Hopefuls bask in the spotlight A record number of 11 people sign up as candidates for presidentials By Poly Panteldies
A
RECORD 11 people submitted their candidacy yesterday at the Hilton in Nicosia for the February 17 presidential elections. Cameramen, photographers and journalists stalked the comings and goings of the candidates as they each came at a set time with their respective supporters for an orchestrated dance that started at 9am sharp and was over by noon. First up was AKELbacked Stavros Malas whose entourage included former finance minister Kikis Kazamias, AKEL parliamentary representative Nicos Katsourides, and agriculture minister Sophoclis Aletraris who also nominated him as candidate. Escorted by his wife and with AKEL leader Andros Kyprianou by his side, Malas presented his papers and travelled the room to sit on a long and narrow table decorated with a flower arrangement . Around the table, Malas – surrounded by his team – had a chat with Chief Returning Officer Andreas Assiotis as they waited for the election service to confirm that his paperwork was in order. A few signatures later, team Malas took their seat at an area arranged with two couches and a side
table for a relaxed cup of tea before the inevitable statements. We need a leader that can tackle the indebted island’s economy headon, Malas said. AKEL leader Andros Kyprianou took the podium to appeal to “progressive members of the public”, saying Malas was their only hope for reunifying the island, defending the workers, and securing the island’s safety and welfare. It was only the main contenders who sat down for the benefit of photographers and cameramen for that cup of tea. Independent candidate Makaria Antri Stylianou, an assistant head at a primary school, was up next but there were no bell and whistles for her. She submitted her candidacy, paid the €1,710 fee, and in her statement told people they had a choice, to show they have had enough to the political system and create the change they want to see. It was the turn of the head of the Citizen’s Rights Bureau of the Popular Socialist Movement LASOK, Lakis Ioannou, who accused authorities and the media of “silencing” alternative voices. But in the meantime, the vibrant Costas Kyriacou Outopos distracted people by peeking into the room and waving hello as he waited for his turn.

Bright dress code urged for ‘Blue Monday’ WORKERS are being challenged to dress brightly on Monday in a bid to combat the most depressing day of the year. Researchers claim that on the third Monday of January, UK’s collective well-being will to sink to an all-year low. Mental Health Research UK (MHRUK) said that “blue Monday” occurred thanks to a combination of bad weather, debt, the need for Christmas detox and poor motivation. The charity aims to raise awareness of depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) with its new campaign, Blooming Monday. It is calling
on people to dress in colourful clothing to highlight the plight of those who suffer from these conditions and to raise money for research into treatments. Dr Laura Davidson, mental health barrister and trustee of MHRUK, said: “We hope that businesses, colleges and organisations will take part in Blooming Monday on January 21. “Down with drab, dreary colours. This Monday let’s brighten up Britain. “This is not just about awareness of seasonal affective disorder and depression, but it’s also a well-being campaign.

Home PR firm hired to counter negative reports
Shiarly: we did what they asked and more ‘There are many people in Europe who believe that it was a mistake to go for a PSI and I say it as well’ said finance minster
By George Psyllides CYPRUS has hired an international communications firm to help its bid to secure financial assistance, especially in light of recent negative reports on the country’s money laundering record. According to PRWeek, a weekly public relations publication, Cyprus has hired FTI consulting as it tries to put out its side of the story amid a flurry of negative reports, mainly in the German media. The firm has been hired by the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA) – a non-profit limited company fully funded by the government – which initially invited bids at the end of 2011 for a brief to increase direct investment to Cyprus. It has however evolved to include support and advice to the finance ministry and the Central Bank during the bailout process, PRWeek said, a process that may run into difficulties after a number of German lawmakers, who would have to approve any bailout, voiced concerns about a rescue for Cyprus because of its reputation of being a popular tax haven for wealthy Russians.
CYPRUS is asking its EU partners for a loan, not a gift, Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly said yesterday, saying a write-down of Greek debt, which effectively forced the island to seek a bailout, was a mistake. “The Greek PSI (debt write-down) was a gift to Greece,” Shiarly told Reuters in an interview. “We are not asking for a gift. We are asking for understanding, and a loan on fair terms so we can overcome these financial difficulties we are facing at the moment.” The minister’s comment could be viewed as a response to those claiming that European taxpayer money would be effectively bailing out Russian tax evaders. A number of lawmakers from Germany’s parliament, which would have to approve any bailout, have voiced concerns about a rescue for Cyprus. The island denied the allegations, stressing that it does more to fight money laundering than other eurozone states. The write-down, which cost Cypriot banks some €4.5 billion in losses, was a political decision taken by EU leaders, including President Demetris Christofias. “There are many people in Europe who believe that it was a mistake to go for a PSI. I say it as well,” said Shiarly. The Greek debt write-
MAFIOSI In November, Germany’s Der Spiegel cited a German intelligence agency report as saying “Russian oligarchs, business people and mafiosi” would benefit most from any bailout and that Cyprus was a “gateway for money laundering in the EU.” Cyprus has denied the allegations, saying it was doing more to fight money laundering than other eurozone countries. Neil Doyle, managing director in FTI’s strategic communications practice, was quoted by PRWeek as saying: “We are trying to provide balance to what has been biased coverage on what is really going on … the Cypriot story is a positive one, but the underlying story isn’t coming out.” Doyle suggested that Cyprus was plagued by ‘legacy issues’ from before its EU membership. FTI will assume its inward investment brief after conclusion of the bailout the talks and the presidential elections in mid February. “Our hope is to have a more balanced coverage and at least set the facts straight,” FTI senior managing director Cleopatra Kitti, told the Cyprus Mail. FTI Consulting has previously worked with the governments of Hungary and Iceland, and the Bank of Spain.

down “caused a lot of upheaval and one of the problems we are facing - in fact, one of the main reasons we are facing problems is because we accepted the PSI proposal which has added some 25 per cent to our national debt,” the minister added. Cyprus says it has gone the extra mile to introduce reforms, including public sector cutbacks, pension reform and tax hikes. “We did what was expected of us, and more,” Shiarly said.
PRIVATISATIONS The minister did not rule out privatisations if needed to seal a bailout for the island and make a debt even as high as €17.5 billion sustainable. “There is a provision, a reference, to a possible privatisation if need be,” Shiarly said, referring to a draft bailout deal, “that will be considered by us at the time the (bank recapitalisation) figure is known, but not until then.” Much now hinges on an asset quality review expected imminently on Cypriot bank recapitalisation needs. The company carrying out the review was expected to publish the total amount late yesterday, but ongoing negotiations could mean it will not be known before a Eurogroup meeting on Monday expected to discuss Cyprus. Cypriot authori-
ties are trying to adjust the worst-case scenario figure downwards to avoid the risk of the island’s debt being deemed unsustainable. “I very much doubt there will be discussion that could lead to a specific decision,” Shiarly told state radio earlier yesterday. “It is unavoidable that another date will be set to discuss matters when figures are at our disposal.” Preliminary estimates put the island’s bailout at €17.5 billion – €10 billion will go towards bank recapitalisation – raising concerns that it will be difficult to pay off. But even with an extreme scenario of a €17 billion to €17.5 billion bailout total, “the debt can be made sustainable,” Shiarly said. In any case, it appears that any decisions will be deferred until after the February presidential elections. “It is a fair bet that a final decision will not be made under the present government, but will be one of the first tasks of the next government, after the elections on February 17th,” a senior EU official, involved in the talks said. “In the second half of March there is the possibility of coming to an agreement on a programme,” the official said, adding the government was well funded until then. High-tech viewing of independent candidate Makaria Antri Stylianou
And they all want to save the country (continued from front page) Wearing a green bandana, a sporty green jacket and jeans, Outopos walked into the Hilton all smiles. He was the only male candidate who eschewed a suit. Ripples of conversation accompanied his outlandish statements of a Mormon conspiracy against democracy, and his version of a utopian society (hence his moniker Outopos). He said the answer to the financial crisis was lovemaking. Though some made a joke of the candidacy, a police officer jumped in to defend him. “Would you have the guts to stand in front of all these television cameras?” he asked as the day was winding down and they were waiting for the closing statements. Others had no problem standing in front of the cameras. Praxoula AntoniadouKyriacou has already been making headlines for singing in entertainment charity show ‘DanSing For You, broadcast by MEGA TV.
She sang a duet with well known Greek singer Dakis and has even performed in spoof show ‘Patates Antinachtes’ as herself. She has also reportedly petitioned the director of a play showing in Anemona theatre to dabble in the play. Daily Phileleftheros has reported that she will have a singing part in the play, though Antoniadou-Kyriacou did not confirm or deny the report yesterday. Looking immaculate in a dark pink skirt suit, pearls gracing her neck, she asked people to break free from the old-style politics and to choose someone who could give them a way out of the crisis. As she made her statements, jubilant main contender, DISY-leader Nicos Anastasiades, was already posing for the cameras himself with family, grandchildren, friends, and members of his party and supporting partners DIKO. entourage, and Anastasiades - smile glued on his face – seemed all too happy to stand further out to accommodate the crowds. An all-star procession walked inside. In addition to DISY and DIKO brass, his numerous supporters included popular singer Michalis Hadjiyiannis; the outspoken psychiatrist, TV personality and newspaper columnist Yiangos Mikellides; Nobel laureate Christophoros Pissarides - who also nominated him - and the Archbishopric’s accountant Yiannos Charilaou, to name but a few. Photographers jostled to photograph Anastasiades and his associates, irking the cameramen who had no clear shot of the sit-down on the couches, the reserve of the big players. The last of the main contenders, EDEK-backed Giorgos Lillikas, looked dapper and confident and even more so when honorary EDEK president Dr Vassos Lyssarides showed up just in time to take his place on the comfortable couches. “The doctor is coming,” EDEK leader Yiannakis Omirou said, as he joined Lillikas who had already filed his candidacy. Lyssarides, affectionately referred to as ‘the doctor’ firmly declared his support for Lillikas. Lillikas was nominated by Irene Mandoles, whose mother Charita has been a prominent figure in efforts to discover the whereabouts of missing persons, including her husband and his family. And to reinforce his message that he was a candidate of the people, the eight people vouching for Lillikas’ candidacy were all unemployed. Candidates need to be nominated by someone, and vouched for by eight others for their application to be valid. Economist Andreas An-

He lingered for a while wondering if he could get anyone to support him. He said that he wanted to run as president so he could express himself. The other candidates had harnessed enough supporters. The far right party ELAM candidate Georgios Charalambous kept a low profile. Andreas Efstratiou asked people to support him because politicians had failed them. Farmer Solon Gregoriou asked people to wake up from their slumbers, while another independent, Loucas Stavrou, warned people that the politicians they vote power “will continue eating from silver spoons, throwing leftovers to the people.” Meanwhile, parliament has decided to keep the ballots open for an hour longer on voting day. Voters will have until 6pm to vote on February 17.

Court visits scene of the Hadjicostis murder By Stefanos Evripidou THE NICOSIA Criminal Court yesterday visited the site where media boss Andis Hadjicostis was murdered three years ago, following a request from the defence team of the four accused in the murder trial. The court visited the crime scene, near the US Embassy in the capital, under heavy police escort at around midday. Judges presiding over the murder trial took the opportunity to examine the scene of the murder where Hadjicostis - CEO of family-controlled DIAS media group and Sigma TV - died after being shot twice outside his home on January 12, 2010. They also followed the route the alleged killers took after Hadjicostis was murdered, going from Ayia Eleni Street to Vasilis Michaelides Street near Finlandia taxi office. Heightened security measures were in place before and during the court’s visit. Facing murder charges are the alleged masterminds, former television presenter Elena Skordelli and her
brother Tasos Krasopoulis, alleged shooter Gregoris Xenofontos, and alleged fixer Andreas Gregoriou. Defence lawyers for the accused had also requested that the court make a nighttime visit to the buffer zone near the Massari dam, where the murder weapon was allegedly disposed of. However, during yesterday’s morning hearing in the courtroom, state prosecutor Elena Kleopa informed the court that police headquarters would not allow any visit to the buffer zone at night for security reasons, saying it would pose serious risks and that the police could not guarantee the court’s safety. Kleopa also presented a written response from the UN saying that UNFICYP could not escort the court to the area at night. Defence lawyer for Elena Skordelli, Michalis Kyprianou, questioned the motives of police, saying the force did not want the court to see these locations with its own eyes. The presiding judge Haris Solomonides berated the lawyer for questioning the views of the police, UN and prosecution, adding that a night visit would not be possible.
The judges also followed the route the alleged killers took by motorbike after the murder
‘In league with troika’ Sylikiotis accuses opposition of backroom dealings By Stefanos Evripidou COMMERCE MINISTER Neoclis Sylikiotis yesterday accused the opposition of obeying the commands of the troika and making a “behind the scenes” agreement not to let the draft bill on a national hydrocarbons fund pass through parliament. Speaking to reporters, Sylikiotis repeated his argument that the memorandum of understanding with the troika states clearly that the government is obliged to submit draft legislation on the hydrocarbons fund and an action plan on hydrocarbons exploitation to the troika by the end of June “for review” and only for review. “An agreement with the troika on the draft bills is not required,” he said. “It is clear that in the memorandum there is no reference to an agreement, though the troika is suggesting that they not only need to review (the draft legislation) but agree to it too,” said Sylikiotis, argu-
ing that the troika is trying to move the goalposts after the memorandum was agreed with the government. “And that is why we should proceed on the basis of what we agreed in the memorandum with the troika,” he said. Stating his case, Sylikiotis revealed correspondence between the troika and the finance minister, where the international lenders wrote: “There is no need to rush this bill through parliament at this stage. Please make sure that this bill does not go to parliament before proper review and agreement by the Troika partners.” Cyprus does not need close consultation with the European Commission, European Central Bank and IMF on what to do with its hydrocarbon reserves, he argued. “If we feel we need their contribution, we will ask. Certainly, we will listen carefully and take seriously into account any observations they make on the draft bills we will send them,” added the minister.

Sylikiotis denounced “the opposition and those who cooperated towards this goal, to agree behind the scenes with the troika not to approve this bill on the creation of a national hydrocarbons fund.” He accused the opposition of “failing to rise to the occasion and approve the bill that was before them, preferring to obey the commands of the troika”. He added that the draft bill was a near carbon copy of the Norwegian hydrocarbon fund. The minister also questioned what will happen when the govern-
ment soon receives around €200m in signature bonuses for awarding more offshore exploration licences in its exclusive economic zone. The government is obliged to put half the money into state coffers, as agreed with the troika, but the other half could have been put in the proposed hydrocarbon fund and used to invest in natural gas infrastructure. Instead, it looks more likely, that the €100m will fall into the hands of the new government post-February elections, and towards plugging the hole in state finances.

New rules on driving licences Licences from now on will be in the ‘credit card’ form FROM today all new driving licences issued across the EU will be in the form of a plastic ‘credit card’ with a standard European format and tougher security protection, the Commission announced yesterday . The new European licence will progressively replace the more than 100 different paper and plastic models currently in use by more than 300 million drivers across the EU. It is part of a broader package of measures coming into force designed to enhance free movement, tackle driving licence fraud and improve road safety across the EU. “Traffic police across Europe are currently expected to recognise more than 100 different types of paper and plastic driving licence. ID photos may be long out of date, the categories for which the driver is licenced unclear and the document may be easy to forge. Fake driving licences are a licence to kill, that is why we need
licences which are easy to read, easy to understand and very difficult to falsify,” said a statement from the Commission. All new European driving licences will be issued according to a new format, a plastic ‘credit card’, with a photo and standard information requirements easy to recognise and read across the EU. Existing licences are not affected, but will be changed to the new format at the time of renewal or at the latest by 2033. The European driving licence can be adapted to incorporate national symbols as decided by each Member State. The new driving licence includes a number of security features to make it “tamper proof” and to avoid falsification. In addition, it is backed up by the creation of a European electronic data exchange system to facilitate the exchange of information between national administrations. This will simplify the process for managing driving li-
Police across Europe are currently expected to recognise more than 100 different types of paper and plastic licences cences for people changing residence from one Member State to another. It will also significantly help to prohibit “driving licence tourism” and fraud, for example, to enforce the new, more strin-
gent prohibition, of a Member State issuing a licence to someone who has already had their licence withdrawn, suspended or restricted by another Member State. The regular renewal of licences “central to tackling fraud and improving road safety is the need for a regular renewal of licences across the EU. Under the new rules, licences must be renewed, for car drivers and motorcyclists, every 10-15 years, depending on the Member State. For buses and lorry drivers licences must be renewed every five years and a medical check-up will be necessary for renewal,” the Commission said.
This is an administrative renewal, and does not require any additional testing. It ensures that licencing information, photos etc. are kept up to date, security features on cards can be regularly updated to new technology and Member States have constantly updated information about the licences in circulation. The European driving licence regime also strengthens protection for the most vulnerable categories of road users, said the Commission. This includes: a higher age limit for the most powerful motorbikes, up from the existing 21 to 24 years. The new regime requires driving experience of a minimum of
four years instead of two. Mopeds will also constitute a new vehicle category and moped licence candidates will from now on be required to pass a theory test. Member States may also introduce skill and behaviour tests and medical examinations. The EU sets a minimum recommended age of 16 years at which licences are mutually recognised by all Members States. Prior to this there were no minimum EU requirements for mopeds. Under the new rules, driving examiners will have to comply with minimum standards as regards their initial qualification and periodic training.
Second-place win in 2012 brings national FameLab back again
Veteran Turkish journalist and author Mehmet Ali Birand dies
By Despina Procopiou
TURKISH journalist Mehmet Ali Birand, whose documentaries and books helped shape many Turks’ understanding of their recent tumultuous history, died in Istanbul late on Thursday. Birand suffered cardiac arrest due to complications while undergoing gallbladder surgery, according to the Hurriyet Daily News for which he worked. His book “30 Hot Days” was an insider-like account of the international manoeuvring by Britain, the United States, Turkey and Greece that followed Turkey’s 1974 invasion of Cyprus. Birand was a regular attendee at events involving major developments on Cyprus over the years. The 71-year-old had been battling cancer, for which he had had surgery in 2011. With a career spanning almost 50 years, Birand interviewed world leaders from Bill Clinton to Francois Mitterrand to Saddam Hussein. He worked mainly as a newspaper columnist and anchorman, including at CNN Turk.
AFTER last year’s success with Cypriot Ioannis Karypides winning 2nd place at FameLab, the science competition is back. European House, and the British Council in collaboration with the Research Promotion Foundation yesterday announced the commencement of the 3rd national FameLab competition, taking place in May this year. Cyprus has a strong background in the history of the contest. In 2011, Myrtani Pieri, the first Cypriot to take part, was also the first woman to win the contest. Last year, Ioannis Karypides won 2nd prize. The goal of the contest is to encourage the general public, and young scientists in particular, to inspire and highlight the people’s imagination for 21st century science. Anyone aged 18 or over who studies or works in the fields of science, technology, engineering, maths or medicine can participate. Undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, professors, scientists, and researchers can all take part. The ten finalists will get to participate in a two-day ‘MasterClass’ workshop on science communication. The three finalists will receive €2,000, €1,000, and €500 respectively. The international FameLab competition will take place in June, in Cheltenham, UK where contestants must compete in English, unlike the national competition (Greek and English). The criteria for evaluation are charisma, content, and clarity of each contestant’s presentation, said the European Office. Applications for participation expire on January 31. The event is sponsored by the University of Cyprus, the University of Nicosia, and Top Kinisis.

Peyia cutting water supply of those with overdue bills By Bejay Browne WITH over €2 million still owed to Peyia municipality in outstanding taxes, the cash strapped municipality is cutting the water supply to non payers. Peyia councillor Linda Leblanc said: “The council decided that the water supply will be cut if outstanding payments are not paid.” According to Leblanc, individuals, holiday rental villas and businesses have overdue water bills. “The situation in Peyia is still dire, and the municipality has to keep increasing its overdraft to keep everything going. It’s a struggle to pay staff every month; the monthly wage bill is around €100,000,” said Leblanc.

Health Minister Androulla Agrotou: it’s about respect for human rights
Move at last for non-psychiatric Ward 14 patients ‘These people were chucked in Athalassa. Most of them grew up in a mental hospital’ By Maria Christofide A WARD at the Athalassa Psychiatric Hospital in Nicosia, which has been home to 13 people with severe learning and behavioural disorders, some for decades, is to be closed down, the labour and health ministers said yesterday. Health Minister, Androulla Agrotou and Labour Minister, Sotiroulla Charalambous yesterday presented a programme for the closure of Ward 14 at the hospital where people were thrown and forgotten about because there was nowhere else to send them. The closure, which will be completed by May, only comes after years of discussion about where the patients in Ward 14 could be helped. Agrotou said the government had realised that the eight men and five women in the ward could no longer be expected to live in a psychiatric hospital and are to be rehabilitated back into the community. “Respect for human rights requires immediate de-institutionalisation and reinte-
gration into society, with full respect for human dignity and inalienable rights,” she said. She said their condition did not make them more dangerous to either themselves or to others compared to the general population. The Athalassa Hospital is the only specialised mental hospital in Cyprus. The hospital received criticism from the Ombudswoman in her 2011 report where she said it looked like a “throwback to institutions from older times.” For Ward 14 in particular, the Ombudswoman noted that living conditions were not according to international principles for the appropriate treatment of these patients. The patients of Ward 14 suffer severe learning and behaviour disorders and some of them are also autistic or epileptic. Yiannis Kalakoutas, the Mental Health Services Director said: “The families of these persons did not want them and they were chucked into Athalassa. Most them came here when they were children and they grew up in
the mental hospital”. The majority of the patients, aged between 25 and 55, have been in Athalassa for 15 years on average. Director of the Department of Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities Christina Flourentzou said these patients were placed “in the wrong institution with the wrong services” and the reason that happened was because there was a lack of other appropriate institutions. Only eight of the 13 patients will initially be placed on the rehabilitation programme while the remaining five will be placed in other units of the Athalassa hospital. The rehabilitation programme will last two years, gradually placing the patients in protected homes staffed by 24-hour carers within communities. Since the Ministry of Labour has yet to declare a competition for a non-governmental organisation to find and operate the homes, it is unknown where they will be. Flourentzou said the tendering process would be completed in two to three months. The rehabilitation programme will cost €550.000.
Over €2 million in unpaid taxes remains outstanding including licence fees, rubbish and water bills. “The good news is that people are starting to pay their outstanding taxes and at least one developer has kept to the agreement from earlier last year of monthly payments to clear outstanding taxes owed to the municipality,” Leblanc added. But the councillor noted that at least one other developer is still delaying payments, and owes around €800,000. One reason for the delay is that the company, which rents the beach kiosks at Coral Bay, had requested some reductions and the subject was constantly being postponed from one council meeting to the next. “It is likely there will be some reduction
in rent, due to a number of issues, including the missing sand, which wasn’t rectified until well into the tourist season.” As the financial crisis tightens its grip on the cash-strapped municipality, the Peyia budget for 2013 has been reduced again and expenses have been slashed. Leblanc said: “The total income for Peyia is estimated at around €5.57 million.
ANNUAL SUBSIDY “The annual state subsidy has been reduced again, staff overtime and salary cuts are still in force. We are taking measures to cut costs, including better control of municipality vehicles and reducing stadium costs.” In the meantime, Leblanc says that it also appears as if some consumers have been overcharged for their water supply, some by as much as €100. “It appears as if the municipality hasn’t been reading some meters on a regular basis which has resulted in estimated bills being issued. “We have discovered that some residents have inflated water bills,” she said. “We need to find out why this has happened and the people must be given their money back.” The practice in Peyia says Leblanc, is of billing for small amounts quarterly and then adding the accumulation to a future bill which results in higher tariffs. “If there are residents facing similar situations we can help. They need to note meter readings at regular intervals and send us an email if they are being overcharged,” she said.

Cameron pledges to hunt down terrorists PM updates sombre House of Commons on Algeria crisis By David Hughes, Tim Sculthorpe and Elizabeth Barrett DAVID Cameron has promised the UK will do everything it can to hunt down the terrorists responsible for the “brutal and savage” attack in Algeria. The Prime Minister updated a sombre House of Commons following the attack on a gas installation in the Sahara desert in which at least one Briton was killed and others were taken captive. “There is no justification for this hostage-taking and we will continue to do everything we can to hunt the people down who are responsible for this and other such terrorist outrages,” he told MPs. The Prime Minister said: “I’m sure the whole House will share my disgust and condemnation at this brutal and savage terrorist attack that has been unfolding in Algeria. “Our thoughts and prayers this morning are with those still caught up in this incident, with their families who are waiting anxiously for news, and with those who have already lost loved ones.” The Prime Minister said the latest information on the number of Britons at risk had been “quite significantly reduced” from the reports overnight suggesting 30 were involved. Cameron said he had chaired a further meeting of the Cobra emergency committee yesterday morning and spoken to his Algerian counterpart Abdelmalek Sellal. The Prime Minister said a terrorist group believed to be operating under Mokhtar Belmokhtar launched a “heavily armed” assault on
buses en route to the airfield at In Amenas before attacking the residential compound and gas facility. Two of those travelling in the convoy to the airfield were killed, including a Briton. “A number of other workers were taken hostage by the terrorists in separate locations, both at the residential compound and at the gas facility. “The precise numbers involved remain unclear at this stage, the hostages included British nations along with the nationals of at least seven other countries and of course many Algerians.” The Prime Minister said he had offered technical and intelligence support to the Algerians, including experts in hostage negotiation and rescue. Cameron had also urged the Algerian authorities to consult him and other foreign leaders before any action. But a military raid was launched against the terrorists yesterday and Cameron said: “We were not informed in advance. I was told by the Algerian prime minister while it was taking place. “He said that the terrorists had tried to flee, that they judged there to be an immediate threat to the lives of the hostages and had felt obliged to respond. “When I spoke to the Algerian prime minister later last night, he told me that this first operation was complete, but this is a large and complex site and they are still pursuing terrorists and possibly some of the hostages in other areas of the site.” Yesterday morning, the Algerian prime minister told Cameron they were “looking at all possible routes to resolve this crisis”.
A cyclist makes his way through the snow near Worcester yesterday. Britain’s transport network began to buckle yesterday as heavy snow swept the UK. Flights were cancelled at the country’s busiest airport while train com-
panies axed rail services and roads were closed as the wintry conditions set in. Motorists were urged to avoid all but essential journeys, while forecasts also forced hundreds of schools to shut their doors
‘UK to drift out of EU without reforms’ BRITAIN will drift out of the European Union and the European project will fail unless the bloc tackles three serious problems it faces, Prime Minister David Cameron had planned to say in a postponed speech yesterday. Cameron delayed the long-anticipated address on Europe at the last minute to deal with the hostage crisis in Algeria. Aides said a new date and venue would be announced later. He had been expected to spell out his plans to renegotiate Britain’s membership of the 27-nation bloc and to promise a rare referendum on any deal he struck. Some politicians said that move could redefine Britain’s role in the world, alienate key allies and determine Cameron’s own political fate. Cameron had been planning to say that the EU faces three major challenges: the eurozone debt crisis, faltering competitiveness and declining public support, particularly in Britain. “If we don’t address these challenges, the danger is that Europe will fail and the British people will drift towards the exit,” Cameron had been due to say, according to extracts of his postponed speech released by his office. “I do not want that to happen. I want the European Union to be a success and I
Cameron delayed the long-awaited speech to deal with the Algeria crisis want a relationship between Britain and the EU that keeps us in it.” But, he intended to say there was growing frustration about the widening gap between the EU and its 500 million citizens, and that the status quo was untenable. Harsh austerity measures imposed in many European states are making the problem worse, Cameron planned to say. “There is a growing frustration that the
EU is seen as something that is done to people rather than acting on their behalf. And this is being intensified by the very solutions required to resolve the economic problems,” he was going to say. “People are increasingly frustrated that decisions taken further and further away from them mean their living standards are slashed through enforced austerity or their taxes are used to bail out governments on the other side of the continent.” Cameron, who wants to stay inside the EU, has argued that the upheaval created by the eurozone crisis has given Britain a chance to renegotiate the terms of its membership of the bloc. There was no mention in the advance extracts of a possible referendum on Britain’s role in Europe. International allies, business leaders and political rivals have all warned that the debate over Britain’s future in Europe risks isolating London and could pave the way for a British departure from the EU after 40 years. But Cameron had been due to say it would be wrong to avoid the debate on reforming Europe and Britain’s place in the Union and that voters across the continent were losing patience with the EU.
Couple guilty of son’s methadone death Gift shoes stacked up for Kate on tour A COUPLE wept in court yesterday as they were convicted of the manslaughter of their two-year-old son who died after drinking methadone. Riley Pettipierre died in hospital after drinking the heroin substitute from a beaker left in a bedroom at his family’s flat in Belper, Derbyshire, last March. Yesterday, a jury at Nottingham Crown Court found his parents, Sally Dent, 33, and Shaun Binfield, 45, guilty of his manslaughter following a two-week trial. Following the verdict, Judge John Milmo QC thanked the jury for dealing with such an “emotionally charged” case. During the two-week trial, the jury heard Dent had a history of drug use going back many years and was prescribed methadone to try to rid her of the habit.
Dent regularly sold some of her methadone to other drug addicts to make extra money and was struggling to kick her addiction, the court was told. The jurors heard that a green and yellow child’s beaker of the drug was left in the bedroom on March 12 last year so Dent could drink from it during the night if she needed it. The next morning Dent, who had taken heroin the night before, woke to find Riley unconscious next to her in bed after the toddler drank the drug from the beaker. The couple told the court a cup was kept on top of the wardrobe in their bedroom but had been moved on that occasion because it was more convenient for Dent. Binfield fought back tears as he admitted missing three chances to move the cup, which the child managed to get hold of and drink from.
THE Duchess of Cambridge returned from her Diamond Jubilee tour of south east Asia and the south Pacific laden with enough gifts for a complete outfit - including six pairs of shoes. William and Kate toured the region last autumn celebrating the Queen’s 60year reign and were given everything from woven palm mats and a carved club, to books, local produce and musical instruments. But the Duchess, whose wardrobe choices have seen her become a fashion
icon, received many clothes and accessories during her travels. Raja Permaisuri Agong, the consort of Malaysia’s sovereign The Agong, gave Kate a traditional dress, two clutch bags and six pairs of shoes. If Kate was still unsure about what to wear, The Agong gave her a batik dyed dress. The Duchess’s Malaysian look was completed by a twin-set necklace of South Sea pearls - a gift from Rosmah Mansor, the wife of Malaysia’s prime minister
Najib Razak. The Duke was not left behind in the sartorial stakes after receiving a jacket and batik printed shirt from an un-named individual in Malaysia and a linen shirt and a pair of cufflinks from Raffles, where celebrities like Charlie Chaplin, Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Jackson have stayed. Prince Harry was given a practical present during an official trip to Brazil last March that he may find hard not to use, a personalised number plate spelling out ‘Harry’.

Vatican appoints new head of Irish church
Bolshoi’s artistic director fights for sight after attack
Predecessor was tarred in abuse scandal
AN unknown attacker threw acid in the face of the artistic director of Russia’s prestigious Bolshoi Ballet, endangering his eyesight, in what police and colleagues said yesterday was the culmination of a two-week campaign of intimidation. Sergei Filin, a former leading dancer at the Bolshoi who has been in the high-pressure job at the heart of Russian culture for nearly two years, was attacked outside his Moscow apartment building as he returned from the theatre late on Thursday. Such is the power and prestige of the post in Russian life that Anatoly Iksanov, director of the Bolshoi, said he believed the attack was a product of envy or rivalry. Filin, 42, had already reported having his car tyres slashed and his emails hacked, as well as receiving repeated nuisance calls from someone who stayed silent when he answered. The culprit “should be sought among those for whom it was beneficial to compromise the theatre leadership”, Iksanov told reporters. “This two-week campaign has end-
The Vatican’s move was seen as an attempt to give tarred Cardinal Sean Brady (pictured) a soft exit
By Philip Pullella POPE Benedict yesterday appointed the new head of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland to succeed Cardinal Sean Brady, whose tenure has been plagued by scandal over the sexual abuse of children on the predominantly Roman Catholic island. The Vatican said Monsignor Eamon Martin, 51, had been named “coadjutor” archbishop of Armagh, meaning he will automatically succeed Brady when he retires next year. Brady, who will remain primate until his retirement, has resisted calls by three of the four main parties in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland’s deputy first minister to resign over the sexual abuse scandal. The Vatican’s move was seen as an attempt to give him a soft exit. While it spared him the embarrassment of stepping down before his scheduled retirement, he will effectively be sidestepped as Martin takes over the running of the diocese. Armagh, which is in Northern Ireland, is a particularly significant diocese because its archbishop has the title
“Primate of All Ireland,” the senior Church position on the divided island. A BBC television documentary last year reported that Brady failed to warn parents their children were being sexually abused by a priest in 1975 after he had been given the information by one of the victims. The abuser, Father Brendan Smyth, died in 1997, just one month into a 12-year sentence after pleading guilty to 74 charges of indecent and sexual abuse of boys and girls for more than 30 years. Brady apologised at the time of the documentary but said it was misleading. The Church in Ireland, where for centuries reli-
gion was embedded in the national psyche, has been rocked by a series of reports of child sex abuse stretching back decades and of leaders’ complicity in covering them up. Ireland last year closed its embassy to the Vatican, one of its oldest diplomatic missions, after relations hit an all-time low over the abuse scandals. “I am saddened that many good Catholics were let down so badly over the issue of abuse and that some have even stopped practising their faith,” Martin said in a statement about his appointment. “As Church, we must continue in our efforts to bring
India has jurisdiction to try Italian marines INDIA has jurisdiction to try two Italian marines charged with killing two fishermen, the country’s Supreme Court said in a longawaiting ruling yesterday, setting the stage for a criminal trial that could further sour ties between India and Italy. The marines, members of a military security team protecting a cargo ship, Enrica Lexie, say they mistook the fishermen for pirates off the southern Indian state of Kerala in February 2012. Italy went to the New Delhi Supreme Court last year to challenge India’s right to try the sailors, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, arguing that the shooting had taken place in international waters, outside the jurisdiction of Indian courts. The Supreme Court ruled that Kerala state courts did not have the authority to adjudicate in the case and ordered that a special federal court be set up to try the marines, lawyers who attended the hearing said afterwards.
“The relief for the marines is that at least they won’t be prosecuted by Kerala,” Diljeet Titus, one of the lawyers representing the Italian marines, told Reuters. There were no immediate details of the reasons for the court’s decision in a case that has caused a diplomatic rift between Italy and India, which have traditionally had good relations. In Rome, the government said the decision was “encouraging” and that its main objective was to bring the marines home. Indian authorities had argued the shooting took place in a “contiguous zone” where Indian law applies. Italian embassy officials declined to comment to reporters outside the court. “The government of India should ensure they are brought to the book, otherwise nobody will value Indian lives,” said Father John Churchill, a priest and relative of 19year-old Ajesh Binki, one of the slain fishermen, as he welcomed the court’s decision.
Galliano starts comeback at Oscar de la Renta DISGRACED fashion designer John Galliano is making his return to the industry with a temporary residency at Oscar de la Renta’s studio in New York, de la Renta said yesterday. The British designer, who was fired by Dior in 2011 after he was caught on camera making anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris cafe, will
spend the next three weeks with de la Renta as he prepares for his forthcoming New York Fashion Week show. “He has worked long and hard on his recovery, and I’m happy to give him the opportunity to reimmerse himself in the world of fashion and reacclimate in an environment where he
has been so creative,” de la Renta said in a statement confirming Galliano’s stint. De la Renta added that he had known Galliano for years and said “I’m a great admirer of his talent.” Galliano, 52, said an addiction to drugs and alcohol had left him out of control and he was determined to make amends.
healing to victims and ensure that young people are always protected, respected and nurtured,” he said.
Targeted: Sergei Filin ed tragically and despicably,” he said. Iksanov said Filin had told him he believed he had been followed home, and that the attacker had called him by name before throwing acid on his face. “There are very serious burns on his face, in his ears, his forehead, his mouth, and of course there are serious concerns about his eyesight,” he said. Ekho Moskvy radio said Filin had suffered third-degree burns and that doctors believed it would take him at least six months to recover. Channel One television said doctors were “trying to save his eyesight”.

World WORLD TODAY Probe officer found dead AN officer who was investigating a corruption case against Pakistan’s prime minister has been found dead in the capital, Islamabad, police said yesterday. Senior police officer Bani Yamin said Kamran Faisal was found hanged from a ceiling fan in his room at a government dormitory. Yamin said police are investigating whether Faisal killed himself. Faisal’s death came days after the Supreme Court ordered the arrest of Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and 15 others in connection with an old corruption case the officer was investigating. The prime minister was implicated in the case when he was minister of water and power. At the time, he oversaw the import of short-term power stations which cost the government millions of dollars but produced little energy.
Sri Lanka slammed by UN UNITED Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay has accused Sri Lanka of “gross interference” in the judiciary, warning that its removal of the chief justice could jeopardise efforts to prosecute war crimes. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed a close ally as chief justice on Tuesday, two days after sacking the previous top judge for impeachment despite opposition from the Supreme Court. “The removal of the Chief Justice through a flawed process - which has been deemed unconstitutional by the highest courts of the land - is, in the High Commissioner’s view, gross interference in the independence of the judiciary and a calamitous setback for the rule of law in Sri Lanka,” Pillay’s spokesman Rupert Colville told a news briefing in Geneva yesterday.

Police said the man’s body was found in a burned-out car near the small town of Seaton, about 120 miles (200km) east of Melbourne in Victoria state. The man is the first person confirmed killed in the hundreds of fires which have been raging across the continent since the Australian summer began.
Myanmar govt announces truce with Kachin rebels Myanmar army ceasefire starts today By Aung Hla Tun THE Myanmar military will observe a ceasefire in its fight with ethnic Kachin rebels with effect from today, state television reported, but rebels would not immediately commit to uphold the truce. President Thein Sein issued the ceasefire order to the military hours after a parliamentary motion calling for a ceasefire was unanimously passed. Twenty months of fighting between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Myanmar’s military has displaced tens of thousands of people and raised doubts about the sincerity of reforms aimed at ending decades of ethnic tensions in Myanmar, also known as Burma. The announcement from the state Information Committee said the ceasefire would take effect from 0600 today but only applied to the Myanmar army, the Tatmadaw, in the La Ja Yang area where fighting has been fiercest. “In order to let the tension
Medical staff at Laiza hospital carry a man on a stretcher after he was injured during an artillery attack in downtown Laiza, at the Kachin Independence Army HQ lessen in an armed conflict, both parties need to stop fighting. The Kachin Independence Army is urged to instruct their troops not to attack the Tatmadaw,” the broadcast said. The chief of the KIA’s negotiation team, Sumlut Gam, said the announcement was “good to hear” but the KIA
would hold off discussion of Myanmar’s ceasefire order until Saturday. He had been unaware of the broadcast. The KIA withdrew soldiers from the La Ja Yang area after a successful offensive by Myanmar’s troops, said Mark Farmaner, director of the human rights group Burma Campaign UK.
“The offensive has ended because they won the battle, but they are trying to spin that they are responding to parliament. Praising the Burmese government for ending this offensive would be praising them for winning a battle where they also killed civilians,” he told Reuters. Colonel James Lum Dau,
a KIA spokesman based in Thailand, said government forces were only four miles away from the town of Laiza and in a position to occupy the KIA stronghold and headquarters of the Kachin Independence Organisation. “The ceasefire is an artificial ceasefire agreement, until the day they start to shoot again,” Lum Dau told Reuters by telephone. “They talk about peace, but it’s just for show, for the outside world. It’s meaningless.” The ceasefire order comes a day after China rebuked Myanmar over the fighting, which began in June 2011 when a 17-year-old ceasefire fell apart. The conflict has escalated since December, with the military shelling and conducting aerial attacks on the Kachin. China called for a ceasefire in response to an artillery shell that flew over its border on Tuesday. It was the second such incident since late December. China’s response suggested growing impatience in Beijing with the Myanmar government’s campaign against ethnic Kachins. The ceasefire motion was tabled by Daw Dwebu, a Kachin member of parliament, said Thein Nyunt, another lawmaker. Lower house speaker Shwe Mann told parliament it would not discuss the proposal but rather directly seek the decision of the house by vote, Thein Nyunt told Reuters.
Officials battle floods in Jakarta AUTHORITIES in Indonesia were working yesterday to repair a dyke which collapsed amid floods that swamped the capital as the water gradually receded from the main streets of the teeming city. But more monsoon rains were expected over Jakarta later yesterday and overnight, raising the prospect of fresh flooding, said Fadli, an official at the country’s meteorology agency who goes by a single name. Jakarta, a low-lying city on the sea, has long been prone to floods, but their scale has become worse over the last 10 years as infrastructure development has not kept pace with the city’s growth. Other South East Asian cities, in particular Bangkok and Manila, have also proved vulnerable to widespread floods in recent years. Authorities said the death toll had risen to 11, most electrocuted or drowned. Police were searching for at least three other people reported missing in the flooded basement of a building in central Jakarta.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, from the city’s disaster mitigation agency, said electricity supplies had been cut to several areas to prevent electrocutions. “Our focus now is to save more lives,” he said. While life slowly got back to normal in the centre, tens of thousands remained affected by the waters elsewhere in the city of 14 million people. The police and army deployed rubber boats to help evacuate or bring supplies to people, said Jakarta Police spokesman Colonel Rikwanto. Elsewhere, hundreds of soldiers tried to repair a collapsed canal dyke which let floodwater pour into parts of central Jakarta on Thursday after hours of rain caused rivers and canals to burst their banks. At their peak, almost 250,000 people were affected by the floods, which covered about 30 per cent of the city. They were the most widespread to hit the city since 2007, when almost 80 died and more than half of the city was affected.

Obama inspires brother to run for office in Kenya polls U.S. President Barack Obama’s message of hope and change has inspired his half-brother Malik to launch a political career of his own, with his eye on elections in Kenya in March. “If my brother is doing great things for people in the United States, why can’t I do great things for Kenyans here?” Malik Obama told Reuters in the village of Kogelo, President Obama’s ancestral homeland. Malik, 54, is running for governorship of the rural Siaya county as an
independent candidate. His sibling’s message resonates with a Kenyan electorate angry over a political class widely regarded as greedy and corrupt. However, the odds are stacked against lone candidates in a country where ideology is trumped by tribe or clan ties. This is the first time independents have been permitted to run in an election after a constitutional change in 2010. For Obama, the inspiration comes
from elsewhere. “He is an inspiration to me and I feel that he is an embodiment of my father’s dream,” he said of the US leader. “All he told me is ‘brother, it is not an easy thing to get into public office. Just have a thick skin because people will be targeting you. The media will be saying this and that. There will be people who love you and people who won’t love you’.” He said his younger brother has
flourished by following the footsteps of their father, Barack Obama Snr the first African to attend the University of Hawaii before returning home to work in the senior echelons of the Kenyan civil service. “The old and tested way has not really worked for us. Right now we need a bold, radical and fresh approach,” he said. He added his race in the election is motivated by a desire to foster economic development and to answer the call of duty.

UN, Iran fail again to agree on deal
French journalist shot dead in Aleppo
U.N. inspectors and Iran failed again in talks this week to revive an investigation into suspected nuclear arms research by Tehran, a setback for diplomatic efforts to resolve the atomic dispute with the Islamic Republic peacefully. Herman Nackaerts, deputy director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said yesterday after returning from Tehran that his inspectors had not been granted the access they have long sought to a military site. A further round of negotiations was scheduled for February 12, he said, more than a year after the IAEA and Iran held their first in a series of so far largely fruitless meetings. In a separate note sent to the IAEA’s member states about the negotiations over Wednesday and Thursday, the UN agency said “important differences” between the two sides remained. The absence of a breakthrough, which would help allay international suspicions over Iranian nuclear ambitions, will disappoint world powers seeking a broader diplomatic settlement with Iran that would avert the threat of a new Middle East war. The Vienna-based IAEA made its best efforts to find a compromise and “one has to question whether there is any political will in Tehran to reach an agreement or whether they are just trying to buy time,” one Western envoy said. The IAEA’s attempts to resume its long-blocked investigation in Iran are separate from but still related to negotiations between Tehran and six world powers, known as the P5+1, that may resume later this month after a sevenmonth hiatus. The IAEA, whose mandate is to forestall the spread of atomic weapons, has been trying for a year to negotiate a so-called structured approach with Iran giving its inspectors access to sites, officials and documents for their inquiry. The most pressing of the UN agency’s concerns is to inspect the Parchin military complex southeast of Tehran where it believes explosives tests of use in developing nuclear weapons may have been carried out, something Iran denies.
FRENCH war reporter Yves Debay was killed by sniper fire while reporting on the crisis in Syria, a Turkish official said yesterday. The Belgian-born Debay was taken to Turkey, where medical staff pronounced him dead, after being shot once in the head and once in the chest on Thursday, a Turkish official said. “France condemns this odious act and expresses its condolences, its sympathy and its solidarity with the friends and family of Yves Debay,” French President Francois Hollande said in a statement. Syrian anti-government rebels said Debay had been shot in the northern city of Aleppo, a once-thriving commercial hub where two explosions tore through a university earlier this week killing 83 people. Debay had been working for Assaut, a French magazine he founded and which specialised in defence matters. According to French media, Debay was born in 1954 in what was then the Belgian Congo and later took French nationality. A former soldier, he later moved into journalism where he specialised in war reporting. Last year, Syria was the most dangerous country by far for journalists with 28 killed, according to the watchdog Committee to Protect Journalists. Several reporters are also missing in Syria after being abducted during the uprising. Rebels fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad have detained journalists suspected of supporting the government. Pro-Assad militia have also seized journalists. The Syrian government tightly restricts media access.

Foreigners still caught in Sahara hostage crisis By Lamine Chikhi MORE than 20 foreigners were still being held hostage or missing inside a gas plant yesterday after Algerian forces stormed the desert complex to free hundreds of captives taken by Islamist militants, who threatened to attack other energy installations. Thirty hostages, including at least seven Westerners, were killed during Thursday’s assault, along with at least 18 of their captors, said an Algerian security source. The attack, which plunged capitals around the world into crisis mode, is a serious escalation of unrest in northwestern Africa, where French forces have been in Mali since last week fighting an Islamist takeover of Timbuktu and other towns. “We are still dealing with a fluid and dangerous situation where a part of the terrorist threat has been eliminated

A local Algerian source said 100 of 132 foreign hostages had been freed from the facility. The fate of the other 32 was unclear as the situation was changing rapidly. Earlier he said 60 were still missing with some believed still held hostage, but it was unclear how many, and how many might be in hiding elsewhere in the sprawling compound. Two Japanese, two Britons and a French national were among the seven foreigners confirmed dead in the army’s storming, the Algerian security source told Reuters. One

to their captors. As Western leaders clamoured for news, several expressed anger they had not been consulted by the Algerian government about its decision to storm the facility. The sprawling facility housed hundreds of workers. Algeria’s state news agency said the army had rescued 650 hostages in total, 573 of whom were Algerians. “(The army) is still trying to achieve a ‘peaceful outcome’ before neutralising the terrorist group that is holed up in the (facility) and freeing a group of hostages that is still being held,” it said, quoting a security source. Algerian commanders said they moved in on Thursday about 30 hours after the siege began because the gunmen had demanded to be allowed to take their captives abroad. An Irish engineer who survived said he saw four jeeps full of hostages blown up by Algerian troops.

Business Probe of 787 focuses on battery
Wall St unchanged as Intel drags, Morgan Stanley up
U.S. and Japanese aviation safety officials wrapped up their initial investigation of a badly damaged battery from a Boeing 787 Dreamliner jet yesterday, saying further checks would be held in Tokyo and could take a week to complete. Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Boeing joined Japanese authorities looking into what caused warning lights to go off on an All Nippon Airways Co domestic flight earlier this week, prompting the aircraft to make an emergency landing at Takamatsu airport in western Japan. The incident prompted regulators in the United States and around the world to ground the 50 Dreamliners in service. The lightweight, mainly carboncomposite 787 has been plagued by mishaps, with safety concerns centred on its use of lithium-ion batteries, which pack more energy and are faster to recharge but which are potentially more volatile. A Japanese safety official onsite at Takamatsu told reporters yesterday it was possible excessive electricity may have overheated the battery and caused liquid to spill out. Pictures released by investigators of the battery showed a misshapen, burnt-out blue metal box with clear signs of liquid seepage. At a news conference, the Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB) said the charred battery and the systems around it would be sent to Tokyo for more checks. It said there were similarities with an earlier battery fire on a Japan Airlines Co 787 parked at Boston Logan International Airport.
China economic growth beats forecast By Leah Schnurr U.S. stocks opened little changed yesterday, a day after the S&P 500 rose to its highest level in five years, as a weak outlook from Intel offset a fourth-quarter profit at Morgan Stanley. Shares of Intel Corp slumped 6.1 per cent to $21.30 after the tech company forecast quarterly revenue that was below analysts’ estimates and hiked capital spending plans for the year. That was offset somewhat by a 5-per cent gain in shares of Morgan Stanley, which reported a fourth-quarter profit after a year-earlier loss, helped by higher revenue at the bank’s institutional securities business. Its stock jumped 5.3 per cent to $22.84. The earnings season so far has been mixed, but that could change with a barrage of releases scheduled for next week, said Doug Cote, chief market strategist, ING Investment Management in New York. “There were some good reports but the real big bellwether companies are not coming in strong,” said Cote. The Dow Jones industrial average edged up 8.02 points, or 0.06 per cent, at 13,604.04. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index slipped

General Electric reported a better-than-expected rise in earnings yesterday, spurred by robust demand in China and oil-producing countries. Shares were up 2.4 per cent to $21.82.
Despite the gains in Morgan Stanley, financial stocks sagged as Capital One Financial reported disappointing profit. Capital One slumped 7.4 per cent to $57.06, while the KBW bank index slipped 0.4 per cent. The FSA said it has been approached by the BBA to discuss a time limit on people filing complaints about payment protection insurance mis-selling
THE UK’s City watchdog confirmed yesterday that it is in talks with banks about potentially imposing a cut-off point for people to complain about payment protection insurance (PPI) mis-selling. The Financial Services Authority (FSA) said it has been approached by the British Bankers’ Association (BBA) to discuss the potential for a time limit in return for the banking industry funding widespread advertising to raise awareness and ensure people know how to complain. Reports have suggested that the deadline could be as early as May 2014, but a spokeswoman for the FSA said that no time limits have been pencilled in at this stage and discussions are still in their very early stages. The FSA said it would need to be convinced that the proposals are in consumers’ best interests before anything like this were to happen. There will be no changes to its rules without a full public consultation, the FSA said. About £13 billion has been put aside by financial institutions to compensate customers for mis-sold PPI policies and the scale of the scandal continues to spiral beyond expectations. The FSA’s statement said: “Our key priority is to ensure consumers are protected, so the FSA board would need to be convinced that any proposals would be in the interests of consumers.
“We have had initial discussions and are prepared to consider the merits of this and other options. A key consideration will be the potential to get compensation to more consumers, more quickly.” The statement said the FSA will continue to hold discussions with the BBA as well as talking to consumer groups. It said: “No changes to existing FSA, or future Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), rules would take place without a full public consultation.” Condemnation came from consumer groups as speculation mounted over the proposals earlier this week. Martin Lewis, creator of MoneySavingExpert.com, said previously that it would be “immoral” to put a deadline in place as early as next summer. He said: “It’s likely that as few as one in five eligible customers have actually reclaimed. “This money was wrongly taken from people, due to systemic selling and, on some occasions, downright deceit. That went on for over a decade. People should have at least as long as that to get their money back.” Standard statute of limitations rules state that consumers can claim compensation up to six years after the date they were sold a product. But they are also eligible to claim compensation for up to three years after they first became aware that they were mis-sold a policy.

AKEL’s rationale on the property tax bill is very superficial IT SEEMS there cannot be an immovable property tax (IPT) that would satisfy everyone. The second IPT bill, submitted by the government in the space of a couple of months was rejected by the majority of the legislature on Thursday, on the grounds that more time was needed to study its provisions in depth. The bill had been submitted as ‘urgent’, the government hoping to have had it approved before Monday’s meeting of the Euro group, which was why the House plenum was obliged to vote on it on Thursday. The new bill was again based on AKEL’s communist philosophy that the ‘wealthy’ should carry the main burden of the tax, with 78 per cent of property owners – property valued at less than €40,000 at 1980 prices – not having to pay anything. In short 22 per cent of individuals and 51 per cent of businesses would pay the €120 million the government would collect in IPT this year. Half of the tax revenue, €55 million, would be collected from778 companies and 87 individuals who would be taxed 20 per 1000 for properties valued in excess of €1 million at 1980 prices. Having cut wages and benefits of public employees, AKEL felt obliged to tax the ‘haves’, as the unions had been demanding, and illustrate its alleged pro-worker credentials. No time was wasted by the party in making political capital out of the rejection of the bill. Its parliamentary spokesman, Nicos Katsourides, was quick to point out that “in all the years I have been a deputy, whenever an IPT bill came to parliament it ended up being shredded to pieces,” implying that his colleagues were protecting the wealthy. This is how propagandists talk. The truth is there was no issue of the IPT being shredded or shelved. No party was opposed to taxing immovable property, especially as it was part of the memorandum of understanding, but they had every right to study its provisions, examine its effects on the economy and propose amendments. The AKEL rationale that the bill was ‘good’ because it exempted 78 per cent of the population was very superficial. The bill is too complicated and is certain to be subject to countless disputes and appeals, relating to the property valuation that would determine the tax percentage. Perhaps the answer would have been a fixed levy on all properties, as the owners of expensive properties would still pay more. This would be much easier to manage and collect, even though it would not penalise people with highly-priced properties as AKEL would like. Nobody knows whether the political parties will come up with a better proposal in the next week or whether they will wait for the new government to present a new bill in March.

A chicken and egg question in Israel I
SRAELI Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was once seen as a right-wing figure. Now he’s widely considered to be a moderate. But it’s not Netanyahu who has changed; Israel has. His governing coalition will certainly win the largest number of seats in the Knesset (parliament) again in the election on 22 January, but his new government will contain lots of people who make him look very moderate indeed. Consider, for example, Moshe Feiglin, one of the ultra-right-wingers who recently displaced the remaining moderates in internal elections in Netanyahu’s own Likud Party. “You can’t teach a monkey to speak and you can’t teach an Arab to be democratic,” Feiglin told the New York Times recently. “You’re dealing with a culture of thieves and robbers....The Arab destroys everything he touches.” Last October, when Likud merged with its hard-right coalition partner, Yisrael Beitenu (Israel Our Home), it was hailed as Netanyahu’s political masterstroke. Opinion polls predicted that the new alliance would win 47 seats in the new Knesset, compared to the 42 seats they won separately in the last election. But even with Likud-Beitenu’s lurch to the right, it’s still not right-wing enough for many Israeli voters. Just in the past month, a new party that is even farther to the right, Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home), has surged in the polls, and now Netanyahu’s alliance is predicted to drop to only 34 seats, while the upstart party gets 15. And what is Bayit
Comment Gwynne Dyer Yehudi’s leader like? Naftali Bennett is the 40year-old son of American immigrants to Israel, a religiously observant man who made a small fortune in software development before going into politics. And he has no intention of wasting his time “babbling about Israel and the Palestinians.” His solution to the problem is for Israel to annex about 60 per cent of the West Bank, including almost all the land occupied by Jewish settlers, and to rule the rest forever. “There is not going to be a Palestinian state within the tiny land of Israel,” he said in an interview with The Guardian. “It’s just not going to happen. A Palestinian state would be a disaster for the next 200 years.” So in the 40 per cent of the West Bank left to them, in Bennett’s version of the future, 2.5 million Palestinians would live under some kind of “autonomous” authority, permanently supervised by the Israeli intelligence services. Most of the issues being
debated in this Israeli election are domestic questions about the economy and the social welfare net, as in any other country, but there is no doubt that the rise of the right has been fuelled primarily by its hard line on security and territory. What needs to be explained is why so many more Israelis are attracted by those policies nowadays than they were twenty years ago. The founding generation of Zionists in Israel in 1948 were mostly secular and socialist, and most of them voted for the Labour Party, which dominated Israeli politics until the 1980s. But the Israel of 1948 contained only two-thirds of a million Jews. Today’s Israel has six million Jews, and most of them are neither secular nor socialist in their outlook. Nor, in most cases, are they descended from that founding generation. The early post-independence waves of immigrants were mostly “oriental” Jews, primarily refugees from Arab countries, who were religious and conservative in their outlook. They were numerous, and had much higher birth rates than secular Jews. Then, from the 1980s onwards, came the Russians and other post-Soviet Jews, who had
‘About 50 per cent of Israeli Jews now identify themselves as traditional, religious or ultra-Orthodox. Only 15 per cent describe themselves as secular’
no sympathy at all for socialism. Together, they have transformed Israeli politics. About 50 per cent of Israeli Jews now identify themselves as traditional, religious or ultra-Orthodox. Only 15 per cent describe themselves as secular. And both the religious and the post-Soviet Jews are mostly on the right politically – in the case of the ultra-Orthodox, 79 per cent of them, compared to only 17 per cent of secular Jews. The new Israel is capitalist, religious and, in many cases, ultra-nationalist. Did the “peace process” die because Israelis were becoming more right-wing, or did the failure of the peace process push Israelis to the right? That may sound like a chicken-and-egg question, but in fact Israel was already moving right for demographic reasons at least a decade before the peace process began. By now it has traveled a long way in that direction. Together, Netanyahu’s Likud Beitenu alliance and Bennett’s Bayit Yehudi will win around 50 seats in this election, which puts them within easy range of a majority in the 120-seat Knesset. Just bring in a couple of the minor parties (some of which are also quite far over on the right), and they will have a strong right-wing coalition. Netanyahu will still be prime minister, but he will have to bring Naftali Bennet and other hard-right leaders into the cabinet. And then life in the Middle East will get even more interesting than it is already. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries
The silencing of the music in Mali WE ALL have a favourite album. Mine is Talking Timbuktu, the collaboration between the great Malian musician Ali Farka Touré and Ry Cooder. Arguably it’s some of the best guitar playing you’ll ever hear. Ali died in 2006 but his son Vieux carries the sound onward, that curious mix of African soul and heart with a blues base. So it was with utter horror that I heard Lucy Duran, who hosts the BBC programme World Routes and teaches the anthropology of world music at SOAS, say in an emotional comment this week that one of the terrible side effects of the extreme Islamic fundamentalism now invading northern Mali is the silencing of music. Outlawed under Sharia law, all instruments, radioa and CD players have been destroyed, and as Lucy chillingly said, those seen playing guitars were threatened with hav-

ing their fingers cut off. It’s hard to imagine what pain Ali who was Mayor in his home town Niafunke, close to Timbuktu, and championed music as the universal way to unite people, singing in all his country’s languages, would feel. Nor the fact that the extraordinary ‘Festival in the Desert’ the annual gathering of the Toureg, African and International musicians in the Sahara desert beyond Timbuktu has also been banned. This year Oumou Sangaré, another Malian musician, will lead a caravan to a new
location at Oursi in Burkino Faso, for he like many of the other Malian musicians refuses not to sing. Music, he says, embodies the spirit of a free and victorious Africa. He’s right. Africa is music to me, and perhaps no band embodies the spirit of this more than Tinariwen, the Berber – Toureg group who were formed in a refugee camp on the borders of Mali before they were able to return home and have now fled for their lives again. Of course, one can understand why the militant extremists are suspicious of music; it is subversive, it does cross borders, it does unite peoples, and most importantly, in a continent dependent on oral tradition, it tells the tales that might be forgotten. Music is dangerous. Of course, hard-line Islamists believe it corrupts, perhaps, Westerners who made it to the Festival in the Desert
did bring their drink and drugs, or inappropriate dress codes, fundamentalism is always about control. But the music of Africa’s peoples existed long before the religion. Tinariwen have performed with The Rolling Stones and many other notable Western bands. I hope now in Mali’s hours of need that those who have money, those who have influence and those who so often sing of freedom and put their arms around their African colleagues on stage are prepared to stand up and be counted. Ibrahim Ali Farka was the only of his mother’s ten sons to survive past childhood, so they named him ‘Farka’, which means donkey, because of his tenacity and stubbornness. Mali musicians will need all the determination of the donkey in the days ahead if the deserts are to sing again.

Sir Paul writes song for Linda vegetarian.” The advertisement, to be screened from January 28, has been created by a team which has worked on animated projects for The Beatles and Gorillaz and features Linda walking along with her children to a woodland feast. Fans will be scouring the footage for references to Sir Paul. An image of a sheepdog makes several appearances and could be the dog immortalised in his Beatles tune “Martha My Dear”, while one figure bears a resemblance to the Fab Four’s roadie Mal Evans. There is also a musical frog which could be a nod to Sir Paul’s top three hit, “We All Stand Together with The Frog Chorus”. The song which accompanies the “LoveLinda” campaign ad is a re-recorded version of his song “Heart Of The Country”, which appeared on the 1971 album Ram. It went on to be the B-side of his single “The Back Seat Of My Car”. The new version was done during a session with producer Mark Ronson.
Fool proof: DiCaprio lets it all hang out after filming
SIR Paul McCartney has recorded a song to accompany a new TV advert for his late wife Linda’s vegetarian food range. The commercial, to be screened later this month, will also feature an animated version of Linda, who died in 1998. It is thought to be the first time Sir Paul has specifically recorded a tune for an ad, although his songs were made available for licensing to commercials several years ago. The frozen food firm which Linda launched has not advertised on television for 15 years. The advert has been narrated by Sir Paul’s friend, music veteran Elvis Costello, who has been a vegetarian since the early 1980s. He follows in the footsteps of his late father Ross McManus as the voice of an ad - he sang the R White’s theme Secret Lemonade Drinker in the 1970s. Costello said: “Linda always talked well and made it seem that you wouldn’t be joining a secret weird society by being

LEONARDO DiCaprio acts “like a complete idiot” to relax. While the Django Unchained star takes his movies “very seriously”, he likes to unwind after a busy day of filming by meeting up with his friends and just being himself by acting the fool and discussing “absolutely nothing of importance”. He said: “I take what I do very seriously when I’m on the set that’s all I focus on. So my vice is to hang out with my friends, talk about absolutely nothing of importance and act like a complete idiot. “It’s like therapy to just be a complete idiot with my friends.” But Leonardo hasn’t spent time in Los Angeles with his friends for “a year and a half” because of his busy filming schedule - which has seen him shoot Django Unchained, The Great Gatsby and The Wolf of Wall Street - and he is “looking forward” to some home comforts when he has finished his promotional work. He explained: “I love to have friends over, but I haven’t really been home for a year and a half so I don’t even remember the last time I did that. “I’ve just done three movies back-to-back, so I’m looking forward to getting back to my house.” When the 38-year-old star isn’t at home he loves to escape from his busy showbiz lifestyle by diving underwater and “disconnecting from earth”.
Number three’s name close to one suggested by medium KATIE Price has claimed she married her third husband because his name is “close” to one suggested by a clairvoyant. The glamour girl tied the knot with stripper Kieran Hayler in the Caribbean earlier this week, after dating him since last month. In an interview with The Sun, she said she had been told she would tie the knot with a man called “Kevin”. She told the paper: “I saw a medium who told me I’d already met the person I was going to marry. “She also said his name was Kevin.” At the time Price said Hayler had been pursuing her for her phone number. “His name is also close to Kevin so it all became clear. I took a friend with me who made notes during the session with the medium because I wanted to make sure I’d heard everything accurately,” she went on. Hayler, 25, is a part-time stripper who briefly appeared performing at a hen do in BBC1’s EastEnders. He was recently filmed naked in a

Third time lucky Price says she’s following in the footsteps of other glamorous role models hot-tub with the mother of actor Joe Swash for the ITV2 show Fake Reaction. He also works for a building firm. Price, 34, said she did not understand why she was given a “hard time” for her choices after a third marriage. She pointed to Joan Collins, Elizabeth Taylor and Zsa Zsa
Gabor, each of whom has been married several times. “I get stick, but no-one has picked on them for all the marriages they’ve had,” she claimed. Price’s second marriage, to cagefighter Alex Reid, also followed a fairly brief romance, and they were married for less
than a year before parting in early 2011. Their divorce followed last year. Her first marriage, to singer Peter Andre, whom she met while a contestant on I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, lasted four years. She has two children from that relationship and another
son from a fling with footballer Dwight Yorke. The children were not present at the wedding. Price teamed up with Hayler after splitting from previous fiance Argentinian Leandro Penna, announcing the end of their relationship in November. They had dated for much of last year.
Michael J Fox wouldn’t want Taylor Swift to date his son
Serial dater Swift split from Styles earlier this month
MICHAEL J. Fox doesn’t want Taylor Swift to date his son. During the recent Golden Globe Awards, host Tina Fey jokingly warned nominee Taylor to stay away from Michael’s son, Sam, 23, who was serving as Mr Golden Globe and the Good Wife actor agreed he didn’t want Taylor, who is notorious for writing songs about her ex-boyfriends, to romance his son. He told Vulture: “I don’t keep up with it at all. Taylor Swift writes songs about everybody she goes out with, right? What a way to build a career.” However, Michael, 51, admitted if Tay-
lor, 23, wrote a song about his son he would find it easier to remember her. He added: “(If the song was) ‘Sam, You Piece of S**t.’ ... ’(I’d go) Oh that was the girl you brought home!’” Meanwhile, it has been revealed Taylor, who split from One Direction star Harry Styles earlier this month - reportedly begged Jennifer Lawrence to set her up with her 38-year-old Silver Linings Playbook co-star Bradley Cooper at a Golden Globe Awards party but he wasn’t interested. A source said: “Bradley has absolutely no intention of getting together with
Taylor. “First of all, her reputation precedes her. Bradley is very wary of dating someone who is a bit of a serial dater like Taylor. “He thinks she’s far too young for him and wants to date someone his own age, not 16-years younger because he’s ready for something serious. It was a little awkward for Bradley. Jennifer came to him and told him that Taylor was interested in getting together. He had to politely decline, knowing full well that Jennifer and Taylor are friends.

PC titans take notes from tablets to regain customers Zuckerberg stressed that users can only search content that has already been shared with them
Facebook rolls out new tool for search FACEBOOK Inc took the wraps off a new search tool on Tuesday that lets people trawl their network of friends to find everything from restaurants to movie recommendations, an improvement that’s likely to increase competition with review websites like Yelp and potentially even Google Inc. The so-called graph search marks the company’s biggest foray into online search to date, though it displays only information within the walls of the social network rather than links to sites available across the Internet. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s 28-year-old founder and chief executive, introduced the new product at the company’s first major product launch since a rocky initial public offering in May. “Graph search is designed to take a precise query and return to you the answer, not links to other places where you might get the answer,” Zuckerberg told reporters at its Menlo Park, California, headquarters. “What you’ve seen today is a really different product from anything else that’s out there.” Facebook shares, which have climbed 15 per cent since the start of the year, slid 3 per cent on Tuesday to just above $30. The product news fell short of some of the most optimistic predictions, which included speculation that the social network would introduce its own smartphone or an Internet search engine. Dubbed “graph search” because Facebook refers to its growing content, data and membership as the “social graph,” the function will be available at first only as a “beta,” or trial, for just hundreds of thousands of its billion-plus users. It will let users browse mainly photographs, people, places and members’ interests. Zuckerberg stressed that people can only sort through content that has been shared with them, addressing potential privacy concerns.
Laptops with touchscreens that convert to tablets are the strategy By Noel Randewich PERSONAL computer makers, trying to beat back a tablet mania that’s eating into their sales, are making what may be a last-ditch attempt to sway customers by mimicking the competition. Many of the laptops to be unveiled around the world in coming months will be hybrids or “convertibles” - morphing easily between portable tablets and full-powered laptops with a keyboard, industry analysts say. The wave of hybrids comes as Intel Corp and Microsoft Corp, long the twin leaders of the PC industry, prepare to report results this week and next. Wall Street is predicting flat to sluggish quarterly revenue growth for both, underscoring the plight of an industry that has struggled to innovate. In 2013, some are hoping that will change. With the release of Microsoft’s touch-centric, re-imagined Windows 8 platform in October and more powerefficient chips from Intel, PC makers are trying to spark growth by focusing on creating slim laptops with touchscreens that convert to tablets and vice versa. Microsoft, expanding be-
Lenovo is making great sales on the ‘Yoga’ (pictured) - a laptop with a screen that flips back behind its keyboard and the ‘ThinkPad Twist’ whose screen swivels yond its traditional business of selling software, is expected this month to roll out a “Surface Pro” tablet compatible with legacy PC software developed over decades. That’s a major selling point for corporate customers like German business software maker SAP, which plans to buy Surface Pros for employees that want it, said SAP Chief Information Officer Oliver Bussmann. “The hybrid model is very compelling for a lot of users,”
Bussmann told Reuters last week. “The iPad is not replacing the laptop. It’s hard to create content. That’s the niche that Microsoft is going after. The Surface can fill that gap.” Apple’s iPad began chipping away at demand for laptops in 2010, an assault that accelerated with the launch of Amazon.com Inc’s Kindle Fire and other Google Android devices like Samsung Electronics’ Note. With sales of PCs falling last
App rewards kids for doing chores FORGET bribery, intimidation and threats, a new app is designed to encourage children to do chores by turning the tasks into a game and giving them points when it is completed. The app called ChoreMonster, available for iOS devices and on the web, aims to make household chores, such as setting the table, feeding the pets or unloading the dishwasher, fun. “There are usually enough chores in a week to redeem some sort of reward,” said Chris Bergman, the founder and CEO of Cincinnati, Ohio-based company ChoreMonster. The rewards, which are provided by the parents, can range from privileges like sleepovers or a family outing, to video games or a cash allowance. “It’s exactly what you would expect kids would want and also more esoteric rewards,” Bergman explained. Parents assign chores through the app and include
The app helped 21,000 kids complete over 300,000 chores during the eight months it was tested the completion dates along with the number of points the child will earn. They also set rewards, including the number needed to receive them. The child can then log into
their account and review the chores and rewards. “If rewards aren’t enough incentive, the empowerment typically is,” said Bergman. When the task is done, the child marks it in the app and the parent is notified and prompted to verify that it was completed well. After the parent approves the task, the child is awarded the points. The app helped 21,000 children complete more than 300,000 chores during the eight months it was tested before being launched at the end of 2012, according to its makers. Making the bed, picking up toys and books, cleaning the bedroom, feeding pets and dealing with dirty laundry were among the main chores. Top rewards included ice cream, an allowance, movie night, sleepovers and computer time. “What I find really interesting is that a lot of times the reward is just empowering the child to make their own decision,” said Bergman.
year for the first time since 2001, this year may usher in a renaissance in design and innovation from manufacturers who previously focused on reducing costs instead of adding new features to entice consumers. “People used to be able to just show up at the party and do well just because the market was going up,” Lisa Su, a senior vice president at Advanced Micro Devices, which competes against Intel. “It’s harder now. You can’t just
show up at the party. You have to innovate and have something special.” At last week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, devices on display from Intel and others underscored the PC industry’s plan to bet more on convertible laptops. Lenovo’s North America President Gerry Smith told Reuters last week that over the holidays he sold out of the company’s “Yoga”, a laptop with a screen that flips back behind its keyboard, and the “ThinkPad Twist”, another lightweight laptop with a swivelling screen. Intel itself showed off a hybrid prototype laptop dubbed “North Cape”, housed in a thin tablet screen that attaches magnetically to a low-profile keyboard. And Asus showed a hefty 18inch, all-in-one Windows 8 PC that converts to a tablet running Google’s Android operating system. Lenovo and Asus, which have both won positive reviews for their devices in recent months, increased their PC shipments by 14 per cent and 17 per cent respectively last year, according to Gartner. “The number of unique systems that our partners have developed for Windows has almost doubled since launch. That gives an indication of how much innovation is going into the PC market,” Tami Reller, chief financial officer of Microsoft’s Windows unit, told Reuters. To be sure, hybrids with detachable or twistable screens do not yet account for a significant proportion of global PC sales, and consumers still need to be sold on their benefits. Meanwhile, previous attempts by PC makers to reinvigorate the market have had limited success.

The 1915 patent led to the nightscapes of today’s cities
Neon advertising signs In 1915, a U.S. patent was issued to George Claude of Paris titled a “System of Illuminating by Luminescent Tubes” which led to the neon sign. The patent described the techincal details in the construction of a tube well-evacuated of other gases before the addition of one of the rare gases, especially neon. It considered the materials used and size of the electrodes, diameter of the tube, and suitable operating pressure. Tube lengths were discussed, and how it was possible to maintain the light output for an extensive life.

eavi Hillary Clinton leav leavi for how long? g If she were to run for president Clinton would have to come clean about her state of health
Time for a rest - but how long will that last?
Faces tough decision on president factors weigh in her favour repo
I
N A matter of days, Hillary Clinton will leave the State Department behind and become a private citizen for the first time in 34 years. But her next big decision will be a very public one: whether to run for US president in 2016. Many factors would weigh in her favour should she decide to run. She leaves her Secretary of State job as the most popular member of Obama’s Cabinet and the country’s most admired woman - rated far ahead of even first lady Michelle Obama, according to a Gallup poll of Americans. Plus, her party wants her. A Public Policy Polling survey found that 57 per cent of Democrats would like her to run, compared to just 16 per cent for another potential candidate, Vice President Joe Biden.
Her husband, former president Bill Clinton, has made no secret that he would love for her to seek the White House. And yet Secretary Clinton seems to harbour doubts. She is recovering from a blood clot near her brain that befell her at the end of 2012. She will be 69 years old in 2016, a fairly advanced age for a president. She would have to weigh whether she thinks Americans want four more years of Democratic rule in the White House, after President Barack Obama’s eight years conclude in 2017. And she seems to relish the idea of taking some time off, exiting the political stage, at least for a while. Running again would not only expose Clinton to the slings and arrows of political life once more, but also put at risk the
reputation she has built as a loyal, hard-working, hardnosed secretary of state. If she were to fail, part of her legacy would be as a twotime loser, after getting bested in the 2008 Democratic presidential race. Clinton has been a public figure since entering the Arkansas governor’s mansion in 1979 as first lady to Governor Bill Clinton. Since then, she’s been America’s first lady, a US senator from New York, a presidential candidate who lost to Obama, and since 2009, the globetrotting top US diplomat. She’s offered only a few clues as to what could lie in her future, none of them definitive. “I think after 20 years - and it will be 20 years - of being on the high wire of American politics and all of the challenges that come with that,
it would be probably a good idea to just find out how tired I am,” she told a town hall event last year. Will she be going into retirement? “I don’t know that that’s the word I would use, but certainly stepping off the very fast track for a little while,” Clinton told reporters last week when she returned to work after recovering from the blood clot. Associates of Clinton say her position now is that she is not going to run. But they are not sure if this decision is final or whether she will try again to become America’s first woman president. “I don’t think she wants to run,” said a former aide. “But I think after taking a break, after doing something else, I think that could change. You never say never.” Another former staffer, having watched how hard Clinton campaigned in 2008, has doubts about whether she would expose herself to another brutal campaign. Clinton had been the clear frontrunner, but her staff and
organisational woes helped the relatively unknown Obama to beat her. “There’s a time and place for things in life and that last campaign was brutal and she gave it her best shot and she really is exhausted. She may be coming to the recognition that there are other ways to do public service. You can sometimes get more done out of government than in government,” the staffer said on condition of anonymity. As Secretary of State, Clinton has kept a punishing schedule, breaking travel records and visiting 112 countries. After a period of rest, Clinton is likely to start doing some foundation work on behalf of women and children, a priority of hers since her days in Arkansas. Whether this initiative would be part of her husband’s Clinton Foundation or a separate Hillary Clinton foundation is unclear. While some candidates spend four years running for president, a Clinton decision to seek the presidency
could come fairly late in the process, given her popularity within the party and her husband’s lengthy list of potential donors who could help her mount a campaign quickly, Democrats say. But a late announcement of her candidacy could also freeze the 2016 Democratic
After a period of re to start doing some behalf of women and of hers since her nomination battle, dissuading other Democrats from jumping in until Clinton’s plans were clear. Bob Shrum, who was campaign manager for Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry in 2004, said Clinton would have no trouble assembling an A-list campaign staff. “I don’t think the question

Clinton’s time in the public eye as secretary of state has allowed her to shed an image as a politically polarising figure, one who as US first lady railed against a “vast rightwing conspiracy” out to get
her husband and who was responsible for a health care policy debacle. Some conservative Republicans have gone from scorning her to fearing her. If Clinton runs in 2015, “The Republican Party is incapable of competing at that level,” former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich said last month. Clinton has earned plaudits from Democrats and Republicans alike for her handling of US foreign policy. And yet her last months at the State Department have not been without controversy and some issues could return to haunt her during a presidential campaign. The deaths of four Americans killed by Islamic militants last September 11 at the US mission in Benghazi, Libya, occurred under her watch, amid questions about whether they had been provided with adequate security. Among the dead was Ambassador Chris Stevens, the first US ambassador to die in office since 1988. An internal probe absolved
Clinton of any responsibility. She is due to testify on January 23 before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, after postponing her testimony due to illness. The secretary of state’s concussion has raised some questions about her health that would have to be resolved, along with her tendency toward secrecy. Clinton returned from a European tour on December 7 suffering from a stomach virus, forcing her to postpone a Middle East trip. On December 15, the State Department announced she had become dehydrated, fainted and suffered a concussion. But the initial State Department statement did not say exactly what day she sustained the concussion or exactly where she was when it happened. By contrast, when President George W. Bush had a choking episode involving a pretzel in 2002, reporters knew within hours the exact circumstances. Experts believe Clinton, should she run, will have to put out a detailed medical report as proof that she is fit to be commander in chief. “Any candidate of a certain age is going to have lots of questions about their health,” said David Yepsen, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at the University of Southern Illinois. “That’s going to be a hurdle for her to overcome if she’s going to run.”

Looking Ahead Theatre It’s a Dog’s Life Theatre and poetry will join forces next week, in order to support the ARGOS animal shelter. Entrance is free, with all proceeds from the sales of Christina Georgiou’s third poetry book going towards the shelter. The collection, entitled The Eighth Day, speaks of our responsibility towards animals, and the deep ways in which human neglect or abuse might affect them. Illustrated by artist Eleni Christoudi, the poems will be presented by poet Vakis Loizides. Theatro Transcendental’s 45minute production also aims to give a voice to animals by telling the story of a man through the eyes of his dog. A moving and thought-provoking show that urges us to question the foundations of the society in which we reside. The performance will be in Greek with English surtitles. The artists involved have offered their time and resources in an effort to support the stray and unwanted animals of Cyprus. The number of animals requiring help far outnumber the resources the shelters can provide. This one-off event taking place on Wednesday at the CyBC Theatre in Nicosia not only reaches out to its audiences by asking them to offer financial assistance through buying the book, but also to rethink the ways in which we view and treat the animals that share our lives. The Eighth Day & Here’s What I Know about Humans, by Lulu the Dog A presentation of poetry by Christina Georgiou and Theatro Transcendental following the observations of human behaviour from the perspective of a dog. Coming Up Other Events Chocolate: the bitter truth For years some people have advocated that chocolate is bad for us - but could there be more than meets the eye to this tasty treat? When one thinks of chocolate, most of us conjure up the joy it gives us and the sweet melt-in-your-mouth satisfaction we get from this cocoa bean derivative. Once we take a bite into this sumptuous source of pleasure, no one stops to think about where that chocolate comes from and how it touches the lives of those involved in making it.
The first Cypriot to Mount Everest The spectacular beauty of the highest peak on the earth, Mount Everest, will be presented from next week, in an exhibition at Famagusta Gate in the capital. As part of the variety of events organised by the Cyprus Photographic Society, the Board has decided to honour George Andreou who became the first Cypriot to reach the summit of Mount Everest, an impressive feat for this small island country that has made its citizens proud. At the end of March 2012, Andreou embarked on a two-month journey to climb Mount Everest beginning from Kathmandu with an international team of ten people. To capture the journey in images, the mountaineer clicked away at his camera, which in the end resulted in a photography show entitled “George Andreou - Cyprus Everest Expedition 2012”, featuring some 90 photographs and video footage taken with his companion Philip Zannettou. Andreou, deputy head of the Cyprus Mountaineering and Sport Climbing Federation, has been an avid mountain climber for nearly 10 years, having taken part in treks all over the world from New Zealand to Argentina and Russia to Bolivia. Preparing to scale Everest takes a lot of training and prior to his expedition he had to undergo a rigorous training programme, which Most of us aren’t all that concerned with the history or chemistry of chocolate. When it comes down to it, we are content so long as the market shelves remain well stocked. And while most of us probably make our purchasing decisions based on cost or preference, there is another factor to consider: the slavery and torture in West Africa that fuels the worldwide chocolate industry. Does that chocolate still taste good? The truth leaves a bitter taste and this is the subject of a very interesting public event taking place on Tuesday at Miloi Cultural Centre in Nicosia, whereby the Greek version of the book Chocolate Na-
included working with a personal trainer doing strength exercises, endurance and, long-distance stamina training. Hard work that thankfully paid off! The exhibition opens on Monday and will remain open for just six days until January 26. These photographs provide a sense of how Andreou saw the world – the awe felt only when facing the vastness of nature, the strength of the mountains which are at once beautiful and forbidding. Perhaps, the most striking photograph of the show is a depiction of the glorious moment when Andreou hoists the national flag of Cyprus on Mount Everest. Another interesting photograph included among the images at the show is a night view of the Himalayas, with lanterns’ light coming from the tents of the mountaineers sparkling on the snow. Some of the photographs feature the struggles of the mountaineers in an interesting way. One such photograph depicts the mountaineers crossing a dangerous, deep crevice using only a ladder. Meanwhile, the expanse of the Himalayas has been depicted in photos portraying the landscape with its snow-white mountain peaks ‘piercing’ the sky, wreathed by floating white clouds. About two million small producers in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria supply almost two-thirds of the world’s annual crop. Despite the fact that the chocolate business is very lucrative, cocoa farmers and their families are struggling to meet basic needs. She examines issues like child slavery and whether programmes like Fairtrade can produce a genuinely better deal for poor farmers. Apart from the presentation of the book, the purpose of the event on Tuesday is to inform and sensitise the public to the exploitation of villagers - chiefly children. For this purpose, the event will analyse the main points of the book and screen the Dark Side of Chocolate, a 45minute documentary by Miki Mistrati and U. Driving Miss Daisy (Capital, 16.10) Some films get a bad rep; it’s nobody’s fault, it just happens. Maybe there wouldn’t be a backlash if this amiable drama (based on a play) hadn’t won the Best Picture Oscar, or if it hadn’t been released in the same year as Do the Right Thing, a much angrier film about race - but it did and it was, and some people claimed it was offensive. It’s certainly soft-centred, as a rich Jewish matron in the 50s takes on a black chauffeur then gradually bonds with him (in a low-key, unthreatening way) through the vast social changes of the next two decades - but Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman are superb in the lead roles, and it probably did more for inter-racial friendship with the middle-aged white au-
dience (a.k.a. Oscar voters) than any number of angry tracts. Civilised entertainment with a pair of fine performances. Don’t hate it, people! Made in 1989.
Young Adult (Novacinema1, 22.00) Charlize Theron’s performance is ‘brave’ in this edgy comedy, though we end up feeling sorry for her - and she ends up becoming a Better Person - so maybe not so brave. Charlize is first seen lying face-down in bed, presumably in a drunken stupor, her behind twitching slightly; then she runs away, leaving her latest one-night-stand still in the bed, packing a bag and her Pomeranian and heading back to the small town where she grew up. Our heroine - a burned-out fiction
Young Adult
writer specialising in ‘young adult’ novels - wants to rekindle a romance with her high-school sweetheart, even though he (Patrick Wilson) is now happily married; she’s obviously deluded, and you know it’ll end in tears - but then she bonds with a fat disabled nerd (Patton Oswalt) who’s a source of world-weary wisdom, at which point the film loses its edge altogether. Still some funny jokes, like the parents who still keep wedding photos of Charlize and her ex-husband (“It was a failed marriage!” she protests; “Well, the wedding wasn’t a failure. Remember the tiramisu?” counters her mum), and occasional details - like our lonely heroine pretending to text while waiting for her date to arrive in a restaurant - are spot-on. Made in 2011.

LEO July 23 - August 22
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21
It’s an easier day for communications as Mercury speeds into Aquarius. If your social life was busy before, it may be even more so now. Along with invites from friends, you may become involved in community projects and decide to volunteer your time. It’s also possible you may want to rethink your long-term goals to reflect your evolving needs.
You may already be very active socially. As Mercury glides into the air sign of Aquarius, your desire to interact with others can step up. Thankfully this can be for the good. Working as part of a team may help you achieve far more than you can alone. You may decide to take on a business partner. Romance may also be promising. Why not reach out?
Whatever your financial problem was, things seem to be going much better for you. Both Mercury and the Sun move into Aquarius this weekend, encouraging communication - whether you connect with friends or family, or reach out to others on the internet. It’s a good time to share your message with the world, or to promote yourself or your ideas.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21
VIRGO August 23 - September 23
CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20
The Moon in your sign brings an opportunity for a slice of fortune. Dare to ask for what you want, and you may be successful. Yet don’t let anyone rain on your parade. This weekend; career wise strands get even more interesting as Mercury and the Sun encourage you to collect all the information you need to make a good impression.
The intensity associated with a current romantic relationship may gradually be dying down. Although the excitement may lessen, you may feel relieved. The focus shifts to health, work and lifestyle issues. It’s time to set goals, and create a strategy in order to help you stick with them and succeed. Insights you read could be very revealing.
You seem to be on a roll as far as your finances are concerned. Mars has been encouraging you to get financial issues sorted out, and hopefully having done this, you can begin to have some fun with your cash. You may want to set yourself some financial goals too. If there’s something you’re very keen to snaffle - look for bargains, especially online.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21
LIBRA September 24 - October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19
The pressure begins to ease concerning joint finances and shared assets. From today you may feel less burdened, and keen to explore or take on new challenges. The desire to travel, or to study may be even stronger. An online course or class may be just what you need to help your career take off. If you’ve always wanted to be published, go for it.
You’ve had quite a lot to do at home, but thankfully from today the pressure seems to ease. Perhaps you’ve been so well organised you’ve managed to get it all sorted out. This leaves you more time to enjoy life, and this is exactly what the cosmos is encouraging. If you get a chance for a romantic outing with someone swell - perfect!
You may feel you are finally back in control this weekend as Mercury moves into your sign today along with the Sun tomorrow. You may even notice you get an energy boost that makes you happier and more vital. Having had a chance to reflect on your priorities, you may want to go ahead with plans and ideas that are meaningful and give you a feel good factor too.
CANCER June 22 - July 22
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22
PISCES February 20 - March 20
You may be excited about possibilities for making your money work harder, getting a loan or getting the extra credit you need. As the focus shifts to your joint financial zone, you may be on the verge of a positive breakthrough. You may also have ideas about how to invest your money so that it brings you a good return. Forward-thinking is the key.
You may feel more lively and easy-going today. Any feelings of mistrust may start to dissipate. With the focus shifting to home and family matters, you may be keen to invite people around, or keep an open house. You love to have friends and family drop by on a casual basis. From today, you may find that they will visit more often.
Your social life may gradually slow down from today, and you might feel like spending more time doing your own thing, reflecting and meditating. You may still be busy, but you’ll also find that getting space to yourself helps you to get a fresh perspective on what to do next. Today’s Moon may also see you decide to confide in a close confidant.

Sport IN BRIEF New York Knicks ease past McIlroy Woods Pistons in London showdown and miss cut Carmelo returns to scene of Olympic glory By Michael Szabo CARMELO Anthony led the New York Knicks to a 102-87 victory over the Detroit Pistons in London on Thursday night, just five months after he helped Team USA take basketball gold on the same stage at last year’s Olympics. Anthony, the Knicks’ leading scorer and candidate for the league’s Most Valuable Player award this season, recorded 26 points in the sold out London affair, the third regular season NBA game to be played at the city’s O2 Arena. “It felt good out there and the crowd was fantastic,” he told reporters after the game, adding that the experience was reminiscent of the 2012 Olympic Men’s Basketball final, which saw the United States top Spain at the same London venue. Anthony scored 18 points in the opening two quarters of Thursday’s contest to give the New York a 56-41 halftime lead in the designated home game for the Pistons. “The Knicks got off to a great start and we were
Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks’ leading scorer and candidate for the Most Valuable Player award this season, recorded 26 points in the sold out London affair, the third regular season NBA game to be played at the city’s O2 Arena playing catch-up from then on,” Pistons guard Will Bynum said. A mix of foul trouble and poor shooting by the Knicks in the third quarter allowed Detroit to claw back to within four points before New York pulled away for good. Bynum scored 22 points, while team-mates Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond
both notched 11 points and 10 rebounds each. The Knicks (25-13) are ranked second in the NBA’s Eastern Conference behind rivals and defending champions the Miami Heat, while Detroit (14-25) languish in 11th spot and are unlikely to make the playoffs. With strong attendances for basketball at the 2012
London Olympics, the league is keen to build on a growing UK fan base. The NBA played back-toback regular season games in London in March 2011 featuring the Toronto Raptors and the New Jersey Nets, who have since relocated to Brooklyn. Even though Thursday’s contest was officially a home
game for Detroit, vociferous crowd support for New York made the game feel like it was being played in Manhattan’s Madison Square Garden. “We had great, great fans and they received us very well. It felt like a home game for us,” added New York’s Amar’e Stoudemire, who had 17 points on the night.
Armstrong admits to doping
Million of people around the world were glued to their TV sets for the eagerly-anticipated interview with Oprah
(Continued from back page) then paid off the International Cycling Union (UCI) and doping officials to cover up the result. “That story isn’t true. There was no positive test. No paying off of the lab. The UCI did not make that go away. I’m no fan of the UCI,” he said. Armstrong said he thought he had got away with it when he retired for good in 2011 but his downfall was triggered by a two-year federal investigation that was dropped but led to the USADA probe. USADA boss Travis Tygart said Armstrong still had some way to go if he wanted to make amends. “Tonight, Lance Armstrong finally acknowledged that his cycling career was built on a powerful combination of doping and deceit,” Tygart said in a statement. “His admission that he doped throughout his ca-
reer is a small step in the right direction. But if he is sincere in his desire to correct his past mistakes, he will testify under oath about the full extent of his doping activities.” Armstrong has already been banned for life, stripped of all his race wins and dumped by his sponsors but his problems are far from over. “I thought I was out of the woods,” he said. “I just assumed the stories would continue for a long time. We’re sitting here because there was a two-year federal criminal investigation.” On Thursday, hours before the interview went to air, the International Olympic Committee stripped him of the bronze medal he won at the 2000 Games. And as a result of his confession, the Texan now faces the prospect of various legal challenges and orders to repay some of the mil-
lions of dollars he earned from his success. One company, Texasbased SCA Promotions, said it would sue the fallen cyclist if he did not pay back $12 million they paid out for Tour de France wins. “He doesn’t deserve, and is not entitled to, that money,” Jeff Tillotson, a lawyer for SCA Promotions told Reuters. Legal experts said that while Armstrong was unlikely to face criminal exposure, his admission would make it more difficult to defend against civil lawsuits, including a federal whistleblower claim filed by former team mate Floyd Landis. “There are lawyers across the country representing various interests who are recording that interview,” said Matt Orwig, a former federal prosecutor now with the law firm Jones Day. “From a legal perspective, his issues are becoming more difficult, not less.”
TIGER Woods was hit with a controversial twostroke penalty yesterday as he joined world number one Rory McIlroy in missing the halfway cut at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. Despite changing to his old putter in the week he started playing with Nike clubs, McIlroy recorded a second successive 75 to crashed out of an event in which finished as runnerup last year. It later emerged McIlroy’s playing partner Woods was in trouble over an embedded-ball incident on the fifth. The American thought he had dropped just a single shot - one of four bogeys in his first five holes - but was told on the 11th the matter was being investigated. Woods appeared to have finished safely inside the cut mark on one over, but his bogey five was changed to a triple-bogey seven after discussions with European Tour senior referee Andy McFee. “Andy feels the way he feels about it and I broke the rules,” Woods said. At the time he had asked Martin Kaymer, the other member of the star group, to examine the lie in among the ice plants.
Sri Lanka beat Aussies SRI Lanka laboured to a four-wicket victory after right-arm pacer Nuwan Kulasekara destroyed Australia with a fine display of swing bowling in the third one-day international in Brisbane yesterday. Australia’s top and middle order batsmen capitulated before Kulasekara’s inswing while Lasith Malinga (3-22) polished off the tail to bowl out the hosts for 74 in 26.4 overs. The win, though not as convincing as it should have been, puts Sri Lanka 2-1 up in the five-match series. Sydney hosts the fourth one-dayer on Sunday. For Australia, only Mitchell Starc (22 not out) and Xavier Doherty (15) managed double digits, adding 34 runs for the last wicket to take the home side past their lowest ODI total ever. On a day when ball dominated bat and not a single six was hit, the Sri Lankan batsmen had their problems too and wobbled early on in their chase.

Australian Open Radwanska stays hot despite cooling temperatures
Brutal Sharapova causes a total eclipse of Venus
By Greg Stutchbury
Russian sends out warning to sister Serena By Ian Ransom A MERCILESS Maria Sharapova continued her serene progress through the Australian Open draw yesterday, obliterating third round opponent Venus Williams 6-1 6-3 and throwing down the gauntlet to her younger sister Serena. The second seeded Russian cannot meet the tournament favourite until the final, but the 79-minute slaughter filled with bloodcurdling shrieks is sure to provide food for thought for the 15-time grand slam champion. With her two prior opponents left scoreless and humbled, Sharapova appeared set for a third successive ‘double bagel’ when she scorched to a 4-0 lead. Mercifully, for herself and a stunned centre court crowd, 25th-seed Williams held serve to stave off another humiliation. “I was a really determined player out there because I knew the tennis that she’s capable of producing and playing,” Sharapova told reporters of the seven-time grand slam champion. “Despite what she’s ranked or seeded, it doesn’t matter when you go out on the court. She’s been there. She’s experienced enough
Williams is a shadow of her former brilliant self to know no matter if you’re playing the third round, the quarters, or the final, you have to be ready. “I certainly was.” A much-hyped match-up was reduced to a one-sided rout, as Sharapova burned to a 5-1 lead in the second set. Williams sparked raucous cheers by breaking Sharapova’s serve and lifted the roof by holding her own to claw back to 5-3. But Sharapova blasted an ace to seal the match, celebrating the victory with a fist-pumping scream. The crushing loss ampli-
fied Williams’ fall from her halcyon days, and left her stony-faced at her postmatch media conference. “Definitely not my best day today,” said Williams, who has battled Sjogren’s Syndrome, which causes fatigue and joint pain. Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens, who has had compatriot and retired four-time grand slam champion Kim Clijstershelping her behind the scenes, is next to be thrown to the wolves against Sharapova. Lance Armstrong’s confession of doping in a television interview with Oprah Winfrey has caused a ripple among players at the Australian Open and Sharapova weighed in to say it was “sad” for the sport of cycling. “I’m happy that our sport is as clean as it can be and that we’re constantly tested. You know, we give whereabouts of where we are every single day of the year. “Hopefully not on birthdays and Christmas Eve, that would be pretty tough. “Although they did show up on my birthday and I was very disappointed. They did a couple of years ago. I said, ‘unless you bring flowers, I’m okay with it’. “But they came emptyhanded.”

NOVAK Djokovic was forced to scrap for every point against Radek Stepanek at the Australian Open yesterday, but the world number one could not have had more fun in Rod Laver Arena. The Serbian, bidding to become the first man to win three successive Australian Open titles in the professional era, prevailed 6-4 6-3 7-5 in the third-round clash but he and the Czech ensured the match was the best of the tournament so far. “He loves the big stage; you saw how much fun he had. I also had a lot of fun playing,” Djokovic said. “It was a very entertaining match.” Mindful of his 1-7 career record against the Serbian, the 34-year-old Stepanek refused to sit on the baseline and trade shots with Djokovic, approaching the net 67 times to try to cut down the angles and force his opponent to take risks. “He is a very talented player, very skilful. He made a lot of
great first volleys and made me play the extra ball,” Djokovic said. “He was chipping and charging; not a lot of players do this any more, a lot of the players stay on the baseline. “He never gives you the same ball twice. That’s something that makes him a different player from most of the guys.” While Djokovic never really looked like he might lose the match, he had few opportunities to truly dominate and had some luck as well with several net cords going in his favour. An exasperated Stepanek managed to get some respite from the net in a 14-minute first game of the third set when his shot clattered into the cord and dropped over into Djokovic’s side of the court. Djokovic’s forehand lunge went into the net and he then proceeded to vent mock frustration at the net and the Czech, who simply thrust out his chest with arms outstretched and looked to the sky as the crowd burst into applause and laughter.
Stepanek saved six break points in that first game and the match went on serve until Djokovic did enough to snatch the break in the 11th to give him the opportunity to serve out. Not that Stepanek allowed him a cake walk into the fourth round as he saved one match point by scrambling up, down, back, left and right to slam an over-the-shoulder forehand at Djokovic that set up a winning passing shot. The Czech paused and pumped his arms in the air demanding, and receiving, applause. Djokovic, however, had had enough fun by that stage, and he did not waste another opportunity as controlled the rally from the baseline before blasting a forehand that tipped off Stepanek’s racquet to seal the win in two hours 22 minutes. “It was three close sets,” Djokovic said. “Maybe I could have won the third set earlier but credit to him, he always played well when he needed to, so it wasn’t an easy match.”
AGNIESZKA Radwanska smiled, laughed and then dismissed any notions of superstition after she advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open yesterday. The 23-year-old Pole had earlier romped to a 6-3 6-1 victory over Britain’s Heather Watson in the third round, notching her 12th successive victory in 2013. “There is,” she said when asked if 13 was considered an unlucky number in Poland as she looked ahead to her fourth round clash with Serbian 13th seed Ana Ivanovic. “I didn’t say that,” she hastily added with a beaming smile as if to banish any potential misfortune she may have brought upon herself. The world number four, who could also win her 13th career title if she goes on to lift the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Trophy, was also quick to point out that she was ‘not actually’ superstitious. Radwanska, who won the Auckland and Sydney titles before the Australian Open and said earlier she ‘hoped’ she was not in the form of her life, added she could not think of a better run of victories and felt she was building nicely into the tournament. “I think it was a good start,” she said of her pre-Australian Open preparations. “I really had a lot of good matches against top players this year, and I must say I’m really playing good and everything is working. “I just hope I keep going. Of course now is gonna be harder and harder playing against seeded players.” Radwanska had little trouble against the 20-year-old Briton, taking advantage of cooler conditions in Melbourne to continue her redhot start to the year. Temperatures had exceeded 40 Celsius on Thursday but a cool front pushed through early yesterday, bringing rain showers that forced a slight delay to the match as the roof was closed on Hisense Arena. The 23-year-old, who took a medical timeout after the first set to receive treatment for a cut finger, however, was not slowed by the delay and romped to the win in 84 minutes. “I think I was really solid from the beginning, trying to be focused,” she said. “Especially in the beginning of the first set I was really tight, and I think that game when I was serving when it was 2-1 (to Watson), I think it was really important game. “I think then I start to play better, and of course in the second set I was trying to, you know, to start good as well and not to lose my focus.”

Sport Bayern want title for departing Heynckes By Karolos Grohmann
Tuesday’s King’s Cup quarter-final first leg, which Real won 2-0, was overshadowed by allegations of refereeing bias in favour of Jose Mourinho’s side
Real head to hostile Valencia By Iain Rogers STUTTERING Real Madrid can expect a hostile reception when they visit Valencia in La Liga on Sunday after Tuesday’s King’s Cup quarter-final first leg was overshadowed by allegations of refereeing bias in favour of Jose Mourinho’s side. Valencia were furious with what they saw as several erroneous offside calls against captain Roberto Soldado at the Bernabeu, as well as a possible handball by defender Ricardo Carvalho in the penalty area and another by Gonzalo Higuain in the runup to Real’s second goal in their 2-0 victory. They accused Real, who play the return leg at the Mestalla next week, of putting pressure on match officials in the days leading up to the game and pointed to comments by Angel Di Maria at a news
Teams in war of words after King’s Cup clash conference on Monday. The Argentina winger, who may be fined by the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) for his remarks, said Real had suffered “bad decisions” from referees in recent weeks and even hinted that there was some sort of conspiracy against the club. “There have been sendingoffs, yellow cards and things that opponents could have got sent off for but didn’t and then they send one of us off for the slightest thing,” he said. “These things happen but I think that sometimes they are mistakes that are not made by mistake.” Spain striker Soldado, a former Real player, said Real’s tactics had obviously worked and the referee had
“not been up to the task”. “We feel a lot of impotence,” he said on Wednesday. “It’s outrageous because you see that the match officials are scared to hurt the big team and that can’t be allowed to happen,” he added. “In the end though it doesn’t help you to complain because then you’ll get punished on top of everything else.” Real have all but given up hope of retaining their La Liga title after slipping 18 points behind unbeaten leaders Barcelona and seven behind city rivals Atletico Madrid at the halfway stage of the season. Top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, who has netted 16 times this term, missed last weekend’s 0-0 draw at bottom club Osasuna through suspension
and Real looked lost without the Portuguese forward. He will be available again for Sunday night’s game, while the club have also been boosted by the return this week of Brazil fullback Marcelo after a lengthy injury layoff. Barca can open up a 21point lead over Real, the only team to take points off them this term in October’s 2-2 draw at the Nou Camp, and go 14 clear of Atletico, who host Levante on Sunday, with a win at Real Sociedad today. With the team playing so well and almost out of sight of the chasing pack, the main threat to Tito Vilanova’s side may be complacency. Barca’s World Player of the Year Lionel Messi, who has
netted 28 goals in 19 league games this season, said the players were alert to the danger. “We’re very aware that there’s a long way to go yet,” he said in an interview published on FIFA.com this week. “Our La Liga hopes are in our hands thanks to the lead we’ve got and the way we’ve gone about things, but we can’t afford to relax,” added the Argentine. “We know how good Atletico Madrid are, as we’ve played them already and they’re a great side. “And you can never write Real Madrid off because they’ll fight till the end and they’ve clawed back big points deficits on us more than once. “We’re not taking our foot off the gas, though we’re confident we won’t have problems staying on the same track.”
Lazio’s Petkovic confounds critics By Brian Homewood
Vladimir Petkovic’s Lazio side have cut Juventus’ lead at the top of the Serie A table from eight to three points
VLADIMIR Petkovic’s coaching experience had been largely confined to the relatively tame Swiss league before he took charge at Lazio this season and few gave him much hope of success in the cut-throat world of Serie A. Six months later and the scepticism has turned to admiration as the Bosnia-born coach, who found time to do charity work during his earlier coaching years in Switzerland, has led an unexpected Lazio challenge for the title. Second-placed Lazio visit Palermo today having cut Juventus’ lead at the top from eight to three points in the last two rounds of matches. Instead of smirking at his curriculum and speculating on how many weeks he would last in the hot seat, Italian critics are now singing the praises of Petkovic’s motivational skills and his
meticulous attention to detail. “There is a good rapport between us and I think you can tell. I can get a decision right or wrong, but the important thing is to remain humble and united,” Petkovic told reporters. “A house must be built on solid foundations. We have that in defence and our strikers are the first defence. Everyone sacrifices themselves for the team and in that we have found a good balance.” Petkovic, who began his football career as a midfielder with FK Sarajevo, left the Balkans in 1987 and spent the next 24 years in Switzerland, firstly as a player and then as a coach. He coached Bellinzona, the now extinct Malcatone Agno and Lugano, all in the Italian-speaking part of the country, then got his chance with Young Boys, leading them to the runners-up spot in the Swiss Super League. For five of those years, he
spent the daytime working at the local office of the Catholic charity organisation Caritas, before taking charge of training sessions in the evening. He ventured outside Switzerland in 2011 for a spell with Turkey’s Samsunspor, but lasted only a few months. Unbeaten in their last 14 matches in all competitions, Lazio have enjoyed the rub of the green recently with controversial wins over Cagliari and Atalanta in their last two Serie A outings. “In some games were deserved more than we got and in other games less, but it all comes around in the end. Fortune has smiled on us but, above all, we know our strengths,” said Petkovic. Palermo are one from the bottom with only three wins and Gian Piero Gasperini has been told he must take four points from the next six if he is to avoid becoming their second coaching victim of the season.
LEADERS Bayern Munich take on bottom-placed Greuther Fuerth on the league restart today hoping it will mark the beginning of another winning run that will crown the departure of coach Jupp Heynckes with the Bundesliga title. The 67-year-old Heynckes said he would retire in May with Pep Guardiola, the former hugely successful Barcelona coach, taking over from next season in a major coup for the Bavarians announced on Wednesday. “We have to have full understanding for Jupp Heynckes’ decision both as friends of Jupp Heynckes and as a club. We have to accept and respect it,” said Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, after a 70minute talk with the coach. “In a very personal discussion we both agreed we must now - especially now - do everything so that Bayern and Jupp Heynckes have a successful second half to the season and bring the league title to Munich.” It is unlikely the spectacular transfer will deter Bayern from their goal to restore order in the Bundesliga after back-to-back titles for Borussia Dortmund. The Bavarians, nine points clear at the top with Bayer Leverkusen on 33 and champions Dortmund third on 30, have unrivalled firepower, having scored 44 goals for the best offence in the league. Toothless Fuerth have netted four times less for the worst record in the Bundesliga this season. Heynckes, who led Bayern to the Champions League final last season but has so far failed to win any silverware in his third spell at the club, will also have a fit squad to choose from apart from long-term injured Holger Badstuber. Dutch winger Arjen Robben, who missed much of the first half through injuries, has come back fully fit. Second-placed Leverkusen, who finished strong in December with five wins out of six, host fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. Champions League competitors Dortmund, traveling to Werder Bremen, are in equally good spirits since the return of gifted playmaker and crowd favourite Nuri Sahin following unsuccessful spells at Real Madrid and Liverpool. “We are still involved in every competition and that is the important thing,” said keeper Roman Weidenfeller. “We work hard we want to improve and we want success.”

Tottenham seek rare double over league leaders United
APOEL and Omonia ready to resume rivalry
Spurs have chance to end 23 years of woe
By Nemanja Bjedov
By Toby Davis ENGLAND greats Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker were on the scoresheet the last time Tottenham Hotspur recorded a league double over Manchester United, but the north London club have the chance to end 23 years of woe tomorrow. After coming out on top in an end-to-end tussle at Old Trafford in September, Tottenham can reinforce their own Champions League ambitions with a second successive win over the Premier League leaders. That would be a remarkable achievement in itself given they have not won a home fixture against United, who are seven points clear at the top of the table, since 2001, 11 years after they last won both the home and away league matches. It would be an indication of the direction in which the club is heading under Portuguese manager Andre VillasBoas who has begun to win around sceptical supporters after replacing the enormously popular Harry Redknapp in the close season. After a short-lived and underwhelming spell at Chelsea, Villas-Boas was hired to bring modern European thinking to the Tottenham helm where Redknapp’s more traditional methods had led them to a fourthplace finish the previous season. They sold Luka Modric, ar-
Long overdue: Tottenham celebrate a famous 2-1 victory at Old Trafford back in September in a thrilling match guably their most influential player, but Villas-Boas has kept them in top-four contention and was rewarded with the manager of the month award in December. His list of achievements include bringing the best out of Gareth Bale, successfully converting Jermain Defoe into a lone striker and skilfully managing a depleted squad. To complete a league double over United would add another feather to his cap given Redknapp did not manage a single win against the Manchester club in any competition in his four years with the club. Last weekend’s draw with Redknapp’s current club
Queens Park Rangers, however, gave fans reason for concern. A 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at a similar stage last season was the start of a prolonged dip in form that allowed Arsenal to come from 10 points behind to leapfrog them into third place. “It is in everyone’s minds because it has happened before,” said Tottenham’s midfielder Scott Parker. “Maybe what happened in the past will stand us in good stead. I just think we can learn from two years ago and last year and stay strong.” A win would also give Tottenham the opportunity to close the gap on third-placed
Chelsea who have to negotiate a tricky home game against inconsistent Arsenal on Sunday to maintain their own fading title challenge. Chelsea fans are struggling to warm to interim manager Rafa Benitez whose side were held to a shock 2-2 league draw by Southampton on Wednesday to continue the Spaniard’s uphill battle to convince the club’s supporters that he can be trusted. Chelsea, who sit six points behind second-placed Manchester City, take on an Arsenal side capable of being both brilliant and blunt. Languishing in sixth place and 21 points behind the leaders, Arsenal need a win to perk up their own
challenge for a Champions League spot. Liverpool can soothe the wounds inflicted by local rivals Manchester United last weekend with victory at home to Norwich, while Newcastle, who have lost four of their last six league matches, host second-bottom Reading. France striker Loic Remy could make his debut for bottom club Queens Park Rangers at West Ham today after completing his move from Marseille. In the weekend’s other fixtures, Swansea host Stoke, Wigan entertain Sunderland and West Brom face Aston Villa today. Everton travel to Southampton on Monday.
Pochettini replaces sacked Adkins at Southampton
Nigel Adkins had guided the Saints to 15th in the league
SOUTHAMPTON have sacked manager Nigel Adkins and replaced him with former Espanyol boss Mauricio Pochettino. The Saints are 15th in the Barclays Premier League after coming back from 2-0 down to claim a draw with European champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. But that was not enough to save Adkins from the axe, with 40-year-old Argentinian Pochettino taking charge of training today ahead of Monday’s home game with Everton. Saints executive chairman Nicola Cortese said: “This decision has been made with the long-term ambitions of Southampton Football Club in mind. Whilst we acknowledge the contribution Nigel has made during the past two years, for the club to progress and achieve our long-term targets a change was needed. “Mauricio is a well-respected coach of substantial quality who has gained a reputation as an astute tactician and excellent manmanager. I have every confidence that he will inspire our talented squad of players to perform at the highest possible level. “He also shares my belief that the most suc-
cessful clubs are built by nurturing young players through a development system that provides a clear path to the first team, thereby creating a culture that keeps them at the club for the long term. This is an approach he has employed with great success in the past and I look forward to him bringing that experience and expertise to Southampton.” Adkins joined Southampton from Scunthorpe in 2010 and he guided the Saints into the Premier League with back-to-back promotions. They started slowly on their return to the top flight but Adkins departs with the club three points outside the relegation zone after a run of just two defeats from their last 12 league games. Former Southampton captain Matt Le Tissier criticised the decision to axe Adkins. Le Tissier told Sky Sports News: “It doesn’t surprise me. It’s a strange time of the season, they’ve lost two of the last 12 games and came from 2-0 down to draw at Chelsea. But it seems to be the way the club’s being run under the chairman. Nothing’s surprising and it’s a bit of a laughing stock.”
APOEL take on archrivals Omonia in Round 18 of the Cyprus football championship with both sides desperate for a win. APOEL trail leaders Anorthosis by six points, while Omonia find themselves two points behind fourth-placed AEL in the final title playoff spot. “Definitely the pressure we feel increases as the gap between us and Anorthosis widens. We are a team that wants to win the championship and we will fight until the last match of the season to fulfill our goal,” said APOEL coach Ivan Jovanovic. “Maybe after this match the pressure will increase even more or be reduced somewhat, but our target will remain the same. What is important for us is that we aim for a win, so we focus on the match against Omonia and not only on our league position,” he added. Jovanovic will give a late fitness test to Selim Benachour who got injured against Apollon in the last round, while Christos Karipidis and Mario Budimir are close to a return to full fitness. New signing, Danish winger Mikkel Beckmann, is available for selection, but Angolan Francisco Zuela is away on international duty at the African Cup of Nations. Omonia coach Toni Savevski has defender Charalambos Kyriakou available again, but Bruno Aguiar and Danielson are doubtful for the clash which is set to kick off this afternoon at 2.30pm at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. “What is unfortunate for us is that we have three matches in six days,” said Savevski whose side won a midweek Cup encounter against Ethnikos Achnas. “We are now fully focused on the derby against APOEL. We have some problems, but we will try to do our best on the pitch for all the fans who will come to support us,” he concluded. Elsewhere, this afternoon at 5pm, Ethnikos Achnas host Ayia Napa, while an hour later AEK and AEP Paphos take on Nea Salamina and Doxa Katokopia respectively. Tomorrow afternoon at 2.30pm in-form leaders Anorthosis face a tricky Apollon test at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca, while at 5pm Enosis Neon Paralimni host Alki. In the final match of the round with the kick-off scheduled for 7pm at the Tsirion Stadium in Limassol, AEL will be looking to return to winning ways as they host Olympiakos.

Sport Armstrong admits doping in ‘toxic’ tale By Julian Linden LANCE Armstrong has ended years of vehement denial by finally coming clean and admitting he had cheated his way to a record seven Tour de France titles with systematic use of banned, performance-enhancing drugs. Confessing his ‘toxic’ tale to chat show host Oprah Winfrey, Armstrong described himself as a ‘flawed character’ while at last owning up to being at the centre of one of the biggest drugs scandals in world sport. In just one word at the beginning of the interview broadcast worldwide, cancer survivor Armstrong confirmed his place in any gallery of fallen icons who have shamed their sport, the likes of drug-cheat sprinters Ben Johnson and Marion Jones. “Yes,” he replied when asked directly whether he had used performance enhancing drugs. Without flinching, Winfrey rapidly fired questions at him, offering the 41-year-old little respite, grilling him about every aspect of his tainted career. Without hesitation, and showing no signs of emotion, Armstrong replied ‘yes’ to questions about whether he used specific drugs, including erythropoietin, human growth hormone, and blood doping. When asked why he had repeatedly lied about using banned substances until Thursday night’s startling admission, he told Winfrey: “I don’t know I have a great answer. “This is too late, probably for most people, and that’s my fault. I view this situation as one big lie that I repeated a lot of times. “This story is so bad ... so toxic. “It’s not as if I said no and moved off it. While I’ve
lived through this process, I know the truth. The truth isn’t what I said and now it’s gone.” Armstrong inspired millions with what had seemed like a fairytale career, and said he did not believe he could have achieved what he did without breaking the rules due to a culture of drugs in cycling. “Not in that generation. I didn’t invent the culture, but I didn’t try to stop the culture,” he said. “It’s hard to talk about the culture. I don’t want to accuse anyone else. I’m here to acknowledge my mistakes. “I will spend the rest of my life trying to win back trust and apologising to people.” Armstrong said he had never considered himself to be a cheat and had been sure he would get away with it, until out of competition tests were introduced and testing procedures dramatically improved. The last time he cheated was in 2005, he said, when he won his seventh Tour de France on the streets of Paris. He made a comeback in 2009 but said he never used drugs again. “I looked up the definition of a cheat to gain an advantage. I didn’t view it that way. I viewed it as a level playing field,” he said. Armstrong’s admission came just months after the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) released a detailed report describing him as the ringmaster of the “most sophisticated, professionalised and successful doping programme that sport has ever seen.” While he confessed to cheating and bullying, he denied several of the other accusations that have been made against him. He rejected suggestions he failed a doping test at the 2001 Tour of Switzerland TURN TO PAGE 28

CYPRIOT NO MATCH FOR SPANISH IRON MAN AT AUSTRALIAN OPEN Frustration: Marcos Baghdatis went down in straight sets to number four seed David Ferrer on Rod Laver Arena in the showpiece match of the day in Melbourne
Baghdatis battered by formidable Ferrer By Leo Leonidou and Nemanja Bjedov

ARCOS Baghdatis was yesterday beaten in the third round of the Australian Open, the Cypriot going down 6-4 6-2 6-3 to fourth seed David Ferrer in the showpiece night match on Rod Laver Arena. The ultra-consistent Ferrer, who reached at least the quarter-finals of every major tournament he contested last season, was rarely troubled as he downed the 27-year-old Limassol native in the eagerly-awaited encounter. The crowd favourite Cypriot, ranked 35 in the world, came back from two sets down to beat Ferrer at the Australian Open three years ago, which was his only win in four previous career meetings with the Spaniard, but he never looked like repeating the Herculean feat this time. “It was really tough out there, Baghdatis told the Cyprus Mail via Skype after the match. “The court was playing very slow and I couldn’t get him out of his hitting zone. I also struggled to get a lot of free points on
Mr Consistent: David Ferrer was in superb form my serve. “After I lost the opening set I told myself to be more aggressive but he kept closing the door on me. He had a good day and found a way to win.” When asked to rate his overall performance in Melbourne over the course of the week, Baghdatis said he was disappointed as his goal was to get to the second week “Nevertheless I feel that I’m playing well and happy
with my standard and hope this continues. The buildup to the tournament went well and I am targetting a return to the top 20 and then the Top 15. I am not at the very top level at the moment but nothing is impossible.” Ferrer, who will now play Japan’s rising star Kei Nishikori in the fourth round, told the post-match press conference: “I played my best match of the week. To beat Marcos I needed to
play my best tennis and I did.” Ferrer, known as the ‘Iron Man’ of the tour, chased down every ball and frustrated the Cypriot with his amazing length off his groundstrokes which negated Baghdatis’ flamboyant baseline game. Every time the Cypriot tried to alter the pattern of the match by rushing to the net, he was not very effective as Ferrer easily picked him off with some accurate passing shots. Baghdatis’ Australian Open is not yet finished as the Cypriot now resumes his doubles campaign with Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. They face fourth seeds Max Mirnyi of Belarus and Romanian Horia Tecau in the second round, with Baghdatis saying: I’m just going to go out there, give it my best and enjoy it.” SHARAPOVA CAUSES A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF VENUS PAGE 29
