URDERS, arsons, robberies and blackmail all increased last year compared to 2011 with serious crime on an upward trajectory since 2009, the police chief said yesterday.

But there was a record low in road deaths, while break-ins and thefts were also down, the chief, Michalis Papageorgiou said during a media briefing of how the force did in 2012.

Last year, 18 people were murdered with the police solving 11 of those cases, a noticeable hike from 2011 when eight people were killed and only three of those cases were solved by the police.

The chief said that six murders in 2012 were the result of arguments, while he attributed five to differences among members of the underground.

The chief became animated when talking about the murders over arguments and family differences.

“Several Cypriots have become ill-tempered, they have become aggressive, arbitrary, they have become violent [people] who easily take the law into their own hands,” Papageorgiou said.

“Financial interests often become more important than life itself,” he added.

“Why?” Papageorgiou said that the debt crisis, which started being felt in 2009 coincided with a rise in serious crime as numbers began to climb in that year.

In 2009 there were 7,094

cases of serious crime known to the police, and 7,977 last year. The jobless rate has also been rising during the same period.

Robberies and blackmail climbed to 173 last year but only 70 have been solved, compared with 137 in 2011, out of which 58 were solved.

Arsons – which Papageorgiou said were crimes of intimidation driven by financial reasons –increased by almost 29 per cent in a year, from 163 in 2011, to 210 in 2012, but only 24 were solved last year versus 18 in 2011. The chief blamed an inadequate system that makes it hard for people to get the money owed to them as the “operative factor” leading to an increase in robberies and blackmail.

But “despite what is publicly heard,” breakins have been reduced by 12.6 per cent, going down from 3,379 in 2011 to 2,954 in 2012, though only about 32 per cent were solved in both years, the chief said.

A number of police campaigns have been urging people to be careful to protect their homes, and install security measures.

Other thefts were down from 1,687 in 2011 to 1,548 with the police solving more cases last year when they crossed 532 thefts from their to-solve list.

A total of 53 per cent of perpetrators caught last year were non-Cypriots.

Probe ordered into leak at Central Bank

By George Psyllides POLICE said yesterday they were investigating the leak of confidential information from the Central Bank, which reportedly concerned the European Central Bank’s (ECB) decision to cut emergency liquidity assistance to Cyprus if no memorandum was agreed by January 20.

Police chief Michalis Papageorgiou said they had received written instructions from the attorney-general to investigate a complaint filed by the Central Bank concerning the leak of sensitive information. “It is a serious case according to the correspondence we have received and our aim is to conclude (the investigation) as soon as possible,” Papageorgiou

said. Opposition daily Alithia suggested that the investigation was undertaken at the behest of ruling AKEL, in a bid to put main opposition DISY leader and presidential frontrunner Nicos Anastasiades on the spot.

DISY was aware of the European Central Bank (ECB) decision to turn off the taps of emergency liquidity assistance to Cyprus banks if no memorandum was agreed by January 20.

On November 16 Anastasiades penned a stern letter to President Demetris Christofias, asking him to assume his responsibilities and warning him that if he allowed the economy to collapse he would not be just politically responsible, but could also face charges of criminal negligence.

CyTA shows off its tele capabilities

By Peter Stevenson TELECOMMUNICATIONS giant CyTA flexed its muscles yesterday, presenting its teleconference capabilities with the ‘Telepresence’ service.

Attending the demonstration which also celebrated Cyprus’ successful EU presidency last year, was government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou and Deputy Minister for European Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis.

On the other end of the teleconference was Cyprus’ permanent representative at the EU, Kornelius Korneliou in Brussells with other contributions to the conference from Cyprus’ ambassador in Athens, Iosif Iosif.

In his speech, head of CyTA, Stathis Kittis expressed his pride and joy at the successful nature of Cyprus’ presidency of the EU. “We feel very satisfied as we, CyTA, contributed to the successful presidency,” he said. “We supported the state in a vital field in this day and age, which is communications,” he added.

The support and products given to the government by CyTA included high-speed internet connections to enable high definition teleconferences to take place in Brussels, the Presidential Palace and at the Filoxenia Conference Centre in Nicosia. Smart-phones were given to members of the team of employees and volunteers of the EU presidency office as well as laptops to aid in the updating of the presidency website. CyTA also increased the number of Wi-Fi spots around the capital to provide better service for those visiting the island.

“The success of Cyprus’ presidency was down to a huge effort made by the whole state mechanism,” Stefanou said in his speech. “We proved that there are no big or small presidencies but only successful and not-so successful ones, proving our success,” he added. “The government was vindicated in its decision to trust CyTA with the big responsibility of technologically covering the presidency as it proved to be more than capable,” he continued. “This is the reason that we cannot privatise the organisation as doing so will reduce its productivity,” he concluded. He was referring to pressure from Cyprus’ EU partners to privatise semigovernment bodies as part of the island’s bailout deal.

On his behalf, Mavroyiannis expressed his delight at the success of CyTA’s contribution to Cyprus’ presidency, praising the ‘Telepresence’ system as the most modern form of teleconferencing. “This system has made the distance between Nicosia and Brussels irrelevant,” he remarked.

Kittis described the manner with which the system worked.

“One of the systems biggest advantages is that those using it can see those on the other line in life-size and high definition, and even though they may be in a different country it gives you the feel that they are in the same room,” he said.

“The most important advantage is that it can save time and money.”

DISY slammed the investigation, saying it reeked of police-state and intimidation, and “cannot be tolerated.” Party spokesman Haris Georgiades said it was well known that Anastasiades had excellent contacts abroad and was fully informed about developments that concerned Cyprus.

Instead of harassing and intimidating workers the Central Bank management should say “how we reached the ECB decision that put Cyprus under suffocating pressure (and) what did they do to preempt this decision?” Georgiades said.

The spokesman questioned the Central Bank’s handling and wondered whether it tried to hide the issue “despite the dangers for our country.” DIKO MP Nicolas Papadopoulos suggested Central Bank Governor Panicos Demetriades was more interested in “imposing a regime of terror” at a time when the country was fighting to convince foreigners about the transparency of its banks.

Papadopoulos said the ECB had drafted report that said “Republic of Cyprus authorities do not cooperate with us” but instead of being bothered about that, Demetriades was only interested in the person who dared leak to politicians.

to other services and 482 people had face-to-face meetings with police officers. Meanwhile, the number of people who died in road accidents fell to an all-time low of 51 last year compared to 71 in 2011, a reduction of 28.2 per cent, Papageorgiou said.

The average number of yearly deaths is 103, measured since the inception of the republic in 1960 – the breadth of the statistical data available to police.

The total number of road accidents has also been falling,

from 1,624 (including victims) in 2011, to 1,426 (with victims) last year.

However, 26 people who died in a road accident were not wearing a seat belt or helmet.

And of the 51 who died, 14 were younger than 25 years of age, keeping the proportion of deaths in the under-25s stable at about 28 per cent of all road deaths in 2011 and 2012.

The police who have been conducting fewer alcohol checks, have nonetheless been filing more reports because “of targeted checks,”

Papageorgiou said. In 2012, a total of 11,261 drunk drivers were caught, an increase of almost 33 per cent since 2011 when 8,479 drunk drivers were caught. The police have also been filing more speeding offences – 95,114 in 2011 and 116,011 in 2012, an increase of 22 per cent. In total, more traffic offences were registered, bringing up the figure to 270,640 in 2012 compared with 246,085 in 2011.

Because of austerity measures, police had their budget reduced by €18 million and had 365 fewer members of staff but “nonetheless took up an increased work load with Cyprus’ presidency (of the EU council),” the chief said.

Papageorgiou hailed the force’s job, despite the austerity.

State officials have their travel perks cut DIKO says THE government has suspended state officials’ perks such as flying business class as part of a raft of austerity measures to shore up the economy, it emerged yesterday.

According to a circular issued by the finance ministry permanent secretary, a number of state officials will have to learn to live without flying business or club class while certain overseas al-

lowances have been reduced. The circular suspended the right to use business or club class with the exception of transatlantic flights.

It does not affect the President of the Republic and the House President.

Until recently, those eligible to fly business or club were the attorney-general and his deputy, the president and judges of the Supreme Court,

the chairman of the civil service commission, ministers, auditor-general, head of the education commission, district court presidents, permanent secretaries, and a few other officials.

The circular also cuts overseas allowances in half in the instance of the beneficiaries being provided with free meals at the expense of the Cypriot government or the hosting authority.

Lillikas camp ‘in a panic’

By Stefanos Evripidou PRESIDENTIAL candidate Nicos Anastasiades yesterday disclosed his personal assets, and those of his wife, adding up to over €2.3m.

The total sum of his personal wealth, as audited by KPMG, comes to €2,342,250, broken down into property worth €835,000, bank deposits totalling €706,527, shares in private companies worth €10,497, shares in public companies worth €6,795, revenue from private companies reaching €667,431 and cars valued at €116,000.

For motor lovers, Anastasiades has at his disposal an Audi A8 bought last year for €85,000, a Mercedes S430 bought in 2001 and now worth €15,000, and a KIA Sportage bought in 2011 and worth €16,000.

In 2011, the DISY leader brought home €457,331 in total, ten times the sum he earns from his ‘bread and butter’ job as an MP. During 2011, he made €43,131 from his deputy’s salary, €16,600 in pension money, €15,996 from flat rentals, €113,854 in fees and share of profit from the firm Nicos

Anastasiades & Partners, €153,000 in dividends from the private company Imperium Services Limited which he has a 60 per cent share in, and €114,750 in dividends from the company Imperium Consulting Limited, of which he has a 54 per cent share.

In 2010, his total revenue was €316,366.

His wife, Andry Anastasiades’ total income in 2011 came to €34,912 (€6,000 from rent and €34,912 from her pension).

In 2010, her income came to €6,000 from rental money.

In Anastasiades’ statement on personal assets, he notes that all taxes on all income has been paid until 2011, and that the dividends from the two Imperium companies are used to put €312,000 a year towards paying off a loan taken to pay for the building housing the two companies’ offices worth €2,940,598.

Regarding immoveable property, the presidential candidate discloses a share in 13 fields and vineyards in the Limassol district, 12 of them presents from his mother and the 13th a gift from his grandfather.

Anastasiades with family members when he signed up as a presidential candidate rios Avenue (bought in 1985 for €28,000), and a 120 square metre flat (bought in 1983 for €38,000).

Andry Anastasiades owns a plot of land, 982 square metres in size, in Yermasoyia (bought in 2002 for €100,000), a residence of 350 square metres, built on the land at a cost of €500,000, two shops on Zinonos Street that were gifts from her parents, and seven plots of land (worth €114,000) bought as one plot of land in 1989 in Palodia at a cost of €55,000. The land was divided into plots in 2010.

The financial statement highlights that the apartments were bought with loans that have been fully paid off, while the Yermasoya residence has been gifted to a daughter while the parents maintained right of use of the building. Six of the seven plots above were

gifted to two daughters, while the seventh remains the ownership of Andry Anastasiades.

And lastly, the statement notes that the rental money from the two shops is passed on to the wife’s parents.

Responding to Anastasiades’ disclosure yesterday, AKEL spokesman Giorgos Loucaides suggested that after months of waiting, the DISY boss had yet to reveal his true personal wealth, and was instead misleading the public.

The ‘disclosure’ raised a number of questions, said Loucaides, like why Anastasiades chose to disclose his income from 2011 but not 2012, “and also how come his total assets are only worth two million euros when in 2011 alone his revenue came to half a million euros”.

the three main presidential contenders to declare his assets.

The first to do so was AKELbacked Stavros Malas, followed by EDEK-backed Giorgos Lillikas, though each candidate has chosen their own form of disclosure, rather than follow one standard format of divulging the particulars of their personal assets.

Malas stated that he holds €15,471 in bank accounts, and has taken out loans amounting to €449,561. He owns immovable property in Anthoupolis/Archangelos, Kambos, Pigenia and Kato Panayia, of a total value of €46,130 (in 1980 prices).

Lillikas’ disclosure was more detailed, but still raised some eyebrows. The 52-year-old has no bank deposits in his name, owns real estate and stock in a limited company, and his income in 2011 came to €115,923. The majority of his family’s wealth is in his wife’s name. His statement was signed by accounting firm G. Josephakis Audit Ltd. Anastasiades has promised that, if elected to office, his government would push through legislation making it mandatory for state officials to reveal their personal assets, which would be verified by an independent body of auditors.

Similar assurances have been made by the other contenders.

THE ELECTION race has hit a low point, though perhaps not its lowest, with presidential campaign teams exchanging accusations of engaging in dodgy campaign tricks.

DIKO’s general secretary Kyriacos Kenevezos yesterday accused the EDEKbacked Giorgos Lillikas camp of underhand practices, borrowing the symbols and emblems of the DIKO party to lure its members to his election gatherings.

“We believe that the public will turn its backs on those who choose to bring down the level of political discourse in the hope of gaining votes from DIKO members and others,” said Kenevezos, whose party is backing DISY leader Nicos Anastasiades for president.

“We are obliged to make special reference to the tenacity and strategy of Giorgos Lillikas and his campaign team to use the symbols to appeal to the people of DIKO,” he added.

Kenevezos questioned whether EDEK, which supports Lillikas’ presidential bid, agrees with this practice and if so, would they accept it if others did the same with their party emblems.

AKEL spokesman Giorgos Loucaides also fired salvos at the Lillikas campaign team, accusing it of calling members of the public pretending to be AKEL while encouraging those on the other end of the line to vote Lillikas.

IMMORAL “We understand the panic within the Lillikas camp but we cannot understand or accept anachronistic and immoral practices,” said Loucaides.

Meanwhile, DIKO MP Nicolas Papadopoulos came under fire from former commerce minister Antonis Michaelides, who served in the government of his father, the late Tassos Papadopoulos. The DIKO deputy recently resigned as party vicepresident in protest against DIKO support for Anastasiades’ bid, with Papadopoulos rooting instead for Lillikas.

Papadopoulos recently took pot shots at former cabinet members of his father’s government who also chose to support the DISY leader for president.

Michaelides replied with a volley of shots in a letter published in yesterday’s Politis, accusing Papadopoulos of putting personal ambitions above the interests of the country.

The former commerce minister asked what was more important, the election of a candidate who had the most chances of getting the country out of the economic quagmire it’s in, or the election of Papadopoulos as party leader in upcoming DIKO internal elections.

By Poly Pantelides PEOPLE were yesterday shopping in droves at what used to be the Debenhams Avenue store in the middle of Nicosia’s Makarios Avenue, coming out with nonbranded shopping bags and carrying bundles of clothes across three floors of discounted items.

The Debenhams store has shut down for “commercial and financial reasons” and though rumours abound about what will happen to the premises, Ermes Group whose portfolio includes Debenhams, Next and Peacocks are keeping a tight lid on their plans.

The finer print clarified that it would be up to 80 per cent but it was obvious that shoppers skimmed through that part because several were disappointed.

One joked: “Perhaps the

80 per cent is what you get when you add up the discounts”.

A civil servant said that it was the promise of an 80 per cent discount across the board that had lured her in. “There are discounts in stores anyway,” she said.

Case in point is the number of outlets also on the oncebusy avenue advertising significant discounts. Among them stand previous hubs of activity such as the City Plaza shopping mall, which now has only a few remaining open shops.

But at the former Debenhams Avenue many were sifting through discounted clothes, others were waiting patiently to pay for their haul, and people had been queuing outside the store to be first in.

Members of staff described the scene. A queue had formed close to 11am when doors would open. “At 11.05am the store was full,” one said.

A shopper, chatting away to someone put it like this: “I’ve seen this happen in

she said and quickly excused herself to “keep looking”.

The flagship Debenhams Central store also on Makarios Avenue in Nicosia will continue working as normal, according to the company.

Home Builders vote to strike indefinitely CONSTRUCTION workers decided yesterday to continue their strike indefinitely, while the union patrols became embroiled in a fight in Paphos when a contractor tried to recruit strikebreakers to continue works on a hotel renovation site.

Dozens of unemployed construction workers arrived on the renovation site, while a patrol force by unions SEK, PEO and DEOK were also in place.

But when the construction workers tried to enter the premises, they were prevented by a private security force recruited by the contractor and the hotel management.

There were also strikebreakers in Limassol, SEK’s Yiannakis Ioannou said. PEO and DEOK said the strikebreakers worked under subpar conditions compared to the collective agreements.

Employers “take advantage of thousands of cheap labour hands, trying to set the organised labour movement and the workers back dozens of years,” PEO said.

“The real culprits for the sector’s problems and specifically the large unemployment problem are the large portion of contractors that fire our peers every day… replacing them with cheap labour force,” the announcement said.

‘Village leader faked €23,000 theft from car’ THE 49-year-old former community leader of Klonari village was remanded in custody for six days yesterday by the Limassol district court after allegedly faking a car burglary to cover a €23,000 hole from the village council’s budget.

According to Police Chief Michalis Papageorgiou, the 49-year-old reported to police on Thursday that the rear window of his car had been smashed and a briefcase containing €23,000 and official documents was stolen.

“When our officers went to the scene they noticed there was no broken glass,” said Papageorgiou.

He added: “During questioning the man confessed that he made a false report because while serving as community leader he had embezzled that money.” The 49-year-old was relieved of his duties earlier this month by the Limassol district officer after having to declare Klonari village council bankrupt.

During questioning, the man confessed that he had made a number of withdrawals from the council bank account for personal reasons, starting last year, noting that he had intended to return the money at some point.

He then confessed to having broken his own car window to make it look as if the missing money was stolen along with important documents detailing council activities.

The 49-year-old was remanded in custody for six days yesterday and potentially faces charges of theft by a public official, abuse of power, public harm and other offences.

BRITISH ex pats living in Paphos have responded to an urgent appeal and are rallying to donate goods to go towards feeding 250 families who are in desperate need.

After the dire situation was highlighted in the Cyprus Mail this week, local businesswoman Pavlina Patsalou who heads up the group along with Paphos councilor George Sofokleous, says the response to the call for help so far has come from the British ex pat community.

“We want to thank everyone who has come and donated food,” Patsalou said yesterday. “Today we have already had around ten people donating all sorts of items. They have all been British.”

STUNNED She added: “One man who came with his wife couldn’t believe that there were people living in Paphos who didn’t have food to eat. He was stunned when 20 or so families came to collect their food parcels while he was there.”

More than 50 of the 250 families who live in the outlying areas of Paphos and cannot be helped by the municipality programme, have also had their electricity cut as they are unable to pay their bills.

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), spokesman Costas Gavrielides responded yesterday. “We are aware that some of our customers are having problems paying their bills.

There is a special domestic tariff (08) which is about 20 per cent cheaper than the usual tariff (05) and people who are eligible can sign up for this, it helps to reduce costs,” he said.

According to Gavrielides, families who have three dependent children and a family income of less than €51,000, or those who are receiving welfare assistance are eligible. “Every month we get a list of eligible customers from the welfare department,” he said.

For those who do not meet the criteria, Gavrielides noted that payment plans are also available, where costs can be spread out over a

twelve month period to “ease the burden”.

When asked about how certain families and individuals who are no longer in work and have no money are supposed to pay their bills he said: “There have been occasions in the past where we have alerted the welfare department to people who are struggling and really need help and they have responded. The EAC has helped on many occasions.”

The spokesman added that until the cost of fuel was reduced, the EAC would not be able to reduce electricity prices, pointing out that about 0.78 of every euro is swallowed up with the cost of fuel and other taxes.

In the meantime, the numbers of Paphos families who are unable to pay their bills as they have no income whatsoever is increasing and the volunteers say the problem will only get worse.

Paphos resident Paul Clarke aka Cycling Cyprus is organising a static bike ride to raise awareness of needy families and to get people to donate cash and food.

‘Pedalling against poverty’ will see Clarke cycle outside Phillipos supermarket in Peyia on Saturday February 9 from 9am-4pm.

He said: “We want shoppers to donate food to help feed a family. We have to do all we can to help and I hope that other people will get involved and organise similar events in Paphos.”

BANK ACCOUNT Due to the growing numbers of people desperate for help, and the amounts of money which the group needs to raise, they are opening a dedicated bank account next week and filing all of the relevant documents with the state to ensure it’s all legal and transparent.

The volunteers are holding a drive at Carrefour in Paphos today between 9am1pm.

Daily donations of food and clothes are being accepted at Pavlina Children’s Clothes shop and George and Effie’s hair salon from 9am-7pm.

Ex minister wins ‘Turkish slur’ case MP ordered to pay a former minister some â‚Ź35,000

Former minister of agriculture Costas Themistocleous, a staunch supporter of reuniďŹ cation, sued Zaharias Koulias in 2006 over a comment he made on a morning radio talk show, implying Themistocleous had been bribed to support Turkish views regarding the Turkish Cypriot breakaway state. “... who, let me remind you by the way, recently collected a decent amount of ÂŁ7,000 (sterling) from a Turkish company and the next day he went to a television station and said there is no pseudostate,â€? Koulias said of Themistocleous on a morning show on private Radio Proto.

Military area in north being dug for graves THE COMMITTEE on Missing Persons (CMP) has begun digging for possible burial sites within a fenced Turkish military area in the occupied areas, said Aristos Aristotelous, the Greek Cypriot member of the CMP. Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Aristotelous said the Turkish authorities recently gave their consent for excavations to take place, following a request from the CMP. The former AKEL MP welcomed the decision, adding that he hoped the CMP would also be able to carry out excavations in other Turkish military areas which have long been linked to possible burial sites.

Until now, Turkey has resisted requests to open up military areas where many of the missing are believed to have been buried in mass graves, based on witness accounts given to the CMP. Aristotelous said digging for the remains of missing persons began on Tuesday in a fenced military area southwest of the Kyrenia district, based on information given long ago to the CMP. As a result of interethnic conict in the 1960s and the

Turkish invasion of 1974, 1,464 Greek Cypriots and 494 Turkish Cypriots were reported missing.

Since then, according to the CMP, human remains representing over 900 individuals have been exhumed from different burial sites located across the island.

The CMP team of scientists has visited and opened over 600 potential burial sites so far, the majority in the north of the island, of the total number of sites, 373 did not contain any human remains.

As of August 2012, a total of 330 missing persons (264 Greek Cypriots and 66 Turkish Cypriots) were identiďŹ ed and returned to their families for burial.

Exhumations are carried out on both sides of the buffer zone by bicommunal teams (six teams in the north and two teams in the south) made of over 55 Cypriot archaeologists and anthropologists.

Bicommunal teams are now autonomous after having been trained by international experts from the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF) during the ďŹ rst 18 months of the project.

The Supreme Court ruled Koulias’ comment as defamatory and ordered a retrial of the case by a different judge to decide the amount of compensation – something the ďŹ rst judge should have done lest there was an appeal.

Themistocleous had demanded between â‚Ź85,000 and â‚Ź420,000. At the time, Themistocleous was a shareholder of a company along with two Turkish Cypriots who lived in the north.

A year before Koulias’ comment, a nationalist newspaper, To Kypriako Pontiki, reported that Themistocleous had cashed a cheque for £6,320 sterling issued by one of his two partners.

A few days after the cheque was issued, Themistocleous said in public that Turkish Cypriot politicians had conveyed to him their annoyance about the ‘pseudostate’ references used by Greek Cypriots, which they said did not help create a suitable climate for a settlement.

Themistocleous suggested that the terms “illegal stateâ€? or “non-recognised stateâ€? could be more ďŹ tting than pseudostate, prompting the reaction of Greek Cypriot politicians.

In his appeal, the former minister argued that Koulias’ phrase, based on the current political situation in Cyprus, could only “prompt contempt, hatred and ridicule� against him.

Forcing people to save for old age Cash-strapped workers opt out of voluntary schemes

By Sarah Mortimer BRITAIN may soon have to force workers to start saving for retirement to cut a soaring pensions bill set to reach 120 billion pounds in 20 years.

The government wants people to pay into their own pension pots rather than rely on the state. But many employees, with limited disposable income, have been reluctant to do this.

A scheme, introduced last October, automatically enrols staff 22 years or older into a company or national pension plan, but gives them a choice to opt out.

So if large numbers of workers pull out because they don’t want to pay or can’t afford the contributions, the government may decide to make membership compulsory in a Pension Review due in 2017.

“If opt-out rates are 50 percent or more, it is possible the government will suggest removing opt-out altogether and make pension saving mandatory,” Paul Gilbody, head of defined contributions consultant relations at BlackRock Investment Management, said.

The government’s current pension legislation is an attempt to tackle the country’s ballooning pensions bill, set to hit 8.5 percent of economic output by 2060, from 6.9 per cent now.

Less than half of employees in Britain are putting money into a workplace pension scheme, the lowest proportion since records began in 1997, according to the Office of National Statistics.

Britain lags behind countries including Denmark, the Netherlands and Australia in global pension rankings. Its pension system ranks seventh out of 16 countries in a

global comparison of national schemes, according to data from consulting firm Mercer.

Its lowly ranking reflects an ageing population, low investment returns and large government debt.

The Department of Work & Pensions told Reuters it had no plans to introduce mandatory private pension saving, but it did need to compel millions more people to save.

The DWP said it expected 70 per cent of people would stay in a workplace scheme and hoped to see 4.3 million savers in retirement schemes by May 2015 and between 6-9 million by 2018.

“One way or another, longterm pension contributions will increase,” Paul Macro, defined contribution retirement leader at Mercer said. “The government are trying to stop people relying on the state to support them in retirement.”

Under Britain’s current socalled auto-enrolment system, employee and employer both contribute 1 per cent of pay into a pension. But this will gradually increase to 5 per cent from the employee and 3 per cent from the employer by October 2018.

Someone earning 26,200 pounds ($41,400) a year, for example, would generate 4,667 pounds of employer contributions over 10 years, based on the auto-enrolment pension contribution guidelines, according to estimates by fund manager Fidelity Worldwide Investment.

Companies with more than 120,000 employees were required to start auto-enrolment in the second half of last year.

For small firms employing between 50-89 staff the deadline is July 2014. Eleven big companies, including Sainsbury have introduced the scheme.

But other large firms have not done so yet.

Ward defends comments Waitrose pulls burgers ahead of Holocaust Day after horsemeat scare A LIBERAL Democrat MP facing party disciplinary action over a statement he made about Israel’s treatment of Palestinians ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day has defended his actions.

David Ward sparked a backlash after putting a statement on his website “honouring those who died during the Holocaust” but accusing “the Jews” in Israel of “inflicting atrocities on Palestinians... on a daily basis”.

But the Bradford East MP stood by his comments insisting it was time to “look at every example of man’s inhumanity to fellow man”.

Ward said: “I feel strongly about this issue. I keep rereading what I said because I have heard so many comments about how outrageous this is. But he added: “Having visited Auschwitz twice, I am saddened that the Jews, who suffered unbelievable levels of persecution during the Holocaust, could within a few years of liberation from the death camps be inflicting atrocities on Palestinians in the new State of Israel and continue to do so on a daily basis.”

UPMARKET supermarket Waitrose has become the latest retailer to pull beefburgers from its shelves in the horsemeat scare.

The company said it had taken frozen burgers made

by Dalepak, one of the firms at the centre of the horsemeat contamination investigation, off sale “as a precaution” when it had its accreditation suspended.

Ten million burgers have been taken off supermarket shelves across Ireland and the UK as a result of the scandal when it was revealed some lines sold

by Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and Iceland were discovered to have contained traces of horsemeat.

In a statement, Waitrose said its burgers had since been tested and were found to be 100% beef.

“As a consequence we are 100% confident in the integrity of our supply chain,” it said.

“The ingredients in our

burgers are simple with all meat traceable back to British farms that we know.

“Our technical team visited the Dalepak site last week and were happy that our products were produced to our high specification and separately from other companies’ products (ours are produced at 6am before other any other burgers).”

The ABP Food Group, one of Europe’s biggest suppliers and processors, stopped work at its Silvercrest Foods plant in Co Monaghan, Ireland, after tests last week revealed contamination in frozen burgers.

Tests had already shown that Silvercrest Foods and another of the company’s subsidiaries, Dalepak Hambleton in Yorkshire, supplied beefburgers with traces of equine DNA to supermarkets, including one product classed as 29% horse.

Duma backs ‘gay propaganda’ ban Move seen as shoring up support for Putin

By Gabriela Baczynska and Alissa de Carbonnel RUSSIA’S parliament backed a draft law yesterday banning “homosexual propaganda”, in what critics see as an attempt to shore up support for President Vladimir Putin in the country’s largely conservative society.

Only one deputy in the State Duma lower house voted against the bill, but passions spilled over outside the chamber, where 20 people were detained after scuffles between Russian Orthodox Christians and gay activists who staged a “kiss-in” protest.

“We live in Russia, not Sodom and Gomorrah,” United Russia deputy Dmitry Sablin said before the 388-1 vote in the 450-seat chamber. “Russia is a thousands-years-old country founded on its own traditional values - the protection of which is dearer to me than even oil and gas.”

Veteran human rights campaigner Lyudmila Alexeyeva described the draft law as “medieval” and said it was intended to appeal to conservative voters after months of protests that have sapped Putin’s popularity.

“It (the Duma) is relying on the ignorance of people who think homosexuality is some sort of distortion,” she said.

The legislation has served to deepen divisions in society since Putin returned to the presidency in May and began moves seen by the opposition as designed to crack down on dissent and smother civil society.

He has drawn closer to the Russian Orthodox Church during this time, hoping the support of one of the most influential institutions in Russia will consolidate his grip on power.

In a sign of the passions caused by the bill, clashes broke out between supporters and opponents outside the Duma, a few hundred metres from the Kremlin in central Moscow.

holding Russian Orthodox icons and crosses, cheered and threw eggs as police hauled away gay activists, one of whom was splashed with green paint. Police said 20 people had been held.

The law must be passed in three readings by the lower house, approved by the upper house and then signed

by Putin to go into force. It would ban the promotion of gay events across Russia and impose fines of up to 500,000 roubles ($16,600) on organisers.

Supporters of the law welcome moves that would allow the banning of gay rights marches and complain about television and radio programmes which they say show support for gay couples.

“The spread of gay propaganda among minors violates their rights,” said ruling United Russia party deputy, Elena Mizulina, who chairs the Duma’s family issues committee. “Russian society is more conservative so the passing of this law is justified.”

Putin’s critics say the law is the latest in a series of legislative moves intended to stifle the opposition.

In a sign Kremlin-loyal lawmakers hope to eliminate all opposition in the house, two deputies who joined in street protests against Putin said on Friday that their Just Russia party threatened to kick them out if they continued to do so.

Public approval for Putin, who is now 60, stood in January at 62 per cent, the lowest level since June 2000, an independent pollster said on Thursday.

Monte Paschi scandal a risk to Monti A GROWING bank scandal in Italy yesterday threatened to hurt both the centre-left frontrunners and outgoing premier Mario Monti, as a survey suggested that next month’s election could usher in new instability.

The poll by the Piepoli Institute in La Stampa newspaper indicated the centre-left would fail to win control of the Senate, preventing it forming a stable government without outside help.

Centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani is widely expected to seek an alliance with Monti if he falls short in the Senate, which has equal power to the lower house in approving laws.

Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS), the world’s oldest bank, which is already seeking a 3.9 billion euro ($5.2 billion) government bailout, this week revealed losses on complex financial instruments that could cost it as much as 720 million euros, unleashing a major scandal that is playing into the election campaign.

The bank’s biggest shareholder is a chari-

table foundation controlled by politicians of the Democratic Party (PD), the biggest group in the centre-left alliance.

“There will certainly be a negative effect on the Democratic Party,” said Maurizio Pessato, the vice chairman of rival pollster SWG. “The question is whether it will be temporary and how intense it will be.”

The idea that part of the revenue from big tax hikes imposed by the outgoing technocrat government could be used to rescue a bank is toxic for both the PD and Monti, who is also standing in the election, Pessato said.

“Much of the Italian population sees Monti as someone connected to the financial world.

The man on the street will see this as Monti’s world, and imagine he is involved.”

Politicians rushed to exploit the scandal.

“This stinks of bribes,” said Northern League leader Roberto Maroni. “Monti gave MPS 4 billion euros and he must explain why ... He cannot avoid the responsibility he has in this disaster, him and only him.”

In a third straight day of fiery rhetoric, the North directed its verbal onslaught at its neighbour yesterday, saying: “‘Sanctions’ mean a war and a declaration of war against us.”

The reclusive North this week declared a boycott of all dialogue aimed at ending its nuclear program and vowed to conduct more rocket and nuclear tests after the UN Security Council censured it for a December long-range missile launch.

“If the puppet group of traitors takes a direct part in the UN ‘sanctions,’ the DPRK will take strong physical countermeasures against it,” the North’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said, referring to the South.

Tourist overtures TWO years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Japan is making a big push to win back German tourists, who are still avoiding the country because of concerns over radiation.

Visitor numbers from Germany, the world’s biggest spenders on foreign holidays in 2011, fell 35 per cent between 2010 and 2011, and in 2012 did not recover as much as other markets, Tokyo tourism officials said in Frankfurt this week.

“After the earthquake, business travellers came back fairly quickly, because business will not wait. But tourists are still cautious,” said Hiromi Waldenberger, a tourism representative for Tokyo based in Germany.

Germans are especially sensitive to nuclear issues and reacted strongly to the Fukushima disaster, with Chancellor Angela Merkel taking the decision to exit nuclear power as a result.

Croc hunt SOUTH Africa has called out the police to join the hunt for as many as 10,000 crocodiles on the loose after escaping from a farm during floods and being washed into one of southern Africa’s biggest rivers, officials said yesterday.

Crocodile farmers, locals and police have trapped thousands of the reptiles, using plastic bands to tie their legs behind their backs and then piling them into pick-up trucks.

THE Pentagon has begun laying off many of its 46,000 temporary and contract employees and cutting maintenance on ships and aircraft in an effort to slow spending due to fears of new defence budget cuts, Deputy Defence Secretary Ashton Carter said yesterday.

Carter said he had asked the military services to produce detailed plans by February 1 to say what they are doing to reduce short-term spending before roughly $45 billion in new cuts are due to go into effect on March 1.

He asked for detailed longterm planning by February 8 on how the services will handle the $45 billion in acrossthe-board cuts, which will go into effect on March 1 unless Congress agrees on an alternative package of spending reductions.

The Pentagon currently is absorbing $487 billion in cuts to projected defence spending over 10 years that were agreed in the Budget Control Act of 2011. That law also required the additional acrossthe-board cuts by January 1, 2013, unless Congress agreed to an alternative.

Lawmakers failed to reach a new deal but did agree to postpone the across-theboard cuts until March 1 to give themselves more time.

But March 1 is five months

into the fiscal year, giving the Pentagon less time to absorb them.

Defense officials had long resisted taking action in response to the threat of a new round of automatic budget cuts, saying they were put in place to try to force Congress to reach alternative spending reductions.

‘SOBERING’ DEBATE But Carter said the debate surrounding US financial issues in late December had been “sobering,” with little attention paid to the effects of the new cuts on the Pentagon or its mission. And the decision to postpone the cuts for another two months also reduced the time the department would have to respond.

“When we were marching up to January 1 we had more runway, more time to absorb cuts if we had to absorb cuts,” Carter said. “Now we’re running out of time and so for those two reasons, our risk calculus has to change at this point and we need to begin acting.”

The Pentagon’s budget mess has been further complicated by the congressional failure to allocate funding for the Pentagon’s budget for the 2013 fiscal year, which began October 1. The department is currently operating on a continuing resolution that maintains funding at 2012 levels.

“The problem is that the

money is in the wrong pots,” Carter told reporters. He said the Pentagon had planned to spend considerably more for operations and maintenance in 2013 than it did in 2012.

“We don’t have enough money to operate the forces in the way we thought we were going to,” Carter said. “That’s the problem. And that’s a more than $10-billion problem. And we’re running out of time to eat that $10 billion and that’s the reason that we need to act now.”

To slow the rate of spending, the department has put a freeze on civilian hiring, he said. Usually the department hires 1,000 to 2,000 civilians a week, about 46 per cent of them military veterans and 86 per cent of them living and working across the country, not in Washington.

The department’s 46,000 temporary and contract employees are “all now subject to release”, Carter said, meaning they will either be let go now or will not have their contracts extended. The only exception would be if they are performing jobs critical to the war or the department’s basic mission.

The department also is cutting back on base and equipment maintenance, which costs about $15 billion per year. He said the Navy would cancel maintenance on 30 ships that had been planned for the third and fourth quarters this year.

Honduras in meltdown STREET surveillance cameras in one of the world’s most dangerous cities have been turned off because the government of Honduras has not paid millions of pounds it owes.

The operator that runs them in the capital Tegucigalpa is now threatening to suspend police radio services as well.

Teachers have been demonstrating almost every day as they have not been paid in six months, while doctors complain about the shortage of essential medicines, gauze, needles and latex gloves.

The Central American country has been on the brink of bankruptcy for months, as politicians put off passing a budget necessary to pay for basic government services.

Honduras is also grappling with 5 billion dollars (£3.16 billion) in foreign debt, a figure equivalent to last year’s entire government budget.

“There are definitely patients who haven’t been able to get better because of this problem,” said Dr Lilian Discua, a paediatrician.

“An epileptic who doesn’t take his medicine will have a crisis. This is happening.”

The financial problems add to a general sense that Honduras is a country in meltdown, as murders soar, drug trafficking overruns cities

and coasts and the nation’s highest court has been embattled in a constitutional fight with the Congress.

Many streets are riddled with potholes, and cities are not replacing stolen manhole covers.

Soldiers are not receiving their regular salaries, while the education secretary says 96 per cent of schools close several days every week or month because of teacher strikes.

Experts say a mix of government corruption, election-year politics and a struggling economy has fuelled the crisis.

The local branch of the international watchdog group Transparency International issued a study last month that allegedly some politicians had spent money on plane tickets to a tennis tournament in Spain, Mother’s Day gifts and other personal expenses.

The study’s author, Ludin Ayala, said the country’s Congress is the most expensive in Central America, although Honduras is the poorest country in the region.

Former presidential candidate Olban Valladares claimed that much of the public money has gone into campaigns ahead of November’s elections, in which the president, mayors and 128 congressional representatives will be elected.

Senior Japan envoy meets with China’s Xi amid backdrop of isles dispute A SENIOR envoy handed China’s leader a cordial letter from Japan’s prime minister yesterday in the highest-level contact between the sides since tensions spiked in September over an island dispute, though the meeting yielded little beyond commitments to hold further contact.

some of the intensity of the dispute, which has raised concerns over a possible armed conflict.

Xi told Yamaguchi that China attached “great importance” to his visit, held in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People following four months of rising friction that have included violent protests in China and the scrambling of fighter jets by both countries.

“Mr Yamaguchi visits China at a period in which China-Japan relations face a special situation,” Xi said.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Yamaguchi said both men stressed the need for calm. He said they also discussed a future high-level meeting in preparation for a possible summit between Xi and Abe, but gave no indication when that might happen.

Saudi prince calls for anti-tank, anti-aircraft arms to go to rebels

By Tom Perry and Abdel Rahman Youssef PROTESTERS clashed with police across Egypt yesterday on the second anniversary of the revolt that toppled Hosni Mubarak, taking to the streets against the elected Islamist president who they accuse of betraying the revolution.

At least 91 civilians and 42 security personnel were hurt in violence across the country, officials said. Street battles erupted in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and Port Said, where the Muslim Brotherhood’s political party offices were torched.

Thousands of opponents of President Mohamed Mursi and his Muslim Brotherhood allies massed in Cairo’s Tahrir Square - the cradle of the uprising against Mubarak - to revive the demands of a revolution they say has been hijacked by the Islamists.

The January 25 anniversary showcased the divide between the Islamists and their secular foes that is hindering Mursi’s efforts to revive an economy in crisis and reverse a plunge in Egypt’s currency by enticing back investors and tourists.

Inspired by Tunisia’s ground-

breaking popular uprising, Egypt’s revolution spurred further revolts across the Arab world. But the sense of common purpose that united Egyptians two years ago has given way to internal strife that has only worsened and last month triggered lethal street battles.

‘DEFINITELY TENSE’ “It’s definitely tense on the ground, but so far there hasn’t been anything out of the ordinary or anything that really threatens to fundamentally alter the political situation,” said Shadi Hamid, director of research at the Brookings Doha Centre.

The Brotherhood decided against mobilising for the anniversary, wary of the scope for more conflict after violence in December stoked by Mursi’s decision to fast-track an Islamist-tinged constitution rejected by his opponents.

The Brotherhood fiercely denies accusations of trampling on democracy as part of a smear campaign by its rivals.

Before dawn yesterday, police battled protesters who threw petrol bombs and firecrackers as they tried to ap-

proach a wall blocking access to government buildings near Tahrir Square. Clouds of tear gas filled the air. At one point, riot police used one of the incendiaries thrown at them to set ablaze at least two tents erected by the youths, a Reuters witness said.

Skirmishes between stonethrowing youths and the police continued in streets around the square into the day. Ambulances ferried away a steady stream of casualties.

“Our revolution is continuing. We reject the domination of any party over this state.

We say no to the Brotherhood state,” Hamdeen Sabahy, a popular leftist leader, told Reuters.

There were similar scenes in Suez and Alexandria, where protesters and police clashed near local government offices.

Black smoke billowed from tyres set ablaze by youths.

Police also fired tear gas to disperse dozens of protesters who tried to scale barbed-wire barriers protecting the presidential palace in Cairo, witnesses said. Other protesters broke into offices of provincial governors in Ismailia, east of Cairo, and Kafr el-Sheikh in the Nile Delta.

French-backed Mali forces push towards Gao FRENCH-backed government forces advanced into northern Mali towards the Islamist rebel stronghold of Gao yesterday, recapturing the town of Hombori and forcing al Qaeda-allied fighters to pull back under relentless French air strikes.

France sent troops and aircraft to its former colony two weeks ago to block a southward offensive by Islamists occupying Mali’s north. French and Malian troops have been pushing forward on either side of the Niger River, securing several farming towns recaptured over the last week.

Leaders gathered at an African Union sum-

mit in Addis Ababa appealed for logistical support, supplies and funding from the international community to allow a nearly 6,000strong African ground force to deploy fully.

Malian officials said government forces entered Hombori, about 160 km (100 miles) southwest of Gao, late on Thursday and said an offensive against Gao could take place in the next few days.

Gao, with the other Saharan desert towns of Timbuktu and Kidal, has been occupied since last year by an Islamist alliance that includes AQIM, the north African franchise of al Qaeda.

A SENIOR member of Saudi Arabia’s monarchy called yesterday for Syrian rebels to be given anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons to “level the playing field” in their battle against President Bashar al-Assad.

“What is needed are sophisticated, high-level weapons that can bring down planes, can take out tanks at a distance. This is not getting through,” said Prince Turki al-Faisal, a former intelligence chief and brother of the Saudi foreign minister.

Insurgents in Syria have seized territory in the north of the country and control suburbs to the east and south of the capital, but Assad’s air power and continued army strength have limited their advances 22 months into the conflict.

“I’m not in government so I don’t have to be diplomatic. I assume we’re sending weapons and if we were not sending weapons it would be terrible mistake on our part,” the Saudi prince said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“You have to level the playing field. Most of the weapons the rebels have come from captured Syrian stocks and defectors bringing their weapons,” he said.

More than 60,000 people

Prince Turki al-Faisal wants to arm Syrian militants have been killed in the conflict, which started nearly two years ago with mainly peaceful protests but has mushroomed into a civil war that has driven half a million people from the country and displaced many more.

King Abdullah of Jordan, which has taken in some 300,000 Syrian refugees, 20,000 of them in the last week, told the Davos meeting that anyone who thought Syrian President Bashar alAssad was going to fall within weeks did not understand the complex situation and the balance of forces.

One major problem was that radical al Qaeda forces had established themselves in Syria

for the last year and were receiving money and equipment from abroad, he said.

Noting that Jordanian forces were still fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan alongside NATO troops, he said: “The new Taliban we are going to have to deal with will be in Syria.”

Even in the most optimistic scenario, it would take at least three years to “clean them up” after the fall of the Assad government, the monarch said.

He called for major powers to craft “a real and inclusive transition plan” for Syria, saying the army must be preserved intact to form the backbone of any new system and avoid the anarchy that prevailed in Iraq after the USled 2003 invasion.

Syria has accused Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, the United States and France of funding and arming the rebels, something they have all denied. But UN diplomats say that weapons are clearly reaching the rebels via Gulf Arab states and Turkey.

Saudi Arabia has called in the past for the rebels to be armed, but diplomats say Western countries are reluctant to allow sophisticated weapons into the country, fearing they would fall into the hands of Islamist forces.

A NUMBER of Barclays current and past executives are on a shortlist of individuals named in regulatory documents referring to the bank’s attempted rigging of global benchmark interest rates, court documents released yesterday showed.

The list includes the head of Barclays’ investment bank, Rich Ricci, who has led a reputation-based review of all of Barclays’ investment bankingactivities following the scandal, which saw the bank fined $453 million by United States and British authorities.

The list also includes finance director Chris Lucas, former Chief Executive Bob Diamond, former chief operating officer Jerry del Missier, and former compliance head Stephen Morse.

A British judge ordered the bank to reveal their identities during a preliminary hearing for a test case on the misselling of interest rate swaps brought by a residential care home operator.

A longer list of 104 individuals who were named in court papers was released on Thursday after the judge denied their request for anonymity.

The shorter list of 25, released on Friday, names those specifically referred to in regulatory documents referring to Libor manipulation.

Twenty-four of the 25 had requested anonymity - the exception being former Barclays trader Jay Merchant, who went on to become head of swaps trading at UBS before leaving his position last August amid federal scrutiny of his activities while at Barclays.

None of those named is necessarily implicated in any wrongdoing.

‘Grexit’ as Davos man’s nightmare

By Paul Taylor WHAT A difference a year makes! At the last World Economic Forum in Davos there were frantic secret meetings on saving the euro and private straw polls on whether the eurozone would break up and how soon Greece would be forced out.

Twelve months on, the euro’s survival is widely taken for granted by the policymakers and business leaders attending the annual forum, and the EU’s top economic official has time to go skiing while in the Swiss mountain resort.

“I recall last year in 2012, Davos was full of uncertainty about the eurozone,” European Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said in an interview.

“Last year there was a very tense mood here. This year I think we are seeing a sentiment moving from stabilisation to recovery, and that means I should get a chance to do some cross-country skiing.

Perhaps the most striking change in this year’s annual gathering of the captains of business, financial services and government is how little talk there has been about the euro. The familiar prophets of doom are silent, or at least muted.

Indeed, there was far more discussion in the cavernous Congress Centre and the luxury hotels that surround it of whether Britain will still be in the European Union in a few years’ time after Prime Minister David Cameron’s speech promising an in-out referendum within five years.

“Brexit” has replaced “Grexit” as Davos man’s nightmare.

Cameron got a warm reception when he addressed the global forum as chairman of the Group of Eight major

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde appears on screen during a session of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2013 yesterday at the Swiss resort of Davos (AFP) industrialised nations with a rousing call for free-trade agreements, more open markets, greater competition and a crackdown on tax avoidance.

But his comments on the EU were more divisive. “To try and shoehorn countries into a centralised political union would be a great mistake for Europe, and Britain wouldn’t be part of it,” he declared.

BBC Economics Correspondent Stephanie Flanders drew applause that reflected many participants’ unease when she asked Cameron whether he thought the business community welcomed the prospect of five years of uncertainty over Britain’s future in the EU. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, a close Cameron ally in pressing for greater economic liberalism in the EU, said a British vote to leave would be a disaster, but he did not think it would happen.

Last year, the economic elite were hanging on every word of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s speech, in which she

rejected pressure to increase the size of the eurozone’s rescue fund for troubled states.

The key to reassuring markets was to restore lost trust in government policies, she said.

In the end, Germany did accept a somewhat bigger financial firewall, and a European bailout of Spain’s banks. But it was a pledge by European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi last July to do whatever it took to preserve the euro that was the turning point in the crisis.

Berlin’s decision in August, after months of hesitation, to keep Greece in the currency area at the cost of more financial aid and a possible future writedown of Greek debt owed to eurozone governments was the other big inflection point.

Speculators have so far not risked betting against the ECB’s determination, allowing Spanish and Italian bond yields to fall back to levels not seen since before the peak of the crisis.

Draghi told the Davos forum that there was “positive con-

tagion on the financial market and for the financial variables, but we don’t see this transmitted to the real economy yet.”

Yet he resisted any idea of relaxing the austerity policies that are contributing to keeping much of the eurozone economy in recession, saying fiscal consolidation was unavoidable.

Both Spain and Italy have adopted strict austerity budgets and tough reforms of pensions and labour markets, while Ireland and Portugal have stuck doggedly to EUIMF adjustment programs and are aiming to return to market funding this year.

A group of healthier European banks were due to announce yestrday that they have repaid early some of the 489 billion euros they borrowed in ultra-cheap liquidity from the ECB last December to avoid a looming credit crunch.

Klaus Regling, head of the eurozone’s ESM rescue fund, told Reuters that foreign investors are piling back into southern European countries’

debt auctions, with China and other Asian buyers leading the way, followed by Middle East funds and, more slowly, U.S. institutions.

Only three months ago, Spain seemed to be on the brink of having to request a sovereign assistance program to trigger ECB buying of its bonds. The question was when, not if.

Now Regling says he does not expect to have to fund a bailout of Spain this year.

Tiny Cyprus, closely linked financially to Greece, is the only eurozone country that is requesting emergency loans.

Investors and business consultants say they see signs of investment returning to the eurozone, although not necessarily to all of its troubled fringes.

Asked what her biggest concern was for 2013, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde listed the fiscal problems of the United States, Japan and Europe, and keeping up the momentum of structural economic reform in all three areas.

Global shares, euro rise as Europe’s outlook brightens THE EURO hit an 11-month high and shares rose yesterday on signs that Europe’s financial system is returning to health and the outlook is brightening for Germany, the continent’s biggest economy.

In the United States mostly solid corporate earnings reports have also set the stage for the S&P 500 index .SPX to extend its best winning streak in over six years and close in on its highest level since the financial crisis began.

Sentiment across riskier asset markets rose when the European Central Bank said eurozone banks would repay 137 billion euros in emergency loans early.

By taking back the three-year loans after only one year, the ECB has become the first major central bank to start moving away from unconventional monetary policy measures to tackle the crisis. By contrast, the US Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan

are buying bonds to stimulate economic growth.

Altogether, the ECB lent about one trillion euros in late 2011 and early last year to avoid a credit crunch.

The scale of the repayment, which beat the average estimate of around 100 billion euros in a Reuters poll, sent the euro higher, pushed German government bond prices down and boosted bank stocks across the eurozone.

“This is more than we had expected and underlines the material improvement in funding conditions for most European banks in the past 12 months,” said Michael Symonds, a credit analyst at Daiwa Capital Markets.

The euro hit $1.3461, up 0.5 per cent and its highest level since February 2012, to extend the gains which followed the release of data showing the German economy gathering speed again after contracting late last year.

German bond futures fell 40 ticks while two-year Bund yields extended an earlier rise to be up seven basis points at 0.24 per cent. The main Euro STOXX index of eurozone banking shares .SX7E was up 1.4 per cent and back to levels seen in mid-2011.

Before the ECB announcement European equity markets - and German shares in particular - had gained when the Ifo think tank said its business climate index rose in January to its highest level since June 2012.

The German Ifo index followed another business survey on Thursday which suggested Europe’s largest economy was set to grow at its fastest pace in a year, although that data also showed France may be heading back into recession.

“Germany is roaring back to growth in the new year,” said Berenberg Bank economist Christian Schulz.

Legislature should have amended constitution article relating to judges’pay IN THE END neither common sense nor public spirit prevailed. District court judges went ahead with their appeal against the pay cuts imposed on them by the state in 2011, presumably hoping that if it is upheld, the additional pay cuts, approved in December, would also be reversed. The full bench of the Supreme Court is hearing the appeal which commenced on Tuesday and will continue on Monday.

The main argument of the lawyers representing the judges was that the pay cuts were in violation of Article 158.3 of the constitution which states that “the remuneration and other terms of employment of any judge cannot be changed unfavourably after his/her appointment.” An unconstitutional law could not become constitutional because of the reason it was enacted - in this case the economic difficulties faced by the state – argued the lawyers.

It is sad that the judges are using an article of the constitution that had the sole purpose of safeguarding the independence of the judiciary in order to defend their personal interests and securing preferential treatment.

They know as well as anyone, that the pay cuts were in no way aimed at eroding the independence of judges or penalising them for rulings the executive and the legislative powers did not approve of.

In fact, judges acknowledge that the pay cuts were imposed because of the economic problems faced by the state, which is why they have offered, as an alternative, to make voluntary, monthly contributions to the state. It was not clear whether these voluntary contributions would be the equivalent of the total cuts imposed over the previous two years and that all judges would make them. Nobody could force all judges to ‘voluntarily’ contribute a percentage of their monthly salary to the state, in the event the appeal was upheld, because that could be unconstitutional or illegal. Nobody could be legally forced to give up a part of his or her salary against their wishes.

Even in the very unlikely event that all the judges make a voluntary contribution equivalent to the pay cuts imposed on other public employees, they would still have secured preferential treatment because their pensions and retirement bonuses would be based on their full salary. There is another issue raised by the judges’ appeal. The decision would directly affect the earnings, pensions and retirement bonuses of Supreme Court Judges who are being called to make a decision on the appeal.

All these difficulties could have been avoided if the legislature amended the article of the constitution, relating to judges’ pay. It may have been a complicated procedure but it would have eliminated the constitutional argument cited by judges in order to secure preferential treatment.

Progressive and even revolutionary change “The tenth day of December 1982 was a milestone of multilateralism,” wrote UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in the foreword of a booklet to mark the 30th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Ban also wrote: “After years of detailed and delicate negotiations, UNCLOS was opened for signature. The same day, an unprecedented 119 countries signed the treaty, a record that still stands. This achievement was made possible by the hard work and meticulous preparation of a diverse and committed group of women and men.”

Below is the article, from the anniversary booklet, by Ambassador Andreas Jacovides who was head of the Cyprus delegation during the conference and played an active role in negotiating the provisions of importance to Cyprus.

MULTITUDE of issues were dealt with and indeed regulated by UNCLOS, this veritable constitution of the seas and oceans, consisting of 320 Articles and nine Annexes. One hundred and sixty-one States and the European Union are (1631 EU) parties to the Convention, thus conferring to it the status of customary law.

The Third UN Conference on the Law of the Sea aimed at re-examining and, where appropriate, recasting virtually all aspects of the Law of the Sea. It has combined the element of codification with that of progressive development, with emphasis on the latter, owing to the participation, of many new states which had not been parties to the formulation of the traditional rules.

In significant respects, new and revolutionary concepts such as, the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and that of the Common Heritage of Mankind were introduced and elaborated.

On the other hand, it has been found that other aspects of the law have stood the test of time and should remain as before, or with minor modifications to adjust them to the overall scheme (e.g. the Regime of Islands and the Freedom of the High Seas.).

On the whole UNCLOS was characterised by a judicious blending of elements of progressive and even revolutionary change with those of stability and continuity, thus preserving a balance between conflicting claims and interests.

In my considered opinion, despite imperfections which were the price for achieving consensus, UNCLOS is a significant achievement in multilateral law making and, as such, deserves general support.

For my country, Cyprus, UNCLOS is of great significance and an area where Cyprus made a major contribution as an island state in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Through its active participation in the Conference, Cyprus played a key role in the formulation and adoption of such issues as the full entitlement of islands to all zones

of maritime jurisdiction (Art 121), enclosed and semi enclosed seas (Arts 122-3), the median line as starting point of delimitation of the EEZ between the coasts of adjacent or opposite states and third party dispute settlement provisions (Ch. XV).

All of these are essential in safeguarding the interests of Cyprus, and have found practical application in the EEZ Delimitation Agreements with Egypt (2003), Lebanon (2007), and Israel (2010) on the basis of the median line and with arbitration as the means of solving disputes.

As already stressed, the very concept of the EEZ and its significant legal consequences were the creation of UNCLOS. My own active involvement in Law of the Sea matters extends to more than four decades. I had the honour to represent Cyprus in the SeaBed Committee (1970-3); the Third UN Conference (1973-82) where I signed the Convention; was present at the corning into force of the Convention (1994); took an active role as Permanent Representative to the UN (1992) and later as delegate to the 20th Anniversary event (2002).

UNCLOS is a significant achievement in multilateral law emy and elsewhere and, in my recently published book (“International Law and Diplomacy” 2011), 6 Chapters are devoted to Law of the Sea issues.

The Third UN Conference, in Caracas, New York, Geneva and Montego Bay, was where alliances and friendships were formed among the Law of the Sea “mafia”, as reading through the names listed ill the Secretariat paper reminded me with some nostalgia. Many “graduated” to top positions in their respective governments, others became judges of the ICJ and ITLOS, and members of the ILC. As for anecdotes, there are too many to recount: I remember Galindo Pohl, Chairman of the Sea-Bed Committee dealing with the issue of straits, giving the, floor to “the representative of the Soviet Union to express the position of the United States and others” (despite being the height of the Cold War, the Soviets and the Americans had the same stand on submarines passing submerged through international straits).

Robert Marschik, representing land-locked Austria, mockingly expressed gratitude for my agreeing, in a provision on the distribution of the common heritage of mankind, to “including the land- locked states” (“thank you” he said “for including us among mankind!”).

Henry Darwin, of the U.K., asking me in Caracas, soon after the coup of the Greek junta in Cyprus, “how do

you operate, who gives you your instructions” to which I replied, “during normal times very rarely do I receive instructions from Nicosia and I certainly don’t expect to receive any now!”. Tony Small, from New Zealand I labelled, only half in jest, as Antonio Piccolo Machiavelli when New Zealand which had fought with us on islands rights changed sides when it came to the median line on delimitation.

“Geographically disadvantaged states” is a term used for states with very narrow exposure to the sea, e.g. Iraq.

At some point I suggested to a colleague, tongue in cheek, that Cyprus might be considered a geographically disadvantaged state. Told that this was impossible since Cyprus is an island with sea all around it, I retorted that we could be so described considering the neighbourhood we were located in!

One could go on, but my allotment of space has run out.

So let me conclude, by stating with conviction that the Convention which we signed 30 years ago in Montego Bay was a very significant achievement in multilateral law making – for the world, for Cyprus and for me personally.

Showbiz Stone Roses, Blur, Phoenix headline Coachella

Louis C.K. named funniest in US showbiz

BRITISH rockers Blur and The Stone Roses will be joining French indie-rock band Phoenix and Red Hot Chili Peppers to headline this year’s three-day Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, organisers said.

The annual music festival, set for two consecutive weekends in April, has become one of the largest US music festivals, attracting more than 80,000 people to the desert town of Indio, California.

After featuring electronic music DJs such as Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, Afrojack and David Guetta among the top-billed acts last year, this year’s Coachella sees the music festival return to its rock roots.

The festival will take place on the weekends of April 1214 and 19-21, with the same line-up both weekends.

Blur and The Stone Roses, who recently reunited after a long hiatus, will headline Friday. Phoenix, who have a new album coming out this spring, will take Saturday’s primetime spot.

Los Angeles rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers, who previously headlined the festival in 2003 and 2007, will close out the festival in the Sunday headlining slot.

Other anticipated names on the line-up this year include hip hop collective Wu-Tang Clan, Icelandic indie band Sigur Ros, Grammy nominees The Lumineers and electro-rock music group The Postal Service.

Last year, hip hop veterans Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre grabbed headlines as they resurrected late rapper Tupac via hologram on stage for the closing night of the festival.

Ticket prices start at $349.

Radcliffe, 23, plays poet Allen Ginsberg aged 17 - a young, naive and closeted teen who struggles to find his place in the world years before the sexual and cultural liberation of the 1960s.

As Ginsberg enters Columbia University in New York, his encounters with fellow mavericks Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan), William S Burroughs (Ben Foster) and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston) bring about a new vision - the founding of the Beat Generation.

Indie film Kill Your Darlings premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to critical praise this week and was

purchased by Sony Pictures Classics for wider distribution later this year.

After 10 years and eight Harry Potter films, Radcliffe is also looking for a new place as an actor, appearing on stage in 2007 in London and New York in the drama Equus, for which he appeared fully nude, and musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in 2011.

Kill Your Darlings sees Radcliffe pushing boundaries again as Ginsberg comes of age, including a raunchy sex scene with a man.

“Everybody wants to have as diverse a body of work as they can possibly have, and that’s what keeps people interested in your career,” Radcliffe said.

“There’s a lot to live up to in a sense that you’re playing someone so well known, and revered by so many people, but we’re not making a reverential film about him

Singer Manilow ill, Broadway comeback delayed SINGER Barry Manilow has cancelled the opening night and three other performances of his Broadway comeback run after coming down with bronchitis, according to Manilow’s website.

The cancellations threaten to upend the Could It Be Magic singer’s return to Broadway following a more than two-decade absence.

The concerts, which had been slated for Thursday through Sunday, will be made up in February and March, his website said.

Manilow, 69, will try to perform on Tuesday, the next scheduled show.

Manilow cancelled two preview shows earlier in the week because of the illness, after which his website promised the singer would be ready for opening night “come hell or high water.”

“It turns out the only thing worse than hell and high water is bronchitis,” Manilow’s website said of the cancellations. “Barry is deeply sorry to disappoint his fans and is doing everything he can to ensure a speedy recovery.”

Is Facebook envy making you miserable? You’re not alone

By Belinda Goldsmith WITNESSING friends’ vacations, love lives and work successes on Facebook can cause envy and trigger feelings of misery and loneliness, according to German researchers.

A study conducted jointly by two German universities found rampant envy on Facebook, the world’s largest social network that now has over one billion users and has produced an unprecedented platform for social comparison.

Twitter’s new service suggests future may lie in video TWITTER Inc, the social network known for its 140-character messages, hinted at the direction of its evolution on Thursday with the launch of a new streaming video service for smartphones.

The service, called Vine, records six-second-long video clips, which can then be seamlessly embedded within tweets.

The foray into video marks the beginning of a new thread in Twitter’s development, which evolved from a simple SMS text-messaging service in its early days into a platform that now delivers multimedia content.

Privately held Twitter, which was founded in 2006 and is now expected by analysts to go public within two years, has spent the past year encouraging marketers to use its multimedia capabilities to deliver ads.

“Like Tweets, the brevity of videos on Vine (six seconds or less) inspires creativity,” Michael Sippey, a Twitter vice president, said on the company’s blog.

Twitter’s increasing emphasis on delivering video through its network has stirred speculation that it could eventually host longer content and grow into a bona fide media broadcaster.

Internet ruled ‘essential’ A GERMAN court ruled on Thursday that people have the right to claim compensation from service providers if their internet access is disrupted, because the internet is an “essential” part of life.

The Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe made the ruling after hearing the case of a man who was unable to use his DSL connection, which also offered a telephone and fax line, for two months from late 2008 to early 2009.

He had already received compensation for the cost of having to use a mobile phone, but wanted to be compensated for not being able to use the internet.

“The internet plays a very important role today and affects the private life of an individual in very decisive ways,” a court spokeswoman told Germany’s ARD TV.

The researchers found that one in three people felt worse after visiting the site and more dissatisfied with their lives, while people who browsed without contributing were affected the most.

“We were surprised by how many people have a negative experience from Facebook with envy leaving them feeling lonely, frustrated or angry,” researcher Hanna Krasnova from the Institute of Information Systems at Berlin’s Humboldt University said.

“From our observations some of

these people will then leave Facebook or at least reduce their use of the site,” said Krasnova, adding to speculation that Facebook could be reaching saturation point in some markets.

Researchers from Humboldt University and from Darmstadt’s Technical University found vacation photos were the biggest cause of resentment with more than half of envy incidents triggered by holiday snaps on Facebook.

ers could compare how many birthday greetings they received to those of their Facebook friends and how many “likes” or comments were made on photos and postings.

“Passive following triggers invidious emotions, with users mainly envying happiness of others, the way others spend their vacations and socialise,” the researchers said in the report Envy on Facebook: A Hidden Threat to Users’ Life Satisfaction?.

“The spread and ubiquitous presence of envy on Social Networking Sites is shown to undermine users’

life satisfaction.”

They found people aged in their mid-30s were most likely to envy family happiness while women were more likely to envy physical attractiveness.

The researchers based their findings on two studies involving 600 people.

“From a provider’s perspective, our findings signal that users frequently perceive Facebook as a stressful environment, which may, in the longrun, endanger platform sustainability,” the researchers concluded.

A comprehensive breakdown

US homeland chief: cyber 9/11 could happen ‘imminently’ U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has warned a major cyber attack is a looming threat and could have the same sort of impact as last year’s Superstorm Sandy, which knocked out electricity in a large swathe of the Northeast.

Napolitano said a “cyber 9/11” could happen “imminently” and that critical infrastructure - including water, electricity and gas - was very vulnerable to such a strike.

“We shouldn’t wait until there is a 9/11 in the cyber world. There are things we can and should be doing right now that, if not prevent, would mitigate the extent of damage,” said Napolitano, speaking at the Wilson Centre think tank in Washington and referring to the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Napolitano runs the sprawling Homeland Security De-

partment created 10 years ago in the aftermath of September 11 and charged with preventing another such event.

She urged Congress to pass legislation governing cyber security so the government could share information with the private sector to prevent an attack on infrastructure, much of which is privately owned.

A cyber security bill failed in Congress last year after business and privacy groups opposed it. The measure would have increased informationsharing between private companies and US intelligence agencies and established voluntary standards for businesses that control power grids or water treatment plants.

New cyber legislation is being considered, but it is unclear whether it will get through the gridlocked Congress.

President Barack Obama is expected to soon issue an executive order that would set up a voluntary system to help protect some critical infrastructure and offer incentives to companies that participate.

But without a new law, companies cannot be granted any kind of legal immunity for sharing information with the government and within the industry about potential threats.

Officials have pointed to recent hacking attacks on US banks as a sign that the cyber threat is real and growing.

“The clarion call is here and we need to be dealing with this very urgently,” said Napolitano. “Attacks are coming all the time. They are coming from different sources, they take different forms. But they are increasing in seriousness and sophistication.”

Roubi L’Roubi has just bought Huntsman the tailor with his boyfriend Pierre Lagrange - the financier who left his wife for a new life. Charlotte Edwardes meets the designer behind Savile Row’s hottest tale

OUBI L’ROUBI cuts a sleek figure - long, lean and elegant - as he relaxes by the fire in Huntsman, the Savile Row tailor he has just bought with his boyfriend Pierre Lagrange, the celebrated financier. Lagrange, 50, has just waved goodbye, shaking his long, decidedly unhedgefundy mane on the way out. He looks like Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in The Lord of The Rings, except that he’s wearing a sharp tailored suit and is probably off to make a million quid before lunch.

The merger between Roubi L’Roubi’s eponymous label and the 164-year-old Huntsman brand was announced last week. It’s an ambition realised for L’Roubi, who assisted at Henry Poole a few doors down, designed for Holland & Holland, and has been on the Savile Row scene most of his working life. It’s also a relief for the couple: the focus is back on L’Roubi’s skills as a designer, rather than the relationship with Lagrange. For the past year they have endured the fixation of the press - Lagrange was married with three children before they met, and his divorce settlement, although amicable, is expected to set

records at £160 million.

The Belgian co-founder of the GLG hedge fund, Lagrange is also shrewd in property, buying the family home for £19 million in 2004, and recently selling it for £90 million to Roman Abramovich. Worth £350 million, he is listed among the UK’s 250 wealthiest, but he is also known for his generosity.

He and his estranged wife Catherine Anspach are understood to have separated in 2010 but determined to have a “civil divorce”. In that vein, the couple exchanged

“friendship” gifts in the form of two Ferraris. It’s worth noting, against the backdrop of Master of the Universe financiers slugging it out with their ex-wives in the divorce courts, that Lagrange has been the model of dignified behaviour.

But L’Roubi is a perfectionist. “In the picture they keep publishing with the story we are wearing jeans. Pierre is in a T-shirt - I mean really!”

L’Roubi shakes his head in dismay. “That one day; most of the time we’re in suits.

L’Roubi, it turns out, only has one pair of jeans (“Diesel: they are a good fit on my legs”). That’s it. The 44-yearold is more at home amid the rails of Huntsman, and I can see why. Outside, the cold is brittle; snow covers the concrete. In here it’s cosy, infused with the smell of fine tweed, wool, of leather and an old iron left on. On the wall are two stag heads, left by a customer in 1921 - he went to his club for refreshment, the story goes, and never made it back. The oversized clock above the fire might be ticking backwards for all time has moved.

It’s like a museum, I say.

“And yet profitable,” L’Roubi replies smoothly. “People come here from all over the world: the US, Japan, China, the Middle East. As a business it works. skills are something to be celebrated, protected. I feel strongly about this: there’s nowhere else I’d rather be than Savile Row.” Not even Paris? “Absolutely not!” he replies, adding that he had the chance to work with Yves Saint Laurent but turned it down. “London is much more exciting.”

Although he has spent his entire working life in fashion - starting as a right hand man to Joseph Ettedgui and later as a 50-50 partner with Tomasz Starzewski - L’Roubi is, somewhat surprisingly, a mechanical engineering graduate from Imperial College, London. “My father insisted it was Imperial,” he says. “[He] is a mechanical engineer and my mother is

a research scientist, so they thought you have to go into law, engineering or medicine.”

His parents, originally from Sudan, had a strong work ethic. “There was a lot of pressure [from my parents].

When I graduated I said I wanted to do my own thing.

My father was objective, he said, ‘Okay, if you want to do your own thing, just do it’. In hindsight it was great, but at the time it was quite tough.”

L’Roubi credits both parents for influencing his style “and aesthetic”. As a boy he trailed the fabric shops and couturiers of Europe: London, France, Switzerland and Italy with his mother. “She’d buy all the chiffons, and I would be with her looking at

the shapes, and she was discussing all the colours with me. She taught me so much about fabric and colour - she always used to say, ‘Black is very lazy’. It wasn’t the male thing to do and my father was thinking, ‘Argh!’ [he pulls a face of horror] but I was looking at all the drawings she’d do for the evening dresses she wanted.

“Even today she will say, ‘You need to make it like this,’ and draw a neckline. And I’ll say, ‘Okay mum’.” He pauses.

“And you know what? She’s always right.” His father is a conservative, classical man, with a pronounced sense of decorum. “If I showed you childhood photos we were always in little waistcoats and jackets and bow-ties,”

he says.

L’Roubi has a glorious soft, lulling storyteller’s voice, and you feel you could listen to him talking all day. I ask him who his style heroes are. “Winston Churchill,” he says - he designed a collection around the wartime prime minister based on a book that told his life story through photographs. “I did the tail suits, great coats, morning suits, his double-breasted suits.

When he was younger he was so dapper and handsome it was unbelievable. He had an incredible shape.

“There’s a famous photo that I found striking of Churchill walking with the King and members of his Cabinet: that picture could be out of a contemporary

photoshoot in a magazine.

And you think, ‘Wasn’t there a war on?’”

Another style hero is Edward VIII. “It’s amazing how beautifully dressed he was; a beautiful figure.” What about women? “His wife, Wallis Simpson. Although some of her clothes were quite masculine, and not everyone could carry them off. Then there’s Diana, Princess of Wales. She was incredible: her necklines, lengths of the dresses, the complete look from the shoes to the bag, to the little shift dress, or cocktail; beautifully groomed.

“And then again I go back to the Forties and Fifties. You find better shapes and silhouettes. There’s a lot there, a lot of detail. People often say, ‘That’s a very interesting collar or cut, is it new?’”

He rarely buys fashion magazines: “I think trends in fashion are distracting,” he says.

What about the big fashion labels? “I just don’t look,” he says. “It’s funny, but when I go out I never comment on clothes. It’s better not to register.”

He shows me around the room. Behind a desk is a man with a polite smile, his black hair oiled flat. A row of goldframed royal warrants hang high on a wall above the tailors and cutters, many second-, third- or fourth-generation. The old brass bell over the shop door tinkles to announce a customer in a great coat, smiling and stamping the cold from his feet.

“I started on the cutting table,” L’Roubi says. “I understand the patterns, the teams, the challenges that cutters and seamstresses and tailors and what is at stake.

I’ve known the fabric suppliers for ever.” In the fitting rooms are the brown patterns of Dirk Bogarde, Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier, Rex Harrison, even Givenchy.

More recently, the tailors here made Hugh Bonneville’s suits for Downton Abbey. On a table there’s a heavy old ledger showing King Edward VII’s order from September 1901 (it includes white leath-

er breeches for his postilion, four footman’s jackets, cord breeches and buck strappings for his Roughrider).

I’d half-expected a flamboyant character from his profile, I tell him. He laughs. “Everyone says that but I’m very conservative: I like baroque music. I go to the opera - and

saw me shoot on the second drive, they were all talking to me.”

Lagrange and L’Roubi now live together, he tells me, moving between their houses in London, Hampshire and New York. One day he would love to have children too.

But there is more to L’Roubi than this charming exterior.

He is a fierce campaigner: “I strongly support Human Rights Watch,” he says. “We take our rights for granted in this country but at one time someone had to fight for us to have them.”

I ask him if he means gay rights. “To me being gay or straight [in this country] is a non-issue. When there’s a fuss about it in the UK, I say, ‘Guys we have so many other things to sort out: poverty, human rights elsewhere, the economy’. Social mobility is an issue - assist people, not everyone is fortunate. In the UK there are laws that protect those who are gay.” He says: “In some countries it’s punishable by death.”

Life in art education Monday Other Events The other side of the story Brave New Culture’s Doc Nights returns on Monday with the poignant documentary A Film Unfinished (Shtikat Haarchion).

Over the past few weeks Brave New Culture have been screening creative documentaries covering a wide spectrum of topics and reflecting the stylistic range of modern documentaries. The aim of the project is to give viewers the opportunity of coming into frequent contact with current trends in creative documentary and watching films which offer different viewpoints and misunderstood aspects of the world.

Don’t miss Brave New Culture’s latest offering directed by Yael Hersonski, a story of a film that was never finished. At the end of WWII, 60 minutes of raw film, having sat undisturbed in an East German archive, was discovered.

Shot by the Nazis in Warsaw in May 1942, and labelled simply ‘Ghetto’, this footage quickly became a resource for historians seeking an authentic record of the Warsaw Ghetto. However, the later discovery of a long-missing reel complicated earlier readings of the footage.

‘Fusion’ is that musical area where well-known classical pieces and lighter show-tunes meet.

Popular English singers - Lesley Garrett, Katherine Jenkins and Russell Watson among them - have all recorded fusion and crossover music in the UK in the last decade, to expand their appeal to wider audiences, but it is a new concept for a live concert in Cyprus.

Andrew Oliver is the mastermind behind this new show, returning to his classical roots, accompanied by English-trained soprano Tina Chester in a unique and intimate blend of quality music. The tour kicked

The welcome was hospitable, the audience discerning and attentive and the gala buffet after the concert mouth-watering traditional Cypriot food.

Despite the snow, the Kathikas performance was not only a sell-out in advance but also oversubscribed and Yiannis’ taverna was packed to the rafters with another fine audience.

Organisers had to work a little harder to woo the folk at Erimi, but they eventually won them over in the second half.

The tour then moved onwards and upwards (mountain-wise) with Ross Neil joining the crew at Omodhos. This was Neil’s first performance with Fusion, before joining them in Pissouri Yialos Restaurant and Larnaca Pyla Village Tavern.

A show to look out for is the Fusion Gala at Pentaras Hall in Paphos, on Wednesday.

Prominent artist and beloved teacher Glyn Hughes’ life at the Junior School will be celebrated in a special event on Tuesday.

The Junior/Senior School Alumni Association (JUSSAA) in commemoration of the School’s 70th Birthday in 2014 and reflecting on its illustrious history and the memories it holds, is taking the opportunity to bring together the old and the new with a celebration of the life of the popular art teacher who worked at The Junior School and The English School.

Hughes worked at the Junior School from 1956 to the early ’90s, and taught countless children the wonders of light and colour in art. The children returned the favour – according to Hughes, it was not until he started teaching them that he learned a valuable lesson himself.

He says of his early years there: “In those days you could buy earth colours and I used them to paint strong abstract shapes, sometimes adding sand. The landscape was very white and the stark contrast of olive trees against the dusty ground led to a particular use of these earth colours. It was not until I taught children that I discovered full colour”.

The event will be held between 6pm and 8pm at the Junior School Hall and there will be a small exhibition of Hughes’ own personal memorabilia of his time at the School, with certain pieces

up for sale. Proceeds will go to the artist who is now in healthcare. Children under the supervision of the Art Coordinator at the School have been busily recreating his work in their own collaborative paintings. These will be available to buy, following a silent bid on the night. Proceeds of these sales will go to the Art Department of the School.

Hughes was born in Wales in 1931 and studied art at Bretton Hall, Yorkshire before taking up his teaching post in Nicosia. In 1960 he founded the first gallery in Cyprus, the Apophasis Gallery, with Christoforos Savva and then went on to create Synergy, a combination of a conceptual and environmental art event, held annually until 1974.

Since 1975, he has held a prolific collaboration with the German director Heinz Uwe Haus both in Cyprus and abroad and with the Cyprus Theatre Organisation.

His theatre sets and costume designs have covered a broad spectrum of plays from ancient Greek tragedy to contemporary playwrights and been used in Cyprus, Athens, Thessaloniki, Epidaurus and Edinburgh. Hughes has lectured extensively on Cypriot contemporary art, on Berthold Brecht, William Hogarth, German expressionism and other subjects both in Nicosia and Athens, while his work has been on display in solo and group shows from China to Australia.

Barbarian Princess (LTV3, 20.00) Also known as Princess Kaiulani - a much more responsible title because the princess in question isn’t a barbarian, that’s just what those strait-laced Victorians think. “I don’t care what they think!” cries the girl, dazzling the Brits with her regal bearing - but meanwhile, back in Hawaii, her uncle the King has died making her the heir to the throne, and the US has its eye on annexing the islands. Go home, Kaiulani, your country needs you! Q’orianka Kilcher (who played Pocahontas in The New World) is the half-Scottish, half-Hawaiian princess - Ms. Kilcher herself is half-Swiss, half-Peruvian - and this little-known costume drama got bad reviews (critics called it flat and creaky) but the com-

bination of young Q’orianka and lush Hawaiian landscapes makes for restful viewing on a slow Saturday night. Warning to the absent-minded: note that Hawaii is now part of the United States, so a downbeat ending - one in which Kaiulani is no longer princess is more or less guaranteed. Thank you. The Sitter (Novacinema1, 22.00) Jonah Hill is a babysitter. Seriously? Jonah Hill, the pudgy irresponsible buffoon with the high-pitched voice? “Would you trust this man with your kids?” asks the trailer, and it has a point - but Jonah somehow gets a gig babysitting three kids called Slater, Blithe and Rodrigo (I know, I know...) then, like Elisabeth

Shue in Adventures in Babysitting, gets a phone call that requires getting in the car and driving off with his troublesome charges, after which the night gets increasingly frenetic. Unlike Elisabeth Shue in Adventures in Babysitting, the phone call isn’t from a friend in trouble but a girlfriend with an offer of sex - just one example of how this ostensible family comedy isn’t really for kids. The trailer looks pretty awful, reaching a nadir when Jonah - driving in the car with the three kids in the back seat - gets assailed by a terrible pong and perky little Blithe pipes up “It was me; I sharted”, but I haven’t actually seen the film so it’s possible they put all the crass and stupid jokes in the trailer. Or maybe it really is crass and stupid. Made in 2011.

By Alex Lowe OWEN Farrell may have already eclipsed New Zealand fly-half Dan Carter but he warned England’s RBS 6 Nations opponents that his best is yet to come.

Farrell kicked 17 points in England’s sensational 38-21 victory over the All Blacks on December 1 and he has continued that same matchwinning form for Saracens.

Against Racing Metro, Farrell scored 32 points from 11 shots at goal and he is in pole position to be England’s Six Nations fly-half.

“I think I showed bits of what I can do against New Zealand,” Farrell said, “I can always get better.”

That is Farrell in a nutshell.

It is not lazy to compare Farrell with Jonny Wilkinson, England’s erstwhile world-beating fly-half who still strives for betterment even now, in the dusk days

of his career.

Farrell has that same attitude. There are other flyhalves in England who play the game with greater elan, but none who boast his “warrior spirit”. In short, he is a winner and that is priceless.

As a teenager new to the strange game of rugby union, having followed his father in switching from league when the family moved south, Farrell studied Wilkinson.

He had been brought up in a professional rugby environment, often accompanying Andy Farrell to training at Wigan and mixing with and learning from the best players in the world.

After he delivered that faultless performance against Racing in the Heineken Cup, England’s head coach Stuart Lancaster acclaimed Farrell as a unique young talent with qualities that bely his years.

“He has that competitive fire and temperament you look for in elite players which is quite unique among young

players,” Lancaster said.

“From the moment he came into the England camp as a 20-year-old his maturity, his game understanding, his inner confidence and temperament has shone out.

“It was that which gave me the confidence in the Six Nations last year to promote him to start.

“A proven goal-kicker is crucial at the highest level. It is not just that but his management of the game has improved, his maturity.

“He has really moved on since that New Zealand performance. He is playing in big games now and playing extremely well.”

Farrell proved his mettle for Test rugby during the 2012 championship, stepping up to play fly-half in the narrow defeat to Wales and the landmark wins against France and Ireland.

Although he suffered a dip in form and lost his place on the summer tour of South Africa, Farrell responded in

the way Lancaster knew he would.

“He understood the reasons why and we had a good chat,” Lancaster said.

“The one thing about Owen is that he never sulked or moaned, he just rolled his sleeves up and worked harder at his game. He is playing extremely well.”

Farrell duly reclaimed the prized 10 jersey during the

autumn Tests and he epitomised the character that saw England bounce back from the disappointment of two narrow defeat to demolish the world champions.

“There is a lot of fight in this team, there is a champion’s attitude,” Farrell said.

“If we take our game to the opposition, it doesn’t matter who we are playing - we are going to trouble them.”

CARMELO Anthony and Kevin Garnett showed no signs of any lingering bad blood between them as the New York Knicks snapped their 11-game losing streak in Boston with a 89-86 victory over the Celtics on Thursday.

New York’s Anthony and Boston’s Garnett had jawed at each other throughout a testy contest earlier this month, which continued after the game when Anthony tried to confront Garnett at the Boston team bus. Anthony

received a one-game suspension for his role in the incident.

On Thursday, the pair exchanged a fist bump before the tipoff and were all about business.

DAVID Hussey has been dropped from a 13-man Australia squad for the first two one-day internationals against the West Indies next week.

The Victoria and Melbourne Stars batsman has been overlooked in favour of Aaron Finch as the national selection panel seek to freshen up a batting order which struggled at times during the recent one-day series against Sri Lanka.

Australia were bowled out for 170 in Adelaide and a shocking 74 in Brisbane as they drew the five-match series 2-2. Hussey averaged 32 and, though that placed him third among Australian batsmen, he has paid the price.

Selector John Inverarity said: “The NSP was delighted with the ODI team’s impressive win against Sri Lanka in Hobart on Wednesday, in particular with Phillip Hughes’ well-crafted innings (of 138 not out) and the bowling of Xavier Doherty and Moises Henriques.

TIMO Glock has wasted no time in making a return to motorsport, after being axed by Marussia this week.

Due to financial reasons within the team, Glock departed F1 marque Marussia on Monday after three seasons, despite holding a contract.

Australian Open Li has had the perfect buildup and heads into today’s final against Azarenka brimful of confidence

By Ian Ransom CHINA’S Li Na declined to pass judgement on Victoria Azarenka’s controversial medical time-out during her Australian Open semi-final match, but said she would not do it herself when match points were at stake.

Defending champion Azarenka was accused of gamesmanship by former players and pundits for taking a nearly 10-minute medical time-out after blowing five match-points in her 6-1 6-4 defeat of American Sloane Stephens.

The Belarusian top seed denied the charge, however, saying a rib injury had led to breathing difficulties during the tense phase of the match.

Asked whether a medical time-out was appropriate when match points were in play, Li told reporters: “You know, everyone is different. Because for me, I would never use that.

“But I don’t know how (it) is (with)

another athlete or another player because everyone is different. I couldn’t say, ‘Oh, it’s wrong’ or ‘it’s right’.”

Li will play Azarenka for the women’s trophy today, with both players bidding for their second grand slam title in their second final at Melbourne Park.

MEDIA STORM Compared to the media storm surrounding Azarenka’s semi-final, sixth seed Li has had the perfect buildup and heads into the final brimful of confidence after trouncing last year’s runner-up Maria Sharapova 6-2 6-2 in their semi-final.

Li had one hand on the trophy in her 2011 final after taking the first set against Belgian Kim Clijsters, but crumbled under the pressure and took out her frustrations on rowdy Chinese spectators in the stands.

“I think this time I’m better able to handle things, because the last time was, after all, my first in a grand slam final,” said Li.

“Possibly everyone thought it was just an impossible task, or something that I didn’t dare to think about.

So amid all that attention, maybe I didn’t really focus on myself enough.”

Months after her 2011 disappointment, Li captured her sole grand slam title at the French Open, but spent a frustrating period failing to get past the fourth round at the majors until her surprising resurgence at Melbourne Park this week.

Li has credited her coach Carlos Rodriguez, who guided Belgian Justine Henin to seven grand slam titles, for helping her to recapture the belief in her game. She said having the Argentine in her corner could only help against Azarenka.

“Last time, for my team also, it was the first time to be (in) the final, so nobody tells me what I should do on the court.

“This time it’s a different story.

Carlos, before, was coaching Justine, so he has a lot of experience for the final ... So I think (it) should be okay this time.”

EIGHT-times grand slam champion Andre Agassi has been amazed by the soaring quality of men’s tennis since he retired and believes he would struggle to compete in what he believes is a golden age of men’s tennis.

On his first visit to Melbourne Park since calling time on his career, Agassi said Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic were arguably the three greatest players of all time and Andy Murray had shown he was capable of competing with them.

“It’s been amazing watching the standard continually sort of get better,” the 42-year-old American told a news conference yesterday.

“You wonder how it’s possible to continue at that sort of rate. What Federer did when he came and when I said good-bye, a lot had to do with what I knew was untouchable.

“It’s just a different standard of tennis. It’s different rules of engagement when guys can do what these guys can do.

“I don’t recognise it from a standpoint of strategy, because I counted on getting somebody behind in a point and then slowly smothering them.

“But nobody’s behind in a point. You never know when they’re behind in a point.

That would have eliminated any ability I had to move forward in the court.

“Means I would have had to be a different player, would’ve had to have a different body. It means the game has gotten a lot better.”

The Big Four of men’s tennis have won all bar one of the 28 grand slam titles over the last seven years.

Federer leads the way with 17 titles, Nadal has 11 and Djokovic five, while Murray broke into the winners’ circle for the first time at last year’s US Open.

By Simon Cambers DAVID Ferrer has won 19 titles and reached the semi-finals in three of the last five grand slams, yet for all his success, the Spaniard seems further away than ever from claiming one of the sport’s major prizes.

“I am trying to do my best every match,” the world number five lamented. “But I know they are better than me.

What can I do?”

Ferrer’s honest assessment came after a 6-2 6-2 6-1 demolition at the hands of world number one Novak Djokovic led to his latest grand slam semi-final failure at the Australian Open on Thursday.

Djokovic’s dominant performance provided yet more evidence that there is a growing “us verses them” divide on the men’s professional circuit.

Although Ferrer will replace the injured Rafa Nadal at number four when the new rankings are released on Monday, everyone knows Djokovic, Roger Federer, Nadal and Andy Murray have set themselves apart from the rest.

“You have three tours,” former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic told a small group of reporters. “One for the top four, then a second with Ferrer,(Juan Martin) Del Potro, (Tomas) Berdych and (Jo-Wilfried) Tsonga... and then a tour for the rest of the guys.

“It’s kind of funny. We all

their way into the exclusive club.

Ferrer is one of the most respected players on tour and is regarded as one of the toughest nuts to crack due to his consistency and superior fitness. However, when it comes to playing the big boys, he is found wanting, time and again.

“It is difficult to reach even one grand slam final,” he admitted. “Sometimes it does not depend on me, it depends on my opponent. When I made the semi-finals at Roland Garros, at the Australian Open and at the US Open, I lost to

the best three players.”

The chasing pack have all had their moments, with Tsonga and Berdych both beating Federer to make grand slam semi-finals last year.

Tsonga pushed Federer to five sets in their quarter-final in Melbourne on Wednesday but admitted getting past more than one of the big four is close to impossible.

“In tennis, you cannot lie,” the Frenchman said. “If they are number one, two, three and four, it’s because they deserve it and because they are the best players at the moment. That’s it.”

By Nemanja Bjedov AFTER winning six out of their last eight league matches, Omonia host the only team yet to taste defeat this season, league leaders Anorthosis, in the national football championship Round 19 opener today, with kick-off set for 2.30pm at Nicosia’s GSP Stadium.

“We face Anorthosis in what should be a great match. They are still undefeated this season, but we certainly aim to come out victorious from this match,” said Omonia coach Toni Savevski who has no injury worries ahead of the clash.

“It’s great that our fans showed so much interest for this match, but I urge them to be patient and not to pile any additional pressure on the players. We must approach Anorthosis carefully and not let our thirst for victory get the better of us from the start.

“Anorthosis being the only undefeated team this season is just one more incentive for us to get a result,” he added.

On the other side, Ronny Levy has two central midfielders Dan Alexa and Giannis Skopelitis out injured, while defender Paulo Jorge is suspended.

“We have a difficult task ahead of us as we face Omonia and we did not have much time to prepare for the match,” admitted Levy whose team needed an extra-time winner to advance to the last eight of the national cup in midweek. “But we will do everything we can to get a positive result.”

Anorthosis top the league standings with 48 points, six more than APOEL in second place and 16 points more than Savevski’s men in fifth position.

Marca stand by Mourinho allegations SPANISH newspaper Marca yesterday made a strong statement in defence of its claim that senior Real Madrid players presented club president Florentino Perez with an ultimatum demanding the removal of coach Jose Mourinho.

On Thursday, Perez called a press conference at which he angrily denied the initial Marca story, and later the two players named by the newspaper - club captains Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos - issued a statement to reject the report.

They claimed the newspaper’s account of their lunch with Perez was “entirely false” and stated their support for Mourinho.

Perez had claimed that the lunch was only to discuss player bonuses, but Marca responded yesterday with a front-page story standing by their report.

“MARCA does not lie,” its headline said.

The story stated: “The information published in this paper on Thursday regarding the dinner held last Tuesday at ACS headquarters between Florentino Perez, Jose Angel Sanchez and the Real Madrid captains Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos is absolutely true, point for point.”

The story was accompanied by a photograph of a text message from Marca’s unnamed source - who they state is a player - reiterating that the conversation touched on several matters, including Mourinho.

“We spoke about everything. General matters, the dressing room, the manager, bonuses and the like,” the text message said.

Marca had claimed that Casillas and Ramos warned Perez that several players would seek transfers if Mourinho continued as coach into another season.

To support that, Marca published fragments of a further text message which read: “It’s not just (...), I’m telling you, there are many others.”

After Real won the Primera Division at a canter last season, Mourinho has come under scrutiny this term after presiding over an indifferent run of results that has left the club trailing league leaders Barcelona by 15 points.

Pulis confident ahead of FA Cup match with City

Today’s FA Cup encounter at Britannia Stadium is a repeat of the 2011 final, which Roberto Mancini’s side won 1-0

STOKE manager Tony Pulis believes their “phenomenal” recent FA Cup record is unsurpassed by anyone and that gives him great confidence ahead of their fourth-round tie with Manchester City.

The game is a repeat of the 2011 final which Roberto Mancini’s side won 1-0, but in the seasons either side of that the Potters have been knocked out at the quarter-final stage.

Those defeats came at Chelsea and Liverpool, but with City set to visit the Britannia Stadium, where they have not won since 1999 when both teams were in the old Division Two, Pulis is bullish going into the tie.

“Our record is as good if not better than anyone else’s in recent seasons,” he said.

“You look at our record in the past three years and it is phenomenal to have only lost three games.

“Two of those were quarter-finals away

to Chelsea and Liverpool and the other the final at Wembley against Man City.”

Pulis insists there is no element of revenge for their final defeat of two years ago, a game he has never watched since.

“We just want to go out and do our best,” he added. “We understand how difficult it will be because they are a great footballing team with wonderful world-class players.

“We need to turn up and be 110 per cent and we need our supporters to be 110 per cent and I have no doubt they will turn up.”

Stoke’s traditional defensive stability has been shaken in recent weeks, with 10 goals conceded in three league matches.

Pulis believes they have ironed out some problems in training this week but knows they cannot afford any slip-ups if they hope to extend their cup run.

And he will pick a strong side despite the fact they have a match at home to

Wigan on Tuesday.

“The first goal is always key against the big teams,” he added. “What we need to do is make sure we don’t give silly goals away which we have been doing over the past few weeks.

“Hopefully we have got to grips with what the difference has been.

“We defend as a team and I think that is most probably where we have fallen down a bit, we have stopped doing our jobs.

“When we defend as a team we are very difficult to break down. If you defend as individuals it is much easier for the bigger clubs to score.”

On his team selection he added: “Of course the game against Wigan comes into our thinking, we have to stay in the Premier League so you have to balance it off.

“But the one thing we have done at this club is treat cup games, especially the FA Cup, as seriously as we can.”

By Simon Stone SIR Alex Ferguson is adamant Dimitar Berbatov should not be regarded as a £30 million failure at Manchester United.

Berbatov will return to Old Trafford today for the first time since his four-year United stay came to an end with a summer switch to Fulham.

Debate still rages amongst the Red Devils faithful about the Bulgarian’s merits.

Some point to his hat-trick against Liverpool in September 2010 or the five goals he belted past Blackburn three months later, which helped win the Golden Boot prize along with Carlos Tevez and formed part of an overall tally of 57 goals in 149 appearances, as evidence of genuine class.

Others argue a succession of lacklustre displays - and the fact Ferguson did not even give him a place on the bench for the 2011 Champions League final - is proof of a limited contribution.

In the end, even Ferguson concedes Berbatov was eased out because Javier Hernandez made more of an impact.

But he refuses to accept the 31-year-old was a waste of time.

“I don’t think Dimitar was a failure here,” said Ferguson.

“Some people like to see

players run through brick walls all the time.

“Dimitar is not that type of player, but he is very talented player and he had a decent goalscoring record here.”

The argument goes that Berbatov is better at a club like Fulham, where Martin Jol can construct a team around him, than United, where he was just one of a number of superstars.

Ferguson does not accept the verdict.

“That was not a problem for him,” said Ferguson. “The problem for him here was the way we wanted to play and the selections I had to make.

‘CHOICES TO MAKE’ “When you have choices you hope to make the right one.

Javier Hernandez had a fantastic first season with us and as time went on he became a more regular player than Dimitar.”

Managing players has always been one of Ferguson’s major strengths, which is why he is adopting the right tone with keeper David de Gea, who has been the focus of so much attention this week.

De Gea’s weak punch in the build-up to Tottenham’s injury-time equaliser last week has been condemned by Gary Neville and dismissed by Peter Schmeichel.

Ferguson must find the middle ground, which yesterday meant rejecting the entire media debate.

“I’m not getting into that at all,” he said.

“You have to listen to some idiots in the game.”

Instead, while his team enjoyed some sunshine on their short break in Qatar, Ferguson was preparing his response to the Football Association’s request for ‘observations’ about his post-match attack on assistant referee Simon Beck at White Hart Lane.

Those views were received Thursday night and Ferguson will learn on Tuesday whether or not he is going to be charged. Not that he has any great faith in the entire disciplinary system.

“I wouldn’t bet on that,” he said. “I have put my letter in, we will see what happens.”

As appears to be the case ahead of every FA Cup tie United play these days, Ferguson noted how keen he is to win the tournament for a sixth time given the last of his previous five came in 2004.

With Darren Fletcher ruled out for the remainder of the season, only Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes have won the trophy as United players, whilst Robin van Persie was a substitute when Arsenal beat the Red Devils on penalties in 2005.

WILFRIED Zaha agreed his £15 million move to Manchester United and then vowed to do all he can to ensure he gets to face Crystal Palace next season.

The 20-year-old will sign a long-term contract with the Old Trafford outfit over the weekend after he has come through a United medical.

He will then be loaned straight back to Palace, meaning he will have to maintain his focus on guiding Ian Holloway’s side back to the top flight rather than actually winning it, as would have been the case if United had kept hold of him.

FA charges Chelsea’s Hazard with violent conduct over ball boy incident CHELSEA midfielder Eden Hazard was charged with violent conduct by the FA yesterday after this week’s bizarre clash with a ball boy who prevented him from retrieving the ball.

The Belgian international was sent off in Wednesday’s League Cup semifinal second leg at Swansea City after kicking the teenager while trying to get the ball as the ball boy laid

on top of it. Both individuals subsequently apologised.

Hazard received an automatic three-match ban for his 78th-minute red card but could now face a longer suspension. He has until Tuesday to respond to the charge.

The game ended in a 0-0 draw, sending Swansea through to next month’s Wembley final against fourth

tier Bradford City 2-0 on aggregate.

“It is alleged that Hazard’s behaviour in relation to a Swansea City ball boy ... constituted violent conduct whereby the standard punishment that would otherwise apply was clearly insufficient,” the FA said in a statement.

Hazard has received plenty of sympathy from Premier League manag-

ers and players who have criticised 17-year-old ball boy Charlie Morgan for time-wasting.

While the FA’s statement did not directly condemn Morgan, it did say it wanted to “remind all clubs of their responsibilities in ensuring ball boys and other personnel around the pitch act in an appropriate manner at all times”.

But Zaha insists that will not be a problem.

And, in paying a full tribute to the club for the work they have done in his development into an England international, Zaha wants to provide the best goingaway present possible.

“I have been at Palace for more than 10 years, I will always love the club and I want to help get them back to the Premier League, particularly for the fans who have always been so good to me,” Zaha told www. cpfc.co.uk.

Azarenka bid facing head-winds ACCUSED of gamesmanship and dogged by injury, Victoria Azarenka’s bid for successive Australian Open titles today will pit her against an opponent in the form of her life and a centre-court crowd wary of any hint of bad sportsmanship.

The Belarusian will take on sixth seed Li Na, who has not dropped a set all tournament and boosted her sky-high confidence further by demolishing last year’s finalist Maria Sharapova 6-2 6-2 in the semi-finals.

Azarenka’s performance against American Sloane Stephens was less assured, and marred by controversy when the top seed took a near-10 minute medical time-out after blowing five match-points.

Azarenka returned to the court with jeers from the crowd, and after closing it out on the sixth match-point, added fuel to the fire by telling the on-court interviewer she nearly had “the choke of the year.”

Slammed on social media and grilled by reporters, Azarenka denied she had taken the time-out to calm her nerves, saying it was to receive treatment for a rib injury that was restricting her breathing.

Medical staff confirmed the treatment, according to tournament director Craig Tiley, and the 23-year-old tried to clear the air in an interview with the host broadcaster Channel Seven on Friday.

“It wasn’t really pleasant but there are

some things that you have to deal with and some things you have to learn from,” said Azarenka of the controversy.

“The important thing is just to move forward and have a great match tomorrow.”

If Azarenka requires any additional motivation today, she knows she will lose her world number one ranking to Serena Williams if she fails to take the title.

The public relations exercise is unlikely to win much of the Rod Laver Arena crowd back to her corner, especially against an opponent like Li, who lost in the 2011 final to Kim Clijsters and remains a sentimental favourite at Melbourne Park.

Li, who will turn 31 next month and is bidding to become the tournament’s oldest women’s champion, is in the shape of her life after a punishing off-season boot-camp under new coach Carlos Rodriguez, former mentor to seven-times grand slam champion Justine Henin.

Azarenka holds a 5-4 record over Li and has won their last four matches, the most recent a tight battle in October at the WTA Championships in Istanbul that ensured she would finish the year as world number one.

Li, however, is 2-0 up in grand slam encounters, having beaten Azarenka at Melbourne Park in 2011 and again during her run to the title at Roland Garros.

ndy Murray set up an enthralling Australian Open final against world number one Novak Djokovic after a high-quality victory against Roger Federer on Friday.

The 25-year-old Briton, who had never beaten Federer in a grand slam previously despite being one of the few players to hold a superior career record against the Swiss, advanced to the final with a 6-4 6-7 6-3 6-7 6-2 win in four hours.

Murray had looked the more likely to win the match from the outset with a superior service game and aggressive shotmaking, but the 17-times grand slam winner proved he was still a force to be reckoned with by forcing a fifth set.

The U.S. Open champion, however, got off to a storming start in the fifth, racing out to a 3-0 lead and after being two points from the match in the fourth set was not prepared to let the opportunity slip again.

“It’s always tough against him. Slams are when he plays his best tennis,” Murray said in a courtside interview. “When I was serving

for the match at 6-5 in the fourth, he came up with some unbelievable shots.

“I didn’t play the best tiebreak, it’s hard when you’re serving for a place in the final and a few minutes later you are into a fifth set.”

Murray produced a superb service game in the first set, broke in the third game and gave Federer only one break opportunity to take the first set 6-4 in 45 minutes.

Neither player was prepared to give any quarter in the second set as they thrusted and parried,

punched balls down the tramlines, produced delicate drop shots and running cross-court passing shots from amazing angles to force a tiebreak.

Murray was the first to blink when he allowed Federer to a 4-1 lead and while he battled back to 5-5, Federer seized the opportunity from a mistimed overhead from Murray to level.

Murray quickly dismissed the disappointment of dropping the set, picking up his serve again and increasing the accuracy and power on

his forehand.

He set up three break points in the sixth game, sealing it on his second, to take a 4-2 lead and then blasted through the next game to love to ensure he closed out the set two games later when he served his 16th ace of the match.

Federer jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set when he finally broke Murray’s serve for the first time in the fifth game, but the Scot stormed back, levelled at 5-5 and was two points away from the match while

serving.

The Swiss, through sheer force of will, forced a tiebreak and deciding set, though Murray powered through it in just 30 minutes as he broke in the opening game and held his own serve to love twice to set up the final against the Serb.

“He (Djokovic) plays his best tennis here, it’s his third final in a row and I’ll have to play pretty well,” Murray said.

“I hope it’s a painful match because that will mean it’s a good one.”

ENGLAND’S Chris Wood, whose European Tour near-misses include the 2009 Open at Turnberry, finds himself the man to catch entering the final day of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.

The 25-year-old from Bristol burst from two behind to three ahead in Doha with a spectacular third round 64 and stands at 15 under par overall.

Ryder Cup stars Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer were among the four overnight leaders, but they managed only 70 and 72 respectively Garcia after going in the water with his third shot to the par five last and taking six.

The other two halfway pacesetters, Australian Marcus Fraser and Portugal’s Ricardo Santos, fell back as well and joint second now are former PGA champion Simon Khan, also round in 64, New Zealand’s 2005 US Open winner Michael Campbell and Swede Alex Noren.

Highlight of Wood’s round was an eagle on the 548yard 10th. The 6ft 5in world number 142 had already notched up five birdies, but an eight-foot putt lifted him clear of the field and there he stayed.

After a three-putt bogey at the 12th he came back with a six-foot birdie putt two holes later and pitched even closer on the 307-yard 16th.

Although he is chasing his first victory on his home circuit Wood did capture the Thailand Open last August.

He was fifth in the 2008 Open as an amateur, but it was 12 months later that the Claret Jug was agonisingly close. He shot a closing 67, but bogeyed the last and missed the play-off between Tom Watson and Stewart Cink by one.

Last of the players who made the cut in Abu Dhabi last week, Wood told Sky Sports: “I’m very excited.

“Two behind today (at the start) I thought as long as I kept myself in the mix I was going to be really looking forward to the last round, but leading hopefully gives me a bit of a cushion.

“I wouldn’t say it was one of my best rounds, but I played very solid and was giving myself loads of chances.”
