WHAT WE DON’T USUALLY TALK ABOUT Everyone has the experience of using a public restroom. Most people find it an unfavorable place to go, but sometimes we have the urge to use it. Most people choose not to talk about the experience while a few complain about the problem, but never in details, because what we do in the restroom is very private and personal.

PROBLEM WITH FEMALE RESTROOM’S WAITING LINE Having splashless urinals and toilets not only improves the experience of using them, but also helps to keep the restroom clean. However the design is incapable of preventing users from using toilets to urinate which risks dirtying the seats, nor does it solves the problem with female restroom’s waiting line. Therefore I reached out to experts in the field for help and investigated the space of general public restroom. Interestingly, I discovered that the toilets in the male restroom are mostly used for urination instead of defecation. Maybe the toilets can be removed to create more space in male’s restroom or give that space to female’s restroom.

Concept 2.0

Integrating urinal and toilet, I decided to create more space by removing all toilets in male’s restroom. Instead, user will be using a dual-system toilet lifts up and becomes a urinal when it is not being seated. Before I continued, I got into contact with TOTO through my past internship in Tokyo, Japan.

Layout of General Public Restrooms After studying the layout of pulbic restrooms, we found out that male and female have similar sizes of restrooms. If we can take away a few toilets from male’s restroom and give that space to female’s restroom, women can have more toilets which increases the turnover rate for toilet use in order to reduce the waiting line. 5

Feedback from TOTO • It is possbile to be made and will cost around 400 USD • Whether the design is usable, it depends on the location. The qualification can vary from place to place within a state.

MORE TOILETS MEANS LESS WAITING Women go through more steps than men, meaning that they spend an average of longer time in the restroom. Instead of asking them to speed up, there’s a way to create more space and add more toilets into female’s restroom to help digest the waiting line.

Assumptions

On Home Health Care In previous research, I collaborated with my classmates Lex Zee, Tucker Hart, and Ryan Long to conduct and analyze case studies on home care. We focused on the interactions between the care recipients and the care givers, aiming to find a design opportunity to enhance the experience of both parties. After numerous studies and discussions, we summarized our assumptions:

Most care receivers live in the suburbs where they lack the access to hospitals or other daily needs.

Integrated Experience vs. Separated There are many products inventedto help patients with disability. Each is designed to assist a specific kind of physical condition, indicating that in order to perform more than one act, the patient or the caregiver needs to have the access to those equipments. However those products are either too large in size or make patients mentally feel uncomfortable. Therefore I prototyped a supportive structure for a vest, combining features from other existing products. Then I compared the experience as shown below. I am aiming to design a fashionable vest that helps the patient while not making them feel mentally ill.

PROBLEM AND AN IDEA NIKE Flyknit design uses a regular width for its shoe base, which does not fit my foot ergonomically. My feet are relatively wider than the norm, therefore I traced over the shape of the shoe and my feet to compare the shapes. As show on the right, I created a new shape that covers my feet more perfectly.

THE CHANGE IN FOOT BEHAVIOR The foot-pressure study provides a good understanding of my foot behavior. While having the shoes on, the thickness of the shoe-base changes the way I run due to the lack of ground feel. to greatly increase that, the thickness of the base should be thinner to allow a stronger feel of the contact.

CONCEPT. IMPROVEMENTS. CONCEPT I named this design Nike Snow Leopard. With thinner shoe base and the shape that fits perfectly to my feet, it is designed to be extremely lightweight to minimize the burden for running long distance and to create higher agility to the runner.

NATURAL STRIDE The elasticity of the shoe material should encase my feet perfectly while the thinner base allows me to feel the contact fully. Both combined promotes the experience of running barefoot.

BENEFITS • No shoelace. Easier to put on and off. • Thinner base allows you to feel the contact fully. • The flexibility of the upper sole provides both agility and comfort. • Integrated Gore-Tex to enhance the experience of running in extreme and wet condition. • Extremely lightweight

STAY

DRY & WARM IN THE SNOW Many states in the north of America experience very snowy wheather in winters. Adding GORE-TEX technology to the shoes provides runners the ability to stay dry and warm while jogging in the snowy and wet conidtions. Snow Leopard gives you the opportunity for people to run in extreme weather and run like a snow leopard. Agile, and fast.
