Retail / Economic District ; This district is the busiest in this micro region. It is filled almost totally with coarse grained infrastructure, most of which being shopping centres or office buildings. With a 2-line MRT station and the greatest amount of transport nodes, it acts as a hub in the region.

The shophouses of Kampong Glam have stood there since the early 1900s. Today, they are packed with commercial activities such as cafes and thrift shops. Several Islamic shops of old also remain in the area.

The Landmark infrastructures in Area 1 have existed since 1958. They are prominent features in the region, standing detached from their surrounding terraced buildings and boasting architectural features like domes or large courtyards. Whilst they may still exist as landmarks and memorable works of architecture today, their monumental nature was definitely of greater significance in the 20th Century.

The entire shophouse precinct was an Islamic cultural hub in 1958, with today’s Malay Heritage Centre being the residence of Singapore’s old Malay royalty.

Like the paths and landmarks around the area, Haji Lane and its shophouses have also existed since 1958. Granted, it has only grown into the node it is today after the 1970s after its commercialisation. Prior to that, it served as lodges for Malay pilgrims and housing for lower-income Malay families till the 1960s and 70s.

Jalan Sultan serves as an edge of the area, demarcating the end of the small shophouse plot. On one side of the road rest the belts of shophouses in area 1. The coarse grained buildings of Textile Centre, Sultan Plaza and City Gate lie on the other side.

The 5-Foot ways of the shophouses and the narrow 1-2 laned roads establish a dense network of circulation throughout the area. The belts of storefronts and their intermediate back alleyways also create a hierarchy of primary, secondary and tertiary paths along the grid-like building formations.
URBAN MORPHOLOGY
NOLLI PLAN
These close quartered, narrow but long circulatory chains funnel users through different streets and lanes as they traverse the region. The landmarks: Masjid Sultan and the Malay Heritage Centre break this pattern, standing alone and detached, hence contributing to their memorability. All this contribute to the area’s conservatory characteristic.
LEGEND: Boundary for Area of Interest 18
The second Area of Interest is the residential area situated immediately around the site. The HDBs in the area are part of Singapore’s first generation of public housing. They finished construction in 1967, and were inhabited by the residents of the kampongs that stood on the site prior to their construction.
URBAN MORPHOLOGY
SECOND AREA OF INTEREST
Apart from overpopulation, the HDBs also sought to address the issue of races segregation by housing different ethnicities within a same compound.

The paths of Area 2 have seen major change since 1958. The primary roads: Beach Road, North Bridge Road and Jalan Sultan existed back then, but the secondary roads have completely changed. There previously was a small conglomerate of kampongs within the primary roads. These kampongs would be of varying ethnicities, and their adjacent roads named after their race or place of origin. An example would be Java Road.

Beach Road acts as a perceived edge for Area 2. The 6-laned road, coupled with the differing infrastructure on both sides create a notion of separation. Users who travel from one side to the other experience a zone-like crossing.

The infrastructure in this area are largely of Medium grain rectangular HDB blocks. They stand relatively apart from one another, seemingly arrayed according to a predetermined orientation. Some of the blocks are solid on the ground floor aside from 2 lift lobbies running through the mass’ breadth, whilst others have open-planned layouts for shops and commercial frontages.
URBAN MORPHOLOGY
NOLLI PLAN
The spaced out circulation, public amenities like playgrounds, fitness corners and pavilions and old shop fronts create the area’s characteristic of a late 20th century residential neighbourhood.
LEGEND: Boundary for Area of Interest 29
Kampong Glam as a whole has the appearance of a matured neighbourhood. Most of its infrastructure are of dated early tropical or post modernist styles. Furthermore, it's been predominantly populated by senior citizens, either residing in the region or frequenting it for their own sacred reasons.
URBAN MORPHOLOGY
GENIUS LOCI
The programme of the spaces and zones do, however, bring a certain vibrancy to the monotony. The shophouses along Haji Lane and Arab street have been popular attractions for youth, and the not to be forgotten Golden Mile Complex serves as a hub for the local Thai Community. This puts together an interesting narrative of a region with distinct polarities between their subzones, ultimately being bonded together and identified by their shared history and evolution.
