Final messages before big day Debate becomes heated on the topic of the Mari naval base blast By Poly Pantelides

T

HE REMAINING two presidential rivals last night locked horns for the last time before tomorrow’s elections, with the economy and the Mari tragedy taking centre stage during the often heated live television debate. In response to what he perceived as the ‘doom and gloom’ campaigning of DISY leader Nicos Anastasiades against the current government, AKELbacked candidate Stavros Malas played down the situation. “Our country is not clad in black. It is not a scorched earth. Cypriots have known worse, and with a progressive policy I am sure our country can push forward,” Malas said in his opening statement. In his opening statement, Anastasiades called for unity. “Everyone needs to come together so we can face the big, pressing issues at hand,” he said. Unlike the previous two debates where the candidates were sitting in a row, last night they were placed opposite each other giving them more of an opportunity to literally point the finger when the discussion became animated. This time they were also not constrained by time. Anastasiades complained that although Malas’ campaign team accused him of being a ‘yes-man’ for being willing to sign a bailout and slammed him for having ‘connections in Europe’ he said he had never stooped to their level to respond.

Raising his voice to almost shout, Anastasiades said the fact was that it was the same government supporting Malas that had created unemployment and forced people to rely on charity to get by. Trying to get the upper hand Malas dug a hole for himself however. “You say I will bring about another Mari. You are telling me that I will become a murderer through an accident if I am President,” he said referring to the DISY campaign to equate Malas with the current government’s failures. Thirteen people died in the naval base blast and the island’s main power station was crippled. A non-binding report on the political responsibility said President Demetris Christofias was ultimately responsible for the blast, while six state officials are being tried for causing death by want of precaution, and homicide by gross negligence in relation to the 13 deaths. Although Malas later said that the word “murder” was probably too strong, he had opened Pandora’s Box, giving Anastasiades an excuse to keep returning to the matter of Mari during the discussion. When Malas later criticised Anastasiades’ support of a NATO membership saying that it would be akin to “taking our children to war to kill them,” Anastasiades was quick to respond: “There is no need. You kill them in Mari”. “Don’t lose your cool,” Malas said although he

Goodbye Mr Chips as British surnames die out IT’S Goodbye Mr Chips as the British surname is one of tens of thousands that have disappeared over the last 100 years, according to new research. Other surnames such as Clegg, William, Cohen, Kershaw, Sutcliffe, Butterworth and Greenwood are in danger of dying out, the study found. Family history website Ancestry.co.uk compared surnames from the 1901 censuses with those from modern records and found that

many had disappeared, including Chips, Hatman, Rummage, Nithercott, Raynott, Temples, Southwark and Woodbead. William was the 374th most common surname in 1901, but has fallen to 12,500th today, said Ancestry. Many which have vanished were anglicised by their owners, including immigrants who changed name to avoid spelling complications, and WWI also played a part, with towns or villages losing a generation of young men.

Supreme Court censures AG over bailiff comments ‘Inappropriate, out of place, and unfortunate’ By George Psyllides THE Supreme Court yesterday censured the island’s Attorney-general Petros Clarides over comments he made concerning a public attempt to seize a ministerial car for an unpaid state debt. In one of the rare times it has done so, the Supreme Court issued an announcement describing Petros Clerides’ comments as inappropriate, out of place, and unfortunate under the circumstances. The island’s top lawyer responded almost immediately, saying it was the Supreme Court’s announcement that was inappropriate and out of place. The announcement came after bailiffs on Thursday tried to execute a court-issued warrant to seize moveable state property in connection with money owed in a land appropriation case worth €5.0 million. Amid a media circus, the bailiffs tried to seize the commerce minister’s car causing an embarrassing scene for the government. Clerides said there was no reason for such an action – an appeal is pending -- and wondered why

the bailiffs had not gone after property belonging to courts and judges. The Supreme Court said the bailiffs were doing their duty and criticised Clerides. “The tone of the attorneygeneral to the mass media … is considered inappropriate, completely out of place and unfortunate, to say the least,” the Court said. Clerides returned the fire, saying it was “sad for the Supreme Court to issue such announcements.” “I think it should be the opposite,” he told a state broadcaster lunchtime news show by phone. “The court’s announcement is inappropriate, completely out of place and unfortunate.” In its announcement, the Supreme Court also criticised the fact that the attempt to seize the vehicles was done in front of the media. It also listed the events that led to the action. The incident, three days before the presidential election, sparked a war of words between the government and the opposition. Interior Minister Eleni Mavrou claimed that the appropriation in question concerned people who were “very close to the opposition” – a charge

The scene outside the finance ministry on Thursday when bailiffs tried to seize car rejected by DISY leader Nicos Anastasiades. “We have no need of such phenomena to promote our candidacy,” Anastasiades said. “These are phenomena that happened repeatedly in the past year as a result of the state’s inadequacy – its weakness to meet its obligations.” Last October,

bailiffs seized seven state vehicles following another court order issue in connection with money owed for land expropriations. They are expected to be auctioned off at the end of this month. The state owes some €570m to owners of land expropriated for the purposes of im-

plementing public projects, including the Paphos-Polis highway and the Pentakomo Technological Park. In September, 2012, the government decided to revoke land expropriations for public projects deemed superfluous worth a total of €160m. (see editorial page 13)

Company being probed for possible horsemeat products By Peter Stevenson PUBLIC health and veterinary services are taking a close look at the books of an international company based in Paphos and Limassol after a report was received that they had imported horsemeat. According to head of the veterinary services, Giorgos Kyriakides, a complaint was received on Thursday afternoon regarding a company in Paphos which had imported frozen ready-meals, which allegedly contained horsemeat. “We will look closely at the company’s invoices while health services carry out checks on the food labelling and content,” Kyriakides said. “The food that might be contaminated with horsemeat is in precooked meals like lasagne,” he added. Kyriakides revealed local managers of the com-

pany claimed they had no knowledge of any horsemeat imports or foods containing horsemeat. He went on to say that data which was published in The Guardian on Wednesday was false. The paper quoted Eurostat, claiming a total of 291,800 kilos of equine meat arrived in Cyprus in 2012 from Belgium, France, Spain and Greece. “The information Eurostat has received was wrong,” he said. “Through an investigation we have confirmed that a total of 132 kilos of horsemeat was imported in 2012 by a restaurant,” he added. “It is most likely high quality meat, costing €15 a kilo and not just mixed in with processed beef,” he continued. “We are trying to find who imported it as it was not declared to the authorities, probably resulting in a fine for the company once they are located,” he concluded. Acting director for public health services, Christos Christou revealed that officials from the

health services were currently in Paphos and Limassol taking an inventory of all of the products said to contain beef. “The local manager of the company has agreed to withdraw all of those products, despite their being no proof, until an investigation has been carried out to ascertain whether they contain horsemeat or not,” he said. Christou added that the heads of the company in England, Ireland and France had been contacted and asked to provide documentation from the factories where the meals were made to prove that horsemeat was not used in the production process. “Unfortunately the health services cannot take samples to check for ourselves and we are dependent on third parties to give us evidence,” Christou explained. “Once we find out the results of the investigations we will proceed accordingly,” he concluded.

Former police officer pleads not guilty to wife’s murder FORMER policeman, 62year-old Nikos Iordanous yesterday pleaded not guilty to the charge of the premeditated murder of his 56-yearold wife Stavroula Iordanous on December 10, 2012. The hearing for the case was set for May 23 by the Criminal Court which convened yesterday in Larnaca. Iordanous is accused of shooting his wife with a shotgun in the apartment in Aradippou where they lived. According to reports, before the start of proceedings, as Iordanous entered the courtroom he was attacked by members of the victim’s family. Police were forced to remove him from the room for a short period. As Iordanous pleaded not guilty, one of his wife’s relatives shouted out ‘liar’. This forced the Judge, Pambos Poyadji to demand order in the court. Iordanous was later verbally abused by the victim’s sister on exiting the courtroom as he was escorted out by police. He will be kept in custody until the hearing on May 23. Stavroula Iordanous was found dead in their apartment on the evening of December 10. Neighbours had heard a single shot and called the police. She was found lying dead on a couch, with a gunshot wound to the head; a shotgun was found next to her body. Police had said her husband was in shock at the time, claiming his wife had shot herself. During questioning the next day, police said they found inconsistencies in his account and deemed him prime suspect. Police said the crime scene and in particular the positioning of the gun did not point to suicide. The couple were also said to have had “differences,” according to the police.

The final messages before the big day Malas tried to avoid dishing out blame for Mari tragedy

Ballot boxes being picked up in Nicosia yesterday ahead of tomorrow’s poll

(Christos Theodorides)

‘We must end the uncertainty and give Cyprus back its credibility’ By George Psyllides SUNDAY’s presidential election will be the most critical in the history of Cyprus, DISY leader Nicos Anastasiades said yesterday, as he urged people to rid the country of the AKEL administration that brought the island to the brink of bankruptcy. “Cyprus cannot take another five years of (incumbent President Demetris) Christofias policy from politicians who served and defend it,” Anastasiades said. The presidential frontrunner urged people to participate in tomorrow’s poll to usher in a much-needed new era. “We must put an end to the uncertainty and insecurity and give Cyprus back its lost international credibility and

standing in Europe,” Anastasiades said. “(We must) restore our lost dignity and pride with the broadest possible consensus.” Anastasiades said the choices facing Cypriots were the continuation of a policy that brought Cyprus to the brink of bankruptcy, made 50,000 unemployed, and led thousands of small and medium businesses to shut down. “With thousands of households living below the poverty line and vulnerable groups of the population suffering misery and humiliation because of the cuts in allowances,” Anastasiades said. The other choice was to usher in a new era and turn the country into a modern state that would take care of its people. “An effective state that will create opportunities

for growth so that the new generation feels secure and vulnerable groups feel protected by a real social state,” the DISY chief said. Anastasiades is tipped as the favourite to win tomorrow’s runoff vote after garnering 45.46 per cent of the vote in the first round last Sunday against 26.91 per cent of his opponent, AKELbacked Stavros Malas. Malas yesterday continued to court the people who voted for Giorgos Lillikas, who came in third with 25 per cent of the vote. Malas promised to give those who voted for Lillikas a significant role and position if elected. “Because we are united by basic principles, basic objectives, away from party pledges and plans,” he said. “Most of all, however, we are united by the concern and love for the country and its people.” Malas reiterated his pledge for a coalition government if elected, adding that he needed the votes of those who

supported Lillikas in the first round. “It is a given that I will propose to this section political powers, participation in the national coalition government,” he said. Socialists EDEK, which backed Lillikas in the first round, has already decided to sit on the fence in the runoff. Lillikas, who was now trying to capitalise from his strong showing, reiterated yesterday that he would not support either candidate. “I will not give a vote of confidence to anyone,” he said. Lillikas, who had refused to meet either of the other candidates seeking to recruit his support, was critical of both camps for agreeing to bailout conditions he said could compromise Cypriot sovereignty. He said he had deep differences with both. “I do not believe in artificial convergences of positions which cannot really be reconciled,” he said.

(continued from front page) tried to respond in kind by referring to the 1974 coup d’état, a time of strife and killings that led to the Turkish invasion and the loss of lives and missing persons before and after. Malas tried to avoid saying who was responsible for Mari. “Are we here to set up people’s courts?” he said and biting when Anastasiades tried to intervene told him again not to lose his cool. When Anastasiades hit back with a sarcastic remark at his “professor” tone, Malas told him, “you are arrogant”. But it was the subject of the economy that the debate started with. Cyprus needs a bailout almost as big as its GDP: €17.5 billion, €7.5 billion for its budget and €10 billion for its banks. Even after a series of wage freezes and pay cuts last year, state coffers have enough funds to last until April, while Cyprus faces a €1.4 billion debt repayment in June. Anastasiades was asked yesterday to expound on an interview he had given to Reuters news agency stating that he has been in touch with governments and funds to ensure Cyprus had enough cash until it can secure an international bailout. “This would be in order to complete the (bailout) loan agreement with some comfort, without the threat or the fear of collapse,” Anastasiades told Reuters. “That means not to be under the pressure of a deadline,” he added. Pushed to give specifics during the debate, Anastasiades said one country was an EU member state and another was from outside the bloc. Malas tried to argue there was no need for a comparable Plan-B of sorts as preparations and negotiations were already underway to sign a bailout agreement. “The debt is viable. The extreme scenario is a projection over the next 3-4 years if nothing changes,”

Malas said. He said that Cyprus was not bound to borrow €10 billion for the banks, as per the worst-case scenario by PIMCO, the firm that conducted a due diligence on bank portfolios. That figure may result in the island’s debt being considered unsustainable, leading to additional measures such as privatisations according to the terms of the memorandum agreed with the island’s international lenders. “We do not have time to redo formulas,” Malas said arguing that Cyprus could borrow a sum based on a baseline scenario and then borrow more if necessary at a later stage. “I was very surprised by Malas when he said there was no time to negotiate,” Anastasiades said wryly. “Our debt may not be viable which will lead to privatisations. I thought you were against privatisations,” Anastasiades said. Malas’ idea was hotly dismissed by journalists, and by Anastasiades who said that Cyprus would be signing a bailout based on the adverse scenario. “We are implementing (a bailout) without signing a bailout. That’s the tragedy,” Anastasiades said. By getting a short-term loan we can negotiate a bailout to ensure the state debt is sustainable “so we can avoid privatisations,” Anastasiades said trying to allay a running criticism by Malas’ campaign team that the DISY boss would be all too willing to privatise state assets. Eventually, Malas tried to push the discussion onwards. “We have completely confounded people. We are talking numbers… is that the essence?” Malas said. The debate was the two rivals’ last chance to electioneer before a moratorium on campaigning as of midnight last night. Journalists posed only two questions on the Cyprus problem right at the end of the debate.

Home Brussels doubles Cyprus’ recession forecast THE EUROPEAN Commission yesterday slashed its economic outlook for cashstarved Cyprus, doubling its recession forecast for the cash-starved island. The island will see its €17.9 billion economy contract by 3.5 per cent this year, the Commission said in its winter economic forecast. The previous autumn forecast released in November had output contracting by 1.7 per cent in 2013. “Risks remain important and tilted to the downside,” the Commission said. Conclusion of an adjustment programme would be of “paramount importance” in stabilising Cyprus’ economy, it added. The economy was expected to contract by a further 1.3 per cent in 2014. “Projections of the economic outlook for 2013 and 2014 point to a prolonged recession, due to further declines in domestic demand and investment activity,” the Commission said. The report said the effects of much-needed consolidation measures, coupled with increasing unemployment, were likely to weigh strongly on household disposable income.

NEGATIVE “On the back of banks deleveraging and the deceleration of credit growth, gross fixed capital formation is expected to decline further, with the growth rates of the construction activity remaining negative over the forecast horizon,” the Commission said. Unemployment was set to worsen further in coming years to 13.7 per cent in 2013, and to 14.2 per cent in 2014. The government deficit improved slightly despite the sizeable consolidation implemented in 2012, the Commission said. Revenues stagnated due to less tax-rich growth, lower corporate profitability and deteriorating labour market conditions while expenditure reduction was lower than expected, in particular due to the increased number of early retirements and growing unemployment. In both 2013 and 2014, the deficit and structural deficit is set to decrease gradually thanks to the adopted consolidation measures. Conclusion of an adjustment programme would be of “paramount importance” in stabilising Cyprus’ economy, it added. Out of pocket and shut out of markets since mid-2011, Cyprus has been increasingly relying on short-term expensive borrowing from domestic institutions until aid is released. “The conclusion of a macro-economic adjustment programme would be of paramount importance in stabilising the economy, but risks would remain on both the external environment and the domestic front,” the Commission said.

Talks to secure bridge loan DISY leader has been in touch with governments By Michele Kambas and Deepa Babington THE FRONTRUNNER in Cyprus’ presidential election runoff said he has been in touch with governments and unspecified funds for a bridge loan to ensure the island does not run out of cash before it secures an international bailout. DISY leader Nicos Anastasiades, who polled over 45 per cent in last Sunday’s first voting round and is the favourite to win tomorrow’s runoff, told Reuters various parties, including “governments and funds” which he did not identify, had been “sounded out” for a short-term loan. The “one or two month” loan would not supplant a bailout for which Cyprus is in talks with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, he said. “This would be in order to complete the (bailout) loan agreement with some comfort, without the threat or the fear of collapse,” Anastasiades told Reuters at his party offices. “That means not to be under the dilemma of a deadline,” he added. The 66-year-old lawyer declined to say whom he had contacted. It was the first time a presidential candidate in Cyprus has disclosed talks to secure a loan ahead of a bailout rescue - talks which have dragged on for eight months. “We would want a very short period to study the (bailout) terms, to see how we could avoid distortions without dealing with the pressure

Anastasiades says the idea is to complete the (bailout) loan agreement with some comfort of the state going bankrupt,” said Anastasiades, who faces AKEL-backed leftist rival Stavros Malas tomorrow. Malas lags Anastasiades by 18 points in opinion polls. A Socialist party that endorsed a third candidate in the first round has not backed either candidate, boosting hopes for the conservative chief known for his no-nonsense manner. With Cyprus shut out of financial markets for almost two years, its outgoing leftist government has relied on short term and costly financing for months to meet its day-to-day needs. Investors are closely watching bailout discussions amid fears continued delays in clinching a deal could hurt confidence in the eurozone just as fears of a Greek exit fade. Cyprus’ attempts to secure international aid have been bedevilled by concerns that the island is unlikely to

be able to pay back a loan that dwarfs the size of its economy. Anastasiades said recently speculated options to make debt manageable - from a sovereign debt writedown to imposing losses on depositors - were out of the question. “Not only do I completely rule it out, I would consider

it a devastating disaster to the economy,” he said in a book-lined office, adorned by photos of his daughters and grandchildren. “That would be a punitive measure, not a measure to save (Cyprus).” Cyprus has already slapped pay cuts on an inflated public sector and tax hikes in antici-

pation of a bailout. Anastasiades said he did not favour conditions which were overly harsh. “Our intention is to faithfully meet a loan agreement which will not provoke upheaval, or (include) unfair conditions from a negotiation made in haste under the pressure of time,” he said.

LOCAL SCHOOLS RAISE MONEY AT CHRISTINGLE

THE CYPRUS Enterprise Link (CEL), a private organisation connecting and supporting entrepreneurial talent, is featuring a pink edition on empowering women in entrepreneurship. Five Cypriot entrepreneurs, “five dynamic, yet diverse, female Cypriot game changers,” will offer their insights in the inaugural event for the CEL’s pink edition series, a news release said. The event aims to encourage discussion “about the opportunities available for women interested in entrepreneurship, as well as the challenges of such a choice,” the statement said. The guest-speakers are Stavriana Kofteros, CEO of the university of Cyprus’ Diogenes Business Incubator; Paola Papacosta who founded Cypriot and Proud; the co-founder of Cocoon Creations, Elena Strouthou; Top Kinisis’ vice president, Elena Tanou; and Marina Theodotou who founded Curveball strategy consulting The annual Christingle Service at St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral has raised €270 for Anemoni - the Cyprus Association for Cerebral Palsy & Handicapped Children. The service took place on Sunday February 3, and included performances by junior soloist Constantinos Kontozis of the American International School in Cyprus, the English School Choir and the Junior School Minim Choir. Playing to a packed Cathe-

dral, the audience was treated to a mix of Russian, Bosnian, African American folk and traditional music as well as an organ improvisation. Held close to Candlemas, Christingle means ‘Christ-light’ and each child carries an orange representing the world, decorated with a candle representing Jesus as the light of the world. ‘Civil partnerships will erode society’ Group says draft bill was not the result of social dialogue By Poly Pantelides INTRODUCING civil partnerships will create social problems and encourage the breakdown of marriages, the Association for Confronting Social Problems (SAKOP) has said, criticising the Cabinet’s recent draft bill which they say was not the result of social dialogue. The Cabinet recently passed a draft bill to enable couples to have a legally recognised relationship outside of marriage. A civil partnership allows a couple, living together but not married, to register their relationship with authorities so they can have the same obligations and rights as married couples. SAKOP said that “without a doubt” many social problems would be created because there was no procedure holding the partnership together, “just as in the case of religious or civil marriage where the process of divorce is in place”. The organisation said the actual process of divorce

Empowering women in entrepreneurship

could often save a marriage and prevent psychological and social problems because there were mechanisms in place to prevent a break-up and enable couples to have a “smooth cohabitation”. “(With civil partnership) there will be a constant change of partners with many consequences,” SAKOP said, adding that it would lead to an increase in break-ups and problems. SAKOP did not cite any research justifying these claims though they also said that partnerships would encourage married couples to “destroy their marriage and repetitively change partners”. Married couples may or may not divorce for reasons that are not related to civil partnerships, said sociologist and psychologist Antonis Raftis. He added that some of the couples who visit him in his office already legally regulate their relationship even outside of marriage, e.g. by signing a contract on mutual property. “I don’t think a civil partnership will encourage couples to divorce any more

than they do now. If there is an increase in divorces we should look (for the reasons) elsewhere” Raftis said. The rate of divorce has risen to 307 per 1,000 marriages in 2011, from 42 per 1,000 in 1980, according to statistical services’ 2010-2011 demographic report. And couples in Cyprus are increasingly choosing to have children without getting married. A total of 16.9 per cent of all births are out of wedlock, one of the lowest proportions of extra-marital births in Europe but already an increase since 2009 when 11.7 per cent of births in Cyprus were out of wedlock. Raftis said the institution of marriage was enduring and people did not divorce lightly when they have children to consider, but he added: “It is better to divorce than to stay in a dead marriage”. There can be social and psychological problems associated with divorce but children are also vulnerable to insecurity from experiencing a marriage that has effectively broken down and where partners may have

extra-marital relationships, he said. SAKOP said that under the new rules, “straight and gay couples will be able to live together and if, and when they decide to break up their cohabitation they will not need to undergo divorce, they will simply say “hello, the partnership is off” and each will go their way”. However, it is not clear how easy or difficult it will be for couples to annul a civil partnership in Cyprus if and when a law is passed. The European Commission says on its website that “differences between EU countries in this field are huge, in terms of not only the possibilities they offer but also (in terms of) the extent to which partnerships contracted abroad are recognised (if at all).” In the UK, the government advises couples that the court forms used to annul a civil partnership are the same as in the case of annulling a marriage. The legal services are due to process and approve the draft bill before parliament starts discussing it.

Paphos takes part in wedding exhibition LOCAL officials join forces to represent Paphos at a three day wedding exhibition which will take place in the UK next week. The Paphos regional board of tourism, the municipalities of the district, hoteliers and wedding coordinators will attend the successful annual event and will all be housed at one dedicated stand, which has been created specifically for the event. Paphos is already one of the most popular wedding destinations in the Mediterranean with thousands of weddings being conducted at the seaside town every year. This practice brings in much needed and sizeable revenues for the municipalities. Tourism officials hope to raise the districts profile further at the show, boosting both numbers and the coffers. According to the Paphos regional board of tourism, printed and electronic promotional material showing off the best of the Paphos district will be distributed at the event. Local tourism officials say a plan of action for the coming year includes participation in other specialised weddings’ exhibitions, hosting journalists from various magazines dedicated to weddings and offering hospitality to specialist tour operatorswhich coordinate marriages from abroad. In addition, a number of presentations and workshops to highlight Paphos to various existing and new partners both in and outside of Cyprus is due to be announced. All of theses actions are hoped to elevate Paphos’ standing on the wedding stage still further, developing this form of tourism and boosting the local economy. The national wedding show will be held at Birmingham NEC from1-3 March.

No end to rising number of poor Hot meals now being offered to 400 people as local restaurants help out By Bejay Browne OVER 400 plates of hot food donated by local restaurants were handed out to families in Paphos on Thursday. The initiative was organised by a local priest Father Stylianos Sofokleous, who is also trying to establish a soup kitchen for the district, in conjunction with a group of local volunteers who have now officially registered as a charity with the name ‘Solidarity’. Pavlina Patsalou who heads up the group along with Paphos councillor George Sofokleous, have been feeding hundreds of Paphos families for the last 18 months. They started with 20 families, which grew to 250 and now numbers are in excess of 400. Patsalou said the priest approached the group with the offer of help. “We have now moved our operation to a three bedroom house close to my shop, which has been donated by my landlord. We are offering the food support

out of these premises and on Thursday, for the first time Father Stylianou offered 400 plates of hot food,” she said. Ongoing fundraising events are raising money, food and clothes to help the families who are not officially entitled to assistance as they fall outside municipal boundaries. The appeal has also brought forward a medical doctor, Dr Dorel Dimcea, who is now offering his services free to the genuinely needy. A coffee morning held at Tommy Tuckers restaurant in Paphos last weekend raised €424 as well as clothes, food and blankets. Local website designer Phillipa Demitriades has offered her services free and is now in the process of setting up an official dedicated website. In addition, Justin Devonshire and Jason Smith of Bodyshape Fitness will be hosting charity fitness workouts to raise funds every Saturday morning. The first ‘Bodyshape Giving Programme’ will be held today at 9am at the pairs’ studiofound above Famous Sports shop near the general hospi-

tal roundabout. Devonshire said: “To take part in the workout, we’re asking people to donate food, blankets, unwanted clothes and toys.” Paul Clarke aka Cycling Cyprus, will ride on static bikes outside Kolios butchery and delicatessen in Paphos at 9am today to encourage shoppers to donate food. Another upcoming event has been organised by volunteer Ali Fudge- called ‘Together we can’, which will take place at DT’s bar on the Tomb of the Kings road on Saturday March 2nd 4-8pm. Live DJ, happy hour, raffle and more. For more info contact Ali Fudge- 99377321. Patsalou said the group was also concerned that one of Paphos’ main supermarkets was about to close and would mean many more in need of urgent help. “There just isn’t enough money to go around from the government services, so people are turning to us in desperation,” she said. “We have just had another ten families ask us for help… all of them were Cypriot. It’s very worrying”.

Closed-door trial begins in rape of Palestinian boy in Larnaca THE CRIMINAL Court convened behind closed doors yesterday in Larnaca for the trial of the 37-year-old man from Livadhia who is accused of raping a 10-year-old Palestinian boy last year. The 37-year-old Greek Cypriot has pleaded not guilty. Yesterday, police officers submitted evidence to the court relating to the case. The 10-year-old boy had been playing with a friend of his in a parking lot behind Larnaca police headquarters near Phinikoudes on August 1, 2012 when he was approached by a man on a motorcycle. The man allegedly suggested to the boy to take him for a ride on his motorcycle so he could see his dog. The boy got on the motorcycle but the man took him to the roof of a block of flats half a kilometre away instead, where

he allegedly raped and abandoned him. The boy then walked to the police station along the Phinikoudes promenade to report what had happened. He was taken to Makarios children’s hospital in a state of shock, where a state pathologist said there was evidence he was raped. The defendant had been free on bail at the time awaiting trial for trying to sexually abuse two other boys. He had also been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in 1994 for abducting and raping a Chinese woman. A different man was arrested for the boy’s rape in August but was let go when the child was taken to the police station where he recognisde his alleged attacker. The 37-year-old had been reporting to the police station as part of his bail conditions.

Man injured after Molotov cocktail thrown at his house A 21-YEAR-OLD Egyptian man was yesterday recovering in Limassol General Hospital, suffering from first and second degree burns, after Molotov cocktails were thrown at the house he lives in. The home-made explosives were thrown at the house where the young man lives with seven other Egyptians, in Trachoni. According to a police spokesman, one of the devices smashed a window, setting fire to the bed the 21-year-old was sleeping in. Damage was also caused to the outside of the house. “Police are looking at all possibilities...,” Limassol CID chief, Yiannis Soteriades said. The Egyptians reportedly work as fruit collectors in the Trachoni and Fassouri areas for a local businessman, and are legally in Cyprus. Episkopi police are looking into the incident.

Catering giant withdraws beef meals from UK sites Move follows horse DNA find in frozen product A CATERING giant that supplies food to schools, care homes and the armed forces has withdrawn beef from its UK sites after a frozen product tested positive for horse DNA. Sodexo, which provides services at 2,300 outlets according to its website, said the situation was “totally unacceptable” and the products were being recalled “with immediate effect”. In a statement, the firm said: “Sodexo has had a proactive programme in place to ensure that there is no horsemeat in its supply chain. “We demanded written assurances from across our supply chain that the products we purchase did not contain horsemeat, and additionally implemented an internal sampling programme. “Despite repeated guarantees from our suppliers,

Earlier yesterday, Birds Eye said it was withdrawing three beef ready meals from sale in the United Kingdom and Ireland our sampling has identified a frozen beef product which tested positive for equine DNA. This situation is totally unacceptable. “We felt the only appropriate response was to

withdraw not only this product but all frozen beef products. We will only readmit into our catering operations products that have affirmatively passed DNA testing, pursuant to

laboratory test criteria.” The company has launched an investigation into how beef products were contaminated with horse. Sodexo said its Tillery Valley Foods business,

which supplies meals to the healthcare sector, was not affected. It is the latest company to announce that its products have tested positive for equine DNA. Earlier yesterday, Birds Eye said it was withdrawing three beef-ready meals from sale in the UK and Ireland. The move follows tests that found 2 per cent of horse DNA in a chilli con carne dish sold by Birds Eye in Belgium. Birds Eye’s spaghetti bolognese, shepherd’s pie and lasagne are made by the same Belgian manufacturer, Frigilunch N.V., and are being withdrawn “as a precautionary measure”. The Food Standards Agency released the latest tranche of test results submitted by the food industry. They showed that out of 1,133 meat products checked, only six - including Sodexo’s - were positive for horse. In the second wave of tests, the products linked to samples showing horse DNA were Asda’s chilled beef bolognese sauce, Sodexo’s beef burgers, minced beef and halal minced beef, and a Whitbread Group lasagne and beef burger.

Outcome of Italy elections unclear

EUROPE TODAY Torrential rain hits Athens

Experts say Senate race too close to predict

TORRENTIAL rainfall has caused extensive flooding in Greece’s capital swamping basements and forcing authorities to close major roads and a central subway station in Athens. A young woman who had been trapped in her car on a flooded suburban road died shortly after being pulled out by motorists and taken to a hospital, police said. The cause of her death was not immediately clear. The fire department said it received more than 900 calls to pump out water in the greater Athens region. Up to 60 millimetres (2.3 inches) of rain fell in a few hours, more than the monthly average of 50 mls (1.9 in). An abandoned house collapsed in the city centre, but no injuries were reported.

Italian marines home for vote INDIA’S Supreme Court yesterday allowed two Italian marines charged with the murder of two fishermen off the coast of India to return home to vote in a parliamentary election this weekend. The sailors, members of a military security team protecting a cargo ship from pirate attacks, are accused of shooting the fishermen they say they mistook for pirates off the southern state of Kerala in February 2012, sparking a diplomatic row between New Delhi and Rome.

France ready for Mali pull out FRANCE is still ready to start pulling its forces out of Mali next month, despite Thursday’s rebel attack on the key town of Gao, the French commander of the defence staff said yesterday. But yet, I don’t see any reason not to begin some drawdown.”

Ukrainian leader in TV bid to woo public UKRAINIAN President Viktor Yanukovich pledged yesterday to keep down the price of gas in the home, using a fourhour, televised question-andanswer session to counter an image of being out of touch with his people. Yanukovich, expected to seek a second term in power in 2015, made a series of promises - to fix bad roads, improve grim conditions in industrialised eastern areas, build new sports facilities and improve social benefits like medical insurance. “For me, all citizen people are equal - those who voted for me or those who did not vote for me,” he said. “I ask you to collect all your complaints and I promise that I will look at them all personally and will give you an answer personally with my own signature.” The 62-year-old leader, whose Party of the Regions lost seats in an election in October while retaining its majority, rarely appears in public and has not given a national press conference for over a year. Commentators say his aides fear this is damaging his image and could rebound on his re-election prospects in 2015.

Ukraine’s Viktor Yanukovich rarely appears in public Since he took power three years ago, the former Soviet republic’s relations with Russia have worsened because of a continued wrangle over the high price of Russian gas. The jailing of ex-prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, his arch-rival, for abuse of office has kept political tension high at home and alienated the US and European Union governments. The International Monetary Fund, Ukraine’s biggest lender, has warned Kiev that it faces a second year of nearzero growth and says its economy is vulnerable to further shocks due to its high current account deficit.

Belgian kindergarten murder trial begins A BELGIAN court set out yesterday to judge the sanity of a man who admitted to killing two babies and a childminder and wounding many others at a day-care centre. In January 2009, Kim De Gelder, then 20 years old, launched his attacks at the Fabeltjesland - Fairytale Land - creche in Dendermonde, 30 km (20 miles) west of Brussels, slashing at victims with a knife, killing a six- and nine-month-old child and a woman

childminder. “I saw a small child, grabbed it by its back and stabbed in its throat, it died in my arms and I put it back on the floor,” De Gelder told investigators during his interrogation, according to the indictment read out yesterday. Apart from the murder of the three, De Gelder is also accused of the attempted murder of 22 others at the day-care centre, many of whom he wounded severely with his knife.

ITALY’S election campaign drew to a close yesterday with the weak performance of outgoing premier Mario Monti key to a deeply uncertain and potentially unstable result. Political leaders were holding their final rallies before a campaigning ban ahead of voting tomorrow and Monday, and analysts said the result was too close to call. “This vote is not at all certain. One percentage point either way could lead to chaos or a clear winner,” said one pollster who asked not to be named because of a two-week ban on opinion surveys. Analysts are divided over whether centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani will be able to form a stable majority capable of pursuing the economic reforms that an uncompetitive Italy needs to exit recession. Bersani is thought to be just a few points ahead of

centre-right leader Silvio Berlusconi but is still seen with a good chance of the winner’s bonus that will give him comfortable control of the lower house. However, the election will revolve around the much more complex Senate race, where winners’ bonuses are awarded on a regional basis. The centre-left and centreright are close to a draw in several battleground regions, including industrial powerhouse Lombardy, which returns the most senators. Berlusconi formed an alliance with the federalist Northern League because of the importance of populous northern regions in the Senate race. Monti, a technocrat former European commissioner who has led a lacklustre centrist campaign, is believed to be fading but analysts disagree about the implications. Electoral expert Roberto D’Alimonte expressed concern that Monti may fall below the 8 per cent threshold to win Senate seats in some regions and said this could

be disastrous for Italy. “What is really important is that Monti does not fall under eight per cent in several regions. The future of Italy and the eurozone depend on this variable, “ he told Reuters. The most likely - many say the most stable and pro-reform result from the election - appears to be a governing alliance between Bersani and Monti, which would require the outgoing premier to win enough Senators to boost the centre-left. Bersani has suggested he wants to form an alliance with Monti to give his government credit with the markets and a strong lawmaking mandate, even if the centre-left wins on its own. However, some other analysts believe that Monti is fading in the so-called “red centre” of Italy where the votes he loses will go to Bersani, increasing the chances of a strong centreleft government which will be able to drive a hard bargain with a weakened Monti over policy.

The court set bail at 1 million rand for Oscar Pistorius and postponed the case until June 4. The athlete was ordered to hand over firearms and passport and avoid his home and all witnesses in the case (AFP)

A SOUTH African court granted bail yesterday to Oscar Pistorius, charged with the murder of his girlfriend, after his lawyers argued the “Blade Runner” was too famous to pose a flight risk. The decision by Magistrate Desmond Nair drew cheers from the athlete’s family and supporters, although he appeared unmoved. Pistorius had broken down in tears earlier in the week-long hearing. The court set bail at 1 million rand ($113,000) and postponed the case until June 4. Pistorius was ordered to hand over firearms and passports, avoid his home and all witnesses in the case, report to a police station twice a week and not to drink alcohol. The decision followed a week of dramatic testimony about how the athlete shot dead Reeva Steenkamp at his luxury home near Pretoria in the early hours of Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day. Prosecutors said Pistorius, 26, committed premeditated murder when he fired four shots into a locked bathroom door, hitting his girlfriend cowering on the other side. Steenkamp, 29, suffered gunshot wounds to her head, hip and arm. Pistorius’ defence team argued the killing was a tragic mistake, saying the athlete had mistaken Steenkamp for

an intruder. They said he was too famous to pose a flight risk and deserved bail to prepare for a case that has drawn worldwide attention. “He can never go anywhere unnoticed,” his lawyer Barry Roux told the court yesterday. The 26-year-old Olympic and Paralympic star’s lower legs were amputated in infancy and he has raced on carbon fibre blades. The Olympic and Paralympic star faces life in prison if convicted of premeditated murder. Prosecutors had portrayed him as a cold-blooded killer. “You cannot put yourself in the deceased’s position. It must have been terrifying. It was not one shot. It was four shots,” prosecutor Gerrie Nel said yesterday.

SHOTS, SCREAMS In an affidavit read out in court, Pistorius said he had been “deeply in love” with Steenkamp, and Roux said his client had no motive for the killing. Pistorius contends he was acting in self-defence after mistaking Steenkamp for an intruder, and feeling vulnerable because he was unable to attach his prosthetic limbs in time to confront the perceived threat. He said he grabbed a 9-mm pistol from under his bed and went into the bathroom. He said he fired into the locked

door of the toilet, which adjoined the bathroom, in a blind panic in the mistaken belief the intruder was lurking inside. Witnesses said they heard gunshots and screams from the athlete’s home on an upscale gated community near Pretoria. The community is surrounded by 3-metre-high stone walls and topped with an electric fence. In a magazine interview a week before her death, published yesterday, Steenkamp, a law graduate and model, spoke about her three-monthold relationship with Pistorius. “I absolutely adore Oscar. I respect and admire him so much,” she told celebrity gossip magazine Heat. “I don’t want anything to come in the way of his career.” Police pulled their lead detective off the case on Thursday after it was revealed he himself faces attempted murder charges for shooting at a minibus. He has been replaced by South Africa’s top detective. The arrest of Pistorius last week shocked those who had watched in awe last year as he reached the semi-final of the 400 metres race in the London Olympics. The impact has been greatest in sports-mad South Africa, where Pistorius was seen as a rare hero who commanded respect from both black and white people, transcending the racial divides that persist 19 years after the end of apartheid.

Chavez breathing woes continue VENEZUELA’S cancer-stricken president, Hugo Chavez, is still suffering respiratory problems after surgery in Cuba two months ago, the government has said in a somber first communique since his homecoming this week. Struggling to talk and breathing through a tracheal tube, the 58-year-old socialist leader is being treated at a Caracas military hospital after returning unseen before dawn on Monday. Long accustomed to the drama and speculation over Chavez’s health since cancer was first detected in June 2011, Venezuelans are now debating if he can recover and return to active rule, or may resign and try to ensure his vice president wins a vote. Some think he may have simply come home to die. “The breathing insufficiency that emerged post-operation persists, and the tendency has not been favourable, so it is still being treated,” read the communique, in gloomy news for Chavez’s millions of passionate supporters. The short statement, read by Information Minister Ernesto Villegas, said, however, that treatment for Chavez’s “base illness” - pre-

sumably the cancer first diagnosed in his pelvic area - continued without “significant adverse effects for now”. Little detailed medical information has been made public on Chavez’s condition, meaning the government’s occasional short statements are pored over by Venezuelans for clues about the future for him and the nation he has dominated since 1999. Chavez is believed to be seeing only close family at the hospital and a few senior officials, including Vice President Nicolas Maduro and National Assembly head Diosdado Cabello. “The patient remains in communication with relatives and the government political group in close collaboration with the medical team,” the statement added. “The president holds firm to Christ, with absolute will to live and maximum discipline in the treatment of his health.” Apart from a few photos of him lying in a Havana hospital bed that were released by the government last week, Chavez has not been seen or heard from in public since his December 11 operation, his fourth surgery for cancer in just 18 months.

India says warned of bombs that killed 16 in IT hub Hyderabad INDIA had intelligence agency warnings of a security threat several days before two bombs went off in a market in the city of Hyderabad, the interior minister said yesterday, adding that the death toll had risen to 16. Four people were in critical condition after the near-simultaneous explosion of the bombs planted on bicycles on Thursday, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told parliament after visiting the site and a hospital

treating some of the 117 wounded. Hyderabad is a major IT centre in India, only second to Bangalore. Microsoft and Google have centres in the city. The blasts happened in a market near a middle-class neighbourhood across the city from the business district. Shinde faced anger over the attack from opposition politicians who questioned whether the government had done enough to prevent it after

the warning. Police said two of three security cameras at the market were not working at the time. No group claimed responsibility and Shinde said it was too early to make accusations. Pakistan condemned the attack. India often blames its Muslim neighbour and old rival for militant attacks including a commando-style assault in Mumbai that killed 166 people in 2008.

“Being itself a victim of terrorism, Pakistan fully understands and shares the pain and agony of the people of India,” the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Police were deployed throughout Hyderabad to prevent violence between Hindus and Muslims in the city where there has recently been tension between the two communities. Bomb blasts in India have in the past led to clashes.

Tunisia president asks Ennahda hardliner to form government

US has double standards over Syria - Russia

TUNISIAN President Moncef Marzouki yesterday asked Interior Minister Ali Larayedh, a hardliner from the main Islamist Ennahda party, to form a government within two weeks, his spokesman said. Marzouki’s spokesman told a news conference Ennahda leader Rached Ghannouchi had formally nominated Larayedh to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, who resigned on Tuesday. Tunisia plunged into political crisis on Feb. 6 when the assassination of secular opposition politician Chokri Belaid on February 6 ignited the biggest street protests since the overthrow of strongman Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali two years ago. Ennahda’s choice for prime minister raised hackles among opposition parties, some of whom accuse Larayedh’s Interior Ministry of failing to curb Islamist violence, although he is credited for acting ďŹ rmly against al Qaeda-linked militants. “The decision deepens the crisis because Larayedh headed the ministry responsible for the killing of Belaid and violence that has spread throughout the country,â€? said Zied Lakh-

Ali Larayedh (above) will replace outgoing PM Hamadi Jebali dar, a leader in the Popular Front, in which Belaid was secretary-general. The Interior Ministry and Ennahda have denied they had any hand in Belaid’s killing, which they have condemned. Mahmoud Baroudi, a leader of the secular Democratic Alliance opposition party, said Larayedh’s appointment would aggravate tensions and increase anger in the streets. “He was responsible for leniency with Islamist violence against human rights

activists, he said, blaming Islamists for disrupting opposition meetings and assassinating Belaid. No one has claimed responsibility for Belaid’s killing. Ennahda is the biggest party in the National Constituent Assembly with 89 of its 217 seats. Marzouki’s secular Congress for the Republic party (CPR), the second largest with 29 seats, has already said it will join a new Ennahda-led coalition. Larayedh, 57, is viewed as part of Ennahda’s hardline wing, which rejects any role for parties linked to the Ben Ali era. A maritime engineer, Larayedh spent 15 years in jail under Ben Ali. He became interior minister when Jebali’s government was formed in December 2011 after an election in October. Jebali, who remains Ennahda’s secretary-general, refused to head the next government after his own party rejected his plan for an apolitical technocrat cabinet to prepare for elections. He was seen as a moderate overruled by Ghannouchi, who says the last election gave Ennahda a popular mandate to rule in a powersharing deal with moderate secular parties.

US response to Syria bomb ‘disappointing’ By Alessandra Prentice RUSSIAN Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the United States yesterday of having double standards on Syria, saying it had blocked a UN Security Council statement condemning a car bomb attack in Damascus. Washington denied it had blocked the statement and said it had only asked for balance. The disagreement was likely to sour the atmosphere before Lavrov meets newly appointed US Secretary of State John Kerry next week in Berlin. Lavrov told a news conference Washington had disappointed Moscow by blocking a statement condemning “terrorist attacks near the Russian embassy in Damascus that killed more than 50 people and that Washington was threatening international unity in the “war on terror. “We believe these are double standards, Lavrov said

after talks with China’s foreign minister. “And we see in it a very dangerous tendency by our American colleagues to depart from the fundamental principle of unconditional condemnation of any terrorist act, a principle which secures the unity of the international community in the ďŹ ght against terrorism,â€? he said.

‘BALANCE SOUGHT’ A spokeswoman for the US mission at the United Nations said it had not blocked any statement of condemnation but had sought to balance the text with criticism of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces, which it said Russia had rejected. “We strongly condemn all indiscriminate terrorist attacks against civilians or against diplomatic facilities, said Erin Pelton, spokeswoman for the US mission. Ties between Washington and Moscow have worsened since Vladimir Putin re-

turned to Russia’s presidency last May. The passage of US legislation intended to punish Russian ofďŹ cials accused of human rights abuses and a Russian ban on American families adopting Russian children have also contributed to the deterioration in recent weeks. Lavrov made his comments at a joint news conference with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi after talks that underlined the closeness of their views on policy in Syria and North Korea. China and Russia, both permanent members of the UN Security Council, have blocked attempts by the West to mount pressure on Assad to end the violence in the nearly two-year-old conict that has killed some 70,000 people. The two ministers condemned North Korea’s nuclear test last week but said that any response should go through the UN Security Council.

Israeli forces, Palestinians clash across West Bank ISRAELI forces clashed with Palestinian protesters throughout the occupied West Bank yesterday, capping a week of violence amid a hunger strike by four Palestinians in Israeli jails. Tension and anticipation is rising in the West Bank a month before US President Barack Obama is due to visit Jerusalem and Ramallah. From the precincts of Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque, both one of Islam’s holiest sites and revered by Jews as the site of their Biblical temple, youths threw stones at Israeli police after Friday prayers. Dozens of Israeli ofďŹ cers briey entered the politically sensitive compound. Witnesses

said ofďŹ cers ďŹ red tear gas and threw percussion grenades at the demonstrators as bystanders and elderly worshippers ran for cover. A police spokesman said no tear gas was ďŹ red, but that protesters were throwing ďŹ recrackers. The old city of Hebron, a bitterly contested city in the southern West Bank sown heavily with Israeli settlers, echoed with percussion grenades hurled by Israeli forces at some 1,500 Palestinian protesters. At a military checkpoint near the northern city of Nablus and outside a military prison in the central West Bank, Israeli forces worked to clear makeshift roadblocks and ďŹ red rubber bullets at stone-throwing Palestinians.

Business German business morale surges GERMAN business morale surged at its fastest pace in over two years in February, pushing higher for a fourth consecutive month and pointing to a solid recovery in Europe’s largest economy after a dismal end to 2012. The Munich-based Ifo think tank said yesterday its business climate index, based on a monthly survey of some 7,000 firms, rose to 107.4 in February, up from a revised 104.3 in January. That was the biggest onemonth rise since July 2010 and beat even the highest estimate in a Reuters poll of economists. The euro and European shares rose after the data. Germany’s economy shrank by 0.6 per cent in the fourth quarter, succumbing to a sharp fall in demand from its eurozone trading partners, but economists expect the gloom to be short-lived and do not see Germany slipping into a recession, defined as two quarters of contraction. “German economic confidence surveys seem to be showing more signs of economic spring, but the economy is still struggling with a massive millstone round its neck, the rest of the beleaguered eurozone economy,” said David Brown of New View Economics. Reflecting the poor outlook for Germany’s neighbours, the EU Commission yesterday said the eurozone economy would not grow until 2014 and downgraded its forecast for German growth this year to 0.5 per cent from 0.8 per cent previously. Ifo itself expects gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 0.2 per cent quarter-on-quarter in the first three months of the year. Ifo’s sub-index on current conditions rose to 110.2 from 108.1 in January, while a gauge of expectations shot up to 104.6 from 100.6.

Eurozone economy to shrink in 2013 By Jan Strupczewski and Robin Emmott THE eurozone will not return to growth until 2014 and struggling Spain and France will be among those who miss debt-cutting targets as a result, the European Commission said yesterday. Paris and Lisbon said they would seek more time from Brussels to reach their deficit goals. Madrid has already indicated the same. The EU’s executive said the eurozone economy, which generates nearly a fifth of global output, would shrink 0.3 per cent in 2013 after a 0.6 per cent fall last year, blaming a lack of bank lending and record joblessness for delaying the recovery. That represented a marked downgrade of the Commission’s prediction from November that the eurozone would grow this year. The euro slipped on the back of the forecasts. The currency bloc is consolidating its public finances to regain market trust after excessive government spending, real-estate bubbles and lack of competitiveness triggered a sovereign debt crisis. “The ongoing rebalancing of the European economy is continuing to weigh on growth in the short term,” EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said. Under EU budget rules, sharpened at the peak of the crisis in late 2011, euro-

European Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn presents the EU Commission’s interim economic forecast during a news conference at the EU Commission headquarters in Brussels yesterday zone countries can face fines if they fail to take action to meet deficit targets set by EU finance ministers. Progress is uneven among the 17 countries sharing the euro. The main laggard was Spain, which badly missed the 6.3 per cent of GDP target for 2012 with a result of 10.2 per cent. While that included 3.2 per cent of GDP cost to recapitalise banks, even at 7.0 per cent the deficit was above target. This year, Madrid will have a deficit of 6.7 per cent rather

than the 4.5 per cent set for it. And unless policies change, Spain will have a gap of 7.2 per cent in 2014 against the target of 2.8, the Commission said. Eurozone countries whose economies perform much worse than expected can count on an extension of deficit deadlines. But they need to show that while they missed the nominal deficit target because of recession, they have still cut the structural deficit, which strips out the effects of the economic cycle and one-off effects.

French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said he would talk to Brussels about pushing back the deficit-cutting timetable and now aims to hit 3 per cent of GDP in 2014 not this year. Portuguese Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho also chipped in, saying Lisbon needed an extra year to get its budget deficit under 3 per cent given a weaker than expected economy. Rehn said decisions would be looked at in May but others were less charitable, par-

ticularly towards Paris. European Central Bank board member Joerg Asmussen urged Paris to take “concrete and measurable” steps to cut the budget deficit, saying France faced a test of its credibility and had to come as close as possible to its 3 per cent goal this year. Michael Fuchs, a senior lawmaker in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative party, referred to France as a “problem child” that was badly trailing its partners on economic reform.

THE European Commission wants to conclude its investigation into the fixing of lending benchmarks Euribor and Libor this year and has offered several banks under suspicion the possibility of a settlement to reduce hefty fines, sources said. If the banks were to agree to such a settlement, it would allow the EU’s antitrust chief Joaquin Almunia to wrap up his investigation as soon as this year and before his term as antitrust commissioner draws to a close in late 2014. “Almunia wants decisions on the cases by the end of the year,” said one of the sources familiar with the investigation. The offer comes almost 18 months after the Commission raided a number of banks suspected of Euribor rate rigging. It later widened its investigation to other benchmarks. The move signals that there is a prospect of reduced fines from Brussels in return for ending any activities that could lead price-fixing of Euribor, the euro interbank-offered rate, and its larger counterpart the London Interbank Offered Rate (Libor). Many banks are reluctant, however, to settle with the Commission because they believe the charges are unfounded, they said. If they resist and the Commission later finds them guilty of manipulation, they would face a fine equivalent to 10 per cent of their annual revenue. That could rise to three times as much if individual banks are prosecuted for rigging three benchmarks. By settling, the fines would be reduced. A spokesman for Almunia declined to comment on the prospect of any settlement. Heavy penalties already loom in other regions. The United States and Britain will by mid-year levy more fines against those alleged to have been involved in interest rate rigging, sources close to the probe said.

BRITAIN’S listed companies could be forced to switch accountants to boost competition and end the cosy relationships that have dismayed shareholders, a UK watchdog warned yesterday. Competition in the UK audit market is restricted by factors that make it hard for companies to switch accountants, the Competition Commission said in preliminary findings from a probe it began in 2011. There is also a tendency for auditors to focus on satisfying management rather than shareholder needs, it said. The commission’s findings disappointed the big accountants but raised a cheer among their smaller rivals and will bolster a draft European Union law which contains similar plans for boosting competition in the 27-country bloc’s audit market. The United States is also mulling auditor rotation as the sector globally faces questions after it gave banks a clean bill of health just

The commission’s findings disappointed the big accountants like KPMG before governments had to rescue them in the 2007-09 financial crisis. The “Big Four” - KPMG, PwC, Ernst & Young and Deloitte - check the books of nearly all big companies in Britain and around the world

and have often served the same clients for decades. “We have found that there can be benefits to companies and their shareholders from switching auditors but too often senior management at large companies are inclined to stick with what they know,” said Laura Carstensen, who chaired the watchdog’s audit probe. The lack of competition is likely to lead to higher prices, lower quality and a failure to meet the demands of shareholders and investors, the commission said. There was “significant dissatisfaction” among big investors and changing the “long standing and entrenched” system will take time. It proposed a mix of reforms, including forcing companies to put out their audit work to tender every five to seven years, and change accounting firms every seven to 14 years - roughly in line with changes being discussed at the EU level.

Bailiffs’ attempt to seize state cars was nothing more than a publicity stunt THE GOVERNMENT may have made a complete mess of the economy, but this in no way justifies what happened at the finance ministry on Thursday morning, when bailiffs arrived with court warrants to seize assets of the state. Such acts may act as a reminder of the government’s disastrous management of state finances – as if a reminder were needed – but also discredit and undermine the state which will still be here after tomorrow’s elections. As events unfolded it became blatantly obvious that this was nothing more than a publicity stunt. The bailiffs had invited photographers and film crews to cover the event as they tried to seize a ministerial car; they reported the car’s driver to the police for driving the car into the basement parking area, on the grounds that he obstructed the execution of a court order. Next they parked a pick-up truck at the exit of the basement to prevent the cars from leaving. The show continued when the commerce minister Neoclis Sylikiotis arrived at the finance ministry for a meeting and his car was flagged down, a bailiff demanding that the driver hand over the keys. Sylikiotis got involved in an altercation with the provocative bailiff who insisted that the driver, a policeman, handed over the car keys. It was truly appalling behaviour which did not just embarrass the government but also ridiculed the state and our justice system. Camera crews filmed a ministry permanent secretary, a minister and policemen (drivers of the cars) showing utter contempt for courtissued seizure warrants. But why were they put in this position? Did the judge who issued the seizure orders not know that there had been an appeal against the district court decision, regarding a land expropriation case, and that the appeal was before the Supreme Court? The state’s request for the rescinding of the seizure warrant, until there was a decision on the appeal, had been rejected by the court which would hear a request for a suspension of the execution of the order on Thursday. The damage has already been done by the landowner who is in dispute with the state and the irresponsible bailiffs who staged this disgraceful publicity stunt. As the exasperated Attorney-General pointed out, “if they (bailiffs) want to execute warrants, the easiest way would be to start with the state’s property at the courts.” He also asked: “Why didn’t they begin execution of the warrant at the offices of the Court Registrar and the judges?” He was absolutely right, as this would have brought home the need for judges to show some common sense when taking this sort of decision, which may have embarrassed the government but it was an even bigger embarrassment for the state and the law.

Prisoner X and the gang who couldn’t shoot straight B

EN Alon, Ben Allen and Benjamin Burroughs are dead. So is Benjamin Zygier, an Australian Zionist who moved to Israel in the 1990s and became an Israeli citizen. He then adopted the curious custom of flying back to Australia at fairly frequent intervals to change his name (Australia lets its citizens change their names once every twelve months). And every time, Zygier would take out an Australian passport in his new name. The reason, it turns out, was that he had been recruited by Mossad, the Israeli external intelligence agency, to supply it with Australian passports for use in its foreign operations. So far, nothing new. Israel has been compelled at various times to apologise to the British, Canadian and Australian governments, among others, for using the passports of Israelis with dual citizenship in its various clandestine operations abroad. But then the Israeli government arrested Zygier, and held him in solitary confinement until he committed suicide in his cell in late 2010. It has taken until now for the story to get out because Zygier’s imprisonment without trial was treated as a state secret. Even his jailers were not allowed to know the name of “Prisoner X” or the reason he was being held – and after his death the Israeli government went to extreme lengths to keep the whole affair secret, even threatening Israeli editors with fines or jail if they reported on it. What could he have known or done to merit such treatment? Maybe he had stumbled across some apocalyptic secret that would change everything if it got out. Maybe Israel doesn’t really have hundreds of nuclear weapons, or even any. Maybe all the Jewish settlements in occupied Palestinian territory are just Po-

temkin villages. But it seems improbable, doesn’t it? The likely answer is that the Mossad hit team that murdered Palestinian leader Mahmoud alMabhouh in Dubai in January, 2010 used one or more of Zygier’s passports, and he started to get cold feet. Especially since around the same time the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation woke up and had a little chat with him about his multiple name changes. So did Zygier just lose his nerve and confess the passport scam to the ASIO? That would annoy his Israeli employers, but not so much that they would turn him into “Prisoner X”. The Australian government would complain through diplomatic channels, the Israeli government would solemnly promise not to do it again, and Mossad would just carry on as if nothing had happened. Israel regularly spies on the United States, its greatest ally, and then shamelessly lobbies Congress to get its convicted spies released, so it’s obviously not going to worry about offending the Australians. But what if the ASIO turned Zygier into a double agent, and pumped him for information on Israeli “black” operations? If he had real information about those operations and started passing it to the Australians, that would explain the great anger of the Israeli authorities and the extreme secrecy that surrounded his case. Whatever. The point is not Zygier’s personal tragedy, or even Israel’s misuse of the passports of its friends and allies in its black ops. It is rather that all this Boy’s Own cloak-and-dag-

Benjamin Zygier, an Australian Zionist, committed suicide ger stuff is profoundly foolish. Or at least the dagger part is. When Mossad occupies itself in gathering intelligence and doing strategic analysis, it does good work. For example, it has been successful so far in its attempts to talk Binyamin Netanyahu’s government out of launching an extremely ill-advised attack on Iran over its alleged nuclear weapons ambitions. But Mossad’s assassination programme is a long-running disaster. Sometimes it kills the wrong person, as when it murdered an innocent Moroccan waiter in Norway whom it mistook for one of those responsible for the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. But what enemy of Israel was deterred, what further attack on Israel was prevented, by Mossad’s success in hunting down and killing more than a dozen other people whom it suspected of being involved in that atrocity? When five Mossad agents, travelling on Canadian passports, poisoned Khaled Meshaal, then

head of Hamas’s political bureau, in Amman in 1997, it nearly wrecked Jordan’s peace treaty with Israel, and in the end Israel had to come up with an antidote for the poison. Canada even withdrew its ambassador from Israel for a time. And when it murdered Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai three years ago, just three days after the first-ever visit by an Israeli cabinet minister to the United Arab Emirates, it put a promising detente between the two countries into the deep freeze indefinitely. The whole wig-and-fake-passport nonsense is worse than a distraction from Mossad’s real job. It is self-indulgent and counter-productive. And often, when innocent bystanders are killed in these operations, it is criminal. You know, like those US drone strikes that kill innocent bystanders every month. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose column is published in 45 countries

Cooperation outside Cyprus talks should be possible THE recent announcement by energy giant Shell that it was not considering exploration works in the eastern Mediterranean demonstrates that corporations - actors which are not states or international organisations - will not make a significant investment in this region before the parties concerned are in a state of agreement. Just as the conclusion of an agreement between the sides could be in the form of a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, it could also be in the form of the conclusion of an “agreement” to cooperate on certain specific issues. In fact, cooperation founded on agreement in certain areas which is achieved prior to a comprehensive settlement, would itself both assist the two sides in overcoming the prejudices that they have mutually developed over time and ease the achievement of a comprehensive settlement as well. I have been emphasising for a long time that while the comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem is our first pref-

Comment Kudret Özersay erence, the path of reason necessitates that cooperation is achieved in the areas of energy, tourism, trade and transportation with the involvement of all actors/stakeholders in the Eastern Mediterranean region, independent of whether or not there is such a settlement. Cooperation was achieved on this island when a need emerged on the Greek Cypriot side regarding the matter of electricity. One side was able to sell electricity to the other side, without the sides recognising each other. Cooperation over the exploration and exploitation of the hydrocarbon resources that lie around the island and their delivery to international markets can be secured not only between the Turkish and Greek Cypriots, but between all interested actors, including multinational corporations. In terms of the transportation to Turkish or international

markets, the route via Turkey presents itself as the cheapest, safest and most stable. The Turkish Cypriot side has, as it stands, made a proposal to the UN Secretary General concerning the joint exploration and exploitation of these resources and their transformation to international markets via piplines through Turkey. There are now statements emanating from even the Greek Cypriot Church that could be interpreted as conciliatory. Whoever emerges as the new Greek Cypriot leader from the elections, I hope that he will exhibit a pragmatic, rational approach that can also provide a remedy to the economic collapse in the south of the island. While there is an economic meltdown being experienced in the Greek Cypriot community, there is in the Turkish Cypriot community a more profound administrative, systemic impasse. Let us no longer make dependent upon a settlement, models of cooperation that will provide both sides with the opportunity for relief and assist the two

communities to begin to plan a future founded upon their own will. With two parallel processes - on the one hand continuing the search for a comprehensive settlement - let us turn on the other hand to cooperation that includes also neighbouring countries and corporations and is unfettered by whether or not there is to be a settlement. Let us not overlook the fact that only one person, that is the Greek Cypriot leader will change as a result of the election All the remaining members of the Greek Cypriot National Council will continue to be the same. As a consequence, I believe that we cannot afford to once again postpone taking-up potential opportunities by making their realisation conditional upon a settlement. I hope the Greek Cypriot community will progress with a leader who will see this as evident. Showbiz Depp nearly mangled by a horse during filming Jackson was

Johnny Depp as Tonto, in the Lone Ranger remake

JOHNNY Depp was nearly “horrifically mangled” by a horse while filming ‘The Lone Ranger’. The 49-year-old plays Native American warrior Tonto in the new Disney western and had an “unpleasant” moment when he fell off his steed, causing him to almost be crushed by the “death machine” of an animal. Speaking on ‘The Late Show With David Letterman’, he said: “There was one moment in particular where it got unpleasant. We’d been running [the horses] all day

and they weren’t really interested in slowing down, at all. “My horse that I was on decided to jump a couple of these little obstacles. The horse was unaware that the saddle I was wearing to sit on top of it was sort of jerryrigged, kind of faked. “When we came down, the saddle slipped and I went to the left and (lost) the reins, somehow I had the wherewithal to grab his mane - all very calm for some reason, I figured fear would kick in, but it didn’t. “I saw in front of my eyes these

very muscular horse legs and the striations of muscles moving, this kind of death machine. One word popped into my head - hooves! You know? Hooves. In any case, mind the hooves.” Johnny could have been seriously injured if it wasn’t for the horse jumping over him, avoiding a near-miss with the actor’s head. He added: “The one thing that saved me was the horse’s instinct to lift his front legs and go over me. If not, it was coming straight down into the head.”

Singer Tulisa ‘facing the chop from the X Factor’ The talent show has had a rough time in the ratings TULISA is said to be facing the chop from the X Factor panel in a show revamp. The former N-Dubz star - whose own pop career is flagging after a lacklustre showing for her debut album - is reportedly to be axed from the ITV show. The Sun said that she had not been formally told she was being dropped but said this would happen “within weeks”. The talent show had a tough time in the ratings last year with a huge slump in viewers which helped Strictly Come Dancing step out in front in the Saturday night ratings battle. The first stage of the X Factor final in December had the worst audience since its 2005 equivalent. However, winner James Arthur still achieved huge sales for his debut single Impossible and was the fastest seller of the year. Tulisa has been with the show for two series but the high profile show has put her relationships in the spotlight. She was

also horrified when a “sex tape” emerged which led to a court battle with the former lover who leaked the footage. Her debut album The Female Boss made it to only number 35 in the charts, despite going to number one with her first solo single Young. It is not clear whether Gary Barlow will stick with the programme for another year, and it is claimed that there may be pressure on Louis Walsh to go, although Simon is said to be keen to keep him. Earlier this week it was reported that Take That star Robbie Williams was being considered for a slot on the judging panel. The Sun said TV bosses wanted Robbie and Gary to provide “fireworks” on the show, and were also planning to bring back Nicole Scherzinger as a judge. A spokesman for X Factor said: “No formal decisions have been made about the panel for this year’s series of the X Factor as yet.”

THE JACKSONS believe their brother Michael Jackson was persecuted like Jesus. The group - brothers Tito, Jackie, Marlon and Jermaine - think the late King of Pop’s life mirrored the Biblical figure’s own existence in many ways because of the effect he had on people and the way his life was destroyed. Asked if Michael was a pop messiah, Jackie said: “I wouldn’t say that. No one’s bigger than God or Jesus. “But everywhere Michael went, every country, when he left the airport people would line up on the freeway just to get a glimpse of him.” Speaking to The Guardian newspaper, Jermaine added: “God blessed him because he knew what Michael was going to do with his talent. He was a voice for children who were starving, and he brought the world song like ‘We Are The World’, ‘Heal The World’ and ‘Man In The Mirror’. Everything he did was for the betterment of mankind.

Who has the sexiest facial hair?

Jackman tops poll on designer stubble

‘persecuted like Jesus’ say late pop star’s brothers

HUGH Jackman is the star with the sexiest facial hair. The 44-year-old actor - who most recently sported thick facial hair in the Oscar nominated ‘Les Miserables’ - has topped a poll to find the celebrity with the most attractive beard beating a host of other famous hunks to the title. In second place was stubbly Bradley Cooper, David Beckham - who is currently sporting designer stubble came third, while grey-bearded George Clooney and Ben Affleck, who has full face fuzz, rounded off the top five. The vote of 1,000 people was conducted by the UK’s leading hair transplant centre, the Crown Clinic in Manchester, and surgeon Dr. Asim Shahmalak insists Hugh is a worthy winner. Dr. Shahmalak - who is a hair loss expert on British TV show ‘Embarrassing Bodies’ - said: “Hugh Jackman looks great whatever kind of facial hair he has - stubble, a moustache or a beard ... For many men, growing a beard or designer stubble defines their masculinity. It is not surprising that more than six out of 10 believe they look sexier with some form of facial hair.” Just as Hugh Jackman was named the star with the sexiest facial hair, Brad Pitt was voted the famous hunk with the least attractive beard. Brad’s greying goatee was a turn-off for women, while second-placed Joaquin Phonenix’s wild chin bush and third-placed Simon Le Bon’s new extravagant handlebar moustache also failed to impress the ladies in the poll.

“You mentioned Jesus. Look what he did when he walked the earth. He did all those miracles and they still found a way to nail him up on that cross.” The four brothers went on to allege Dr. Conrad Murray - who is currently serving jail time for involuntary manslaughter for his part in Michael’s death from Propofol intoxication in June 2009 - was a stooge of his record company Sony and they believe the label deliberately orchestrated his downfall by planting allegations of child molestation in the media. The ‘Thriller’ singer bought a 50 per cent stake in Sony/ATV in 1985 and his siblings have a “conspiracy theory” that the label wanted to diminish his popularity and power to wrestle control of the valuable catalogue of songs back from Michael. Jermaine accusingly said: “Bottom line? They killed him. The doctor was just a finger in a bigger hand.” The police searched Michael’s home on November 18, 2003 for evidence of child abuse, on the same day his ‘Number Ones’ compilation album was released, an action the Motown legends believe was a deliberate attempt to sabotage his career. Jermaine added: “It was the biggest album he ever could have had, probably bigger than ‘Thriller’. And they put this c**p out about him, on the day of its release? That’s no coin-

Sony seeks head start over MS with new PlayStation Yahoo Inc is set to incorporate features familiar to Facebook users

Yahoo teams up with Facebook YAHOO Inc is overhauling its website to incorporate features familiar to Facebook users such as a newsfeed and people’s “likes”, in CEO Marissa Mayer’s biggest product revamp since taking the helm of the ailing company last year. Mayer, who took over in July after a procession of CEOs was shown the door, said in a blog post on Wednesday that Yahoo’s redesigned website will let users log in with their Facebook IDs to be able to gain access to content and information shared by friends from articles and videos to birthdays. Yahoo is one of the world’s most-visited online properties, but revenue has declined in recent years amid competition from Google Inc and Facebook Inc. The changes to Yahoo’s Internet shop window, which include a more streamlined mobile application for smartphones and tablets, will be rolled out over coming days. The makeover follows a new version of Yahoo mail, one of its most popular applications, introduced in December. Analysts say the move marks a strengthening of Yahoo’s ties with Facebook, employing some of the social network’s growing data on its billion-plus users to battle Google for Web users’ attention. It remains to be seen whether the initial makeover and tweaks expected over time will win back its Internet audience. “This is definitely an important step. The Yahoo home page is one of the most important things because it is the first interface,” said B. Riley Caris analyst Sameet Sinha. “It’s familiar in terms of layout, the newsfeed is interesting, and it will be interesting to see how it develops over time. “The key will be how data is aggregated within Yahoo and Facebook.”

PlayStation 4 to launch over holiday season By Liana B. Baker and Malathi Nayak SONY Corp said it will launch its next-generation PlayStation this year, hoping its first video game console in seven years will give it a much-needed head start over the next version of Microsoft’s Xbox and help revive its stumbling electronics business. The new console will have a revamped interface, let users stream and play video games hosted on servers and allow users to play while downloading titles as well as share videos with friends. Its new controller, dubbed DualShock 4, will have a touchpad and a camera that can sense the depth of the environment in front of it. Sony, which only displayed the controller but not the console, said on Wednesday the PlayStation 4 would be available for the year-end holiday season and flagged games from the likes of Ubisoft Entertainment SA and Activision Blizzard Inc, whose top executives also attended the glitzy launch event. It did not disclose pricing or an exact launch date. Sony’s announcement comes amid industry speculation that Microsoft Corp is set to unveil the successor to its Xbox 360 later this summer. But all video game console makers are grappling with the onslaught of mobile devices into their turf. Tablets and smartphones built by rivals such as Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd already account for around 10 per cent of the

$80 billion gaming market. Those mobile devices, analysts predict, will within a few years be as powerful as the current slew of gameonly consoles. “It looks good and had a lot of great games but the industry is different now,” Billy Pidgeon, an analyst at Inside Network Research, said of the new PlayStation. “It’ll be a slow burn and not heavy uptake right away.”

HTC unveils revamped handset TAIWAN’S HTC Corp has unveiled the new smartphone that it hopes will set it apart from the crowd of Google Android devices on the market and help it make up ground lost to Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Apple Inc. It has distinguished the phone, the HTC One, from rival Android devices by using new software - the BlinkFeed feature - to replace icons on the home screen with a personalised stream of news articles, social networking updates, photos and video. HTC is also billing it as the first smartphone with a builtin remote control function, opening a window into a potential new business model for phone vendors and cable TV operators. HTC is in discussions with cable operators in different countries, and hopes to offer a more interactive package for consumers by transforming the phone into a remote

The HTC One is billed as the first smartphone with a builtin remote control function control for TVs, set-top boxes and receivers, according to analysts who attended a conference with HTC on Tuesday. The company declined to comment on whether it was in talks. “The new TV connectivity feature inspires new im-

agination regarding how the smartphone and TV space may evolve,” said CK Lu, an analyst for Gartner based in Taipei. “It allows for deep collaboration,” he said. Possibilities include co-developing apps and bundleselling by smartphone makers and cable operators, Lu said, which would expand sales channels. HTC was an early, and successful, maker of smartphones based on Android, but it has been eclipsed by the increasing dominance of Samsung, which Gartner said made more than 42 per cent of Android smartphones in the fourth quarter. Android is widening its lead in smartphone operating systems, with devices running the software capturing nearly 70 per cent of the market last quarter, Gartner said last week. HTC’s new device features a 4.7 inch screen and quad-core processor.

Console makers will also have to tackle flagging video game hardware and software sales, which research firm NPD group says have dropped consistently every month over the last year as users migrate to free game content on mobile devices. PlayStation 4 will have an app on Android and Apple mobile devices that connects to console games and can act as a second screen,

Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, said in an interview. “Playstation 4 ... really connects every device in the office and the smartphone and the tablet out there in the world,” Tretton said. The console, which has been in development for the last five years, will have 8 GB of memory and will instantly stream game content from the console to Sony’s handheld PlayStation Vita through a feature called “Remote Play”, the company said. “What Sony is banking on is the ease of the use of this system,” Greg Miller, PlayStation executive editor at video game site IGN.com, said. After six years, Sony PlayStation sales are just shy of Xbox’s 67 million installed base and well behind the 100 million Wii consoles sold by Nintendo Co Ltd, according to analysts. Tretton said it would be a big undertaking to manufacture and distribute the console in Sony’s four major markets by the end of the year, adding that it would be a “phased rollout” that starts before the end of the year. Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia predicted Sony would probably get a couple of million units of the PlayStation 4 out by the 2013 holiday season and 7 million or 8 million out a year later. Sony also announced a strategic partnership with video game publisher Activision Blizzard to take its Diablo III game to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 consoles. Activision’s upcoming scifi shooter game Destiny in development by its Bungie Studio will also be available on PlayStation consoles.

Diesel engines were and still are widely used in Europe

Diesel engine patent In 1893, Rudolf Diesel received a German patent for the diesel engine. His engine burned fuel oil rather than gasoline, and used the heat of compression rather than a spark to initiate ignition to burn the fuel injected into the combustion chamber. Diesel engines were used widely in Europe for their efficiency and power, but Diesel cars never caught on in the US, partly because the diesel engine’s greater efficiency is off-set by higher emissions of soot, odor, and air pollutants.

WHY THE OSCAR Despite a growing number of awards shows, the Oscars still manage to captivate says Leonard Maltin

I

’ve been watching the Oscars since I was 11. This required getting permission from my parents to stay up late on a school night, but they knew how much movies meant to me. It was the only night of the year when one could see the biggest stars in Hollywood on the small screen. Audrey Hepburn, Sidney Poitier and Elizabeth Taylor didn’t appear on talk shows in those days. Memories like mine have been shared by a number of excited Oscar winners, who have said how unreal it seems to be standing at that podium, which they never dreamed of when watching the awards show as children. I doubt the critics questioning the Oscars’ relevance today could recall anyone making a similar speech at the Golden Globes or any of the newly minted award shows that have permeated the pop culture landscape. That’s because these shows don’t have the history, tradition or worldwide impact that sets the Academy Awards apart from the crowd. And while some of these ceremonies have better reputations than others, they all exist in the shadow of the Oscars – the locomotive that drives a massive and increasingly complex Hollywood machine known as awards season. Nothing else much matters once autumn arrives in Tinseltown. The rest of the world may have other things on its mind, but in Los Angeles the build-up begins on

Labour Day weekend, when the first award-worthy pictures are unveiled at the Venice, Toronto and Telluride (Colorado) film festivals. That’s where movies like The Artist and Slumdog Millionaire were launched. A few months later at the Oscars, filmmakers get to bask in the glow of success, while those who finance and release the movies get to see a concrete return at the box office. All this hype inspires people to see those movies – in theatres, on video or online. How many Americans would have sought out a black-and-white silent movie from France or a subtitled Indian movie with no movie stars without the ballyhoo that concluded on the Academy Awards stage? The man or woman on the street may complain that the Oscars don’t reflect popular taste, but that was never their purpose. The Oscars are meant to maintain a standard of excellence that is often at odds with box-office returns. If millions of people didn’t rush to see Winter’s Bone or The Hurt Locker, it’s their loss and not the Academy’s fault. This culture gap has taken a toll on the Oscars, however, as the ratings for its annual broadcast has dropped into the 30 million to 40 million range, according to the Nielsen Company, after peaking with 55 million viewers in 1998, the year of Titanic - one of the rare box-office blockbusters to also dominate the Oscars. gender lines to join, although it still has a long way to go. Its 6,000 members are proposed by colleagues in various branches, from screenwriters to makeup artists, and voted in once a year. Journalists like me are not included. Core members still skew mostly older and white - membership is almost never revoked - yet these supposedly out-of-touch professionals are the first to embrace young and emerging talent such as Jennifer Lawrence, Jesse Eisenberg, Rooney Mara, Octavia Spencer and Jeremy Renner, to name just a few. The Academy also operates a world-class research library and film archive and supports student filmmakers and film festivals, all based on the licence fee it receives for that one telecast. Critics have urged the Academy to delete the “duller” awards from its agenda, following the example of the Grammy Awards. But the Grammys have the advantage of being able to ask its musical nominees to sing and play onstage. The Oscars can’t very well have actors come out and perform scenes from their latest hits. Every producer who tries to make the show leaner and tighter learns a sobering truth: no matter how glitzy the opening may be, there are at least 24 awards to hand out. At some point, someone will have to read long lists of nominees in categories like Sound Editing and

RS STILL MATTER Visual Effects, followed by the speeches of winners that few in the audience know or care about. Therein lies the Oscar conundrum: it isn’t a show, it’s an awards ceremony disguised as a show. If it were to change, it wouldn’t be the Oscars. I say this as a purist living in a world of rapid change, where there is little sentiment or regard for tradition. That’s why youngerskewing, hipper shows are able to steal some of the Oscar’s thunder. The kind of major-league stars who used to be seen only once a year on

the Academy broadcast now turn up on TV year-round, promoting their movies. One reason the Johnnycome-lately award shows have been embraced by the movie industry itself is that it helps promote their movies at a time when the cost of advertising and promotion has gone sky-high. The kind of offbeat, upscale films that vie for year-end honours often don’t have blockbuster promotional budgets, so free publicity is catnip to their studios and distributors. Yet even the “free” publicity of awards season is starting to cost more. For at least a decade, studios have shuttled A-list stars and directors from one Hollywood industry screening or Q&A session to another, often hitting two or three such events in one evening. The goal is to work their way into voters’ hearts and minds, not unlike a presidential candidate on the campaign trail. One can only imagine the bills for private jets, limousines and stylists who tend to these stars as they make their rounds. And this doesn’t even include the televised award shows, which continue to multiply like rabbits. Some of those pretenders to the throne

At some point, someone will have to read long lists of nominees in categories like Sound Editing and Visual Effects,, followed by the speeches of winners that few in the audience know or care about earn considerable attention, and the Golden Globes presentation features more stars than even the Academy can muster. (After all, it honours both movies and television shows, and has separate categories for comedy and drama). No one with a cardcarrying publicist can afford to ignore such an event, but the same philosophy is now applied to even more spurri ious gatherings like the rious st st star-studded Hollyw ood Film Awards in wood O ctober. October. It’s unlikely that anyone would spit in the eye of an organisation offering him a prize, even if it’s jjust ju st for s h o w ing up, which often

seems to b be the case. And no one would disdain a citation from the e estimable guilds that represent producers, directors, write writers, and actors… not to mentio mention the organisations made up of cinematographers, cos costume designers, editors and c composers. They all conduct a awards ceremonies, or “kudo “kudofests,” as the trade paper V Variety dubs them. And wh while the number of workin working critics has shrunk in thi this era of downsizing fo for newspapers and mag magazines, the number of c critics’ groups profferi fering awards has risen sha sharply. N No one is more aw aware of the comp petition and what iit signifies than the Academy itself. For the first time this year, the 85-yearold organisation is allowing question-and-answer sessions with actors and filmmakers at Academy

member screenings. Until now, studios that wanted to parade Steven Spielberg or Meryl Streep before an industry crowd had to settle for Screen Actors Guild gatherings and other non-Academysanctioned events. One arena in which the Academy was ahead of the curve was in thinking globally. In the mid-1940s, Hollywood’s elite recognised the artistic brilliance of European cinema by honouring such films as the Italian films Shoeshine and The Bicycle Thief. It remained an honourary award voted by the Board of Governors (bestowed on such masterpieces from France and Japan as Forbidden Games and Rashomon) before becoming a normal competitive category in 1956. This year, 71 countries, from Afghanistan to Vietnam, submitted feature-length films. The announcement of Seth MacFarlane, the creator and edgy voice of Family Guy, as the next host also sends a message that the Oscars are

not stuck in the past. The Academy website is more active than ever, posting coverage of its many live events, and the public-relations staff is embracing social media, apps and YouTube. I still look forward to Oscar night every year. I don’t expect or demand a great show, but every now and then the producers pull off something memorable… or a winner creates a bit of magic. When Jon Stewart brought a virtual unknown, Markéta Irglová, back onstage after a commercial break so she could express her deep feelings about winning an Oscar for the song Falling Slowly, from Once, she captivated the audience in the theatre and at home. Why? Because she spoke from the heart. Moments like this create indelible memories and inspire young people around the world to pursue their dreams. Ultimately, after all the back-slapping and self-congratulation dies down, that’s why the Oscars still matter.

Next Week Music Media and music The recently founded ensemble of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, Cam-Media, continues to enrich its educational and family concert series with a production under the title Cam-Media. This production is organised in collaboration with the Secondary General Education Department of the Ministry of Education and Culture and with the participation of 200 gymnasium students. Four morning educational concerts will take place and an evening concert will be open to the public on Wednesday, at Strovolos Municipal Theatre, in Nicosia. Cam-Media is a participatory and interactive music work. Participatory, because it is based on the students’ active participation, and interactive because the children play an important role in shaping the work’s final result, with every performance being different and unique. The work refers to the relationship between the human and his surroundings (nature, natural phenomena, human interference, disasters, communication, language, technology, etc). Cam-Media is

composed especially for a string orchestra accompanied by sound effects - natural and electronic sounds created by the computer on stage. The students participate by creating musical instruments with natural materials, recyclable materials, objects from our everyday life even mobile phones, while using their own body or voice through singing or recitation. It is not necessary for students to have any musical knowledge, but by following simple guidelines they can cooperate with the professional members of the orchestra. The programme for next week’s show will consist of various musical elements. The first part will be conducted by Roland Melia and will include famous works by Mozart, Strauss and Hadjidakis, but will also incorporate a jazzy feel with Pamela Wedgwood’s Jazzin’ About Suite. The second part will include the interactive composition Cam-Media by Alexandros Mouzas, conducted by him in person. In this composition there will be active participation from gymnasium students. Cam-Media Evening concert by recently-founded ensemble of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra featuring a string orchestra, a computer and group of students. February 27. Strovolos Municipal Theatre, Nicosia. 8pm. €7 for adults and free entrance for children and young people under the age of 18. Tel: 22-313010

Ongoing Exhibition History in print Opus 39 Gallery in Nicosia is currently hosting an exhibition of engravings, prints and posters of political and cultural content. The exhibition runs until next Saturday and showcases prints by Mytaras, Fassianos and Ad. Diamantis as well as posters: political and cultural from the last 25 years. These items are collectables, which in the digital era that we are living in, is surely becoming a rare commodity. Though the world of print is receding before a tide of digital books, blogs and other websites, a generation of people weaned on technology appear to be holding on to traditional print either as an investment for the future or for nostalgia’s sake. If you are looking for an unusual piece of art to decorate a home or office, these truly limitededition prints are perfect. These vintage items are extraordinary snapshots of our past, an actual piece of our history and, as con-

versation pieces they are unrivalled. Any of these, increasingly rare, works of art are also great gifts, not to mention comparatively cheap to purchase. Past & Present Group etching, printing and poster exhibition. Until March 2. Opus 39 Gallery, 21 Kimonos Street, Nicosia. Monday: 5pm-8pm. Tuesday-Friday: 10.30am-12.30pm and 5pm-8pm. Tel: 22-424983

History the focus for local educators TEACHING is one of the most demanding yet rewarding jobs a person can do, but as we know all too well, getting students engaged, eager and enthusiastic about the subject matter is a challenging task. Even if a student has a strong interest in a particular subject, it can be easy for them to get distracted and lose focus. Keeping kids interested in class requires some creativity, flexibility and experimentation. With this in mind the Association for Historical Dialogue & Research (AHDR) is organising a unique bi-communal educational workshop which will be held within the framework of the AHDR Professional Development Programme, on March 2 at the Home for Cooperation, Ledra Palace UN Buffer Zone. The all-day professional development workshop for educators aims to provide a short and comprehensive overview of AHDR’s Supplementary Educational Materials, which have been developed over the last few years based on new and innovative approaches in History teaching. Teaching history has many important benefits, it provides us with a sense of identity and context from which to understand ourselves and others. History also teaches us how to learn from the mistakes of others and understand change and societal development. One of AHDR’s major initiatives is the development of supplementary educational materials for educators and young people. It is their objective that such materials will help to foster multi-dimensional perspective, historical understanding and critical thinking amongst educators and students. In the last decade, a more robust model of instruction has gained momentum in history education. The traditional teaching methods where experts talked for hours to passive students, coupled with seminars for large audiences have fallen out of favour. History educators have articulated a model of learning that emphasises student “inquiry” and the critical thinking skills distinctive to the professional disciplines of history. For example, history educators have increasingly turned to primary sources, even with younger elementary students, to help them engage in disciplinary work. In examining the raw material of the past, students learn to read critically and sceptically. The upcoming workshop offers an excellent

pedagogical opportunity for all primary and secondary education teachers and especially those teaching History and also Language and Social Sciences teachers who would like to become familiar with AHDR’s Educational Materials and their theoretical background and also to enhance their capacity in using the materials to enrich their teaching. You may look at a relevant videoblog on Youtube by searching for Learning History Together (2012). Each participant will be presented with a certificate of attendance and a free package of the AHDR publications. The workshop will be conducted in the English language and a free lunch will be provided. At the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to join an educational tour of the Arabahmet neighbourhood, based on AHDR’s teaching material, Nicosia is Calling. The workshop will involve the following teaching materials: A Look at Our Past, Thinking Historically about Missing Persons, Introducing Oral History – when people’s stories become history, Learning to investigate the History of Cyprus through artefacts and Nicosia is Calling. The production of the AHDR Educational Materials and the Professional Development Workshop are part of AHDR’s Multiperspectivity and Intercultural Dialogue in Education (MIDE) project, which is supported by the United Nations Development Programme – Action for Cooperation and Trust (UNDP-ACT). By Preston Wilder Shallow Hal (Capital, 21.00) What’s the message here? ‘Be nice to fat people, because they look like Gwyneth Paltrow on the inside’? Sounds a bit condescending when you put it like that, but in fact this sly Farrelly Brothers comedy is both funny and emotionally wrenching. Jack Black is Hal, a shallow man who only dates beautiful women - at least till self-help guru Tony Robbins (as himself) hypnotises him into seeing women’s inner beauty, so he ‘sees’ Gwyneth Paltrow when in fact the object of his affection is grotesquely overweight. Trouble is, of course, he doesn’t know she’s really fat (not having realised what Tony’s done to him), and she doesn’t know that he doesn’t know. The stage is set for incredibly painful

revelations, so painful you might find yourself cringing - which is why the happy ending (to the strains of ’Love grows where my Rosemary goes’) is so satisfying. Clever comedy, albeit with some stupid bits; not shallow at all, really. Made in 2001. A Thousand Words (Novacinema1, 22.00) A picture is worth a thousand words - and a picture of Eddie Murphy doing his bug-eyed, lip-pursing schtick (think of someone seeing a ghost and sucking on a lemon at the same time) would be enough to warn you off this lame kids’ movie, but I guess we should write some words as well. “Make every word count,”

advises the trailer - which is also what Murphy has to do, the well-known motormouth forced to pipe down when a spiritual guru hits him with a strange curse. A magical tree appears in Eddie’s garden, a tree with a thousand leaves; every time he speaks a word, a leaf falls off the tree - and, when he says a thousand words, both he and the tree will die. The idea is that having to be non-verbal (cue frantic hand gestures as our hero attempts to communicate) will make Eddie a Better Person - a mushy message that’s worked in the past, but this time even the ‘family’ audience deserted him and the film was a flop. Why? Insert a picture of punters clawing their own face off at the thought of yet another Eddie Murphy movie. Made in 2012.

ARIES March 21 - April 20

LEO July 23 - August 22

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21

Work done from behind the scenes should go well. You may get better results by keeping a low profile and sorting out basic issues that once resolved mean you could get up and running in no time. There could be plenty of opportunity for misunderstandings and general confusion, especially as Mercury turns retrograde. Best advice? Take the day as it comes.

Be wary of financial propositions with strings attached, or of getting involved in get-rich-quick schemes which could lose you more money than you gain. As Mercury turns retrograde, you might benefit from checking your security software on your computer. Do keep your personal information safe. Don’t leave anything to chance, as you don’t want to get caught out.

You may feel that your hands are tied with one project, especially when it comes to matters at home or to DIY. However, if you focus on what you can do, you’ll enjoy success with something else. If you’re thinking of redecorating or renovating your place, it helps to have a plan and a budget. Don’t just hope for the best, be more measured.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

VIRGO August 23 - September 23

CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20

A tendency to do too much in a rush could lead to oversights and mistakes. Other influences today could exacerbate this tendency and cause you to get into a mess, if you aren’t careful. This isn’t the best time for multi-tasking, as it’s likely that none of the things you attempt would go well. It is better for relaxing and having fun however.

You may feel as though a burden has been lifted from your shoulders, especially if you manage to bring a project to a fabulous finish. There is potential for plenty of fun, so it’s worth planning some kind of special recreational event. Romance is also a hot topic right now. Whether single or committed, good things are possible, so be upbeat.

Today and in the weeks ahead could be a productive time if you work in creative fields. If your job is linked with writing, advertising, the media in general or any other kind of promotion, you may have your work cut out for you. The only problem you might have to deal with is that of procrastination. Stick to your schedule to enjoy success.

GEMINI May 22 - June 21

LIBRA September 24 - October 23

AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19

There could be a mix-up today and in the near future, if you aren’t clear about your intentions or about what you want to communicate. If you have an interview or important meeting it might help to rehearse your strategy, rather than thinking on the fly. Any detailed preparatory work should help cement future progress, so keep at it.

Today or in the weeks ahead, you may sign-up for a course, lecture or seminar. It is also possible that a colleague may be envious of you in some way. If you feel you’re getting mixed messages from someone at work, it might be a good idea to make sure that you’re both on the same page when discussing important projects or plans.

As Mercury turns retrograde today in your personal financial zone, you may find some money you’re hoping for isn’t getting a green light, or simply doesn’t arrive on time. It’s an excellent time to start a new project, as you’ll have plenty of ideas and an intuitive sense of what to do next. You can expect delays, but these may work for you in the long-term.

CANCER June 22 - July 22

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22

PISCES February 20 - March 20

The focus seems to be on personal finances, perhaps even on shopping too. You may have a desire to splash out on a few luxuries, and to heed intuitive hints about the kind of clothes or other items that might be best suited to your needs. Be careful if you’re travelling as Mercury turns retrograde today, and in the near future you may experience more delays than usual.

Be flexible and adaptable if faced with an unexpected change of plan today. A financial matter might concern you early on. However, it’s also an excellent time for promoting your ideas. You could receive a nice invitation to go do something special, such as see a show or go to a movie. Solo? Romance is potentially on the cards, if you are keen.

There may be a minor problem to deal with that involves a relative. Actually, this could be a problem that is ongoing, and that needs your focus in order to resolve it once and for all. It’s possible that you could be offered a job that can be done from home. This might be an ideal way of working that gives you greater flexibility in your overall life.

Sport Stosur extends miserable run with Dubai exit By Matt Smith SAMANTHA Stosur’s season of woe continued at the Dubai Championships when she crashed out in the quarter-finals following a 6-2 6-4 defeat by Italian Roberta Vinci. Stosur has lost more matches than she has won this year, with her win-loss record standing at 5-7 after she produced an error-strewn performance under the searing desert sun that left her frequently yelling in frustration. Vinci, 30, broke in the opening game and was always in control against a player who has failed to win a title since triumphing at the US Open in September 2011. The Italian has now beaten top-10

ranked players in successive matches she defeated Angelique Kerber earlier in the week. World number nine Stosur towered over the diminutive Vinci, but she was guilty of trying to be too aggressive, clubbing a succession of backhand returns into the net. Vinci, who with partner Errani are the top-ranked doubles pairing, is a percentage player, relying more on her opponent’s mistakes than going for winners herself and Stosur’s approach played into the Italian’s hands. Serving at 4-2 down, Stosur ran to the net but Vinci, world No.17, played an angled backhand dropshot winner for a break point. The Italian duly converted after Stosur,

backpedalling from the net, hit a smash long. Stosur then surrendered the set with another errant backhand. The Australian broke for the first time early in the second set and also changed tactics, slowing the game down and matching Vinci’s backhand slice. But the Italian responded with an immediate break back, taking Stosur to deuce before the latter struck successive forehands wide. Stosur was frequently left stranded in mid-court, either arriving too late to block off Vinci’s passing shots or coming forward too soon and allowing herself to be lobbed. The Italian broke again for a 4-3 lead after another Stosur error and served out the match.

AB de Villiers, Amla keep the South Africans out of trouble Pakistan’s Rahat takes three wickets By Nick Said

IN BRIEF

AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla produced knocks in the 90s after South Africa had been in early trouble on the first day of the thir d Test against Pakistan yesterday. De Villiers was on 98 not out and Vernon Philander unbeaten on 45 as South Africa reached 334 for six at the close of play at Centurion. Choosing to bat first, openers Graeme Smith (five) and Alviro Petersen (10) struggled as Pakistan’s bowlers used the seamer-friendly conditions to their advantage inside the first hour to leave the hosts on 38-2. Petersen’s miserable series continued when he was trapped plum lbw by Rahat Ali, who returned to the side after missing the second test in Cape Town. Smith battled for 47 minutes before he became

De Villiers plays a shot during the first day of the third Test match between South Africa and Pakistan yesterday at Super Sport Park in Centurion debutant Ehsan Adil’s first wicket in test cricket with just the third ball of the seamer’s spell when a touch of away movement found

his edge and looped towards Younus Khan at second slip. Faf du Plessis (29) came in at number four in place of

the injured Jacques Kallis (calf strain) and after a slow start crashed three boundaries off one Adil over to get his innings up and running.

Adil got his revenge after lunch though, inducing an edge to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed after the batsman advanced down the track to the medium pacer. It ended a partnership of 69 between Amla and Du Plessis that helped put the hosts back on track. De Villiers put on 79 with Amla before the latter fell just eight short of what would have been a deserving century. Amla’s elegant 92 came from 128 balls, but his innings was ended as he attempted to cut a wide delivery from Rahat and got a faint edge through to Sarfraz. Shortly afterwards Dean Elgar (seven) was trapped lbw by Rahat and Robin Peterson, who had looked untroubled as he breezed to 28, was run out by a direct hit from Mohammad Irfan. Rahat, in his second test match, was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers as he collected three for 95. Pakistan lost Adil late in the day with a leg injury after he had bowled the first ball of a new spell. South Africa lead the three-match series 2-0 having won the first Test in Johannesburg by 211 runs, before completing the series win with a four-wicket victory in Cape Town.

Bolt to race over 150m on Copacabana Beach By Andrew Downie OLYMPIC sprint champion Usain Bolt will compete in a 150 metres race on Brazil’s Copacabana Beach next month against three other sprinters in what the Jamaican called a “street meet” type showdown. Organisers are to build a track on the famous sands for the March 31 race although they did not say whether it would have a bend. The 150 metres race is an unusual distance that rarely features in top competitions. Bolt set a world best for the event in Manchester in 2009. A six-time Olympic gold medallist, Bolt, 26, holds the 100 metres world record of 9.58 seconds and the 200m record of 19.19, and was part of the Jamaica team that set the 4x100 record of 36.84. The race in Rio is only the second international event Bolt has confirmed for 2013. He recently announced he will compete in the 200m at Oslo’s Bislett Games Diamond League meeting on June 13. He ran a 400m recently in Jamaica. Rio de Janeiro will host the next Olympic Games in 2016 and Bolt has said he wishes to compete here.

Patriots’ Dennard guilty of assaulting policeman

Aussie swimmers used a Heat win ninth straight, sedative in bonding sessions tighten grip on East

NEW England Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard faced up to six years in prison after he was found guilty this week of assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest last year, court officials said. Dennard, 23, who is scheduled to be sentenced on April 11, could escape jail time if he is given probation for the felony charge and misdemeanor. Dennard was charged with punching a policeman outside a bar in Lincoln, Nebraska, last April 21 just days before the University of Nebraska player entered the 2012 NFL Draft. The incident led to Dennard slipping to the seventh round of the draft, where he was selected by the Patriots.

JAMES Magnussen and his team-mates from the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay squad have admitted using sedative Stilnox in a bonding session before the London Olympics. “We stand here today to admit that we took Stilnox following a day of bonding for the relay team at the training camp in Manchester,” the Olympic silver medallist and his team-mates Matt Targett, Eamon Sullivan, James Roberts,Cameron McEvoy and Tommaso D’Orsogna said. The sedative was banned by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) just before the Games and the athletes now face sanctions from the governing body for breaching their Olympic team membership agreement.

THE Miami Heat tightened their grip on the Eastern Conference by routing the Chicago Bulls 86-67. With the NBA’s trade deadline passing without any change among top contenders, LeBron James missed just four shots while compiling 26 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists as Miami won their season-high ninth straight and stretched their conference lead to 5 1/2 games. “We’re putting together some good basketball right now,” James told reporters. “If we don’t turn the ball over, we get good shots at the rim, we have a good chance to win.”

Lawes aiming to stop French ‘bullies’ in Twickenham clash

Champions Wales remain wary of Italy threat

England’s abrasive intent to tackle the French head-on

By Andrew Baldock

By Alex Lowe, COURTNEY Lawes is ready to strike fear into the French ‘bully boys’ when he is unleashed from the England back row for the first time. Lawes will line up at blindside flanker today as one of three changes made by head coach Stuart Lancaster, all of which signal England’s abrasive intent to tackle the French head-on. Dylan Hartley has replaced Tom Youngs at hooker and Manu Tuilagi returns at outside centre, where he will start opposite Mathieu Bastareaud in a seismic midfield showdown. Lawes has been an effective high-impact replacement for England so far this RBS 6 Nations. Now he is ready to set the tone from the outset at Twickenham. “That is so important. It’s one of the main reasons I’ve been put in the team, to bring that physicality because the French are going to bring it as well,” Lawes said. “You can see from their pack and centres they want to try and bully us. It’s really important we put a stop to that as soon as possible.” Lawes relishes his role as England’s enforcer. He wants to be the player opponents fear most when they step onto the field. The 23-year-old has been

Hard man: Courtney Lawes is relishing his role as England’s enforcer. He says he wants to be the player opponents fear most when they step onto the field urged by his Twitter followers to repeat the brutal tackle which flattened French scrum-half Morgan Parra in the 2011 European Challenge Cup final. The video of that tackle has had nearly 100,000 views on YouTube. “You take your shots as they come. If I get a shot I’ll certainly take it,” said Lawes, who believes memories of that incident could prey on Parra’s mind. “As much as people don’t like to admit it, there are people that you don’t want to run at and you will al-

ways be aware of as a player when they are in the opposite team. “I’d like to be one of those people but I don’t know if I am. “I’m not going to big myself up or anything, but I’d certainly aspire to be one of those people that you have to watch out for.” Although Lawes has never lined up in the back row for England, he has recent experience playing there for Northampton. He averages around four more tackles a game than when he plays in the second row.

“His line-speed and physicality as a defender, his acceleration on to the ball as a carrier shows me he is ready,” Lancaster said. “From a set-piece point of view we have a 6ft 8in guy at the back of the lineout. Physically he is in the best shape I have seen him.” Tuilagi, England’s powerhouse centre, is the one player Lawes does not enjoy running into. Between them, England will look to shut down the French at source. England were successful in that regard against Ire-

land’s more artistic midfield of Brian O’Driscoll and Gordon D’Arcy. Now they are ready to contain the power of Bastareaud and Wesley Fofana. “A big hit is all about timing. For me in any game I hope those moments come,” said Tuilagi, who will reprise his centre partnership with England’s defence captain Brad Barritt. “This is another challenge for me and Brad to keep us safe. The French team is fantastic. They are some huge men and there will be some collisions everywhere.”

Button admits McLaren struggling

The Englishman fears McLaren will be uncompetitive

JENSON Button says McLaren are struggling to get to grips with the new car that carries their World Championship hopes this season. McLaren chose to make more overall changes to their car’s design philosophy than other teams in an attempt to ensure better performance. But Button says this means the team are still trying to establish how it works. “We don’t know where we are and there’s no point trying to compare us to other people. We’ve got to sort out our own issues and get the best out of the car,” he said. “It’s been very difficult to understand where the car is. At times it feels good; at others it doesn’t,” he said. “A lot of that is basically understanding the way it’s working and making sure it’s working the way we expect it.

Some of the time that hasn’t been the case. That’s why it’s been a tricky winter so far. “But there are times when the car’s working pretty well. “At Jerez (at the previous test) we showed pace, but we also showed that we don’t have pace at other times. “We don’t know where we are and there’s no point trying to compare us to other people. We’ve got to sort out our own issues and get the best out of the car.” Button said McLaren were paying for their decision to make significant changes to last year’s car concept rather than taking a more evolutionary approach as other teams have, particularly Red Bull and Lotus. But he said it was the right decision because it meant the car had greater long-term potential. “If we started this year with

last year’s car with a few changes to it, and we’d developed that car into 2013, I think we could have started with a very good car at the first race,” he said. “Whether it would be better than the (new car for 2013) MP4-28, I don’t know. I think it would be a very strong car. “But I think after three or four races you would realise that you’re at the end of the development curve with it. “For us, it was important to change the car over the winter so we could see a new development direction over the course of the year. “It’s a long season at 19 races. It’s about being strong over the whole season, not just the first couple of races. “I am still hoping that we are competitive in Melbourne. It’s a circuit I love and where I’ve gone well for several years.”

WALES wing Alex Cuthbert expects the Italian team that turned up spectacularly against France three weeks ago to reappear at the Stadio Olimpico today. Whether or not the Azzurri can hit such heights against Wales remains to be seen, especially as they will be without their suspended skipper and best player Sergio Parisse. And they are also on the back of a demoralising 3410 defeat against Scotland, but Cuthbert - a try-scorer in last season’s RBS 6 Nations clash between the countries - is braced for an intense examination. “They showed what they can do at top level against France,” he said. “They will be the same as they were against France at home, and it will be a tough challenge. We will have to front-up.” Wales, though, are in a much better place than when the Six Nations campaign started, having ended a demoralising run of eight successive defeats by beating France. Indeed, they could still retain their title with successive victories over Italy, Scotland and England. Interim head coach Rob Howley reacted to the Paris win by announcing an unchanged team within 72 hours of that game finishing, and Cuthbert added: “Morale is really high. “The boys thought early selection was a good call. The side has been together pretty much for the past two weeks. We’ve done a lot of sessions together as a team. “We tried to play a bit of rugby against France, and with the confidence of getting that win and putting all those losses behind us hopefully we can play the way we did in the Six Nations last year.” Cuthbert has claimed four touchdowns in Wales’ last half-dozen Six Nations Tests, and he is enjoying a roving role encouraged by Howley and his coaching staff. “In some games you don’t get the ball as much,” he said. “But Rob gives me a free role to go and get the ball as much as I can and get as many touches as I can, and that will be the case against Italy, looking for mis-matches against their forwards. Victory today would keep Wales in title contention, although hopes of silverware wil be out of their hands unless unbeaten England lose somewhere down the line. “The championship is definitely possible, but we are taking one game at a time,” Cuthbert added. “Momentum-wise we need a win against Italy on the back of the win in France.”

Sport DERBY FEATURES MAVERICK STRIKER MARIO BALOTELLI FACING HIS FORMER CLUB

Stuttering Barca seek Sevilla boost in La Liga By Iain Rogers

I’m back: the wildly unpredictable ‘Super Mario’ will be facing Inter, where he spent four seasons and made his top-flight debut

Unhappy Inter face buoyant Milan By Brian Homewood RESURGENT AC Milan, buoyed up by their win over Barcelona, meet an Inter Milan side mired in a midseason crisis in tomorrow night’s Serie A derby which also features maverick striker Mario Balotelli facing his former club. The mood in the two camps could not be more different with Inter, who at one stage were one point behind leaders Juventus, in a slump and their rivals on a high after Wednesday’s 2-0 win in the Champions League. Milan have also enjoyed a resurgence in the league, helped greatly by the signing of maverick striker Balotelli who has scored four goals in

three games since his move from Manchester City. The wildly unpredictable ‘Super Mario’ will be facing the club where he spent four seasons and made his topflight debut. Inter coach Andrea Stramaccioni has emerged victorious from both his previous meetings with AC Milan and badly needs a third win to rescue his side’s season. Cagliari will have to host Torino behind closed doors after the latest saga involved their scandal-plagued Is Arenas stadium while leaders Juventus are at home to lowly but improving Siena. The Milan rivals have undergone a role reversal since the start of the year with AC Milan, whose early-season

struggles led to weekly speculation over the future of coach Massimiliano Allegri, now ahead of Inter. Milan have taken 23 points from 10 games since the start of December and are third with 44 points, one ahead of Inter. Inter have taken 15 points in the same period and have suffered three bad defeats since the start of the season, at Udinese, struggling Siena and a 4-1 thrashing by Fiorentina last Sunday. Former youth team coach Stramaccioni was promoted to Inter coach late last term and their 4-2 win over Milan ended their rivals’ hopes of winning the title. They also won this season’s first meeting 1-0. “The good and bad thing

about being coach of Inter is that this pressure is on me from the first day I took charge of this great team,” said Stramaccioni. “If a coach at this level thinks about these things, then he is finished before he even begins,” added the 37year-old. “The club is working on the renewal of the team and this is only the first year of that process.” Cagliari have agreed to host Torino behind closed doors after president Massimo Cellino was arrested last Friday on charges of embezzlement and false representation over the rebuilding of the stadium. The Sardinians moved to Is Arenas, which had previously hosted third-tier matches

in the 1980s, at the start of this season but, with only one permanent stand, they have had trouble from the outset. Three temporary stands were built on the other sides of the pitch but the side’s opening match against Atalanta was staged behind closed doors after local authorities ruled that it was not ready. Juventus, four points clear at the top, face relegationthreatened Siena while second-placed Napoli have a difficult match at mid-table Udinese. Tonight’s match between strugglers Palermo and Genoa features two sides who have employed six coaches between them so far this season.

Beckham to steal the limelight as PSG take on Marseille By Julien Pretot

The former England captain is expected to make his eagerly-awaited debut for PSG

WHETHER he plays or not, David Beckham alone will generate more headlines than the clash against Marseille as the former England captain makes his first appearance at the Parc des Princes tomorrow night. The 37-year-old midfielder, past his prime, will be presented as a Paris St Germain player to the crowd before the leaders take on thirdplaced OM, who trail by five points. His celebrity lifestyle epitomises PSG’s lavish spending policy as the Qatar-backed club have poured over €200 million into transfers in the last two years, in sharp contrast with Marseille’s frugal philosophy. Beckham’s every move from the five-star Bristol Ho-

tel in Paris has been chased by motor bike-mounted paparazzis and for once, the OM fans’ bus might not be the most-awaited vehicle around the Parc des Princes. While Beckham will be welcomed by some 47,000 fans, Marseille players seem unfazed by the former Manchester United man’s presence. “He is a great player. When I was a kid, I would watch him on TV, I saw him do great things and win trophies but he is not my idol,” OM striker Andre Ayew told the club’s website. PSG, who will meet Marseille again at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday in a French Cup last 16 game, are much more formidable as a collective unit according to Ayew. “In the French league, there

is no other team like Paris,” the Ghana striker said. “They have very good players who are experienced. And they play better as a team. Little by little, it clicks. They can make some damage in France and in Europe but they are still beatable.” Sochaux upset PSG 3-2 last Sunday, ending their nine-match unbeaten run in Ligue 1. Beckham, if coach Carlo Ancelotti decides he is fit to start or play part of the game, will be used as a defensive midfielder or on the right flank. “He’ll bring us experience, quality and professionalism. Those are things we need,” Ancelotti told reporters. “Our current tactical system gives us confidence and won’t be changed for him. He can play central midfield or on the right.”

BARCELONA have stumbled just as the season enters a critical phase but get a chance to return to winning ways and strengthen their grip on top spot when erratic Sevilla visit the Camp Nou in La Liga tonight. Wednesday’s shock 2-0 reverse at AC Milan, when the determined and wellorganised Italians snuffed out Barca’s normally lethal attacking threat, left Tito Vilanova’s side in real danger of an early Champions League exit. They host the Serie A side for the last 16, return leg on March 12 but before that are at home to Real Madrid in Tuesday’s King’s Cup semifinal second leg with the arch-rivals tied at 1-1 after last month’s game in the Spanish capital. Barca visit Real’s Bernabeu stadium in La Liga four days later with another league match at home to bottom side Deportivo La Coruna before the Milan showdown in Europe’s elite club competition. Barca have drawn two and lost one in their last five outings in all competitions and lacked a cutting edge against a resolute Milan despite hogging possession in their customary style. World Player of the Year Lionel Messi, who has netted an incredible 37 goals in 24 La Liga appearances this term and was top scorer in the Champions League the past four seasons, barely threatened and Barca mustered only two shots on target. While they are flying high in La Liga, the lack of an effective ‘Plan B’ to break down Milan’s resistance is something they will need to address if they are to secure a third European crown in five years. “Physically we were not good,” midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who was replaced on the hour after struggling to make an impact, told reporters. “They were strong and they caused us damage,” the former Arsenal captain added. “We have to improve and focus on the return leg and on a week coming up now which is crucial for the season.” Sevilla’s form has picked up since they sacked coach Michel last month and replaced him with Unai Emery and they still have a chance of qualifying for Europe next season. With 14 games left, Barca have a 12-point lead over second-placed Atletico Madrid, who host a resurgent Espanyol tomorrow night. Champions Real, whose chances of a second straight Spanish league title were dashed by defeats to rivals including Sevilla, Malaga and Real Betis, play at Depor tonight. Real sit four points behind Atletico in third place.

Sport Wenger’s desire burns bright despite dim hopes

Holders Atletico out, Chelsea and Spurs leave it late

By Sonia Oxley

Liverpool eliminated, Newcastle through By Tony Jimenez HOLDERS Atletico Madrid were sent spinning out of the Europa League by Russian outsiders Rubin Kazan while Champions League winners Chelsea scored with almost the final kick to scrape into the last 16. Another Russian club, Zenit St Petersburg, knocked out five-time European champions Liverpool on the away goals rule while little-known Czech side Viktoria Plzen surprisingly won their tie against Napoli who are riding high in Serie A. Atletico slumped to a shock 2-0 home defeat by Rubin in Madrid last week and were ousted 2-1 on aggregate even though Radamel Falcao’s 84th-minute strike earned them a 1-0 win in the return match in Russia. “If we had scored earlier we would have given ourselves more of a chance but even then we still had opportunities to get a second goal,” Falcao told the club website. Rubin will meet another Spanish club, Levante, in the last 16, after the Valenciabased side won 1-0 at Olympiakos to knock the Greeks out 4-0 on aggregate. Champions League dropouts Chelsea, 1-0 up from the first leg, went behind in the 17th minute against Sparta Prague. Stamford Bridge fell almost silent when David Lafata belted the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

Fernando Torres had another less than distinguished game in attack for Chelsea and produced a hat-trick of near-misses in the first half with his right foot, left foot and head. The misfiring Spaniard then failed to beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation in the second period before substitute Eden Hazard came to the rescue, cutting in from the left to send a searing leftfoot drive into the top corner of the net. “We left it late and sometimes that’s the best way,” said captain John Terry after the 1-1 draw gave Chelsea a 2-1 victory on aggregate. “It wasn’t our best performance but at least we are through to the next round. “It was a great goal from Eden. It’s great to have players like him on the bench who can come on and turn a game.” Chelsea next play Steaua Bucharest who edged past former European champions Ajax Amsterdam 4-2 on penalties after their clash ended 2-2 on aggregate. Liverpool’s 150th appearance in Europe was an unhappy affair as they went out to Zenit on away goals after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate. Luis Suarez netted twice from direct free kicks to help Liverpool record a 3-1 secondleg win in front of a typically noisy Anfield crowd but Zenit hung on to set up a meeting with Swiss club Basel who put out Ukrainians Dnipro.

“It was absolutely breathtaking how everyone came together,” said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers of the atmosphere generated by the home fans. “We were very proud of the club and the players. They showed why they’re part of the world’s best football family.” Brazil striker Hulk, who also scored in the first leg, grabbed the all-important away goal for Zenit after 19 minutes when he dispossessed former England defender Jamie Carragher 45 metres out before running on to slip the ball past keeper Pepe Reina. Tottenham Hotspur, winners of the competition when it was called the UEFA Cup in 1972 and 1984, looked to be heading out on away goals against Lyon until Moussa Dembele struck with a venomous left-foot drive in the 90th minute to secure a 1-1 draw on the night and a 3-2 aggregate triumph. Maxime Gonalons had put Lyon 1-0 up in the second leg with a deft close-range header following a free kick. Three Spurs fans were hurt in clashes in Lyon on the eve of the game. The Londoners now play Inter in a mouthwatering rematch of their 2010 Champions League group stage tie. Fredy Guarin scored twice and Marco Benassi was also on target as Inter, UEFA Cup winners in 1991, 1994 and 1998, won 3-0 at Cluj to breeze past the Romanians 5-0 on aggregate.

Laudrup reveals his influences By Andrew Gwilym

Michael Laudrup is on the brink of delivering Swansea’s first major piece of silverware in the League Cup final

MICHAEL Laudrup has revealed how the genius of Johan Cruyff has helped him put Swansea on the brink of winning their first major piece of silverware. The Dane will lead the Swans out for tomorrow’s Capital One Cup final against Bradford at Wembley having enjoyed a fantastic first season as manager at the Liberty Stadium, building on the foundations laid by Roberto Martinez, Paulo Sousa and Brendan Rodgers before him. The south Wales club sit in the top half of the Premier League table, and have beaten Arsenal and Chelsea among others this season. Their performances have seen Laudrup linked with Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City, and he is set to discuss an extension to his Swansea contract.

Laudrup places his managerial abilities down to learning from the greats he played under, and there were none as influential as the man in charge when he helped Barcelona win their first European Cup at Wembley in 1992: Cruyff. “On the pitch everyone knows my five years with Cruyff in Barcelona were great years, there are a lot of things from the training I did with him that I am using now,” he said. “There are also elements from Giovanni Trapattoni while I was in Italy and (former Denmark boss) Sepp Piontek. “Those are the three I mention when people ask who had the most influence on my career - so we have a German, an Italian and a Dutchman who was from the school of ‘Total Football’ and was one of the top five players ever. “They were three very different personalities, and three

very different ways of seeing the game, but they had a big impact on me.” Laudrup’s calm demeanour has been one of his greatest strengths, and he does not plan to deviate into attempting any stirring rhetoric when it comes to Sunday’s team meeting. “The tactical meeting on Sunday could last just two or three minutes, you don’t have to talk about motivation, or what it means to the team, the club, the fans, or even Wales as a country,” he said. “Telling the players the lineup takes 15 seconds and then we can talk about what we have to do to move this team around and what we have to avoid.” One man who will not be in Laudrup’s line-up will be defender Chico Flores, who has failed to recover from the ruptured ankle ligaments he suffered in the win over QPR.

ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger adopted a fresh approach yesterday to the persistent questions over his future, swapping tetchiness for humour as he stressed he was committed to getting the best out of his beleaguered side. The Frenchman has endured a series of back-page headlines to forget this week after a 3-1 home defeat by Bayern Munich in their Champions League last-16 first leg followed a humiliating 1-0 loss to second-tier Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup. He snapped his way through a news conference on Monday after what he said was incorrect information that he had agreed a two-year contract extension but yesterday was in a calmer mood when asked whether he had been unfairly scrutinised this week. “It’s not down to me to judge, my responsibility is to keep the guidelines and to guide the team and the club into what I think is right,” he told a news conference. “I will not come out with my feelings because that is not my job. I feel what is important for me is to focus on the next game and try to give my best like all the players.” Demonstrating he was still as motivated as ever after being in the job since 1996, he issued a challenge to one reporter in jest. “I do think that spark is nothing to do with the length of your life. It’s just that’s how you are. You are motivated by how much you want to win and how much you win,” he said. “If I go out now and play with you one against one you will see that I will beat you and at least if I don’t manage to beat you I will want to beat you so that will not change as long as I can move. While he might have made time for jokes, his team’s season has become no laughing matter. Any realistic chances of silverware have vanished, leaving the north London club trophyless for an eighth season, and the only sliver of redemption would be finishing in the top four of the Premier League to secure a Champions League berth. They host relegation candidates Aston Villa this afternoon (5pm) seeking to avoid a third successive home defeat. Asked if he had felt like quitting this week, Wenger was emphatic. “Never, not one second,” he said. “I have a contract until the end of 2014 and at the moment we are on a shortterm plan. I have been here for a long time and have to consider what I want to do. That will be decided in 2014, not before.”

Once again the elite World Golf Championship (WGC) event lived up to its reputation for wild unpredictability, with three-time champion Tiger Woods losing in the first round

Woods and McIlroy sent packing on day of upsets By Mark Lamport-Stokes WORLD number one Rory McIlroy and three-time winner Tiger Woods were both sent packing in stunning fashion in the snow-delayed first round of the WGCAccenture Match Play Championship. Northern Irishman McIlroy, a losing finalist last year, was ousted 1-up by his good friend Shane Lowry of Ireland while Woods was eliminated 2&1 by fellow American Charles Howell in fading light at Dove Mountain. Once again the elite World Golf Championship (WGC) event lived up to its reputation for wild unpredictability and there were 14 upsets from the 30 matches which finished at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club. Two matches were completed yesterday, a knock-on effect from Wednesday when just three-and-a-half hours of play was possible because of driving rain, sleet and then snow. The premature departure of our apMcIlroy in his first PGA Tour tunpearance of the year was stunlieved ning, but Lowry always believed he had the game to pull offf an upset win. d “Deep down I knew I could beat him,” the 25-year-old Irishman said after chipping in for birdie at the 11th and 12th to take control of the match. “I’m not here for no reason. I’m not here to make up the numbers. “It was a bit of an upand-down match, and I’m not going to lie, we

didn’t play our best golf. But that’s match play. I’m happy to get the win, and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.” Woods, Match Play champion in 2003, 2004 and 2008, was eliminated at the first hurdle for a third time at the event. “I played well, I really did,” said the world number two. “I hit a lot of good shots out there. I didn’t make a bogey out there. Unfortunately it’s the nature of the format, and I’m not advancing.” Howell, who has played Woods several times in practice, was delighted to beat the former world number one for the first time. “I knew I had to play extremely well to have a chance, and I still kept waiting for that Tiger moment,” said Howell, who set up the win with birdies at the 15th, where he nearly holed out with a wedge, and the 16th. “I had nothing to lose coming into this match. Every time Tiger Woods tees it ma up, he’s a marked man and he’s got the bulls-eye on o his back. It shows you that matc match play is crazy. I did have to play a goo good round.” In other u upsets, PGA Tour rookie Russell H Henley beat in-form South Africa African Charl Schwartzel 1-up and Spaniard S Rafael CabreraBe Bello came from two down w with seven holes left to scrape past British world number eight Lee Westwood after 19 holes.

The premature departure of world No.1 Rory McIlroy in his first PGA Tour appearance of the year was stunning

WO months ago few could have imagined a Premier League clash between Manchester City and Chelsea would have little bearing on the title race yet tomorrow’s fixture (3.30pm) is likely to be eclipsed by top against bottom battles. With 12 games left, champions City are 12 points adrift of leaders Manchester United, who visit bottom side Queens Park Rangers today (5pm), while third-placed Chelsea are a further four points behind. With their title challenges all but over and Champions League spots looking likely, the focus has switched to respective managers Roberto Mancini and Rafael Benitez, who know that any defeat can harm their job prospects long-term. Benitez is only in charge at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season but his hopes of a more permanent role seem doomed because of his unpopularity with the fans. Meanwhile, media reports have speculated that Mancini could be axed in May. Yesterday, the Italian swore in front of reporters when asked about speculation over his future. After a brief pause and a laugh, Mancini gave a more thorough response and said: “I cannot continue to answer about this every week. “We’ve another two months. You’ll know then but I can’t continue with this.” Chelsea skipper John Terry, desperate to get back in the first team for league matches after a spell on the bench following injury, believes the club have plenty to play for and not just in the FA Cup and Europa League. “This season has been a little disappointing, we’ve let Man U get so many points ahead of us, but everyone is dropping points and we can still easily get second place,” he said. “If we can go on a run, with the two boys back from the African Nations (Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel), we have a real chance.” The Sun newspaper was forced to publish an apology on Wednesday over an incorrect story about a bust-up between Terry and Benitez but whether the former England captain starts at City

Not good enough: Roberto Mancini’s men find themselves a massive 12 points behind rivals Man United at the top tomorrow remains to be seen. Leaders United in contrast look a picture of harmony having not been beaten since a dead rubber Champions League group game at home to CFR Cluj in early December. That cannot be said for QPR, who sit seven points from the safety zone after a 4-1 thumping at Swansea City two weekends ago.

MAGICAL Harry Redknapp’s side need to conjure a magical performance at home to United and hope Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have begun to take their foot off the gas, with Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones doubtful with a sinus infection and ankle injury respectively. Another intriguing clash is fifth-placed Arsenal’s home match with strugglers Aston Villathis afternoon (5pm). A 3-1 home defeat by Bayern Munich in Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg has left nervous Arsenal on the brink of missing out on a trophy for the eighth season in a row and grabbing fourth spot is now crucial. Arsenal trail fourth-placed

rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who visit West Ham United on Monday (10pm), by four points in the race for the Champions League playoff spot. Arsene Wenger’s position as manager could look even more brittle if they lose to Villa, who are a place and a point above the drop zone after a 2-1 win over West Ham United last time out. Villa boss Paul Lambert has called on his players to gear up for ‘12 cup finals’ in the remaining games of the season, meaning Arsenal face a real battle against their youthful opponents and a crowd who have become increasingly fractious. Villa could profit from one or both of lowly Newcastle United and Southampton dropping points when they meet on Sunday afternoon (3.30pm), before Swansea take on fourth tier Bradford City in the Capital One (League) Cup final (6pm).
