METROPOLIS WITH THE PAROUSIA OF NATURE
ABSTRACT
Singapore has been transforming from a small seaport into a bustling metropolis for several decades. During this rapid development, Singapore generates its own special urban fabrics. It is not a single picture of buildings or nature; it is a harmonious mixture of many different elements instead. There are multiple elements in the city, for instance, tower buildings, water, seaport, natural reserve, and vertical green. In addition, Singapore is wellknown as both a garden city and a financial center, outstanding with vegetation and skyscrapers. These highlighted contrasting elements, organic and artificial, offer a subtle blend of the natural environment with modern infrastructures. That leads to a unique image of Singapore. Furthermore, Singapore is an island city, fulling of profound attractions.
We can see how buildings and nature correspond with as well as separate from each other in this city, sometimes clear, sometimes blurred. The ambiguity in the resonance of the city contains the infinite potential to show different angles of Singapore.
In this dense city, each element is close to each others. We not only can enjoy the tranquility of nature, but also easily return back to the modern cityscape. The boundaries between different environments are sometimes clear, sometimes blurred. The boundaries are also the most active spaces to keep changing. It is because all the areas have been expanding all the time, colliding with each other, and corresponding with each other. Those may be harmonious, chaotic, contrasting, and resonant. This photographic series is aimed to present this interesting dialogue happening within the boundaries of different areas.
Chapter 1 focuses on the cityscape in the nature; Chapter 2 emphasizes the landscape in the metropolis; Chapter 3 draws attention to waterscape between the city and nature. Capturing the interesting dialogue between greenery, water and buildings could offer an innovative perspective to observe the city to the audience. It may be able to evoke the audience to contemplate where the pure tranquility is in this city with rapid development.
