Style Inspired and built according to the Brutalist movement, DTC uses repeated element, geometric, striking blockish. Its brutalist structures emphasize on solid, undecorated, flat and concrete exterior to its basic nature of its construction. The strip traces all along the building are traces left by the wooden construction molds and were left on purpose to fulfil the concept of Brutalist Architecture.

Shading Dewan Tunku Canselor is located in Malaysia which has a hot and humid temperature throughout the year. So as to minimise heat gain within the building the architect, Kington Loo, adapted a concept of ‘brise-soleil’ in the facade design.

Ventilation By using the ‘brise-soleil’ in the facade of the building, natural ventilation is attained. Due to the double volume of the hall and the foyer, stack effect is achieved, allowing the passage of fresh air.

Repetition The repetition of the brise-soleil serves as an aesthetic value and function to the building. The repeated cylindrical stairwells also breaks the monotonous repetition of the rectangles to create a visual interest.

Contrast The water feature element on the north east side of the building, give a sense of reviving and refreshing, contrasting with the concrete, dull, brutalist style. Thus acting like decorative element.

Materiality The natural color of the raw concrete lends to a rustic look and making the appeal of the building contrasting with the other building.

Green Features The green features aid to give a feeling of vitality and calm and smoothing, bringing life to the building.

Conservation As the roof was damaged during the fire, after the conservation work, an entire pitched roof over the great hall was replaced and improved with better insulator and strength quality.

The great hall flooring system was replaced with new durable timber flooring. Old windows was replaced with double glazing window system.

Addition During the restoration of Dewan Tunku Canselor, the stage area was extended with additional features such as movable stage.

Daily Practice Activities

Rehabilitation After Dewan Tunku Canselor has been successfully revived, proposals of gallery, educational and research activities were suggested.

Accessibility As an addition to the building, a ramp was built for disabled users to the main entrance.

Security So as to prevent future damage or similar fire incident, a new M&E system with fire protection facilities (sprinklers) were installed along with security cameras.

(OPEN PLAN)

Angkasapuri was designed in international style but there are some difference with European and Western country to fit in with the local context. Shading Device A repetition of shield to act as a shading device instead of glass and steel facade. Application of it causes the building to look solid which is reverse of volume over mass that using lightweight material. But 5 points of Architecture by Le Corbusier were applied in it, Pilotis Column were used to lift the front part of building to create pathway for vehicles. Open Plan Concrete columns were used as structural core to carry every horizontal slab as floor without supporting walls. Free Facade Design Facade of Wisma Angkasapuri does not act as structural function but shading device. While apart from Wisma Angkasapuri, the other buildings of Angkasapuri were built in a modern style, which is not that eye-catching as Wisma Angkasapuri.

The weather in Malaysia is constant which is hot, humid and raining, so there is some artistic interventions were designed not just for aesthetic purpose but also served climatic adaptation purpose. 1. The facade of Wisma Angkasapuri are repetition of unique shape that is inspired by horseshoes crab shell, it makes the building look unique while providing sun shading function.

2. Besides, curved barrel roof designed was used in the reception hall to replace flat roof, it looks unique while it also act as a shading device that to constrain sun’s ray from entering the window. 3. Repetitive of circles as metal frame that attached in the curved barrel roof is an ornamentation which became visual richness when looking at the building. It also get to enhance the shading function. 4. The contrasting of floor plan make Wisma Radio special and easy to recognise as it is like a star shape geometry. It was not designed according International Style like Wisma Angkasapuri.

The daily practice of Angkasapuri are depending on the space layout and usage. As Angkasapuri is a government building, it required proper registration and visitation letter to get permission from the office to access the building. But even so, there are still some places are totally private that does not allowed visitors. Wisma Angkasapuri Reception Hall (Public Space) - Wisma TV ( Semi Private) - Administrative Building ( Private) Wisma Radio

- Auditorium ( Public Space) - Engineer Department (Semi Private) - Programming and administrative ( Private)

Wisma Berita RTM (Private) International Broadcasting Centre (Private) While the space layout is according to the usage of users. For example, Wisma Angkasapuri have the reception hall in the middle as a connection of Wisma TV and admins building, so it can reduce the overload of people when there is event. As for the Wisma TV, auditorium is slightly apart from the main building to make sure that there would not be having any noise towards the main building.
