TIPS TO HELP YOU START A BUSINESS in the New Year By d-mars.com News Provider

illions of new businesses

nationwide each M areyearformed and women of color are

leading the charge. The Wells Fargo Impact of Women-Owned Businesses Report found that Black women are one of the fastest-growing groups of entrepreneurs in the United States, representing 14.8% of all women-owned businesses, and Hispanic/ Latina women represent 14.3% of all women-owned businesses. Steve Hall, vice president of Economic Development and Small Business Lending for Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), a non-profit that connects under-invested people and places with hard-to-tap resources, shares these tips for ensuring your business will succeed in the new year

and beyond: 1. Increase financial literacy. It’s important to have a solid working knowledge of credit, bookkeeping, projections, financial statements, reporting, and financing to help you make sound business decisions. Free educational resources like Hands-on Banking can get you started. 2. Be passionate. Running a successful small business requires round-theclock dedication, so be sure it’s something you enjoy and are passionate about. 3. “Run the idea.” Speak with a business banker about your business plan, ways to fund your operations and how to establish credit. A strong relationship with a business banker can help set you up for success.

They can guide you toward the right financial products for every stage of the business, identify potential barriers you may face, help you find capital and help you avoid predatory debt collectors. Likewise, a certified public accountant can advise you on what paperwork you need to file to start your business, how to structure your business and how to manage monthly financials and taxes. They can also help connect you with the right vendors. 4. Seek out capital. Capital is the fuel to start and grow your business. More credit options can be the difference between survival and closure. In addition to traditional lending, working with community development financial institutions and minority depository institutions can create an ecosystem of support that provides additional avenues to accessing capital. These institutions specifically work with underserved entrepreneurs, including those in low-to-moderate income areas and minority populations. Thanks to new efforts, more small businesses have a shot at success. Through its Open for Business Fund, Wells Fargo is helping to create greater access to capital and resources. This industry-leading effort has donated roughly $420 million to nonprofits that serve small businesses. Since the fund was created, Wells Fargo has given grants directly to community development financial insti-

In the program’s third and final phase, the focus is on funding nonprofits to assist small businesses in growing equity in their business, with money going to strategies such as acquiring property and equipment as part of physical business improvements. 5. Solicit trusted advice. Check out LISC’s webinars, local networking events, and online resource center. No matter what industry you’re in, SBA.gov and your local chamber of commerce can also be helpful. For guidance in accessing capital, lean on Business Development Organizations, which serve as trusted ambassadors to underinvested communities, guiding business owners in accessing loans and resources. “It takes passion and grit to start and grow a business. It also takes planning, important financial decisions and a series of legal steps,” says Hall. “Fortunately, a range of resources exist to guide an entrepreneur through the logistics of turning their dream into a reality.”

What to Look for When You Need a Law Firm

Business Owners Hesitation in Succession to Children

By d-mars.com News Provider

By d-mars.com News Provider

et’s face it, no person or business gets a thrill out of hiring a law firm. Fortunately, peer-reviewed rankings have simplified the process. Best Lawyers, which has been tracking trends and innovations in the legal industry for more than four decades, serves as a trusted resource for identifying what it takes to be a preeminent law firm in the United States. Their recently released 14th annual rankings of Best Law Firms, found at bestlawfirms. com, provide keen insight, not only into the most successful law firms but also the key factors to keep an eye out for when going through the reliably trying task of retaining counsel.

L

Having those insights can be key to effective succession planning.” All this is not to say that parents don’t want their children to succeed. The large majority (67%) want their children to live up to their family’s standards of wealth and success, and many go so far as to assist them financially with education, car purchases, healthcare expenses and even travel and vacations. Nine out of 10 business owners attribute their own financial success specifically to hard work and determination. Two-thirds (67%) cite the advantages of a good education, and over one-third (37%) acknowledge the importance of living in the land of opportunity, while a quarter (23%) acknowledge the role of luck. Helping to move this success down through family lines tends to get trickier for some, though. While 73% believe they have succeeded in passing down their financial values, 45% worry about their children not knowing how to build wealth of their own, and a third (35%) report it has been hard to transmit their work ethic to their children. So how can one plan for the future in a way that may help protect the business while promoting family harmony? Leaning on a wealth and investment management firm that has expertise in succession planning, estate planning strategies and family dynamics can help families forge a clear path ahead.

eing a business owner is considered an “American Dream” by many, yet when it comes to succession planning, a recent survey reveals that not everyone feels the same way about passing the torch onto their children. The survey was conducted by Versta Research on behalf of Wells Fargo in January and February 2023, and studied the attitudes of 1,008 “wealth creators,” which were defined as U.S. adults aged 50 or over who have at least $1 million in investable assets and earned (not inherited) most of those assets. Thirtynine percent of business owners say their business has been an important source of meaning and purpose in their lives, yet half (52%) don’t want their children to inherit and succeed them in running the company. And among parents, nearly all (93%) want their children to forge their own path, rather than follow in their footsteps. “It may sound very much like the plot of a television drama, but many investors lack confidence in their children’s ability to step into their shoes. Others believe handing over the keys to the castle will be a disincentive to earning their own financial success,” says Michael Liersch, head of Advice & Planning for Wells Fargo. But as Liersch points out, some wealthy creators feel they are doing their child a favor. “Many parents are “What’s most important is that everyone is simply recognizing that their children’s strengths and aligned and there are no surprises,” added interests are not aligned with the family business. Liersch. “Without a thoughtful conversation and formal plan, assumptions can be made and disruption to family dynamics are highly likely.”

HERE IS SOME OF BEST LAWYERS’ ADVICE: 1. Does the firm use the latest technology? Right now, even the legal profession is abuzz with generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI) tools. With its ability to parse information more quickly, gen AI offers the immediate potential to automate routine tasks such as research; summarizing long, complex content; and writing first drafts of simple documents such as NDAs. All of which can save both time and money. Smart firms are closely watching regulations and any risks that this new technology may bring, all while using it for the benefit of the firm and its clients. 2. What do other legal experts think about the way they do business? There are better options available than just word of mouth when choosing legal representation. After all, hiring a law firm isn’t like choosing which novel to download next. Through Best Lawyers’ research process, a firm’s performance is assessed by its peers, ultimately helping consumers make better-informed decisions. Why is this important? At its heart, a robust peer-review process like Best Lawyers asks legal professionals to answer this key question: “If you had a legal issue and could not represent yourself, what firm would you hire?” This peer-review method is critical and offers a straightforward way to help identify the most trusted firms. 3. Does the law firm embrace diversity? Today’s leading law firms know that to be successful, the makeup of their staff should represent the communities they serve. Inclusion is a necessary element of well-rounded representation because a team with different backgrounds and experiences will bring diverse points of view to solving clients’ unique and complex challenges. Fortunately, in recent years there has been an uptick in law firm diversity. In 2023, 21.6% of attorneys were members of traditionally underrepresented ethnic groups, according to an American Lawyer survey. That’s up more than 20% from the same survey just three years prior. As a consumer, consider asking a law firm about its diversity track record. The best law firms will not only expect the question but welcome it. Source: StatePoint

DIVERSE SUPPLIERS Are Good for Business and the Community By d-mars.com News Provider

n the current landscape, there is a heightened emphasis on supporting businesses actively engaged in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, offering unique prospects for diverse suppliers. JPMorgan Chase is committed to fostering qualified diverse businesses, defined as those with at least 51 percent ownership and operation by historically underrepresented groups. The bank has a focus on minorities, women, military veterans, disabled veterans, service-disabled veterans, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBT+ community. In a seven-year tenure at JPMorgan Chase, I transitioned from leading the Global Philanthropy team’s Small Business division to overseeing supplier diversity. My career has consistently revolved around building programs and partnerships that promote economic growth, particularly for underrepresented businesses. Supplier diversity, with its transformative impact beyond transactions, aligns with my passion for advancing opportunities for businesses to scale and achieve their dreams. Supplier diversity is valuable for companies in several ways. It opens doors to innovation, bringing fresh perspectives and solutions to business challenges. It also contributes to talent acquisition and retention, as employees, especially millennials and Gen Z, seek alignment with corporate values. Moreover, supplier diversity fosters wealth generation in diverse communities by creating job opportunities, ultimately benefiting the overall economy. To enhance the sustainability of supplier diversity, I advocate for a shift from a transactional approach to a focus

I

on supplier development. Building deeper relationships with small and underrepresented businesses allows for identifying additional ways to support their growth, such as creating connections to networks that lead to contract opportunities, capital, and resources. Beyond traditional procurement areas, like manufacturing, I propose expanding the consideration of diverse businesses in technology and professional services. This intentional focus on future-facing industries can identify businesses poised for rapid growth, helping address economic disparities, including the racial wealth gap. To amplify the impact of supplier diversity, we’ve engaged over 100 top suppliers, termed “Gold Suppliers,” to enhance their own diversity programs over a three-year period. Recognizing varying levels of program maturity, we provide mentoring, coaching, and education tailored to each supplier’s needs. Over the past two years, nearly 90% of Gold Suppliers committed to spend increases, generating over $6 billion in new spend with underrepresented businesses. For diverse businesses seeking to collaborate with large companies like JPMorgan Chase, certification by recognized organizations, such as the National Minority Supplier Development Council or the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council, is crucial. Certification, combined with relationship-building efforts, enables businesses to leverage corporate networking events and online registration portals to showcase their capabilities and history. While success may take time, developing long-term strategies and cultivating relationships with procurement teams can lead to fruitful business contracts. Source: NNPA

collaboration involving three Houston-area school districts has introduced a vital resource for students with autism or intellectual and emotional disabilities. Funded by a $1.3 million Texas Education Agency grant, the Therapeutic Education Center, located at the Friendswood ISD Annex Building, offers a secure and productive haven for students in kindergarten through 12th grade with behavioral needs in Friendswood, Pearland, and Alvin ISDs, according to Jamie Rogers, the principal of the center. Situated at 402 Laurel Drive in Friendswood, the annex building serves as a centralized location for the districts to unite and provide resources closer to home for special education students, minimizing travel burdens. Rogers emphasized the challenges of sending students to schools far away, stating, “They might be on a bus for two hours a day, which is not good for any student, but especially a student with these unique needs.” The center fosters engagement among staff from all three districts, maintaining a lower student-teacher ratio with tailored educational programs, individualized learning tools, and instruction. Currently serving six students, the center includes two teachers, four paraprofessionals, a board-certified behavior specialist, and a nursing assistant. Distinct systems are in place to ensure student safety during behavioral modification, addressing needs regular campuses may lack resources for. The ultimate objective is to reintegrate students back into their zoned campuses. For instance, Rogers shared a case where the center worked with a student for two years, reinforcing academic aspects while guiding them toward an individualized path, such as connecting them with sports. Progress is evaluated every nine weeks, and efforts are made to find jobs for older students in the community. The grant, awarded to Friendswood ISD, sustains the initiative for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years, reflecting a commitment to keeping students connected to their community in a smaller setting and not losing sight of the vision to return them to their campus. “These kids are staying connected to their community in a small setting,” Rogers said, per reports. “We are not losing that vision to get them back to their campus.”

“Mothers raise their daughters and let their sons grow up.” - African Proverb In the context of the upbringing hierarchy leading to adulthood, historical and gender role patterns reveal that young girls are typically raised with restrictions to become the caretakers of the household, whereas young boys often experience greater freedom. While a mother can nurture and guide her son, there are limits to how much she can impart about manhood. It’s important to note that this narrative doesn’t apply universally to every household, as mothers express love for their children in diverse ways.

Prairie View TOPS TEXAS HBCUS in VALUE A&M University By d-mars.com

martAsset’s recent ranking affirms what residents of “The Hill” have long asserted: Prairie View A&M University holds the top spot among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Texas. Beyond this recognition, SmartAsset also designates PVAMU as the fifth best-value university in the entire Lone Star State, with only Rice University, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Houston, and the University of Texas at Dallas securing higher positions, per reports. This acknowledgment resonates strongly with PVAMU alumni, who express a deep sense of connection and satisfaction with their alma mater. According to alumna Sharifa Jones Rankins, PVAMU feels like a family, providing excellent support, quality degree programs, and a perfect balance between education and enjoyment. Select alumni emphasize the familial atmosphere at PVAMU, describing it as a place where individuals are treated like family, and the school’s true legacy lies

PVAMU stands out with an average scholarship and grant offering of just over $10,000, tuition slightly exceeding $12,000, and a median starting salary for graduates reaching around $62,000. PVAMU has maintained strong rankings in their achievements and recognitions, per SmartAsset in the following:

TEXAS SCHOOLS LACK BLACK EDUCATORS IN THOUSANDS By d-mars.com

urnie Roper, Lackland ISD’s Black superintendent and San Antonio native, highlights the importance of Black educators but emphasizes the current focus on addressing the overall teacher shortage. Bexar County faces a deficit of Black teachers, with nearly 12.5% of Black students attending schools without any Black teachers in 2021-22. “We’re just trying to get teachers. Period,” he said. Despite hiring over 200 Black teachers since 2017-18, the percentage of Black students without Black teachers has risen. The significance of Black representation in schools is supported by research showing p o s it i v e outcomes for stud e n t s with Black teachers, such as increased college attendance and lower dropout rates. Kimberly Simpson, Texas Alliance of Black School Educators’ Marketing and Communications Chair, stresses the challenges students face, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact

B

on learning and emotional development. Beyond pandemic issues, topics like Critical Race Theory and Black Lives Matter influence education, emphasizing the need for educators who can relate to students on cultural and emotional levels. “When you see someone who looks like you [are giving] you instruction, that matters. When you are with someone who can be culturally sensitive to you, that matters,” Simpson detailed per reports. “[... A minority teacher] can make that connection. If you can make that connection, then you’re more prone to be able to reach a student academically and then you’re more prone to have student success.” Statewide, Texas grapples with over 3,000 schools lacking Black teachers, affecting 27% of schools with Black students. Bexar County leads in the percentage of schools without Black teachers, surpassing other counties with the highest Black student enrollment. To address this, Burnie Roper suggests increasing teacher salaries and fostering an education-friendly environment to attract quality individuals to the teaching profession. While districts aim to diversify staff, Kimberly Simpson stresses that educators prioritize impact over demographics. She advocates for current teachers seeking professional learning opportunities to understand diverse learning styles and cultures, fostering positive impacts on students’ lives.

VEIN DISEASE SYMPTOMS in Minority Healthcare

By d-mars.com Dr. Tonie Reincke

enous insufficiency, commonly known as Vein Disease, can affect individuals across diverse backgrounds, yet there exists a need to address potential disparities in awareness and healthcare access, particularly within minority communities. This article explores the symptoms and clinical presentation of vein disease while emphasizing the importance of proactive health management in minority populations. Vein disease is commonly exhibited through various symptoms: leg pain, swelling, varicose veins, tenderness, fatigue, skin changes, ulcers, restless leg syndrome, thickening of the skin, and leg cramping. Some individuals may not exhibit obvious symptoms, highlighting the importance of thorough examinations by healthcare professionals. Without timely diagnosis, symptoms can escalate, significantly impacting a person’s quality of life. Early recognition of vein disease symptoms is paramount for optimal health outcomes. A key contributor to healthcare disparities is limited access, stemming from factors like lack of insurance, limited availability of quality vein doctors, and financial constraints. At Reincke Vein Center in Sugar Land, free consultations are offered to new patients and health insurance benefits are reviewed with the patient before they come into the office. They also offer payment plans with no interest and self pay options. Effective communication with patients is vital, especially considering health literacy challenges prevalent among minorities. Limited understanding of healthcare information and the importance of timely care can lead to delays in seeking medical help. fully educated on what is going on and acknowledges the patient’s concerns. Language barriers further exacerbate disparities, impacting the accuracy of symptom reporting and education. Reincke Vein Center’s diverse staff, fluent in Spanish and Vietnamese, facilitates effective communication, ensuring patients can ask questions and comprehend treatment options in their native language. Addressing disparities requires a comprehensive approach, encompassing cultural competence training, community outreach, and education initiatives to improve health literacy. Dr. Reincke actively engages in community outreach, offering free ultrasound scans at health fairs, providing live medical advice on VieTV, participating in LGBTQ Houston Chamber events, and advertising on Univision and Telemundo. Early recognition of vein disease symptoms is pivotal for optimal health outcomes, yet healthcare disparities in minority communities often result in delayed diagnosis and treatment. Bridging these gaps requires a concerted effort from healthcare professionals, community leaders, and individuals alike. By promoting cultural competence, improving health literacy, and dismantling barriers to healthcare access, we can create an inclusive environment that facilitates timely medical intervention for everyone. Reincke Vein Center’s commitment to providing equal care regardless of race or gender aligns with the broader healthcare community’s efforts to bridge disparities. The ongoing strive for equitable access to early diagnosis and treatment remains imperative, ensuring individuals receive the care they need irrespective of their background or ethnicity. Alzheimer’s Disease in 2023 By d-mars.com

the FDA — would offer a noninvasive and cost-effective option for identifying the disease.

023 was a landmark year for Alzheimer’s disease research, including advancements in treatment, risk factors, and diagnosis. Here are five significant discoveries made this year: There are three new approved treatments for Alzheimer’s, with a fourth on the way.

2

First-ever U.S. county-level Alzheimer’s prevalence estimates. The first-ever county-level estimates of the prevalence of Alzheimer’s dementia — in all 3,142 U.S. counties — were reported at AAIC 2023. For counties with a population of more than 10,000 people age 65 and older, the highest Alzheimer’s prevalence rates are in:

In July, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted traditional approval for Leqembi for mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s and mild Alzheimer’s dementia. This treatment slows cognitive decline and can help people with early Alzheimer’s maintain their independence. In June 2021, the FDA granted accelerated approval to Aduhelm for the same purpose. At the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) in July 2023, Lilly reported positive results for a third similar treatment: donanemab. The company expects FDA action in early 2024. In May, the FDA approved the first treatment for agitation in people with Alzheimer’s — brexpiprazole.

• Miami-Dade County, Fla. (16.6%) • Baltimore City, Md. (16.6%) • Bronx County, N.Y. (16.6%) • Prince George’s County, Md. (16.1%) • Hinds County, Miss. (15.5%)

Hearing aids could slow cognitive decline for at-risk older adults. In the largest clinical trial to investigate whether a hearing loss treatment can reduce the risk of cognitive decline, researchers found that older adults with hearing loss cut their cognitive decline in half by using hearing aids for three years. The intervention included hearing aids, a hearing “toolkit,” and ongoing instruction and counseling. Though the positive results were in a subgroup of the total study population, they are encouraging and merit further investigation. Blood tests for Alzheimer’s are coming soon. Blood tests show promise for improving how Alzheimer’s is diagnosed. Advancements reported for the first time at AAIC 2023 demonstrate the simplicity and value to doctors of blood-based markers for Alzheimer’s. Blood tests are already being implemented in Alzheimer’s drug trials. And they are incorporated into proposed new diagnostic criteria for the disease. Blood tests — once verified and approved by

steoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and affects over 32.5 million U.S. adults. OA is a degenerative joint disease that causes pain and stiffness and can lead to limited function. OA of the knee is the most common type, affecting more than 12 million Americans ages 65 and older. The signs and symptoms of OA can vary but commonly include joint stiffness, pain during activity, and cracking or creaking noises around the joint. “Although there is no treatment that can reverse OA, physical therapy can help individuals manage the symptoms conservatively through appropriate and individualized exercise programs and other treatments provided by physical therapists,” said Rachel Prusynski, PT, DPT, Ph.D., a spokesperson for the American Physical Therapy Association. “Physical therapy may also help to prevent a worsening of OA and the need for invasive procedures and prescribed pain medications.” Backed by research. Many studies have shown that physical therapy is effective in helping manage OA. Now, a new report released by the American Physical Therapy Association provides another reason to choose physical therapy for OA of the knee over commonly used steroid injections — the overall value that physical therapy delivers to patients and the health care system. In addition to saving health care dollars, physical therapy helps patients increase mobility, balance, strength, and flexibility, ultimately contributing to better health and lowering the risk of conditions that could require additional health care services down the road. People with OA should increase their physical activity routines more gradually than those without OA and should avoid high-impact exercises (think jumping or pounding movements on the joints).

Certain characteristics of these counties may explain the higher prevalence, including older age and a higher percentage of Black and Hispanic residents, which are communities disproportionately impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, these statistics can help officials determine the burden on the health care system, and pinpoint areas for culturally-sensitive caregiver training.

Prusynski suggests five ways to manage OA symptoms through movement:

or people living with chronic autoimmune conditions, such as Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), regular patient-doctor visits are an important part of tracking symptom progression and staying on top of care. Findings from a recent survey of 116 U.S. adults living with TED reveal a significant gap in communication at these appointments - with only 36% feeling comfortable enough to share the impact of their TED symptoms on their emotional well-being. TED is a rare autoimmune condition that causes debilitating symptoms including eye bulging, eye pain, pressure behind the eyes, dry or watery eyes, light sensitivity, double vision and even vision loss in some cases. It most often occurs in people who have thyroid conditions, like Graves’ disease (hyperthyroidism) or Hashimoto’s (hypothyroidism), and typically affects people aged 40+. Women are up to five times more likely to develop TED than men, and smoking increases the risk of developing TED eightfold.

F

The Unspoken Toll of TED on Daily Life According to a new national survey of 116 adults diagnosed with TED, when TED symptoms are at their worst, a majority have trouble with common everyday tasks, such as: using a mobile device (81%), watching TV (73%), reading books or magazines (72%), going out in public (67%) and doing their job (66%). And while more than a quarter of adults living with TED (29%) reported having to stop driving at night due to TED symptoms, almost half (49%) admitted they would not report a change of this sort to their doctor. In fact, while 89% of adults with TED are likely to report physical TED symptoms during a routine check-up, only a third (36%) of patients shared they would report how TED was impacting their emotional well-being (e.g., experiencing anxiousness, depressive feelings, decreased self-confidence, or feelings of anger or frustration). Doctors are Left in the Dark A new survey of 102 ophthalmologists, endocrinologists, oculoplastic surgeons and strabismus specialists and surgeons who treat or refer for TED across the U.S. found that nearly one in four doctors (22%) reported their TED patients “rarely” or “never” bring up the impact of TED on their emotional well-being. The course of the conversation could change how their condition is treated, however. Of those surveyed, doctors reported they would start a new treatment, consider modifications or discuss other options when a patient reported symptoms affecting their emotional well-being (83%), independence (78%), or personal life or relationships (72%). “I used to think my anxiety was just something I had to deal with, I didn’t want to burden my doctors with it so I didn’t talk about it. I realize now that sharing how my TED symptoms affected my day-to-day life and my mental health, would have helped my doctor better understand the full effect that TED had on every part of my life. I believe it would have helped me get the best possible care.” - Gail S., who lives with TED. Open and Honest Dialogue Can Go a Long Way Doctors and patients each play an important role in creating open dialogue. The more doctors can ask about the impact of symptoms on emotional well-being, and the more people living with TED or other conditions are willing to share, the better their care can be. Addressing Fibroids in Black Women’s Health:

Comprehensive Approach contribute significantly to the challenges Black women face in managing fibroids. Eliminating these barriers is integral to ensuring equitable healthcare.

By d-mars.com

lack women’s health is a critical and multifaceted aspect of healthcare that demands attention, particularly concerning the prevalence of uterine fibroids. Fibroids, non-cancerous growths in the uterus, pose a significant health challenge for Black women, who experience them at rates much higher than their white counterparts. This article explores the various factors contributing to this health disparity, the impact on women’s lives, and the imperative for comprehensive strategies to address fibroids within the Black community.

B

Understanding the Disparities Genetic Predisposition

Fibroids have a genetic component, and Black women often face a higher risk due to hereditary factors. Research indicates that if a woman’s mother or sister had fibroids, she is more likely to develop them as well. However, genetics alone cannot account for the stark racial disparities observed.

Environmental Factors

Lifestyle choices and environmental factors also play a role. Studies suggest that diet, specifically a high consumption of red meat and a low intake of fruits and vegetables, may contribute to fibroid development. Understanding and addressing these environmental factors are crucial for preventive strategies.

Impact on Physical and Mental Health Physical Manifestations

Fibroids can cause a range of physical symptoms, including heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and reproductive issues. The severity of symptoms varies, but the impact on daily life and overall well-being can be profound.

Psychological Toll

Managing the symptoms of fibroids, coupled with racial disparities in healthcare, can lead to increased stress and a diminished quality of life. Addressing the psychological toll is as crucial as treating the physical symptoms.

Comprehensive Approach to Fibroids Increased Awareness and Education

Raising awareness about fibroids, their symptoms, and available treatment options is essential. Educating both healthcare providers and the community at large can contribute to early detection and better management.

Culturally Competent Care

Healthcare providers must receive training to recognize and address the unique challenges faced by Black women. Culturally competent care ensures that individuals receive treatment that considers their specific needs and experiences. Community Engagement and Empowerment: Community engagement is pivotal in dismantling systemic barriers. Empowering Black women to advocate for their health, access resources, and engage in preventive measures can drive positive change.

Research Initiatives

Robust research initiatives focused on understanding the genetic and environmental factors contributing to fibroids in Black women are essential. This knowledge can inform targeted interventions and preventive strategies. Addressing fibroids in Black women’s health requires a comprehensive and collaborative effort. By acknowledging the genetic, environmental, and socio-economic factors contributing to fibroids, we can work towards a future where Black women receive equitable and effective care. Empowering individuals, engaging communities, and advancing research are integral components of a holistic approach to promoting the health and well-being of Black women in the face of fibroids.

In terms of taxes, many tax businesses operate offices in lower-income neighborhoods. What are your thoughts on this practice, particularly concerning your business in the city of Houston? The rationale behind this is that in affluent neighborhoods where residents earn substantial incomes, many individuals already have Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). On the other hand, in lower-income neighborhoods, there tend to be tax preparers who specialize in tax preparation without the need for a CPA. The choice often depends on the financial landscape of each area.

The challenge of operating in low-income communities isn’t exactly a downfall. It primarily involves managing individuals who are eager to receive their tax refunds. n the era of instant gratification, Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) apps have gained immense popularity, offering consumers the allure of acquiring desired products with the promise of delayed payments. While these apps may seem like a convenient solution for budget-conscious shoppers, the hidden pitfalls they present can lead to a perilous path of consumer debt. At first glance, BNPL apps appear to be a win-win for both consumers and merchants. Shoppers can take home their desired items without paying the full amount upfront, and merchants benefit from increased sales. However, the seemingly harmless convenience can quickly transform into a financial trap for unsuspecting users. One of the main issues with BNPL apps lies in

I

their enticing marketing tactics that downplay the financial commitment involved. The “buy now, pay later” mantra might sound appealing, but the delayed payment comes with added costs. Users may face high interest rates, late fees, and penalties for missed payments, turning what seemed like a budget-friendly option into a debt-inducing nightmare. Moreover, the ease of access to these apps can lead to impulsive spending habits. The convenience of a few clicks to complete a purchase can overshadow the financial responsibility that comes with it. Consumers may find themselves accumulating debt on multiple fronts, as the temptation to buy beyond their means becomes increasingly difficult to resist. Another concerning aspect of BNPL apps is the potential impact on credit scores. While some apps claim not to report missed payments to credit bureaus, others do, putting users at risk of damaging their credit history. For individuals aiming to build or maintain a good credit score, the consequences of a

late or missed payment can be severe and long-lasting. Furthermore, the allure of interest-free installment plans can mask the true cost of the purchased items. Consumers may overlook the cumulative impact of small installment payments, ultimately paying significantly more for the product than if they had made a one-time upfront payment. In conclusion, while Buy Now, Pay Later apps offer a convenient and seemingly affordable way to make purchases, consumers must approach them with caution. The hidden fees, high-interest rates, and potential impact on credit scores underscore the importance of understanding the true cost of deferred payments. As with any financial tool, responsible and informed use is crucial to avoid falling into the trap of accumulating debt and facing long-term financial consequences.

HOUSTON HOME SALES Increase After Nearly Two-Year Slump, Says Realtors’ Report By d-mars.com News Provider

ouston’s housing market experienced a notable upswing in November, marking the first year-over-year increase in home sales in almost two years. The Houston Association of Realtors reported a 4.9% rise in home sales compared to the same month the previous year, coupled with a substantial 11.9% increase in pending sales, indicating a positive trend. This surge in sales, if sustained, could signify that consumers are adapting to the impact of higher interest rates and increased property prices following the upheaval caused by COVID-19 on Houston’s real estate market. Cathy Treviño,

H

HAR chair with LPT Realty, expressed optimism, stating, “I couldn’t think of a better way to wrap up 2023 than to see positive sales trends after nearly two years of negative trending.” While home prices have risen since the pre-pandemic period, November’s average and median prices, approximately $404,597 and $326,000, respectively, remained relatively stable. Houston homebuyers also benefited from an expanded selection, with the inventory reaching around 3.5 months’ worth of supply. This figure, representing the time it would take to sell all available homes at the current pace, indicates a move toward a more balanced market, which is typically characterized by four to six months of supply. Although mortgage rates

remain notably higher than the 3.1% average rate in December 2021 during the pandemic real estate boom, they have slightly decreased in recent weeks. The average rate for a 30-year fixed loan dropped from 7.79% at the end of October to just above 7% by the end of last week, according to Freddie Mac. This decrease, the lowest since July, offers a glimmer of relief to prospective homebuyers. Despite the improvement,

experts do not anticipate a significant rise in mortgage rates in the coming months. Factors such as easing inflation and the Federal Reserve’s pause in rate hikes contribute to a stabilized borrowing cost for various loans, including mortgages. The Mortgage Bankers Association forecasts an average rate of around 7.1% for a 30-year fixed loan in the first quarter. As Treviño highlighted, “Home sales hinge heavily on interest rates, so hopefully

consumer confidence will be restored as we begin the new year, especially since inventory has steadily improved and prices have moderated, creating more favorable conditions for buyers.”
