PLACEMAKING IS SPACEMAKING studio display/delay critic jane kim O b j e ct i ve Design a display screen/case to be used in the point of the Flatiron Building off Madison Square Park. D e si g n Co n si d e ra t i o n s The display structure should enhance the viewer’s understanding of the relationships of monumental landmark structures around Madison Square Park. Re su lt Three modular pieces were created based on a rubric that classified the monuments at hand. The pieces were attached following a system of joining techniques, creating a structure that consciously influences the space around it and monumentalizes the garments that inhabit it. The structure allows for a variety of storage and display options by creating varyingly dense and spaces within it.
FLAT EMBRACE studio sightline/site line critic thomas de monchaux O b j e c t i ve Design a large seating/viewing pavilion for Bryant Park. D e si g n Co n si d e ra t i o n s Use the structure as an opportunity to add an undulating vertical element to the Park that builds upon its embrace nature as a lung for the city. Re su lt A diagram was created by analyzing the existing vertical variance that occurs through Bryant Park’s stairs and ramps. The result is a space that opens up to the visitor like nested boxes. The diagram itself was then extrapolated into the form of the new structure, which encourages visitors to ascend and descend through the Park to a degree previously not possible.
MOBI(HA)US studio all fashionable paris critic babak bryan O b j e c t i ve Create an addition to the famed Palais Garnier in Paris with opportunities for public and commercial activity. D e si g n Co n si d e ra t i o n s Invert the audience/performer relationship by making the private spaces of the Opera’s ballet school public, and seemingly more public spaces cloistered. Re su lt That one structure may have two faces was explored with the basic module of the Mobius Strip. The resultant architecture implemented the Mobius as a controller of density and porosity. When the strip is in its simplest, most open form it is used to transform private spaces into public. When in its considerably more complex form, where through the process of cutting and bending the strip is multiplied and the degree to which it is curved is exaggerated, the spaces created are significantly more intimate and are strategically deployed in previously open and public parts of the building. Through this methodology, a cafÊ, fashion atelier, and observation/viewing space are introduced.
The reservoir at Passy has long been an isolated element of the urban fabric. Its sequestered nature establishes it as an island in the city, set apart from its surroundings. This quality of isolation has merits and cannot simply be done away with. Inhabiting the reservoir with an archipelago - an island network 4tg Century - brings vitality to the idea of isolation and destagnates the reservoirs otherwise static personality.
URBAN SCALE MAPPING
T H
This project aims to inhabit the urban gap created in the city’s fabric by the reservoir at Passy. Rather than minding the gap, it hopes to fall into it, fully exploring and occupying it while recognizing that the non-potable nature of the water it contains demands an element of removal and reservation. Inhabiting this gap means recognizing it for what it is, and choosing to its potential as such.
C E N T U R Y T H
1 0
It is also fundamental that this project bridge that gap at Passy, or rather transform the reservoir itself into a bridge. To that end, it asks, at what point does the water cease to be inhabitable and thenceforth must be bridge. Furthermore, to want degree can a bridge be programmed and thereafter inhabited? How can the reservoir mediate these two functions?

GAP Archipelagos are definition a series of islands seperated by water. Understanding the water as the “gap” and each island as a resultantly isolate element, we can recognize the reservoir at Passy to be both thgap and isCentury land. As both the 11isolated and inhabited conditions have been identified as meaningful, the solution to the reservoir’s duality is to inhabit it with both island and gap, water and land.
INTERFACE To what degree can two programmatic concerns be combined into one physical element? The question1190 of interface is of utmost importance. This is a study of the blurring of dividing lines, of inhabitable and inhospitable, of wet and dry, of built and natural, of sea and shore. Is it possible to feel the water without ever touching it?
O b j e c t i ve Create a masterplan for the inhabitation and reuse of an underutalized reservoir of nonpotable water in central Paris.

D e si g n Co n si d e ra t i o n s Embrace Paris’s exsiting urban structure as a collection of islands of urban significance to design a masterplan that inhabits the reservoir. Re su lt The form and topography of some of the “islands” studied in the mapping phase was borrowed to create a mixed-use development, centered around a public library. The reservoir’s water was allowed to remina and an archipelago of structures rise from it. The water was purposefully embraced as part of the design because of the exceptional quality of spaces that interacting with a body of water can result in. The terraced islands offer opportunity for interaction between programs through the planted terraces that surround each floor and interact with the city as an escapist paradise.

Analytically, URBAN the project has focused PRECEDENTS on urban connectivity, and how elements of the city overlap to create connected and disconnected zones that uncover the overserved Venice, Italy and underserved parts of he city. The creation of urban islands by the demarcation of these zones establishes a need for connectivity.

D e si g n Co n si d e ra t i o n s The structure should attempt to eschew tile’s inherent nature as a single-dimensional cladding material. Re su lt By assessing and selecting a system of connections through which hexagonal tiles may be connected to each other using plastic zip-ties, a fabric was woven that created a canopy for the pavilion. Through multiple iterations of the original design proposal the final structure and form of the pavilion was arrived upon. In addition to creating a sense of space for the project, the canopy of tiles managed to craft an audio and visual experiece that enhanced the pavilion’s function as a film and performance space.

NEIGHBORHOME studio architecture, ware st. home critic sara queen O b j e c t i ve Transform a parking lot into a twofamily home. D e si g n Co n si d e ra t i o n s Both residences must be cohesive, yet conscious of the needs and desires of each household, encourage a sense of community between residences, and maintain a small parking lot in rear. Re su lt Double-height spaces were ascribed to the most important rooms in each unit, which became the main areas for intramural gathering; a winter garden on the roof provided year-round green space, which contributed to the neighborhood and could be used as a gardening and social space for both families. Five parking spaces were retained behing the building and can be accessed through a driveway that cuts through the first floor. The result are two homes that grow closer to each other as they rise through the building until they are ultimately joined on the roof.

RISE OF THE SEAPORT client personal research project O b j e c t i ve Design a simple and evocative map to accompany a reserach project into the physical and conceptual form of the South Boston Waterfront. D e si g n Co n si d e ra t i o n s The design should intimate a connection and proximity to water, and display notable infrastructural and built features. Re su lt An infinitely alterable map of Boston’s South Boston Waterfront exploring how it could be divided into reasonably-scaled neighborhoods. It investigates the significance behind some of the names already given to the neighborhood and reconsiders the use of these names based on landmarks, transportation, and existing built form of the neighborhood. Further, it postulates how future development could and should impact the way neighborhoods grow and form.

Graphically, the map maintains the georealism of city locations, while providing a simplified representation of lines. Each white tick-mark represents 5 minutes of travel at 120-mph, thereby becoming not just a spatial, but also temporal indicator. A logo was also created to accompany the map and facilitate CommonRail’s branding.

Perhaps most uniquely, this map introduces the city’s tram lines (tranviaria), and though it doesn’t show every stop on them, it does show how they connect to the other transit modes as well as transfers between each other, resulting in the most comprehensive system map possible.

SERVICE UPDATE 2014 client massachusetts bay transportation authority (mbta) O b j e c t i ve Create the most complete and accurate map ever made of the MBTA system. D e si g n Co n si d e ra t i o n s The map must simplify the system, mediate the demands of relative georealism, provide greater clarity to Silver Line and major bus routes, and depict all planned and under construction expansions to service. Re su lt In a clean, rational manner the map depicts the proposed Green Line Extension, new Commuter Rail stations, the Silver Line Gateway project, and the Track 61 proposal. It also introduces a drastically simpler depiction of bus routes particularly around major hubs such as Dudley, Harvard, and Wonderland stations where previous maps did not make route termini clear. Walking transfers between stations are shown with walking times provided by Google Maps. Lines that are not grade-separated are distinguished from those that are for greater accuracy. Though created outside the MBTA’s mapping competition, Beverly Scott has verbally agreed to use this map as the next new system map.
SERVICE UPGRADE 2024 client massachusetts bay transportation authority (mbta) O b j e c t i ve Build upon the above map of the current MBTA system to envision an expanded subway system for the Boston of 2024. D e si g n Co n si d e ra t i o n s The future system should assume completion of all current proposals and incorporate ideas of the longproposed urban ring, while also taking into condiseration current and future development patterns, the introduction of casinos to Greater Boston, and the potential for reuse of existing track. Re su lt The proposal introduces three new subway lines: a Red Line branch that would function as the first major phase of the Urban Ring, a Silver Line Subway that would supplant and expand upon existing Silver Line BRT service while also sconnecting North and South Stations to each other as well as Franklin Park to the south and the proposed casino in Everett to the north, and a Blue Line branch using the proposed Silver Line Gateway right-of-way to expand subway service in East Boston and introduce it to Chelsea, Everett, and Malden. The Blue Line is also extended to Charles/MGH to provide a crucial connection the Red Line and diesel multiple unit (DMU) service is shown between, North Stastion and West Station, Back Bay and the Seaport, and along the Fairmont Line.

THE PAMOJA PROJECT client the pamoja project O b j e c t i ve Create a logo and set of funding documents for a documentary film to be shot in Tanzania over the summer of 2015. D e si g n Co n si d e ra t i o n s Display ideas of unity, hope, progress and prosperousness. Ensure that funding brochure is demonstrative of film’s goals, and gentle but firm in donation requests. Re su lt The logo employs the idea of pamoja - “together” in Swahili - to illustrate a unification over the Tanzanian landmass. The funding brochure introduces the film’s crew, the three women who will serves as the focus of the film, and the financial plan, all in a beautiful and simple manner. A greeting card was also designed to be used for corresepondence with the film’s crew.

DIYDOCK competition onelab oneprize team cyrus dahmubed + bryan yang O b j e c t i ve Design a 5,000 - 10,000 sq. ft. school, lab, and DIY space for the expansion of an existing coworking/ maker space into a newly renovated warehouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. D e si g n Co n si d e ra t i o n s The proposal should harness its context at the center of a functional but rapidly changing Navy Yard, proximal to drydocks. It should encourage interdisciplinary work and interaction and provide space for lectures, presentations, studios, classes, workshop, lounging, and a cafÊ. Re su lt The design foster interdisciplinary work through the immediate projection of work produced by those within the studio onto the floating Vessel overhead. The Vessel houses the lecture hall and exhibition space and becomes a dynamic representation of a diversity of creative ideas constantly in flux. The studio spaces also encourage interdisciplinary work as their ramps and tiers cause students and faculty to brush up against each others’ work, while the centrallylocated, highly-visbile lounge, the Slip, functions as a gathering and co-working space. DIYdock eschews standard forms of space and thinking to create a space for a future of design without walls.
