COVER STORY

Study Highlights Black Women Still Facing Barriers in Predominantly White Workplaces

s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) programs face increasing dismantling across corporate America, the challenges Black women face in predominantly white workplaces are more critical than ever. Dr. Elizabeth Linos, Emma Bloomberg Associate Professor of Public Policy and Management at Harvard University, appeared on the Black Press’ Let It Be Known to discuss her groundbreaking study, “Intersectional Peer Effects at Work: The Effects of White Co-Workers on Black Women’s Careers.” The research explores how the racial composition of teams affects the career trajectories of Black women.

Dr. Linos’ findings are especially relevant, considering ongoing debates about the effectiveness and future of DE&I initiatives. Her study, which tracked 9,037 new hires in a professional services firm, revealed that Black women are disproportionately impacted by being placed on whiter teams. Black women were 51% more likely to leave the firm within two years and faced a significant decrease in their chances of promotion when working with predominantly white colleagues.

“One of the main metrics used to define employee success is billable hours, and so, regardless of your race and gender, employees who report lower billable hours are also likely to receive lower performance scores,” Dr. Linos told Let It Be Known News. She added, “The ‘penalty’—how much your performance evaluation drops based on a reduction in billables—is larger for Black women than other groups.”

The research emphasizes that Black women assigned to whiter teams often logged fewer billable and more training hours, which directly correlated with lower performance evaluations. This created a cycle of disadvantages that reduced their chances for promotion.

“Ultimately, I interpret these findings as confirmation that while, as a society, we may be making progress in diversifying workplaces on some dimensions, Black women may still face additional hurdles for promotion at work,” Linos stated.

Dr. Linos’ findings are alarming, mainly as DE&I initiatives—designed to counter such disparities—are increasingly under scrutiny and at risk of being rolled back. The study also uncovered that these challenges were not universal across all demographic groups. Hispanic, Asian, and Black men did not experience the same adverse effects from working with

Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages was the title sponsor of the gala, which was emceed by Keith Garvin of KPRC 2. Event chairs Morris Smith of Arca Continental Coca-Cola and Myrtle Jones of Halliburton guided the planning and execution of this remarkable event.

The gala concluded with performances by Grammy Award-winning artist Chrisette Michele and line dance king Cupid. President and CEO of the Houston Area Urban League, Judson W. Robinson III, reflected on the community’s support:

“The incredible generosity shown through this year’s gala demonstrates Houston’s commitment to creating opportunities for all.

white co-workers. In contrast, Black women were uniquely impacted by these team dynamics, highlighting the intersectional nature of the barriers they face.

Moreover, the study showed that when Black women worked alongside more Black co-workers, their turnover rates decreased, and their overall workplace experience improved.

“This is in line with a common finding in the literature that having more similar peers (in this case, Black co-workers) can have a positive effect on retention,” Dr. Linos and her colleagues wrote.

As discussions about equity in the workplace continue, the study offers a sobering reminder of how “neutral” workplace practices—such as team assignments and performance metrics—can disproportionately harm Black women.

“Seemingly neutral practices around staffing and promotion that rely on peers and networking can have a negative impact on equity at work,” Linos said.

“We need more research on how white employees can adjust their behavior to ensure they don’t contribute to existing racialized and gendered dynamics at work.”

The Transformative Power of a Pause

Contributing Writer

As the new year begins, many are drawn to the concept of Dry January—a break from alcohol that serves as more than just a reset for the body. It’s a chance to step back from habits that may have numbed emotions or clouded clarity. The turning of the calendar feels like an invitation, a gentle nudge to break free from patterns that have dulled our spirit. But real transformation doesn’t come from simply removing a substance; it begins with something far more profound: the courage to stop. To pause. To breathe.

In a world where hustle is glorified and productivity feels synonymous with worth, pausing—whether from alcohol, busyness, or digital noise—can seem almost defiant. Yet, it’s in this very act of stepping back where personal breakthroughs begin. To pause is not to quit. It’s an act of reclaiming control, refocusing energy, and redefining success on your own terms.

BREAKING THE CYCLE OF RELENTLESS MOTION

How often do you find yourself moving through life on autopilot? Checking boxes. Meeting expectations. Powering forward because slowing down feels like falling behind. But at what cost?

This constant motion can drain more than just your physical energy. It can strip away your clarity, purpose, and connection. Beneath the surface of busyness, stress simmers. Emotional voids deepen. You lose touch with yourself.

Over time, this unchecked cycle reveals itself in ways that cut deep:

Physical Exhaustion: Chronic fatigue, burnout, and a weakened immune system become your body’s plea for rest.

Emotional Numbness: Constant activity

leaves no space for emotional processing. Suppressed feelings often resurface such as anxiety, irritability, or a sense of disconnect.

Loss of Purpose: When was the last time you asked yourself why you’re pursuing your current path? Unquestioned momentum can drift you further from your core values.

Weakened Relationships: Genuine connection requires presence. When you’re too busy, moments with loved ones become rushed or missed altogether.

Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms: Whether it’s alcohol, endless scrolling, or overworking, numbing habits often mask deeper truths that need attention.

It might feel productive, but it’s often just the illusion of progress. Real growth—the kind that heals and transforms—requires space for reflection, for stillness, for being rather than just doing.

If you see yourself in these words, take heart. It’s never too late to rewrite the story.

THE COURAGE TO PAUSE

Pausing can feel uncomfortable, even scary. What might surface when the noise settles? What truths have you been avoiding? Yet, rather than fearing the quiet, imagine it as an act of self-liberation—a return to yourself.

Whether through Dry January or other forms of intentional breaks, here’s how you can begin:

1. Define Your Purpose for the Pause

Before you pause, ask yourself: Why am I doing this? What is calling you to slow down?

Is it clarity you crave?

A break from toxic patterns?

The desire to reconnect with your true values and dreams?

Write your why down. Let it be your anchor when the pause feels uncomfortable. Let it remind you that this stillness has a purpose.

2. Set Boundaries and Intentions

A meaningful pause isn’t about deprivation—it’s about mindful redirection. Clarify what you’re stepping away from and how you’ll use this space to nourish yourself.

Stepping back from alcohol for Dry January? Use the space to explore new healthy rituals like herbal teas, journaling, or outdoor walks.

Pausing from social media? Fill the space with nature walks or quiet moments of self-reflection.

Intentions transform pauses from empty voids into empowering rituals of growth.

3. Create a Support Network

You don’t have to do this alone. Share your decision with trusted friends, a mentor, or a supportive community who can encourage your journey.

Find an accountability partner who will remind you of your why when the pause feels tough.

Seek out spaces where others are embracing Dry January and personal growth.

There is strength in shared vulnerability. Together, you rise.

4. Lean Into your Discomfort

Stillness has a way of bringing long-buried emotions to the surface. Let them rise. Let yourself feel.

Reflect on the habits you’ve been avoiding.

Explore those feelings through journaling, meditation, or therapy.

The discomfort isn’t a sign of failure, it’s proof that you’re healing. Growth isn’t always comfortable, but it’s always worth it.

5. Celebrate the Small Shifts

Transformation rarely arrives in dramatic bursts. It reveals itself in quieter moments: a deeper breath, a clearer thought, a kinder word to yourself.

Every moment you honor your pause, you choose yourself. Celebrate that.

THE PROFOUND GIFT OF STILLNESS

Pausing—whether through Dry January or other intentional choices—is not a sign of weakness. It’s a profound act of self-love. It’s choosing to stop chasing and start listening—to yourself, to your needs, to the truths you’ve silenced.

Stillness offers you the space to:

Reconnect with Your Inner Wisdom: Strip away the noise and hear your own voice again.

Break Free from External Validation: Your worth is not measured by constant achievement.

Refocus Your Energy: Channel your time and effort into what truly matters.

Cultivate Meaningful Connections: Be fully present for the moments that shape your life.

And when you emerge from this pause—because you will—you’ll return stronger, clearer, and more deeply aligned with who you are meant to be.

THE POWER TO CHOOSE IS YOURS

You don’t need permission to pause. If you’ve felt overwhelmed, disconnected, or simply lost, consider this your invitation. You deserve a life that feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside.

Be a rebel. Be defiant. Step back. Pause. Breathe. And when you rise—because you will—you’ll be transformed and unstoppable. Frenetta Tate is the CEO of Frenetta Tate Global LLC, a women’s empowerment coaching company. She can be reached on social media @frenettatate.

What Do Standardized Tests Say About College Achievement?

very year, millions of high schoolers prepare for the arduous process of college admissions. Most will take either the SAT or the ACT, multi-hour examinations that can feel like the climax of an epic battle students have been waging ever since they entered the halls of formal education.

But is it a battle worth fighting in the first place?

The SAT is one of the longest-standing standardized college admissions in the United States. Along with its counterpart, the ACT, these tests have been at the center of heated debates. Some say these tests only serve to reinforce racial inequities in education. Supporters of SAT and ACT scores say that they help universities understand how likely students will be to succeed in college by predicting grades, chances of graduation, and success after college.

Numerade analyzed academic research to see what standardized test scores say about academic success.

The SAT contains two sections: math and evidence-based reading and writing. Most answers are multiple-choice, but some math questions require entering an answer instead of selecting one. An optional SAT essay was discontinued in

2021; however, a small number of schools still choose to offer it.

The ACT is a little different in that it contains four sections: English, math, reading, and science. All of its questions are multiple-choice, and it has an optional writing section that may be required by some universities.

Standardized testing may be better predictors than generally supposed

In a study published in January 2024, Harvard-based research initiative Opportunity Insights, along with researchers from Brown University, Dartmouth College, and the National Bureau of Economic Research, investigated the value of standardized test scores in the college admission process. They found that SAT and ACT scores—but, surprisingly, not high school GPA scores—can better predict academic success in college. “Test scores have vastly more predictive power than is commonly understood in the popular debate,” John Friedman, the lead author of the study, told The New York Times.

The study looked at students who were admitted to all eight Ivy League colleges plus Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Duke, and the University of Chicago between 2017 and 2022. It found that students with perfect scores on the SAT or ACT, 1600 or 36 respectively, achieved a 0.43 point-higher first-year college GPA than students who

earned SAT and ACT scores of 1200 and 25. However, students with a perfect (scaled) GPA of 4.0 in high school achieve less than a 0.1-point higher GPA in their first year of college than students with a high school GPA of 3.2.

Some have raised concerns that these standardized test scores may not show the full picture. They worry these tests could be biased against students who aren’t able to afford the additional cost of tutors or other resources that can help them prepare for college, a question the Opportunity Insights paper also answered. Controlling for family income, race, gender, and legacy status, the study found that there was no evidence that students from higher-resource backgrounds performed better than peers from lower-resource backgrounds. In fact, their college GPAs were practically identical.

All together, the researchers concluded that standardized test scores may help highly selective colleges provide upward mobility and accept students from a wide range of backgrounds.

HERE ARE SEVERAL TIPS THAT CAN HELP:

Understanding your loan terms

t's never too early to start working with a financial advisor. There are many stages in your life when you could benefit from the advice of a financial professional, including when you are young and taking out student loans, or in the process of paying them off.

With a record $1.7 trillion in outstanding student loan debt among U.S. students, it’s likely that your own debt is burdensome on your wallet.

Before you take out a loan, make sure you understand its terms -- including whether it’s a fixed rate or variable rate loan and what its repayment terms are -- and that can help you make a selection that works best for your budget and anticipated future salary. Strategize so that you borrow only what you need.

Paying your loan back

It can be tricky to determine a loan repayment strategy that will reduce the overall cost of your loan while allowing you to bud-

get for and manage other expenses. Lean on the wisdom of a finance professional. They can help you weigh the pros and cons of consolidating your student loan debt with other consumer debt and may suggest other options based on your unique circumstances, such as refinancing your loan.

Improving your credit

As many young people soon discover, the way you manage your student loans can have a large impact on your credit history, particularly if you default on payments. If done right, you can maintain a healthy credit score during the repayment process and beyond so that you don’t adversely impact your future ability to finance big-ticket items, like cars or homes.

Preparing for the future

It’s never too early to create a holistic financial plan that accounts for your retirement and other future financial goals. In fact, small contributions now have the power to grow exponentially in the years ahead and can help you avoid playing catch-up when you’re in your 30s, 40s and 50s. Draft an overall budget that balances paying down your student debt, meeting today’s day-today expenses and preparing for your golden years with tax-advantaged savings strategies. With a thoughtful borrowing strategy informed by the expertise of a financial advisor, you can earn the college degree you need for the career you want while maintaining healthy finances.

fresh wave of innovation and optimism is reshaping the American economy, as revealed by a new survey commissioned by Herbalife and conducted by Talker Research. The 2024 Entrepreneurial Index reveals that one-third of Americans view themselves as entrepreneurs. The survey shows that 36% of Gen Z and 39% of millennials identify as entrepreneurs, compared to 29% of Gen X respondents and just 25% of baby boomers.

The study surveyed 10,000 people across 12 countries, including 2,000 in the United States.

Defining entrepreneurship

What exactly is an entrepreneur? Survey respondents had a variety of definitions: Someone who has the drive and determination to put their business ideas into action. Someone willing to lay it all on the line for their dream. But mostly, it's someone who owns a business, has a side hustle or wants those things in the future.

Cautious optimism prevails

The survey also examined global attitudes toward entrepreneurship, revealing some surprising results.

Younger generations are more positive: 69% of Gen Z and 63% of millennials surveyed were optimistic about entrepreneurial endeavors, whether for themselves or in general.

That's compared to 50% of Gen X respondents and only 35% of baby boomers who reported being confident.

But this optimism doesn't mean people aren't worried about the current state of the economy. In fact, 59% of respondents are currently worried, and that was consistent across generations. And for those not interested in starting a small business or side hustle this year, concerns about the state of the economy were cited as the top reason why.

Side hustles and small businesses are common

That said, despite these worries, younger generations are still working toward their goals. Not only were younger respondents more positive about entrepreneurial pursuits, but they were also more likely to have

a small business or an active side hustle. Four in 10 Gen Z and 41% of millennials have one or the other, compared to 31% of Gen X and 19% of baby boomers surveyed.

The impact of the Great Resignation So, where are all these young entrepreneurs coming from? The Great Resignation, which saw 80 million Americans leave their jobs between 2020 and 2023, provides some insight. According to the World Economic Forum, these individuals weren't quitting to relax on a beach or read a good book; they were seeking greater control over their lives amid widespread uncertainty. Many turned to starting their own businesses or launching side hustles, with a record 5.5 million new ventures emerging in 2022 alone.

All of it points to a sense of cautious optimism among the current and budding entrepreneurs out there. Continuing to make money, no matter what the economy does, is the name of the game.

If you're considering becoming an entrepreneur or looking to boost your side hustle, this is your sign to do so. Best of luck!

12 IDEAS for Home Improvement Projects TO Do Now

Now is the perfect time to breathe new life into your living space, whether you're looking to revamp your kitchen, upgrade your landscaping or tackle that long-overdue bathroom renovation.

TO GET YOU STARTED, HERE ARE SOME IDEAS:

1. Invest in sustainable features.

Updating your bathroom? Investing in eco-friendly upgrades like a tankless water heater or water-conserving toilet is good for the environment. It can lead to a higher return on investment when you decide it's time to move.

2. Install ceiling fans.

Ceiling fans get the air moving in your home and are a decorative addition to any room. Look for styles that complement your decor, and even add a dramatic flair.

3. Declutter.

Take a look around your bedroom, living room or family room. Too much clutter? Decluttering your home can seem like a daunting task, but it boils down to this: take note of what the room is supposed to be used for and remove anything that doesn't pertain to that use. A pro tip to make it

even easier: designate bins for items to keep, donate, sell or discard. Just toss the items in the appropriate bin and you'll be halfway there.

4. Inspect your dryer for allergens

When you hear the word "allergies," it's easy to think of the more common allergens like pollen and dust, but there are several hidden allergens in homes that can cause a host of health issues. Inspect your dryer vents for mold, lint or animal droppings, and remove dangerous foreign objects. And while you're at it, organize your laundry room with new shelving or a hanging rod.

5. Switch to an HVAC zoning system

This allows you to regulate the temperature levels throughout different areas of your home to help keep every nook and cranny comfortable.

6. Install kitchen ventilation

Properly ventilating your cooktop can help improve the overall air quality in your home and add a decorative, even dramatic, touch to the space.

7. Install crown molding

The best way to elevate your living space and make your ceiling appear higher is by installing crown molding. Not only is crown molding classic and timeless, but it also draws the eye upward. This will make the rooms in your home seem bigger than they are.

8. Replace your garage door

A new garage door can significantly increase your home's value and curb appeal. Choosing an experienced, highly-rated company can save money in the long term and give you peace of mind that your garage door is functioning optimally.

9. Landscape with retaining walls

Retaining walls help manage a sloping landscape and add character and beauty to your property. Transform your yard and property by using retaining walls to add terraces filled with flowers, herbs, vegetable gardens, or even small fruit trees.

10. Keep pests at bay

Invest in an outdoor mosquito control service if you're looking for a powerful solution to handle a mosquito problem for outdoor areas.

11. Paint your front door

This is one of the easiest, least expensive ways to give your home a dramatic pop in curb appeal.

12. Install new windows

Windows can set the tone for your home's aesthetic and enhance your living space's comfort. Choosing the right window for your home comes down to thinking about where you live, where the window would go, and your goals.

AHome ownership Boom Widens the Wealth Gap, Leaving Renters in Financial In$tability

earnings, researchers said.

profile on the Wealth and Financial Well-Being of Renter Households highlights that renters today have a median net worth of just $10,400—a mere fraction of homeowners’ nearly $400,000 median net worth. According to the Aspen Institute Financial Security Program’s report, “From Rent to Riches,” the disparity is not solely due to home equity. While home equity makes up $200,000 of homeowners’ median net worth, the remainder comes from other assets that renters typically do not own, such as stocks, bonds, retirement accounts, and business equity. The report notes that 78% of homeowners own a potentially appreciating asset beyond their primary residence, compared to only 48% of renters.

Just 39% of renter households have income exceeding their monthly expenses, compared to 54% of homeowners. The limited cash flow makes it difficult for renters to save, pay off debt, and invest in assets that can build wealth.

Renters saw a 43% increase in net worth between 2019 and 2022, outpacing the 34% increase for homeowners. Pandemic-era support measures helped to spur the growth, allowing many renters to reduce debt and invest some of their

However, the end of support programs and rising housing costs reversed those gains.

Rent prices surged by 27% from early 2020 to August 2022, exacerbating financial strain. Half of all renter households now spend a reported more than 30% of their pre-tax income on rent, while 27% spend more than half of their income on housing. Experts said these rent burdens leave little room for saving or investing, perpetuating the cycle of financial instability.

The report identifies several systemic obstacles preventing renters from building wealth. Renters are more likely than homeowners to be burdened by student loan debt and late payments. Even though renters’ median debt decreased slightly in recent years, 18% still struggle with overdue payments, double the rate for homeowners. The median savings for renters is just $3,000, compared to $20,000 for the average household. Only 31% of renters have enough emergency savings to cover six weeks of expenses. Renters are also more likely to have subprime credit scores, limiting their ability to secure favorable loans for homes or businesses. Half of renters reported being denied credit or receiving less credit than requested, compared to 28% of homeowners.

The report unveiled several strategies to help renters achieve

financial stability and build wealth, including increasing wages, expanding rental assistance programs, and boosting the supply of affordable housing. Policies like the Housing Choice Voucher program and Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) can help ease the rent burden. Another pathway to building wealth is encouraging renters to save through retirement accounts and innovative asset classes like shared real estate ownership. Programs like HUD’s Family Self-Sufficiency program have shown success, with participating families saving an average of $9,500.

The report authors noted that down payment assistance, improving credit scoring models, and increasing the supply of starter homes could assist in renters' transition to homeownership.

The report’s authors also called on policymakers, financial institutions, and community leaders to prioritize renter-focused wealth-building strategies.

“We cannot achieve a more equitable economy without addressing the financial instability of renters,” the report concludes. “All households, regardless of homeownership status, deserve the tools and resources to achieve financial security and resilience.”

It's likely that you want to keep control of how your belongings are packed and moved by taking charge of the move yourself. In fact, many people share this same sentiment - Penske Truck Rental's Settling In: Consumer Moving Trends Survey found that 57% of people planning a move prefer to rent their own moving truck.

If that sounds like you, here are tips to help you successfully execute your move.

Plan ahead

The more you prep, the better. Create a checklist and calendar to stay on track.

For moving day, create a bag for essentials like toiletries and phone chargers, then pack a toolkit with things you'll need for setting up your new home, like power strips, towels and trash bags.

Pro tip: Label boxes on tops and sides so they're easy to see. Don't miss the details

Moving requires bureaucratic details, including:

Change of address with the post office, your bank, credit cards, driver's license, etc.

Utilities need to be turned off or transferred. Moving to a new

Loading and driving your moving truck

Familiarize yourself with your moving truck, including knowing what fuel it needs. Learn the height and width (clearance) dimensions to avoid mishaps entering narrow drive-thru lanes or driving under low bridges. Consider an extra padlock for lengthy/overnight stops.

Organize the heaviest items in an "I" formation, balancing weight evenly, and use tie-downs to prevent sliding. Smaller items and boxes can fit in gaps around heavy items to fill the truck. Keep anything valuable or that you'll need to access easily in the cab.

A larger vehicle can take time to get used to. Watch your speed and proximity to other vehicles to avoid sudden braking.

Moving Soon?

Assess what you're bringing to your new home and start planning for a moving date. Once identified, you'll need to find a truck that's best suited for your move. After you identify the perfect size truck, you're all set to book your truck rental. Many rental companies offer quick and easy bookings, and additional services that will make your move a breeze. You can grab packing supplies, furniture pads, tow dollies and more right from the pick-up location.

These Tips Can Make It Easier

town? Research whether current providers can service your new area or if you'll need to switch.

Pro tip: Many tasks can be performed online. Check provider websites for information.

Pro tip: Save time on moving day by renting your truck the day before the move.

Maximize decluttering

You've probably always wanted to declutter, but moving provides the incentive to get it done. Start with areas you use least, like guest rooms. Label boxes "donate," "trash" and "recycle," then ask yourself: "Do I want this item enough to pack and move it?" If not, into one of those boxes it goes. Create a room-by-room schedule on your calendar to spread sorting over several days or weeks.

Pack carefully

Pack valuable breakables in bubble wrap or other quality materials. You can recycle cardboard or use coffee filters between everyday dishes and bowls to prevent chips and scratches. Secure dresser drawers and appliance doors with rope and tape.

Pro tip: Take pictures of the back of your TV before disconnecting so you'll know how to re-wire, and tape remotes to the back.

Pro tip: Check the weather forecast to know what to expect and leave extra time if needed. Avoid busy urban areas around holidays.

Enjoy the move

Enlist help from friends and family, take breaks and enjoy the experience! Moving to a new place can lead to fun and exciting discoveries, and the chance to make new friends.

Explore your new area

Moving to a new place can be both exciting and challenging. Finding ways to connect with your new community can make the transition smoother. The survey found that certain activities helped movers acclimate to their new neighborhood and build a sense of community. Top activities included: exploring new restaurants and shops, meeting neighbors, discovering new parks and outdoor spaces, plus participating in local events. The majority of people moving to a new neighborhood (72%) found that establishing a consistent routine helped them get used to their new area.

Moving can be a wonderful experience, full of new adventures.

How to Help Prevent the Spread of Germs this Cold and Flu Season

Chilly temperatures and winter weather aren't the only burdens that come with this time of year - it's also the peak of cold and flu season. Cold and flu germs can lurk on hundreds of common surfaces we encounter daily, and according to the CDC, the flu virus can live and potentially infect a person for up to 48 hours after being deposited on a surface.

A holistic germ prevention strategy is one of the most effective ways to help stop the spread of illness-causing germs.

Establish a "Drop Zone"

Along with high-touch surfaces, germs can be brought home from work and school on items like lunchboxes, reusable water bottles and work bags traveling back and forth. To help mitigate bringing germs home, establish a "drop zone" or a designated place to leave shoes, backpacks and other outside items so that germs don't get tracked through the house.

Practice

Good Hand Hygiene

Reset After Someone in your Household is Sick

If you or someone in your household is sick, stay home from work or school to help reduce the chance of others getting sick and prioritize rest and fluids to recuperate. If you are a parent with a sick kid, try your best to get a good night's sleep as much as you're able, wash your hands after providing care and disinfect communal surfaces that can harbor germs.

HERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE STEPS:

Disinfect High-Touch and High-Traffic

Surfaces

You likely come into contact with certain high-touch and high-traffic areas in your home multiple times daily that can harbor germs. Think of countertops, doorknobs, light switches and toilet handles, for example. Disinfect these areas regularly with a disinfectant to kill bacteria and viruses when used as directed on hard, non-porous surfaces. With any disinfecting product, make sure you follow the product label instructions to ensure you're using it correctly and effectively.

Washing your hands is a simple and effective way to help stay healthy. Make sure to wash your hands often, especially when you are likely to get and spread germs after being in a public place, before or after preparing or eating food, going to the bathroom or coughing and sneezing into your hands. To make sure you're washing your hands thoroughly, lather your hands including your fingers and under your nails with soap and scrub with warm water for at least 20 seconds - or the amount of time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice.

Take

Care of your Holistic Health

Maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated and exercising regularly all contribute to your overall immune system. Prioritizing sleep is also an important part of maintaining your immune system, especially when you feel under the weather, because it helps the immune system to repair and rest.

How to Recognize and Treat Sleep Apnea

Once your household has recovered, reset your home. Disinfect hot spots in shared spaces and in the infected individual's room such as doorknobs, light switches and faucet handles. Wash dirty clothing and linens, and to sanitize - or reduce bacteria in laundry - you can add bleach to your wash load of bleach-safe clothing, towels and linens. You can also sanitize dishes after washing them with a bleach and water solution.

Follow CDC Guidance

Lastly, the CDC provides up-to-date guidance on vaccines like the flu shot, prevention tactics and different virus trends in your area. Check the CDC's website to stay up to date on the latest information and guidance.

Maintaining a holistic strategy can help you and your household navigate cold and flu season with ease.

o you snore? You may be tempted to dismiss it as an annoying but nonserious condition. You may even have a family history of snoring or think of it as an unavoidable side effect of aging. However, snoring is often the first sign of sleep apnea.

WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that causes a person to repeatedly stop and start breathing. If you snore or feel tired even after adequate sleep, you may have sleep apnea. If left untreated, the condition can have a major impact on your health and quality of life.

How sleep apnea affects you

Sleep apnea can affect your life on a daily basis. For example, because of the lack of quality sleep, you can experience daytime drowsiness, which can increase your risk of a car or workplace accident. You may also feel

irritable and have difficulty concentrating.

Also, sleep apnea can increase your risk of other health conditions. According to the National Council on Aging, these conditions include:

• Type 2 diabetes

• High blood pressure

• Heart problems

• Kidney disease

• Stroke

• Liver problems

• Sexual dysfunction

How can you treat sleep apnea?

There are several sleep apnea treatments. A safe, effective and simple treatment option to consider is a custom oral appliance therapy (OAT) device. OATs are comfortable, easy to use and work well to treat sleep apnea in a nonintrusive manner. When the mouthpiece is inserted, it holds your jaw or tongue in a stable position, opening your airway to help you breathe during sleep.

Another sleep apnea treatment you may be familiar with is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. A CPAP opens your airway and provides constant, steady air pressure through a mask to help you breathe while you sleep.

Depending on the severity of the condition, a doctor may recommend hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS). This treatment requires surgery to implant a device that stimulates a nerve under the tongue to keep the airway open.

CPAP and HNS can be effective sleep apnea treatments. That said, they are invasive and are associated with some health risks. Recently, certain CPAP machines have been recalled because of reports of serious injuries. An HNS implant was also recently recalled because of electrical malfunctions that rendered the device ineffective and dangerous to users.

Why you should choose Oral Appliance Therapy

Before you try CPAP or HNS, consider ask-

ing your doctor to prescribe you a custom OAT. A custom OAT is fitted to your mouth and engineered to precisely track your treatment plan and unique anatomy. With the help of a sleep physician and a qualified sleep dentist, you can get fitted for a custom device to address your sleep apnea symptoms.

There are over-the-counter OATs that you can purchase online or at your local pharmacy. However, these devices are not as effective at managing sleep apnea as custom devices. When prescribing an OAT, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends using a custom product over a non-custom appliance. The academy's research suggests that custom OATs increase oxygen saturation to a greater extent than non-custom OAs. Furthermore, treatment with custom oral devices is a covered benefit for most medical insurance plans and Medicare. The over-the-counter OATs are not covered.

It's time to take control of your sleep!

Looking to Up Your Fitness in the New Year? Experts Say Tech Can Help

From wearables to apps, New Year's fitness resolutions are getting a tech boost that's catching on.

At the beginning of every year, many make a familiar pledge: to get fit.

For nearly half of all U.S. adults who make fitness-related resolutions, experts say technology such as wearable devices and apps can be key to keeping this pledge.

Technology has really been adapted and modified to be appealing to a wide genre of those who love to exercise.

Your Goals, Your Way

There's no one-size-fits-all for fitness technology. Experts say you should start with an assessment of what you value and what your fitness goals are. Whether you're planning to run an ultramarathon or signing up for your first gym membership, there's something for everyone to keep their resolutions.

There are several wearable devices that can track things like heart rate, calories, steps, and more, There are also mobile

apps and services to track daily physical activity behaviors.

Beginners can start with mobile apps that come with quick and simple workouts - and if they value aesthetics, they can invest in wearables that also serve as fashion pieces.

Physical activity tracking devices have historically been geared to sport-specific athletes, particularly in running and cycling. However, they have now expanded to outdoor sports like hiking, climbing and swimming, and we're even starting to see tech for things like flexibility and mobility training.

The expansion of these technologies is leading to a shift back to basic fitness practices with a focus on everyday activities and movements, such as time spent standing, daily steps, breathing and meditation, rather than specific, structured exercise routines.

The fitness technology market has grown as more people turn to apps to support their goals.

Experts expect the mobile apps and wearable device markets to continue to grow in 2025. The next frontier is integrating these technologies into

health care in the future, allowing for more holistic treatment plans and monitoring capabilities.

Make It Personal

Choosing new fitness technology is a personal decision based on individual values and priorities. Now, artificial intelligence is taking personalization even further by creating workout plans tailored to an individual's unique data.

AI is generating these customizable workouts for your home gym, for on-the-go, your travel, and for those that are short on time.

Wearable tech, mobile apps and AI can be even more supercharged with human input, experts say. Consult with an exercise professional or a medical provider before embarking on a new fitness regimen or making significant changes based on their wearable technology data.

Social support is the key factor in helping people change their behavior, so supplement the benefits from wearable devices and mobile apps by seeking out peers and professionals. Don’t rely on technology so much that it creates a barrier to reaching your goals, like skipping a workout because your smartwatch ran out of battery.

With all the innovations that promise to up performance and get people moving, there's never been a better time to conquer your fitness goals. So, as you transition into 2025, remember: Fitness technology can give you a push, but the most important piece of equipment is your willpower, and all it takes is the first step. You've got this!

Ways to Prioritize Mental Wellness this Year

The new year means resolutions, reflection and recharging. It's a fresh start, a time when new, healthier habits seem possible. This year, along with eating healthier and exercising more, prioritize your mental wellness. Hit reset and take steps to clear your mind to feel focused, energized and ready to tackle the new year ahead.

Here are top tips for achieving mental clarity and starting the year off with your best foot forward.

Declutter your space

You'd be surprised by how much an organized home and workspace matter to your psyche. As you clear that clutter, you're clearing your mind, too. A neat and tidy home can reduce your stress.

Start small by tackling one drawer or surface at a time and consider donating or recycling items you no longer need to create a sense of accomplishment while helping others. A decluttered space also allows for easier cleaning and creates a more welcoming environment for yourself and others.

Unplug

Make a resolution to take a break from technology every now and then. Constant screen time, with the overwhelming amount of information coming at us every day, can lead to stress and anxiety. Breaks from technology give your mind time to recharge.

Begin by setting boundaries, such as designated "no-phone" zones like the dining table or bedroom, and experiment with "digital detox" days where you disconnect completely. Replace screen time with activities that nurture your well-being, like journaling, reading a book, or spending

time with loved ones in person.

Connect with nature

While you're unplugged, find some time to get outside, whether it's a quiet moment in a park, walking the dog through your neighborhood or simply enjoying fresh air. Numerous studies show that people who spend even a small amount of time in green spaces have reduced anxiety, stress and depression.

Prioritize sleep

Unplugging and getting outside will help with your sleep, too. Establish a consistent bedtime routine that includes calming activities like reading or listening to soft music.

In order to get the best night's sleep possible, avoid caffeine or heavy meals a few hours before bed to give your body the best chance at relaxation, create a sleep-friendly environment by keeping your bedroom

cool, dark, and quiet and limit screen time at least an hour before bed.

Eat more foods that contain nutrients that will support brain function

Incorporating foods like eggs, fatty fish and whole grains that contain nutrients to support brain function and mood can also regulate your mental well-being. Vitamin B5 helps maintain a healthy digestive system and assists the body in using other vitamins, especially Vitamin B2, which helps manage stress.

Create a consistent morning routine

To make the most of your mornings in the new year, start with setting intentional habits, like light stretching, journaling or enjoying a nutritious breakfast.

The University

of Houston

continues to grow not just in student population but also in the construction of new buildings such as the John M. O’ Quinn Law Building and Tilman J Fertitta Family College of Medicine.

UH’s facilities growth includes the continuous need to procure a variety of non-construction goods and services, all of which undergirds UH’s recognition as an institutional “Powerhouse.”

January marks the beginning of a fresh chapter, and with it comes Mental Wellness Month—a perfect reminder to focus on your mental health. Mental Wellness Month is a meaningful opportunity to recognize the vital connection between emotional and physical health. It’s a time to shine a light on the current state of mental health in the U.S., break down stigmas, and share valuable resources for those who need support.

Life can surprise us with challenges when we least expect them. You might face tough situations that keep you on edge. Finding joy and happiness can feel hard, especially when dealing with financial problems, work stress, relationship issues, or other struggles. These difficul ties can feel overwhelming.

Even positive changes can sometimes feel overwhelming. A job promotion with a bigger office and higher salary sounds great, but it also brings more responsibilities that may be stressful. Similarly, becoming a new parent is a wonderful gift, but the sleepless nights, constant feedings, and shift to parenting can feel heavy. Whether changes are exciting or challenging, they often come with mixed emotions, highlighting the need to take care of your mental and emotional well-being.

Mental health challenges affect millions worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that roughly one in four people globally would experience a mental health condition in 2024. In the U.S. alone, approximately 46.6 million adults face mental illness in any given year. Additionally, one in six youths (ages 6–17) experience a mental health disorder each year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone. I’ve been there—juggling so much that it sometimes felt like I was about to boil over. When things get hectic, I’ve learned a few strategies to help me manage those challenging days. Prioritization is key, especially on days when everyone seems to need something simultaneously. I love being an entrepreneur, but with more success comes more

demands, tighter deadlines, and occasional sleepless nights.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

I used to say “yes” to everything—more projects meant more income and staying competitive—but working nonstop drained me. Lack of sleep and constant stress meant I couldn’t put my best foot forward. Over time, I learned it’s okay to say “no” and not feel bad about it. Setting realistic deadlines, being clear about expectations, and avoiding overcommitting have become my go-to practices. Listening to my body is also crucial. When I need a break, I take one—whether it’s a walk around the neighborhood or a quick shopping trip to snag a bargain (yes, Ross is one of my happy places).

Surrounding myself with positive people and maintaining healthy boundaries has made a world of difference. I’ve realized I don’t need to answer every email or text the moment it comes through. Protecting my peace is worth it. Also, I’ve learned to focus on projects that align with my values and bring purpose to my work—no more saying yes just for the money.

And most importantly, I rely on my faith to keep me grounded. If you need some verses to reflect on during those overwhelming times, read Psalm 61:2 and Philippians 4:6 for encouragement and Jesus’ strength.

I’ve shared a bit about what works for me, but when it comes to your mental well-being, it’s all about finding what feels right for you. Self-care is personal—what works for one person might not work for another. Take the time to explore, experiment, and discover the practices that truly make you feel your best. It’s okay if it takes some trial and error to figure out what truly brings you joy and balance.

HERE ARE A FEW SELF-CARE TIPS FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF MENTAL HEALTH (NIMH):

+ Exercise regularly

A short daily walk can improve your mood and health. Even small amounts of activity help.

+ Eat and hydrate well

Have balanced meals and drink plenty of water. Limit caffeine and alcohol if they negatively affect you.

+ Prioritize sleep

Follow a sleep routine, and limit screen time before bed to improve rest.

+ Relax

Try activities like meditation, breathing exercises, or anything that calms you.

+ Set goals

Focus on what’s important, don’t overcommit, and celebrate small wins.

+ Practice gratitude

Daily, note or think about things you’re thankful for.

+ Stay positive

Challenge negative thoughts for a better outlook.

+ Connect with others

Lean on friends and family for emotional and practical support.

Self-care is about doing things that improve your physical and mental well-being. It helps reduce stress, boost energy, and lower the risk of illness. Even small daily habits can make a big difference.

WHEN

SHOULD YOU CONSIDER SEEKING PROFESSIONAL HELP?

According to NIMH, it’s important to reach out if you’re experiencing significant symptoms that persist for two weeks or more. These may include difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite or unexplained weight fluctuations, trouble getting out of bed due to your mood, problems with concentration, loss of interest in activities you typically enjoy, struggles to complete routine tasks, or feelings of irritability, frustration, or restlessness. To get started, speak with your primary care provider. They can connect you with a qualified mental health professional who can guide you on the next steps toward improving your well-being.

Once again, I’d like to ask—how are you?

Your mental health and well-being are important and deserve your attention. Remember, prioritizing self-care is an act of strength, not selfishness. Happy 2025! Much love! Stay blessed!

.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has issued an advisory linking alcohol consumption to an increased risk of cancer, calling for updated warning labels on alcoholic beverages to inform consumers better. Alcohol is listed as one of the leading preventable causes of cancer in the United States, contributing to 100,000 cases and 20,000 deaths each year.

UCurrent warning labels on alcoholic beverages focus on general health risks, impaired driving, and pregnancy-related concerns but omit the established connection to cancer. Dr. Murthy urged Congress to mandate updated labels that

address the cancer risks associated with alcohol consumption—a move like requirements for cigarette packaging.

Research Confirms Alcohol-Cancer Connection

Decades of research confirm that alcohol is causally linked to at least seven types of cancer, including breast, liver, colorectal, and throat cancers. For example, studies show that consuming even one drink daily raises the risk of breast cancer by 10% compared to non-drinkers, while the risk of mouth cancer increases by 40% for the same level of consumption.

The advisory explains that the lifetime risk of breast cancer for women rises from 11.3% for those drinking less than one drink per week to 13.1% for those consuming one daily and 15.3% for two daily beverages. Among men, the risk of developing alcohol-related cancers increases from 10% with less than one drink per week to 11.4% for one drink daily

Former Vice President Kamala Harris Announces Final Rule to Remove Medical Debt from Credit Reports

Fand 13% for two daily beverages.

The Surgeon General noted that cancer risk increases with higher alcohol consumption but added that even low levels of drinking are not without risk. Health officials have noted that there is no safe limit for alcohol consumption, which aligns with the World Health Organization’s findings.

Mechanisms Behind Alcohol-Related Cancers

The surgeon general’s advisory notes several ways in which alcohol contributes to cancer development. Dr. Murthy noted that alcohol breaks down in the body into acetaldehyde, a toxic compound that damages DNA and interferes with cellular repair processes. He said it generates reactive oxygen species, leading to inflammation and further DNA damage. Additionally, alcohol alters hormone levels, including estrogen, which plays a role in breast cancer development.

Alcohol’s interaction with tobacco also increases the absorption of carcinogens, compounding the risk for cancers of the mouth and throat. These biological pathways are consistent across different types of alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, and spirits.

Global Perspective and Recommendations

Globally, alcohol was linked to over 740,000 cancer cases in 2020. While countries such as South Korea and Ireland have begun implementing cancer-specific warnings on alcohol labels, the United States lags. Ireland, for instance, reportedly plans to introduce labels by 2026 stating a direct connection between alcohol and fatal cancers.

Dr. Murthy recommended strengthening public education campaigns to increase awareness of the risks associated with alcohol. He also encouraged healthcare providers to inform patients about these risks and incorporate alcohol screening into routine care.

“Many people assume that drinking within current guidelines of one drink daily for women and two for men is safe, but the evidence does not support that assumption,” Dr. Murthy said. “Less is better when it comes to reducing cancer risk.”

forts are part of a broader push to reduce the financial strain caused by medical emergencies, with jurisdictions projected to eliminate roughly $15 billion in medical debt for up to six million individuals.

ormer Vice President Kamala Harris announced a new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) rule to eliminate medical debt from consumer credit reports. The White House explained in a release that the action would remove $49 billion in unpaid medical bills, benefiting 15 million Americans by raising credit scores and improving access to home loans, cars, and small businesses.

Administration officials further noted that states and localities have already leveraged funds from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) to eliminate over $1 billion in medical debt for more than 700,000 Americans. These ef-

“No one should be denied economic opportunity because they got sick or experienced a medical emergency. That is why we have worked to cancel more than $1 billion in medical debt with support from the American Rescue Plan,” Harris remarked during the announcement. “This final rule ensures that medical debt will no longer be included in credit scores, transforming the financial futures of millions.”

Medical debt remains the largest source of debt in collections, surpassing credit card, utility, and auto loan debt combined. The CFPB has reported that medical bills are often riddled with errors and inflated charges, making them a poor indicator of an individual’s creditworthiness. Officials added that the rule would remove medical debt from credit reports, building on earlier changes by major credit agencies that excluded specific categories of medical debt.

According to administration data, jurisdictions including Cook County, Illinois; Cleveland, Ohio; and New Jersey have relieved hundreds of millions in medical debt for residents. For example, Cook County eliminated $382 million in debt for over 210,000 individuals. North Carolina recently launched an initiative to forgive up to $4

billion in medical debt for nearly two million residents, ensuring hospitals adopt policies that reduce the risk of future debt while improving financial assistance systems.

The Biden-Harris Administration also implemented broader reforms to address the root causes of medical debt, including enforcing requirements for tax-exempt hospitals to provide financial assistance, simplifying debt forgiveness processes for veterans, and protecting consumers from surprise medical bills.

“This unprecedented rule reflects our commitment to lowering costs and creating pathways to financial stability for families across the nation,” Harris stated.

ANESTHESIOLOGISTS LEAD THE WAY IN THE PREVENTION OF POSTOPERATIVE DELIRIUM

As the physician leaders in your care before, during and after surgery, anesthesiologists play a crucial role in preventing postoperative delirium. Launched by ASA in 2015, the Perioperative Brain Health Initiative focuses on improving care for older adults with memory or thinking problems by supporting better brain recovery after surgery. It offers best practices, guidelines, a frailty toolkit for care teams, and patient education on postoperative delirium, including suggestions for talking to your anesthesiologist and advice for preparing for surgery.

Additionally, ASA's journal, Anesthesiology, recently published new evidence-based recommendations for strategies that healthcare professionals may consider, including:

Expanding preoperative evaluation

Older adults scheduled for inpatient surgery may benefit from preoperative evaluation to assess for frailty or cognitive impairment. At-risk patients can receive care in advance of the surgery from a multidisciplinary care team, visits from a geriatric doctor or nurse and education on postoperative delirium.

Choosing the type of anesthesia

Anesthesiologists and patients should work together to determine the most appropriate type of anesthesia for that patient, based on the surgery they're having.

Prescribing medication to reduce risk

Anesthesiologists may consider prescribing the sedative dexmedetomidine to older patients having inpatient procedures because it's less likely to cause postoperative delirium than other commonly used sedatives.

Minimizing the use of other medications

Anesthesiologists should evaluate the risks and benefits of medications for anxiety, mental health issues and pain that may cause central nervous system effects in older adults, since they may increase the likelihood of postoperative delirium.

Patients Can Help Reduce Their Risk Too

While anesthesiologists are factoring in those strategies, you can reduce the risk that you (or your loved one) will have postoperative delirium by:

Partnering with your anesthesiologist

he "silver tsunami" of people 65 and older combined with the uptick in surgeries during the winter months is creating the perfect storm for a sometimes-overlooked issue - postoperative delirium. More common in older people, postoperative delirium can cause symptoms such as confusion, memory problems, or agitation that are usually temporary, but can lead to longer hospital stays and are associated with postoperative cognitive decline. However, if you or a loved one are 65 or older and having surgery, there are ways to reduce the risk, starting with talking to your anesthesiologist before the procedure.

Various factors can increase the risk of postoperative delirium, including the body's response to surgery, frailty and underlying medical conditions. This condition is a growing problem, considering the aging population and older adults account for more than 40% of surgeries. It affects anywhere from 5% to 52% of older adults, depending on the type of surgery and the patient's age, and the rate increases steadily with age, nearly doubling every 15 years.

"Anesthesiologists play a key role in bringing awareness to postoperative delirium and discovering ways to reduce it," said Donald E. Arnold, M.D., FACHE, FASA, president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). "Partnering with your anesthesiologist to let them know if you have health issues or other concerns is an important first step to reducing your risk."

ASA is dedicated to safeguarding patients from delirium after procedures requiring anesthesia, through its Perioperative Brain Health Initiative and by providing evidence-based strategies for health professionals and recommendations for patients.

When meeting with your anesthesiologist before surgery, be sure to discuss the following, which will help them create the best care plan for you:* Any health problems or pre-existing conditions should be communicated to the anesthesia care team.

The medications you are taking, including vitamins, herbal supplements or those for anxiety, seizures, muscle spasms or sleep, which can affect your nervous system.

If you have cognitive issues such as memory or thinking problems, including if you have ever experienced these issues after anesthesia.

• Undergoing a pre-surgery cognitive test - Ask the doctor to conduct a pre-surgery cognitive test, which can be used to determine your risks for developing ongoing cognitive problems after surgery.

• Having a recovery pal - A family member or friend should stay with you during recovery to help orient you and report any signs of postoperative delirium to your doctor right away.

• Making the recovery environment as familiar as possible - Ask that your hearing aids or glasses be given to you as soon as you are in recovery. If you are staying overnight in the hospital, bring a family photo or favorite item to help you feel more connected as you recover.

NAVIGATING YOUR FINANCES DURING A PRESIDENTIAL TRANSITION

t’s common to wonder how a new presidential administration will impact your wallet. As policies and regulations change, many people are left questioning what it means for their money.

ACCORDING TO FINANCIAL PROFESSIONALS, HERE’S HOW TO SAFELY NAVIGATE YOUR FINANCES DURING A PRESIDENTIAL TRANSITION:

Take market coverage with a grain of salt

Media headlines might feel overwhelming, but it’s wise to avoid making big investment decisions based solely on the 24-hour news cycle. Unlike what you may hear, U.S. market growth and resilience have historically remained steady regardless of the political climate. For investment planning and advice, always rely on trusted resources, such as the insights of your financial advisor.

Focus on fundamentals

Market volatility around election cycles is historically short-lived, so now is not the time to

try to game the system, fully revamp your portfolio, or reverse course on your long-term investment strategy. As always, you should stay focused on sound investment principles, like diversification and compound interest.

Examine your tax strategy

Consider whether your tax strategy will need tweaking in light of laws ushered in by the new administration. Whether it is your capital gains taxes or your small business taxes, new regulations can impact what you pay. Your financial advisor can help ensure you continue to maximize every dollar you earn.

Take a look at your savings

Policies coming out of Washington could affect healthcare costs, energy prices, Social Security income and other factors that impact your overall financial picture. Work with a professional to create a holistic financial plan that is both tailored to your needs and adaptable to change.

Navigating your finances during a presidential transition can feel tricky but with a big-picture mentality and the partnership of a qualified financial advisor, you can meet your financial goals.

7 Tips to Help Protect You from Financial Fraud

cammers seem to be getting more and more sophisticated, and older adults are often the target - especially of financial scams. In fact, scams targeting Americans 60 and older resulted in over $3.4 billion in losses in 2023, an 11% jump from the previous year, according to the 2023 FBI Elder Fraud report.

And imposter fraud is on the rise. That email seemingly from your bank or broker, the urgent message from a tech company alerting you to a computer problem, or the notorious grandparents scam saying your grandchild is in trouble and needs money - all are examples of imposter fraud. It's easy to be tricked by these schemes, so we all need to be on alert and aware of how to protect ourselves and our finances.

Here are seven ideas to help you avoid falling prey to financial fraud:

Look out for unsolicited offers

These can come from a text, email, or messaging app, as well as on the phone. Don't rely on caller ID to determine if a call is legitimate. Scammers use tools to make it appear they're calling from a genuine government or business number. Instead, confirm independently whether a business, utility, or government agency is indeed trying to reach you. If you receive a call from a company you do business with and they ask for information, consider hanging up and calling the company directly using the customer service number listed on your invoice, account statement, or the corporate or government website. And be sure to report imposter scams to the company or institution being impersonated.

Avoid clicking suspicious links

Don't click on links or attachments included in unknown or suspicious emails and texts. In an email, hover over links to reveal the website's URL and see where the link really goes, and double-check the sender's domain name in the email address to ensure it matches what you'd expect to see.

Beware of urgency and pressure tactics

Be cautious of communications urging immediate action or pressuring you to invest quickly with promises of guaranteed or unusually high returns. And be wary of investment opportunities based on alleged "insider" or confidential information.

Remember: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Check before giving remote access to your computer Before giving someone remote access, especially if they proactively contact you saying there's an issue or suspected fraud, call the phone number listed on your financial institution's public site to verify you're speaking with someone from the firm.

If you get an unsolicited call offering to fix a computer prob-

lem, hang up immediately. Companies like Apple and Microsoft will not contact you for tech support unless you've requested help, and they won't ask for personal information.

Don't give out sensitive information

Is someone asking for credit card details, your Social Security number, or your one-time-password? That's a red flag. Never share sensitive information unless you're sure you know who you're dealing with. Be skeptical of anyone requesting that you share your one-time password, as criminals may be requesting your code so they can log in and access your money.

Don't send money to someone you don't know

There are so many easy ways to send money these days. Be extra cautious. Make it a rule to never send money to someone you don't know, someone you think you may know but aren't sure, or someone you've only met online.

Establish a trusted contact at your financial firm

As an added layer of protection to keep your accounts safe, many financial firms ask you to designate a trusted contact in case you can't be reached. This can be a friend or family member over 18 years old who you trust and who is likely to know your current situation. If a financial firm suspects fraudulent or unusual activity on your account but can't reach you, your trusted contact can confirm things like your current contact information, health status, and other parties on your account.

Your financial firm may not require you to name a trusted contact, but it's a good idea as a second line of defense. And be sure to update your trusted contacts regularly.

Whether you're concerned for yourself or a loved one, share these tips and encourage everyone you know to protect themselves in the face of increasing financial fraud.

cammers don’t take days off. From phishing emails to package theft, fraudsters and scammers can cost you money.

Fortunately, you can stay one step ahead of them with these simple tips to help protect yourself.

Strengthen your online security

Safeguard your accounts by using unique, 12-character passwords and enabling multi-factor authentication whenever possible. Avoid using public Wi-Fi, such as free internet connectivity in coffee shops or libraries, where cyber criminals might be lurking to access your information. Instead, it’s safer to use your phone’s mobile hotspot. Be cautious of unsolicited emails or messages promising prizes or freebies — if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Block and report anything suspicious before deleting it. And ask your

MOBILE TRAILERS SECURITY

provider what services they offer for safe browsing to block malicious links.

Donate only to trusted charities

Before making charitable donations, check online reviews by looking up the organization and “complaint” or “scam,” or use trusted resources. Use a credit card instead of a debit card as they offer stronger fraud protections and don’t give scammers direct access to your bank account.

Use your wireless provider’s scam protection

Scammers often rely on robocalls and spoofed numbers to make calls look inviting to answer. Most providers have protection from robocalling and spoofing by dialing certain codes.

Monitor deliveries and protect packages

Mail and package theft happen all year round, especially as online shopping continues to grow. Track your shipments in real time using delivery notifications and apps. Consider installing a smart door camera to monitor activity on your front porch. Many models offer live video feeds and motion detection, sending real-time alerts so you can quickly contact authorities, if needed.

Stay informed and report suspicious activity

Stay updated on the latest scams with resources like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). If you encounter suspicious or fraudulent activity, report it to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint and the National Center for Disaster Fraud. By reporting scams, you can help protect others and reduce the spread of fraudulent schemes.

ALEARNING AI FOR CAREER ADVANCEMENT

rtificial intelligence (AI) undeniably continues to shape the workplace. Companies across the globe are navigating how to integrate AI into their business operations and strategies-- making it increasingly paramount for professionals to keep the pace with these modern tech advancements.

This AI-focused landscape might be overwhelming for some, but there is a significant opportunity for workers to excel by learning new skills and enhancing existing ones. Based on new research conducted by Reputation Leaders and sponsored by DeVry University, there are several considerations individuals should keep in mind when working to progress in an economy influenced by AI.

AI skills are no longer a ‘nice-to-have’ Gone are the days when AI was a distant concept; it is now a present-day reality shifting current roles and creating new ones. From automating routine tasks to providing data-driven insights, AI tools are changing what businesses and their workers need in order to succeed in the future. Employers recognize this, with the research finding that 73% believe hiring more people with AI skills will benefit their organization. Meanwhile, most workers (83%) say AI skills will have some impact on their ability to remain employable.

The challenge is that while nearly nine in 10 employers (87%) are offering upskilling opportunities, they estimate on average only about half of workers (55%) participate. While employers continue to identify how to best train on AI, this signals a vast opportunity for workers to take advantage of their company's continuing education offerings. If they are not sure how to align their skills with the future needs of their company, they can proactively ask how they should be upskilling for their specific career advancement.

Responsible AI use is imperative

Most workers already see the benefits of AI, such as an increased ease of working and productivity, and only one in five workers (19%) feel their job security has decreased because of the technology. In addition, AI can allow

employees to concentrate on work involving things like strategic decision-making and collaboration, rather than administrative or other mundane tasks.

With that, it is important for workers to abide by the guidelines set by their employers to make sure they are using the technology responsibly and can take advantage of its benefits. In fact, half of employers say AI poses potential data privacy and confidentiality risks for their organization. If workers are not sure how or when to use AI in their roles, they should be cautious when experimenting with the technology and ask their manager about the best options for proper training.

Learning for the future doesn't require a traditional degree

There are a variety of options for workers to acquire new skills, and this does not always necessitate a four-year college degree. Engaging with academic institutions that offer flexible, accessible and personalized alternate learning pathways can help workers pursue their desired career ambitions while balancing other commitments.

Seventy-five percent of employers agree that people who take the initiative to upskill or reskill, including in AI, will get ahead in their careers. If a worker is unsure about their employer's professional development offerings, they should ask their HR department about available resources for ongoing learning. This could include earning certifications, certificates or participating in other targeted skills development opportunities funded by employers.

Lifelong learning can have a positive impact on career mobility. While workers should not be alone in their quest to learn, this quest requires a sense of individual ambition to keep up in an AI-driven era.

How to Improve Your Kids' Experiences on Social Media

new global survey commissioned by LG Electronics found social media can be a source of anxiety for young people. Almost half of the respondents (45%) reported their social media feeds consist of an equal or greater amount of negative rather than positive content. In fact, more than one in four (28%) claimed negative content on social media feeds has increased their anxiety, and one in five (20%) said it has made them unhappy.

AWhile it can be normal to worry about how social media impacts your child's mental health-especially if you struggle to limit their time spent on social media-- there are simple ways your child can adjust their feeds to provide more positive scrolling experiences.

Algorithms determine what users see on social media by predicting content they're likely to engage with based on past engagement. These algorithms can send anyone down specific niches-- for good and bad. Research shows that it's possible to quickly go down negative rabbit holes and encounter harmful content.

How can you help your kids enjoy the positive benefits of social media-- like connecting with friends and family, being entertained and sharing happy moments-- without experiencing potential harm?

HERE ARE CONCRETE ACTIONS THAT CAN HELP YOUR KIDS ENJOY WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA.

Model good behavior

It's often said kids pay more attention to what you do than what you say. With that in mind, consider how you use social media. Are you glued to your feed for hours? Do you vocalize negative content you're seeing?

Notice how much you're scrolling, and what you say about it. Can you share positive, upbeat content with your kids instead of the negative? If you do see something negative, consider how you communicate the feelings it brought up for you and why you chose not to interact with it.

Open the conversation

By talking about what you see on social media and how it makes you feel, you're opening a conversation with your kids and letting them know you're there to listen when they have feelings about what they see.

Ask them what they enjoy about social media and what they don't. What do they do when they encounter something that makes them uncomfortable or sad? Listening is crucial to keep communication channels open.

Find workable limits

While it may be impossible to completely prevent your kid from using social media, you can impose limits. Your home's Wi-Fi router likely has features allowing you to control when your kids have access to the internet and the ability to ban sites. You may want to ensure they're interacting with social media in common areas rather than spending too much time alone with internet access.

It's also recommended to keep phones and other devices out of bedrooms to limit social media exposure and promote a good night's sleep. Need kids to wake up early? Use an old-fashioned alarm clock.

How much control you impose will be based on your child's age and other considerations unique to your family. Again, talking with your kids is the best way to ensure they know the pitfalls and red flags they should be aware of online.

Improve their feeds

Tackle negative content on social media by discovering upbeat, positive and optimistic content. This is a simple way to help reset your kids' and your social feeds, inviting more uplifting content you can feel good about.

As social media continues to be an integral part of everyone's lives, by being more conscious about what you and your kids interact with, you'll be choosing to bring stronger optimism, balance and happiness to your lives this school year.

HOUSTON AIRPORTS REPORTS

RECORD TRAVEL, 99% DROP IN SEVERE TRAFFIC AT IAH

id you travel by plane this past holiday season? Houston Airports recorded a record-breaking holiday travel season marked by increased passenger traffic and significant reductions in roadway congestion at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). While the holiday travel period officially ended on Monday, January 6, early data shows that from December 20 to Dec. 30, 2024, Bush Airport welcomed 1.7 million passengers—300,000 more than during the same period in 2023, Houston Airports officials said.

In addition, Houston Airports reportedly achieved “measurable improvements” in traffic flow, “highlighting the success of recent infrastructure upgrades, enhanced customer service strategies and operational improvements,” according to a news release.

Traffic reductions that set a new standard

During the 11-day holiday travel period:

• Heavy traffic periods entering Bush Airport were down 90%, compared to last Christmas

• Severe traffic periods dropped by 99%

Last Christmas, drivers experienced 5.4 hours of severe traffic conditions entering IAH. This year, severe traffic was reduced to two minutes, the release stated.

“Our goal was to deliver a seamless journey during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports. “The results show that our investments in infrastructure, technology and customer service are paying off. We are proud of our team and the traveling public for working together to make this holiday season a success. Our coordinated efforts between Houston Airports and Houston Police kept traffic flowing smoothly at our departure curbs while passengers followed instructions and used cell phones lots effectively. These efforts, paired with infrastructure improvements like the new International Arrivals Curb and expanded Terminal C garage entrance, demonstrate our commitment to delivering world-class service and efficiency.”

The new International Central Processor opens in the first of two phases. In early 2025, 11 lanes on the upper level will open as United Airlines transitions Terminal E check-in operations to the new facility.

The construction projects, including the IAH International Terminal, the IAH Terminal B Transformation, and the HOU 7-gate expansion, are to help improve critical infrastructure at the airport.

Here’s a simple and healthy recipe for turkey spaghetti with zucchini noodles.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE TURKEY SAUCE

• 1 pound ground turkey

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

• 1 small onion, finely chopped

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 1 (14-ounce) can crushed tomatoes

• 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste

• 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

• 1 teaspoon dried basil

• 1 teaspoon paprika (optional)

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for spice)

• 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

INGREDIENTS FOR THE ZUCCHINI NOODLES

• 4 medium zucchinis, spiralized into noodles

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

• Salt and pepper to taste

Optional Garnishes

• Fresh basil leaves

• Grated Parmesan cheese

DIRECTIONS

Cook the Turkey Sauce

1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

2. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 3–4 minutes.

3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

4. Add the ground turkey, breaking it into small pieces. Cook until browned and fully cooked, about 5–7 minutes.

5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, basil, paprika, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using).

6. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste and adjust seasoning.

PREPARE THE ZUCCHINI NOODLES

1. Heat olive oil in a separate large skillet over medium heat.

2. Add the spiralized zucchini noodles and sauté for 2–3 minutes, just until slightly softened. (Do not overcook to avoid sogginess.)

3. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

ASSEMBLE THE DISH

• Plate the zucchini noodles and spoon the turkey sauce generously on top.

• Garnish with fresh basil leaves and Parmesan cheese, if desired.

TIPS

• For a richer flavor, let the sauce simmer longer (up to 30 minutes).

• If you don’t have a spiralizer, you can use a vegetable peeler or buy pre-spiralized zucchini noodles.

• To keep the zucchini noodles from getting watery, sprinkle them with a little salt before cooking and pat dry with a paper towel.
