point that while many talk about the importance of using the contemplated economic adjustment programmes to promote growth, few appear to understand that the discrepancies between pay and productivity in the public
sector are at the root of the current economic crisis, and even fewer appear to realise the damage inflicted on the economy from using the public sector pay to redistribute income in favour of particular population groups even when this is done in good faith and in the name of social justice,” said CypERC. Regarding other aspects of the economy, the university’s research centre’s latest forecasts indicated that the Cypriot economy would remain in recession throughout 2012 and, at least, for the first half of 2013. For the third and fourth quarter of 2012, GDP growth is forecasted at -1.8 per cent and -2.0 per cent respectively. GDP growth for 2012 was projected at -1.9 per cent. “The forecast for the first and second quarter of 2013 remains negative at -1.4 per cent and -1.1 per cent, respectively; hence, a further contraction in activity of -1.3 per cent is forecasted for the first half of 2013.” Furthermore, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI), which summarises firms’ and consumers’ perceptions and expectations about economic
conditions, remains well below the European Union and Euro Area averages. “Further decline of ESI in the third quarter of 2012 suggests that the Cypriot economy has entered a period of prolonged recession,” said CypERC. The forecasts for GDP growth presented in the study were based on the most recent National Accounts data and did not incorporate the effects of economic adjustment scenarios linked to financial aid from the troika, beyond those already captured by leading indicators included in the estimation of forecasts. “As such they are accompanied by [too many] substantial risks to be optimistic, especially those for the last quarter of 2012 and the first two quarters of 2013,” it said. This is due to further loss of business and consumer confidence due to the prolonged uncertainty about the implementation and content of the economic adjustment programme, the tightening of domestic credit conditions due to banks’ recapitalisation needs, further reduction in consumption and investment activity due to fiscal consolidation measures.

Home Two sought in suspected car theft ring POLICE ARE looking for two people in connection with charges of car theft and car arson, believed to be linked to an organised ring who steal cars, take them north and sell them whole or in parts. Omar Suleyman, 19, from Cyprus, and Imprachim Chalil, 25, from Syria are sought by police for offences believed to be related to the arrest of an 18-year-old Nicosia resident on Tuesday night who attempted to cross to the occupied areas with a stolen car. As the 18-year-old foreign resident tried to cross through Ayios Dhometios checkpoint, police discovered that the vehicle’s number plate was fake, while further investigations showed the car in question had been reported stolen. The recent spate of car thefts had led the force to draw up an organised action plan, which Nicosia Police Chief Kypros Michaelides said resulted in Tuesday’s arrest. After being interrogated, Michaelides said the 18year-old named two other men. Police call on anyone with information on the whereabouts of Suleyman or Chalil to contact Nicosia CID, their nearest police station or the Citizen’s Hotline on 1460.

For his part, Christofias said the two presidents are in agreement on how to deal with the financial crisis, as well as on the measures that need to be adopted to generate growth and create jobs in the EU. Home Thousands more voters expected in ‘frugal’ elections A case of By Jacqueline Agathocleous THE INTERIOR ministry’s electoral office is expecting some 24,000 new voters to register for February’s presidential elections, raising the voting population to around 544,000. According to Chief Returning Officer Demetris Demetriou, efforts are now centred on getting more people to register and arrange for the voting centres to be set up abroad. “We already sent around 23,000 to 24,000 letters to those who were born
from 1990 onwards, to get them to register on the electoral list,” Demetriou told the Cyprus News Agency yesterday. He said three letters were sent, in April, July and the most recent on October 15. Demetriou said there were roughly 520,000 voters in the 2008 elections, with the number now expecting to rise to around 544,000. He said he did not get the response he expected following the first two letters sent to prospective voters. “But following the last batch, I see threefigure numbers of registrations on the electoral list every day, so I estimate
that for this three-month period, there will be over 10,000 new registrations,” said Demetriou. He said no changes were expected in the number of Turkish Cypriot voters, as only those living in the free areas have a right to vote. European residents do not have a right to vote in these presidential elections, said Demetriou. He said 2013’s elections would be carried out as frugally as possible, taking into account that the finance ministry approved €8 million to spend, as opposed to the initially requested
€10 million. But even that could be reduced. “The initial funds we requested were in the range of €10 million, but after consultations with the finance ministry, this was restricted to €8 million, which was approved by the cabinet,” he explained. “Now we need to see what parliament thinks.” Demetriou predicted some serious reductions in pay for those working in the voting centres, as well as sponsorships to newspapers and television channels, and said he hoped the funds would not drop further.
Police look into claims against bus company Probe into claims of forgery, fraud and embezzlement By Poly Pantelides and Stefanos Evripidou THE POLICE are conducting investigations at the Nicosia Bus Company OSEL in connection with possible charges of embezzlement, keeping false accounts, forgery, and even money laundering, said police chief Michalis Papageorgiou yesterday. He clarified that it was still early days as police had to sift through confiscated account books and receipts to see whether the charges made by a member of the public stand up to scrutiny. He did not rule out more investigations and even arrests. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a police event, Papageorgiou said police received a complaint from someone regarding the possible charge of embezzlement at OSEL. “After taking statements, we have conducted two searches (of premises) and taken plenty of documents which we are evaluating.” The police chief said the in-
dications are that there was embezzlement but there is no proof yet. “We are exploring the possibility of keeping false accounts, forging documents to obtain money and money laundering,” he said. “In one case, reference is made to a specific person who may have embezzled tens of thousands of euro, but that is not the only charge made,” said Papageorgiou, adding, “The indication is that there are receipts for fuel that was never used and for the maintenance of vehicles that were never maintained.” OSEL chairman Iordanis Iordanou said yesterday that the investigations are focused on allegedly forged invoices for services provided to the company by third parties. “The police said they received reports about forged invoices,” Iordanou said. Members of the financial crimes investigation office confiscated invoices on Wednesday morning, which were handed over by OSEL, he said. Iordanou maintained OSEL

Police had to sift through confiscated OSEL account books and receipts has no involvement in any foul play and said he “did not know” the exact nature of the investigation. The bus company boss said police had – as of yesterday – taken statements only from him and “two or three [OSEL] employees”. Nicosia’s public bus network was overhauled in 2010 as part of an islandwide revamp of the public system. OSEL was created to run the Nicosia public network with individual shareholders making up the network and charging the company to use their buses and run routes. The government pays companies a rate per kilometre and leases the buses. The new public transport system has been dogged by disagreement over how much the government pays the companies. OSEL has a tenyear contract with the state
as of 2010, as do the other five companies covering Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, Famagusta and intercity routes. The agreement was signed during the tenure of the communication minister at the time, EDEK MP Nicos Nicolaides, while his successor, Erato Kozakou Marcoullis asked for a review of the system. Her successor, Eftyhmios Flourentzos, took a closer look in February during an islandwide strike. Bus companies had left their staff unpaid, claiming they did not have sufficient funds because the state had not paid them their agreed subsidies The 2012 budget for public transport was reduced to €45 million from €68 million, with bus companies warning at the time that this would only cover fuel costs. Last month, parliament

passed a supplementary budget of €21 million because the money ran out. Speaking to the Cyprus Mail last week, Iordanou said the ongoing economic crisis had resulted in an increase in passengers as more people sought cheaper forms of transport. Meanwhile, the bus strike covering the Nicosia district planned for next Monday, October 29, was called off yesterday after a request from the labour ministry’s labour relations department. The ministry has offered to mediate between the two sides at a meeting next Tuesday, a proposal which the unions accepted. The strike was initially called to protest against the backlog of payments owed by OSEL to the drivers’ provident fund, health insurance and union fees.
interwoven interests By George Psyllides THE attorney-general yesterday entered the fray concerning the debt write-offs of companies linked to AKEL, suggesting it was an unacceptable form of interwoven interests. Petros Clerides said it was condemnable if the write-off was a gratuitous gesture on behalf of the bank. “Because this is a case of interwoven interests -- and it looks like it is present, not only now, it always existed – of political and economic powers and others,” the attorneygeneral told the state broadcaster. “It is very well known that a person with economic power can also acquire political power.” Clerides was commenting on reports that on September 5, 2006, a gentlemen’s agreement was made between then Bank of Cyprus manager (now finance minister) Vassos Shiarly, on behalf of the bank, and Antonis Papanicolaou, director of Delta Trading Ltd, and AKEL secretariat member in charge of economic affairs, Venizelos Zanettou, whereby the assets of Delta Trading Ltd were transferred to Delta (Distributors) Ltd. It also provided for the forced sale of a plot of land, owned by Delta Trading, in Limassol, the writing off of €6.5 million owed to the bank and the subsequent removal of all personal guarantors from the loan agreement. Clerides said writing-off debts was not a crime, but if it took place because of the connections between politicians and the financiers, then it was unacceptable. Main opposition DISY deputy Marios Mavrides said such acts were immoral. “Is there transparency? Is there accountability on the part of the bank? Was there political pressure?” Mavrides said. Sunday’s report followed a similar one in August that the Bank of Cyprus had written off a debt of €2.7m owed by another AKEL-controlled company, Tamasos Enterprises Ltd. AKEL has denied having any official link to the companies. The party’s spokesman said yesterday the affair was an attempt to undo AKEL’s clean image. He also said certain bank executives, and people who want to provide them with cover, were trying to muddy the waters. “AKEL was the party that raised their (bankers’) responsibilities,” Giorgos Loukaides said.

Home Etihad updates Larnaca flight schedule
Popular Bank slashes wages Union describes the decision as ‘arbitrary’
ETIHAD Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has updated its Larnaca-Abu Dhabi flight schedule. The move will continue to see the UAE flag carrier operate three weekly services to and from Larnaca, with the switching of the carrier’s Sunday flights to Monday, effective October 29. John Rees Evans, Etihad Airways Country Manager in Cyprus, said: “Improved travel options for business and leisure passengers going directly to Abu Dhabi and connecting onwards to more than 80 of our destinations across the GCC, Indian Subcontinent, North Asia and Australia are the reasons behind our decision to update the schedule. The new flight schedule will also give our leisure guests travelling from Cyprus the opportunity to experience weekend breaks in the exciting UAE capital - Abu Dhabi”. Etihad Airways operates a two-cabin Airbus A320 aircraft between Larnaca and Abu Dhabi. This configuration means 816 seats a week – 96 in Pearl Business, and 720 in Coral Economy. Flight EY093 flies every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It departs from Abu Dhabi at 09:34 and arrives in Larnaca at 11:45. The return flight, EY094, departs from Larnaca at 14:15 and arrives in Abu Dhabi at 19:25, local time. For flight schedules and bookings, visit www.etihad. com/cy or a local travel agent.
On watch for illegal tree cutters AUTHORITIES yesterday said they would be intensifying efforts to stop illegal tree cutting after an increasing number of people have taken to cutting them for firewood. The Forestry department said in an announcement that in order to accommodate people’s needs it would be offering firewood at reasonable prices, from material gathered after fires or cutting trees as part of forest maintenance. The department said that it has already made available over 2,000 cubic metres of firewood over two months. But alongside measures to accommodate people, the police, the Game Fund and other bodies have all committed to becoming more vigilant, adding more patrols and frequenting known routes used by illegal tree cutters, the Forestry Department said. “The effort is not geared towards creating problems in mountainous [areas] but to stop illegal tree cutting… by some ‘clever people’ for trading or satisfying their needs.”
By George Psyllides THE Popular Bank has decided to cut salaries by up to 17 per cent and also reduce allowances as part of its effort to restructure following its nationalisation earlier this year, it emerged yesterday. In a circular obtained by the media yesterday, the troubled lender’s management announced that it had decided to introduce staggered cuts between 4.9 per cent and 17 per cent as well as reduce and in some cases scrap certain allowances starting this month. Popular was forced to ask for €1.8 billion in state assistance after taking heavy losses from its exposure to Greek debt and being unable to raise the necessary regulatory capital through private funds. “We are fully aware of the unpleasant nature of the measures as well as their effect on your income,” the

management said. “But it is exceptionally important for us to work together” to secure the group’s future prospects. The measures were drafted without the agreement of bank employee union ETYK, as the two sides failed to come up with a common proposal, the lender said. But ETYK’s positions were taken into consideration, the bank said. The union described the decision as “arbitrary,” suggesting that it had been taken in advance, ignoring its recommendations. ETYK said it will hold meetings with the employees and decide accordingly. Beyond the salary cuts, the lender informed employees that it would be cutting various allowances by up to 60 per cent and scrapping others, like the marriage allowance. Overtime will be compensated with extra days off. The lender said it was also restricting use of compa-
ny cars by executives, and phones. Employees will be allowed to restructure their loans in a bid to lighten the burden while a scheme providing for interest-free loans and a bonus for acquiring professional qualifications will remain in effect. Following its nationalisation, Popular is undergoing a transitional adjustment period with a restructuring plan aiming to transform the group’s efficiency, restore profitability, further strengthen its capital base and enhance its prospects. In Greece, the first phase of the scheduled rationalisation and branch network reduction has been completed -- 23 branches have already been closed or merged while the network was fully reorganised by sector to ensure sound and more efficient management of the clientele. In Cyprus 10 branches have closed since the end of 2011.

Home Suspect in Palestinian boy’s rape declines entering plea at hearing By Jacqueline Agathocleous THE 37-YEAR-OLD man from Larnaca accused of brutally raping a 10-year-old Palestinian boy in August yesterday refrained from entering a plea on the charges brought against him. He will respond on November 15, following a request by his legal team, which was accepted by the state prosecution. The charges include illegal intercourse with a person under the age of 13, abduction, assault against a policeman and carrying weapons. The defence team requested all the evidence and witness material so it can be examined before the 37-year-old enters his
plea. His lawyer also told court that his client, who is currently at the Central Prisons, was ambushed by other inmates – with the approval of prison guards – who shaved his head. The alleged rape of the boy took place on August 1. The Palestinian boy was treated in hospital in a state of shock, having had to walk from the scene of the rape, along Phinikoudes to Larnaca’s police headquarters at the end of the seafront. The Cyprus Mail was told at the time that the boy was some distance away from his home on his bike at around 9pm in the evening, when a Greek-speaking man on a motorbike stopped him and his friend saying he wanted to show them his dog. The boy was reluctant to go with the man, who however forced him to get on the bike. The man then brought the boy to
a rooftop and raped him there under the threat of a knife. The 10-year-old subsequently walked to the police station and told officers what had happened to him. The police called his parents and then took his statement, which was corroborated after an examination from a state pathologist. It was yesterday reported that the suspect had been convicted in 1994 to 15 years in prison for abducting and raping a Chinese woman. He is also said to have charges pending against him for sexually harassing two underage boys in Nicosia, for which he paid €50,000 bail to be released. There are currently 21 witnesses willing to testify against him.
Angry and concerned over pervert’s release ‘How can we let a paedophile, who admitted to his crime, walk free? Who can guarantee he will not hurt other kids’ By Jacqueline Agathocleous THE POLICE force has come under heavy criticism for releasing a 67-year-old man last week, who admitted to sexually molesting a young relative of his, and who lives in the same neighbourhood as his alleged victim – and possibly other vulnerable children. The matter came to light when AKEL deputy Irene Charalambidou announced she had information the man was released following a “political intervention”. She said she could not understand how someone who admitted to molesting a child was not kept in custody until his trial. The case brought to the forefront the complete lack of a legal framework surrounding paedophiles, with the child commissioner blasting government and parliament for failing to protect the island’s children. Limassol police chief Ioannis Soteriades attempted to justify the force’s actions. “The investigation into the matter was completed within a day and the file was sent to the Attorney-general, so a remand was not deemed necessary,” he told the Cyprus Mail. Soteriades claimed the police and social services had taken measures to protect the child, but could not say what these measures were. “Patrols were sent to the area and there is no issue of the child being molested again,” was his offered explanation. Asked why someone who admitted to sexually molest-
ing a child was allowed to go home to the same neighbourhood where his victim and her family lived, and where most likely other children were living, the officer said suspected paedophiles were only remanded under “certain conditions”. “When, for example, investigations have not wrapped,” Soteriades explained. “We collected all the information, all the witness accounts, the child was examined by a pathologist immediately, so our job was done.” But he claimed that certain restrictions were imposed on the 67-year-old suspect, without however providing details. So far, the media has reported that the man “allegedly admitted” to the crime. However Soteriades confirmed to the paper that he did indeed admit to the crime.
CONFESSED “He did admit to the charges against him, this is a fact,” he said. He went on to say these crimes are condemnable, which was why the police acted straight away and the investigation wrapped within a day. “Justice has taken over now,” said the officer. But Charalambidou insisted something was amiss. “This is the first case of its kind, where someone was arrested and admitted to being a paedophile, is in the victim’s family circle, yet was not remanded,” she told the Cyprus Mail. She contradicted Soteriades’ claim that the investigation had wrapped. “On the one hand they are saying the man was not remanded as the investigation was com-

pleted, yet they then state the file is not complete and evidence was not sufficient to warrant a remand. It is a contradiction.” But Charalambidou added, “The question is, how can we let a paedophile, who admitted to his crime, walk free? And as his condition was not assessed by an expert, who can guarantee that he will not hurt other children?” Asked why she was refusing to name the politician who intervened, Charalambidou said the child’s familial circle was very well known, while the alleged victim and perpetrator were close relatives. “Any detail that gets out could jeopardise the child and I do not want to do that. Cyprus is very small. My main concern is the child.” She admitted the problems all boiled down to Cyprus’ inadequate legal framework when it came to child sex abuse. “I submitted a proposal in December last year and it has only just been tabled for discussion at the House Legal Affairs Committee,” said Charalambidou. It provides, among others, for the penalty to increase from 20 years in prison to life, when the victim is under 14 years old. It also aims to introduce a system for convicted paedophiles, ensuring they are assessed during their prison term and offered therapy, so as to ensure they are safe to be released back into society. Child commissioner Leda Koursoumba, who has been pushing for these law amendments for a long time, was infuriated by this recent case. “I was informed about the
details from the deputy police chief, but the explanations I was given were absolutely not satisfactory,” Koursoumba told the Cyprus Mail. “He said because the man admitted to the crime, he could be released until the trial.” She said she had had enough of politicians only making a fuss when something like this happened – as was the case with a 10-yearold Palestinian boy who was lured to a rooftop in Larnaca in August and raped by a 37year-old Greek Cypriot man.
GUNS BLAZING “Everyone comes out, all guns blazing, shouting about what should be or what should not be. Wherever there is a camera, they rush to stand in front of it and give their opinion. Then they retreat to their offices and forget all about it,” she said. “This is unacceptable and it is time it stopped. Measures need to be taken, and they need to be taken now.” “Cyprus has delayed taking measures to protect its children for a very long time,” said Koursoumba. “We need to start introducing prevention measures, inform families and empower children. A child that is informed is empowered. We need more child friendly justice.” She said the need for action was all the more important now, with the economic crisis. “Now with the economic crisis, where families are facing serious survival problems, they are even more distanced from their children, without this being their fault.”

Six UK care home workers jailed for abuse of residents
Malala ‘will rise again’
Five others receive suspended sentences
THE father of a Pakistani girl who was shot in the head by the the Taliban for advocating girls’ education said yesterday his daughter was strong and would “rise again” to pursue her dreams after receiving treatment in a British hospital. Malala Yousufzai, 15, was flown from Pakistan to Birmingham to receive specialist treatment after the October 9 attack which drew widespread international condemnation. She has become a powerful symbol of resistance to the radical Islamist group’s effort to deny women an education. Her father, Ziauddin Yousufzai, and other family members flew to Britain on Thursday to help their daughter’s recovery. “They wanted to kill her. But she fell temporarily. She will rise again. She will stand again,” he said, his voice wavering and breaking with emotion as he spoke. “It’s a miracle for us ... She was in a very bad condition,” he told reporters, sitting alongside his son. “She is improving with encouraging speed.”
The 11 Winterbourne View hospital staff members were caught in a BBC Panorama sting by a reporter with a hidden camera posing as a carer
By Rod Minchin and Emma Hallett SIX members of staff caught abusing vulnerable residents at a care home by an undercover journalist were jailed yesterday. Five others were given suspended sentences by a judge at Bristol Crown Court, who condemned the abuse they meted out to disabled patients at the Winterbourne View private hospital, at Hambrook, South Gloucestershire. The 11 - nine support workers and two nurses - were caught in a BBC Panorama sting by a reporter with a hidden camera posing as a carer. His shocking footage showed residents being slapped, soaked in water, trapped under chairs, taunted, sworn at and having their hair pulled and eyes poked. On one shocking occasion three support workers forcibly held down a resident while a nurse forced para-
cetamol into her mouth. Whistleblower Terry Bryan, a former nurse at the home, went to the BBC with his concerns after his complaints to owner Castlebeck and care watchdogs were ignored. Journalist Joseph Carey recorded shocking footage during a five-week investigation in February and March last year and the programme was shown the following June. A serious case review published in August criticised
Darlington-based Castlebeck Ltd, which owned the hospital, for putting profits before humanity. The 26-bed hospital opened in 2006 and by 2010 had a turnover of £3.7 million. The average weekly fee for a patient was £3,500. Prosecutor Kerry Barker said care watchdogs failed to act on repeated warnings of “inhumane, cruel and hate-fuelled treatment” of patients. “The so-called restraint techniques were used to in-
Oil executive murder investigated BELGIAN prosecutors are investigating the murder of a British oil executive who was shot and killed in unexplained circumstances in front of his wife as they walked to their car after dinner at an Italian restaurant in Brussels. Nicholas Mockford, who worked for US oil giant ExxonMobil , was shot on October 14 after an evening meal, but prosecutors declined to say if they were investigating the case as a possible contract killing. A woman who lived opposite where the couple had parked their car said she had heard three shots and then called the police. When she went out to investigate, she recognised Mockford’s wife as a customer of her husband’s hairdresser. “She was clearly shocked and she said that they had demanded money, money, car, car. Those were the words she heard. One would
Nicholas Mockford worked for US oil giant ExxonMobil imagine it was a car-jacking,” she said. Police initially suspected Mockford had been killed in a failed car hijacking, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters, though the couple’s Lexus sports utility vehicle had not been taken after the shooting.
Marcello Minacapelli, the owner of the Italian restaurant, said the couple, who were not regulars, had left at about 10pm on the Sunday evening, but he had not seen the incident. Brussels prosecutors said they were not prepared to comment further on the details or circumstances of the case until the perpetrators were caught. Mockford, 59, was a manager within the chemicals arm of ExxonMobil and had worked over a period of 38 years in Britain, Belgium and Singapore. ExxonMobil Belgium confirmed he had worked as a department head at its office in Machelen, on the outskirts of Brussels. No one was willing to comment when Reuters called Mockford’s family home in Grimbergen, an affluent town just north of the capital Brussels.
Russia opposition leader charged with plotting riots RUSSIAN investigators yesterday charged protest leader Sergei Udaltsov with plotting riots, in a case that has raised alarm among rights activists and Western governments. The Federal Investigative Committee formally charged Udaltsov in morning questioning, after a pro-Kremlin TV channel broadcast footage from a hidden camera which it said showed him conspiring with a Georgian politician. Udaltsov faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted in the case, which he and other
Kremlin critics say is part of a tightening clampdown on dissent since Vladimir Putin started a fresh six-year presidential term in May amid a wave of protests. Unlike two lesser-known activists charged in the same case, Udaltsov was not detained but has been ordered to remain in Moscow pending further investigation and possible trial. One of the two, Leonid Razvozzhayev, said he was abducted in Ukraine last week and tortured. He has formally retracted his confession, his lawyer Mark Feigin said on Thursday.
flict pain, humiliate patients and bully them into compliance with the demands of their carers,” Barker said. “It is the Crown’s case that generally the offences were motivated by hostility to-
wards the victims based on their disabilities.” Barker told the court that the five residents, Simone Blake, Simon Tovey, Louise Bissett, Louisa Deville and Lorraine Guildford, suffered greatly at the hands of the defendants. Among the hours of graphic footage played to the court during the sentencing hearing was support worker Wayne Rogers telling Miss Blake: “Do you want me to get a cheese grater and grate your face off? Do you want me to turn you into a giant pepperoni?” He also slapped Tovey across the cheek and told him: “Do you want a scrap? Do you want a fight? Go on and I will bite your bloody face off.” Colleague Alison Dove said Blake “loved pain” and then told her: “Simone, come here and I’ll punch your face.” Dove also threatened Bissett when she broke a window in the lounge with a chair. She snarled at her: “Listen, in future I’m going to let you sit on the f****** floor, cos you don’t deserve a chair.”

‘Wen family has massive wealth’
Chinese Premier Wen
THE family of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, a leader known for his humble roots and compassion for ordinary people, has accumulated massive wealth during his time in power, The New York Times reported yesterday. “A review of corporate and regulatory records indicates that the prime minister’s relatives, some of whom have a knack for aggressive deal-making, including his wife, have controlled assets worth at least $2.7 billion,” it said. The Times’ websites in English and Chinese were blocked in China yesterday morning, and searches for The New York Times as well as the names of Wen’s children and wife were blocked on China’s main Twitter-like microblog service. Death toll in Myanmar violence reaches 112
Suicide bomber kills 40 at Afghan mosque
THE number of people killed in six days of unrest in western Myanmar reached at least 112 yesterday as security forces used deadly force to break up the worst sectarian violence between Buddhists and Muslims in years. The United Nations warned Myanmar’s fledgling democracy could be “irreparably damaged” by the clashes, which come just five months after communal unrest killed more than 80 people and displaced at least 75,000 in the same region Ethnic Buddhist Rakhines told Reuters they were shot by security forces struggling to impose order on Rakhine State, where violence with Rohingya Muslims has engulfed several districts, including Kyaukpyu where a multibillion-dollar ChinaMyanmar pipeline starts. The escalating death toll, which has doubled from Wednesday, severely tests the reformist government’s ability to contain historic ethnic and religious tensions suppressed during nearly a half century of military rule that ended last year. “The fabric of social order could be irreparably damaged and the reform and opening up process being currently pursued by the government is likely to be jeopardised,” a spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement that described the violence as “deeply troubling”.

$120 million five years ago, the newspaper said. The Times said it presented its findings to the government for comment. The Foreign Ministry declined to respond. Members of Wen’s family also declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment, the Times said. The private lives of Chinese leaders as well as their assets are kept under wraps, with personal details considered state secrets. Still, cases against lower-level officials, often exposed by Chinese media, and reports on senior officials by Western and Hong Kong news organisations, underscore the extent to which those with power profit from their standing. Occasionally, top officials are caught and prosecuted.
A SUICIDE bomber killed at least 40 people in a mosque in Afghanistan’s relatively peaceful north yesterday as worshippers gathered for prayers marking the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, police officials said. The attack in Maimana, capital of Faryab province, also wounded 40, regional police chief General Abdul Khaliq Aqsai said, pinning the blame on the Taliban. A Taliban spokesman said they were investigating to find out who was responsible. “The suicide bomber detonated explosives when our countrymen were congratulating each other on the Eid holiday,” said Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, spokesman for the police in the Afghan north, adding that almost half of the dead were police. He said Aqsai appeared to be the target. “As soon as the police chief got in his vehicle, the bomber detonated his explosives,” Ahmadzai said About 20 bodies, some in police uniform, lay in front of the mosque’s gates as smoke
Bahamas drenched HURRICANE Sandy pounded the Bahamas with battering winds and rain yesterday, sweeping over the island chain after killing 21 people across the Caribbean and posing a menacing threat to the U.S. East Coast. Forecasters warned the late-season storm is expected to combine with a polar air mass near the United States next week, potentially producing a highly unusual and potent storm that could wreak havoc along the US East Coast. The US National Hurricane Center early yesterday issued tropical storm warnings for much of the Florida coast and tropical storm watches up through much of North Carolina.
Nuke plant could still be leaking THE operator of Japan’s quake-struck Fukushima nuclear power plant said yesterday it could not rule out the possibility that it may still be leaking radiation into the sea. A massive earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 triggered fuelrod meltdowns at the plant, causing radiation leakage, contamination of food and water and mass evacuations, although the government declared in December that the disaster was under control.

Damascus car bomb shatters Eid ceasefire Many casualties reported in Syria capital By Dominic Evans A POWERFUL car bomb exploded in Damascus yesterday, inflicting many casualties and buffeting a shaky temporary truce in the Syrian conflict on the occasion of a Muslim religious holiday. State television said the “terrorist car bomb” had killed five people and wounded 32, according to “preliminary figures”. Opposition activists said the bomb had gone off near a makeshift children’s playground built for the Eid al-Adha holiday in the southern Daf al-Shok district of the capital. Fighting erupted around Syria earlier as both sides violated the Eid al-Adha ceasefire arranged by international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, but violence was far less intense than usual. The Syrian military said it had responded to attacks by insurgents on army positions, in line with its announcement on Thursday that would cease military activity during the four-day holiday, but reserved the right to react to rebel actions. Brahimi’s ceasefire appeal had won widespread international support, including from Russia, China and Iran, President Bashar al-Assad’s main foreign allies. The UN-Arab League envoy
had hoped to build on the truce to calm a 19-monthold conflict that has killed an estimated 32,000 people and worsened instability in the Middle East.
TRUCE BREACHES Violence appeared to wane in some areas, but truce breaches by both sides swiftly marred Syrians’ hopes of celebrating Eid al-Adha, the climax of the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca, in peace. The imam of Mecca’s Grand Mosque called on Arabs and Muslims to take “practical and urgent” steps to stop bloodshed in Syria. The Syrian conflict has aggravated divisions in the Islamic world, with Shi’ite Iran supporting Assad and USallied Sunni nations such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar backing his foes. “The world should bear responsibility for this prolonged and painful disaster (in Syria) and the responsibility is greater for the Arabs and Muslims who should call on each other to support the oppressed against the oppressor,” Sheikh Saleh Mohammed al-Taleb told worshippers during Eid prayers. For some in Syria, there was no respite from war, but by dusk the death toll was still significantly lower than in recent days, when often be-
tween 150 to 200 people have been killed. The heaviest fighting took place around the army base at Wadi al-Daif, near the Damascus-Aleppo highway, which rebels have been trying to seize from the army for two weeks. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said nine soldiers were killed by rebel bombardment of the base, which completely destroyed one building, and four rebel fighters were killed in clashes around Wadi al-Daif. Four people were killed by tank fire and snipers in Harasta, a town near Damascus, activists said. Gunfire and explosions echoed over Douma, just east of the capital. Rockets killed one person in the besieged Khalidiya district of Homs. Clashes erupted at a checkpoint near the Mahlab army barracks in Aleppo. There was shooting at checkpoints near Tel Kelakh, on the Lebanese border, and clashes in the town itself. Heavy machine gun fire and mortar explosions were audible along the Turkey-Syrian border near the Syrian town of Haram, a Reuters witness in the Turkish border village of Besaslan said. Rebels in the northern town near the Turkish border said a sniper had killed one of their fighters early yesterday.
New Netanyahu alliance could backfire PRIME Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s tieup with far-right coalition partner Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman could backfire by eroding their lead ahead of Israel’s January 22 ballot, a poll said yesterday. The findings flew in the face of Netanyahu’s prediction that, by merging with his fiery rival for nationalist votes, he would muster a “big, cohesive force” of support to win a third term as premier. They also suggested opposition parties, long dawdling thanks to Israel’s stable economy and disillusionment with the deadlocked Palestinian peace process, would be re-energised by the conservative incumbent’s tack toward the Lieberman tent. According to a survey published by top-rated television station Channel Two, the joint candidate list of Netanyahu’s Likud and Lieberman’s Israel Beiteinu parties, announced on Thursday, would take just 33 of the 120 seats in parliament. Though that still puts them ahead of rival
parties, it represented a drop-off from Monday, before the unexpected alliance was unveiled, when a poll for parliament’s television station Knesset 99 gave them a combined 39 seats. “Unifying lists usually shrinks them,” commented Nahum Barnea of the biggest-selling newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth. “Anyone who did not tolerate Lieberman and voted for Netanyahu will think twice, and the same is true for those who did not tolerate Netanyahu and voted for Lieberman.” Yesterday’s poll also found boosted support for Israel’s strongest opposition parties, left-leaning Labour and the new, centrist Yesh Atid. They were seen taking 27 and 18 seats, respectively, up from the 19 and 15 predicted on Monday. Reasons analysts gave for that shift included worry among wavering Israelis about the rise of the Soviet-born Lieberman, an often undiplomatic diplomat who faces possible indictment on graft charges - though he denies wrongdoing.
Iranian lawyer and filmmaker awarded Sakharov Prize THE European Union’s prize for human rights and freedom of thought was awarded to two Iranians yesterday, a lawyer and a filmmaker who have both been cut off from the outside world for defying the country’s leadership. Imprisoned human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, 49, and filmmaker Jafar Panahi, 52, were awarded the European Parliament’s Sakharov
Prize for their courage in defending their own and others’ basic freedoms, the parliament said. Named in honour of Soviet scientist and dissident Andrei Sakharov, the prize has been awarded by the European Parliament annually since 1988. The first recipients were Nelson Mandela and Russian author and dissident Anatoly Marchenko. Russian punk
group Pussy Riot was also nominated this year. “The award ... is a message of solidarity and recognition to a woman and a man who have not been bowed by fear and intimidation and who have decided to put the fate of their country before their own,” said European Parliament President Martin Schulz as he announced the winners.

PRESIDENT Barack Obama won the endorsement of retired General Colin Powell, a moderate Republican, on Thursday as he and Republican rival Mitt Romney engaged in frantic campaigning in battleground states to try to turn a razor-close race their way. Hoping to encourage supporters to vote ahead of the November 6 election, Obama cast his ballot early in his home town of Chicago. Romney portrayed himself as an agent of change during a day campaigning in Ohio with 12 days to go until the election. There was little movement in the overall state of the tied race. Romney was clinging to a one percentage point lead over Obama in Thursday’s Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll, up 47 per cent to 46 per cent for Obama. A new ABC News/Washington Post poll showed how Romney has made up ground since defeating Obama in the first of their three presidential debates on October 3. The poll had Romney up by 50 per cent to 47 per cent among likely voters.

Business UBS rogue trader: my actions not fraudulent
US consumers spur growth despite business caution
FORMER UBS trader Kweku Adoboli wept yesterday as he told a jury that his “off-book trades” were done for the benefit of a bank that meant everything to him. Addressing the court for the first time since his trial started six weeks ago, Adoboli, 32, said he believed his behaviour was not fraudulent and he had worked incredibly hard for years to generate profits. “UBS was my family and every single thing I did, every single bit of effort I put into that organisation, was for the benefit of the bank,” he said. The British-educated Ghanaian was arrested on September 15, 2011, and blamed for losses of $2.3 billion (£1.4 billion). He was in custody until he was granted bail in June 2012. He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of fraud and four of false accounting, covering the period between October 2008 and September 2011. The prosecution say Adoboli traded far in excess of his authorised risk limits, concealed his unhedged positions by booking fictitious hedges and lied to the back office when asked questions about his accounts. Adoboli told the court he had begun making what he called “off-book trades” in late 2008 after realising the Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) desk where he worked faced mounting costs that would reduce any profits it could make. Asked about his so-called trading “umbrella”, Adoboli described it as an accounting mechanism that had an legitimate purpose. He said it consisted of holding some trades off-book for a period of time to try to generate a profit. Then those profits would be leaked back into the profit and loss account to offset costs incurred by the ETFs desk such as funding costs.
Thirdquarter growth at 2% annual rate By Lucia Mutikani U.S. economic growth picked up in the third quarter as a late burst in consumer spending offset the first cutbacks in investment in more than a year by cautious businesses. Gross domestic product expanded at a 2 per cent annual rate, the Commerce Department said yesterday, accelerating from the second quarter’s 1.3 per cent pace. Still, the stronger pace of expansion fell short of what is needed to make much of a dent in unemployment, and details of the report did not bode well for an acceleration in output in the fourth quarter, as a spurt in government spending was seen as temporary. A growth pace in excess of 2.5 per cent is needed over several quarters to make substantial headway cutting the jobless rate. Economists polled by Reuters had expected a 1.9 per cent growth pace in the third quarter. The report offers little cheer for the White House ahead of the closely contested November 6 presidential election, in which President Barack Obama is trying to fend off Republican challenger Mitt Romney. US stock index futures pared losses after the data, while Treasuries briefly cut early price gains. The dollar trimmed losses against the yen, and cut gains against the

in inflation pressures as gasoline prices rose. A price index for personal spending rose at a 1.8 per cent rate, accelerating from the second quarter’s 0.7 per cent pace. But a core inflation measure that strips out food and energy costs slowed to a 1.3 per cent rate after rising 1.7 per cent in the prior quarter, suggesting the increase in overall price pressures will be temporary. However, with about 23 million Americans either out of work or underemployed, the current pace of spending may not be sustained, especially if gasoline prices maintain their recent upward march and families get a higher tax bill in 2013. Incomes were squeezed in the last quarter, causing households to save less to fund their purchases. The amount of income available to households after accounting for inflation and taxes rose at a tepid 0.8 per cent rate in the third quarter, slowing after a brisk 3.1 per cent pace the prior period. The saving rate slowed to 3.7 per cent after increasing to 4 per cent in the second quarter. There was surprisingly good news on government spending, which snapped eight straight quarters of declines on a strong rebound in defence outlays. Government spending accounted for 0.7 percentage point of GDP growth. However, that might not be sustained given the austerity plans for next year. Fears of the fiscal cliff fears hammered business spending, which dropped at a 1.3 per cent pace in the third quarter, falling for the first time since the first three months of 2011. The fiscal cliff refers to automatic tax hikes and government spending cuts, which will drain about $600 billion out of the economy next year absent congressional action.

Outgoing CEO Cynthia Carroll was the first non-South African, the first woman and the first outsider to take the top job at Anglo in 2007
ANGLO American’s Chief Executive Cynthia Carroll has quit after more than five years in the job, under pressure from investors over the mining group’s lagging share price and continued dependence on strike-hit South Africa. A geologist by training, New Jersey-born Carroll ruffled feathers when she moved from the aluminium industry to become the first nonSouth African, the first woman and the first outsider to take the top job at Anglo in 2007. Rejecting suggestions Carroll was pushed out, Chairman John Parker, her long-standing supporter, said there had been “differences of opinion” with shareholders, but the decision to step down was Carroll’s own, as she approached her seventh year in a “very gruelling and demanding role”. “Institutional pressure has been building for some time to replace Cynthia, so the news will be welcomed”, one of Anglo’s 15 largest shareholders said. “Ultimately, running Anglo is one of the toughest jobs around and, although Cynthia made a good start as CEO, the feeling is the company has gone backwards in the last two to three years.” Carroll’s efforts to streamline a mining group with colonial roots that became a sprawling conglomerate, her campaign to cut billions in costs and efforts to shift Anglo’s centre of gravity away from South Africa have won her support among investors.
A campaign to improve ties with South Africa’s government has also won praise - South Africa’s mines minister, Susan Shabangu, said Carroll’s departure was a “disappointment”. But Carroll’s relationship with investors became troubled after big-ticket acquisitions such as the Minas Rio iron ore project in Brazil - an early bid to diversify Anglo’s portfolio, which suffered cost overruns and delays. Anglo has yet to give a final cost for Minas Rio, bought in a $5.5-billion deal at the top of the commodities cycle, but analysts say spending could rise to $8 billion from current forecasts of $5.8 billion, already twice original estimates. “Her strategic moves didn’t always hit the mark. The acquisition of Minas Rio, promptly followed by a dividend cut, was a particular low point,” another of Anglo’s 15 top investors said. Anglo scrapped its 2008 dividend to preserve cash. Crippling strikes in platinum and iron ore mines in South Africa in recent weeks have revived long-standing worries over Anglo’s exposure to the country, aggravating concerns about a share price that has underperformed its peers. Despite her cost cuts, according to analysts at Macquarie, under Carroll Anglo has lost one-third of its value on a US dollar market capitalisation basis and is now worth $25 billion less. Other major miners are worth at least the same as they were at the start of 2007.

Football matches can be controlled THE CYPRUS police should be congratulated for the excellent security operation it organised for the visit of the Turkish football club Fenerbahce. The police were on top of the situation from the moment the 70 Fenerbahce players and officials arrived at Larnaca Airport on Wednesday until their departure in the early hours of Friday. There was not a single incident of bad behaviour or aggression, despite the arrival from the north of over a thousand Turkish Cypriot fans and the presence of close to 10,000 AEL fans inside the GSP stadium. Rival fans were kept apart both outside and inside the stadium and they were bodysearched at the entrance to ensure that no potentially dangerous items were smuggled inside. The security operation involved some 400 officers, who guarded the hotel at which the team was staying, escorted their coaches and those of the fans who came from the north, carried out a full search of the stadium and kept order during the match. The fact that not a single incident was reported illustrated how well the police had done their job. Admittedly, they were helped by both football clubs that worked impeccably together, keeping politics out of the tie and focusing on the unifying effect of sport. AEL officials laid on the hospitality and their Fenerbahce counterparts responded very positively. In short, the clubs sent the right signals, helping the police’s job. If Cyprus’ clubs could show the same level of graciousness when confronting each other, it might help the police control the hooligan element.
Logic finally wins IN THE END, the Supreme Court was needed to expose the irrationality of the illiberal law regulating shop sales. For years, successive governments and the political parties supported a law that had been imposed on us by the powerful small shopkeepers’ association POVEK, on the grounds that it protected small shops from ‘unfair’ competition.
The reason this absurd law, which prevented shops from advertising price discounts outside the government-designated ‘sales’ period, had been in force for so many years was because POVEK is a powerful pressure group that represents many thousands of votes. Powerful pressure groups dictate government policy, even if their diktats make no sense. In a ruling earlier this week, the Supreme Court upheld an appeal against a decision of the district court, which had fined the group for offering discounts outside the designated period, saying that the sales law was a violation of the EU directive. The objective of a sales law was to protect consumers, not businesses as the state had argued, the ruling said. It is astonishing that there had to be an appeal to the Supreme Court for our authorities to accept what was self-evident – that frequent price discounts by shops are to the benefit of the consumer. And shops had every right to advertise these, because how else would consumers know about them. Rationality has finally won, but it took longer than a decade for this to happen and required the intervention of the Supreme Court.

Splitting water molecules S
TOCKTON-ON-TEES, a small city in northeastern England, has only one claim to fame: the first railway tracks were made and laid in the city in 1822, and the first-ever train ran on those tracks in 1825. But it might one day have another claim, also related to transportation: a locally based start-up company called Air Fuel Synthesis has just produced the first petrol (gasoline) from air and water. It isn’t a lot of petrol – five litres (one gallon) in two months – but Peter Harrison, the company’s chief executive, hopes that within two years they will build a larger plant producing a tonne a day. He envisages refinery-scale operations within fifteen years. “We’ve taken carbon dioxide from air and hydrogen from water and turned these elements into petrol,” Harrison told a conference at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London. Since the carbon dioxide that goes into the air when this fuel is burned exactly equals the amount that was taken out of the air when it was fabricated, it is a carbon-neutral fuel. Provided, of course, that the electricity used in the process comes from renewable sources. No wonder that people who worry about global warming are excited about this breakthrough – but they should get excited slowly. The question was never IF you could create a complex hydrocarbon like petrol from just air and water, but HOW
Comment Gwynne Dyer
MUCH it costs to do it, compared to just pumping oil out of the ground and refining it. The answer in the past has been: far too much. Splitting water molecules to get hydrogen is expensive in terms of the electricity required. Carbon dioxide is easily available as the by-product of burning coal or oil, but using that CO2 as the feedstock for artificial petrol only postpones the moment when it gets into the atmosphere by a few days or weeks. If you want a truly carbon-neutral fuel, then the carbon dioxide you use must come straight from the air. Prototype machines have been built (by Klaus Lackner of Columbia University and David Keith of the University of Calgary) that can extract CO2 from the air in industrial quantities, but the price per tonne at the moment is about $600. That’s far too much, but as Lackner points out, the cost of any new technology plunges steeply once it goes into volume production. And the cost of getting hydrogen from water may also drop dramatically. Daniel Nocera of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has developed a catalyst made from cobalt and phosphorus that can
split water at room temperature. “I’m using cheap, Earth-abundant materials that you can mass-manufacture,” Nocera said in 2008. “As long as you can charge the surface, you can create the catalyst, and it doesn’t get any cheaper than that.” So if the hydrogen is cheap, and the cost of extracting carbon dioxide from the air also falls dramatically, how much would it cost to combine them into petrol? That’s what Air Fuel Synthesis is working on: an integrated, scalable industrial process that takes carbon dioxide from the air and hydrogen from water, combines them into methanol, and then turns that into petrol. Peter Harrison is cagey about his current production cost per litre: at the “proof-of-principle” stage, everything costs a fortune. But as he told The Independent in a recent interview, “You’re in a marketplace where the only way is up for the price of fossil fuel. At some point there will be a crossover where our fuel becomes cheaper.” David Keith sees it the same way. “You’re selling this fuel, and they’re burning it, putting carbon in the air, but then you’re recapturing the same amount of carbon and selling it to them again. That’s a business model that could conceivably take a whack at the global transportation market, which is the hardest part of the climate problem to attack.”
Maybe Harrison’s process will not win the race to capture that market. Maybe the cheaper option will be to grow green algae in waste water or salt water, crush it to extract the oil from it, and then refine the oil into petrol, diesel and so on. (Exxon-Mobil is currently spending about $100 million a year to develop that process.) But one way or another, the petrol we put in our vehicles in 25 years’ time will probably not come out of the ground. An entire industry employing millions of people, and the national budgets of entire countries, and much of the military planning by the world’s great powers, all rest on the assumption that this will never happen. Of course it will. The pressure to cut greenhouse gas emissions will grow as the temperature rises, and the desire for “energy independence” will only get stronger as oil price rises. Back in the 1890s, it was still unclear whether the new “horseless carriages” would ultimately be powered mainly by petrol, steam or electricity. But it was already clear to those with any understanding of the interactions between markets and technology that the day of the horse-and-buggy was over, and the smart money was already getting out of buggy whips. The BMWs, Biere blonde bureaucratic gravy train IT’S BRUSSELS on a blazingly hot Monday morning. The 200year-old forests of beech trees, which circle the city, are glorious in golden autumn colours. I drive along Avenue Roosevelt but there’s nowhere to park. All is reserved for CD plates outside the art nouveau and turn of century mansions that line the 3km boulevard housing the HQs and homes of some of the Commission’s 55,000 staff, diplomats and delegates. I count ten new BMWs within a few hundred metres. No wonder I can’t find a space. No wonder, too that the local restaurants charge from €30 a bottle for wine retailing at €6 in the supermarkets around the corner. They serve finest Bordeaux gravy on this particular train. researchers, civil servants and ancillary staff. He claimed 16 per cent of European Commission staff earn more than €100,000 but, unofficially with allowances, it is thought a great many earn a great deal more than that. He was right to ask the question in these cost cutting times, when home civil servants throughout the EU are experiencing pay freezes and cuts, why the EU isn’t following suit. egates signing for their daily allowance and then disappearing. Seen the adverts offering salaries of €4,000 a month for relatively minor administrative jobs; seen the inflated prices produced by the expense account culture; committees filled with unelected delegates employing unaccountable staff. Not surprising countries around the EU, being scolded to put their houses in order, look to the centre and shrug. Not surprising governments putting in more money than they are getting out, like the UK, are reluctant to put a referendum to their electorate. They know what the answer might be. Most of us seeing the blatant waste and misuse cannot help but feel that people here are living in a parallel universe to the countries they serve. Few can doubt the EU’s prosperity has kept the peace, but
it has come at a price. For now, we discover, money poured into many countries has been poorly accounted for, that highly paid civil servants successfully lobbying and pursuing the paper trails of grants and subsidies have been fuelled not simply by the self interest of the nation states they serve but have been held in hock by an underlying culture of payback to the richer and more powerful. Fifty per cent of UK trade is with the EU; a stand off risks losing contracts, but I am with Dave the Broom, rather than Barroso who aspires to more Europe not less. For the electorate deserves reform and accountability before contributing more tax for expansion. Brussels first needs to be a transparent, streamlined, cost effective, selfregulatory bureaucracy before it lectures others - that really would deserve a Peace Prize.

The Rolling Stones wow fans with live Paris gig
Mozart’s piano returns home to Vienna
Jagger: I can’t believe we’re all still standing
By Georgina Prodhan
By Dominique Vidalon and Johnny Cotton THE Rolling Stones performed an energetic warmup gig in Paris on Thursday for a few hundred fans after announcing on Twitter that tickets would go on sale for 15 euros just hours in advance. “I can’t believe we’re all still standing up, you’d think by now one or two of us would be sitting down, but we’re not,” lead singer Mick Jagger, 69, told fans at the Trabendo, a 700-capacity venue in northern Paris, during the 75 minute surprise show. Fans said the small space created an optimal setting for the show which kicked off with Route 66 and ended with Brown Sugar. “We were right next to them, we could see them perfectly,” said one French fan who gave his name as Gianni. “It was a very small room and they were running all over the stage...they seemed really happy.” Some got an additional perk after the show, as Jagger signed autographs before being whisked away in a

Earlier this month, the band announced they would perform four concerts at large arenas - two in London and two near New York - to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Their last world tour ended in 2007. But fans have complained about high ticket prices, which range from 95 pounds to as much as 950 pounds for a ‘VIP hospitality’ seat. Tickets have been offered online for several thousands pounds each, British media
has reported. The Paris music scene has been awash with rumours that the Stones will also play to bankers invited by Parisbased investment house Carmignac Gestion at a theatre in the heart of Paris on Monday.
EXCLUSIVE AUDIENCE In recent years, Carmignac has recruited former Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed and British rocker Rod Stewart to play similar gigs,
usually to an exclusive audience. Carmignac sent out mystery invitations giving the date and location of what it called “the biggest secret event of the year” without identifying the performer. The investment house has declined to comment. On Thursday, the band banned mobile phones, cameras, video equipment and recording devices from those going into the gig. Some fans drove to Paris from as far away as Germa-
ny. Sebastian Baaske said he set off in his car from Hanover, Germany on Wednesday afternoon in hopes of securing a ticket. “My girlfriend said I’d regret it if I didn’t... It’s all worth it,” the 35-year-old Baaske said. The Rolling Stones will play the O2 Arena in the British capital on November 25 and 29 before crossing the Atlantic to perform at the Prudential Center, Newark, on December 13 and 15.
Ex-Britney confidante Aguilera insults Simon Cowell sobs over death threats THE former confidante of pop star Britney Spears broke down on the witness stand this week, saying his villainous portrayal in a book written by the singer’s mother triggered a deluge of death threats that drove him into a suicidal depression. “If I went anywhere public, people were assaulting me,” Sam Lutfi told jurors at a civil trial in Los Angeles. “People I knew were shunning me. There were numerous postings online on websites ... that were threats to kill me. People wishing that I was dead,” Lutfi said, choking up and beginning to cry. “People wishing harm on my family.” Lutfi, who emerged as Spears’ closest friend during her 2007 personal and career meltdown, was testifying for the second day in his lawsuit against the superstar and her parents. He is suing Britney’s mother, Lynne Spears, alleging she libeled him in her 2008 book, Through the Storm, and made him a scapegoat for the singer’s problems. He is also suing Britney Spears for a chunk of her earnings, claiming she hired him as her manager soon after meeting him in 2007. And he is suing her father, Jamie Spears, for assault. Lutfi said that Spears’ father chased him, punched him and threatened to kill him in her Los Angeles home in early 2008. “Jamie Spears was spitting and shouting, yelling at me, telling me that I had hurt his daughter and I had better leave or he was going to beat the hell out of me,” Lutfi testified. The trial, which began last week, has offered a glimpse into Spears’ private life during her highly publicised crisis five years ago, including a divorce, a bitter child custody battle, a head-shaving incident and claims of amphetamine abuse.
Christina Aguilera said she treats people better than the Brit
SINGER Christina Aguilera is currently a mentor on The Voice and admitted she doesn’t watch rival reality TV shows such as Simon’s The X Factor and American Idol which he previously appeared on but once saw a clip of him on the latter and thought he was needlessly mean to the contestants. Speaking at the Billboard/ Hollywood Reporter Music Conference, she said: “I’ve not actually seen a full episode of any of the other music shows. I saw the commercials early on of American Idol of Simon being a d**k. I was like, ‘Man, that’s not what it’s about!’ I didn’t want to treat people like that. I wanted to do The Voice to show that we can be positive. We don’t have to knock people down.” Christina also claimed she has to be tough to survive in the music business because people will try to walk all over her. She explained: “It’s hard being such a powerful woman in the business.”
THE piano on which Mozart wrote all of his late concertos returned home to Vienna on Thursday for the first time since the composer’s death in 1791. The fortepiano that Mozart played almost daily for nine years will stand in his former Vienna home, now a museum, for two weeks, culminating in a concert of Mozart works. Mozart bought the instrument from Anton Walter, the most famous Viennese piano maker of his time, in 1782. The prolific composer wrote more than 50 works for the fortepiano on it, many of them in the apartment on Vienna’s Domgasse. Mozart and his wife Constanze lived in the grand apartment in the shadow of St Stephen’s Cathedral, where they married, at the height of Mozart’s fame as a composer and soloist. Towards the end of the decade, he became impoverished as the ability of his aristocratic patrons to support music was sapped by the Austro-Turkish war, and he was forced to move to the suburbs, taking his piano with him. After Mozart’s death, Constanze gave the instrument to their eldest surviving son, Carl Thomas, who donated it to the then Cathedral Music Association and Mozarteum on what would have been the composer’s 100th birthday. The piano is now part of the permanent exhibition at the Mozart family home in the Austrian city of Salzburg. “It was very hard to let it go,” Matthias Schulz, director of the Mozarteum Salzburg, told journalists. “If we didn’t know it was in the best hands, we wouldn’t have done it.” The fortepiano is much smaller and lighter than modern concert pianos, weighing just 85 kg and measuring 1 by 2.23 metres (3 feet 3 inches by 7 feet 4 inches). Its sound is fresher and brighter than that of a modern piano, with lighter action and hammers, but fades faster. Piano restorer Josef Meingast, who has looked after the Mozart piano since 1975, said it was superior to any of its surviving contemporaries or copies. “The Mozart piano is the best by a long way,” he told Reuters. Meingast said he had to fight to replace the existing strings, dating from a 1973 restoration, with softer ones that produce a rounder sound thought to be more similar to what Mozart would have produced. “The instinct of the museum people is to keep everything original as far as possible. They get a bad conscience if they chance something. But this instrument is for playing, not just a museum piece,” he said.

Apple’s new Mac flies in under the radar
Video-sharing app puts text messaging fans in the picture
Facelift may revitalise important line-up
By Natasha Baker
By Poornima Gupta AMID the fanfare accompanying the noisy launch of the iPad mini this week, Apple Inc also took the wraps off new Mac computers. The facelift may help revitalise an important line-up that - while seeing growth tail off in the early part of 2012 yields 14 per cent of revenue and still racks up sales growth numbers that are the envy of a flagging PC world. On Tuesday, Apple took the lid off a slimmed-down iMac and a 13-inch laptop with a vastly improved screen, setting the stage for a potential revival in sales even as Hewlett-Packard and Dell Inc struggle just to stay level. Earlier this year, Apple had also launched an updated MacBook Air - a product analysts say spawned over 20 touch-enabled designs from rivals called “Ultrabooks”, which run Microsoft Corp’s upcoming Windows 8 software. Apple remains No. 3 in US market share behind HP and Dell. But the Mac’s premium pricing, at $1,000 and above, and its subsequent outsized margins mean a spike in revenue growth can give its bottom line a significant boost. “The pricing and feature set of the refreshed iMac present an attractive combination, and I would not be surprised to see the new iMac stimulate desktop sales in the December
Apple’s Mac line still racks up sales despite troubled times for the traditional PC quarter and beyond,” Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes said. The decades-old Macintosh line that helped set a stumbling computer company back on its feet - on Thursday overshadowed in both revenue and media appeal by the popular iPhone and iPad - saw growth drop to singledigit percentages in the first two quarters of 2012 for the first time since 2009. Yet sales outgrew the PC market, overall, by more than seven times over the 12 months to June, according to CEO Tim Cook, and has outpaced PC growth over the last six years. On Tuesday, Apple Marketing Chief Phil Schiller called

the Mac “what began it all,” and he claimed the Mac was America’s No. 1 laptop and desktop among individual models. Research houses Gartner and IDC figures place Apple third in the United States with a market share of about 13 per cent. Regardless where it places, at prices starting at $1,000 for its MacBook Air and going all the way close to $4,000 and growth - while well off the 30-per cent range of 2010 - still defying the market, the Mac has proven a consistent money-spinner for the company even during troubled times for the traditional PC. Intel Corp, HP and other stalwarts of the PC industry
are now fighting to sustain growth as tablet computers eat into their PC-related businesses. While the Mac line has not completely side-stepped PC market trends, it has held up better partly because it is targeted at a higher-spending clientele that values its consistency, vis-a-vis the often fragmented PC, where multiple vendors supply different components that don’t always work seamlessly. But it also owes its success in large part to a so-called halo effect stemming from consumers’ experiences with the iPhone and iPad, said Loren Loverde, analyst with research firm IDC.
TEXT messaging is fast and efficient, but a new videosharing application aims to put users in the picture. The London-based company Six3 has launched a new video-sharing app by the same name that will enable users to send short video messages as easily as sending a text. Whether it is a business traveler trying to stay in touch with family, or a teenager connecting with friends, the app aims to combine the convenience of texting with the intimacy of video. “It’s easier to send a video message than a text message if you’re walking down the street because you don’t need to look down and tap away at tiny buttons. You just talk straight into the camera,” said Tim Grimsditch, the cofounder and CEO of the London-based company Six3. Users can also record a message, which must be less than 63 seconds long, and send it to other people using the app, or email it and send it to Facebook contacts. It can also be used to send public messages via Facebook and Twitter and there are Instagram-style filters, that
can add colour, or contrast and other effects, that can be overlaid on the videos. Grimsditch said most people using the app are business travellers and parents with young children. But “video natives”, 25-year olds who grew up using video recording devices, are the most active users. “They’re using the app in a much more day-to-day, casual style because they have used video communication technologies their whole lives,” Grimsditch explained. “The text message started with the teens and very rapidly spread north up through the age groups,” he added. The idea for the app, which is available on iPhone now with plans for an Android version, originated when a company executive had difficulty sharing the experiences of his son growing up with family and friends who did not live nearby. “He was surprised by just how difficult it was to communicate in an emotionally meaningful way,” said Grimsditch, adding video calling services such as Skype require coordination ahead of time. Since February when it was launched in beta, the app has over 12,000 users.

Microsoft unveils Windows 8, Surface tablet MICROSOFT Corp launched its new Windows 8 operating system and Surface tablet on Thursday in a bid to revive interest in its flagship product and regain ground lost to Apple Inc and Google Inc in mobile computing. “We’ve reimagined Windows and we’ve reimagined the whole PC industry,” Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer told Reuters Television. Windows 8 devices and the company’s new Surface tablet, which challenges Apple’s popular iPad head on, went on sale as of yesterday. Steven Sinofsky, head of Microsoft’s Windows unit and the driving force behind Windows 8, opened the launch event in New York in front about 1,000 media and PC industry partners. He showed off a range of devices running Windows 8 from of PC makers such as Lenovo Group Ltd and Acer Inc, but devoted the second half of the presentation to the Surface tablet, the first computer Microsoft has made itself. “One person called it historic, unique. It’s starting at $499 for the 32 GB version and we think that’s a pretty darn good price. It’s twice the amount of storage as a competing tablet for the same price,” Sinofsky said, referring to
Microsoft’s new Surface tablet was on sale in stores as of yesterday the cheapest model of Apple’s latest full-sized iPad. Panos Panay, the head of the Surface project, gave a spirited demonstration of the tablet’s features, beaming video and music to other screens, showing off the ultra-thin cover that doubles as a keyboard, and hooking up a camera to the device’s USB port. He even dropped the device on the floor to demonstrate its durability. Early reviews of the Surface tablet
have been mixed, with praise for its hardware, but concerns about battery life and the limited software and applications available. While Windows 7 was introduced three years ago, Windows 8 represents the biggest change in Microsoft’s user interface since Windows 95 came out 17 years ago. The radical redesign, which dispenses with the Start button and features square tiles for apps, may surprise some users. Sinofsky sought to quell fears by emphasising that the new system was built on the base of Windows 7, Microsoft’s best-selling software that recently passed 670 million licence sales. Even so, early user reaction has been lukewarm. “Enough consumers don’t know where to go; they are still confused by Windows 8,” said Richard Doherty from technology consulting firm The Envisioneering Group, speaking at the New York event. “There were no developers here (at the event). I don’t know if developers will embrace it.” Initial demand for Windows 8 appeared solid, but customers are wary of spending money on unnecessary technology in the tight economy.

It’s trick or treat time!!! The last night of October brings an avalanche of carved pumpkins, dancing skeletons, smiling ghosts and witches riding on brooms. Halloween certainly stands out from the rest of the holidays we observe throughout the year: It’s full of frightening ghost stories, pranks, elaborate costumes and bizarre games. On Halloween, we all revel in being scared and if creepy crawlies and things that go bump in the night are your idea of fun, then Halloween is probably a favourite time of the year. Halloween wasn’t always the same celebration we experience today. In fact, Halloween’s origins date back thousands of years to the ancient Celtic festival called Samhain, pronounced sow-in. An import from America, Halloween is still a pretty new phenomenon in Cyprus, but locals are getting into the spooky spirit and embracing the holiday as their own. Halloween comes early to residents in the capital. Halloween preparations are well under way at Silver Pot, where one can get ready for a Halloween brunch today with a special witched up menu and more. At night most clubs across the island will be hosting Halloween themed parties. Club Occhio is hosting Haunted Mansion party with Mix FM. Trick or treat with non-stop hits by DJs Phivos & Andy Panayiotou. The night also includes a UV Show from Effekt Crew. eez s Running for five straight years, Teez’s n one Halloween Party has always been n, of a kind; the club transformation, the costumes, the competitions and ase. the entertainment, all aim to please. ehind Tonight Street & Dadge will be behind the decks to spice up your night to the max. If you’re traditionalist and only believe in celebrating Halloween on the actual day, Faros Restaurant in Latchi Harbour is hosting a Halloween Rock ‘N’ Roll Party. Rock ‘n’ Roll Royalty with Chris King as the King of Rock: Elvis Presley and Andrew Oliver as the Queen Mum of Pop: Sir Elton John. A total of three happenings (Action I) will take place with first taking place today at the Ayios Andreas Park in Nicosia (Ayios Pavlos). Action II will takes place the following Saturday at the Gymnasium of Linopetra in Limassol while Action III will take place on Saturday November 10, in Famagusta, exact location to be announced shortly. The project constitutes free workshops in graffiti, stencil, wheat pasting, a skating competition and yarn bombing. What’s yarn bombing, you ask? Yarn bombing is graffiti that grandmothers approve of. Yarn bombing involves covering a public structure or form (often benches, monuments or trees) in crocheted or knitted patterns. Since yarn does not damage
property in the same way spray paint might, yarn bombers see their art as a way of reclaiming and beautifying public spaces. Experienced street artists will guide the participants in using graffiti, stencil, yard bombing, wheat pasting to express their views and vision regarding peace in Cyprus. Street Art for Peace Project Manager, Petros Heracleous states: “Street Art for Peace is an innovative effort, aiming to bring together as many youths coming from both communities as possible. We consider the direct contact between Greek and Turkish Cypriots to be of great importance since it contributes to the collapse of current negative perceptions about the members of the “other side”. We aim to offer an alternative way of expression to the youth. We believe that through Street Art,

Reportage AT THE COURT OF DR Heads up: advertising Beats in Times Square
Dr Dre with Lady Gaga
Richard Godwin is summoned to New York to meet the hip hop king, worth £160m, whose Beats headphones are his biggest hit
O
n Tuesday night last week, as most of New York was watching Barack Obama and Mitt Romney square up on CNN, Dr Dre was hosting a party at The Darby, a favoured haunt of rappers which featured in American Psycho. The hip hop entrepreneur was celebrating the success of his audio business, The Beats by Dr Dre. A platoon of beautiful “hostesses” served martinis, champagne and steak, completely unadorned - whether as a statement or through oversight, we couldn’t be sure. Dre sat in a corner booth with his entourage, including his wife Nicole; his bodyguards; his business partner Jimmy Iovine, the veteran producer of John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen and U2 and American Idol mentor; and his chief operating officer, Luke Wood. Before long, the hip hop kingpin P Diddy joined them too, wearing a long sleeved Nirvana T-shirt. He and Dre had a conspicuous conference at the side of the room. These days, Diddy runs the vodka brand Ciroc, which helped him earn an estimated $45 million last year. Accord-
ing to Forbes magazine, Dre made more than three times that amount. Clearly, no one gets rich from actually making records any more. Dr Dre, 47, was born Andre Young in Los Angeles, and first made his name with the fierce rap group, NWA. When the filesharing s site Napster was emergin ng Iovine called emerging, him to lam llament what it was doing tto the record business. D Dr Dre was far more concer rne about what it concerned was do oin for audio - that doing teenag ge teenagers downloading m mus music for free were listeni in to it on tinny listening comp pu computer speakers. “A lo ot of people either lot don’tt know or don’t care ab about sound quality,” h he told us. “It’s one thing g to steal music it’s an a another to destroy it.” W With the launch of the iiPod and iTunes, App pl got people to Apple pay y for the music butt did not solve the aud di problem. As audio Iov vi Iovine likes to point ou ut a $400 iPod out, co om with 30¢ earcomes ph ho phones. S Since both men sp p spent most of their ca a careers in studios, ob o obsessing about so s sound, this bother e ered them. Iovine tto told me how he o once vacuumed P Phil Spector’s sstudio in the bellief that changing the direction of the bristles on the carpet wou u would improve the acoustics. D Dre added that he had been n trying to tune the speaker speakers in his car for 20 years. “I’ “I’ve almost got it right,” he sai said. Naturally, tthe cheap white b d were a bit of a probearbuds lem for the more bass-heavy productions for which Dre is famed. For Luke Wood, who has worked with Nirvana, Elliott Smith and Bright Eyes, it is just as much of a problem in alternative rock. “I signed TV on the Radio. Dear Sci-
ence is my favourite album of the past 10 years - but it just didn’t sell,” he told me. “That music has a lot going on technically. You need to be able to hear all the counterpoint, for it to make sense - and that’s the first thing to go on computer speakers. For traditional pop music, it’s the vocal that tells the story, so bad audio really favours basic pop vocals.” In other words, cheap audio equipment was favouring cheap music. It didn’t matter which genre. “All the Beats people, we’re all one constituent. The idea of anything being broken down by genre is irrelevant to us now. We’re clearly all going in one direction,” said Wood. Late at night, downstairs at Darby’s, everything was moving in what you’d have to describe as a hip hop direction. Records by Ludacris, Drake and Kanye West rumbled a wall-high speaker. I got into a conversation with a banker – who seemed to want me to be his “wingman” as he hit on one of the hostesses – and somehow wound up in the roped off area reserved for Beats executives. Dre was sitting on the back of a bench with his wife before a table laden with brandy and vodka. Iovine, wearing a backwards baseball cap, looked a little weary. I asked him if it bothered him that all the fuss now centred on hardware, rather than singers. “Right now, the model of the record business is a mess and it needs to be corrected,” he said in a Brooklyn drawl. “We wanna move the model on. The first thing we need to do is get people to hear what’s there. Everyone else made headphones that looked like dental equipment and sounded like crap. So we’re proud of the fact that we got an entire generation with good headphones, whether they’re ours or not.
“We’re such a big marketing company that you can get lost in that. But at the core of it, Dre and I have 60 years in recording studios. I walked into a demo today and one of the girls who was working for us was playing the wrong song - a song that didn’t represent the speakers. I can’t stop that. But whatever gets people listening to music properly, that’s fine. Then you can start rebuilding the record business”. He hinted at a new online subscription service that would mark phase two in the
Beats’ bid for “total sonic domination”. “I think there’s gonna be a solution in the form of subscription. But in order to sell subscriptions, you have to sell a service. You can’t just sell a utility. How do you wade through 12 million songs? Why would you pay for that? It’s about curation.” Dr Dre came past, leaving early, to be fresh for his morning workout. He gave me a firm handshake, thanked me for coming, and left without comment, looking quietly satisfied.

Television PICK OF THE DAY Lawrence of Arabia (Mega, 23.00) We open with T.E. Lawrence (Peter O’Toole) getting killed in a motorbike accident in 1935, move on briefly to his funeral and only then go back to his time in Arabia - specifically in WW1, when he’s sent by the British Army to assess the prospects of a local Prince in his revolt against the Turks. That’s when the film’s most famous shot comes in, with Sherif Ali (Omar Sharif) appearing in the vast desert - he actually appears through a mirage - a tiny speck on the horizon till a shot rings out and ... but what does it matter? Your eyelids are likely to be drooping by then, and by the time we get to the second half - Lawrence’s guerrilla war against the Turks, a fascinating harbinger of modern ‘terrorism’ - it’ll be long past midnight and many viewers will be actively fighting sleep. Only the very hardy (or insomniac) are likely to make it to 2.30 a.m. or thereabouts (Mega’s schedule is almost certainly inaccurate) when the three-and-a-half-hour Lawrence ends and an even better film, The Squid and the Whale, begins. All of which begs a rather obvious question: Why do they do it? I know why they do it, of course. Mega is part of Mega Greece, and gets its films from the parent channel - so it makes no difference, budget-wise, what time those films get shown or how many people see them. What’s more, even Oscar-winning
films like Lawrence of Arabia come a distant second to the trashy local soaps which are what viewers really like. But still: we get so few good films on the free channels. If you’re going to show such a terrific double-bill - an undisputed classic followed by an edgy, remarkable drama - do you really have to show it so incredibly late? Can’t prime-time be devoted to something more substantial than the usual fluff, just for once? Anyway. You should obviously watch both Lawrence of Arabia and The Squid and the Whale if you haven’t already - especially Lawrence, just because it’s so famous. Steven Spielberg has called it his favourite film of all time, and the one that convinced him to be a filmmaker. It made O’Toole a star, launching him on a 50-year career (he announced his retirement just a few months ago, on the occasion of his 80th birthday), and he’s hugely charismatic. It’s a psychologically complex biography, making Lawrence an enigmatic hero - a brave soldier, but also a narcissist and attention-seeker with sadomasochistic tendencies. It’s got a great score (by Maurice Jarre, one of the film’s seven Oscars) and a great edit where we cut straight from a lighted match to the desert sun. Oh, and it’s on really late. But you already knew that. Made in 1962.

FILM PICKS
SATELLITE
Lionheart (LTV3, 20.00) “It was an age of wonder!” proclaims the trailer grandly - but what we really wonder is whether this is Richard the Lionheart or the Jean-Claude Van Damme fi lm of that name. Neither, as it turns out, just a rather obscure mediaeval adventure starring fresh-faced Eric Stoltz as a heroic young knight and grim-faced Gabriel Byrne as his evil opponent (“God will leave him,” he assures a minion, “as He left us”). Byrne, appropriately known as the Black Prince, kidnaps helpless children and sells them as slaves to the Muslims - and keen young Eric, on his way to join the Crusades, makes it his business to save the kids and lead them to the Holy Land on a Children’s Crusade. Good idea? You have to wonder - but anyone looking for cheesy costume heroics with preCGI effects could certainly do worse. Made in 1987.
Cold Mountain (Novacinema2, 22.00) War is Hell, so everyone keeps saying - and this is roughly what they have in mind, the hellish war in this case being the American Civil War. Humble farmer Jude Law meets preacher’s daughter Nicole Kidman, and they fall in love - but then they’re separated by “the war, this awful war”, as Jude goes off to fight and Nicole stays behind in the small town of Cold Mountain. Years pass, and the war still rages - but Jude, now badly wounded, decides to desert and return to his beloved, facing starvation and extreme weather as well as the unwelcome attentions of the Home Guard, formed to track down deserters. The original book (by Charles Frazier) was an epoch-defi ning bestseller in the US, yet the fi lm flopped - maybe because there doesn’t seem much point to it beyond ‘War is Hell’, a message underlined with heavy-handed irony. Renee Zellweger won an Oscar in the fi lm’s liveliest performance, as a young woman working on Nicole’s farm. Made in 2003.
Pretty Woman (Antenna, 22.10) Also showing tomorrow on pay-TV (actually Novacinema2) in case you miss it - because tomorrow is the 45th birthday of Julia Roberts, who made her name as a loveable hooker in this smash-hit rom-com. Julia is indeed a prostitute, but a classy and good-hearted one (so that’s all right then) - and she happily agrees when businessman Richard Gere hires her for a week to be his escort while he’s in town. They fall in love, Gere teaching Jules about the opera and how to eat at expensive restaurants while she thaws his cold, cold heart; then she goes on a shopping spree, which perhaps explains why the fi lm was so successful. Made in 1990.

LEO July 23 - August 22
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21
Doing things alone may not be as effective as being willing to pool your resources. Negotiation is the key and the way to get what you want. This should work in terms of ongoing love relationships and also any business and financial affairs. But once you have made a pact, you need to be sure you’ve done the right thing - going back could be difficult.
You need to be honest about your romantic intentions, otherwise you could break many hearts. But if both of you are looking for the same thing, you could have so much fun. Travel, study and a taste for adventure bring endless chances to be pierced by Cupid’s arrow. The only problem you may have with all of this exists in the past. It’s time to move on.
You may have a desire to absorb new spiritual knowledge, and would perhaps like your lover to share your enthusiasm. If you have a partner who is also on the path to greater growth and self awareness, you may appreciate their interest. Attend courses and discover more about positive relationships and what you can achieve together.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21
VIRGO August 23 - September 23
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20
Your lover may seem to be either consciously or unconsciously opposing your every idea. You can be placid for a while, but eventually it could become very annoying. You need freedom to follow your star, manifest your dream and get on with life, and they may not be helping. You may wonder if they’re doing this on purpose. It may be time to talk.
It helps if you clearly define your goals and have a vision of what success looks like. You could be offered a lucrative deal, but you may not get it on your terms. If you are willing to change your approach, you could do very well. At the same time, you may find yourself in conflict with someone who seems to resent your success. Don’t let them get you down.
You seem to be living as part of an extended family, with others dropping in or staying as and when they please. All of this is good news and helps you to focus on other things apart from work and health issues. Don’t allow yourself to be distant because of your responsibilities, it is time to embrace chaos and laughter and enjoy life.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21
LIBRA September 24 - October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19
A special influence may encourage you to escape from too much hard work. Your mind may wander as you think about all the fun things you could be doing aside from what you are engaged in right now. There could also be a romantic treat in store for you. A date with someone who seems just perfect could be mind blowing - enjoy it!
Be hopeful, aim high, dream big and be practical. There are all sorts of reasons why you may feel like risking everything and seeing what happens. You may feel bold, optimistic and ready for an adventure. Anything that takes time may be too slow. It pays to attend to the details and to aim for success one step at a time. No need to hurry!
Wonderful things may be on their way to you, without you knowing about it. There is a lot going on behind the scenes that looks promising. There may be a fateful meeting coming up that could have an impact. Someone with some clout may be about to bring good news your way. They may strike a hard bargain - but it could also be a worthwhile one.
CANCER June 22 - July 22

You may want to invest a lot of your hard earned cash in making your life better and easier. For this reason, you may decide to join a gym, take up yoga or tai chi classes, or remodel your kitchen so that you can impress your friends. You might also find that you’re on a learning curve, learning about subjects that encourage your full potential.
You may have a lot to say and come across as being very animated and expressive. Give others the space to speak too, otherwise you will be talking to yourself. Use today’s influence to close deals, gather information and connect with key people. You may be tempted to purchase something expensive that you don’t need! Think very carefully.
Your career trajectory may be dependent on selling yourself, and your willingness to do so. Don’t be too shy or too haphazard. You stand to benefit in wonderful ways when you let others know about your particular skills and talents. Set up a website, start a blog or begin social networking. You’ll appreciate the effort when you see the results.

Sport Legendary boxing trainer Emanuel Steward dies at 68 Long list of champs worked at his Kronk Gym By Simon Evans TOP trainer and former amateur boxer Emanuel Steward, who worked with several world champions at his fabled Kronk Gym in Detroit and was also a respected television commentator, died in a Chicago hospital on Thursday aged 68. “He has passed - he’s gone home,” Steward’s sister Diane Steward-Jones told the Detroit Free Press by phone. “He was in no pain, and we sang to him, as well as did the doctors present. He had loved ones around him.” Steward’s girlfriend Anita Ruiz, who is also executive director of the Kronk Gym Foundation, told Reuters the trainer had died after having “complications through surgery” for diverticulitis. Steward ended his amateur career with a record of 94 wins and three losses but is best known as the trainer who transformed Thomas Hearns from a light-hitting boxer into a devastating puncher. Under Steward’s guidance, ‘Hitman’ Hearns became a four-division welterweight champion in the 1980s as he vied with fellow boxing greats such as Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler. Most recently, Steward trained heavyweight world champion Wladimir Kl-
The trainer is best known in Europe for working with heavyweight champions Lennox Lewis (left) and Wladimir Klitschko itschko before he was forced to step aside because of an undisclosed illness. “It is not often that a person in any line of work gets a chance to work with a legend, well I was privileged enough to work with one for almost a decade,” Ukrainian Klitschko said in a statement. “I will miss our time together. The long talks about boxing, the world, and life itself. Most of all I will miss
our friendship. “My team and I will carry on with the goals we had set while Emanuel was with us because that is exactly what Emanuel would have wanted ... we will accomplish these goals in his honour.” West Virginia native Steward was central to the famous Kronk Gym in Detroit where he helped shape the careers of fighters such as Hilmer Kenty and Milton
McCrory. Later he worked with British world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis. An inductee of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame, Steward also worked for many years as part of HBO’s commentary team on fights. “There are no adequate words to describe the enormous degree of sadness and loss we feel at HBO Sports
with the tragic passing of Manny Steward,” Ken Hershman, president of HBO Sports, said in a statement. “For more than a decade, Manny was a respected colleague who taught us so much not only about the sweet science but also about friendship and loyalty. “His energy, enthusiasm and bright smile were a constant presence. Ten bells do not seem enough to mourn his passing.”
Sandoval widely saluted, including presidential tweet By Larry Fine
SF Giants slugger Pablo Sandoval became only the fourth player to hit three homers in a World Series game
SAN Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval said he received 300 text messages after his triple home run night in the World Series opener and a presidential tweet from back home in Venezuela. Sandoval’s power surge triggered the Giants’ 8-3 win over the Detroit Tigers and ace Justin Verlander and put him in the company of Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson and Albert Pujols as the only players to have hit three homers in a World Series game. One notable fan from Venezuela thought Sandoval was going to go one step beyond. “The president sent me a tweet. I still can’t believe it,” Sandoval said about Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez while speaking to reporters before the Giants came out on top 2-0 in Game Two of the series to take a 2-0 overall lead. “He put a tweet on the three home runs. But
when I was hitting the fourth at-bat, he was like, ‘I’m just going to say congratulations to Pablo, but I’m just going to see the four homers right now.’ So that was funny.” Sandoval put the barrel of the bat on the ball again in his fourth trip to the plate, but did not launch it over the wall, settling for a line-drive single that capped a 4-for-4 night. “So excited how the people watched, pay attention to all the things in the game, all my friends back home, family, just excited to be part of this,” Sandoval said. “You know, I still can’t believe it. When I wake up, all the stuff, my friends keep texting me. But you know, you have to realize what’s going on right now in your life, so you have to keep your head up and keep focused.” Sandoval, whose stocky build brought him the nickname ‘Kung Fu Panda,’ said it was exciting what a banner year in baseball it has been for Venezuelan players. “I’ll be happy for all things happening to Venezuelan players right no,” he said.
IN BRIEF Nadal pulls out of Paris and London WORLD tennis number four Rafa Nadal has pulled out of the Paris Masters and the ATP World Tour finals in London as he is still recovering from his left knee injury, the ATP said. The 11-time grand-slam singles champion has not played since he suffered a shock second-round loss to Czech Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon in June. “It’s disappointing for me to miss the last two tournaments of the season in Paris and London but it doesn’t come as a surprise,” the 26-year-old Spaniard was quoted as saying in a statement on the ATP website. “I will hopefully resume my tennis practice soon since I am making good progress with my recovery from injury. I am not ready to compete in time for these events so I will continue my recovery in Mallorca and work hard to be back as soon as possible.” Nadal, who has been battling knee problems for years, could also miss the Davis Cup final between his country, who are the defending champions, and Czech Republic in Prague from November 16 to 18. With the Spaniard unable to play in the London finals, which will reunite the year’s eight best players from November 5 to 12, the player ranked ninth in the world will get a berth. Serbian Janko Tipsarevic currently occupies the spot.
McIlroy in the hunt WORLD number one Rory McIlroy shut out noisy distractions to move to within two shots of leader Peter Hanson on day two of the BMW Masters golf on Friday. Despite constant sounds of nearby building construction, sirens and even fireworks, along with the distraction of on-course mobile phones, McIlroy did not drop a shot in a round of seven-under-par 65 to move into second place on 12 under par. Sweden’s Hanson, McIlroy’s double-winning Ryder Cup team mate, posted an eight-under par 64 to lead the $7-million event by two strokes on 14 under par on the Lake Malaren course. Hanson started his round with a first-hole bogey before getting eight birdies in 16 holes. “It’s amazing how many good rounds come together after a bogey on the first,” he said.

Sport Montpellier still hopeful despite mediocre start to title defence
Allegri faces moment of truth against Genoa
By Julien Pretot
Crisis-hit Milan ‘close to sacking coach’ By Brian Homewood CRISIS-HIT AC Milan go into this evening’s match at home to Genoa with five defeats in eight Serie A games behind them and amid widespread speculation that coach Massimiliano Allegri will be fired if they lose again. The names of Dutchman Frank Rijkaard, former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola and assistant coach Mauro Tassotti have been thrown into the rumour mill by the Italian media following Wednesday’s Champions Leaguedefeat at Malaga. Whether any of them could do better than Allegri with such limited resources is highly debatable, especially with the pressure to get instant results. Allegri, who led Milan to the 2010/11 title in his first season there, has been forced to rebuild his side after the club sold off Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva and Antonio Cassano during the close season in a bid to balance the books. With Brazilian forwards Robinho and Alexandre Pato struggling with injuries, Allegri has turned to Stephan El Shaaraway and, although the teenager is a
bright prospect, it seems premature to ask him to lead the attack. A loss of form by right back Ignazio Abate and midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng, left out of Wednesday’s team for technical reasons, has not helped the cause either. Milan have slumped to 15th in Serie A with seven points from eight games and both Allegri and chief executive Adriano Galliani have repeatedly had to fend off questions about the coach’s future. “We all know we are in a difficult moment, I am the first to realise that, but I also say this team will recover due to the efforts they are putting in,” said Allegri after Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat in Spain. “How do we get out of this? We beat Genoa on Saturday. It’s the only course of action.” Genoa, who have two points more than Milan, will be playing their first game under new coach Luigi Del Neri after Luigi De Canio was fired on Monday following their 4-2 home defeat to AS Roma. Del Neri, who has coached more than 15 Italian teams including Juventus, Roma and Sampdoria, became the sixth coach to be appointed
by volatile club president Enrico Preziosi in two years. Leaders and title holders Juventus have also had an uncomfortable week. Their Champions League campaign stuttered with a 1-1 draw at Danish champions Nordsjaelland and striker Niklas Bendtner spoke of his frustration at being repeatedly left out of the team. “I have the quality to be a part of this great club,” he said in a Danish television interview widely reproduced by Italian media. “I don’t see why I shouldn’t play and I hope to soon be a first-team starter. I can play in this team and I’ve shown that. I’m not at 100 percent, but I’m convinced that I can do well.” Juventus, who have 22 points from eight games, are away to Catania’s heavily Argentine-influenced side in Sunday’s early kickoff. The Sicilians, who have made a respectable start to the season with 11 points, will attempt to end Juve’s 47-match unbeaten run in Serie A which stretches back to the end of the 2010/11 season. Napoli, second with 19 points, host Chievo on Sunday while Lazio, a further point behind in third, visit Fiorentina.
Under pressure: AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has seen his side produce a series of woeful performances
Khedira injury comes at tricky time for Real Madrid By Iain Rogers
The Spanish champions have suffered a catalogue of injuries, with Sami Khedira the latest casualty
THE latest injury to Real Madrid’s German midfielder Sami Khedira comes at a tricky time for the La Liga champions with a potential banana skin awaiting at Real Mallorca on Sunday. Khedira was forced off in the 20th minute of Wednesday’s 2-1 Champions League defeat at Borussia Dortmund when he aggravated a leg muscle problem and his replacement, Luka Modric, is not as accomplished in the central holding role alongside Xabi Alonso. Another option for coach Jose Mourinho is Modric’s fellow new signing Michael Essien, but with Marcelo, Fabio Coentrao and Alvaro Arbeloa also sidelined, the former Chelsea midfielder has been filling in at left back. Essien looked uncomfortable against pacy Dortmund pair Lukasz Piszczek and Marco Reus on Wednesday and goalkeeper Iker Casillas acknowledged the left side of defence was a problem.
“It’s true that they got a lot of joy down our left wing,” the Real and Spain captain told reporters. “You noticed it a lot in the game,” he added. “We are suffering a lot of injuries and Khedira’s is another setback.” Real have clawed their way up to fourth after a poor start to the defence of their title but remain eight points behind joint leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid and three behind third-placed Malaga. Barca play at Rayo Vallecano and Malaga are away to Espanyol on Saturday, while Atletico host Osasuna on Sunday. Mallorca, coached by the wily and experienced Joaquin Caparros, have made a solid start to their campaign and the Balearic islanders are eighth on 11 points. New signing Giovanni Dos Santos made his debut against Sevilla on Monday and provided two goal assists as Mallorca fell 3-2 at the Sanchez Pizjuan despite twice taking the lead.
The 23-year-old Mexico forward, a graduate of the Barcelona youth academy, signed for Tottenham Hotspur in 2008 but failed to settle and had loan spells with Ipswich Town, Galatasaray and Racing Santander. After helping Mexico win gold at the Olympic Games in London this summer, he sealed a move to Mallorca, where he hopes to find some of the consistency that has so far eluded him. “It’s clear that I will get a lot better as long as I keep getting more time on the pitch, I know that,” Dos Santos said. Barca have their own selection headaches for the Rayo game, especially in defence with centre backs Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique and right back Daniel Alves all injured. They will also almost certainly be without Javier Mascherano after he was sent off in Saturday’s 5-4 win at Deportivo Coruna. Barca said they had lodged an appeal against the dismissal, although the federation is unlikely to exonerate the Argentine.
MONTPELLIER believe they can still play a role in the Ligue 1 fight this season even though, after a mediocre start to the season, the French champions are already running out of time as they host Nice tonight. “A lion never dies. Even if we lose, we must keep our heads high. We will get there, all together,” Morocco midfielder Younes Belhanda told reporters after his team lost 2-1 to Olympiakos in the Champions League on Wednesday. “We were champions last year, we have the qualities to do something again this year.” Montpellier, however, lie 16th in the league standings with eight points from nine games, and have lost two and drawn one of their Champions League games. They already trail Ligue 1 pacesetters Paris St Germain by 11 points. Coach Rene Girard believes his players must be more focused if they are to stand a chance of improving. “A defender must understand he is here to defend”, he said, referring to his team’s dismal defensive performance against Olympiakos.
NEED TO UNDERSTAND “We need to understand that you can’t just play well for 50, 70 minutes. We’ll win again when we understand a game lasts 90 minutes,” said Belhanda. PSG, who beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday, travel to basement side Nancy. also tonight, looking to extend their unbeaten run in the league to 14 games over two seasons. Second-placed Marseille, also on 19 points, host Lyon, third on 18 points, in tomorrow night’s clash after the two sides’ Europa League games on Thursday. Marseille will be without striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, who has been ruled out for six weeks with a broken foot but keeper Steve Mandanda believes France striker Loic Remy, who has been struggling with injuries, will be up to the task. “Loic Remy is an important player in the team,” he told the club’s website (www.om.net). “He is a great player. We know he was decisive last season and I’m sure he will be again this season.”

Last-gasp win for Inter, Liverpool and Newcastle top Europa groups Spurs with work to do after draw
By Mike Collett
By Brian Homewood RODRIGO Palacio snatched an 88th minute win for Inter Milan over Partizan Belgrade in Thursday night’s Europa League action while Lazio were on the wrong end of some late drama in a 1-1 draw at Panathinaikos. Napoli produced another poor away performance, losing 3-1 at Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, and Udinese, the fourth Italian side, suffered a shock 3-1 defeat at Young Boys where Raul Bobadilla scored a hat-trick. Titleholders Atletico Madrid chalked up their third straight group stage win, beating Academica Coimbra 2-1, but Athletic Bilbao, last season’s runners-up, were left on the brink of elimination after losing 2-1 at Lyon. At the San Siro, Palacio headed in a cross from fellow Argentine Diego Milito one minute after Partizan’s Lazar Markovicnearly scored for the Serbs on the break. The win left Inter and Rubin Kazan, who beat Neftci 1-0, level on seven points from three games at the top of Group H. Lazio were gifted a 25th minute lead in Athens when Giourkas Seitaridis’s back pass caught goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis out of position and the ball rolled into the net. Toche equalised for Panathinaikos in stoppage time. Lazio stayed top of Group
Chelsea, Celtic and Champions League slammed
Liverpool beat super-rich Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala at Anfield, courtesy of a rare strike from Stewart Downing J with five points, one clear of Maribor who drew 1-1 at home to Tottenham Hotspur. Jimmy Briand scored an 86th minute winner for Lyon to give the Group I leaders their third straight win and leave Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic third with only one point. Atletico coach Diego Simeone again rested Radamel Falcao who is yet to play in the competition in which he has been the top scorer for the previous two seasons, firstly with Porto and then his current side. They were still too strong for their Portuguese opponents as second half goals from Diego Costa and Emre Belozoglu left the Mattress Makers top of Group B with nine points. Salim Cisse re-
plied for the Portuguese visitors. Bodadilla gave Young Boys a fourth-minute lead when he side-footed in a pass by fellow Argentine Gonzalo Zarate, added a second in the 71st minute following a mistake by Pablo Armero and completed his evening by converting a penalty. Andrea Coda replied for Udinese in the Group A match. It was a good night for English clubs, with Newcastle and Liverpool now both at the top of their groups. Newcastle are looking good to reach the knockout stages after a comfortable 1-0 win over Belgian side Club Bruges. Gabriel Obertan scored the only goal of the game early in the second half.
The Magpies are now three points clear at the top of Group D. They are one of only two teams (with Leverkusen) not to have conceded a goal in the group stage so far. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said it was a “big win” for the team against a tough side. Liverpool are also top of their group after hosting super-rich Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala at Anfield. A rare strike from Stewart Downing secured a 1-0 victory for the Reds. There was no win for Tottenham though who were held to their third straight draw in Europe by Slovenian side N-K Maribor. They went a goal down in the first half, but an equaliser
on the hour from Gilfy Sigerson made sure Spurs picked up a point. They’re sitting third in their group and may struggle to go further. Three of Germany’s four teams won, Bayer Leverkusen leading the way with a 4-0 demolition of Rapid Vienna away from home to go top of Group K. Didier Ya Konan scored with the last kick of the match to give Hanover a 2-1 win at Helsingborg which took them top of Group L and even Bundesliga strugglers Borussia Moechengladbach got in on the act with a 2-0 win over Marseille in Group C. Stuttgart were the exception as they drew 0-0 at home to FC Copenhagen in Group E.
AEL turn to domestic matters By Nemanja Bjedov
AEL boss Jorge Costa saw his side go down 1-0 to Fenerbahce in the Europa League in his first match in charge
CYPRUS champions AEL have no time to dwell on a narrow 1-0 Europa League loss to Turkish side Fenerbahce as the national championship continues this weekend. “As I said before the match, we expected a difficult encounter but I believe that the final score is not a fair one as we deserved more because of the way we performed,” said AEL’s newly-appointed coach Jorge Costa. “We played very well throughout the first half and then in the second half we had 20 minutes during which we lost our focus and could not get organised in midfield, which eventually resulted in conceding a goal. “We improved in the final ten minutes of the match, but were unable to score. It is clear to me that I have a
lot of work to do, because we need to be better than we were tonight, especially offensively,” the 41-year-old Portuguese coach added. “The main problem was our efficiency in front of their goal. In European matches if you have four chances you should score at least twice to get a desired result. Against Fenerbahce we created maybe six, seven opportunities and failed to score a single goal,” Costa concluded. AEL now shift their focus to the domestic league where they find themselves four points adrift of the leading trio AEK, Anorthosis and APOEL. Their next stop will be Ayia Napa on Monday evening in the final match of the round, set to kick-off at 7pm. Omonia host Enosis Neon Paralimni this afternoon at 6pm in the Round 7 opener, while an hour later Apollon take on Doxa Katokopia
at the Tsirion Stadium in Limassol and Nea Salamina face APOEL in Larnaca. “We are definitely looking to win this match. We have more quality, but that does not guarantee us any success on the pitch. What we have to do is to approach the game very seriously and by doing so we will increase our chances of collecting all three points, said APOEL coach Ivan Jovanovic. “Nea Salamina have shown that they are tough opponents as they only lost to AEL in injury time in the last round, so we need to be focused and execute our game plan perfectly,” Jovanovic continued. Three matches are scheduled for tomorrow with Alki and Ethnikos Achnas hosting AEP Paphos and AEK Larnaca respectively, both matches kicking-off at 6pm, while Olympiakos take on Anorthosis at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia at 7pm.
FORMER Barcelona midfielder Bernd Schuster has criticised European champions Chelsea, Scottish champions Celtic and says the Champions League needs revamping in the wake of the latter’s 2-1 defeat at Barcelona on Tuesday. The former Barcelona and West Germany player was angered by Celtic’s defensive performance, which he said mimicked Chelsea’s negative displays in winning the trophy last season. Shuster, who also played for and later managed nine-time European champions Real Madrid, said the current format of the tournament was wrong and should be changed to prevent the kind of match he watched on Tuesday. Celtic took an unexpected 18th minute lead at Barcelona, then defended for much of the match before losing when Jordi Alba scored a stoppage-time winner for the Catalan side. Although Celtic were widely praised for their gutsy rearguard action, Schuster told Spanish radio station ABC Radio Punto: “I’m fed up of seeing these type of matches.
VERY BAD EXAMPLE “There should not be teams like Celtic in the Champions League. We saw it last year with Chelsea. It was a very bad example for football and it is regrettable that they became European champions. “You see Celtic defending with 10 men and almost snatching a point - that is not fair. There should not be teams like Celtic in the Champions League. “I believe the coach of Celtic viewed many times the video of Chelsea last season against Barcelona. He decided to repeat the system, but the ultradefensive system is not football. “Chelsea have now generated a school for teams like Celtic to study. It would have been unjust if a team that defended with 10 men had taken one point in the home of the best club in the world. “UEFA needs to change this phase of the competition if they want to breathe life into the Champions League.” Schuster, 52, who played for the Barcelona side beaten by Steaua Bucharest on penalties in the 1986 European Cup final, is currently without a club after leaving his job as manager of Besiktas in Turkey last year.

Home straight: Ferrari ace Fernando Alonso (left) trails Red Bull rival Sebastian Vettel by six points with only four races remaining of a thrilling season
Ferrari ready to come out fighting in F1 title battle By Alan Baldwin LET down by a faulty wind tunnel, Ferrari and Fernando Alonso must now throw caution to the wind in tomorrow’s Indian Grand Prix after falling behind in the Formula One championship battle. Alonso lost the lead to Red Bull’s double world champion Sebastian Vettel in South Korea in the previous race but the gap between the two is a mere six points with four high-stakes races remaining. The tables could turn again on Sunday but the odds favour Vettel, the 25-yearold German who won the inaugural Indian race last year and can chalk up a fourth consecutive victory in one season for the first time in his Formula One career. Over in the red corner, Ferrari are determined to show they are still very much in the fight while also knowing that any retirement now could be a knockout blow. “Because we don’t currently enjoy an advantage, either in terms of performance or as far as the points situation is concerned, we cannot defend, we must attack and adopt an aggressive approach to car development,” the Italian outfit’s chief designer Nick Tombazis told the team website. That means bringing updates to every race from now on. Ferrari started the season with a car that, apart from being decried as ugly, was also some way off the leaders. A period of intense development narrowed the gap but Red Bull have again taken the initiative. “We need to score seven points more than Sebastian, that will be extremely tough but we believe we can do it,” said
Alonso, who was third in India last year, after Korea. Red Bull introduced their new rear wing ‘Double DRS’ system in Singapore, the start of Vettel’s winning run, that provides extra straight line speed and they will not have been standing stil. Vettel, a natural fan of the Buddh circuit after winning from pole and setting the fastest lap last year, has little time for talk of any psychological advantage he may enjoy over Alonso. The Spaniard, also a double world champion, is in any case as adept at mind games as anyone. “I think we can take nothing for granted, we have to look after ourselves,” said Vettel. “Whether we have a mental advantage or not, psychological advantage or not I don’t really care. I’m not into those kind of things.” Red Bull principal Christian Horner has ruled out imposing so-called ‘team orders’ until Vettel’s Australian team mate Mark Webber, currently 63 points adrift, is mathematically out of the running. The title may be a duel between Vettel and Alonso but they will not have it all their own way at the dusty track south of Delhi where the moneyed world of Formula One contrasts with a backdrop of rural poverty, bullock carts and bicycles. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, runner-up in India last time round, have all their focus on race wins and the constructors’ championship now that their individual title hopes have effectively ended. Kimi Raikkonen, third overall with Lotus, must also be reckoned with even if he has yet to drive the circuit because of his absence to rallying in the last two years.
ANCHESTER United head to Premier League leaders Chelsea on Sunday with Alex Ferguson admitting that not only is he worried about his porous defence but he now has a problem in attack - albeit a “good” one. United, who are second domestically, beat Braga 3-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday after trailing 2-0 inside the first 20 minutes to top Group H with maximum points from their three games. Javier Hernandez, who has often been overlooked this season despite scoring three goals from four starts, netted twice to rescue the win and the Mexican has given manager Ferguson a selection dilemma for the clash at Stamford Bridge. “The boy is improving all the time,” Ferguson told reporters. “He is fantastic in training and he’s always practising. “His goal ratio for us is fantastic. For his second goal he bends around the back of the defender. It is a great ball in from Tom Cleverley but his movement is terrific. He’s given me a problem but that’s a good thing.” With Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck also vying for spots upfront, United look spoilt for choice against a Chelsea side who have their own problems. Among them is the continuing absence of skipper John Terry, serving the second of his four-match English ban for racially abusing Queens rs dePark Rangers nton fender Anton Ferdinand last year. ld They could halso be wither out midfielder pFrank Lampard, who was having a scan njured on the injured calf that caused p out of him to limp 1 ChamChelsea’s 2-1 ue defeat pions League at Shakhtarr Donetsk 8 minutes after only 18
Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool travel to Goodison for the Merseyside derby
Last season’s fixture was a classic, with the Red Devils coming back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 on Tuesday. The weekend’s other high profile match is fourthplaced Everton facing Liverpool in the first Merseyside derby of the season at Goodison Park on Sunday. Champions and thirdplaced Manchester City are at home to Swansea City on Saturday and fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur visit lowly Southampton on Sunday. Despite it still being relatively early in the campaign, Chelsea’s meeting with Unithav a significant ed could have th outcome of bearing on the this season’s title race. su Chelsea’s superb 4-2 comefrom-behind win at Spurs on Sunday was their seventh victo victory out of eight matche this term and matches they host United as one of the only two unb unbeaten sides in th the league, with Ci City being the ot others. Chelsea C lead the table with 22 point points, followed by United and City on Eve 18, Everton on 15 and Spurs leading a trio c of clubs on 14. United, though, have not lost any of their
last five games against Chelsea and their meeting in the league there last season was a classic as they came back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3. That scoreline encapsulates their current problem - potent in attack but weak at the back. United fell behind for the eighth time in 12 games this season against Portugal’s Braga and Ferguson is perplexed. “I can’t understand our defending,” he said. “I can’t get to the bottom of it. We certainly make it difficult for ourselves. If you analyse the goals we are conceding they are all different types. “It is difficult to put my finger on it and it certainly doesn’t give us a good start to games that’s for sure. It is always at home as well. “It is not a problem away from Old Trafford, at least not in terms of early goals. We will sort it though, I’m sure of that.”
