Measles Fears in the United States: What you Should Know
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced its plans for an agency-wide reorganization.
In a news release from the agency, SBA mentioned plans to reduce its workforce by 43% –ending the “expansive social policy agenda of the prior Administration, eliminating non-essential roles, and returning to pre-pandemic staffing levels,” the release stated.
Under the reorganization plan, the agency says it will eliminate approximately 2,700 active positions out of a total active workforce of nearly 6,500 through voluntary resignations, the expiration of COVID-era and other term appointments, and a limited number of reductions in force (RIFs).
According to SBA, core services to the public, including the agency’s loan guarantee and disaster assistance programs, as well as its field and veteran operations, will not be impacted.
“The SBA’s reorganization will enable the agency to become a dynamic and efficient force for small businesses, manufacturing, and job creation in support of President Trump’s economic agenda,” the release stated. “SBA will refocus its resources on the core missions of supplying capital, fostering innovation, supporting veteran small business owners, providing field support, and delivering timely disaster relief.”
SBA OFFICIALS SAY KEY FEATURES OF THE REORGANIZATION INCLUDE:
• Promoting business formation and growth by shifting resources to expand capital formation functions and personnel, removing the emphasis from partisan programs.
• Prioritizing risk management and fraud prevention by centralizing these functions within the Office of the Chief Financial Officer.
• Expanding disaster response support by transferring disaster loan servicing functions and additional personnel into the Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience. Additionally, the agency will cross-train field office personnel to support disaster recovery efforts.
• Eliminating redundant pandemic-era positions associated exclusively with processing pandemic-era loans within the Office of Capital Access.
• Ensuring that 30% of the agency is located in the field, by decentralizing services and working to better serve Main Streets across America.
• Promoting veteran businesses and American manufacturing by preserving existing staffing levels within the Office of Veterans Business Development and the Office of Manufacturing and Trade.
• Exempting key accountability offices from reductions at this time, including the Office of Advocacy and the Office of the Inspector General.

he U.S. stock markets have continued to experience significant declines, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping to start the week at 890 points (2.1%) to close at 41,912. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite also fell to begin the week by 2.7% and 4%, respectively.
TThe downturn has heightened concerns among Black investors, who have historically faced challenges in wealth accumulation and market participation.
“When the ‘check engine’ light is on in America, the car is on the side of the road for Black America,” Antjuan Seawright, a strategist, said in an earlier published interview. “We always feel the pain more than other constituencies.”
Financial advisors recommend that Black investors maintain a cautious approach during this period of volatility. According to a report by T. Rowe Price, many Black/African American investors are seeking guidance on financial topics and are interested in having a financial “coach” to help manage their
The report states, “Two out of three (67%) Black/African Americans want to know as much as possible about financial topics. 62% would like a financial ‘coach’ to help manage their financial health.”
Experts have also stressed the importance of building an emergency fund covering six to twelve months of expenses, which can provide financial stability during job loss or economic downturns. Additionally, reviewing and adjusting budgets to distinguish between essential and non-essential expenses can help manage finances more effectively. Enhancing skills to remain competitive in the job market is also advised for career security. Prioritizing debt repayment, especially high-interest debt like credit cards, can prevent financial strain during economic downturns.
The looming threat of a government shutdown adds another layer of uncertainty. The Black Economic Alliance has expressed concern that such a shutdown could exacerbate racial economic inequality and inflict long-lasting harm on the U.S. economy. They highlight that the prolonged loss of income poses significant hardships for federal workers, including Black employees from communities still struggling to overcome generations of systemic exclusion from econom-
The 2020 Ariel-Schwab Black Investor Survey revealed that only 55% of Black Americans reported stock market investments, compared to 71% of white Americans. This disparity results in middle-class Black Americans having less money saved for retirement and less wealth to pass on to future generations. Mellody Hobson, co-CEO and President of Ariel Investments emphasized the urgency of addressing this gap, stating, “Black Americans are already behind the eight ball, and it is disheartening to see that at current savings and investing rates, the wealth gap will continue to expand, endangering our futures and leaving our families exposed.”
Hobson said by staying informed and proactive, Black investors can better navigate the challenges posed by economic downturns and policy changes, working towards financial resilience and stability.
“We are resilient people, and so we have proven time and time again … we will fight, and we’ll get creative in our fight,” Seawright asserted. “We’re gonna have to use all those tactics and strategies in order to not just thrive for the next four years but survive.”

The world is mourning the loss of boxing legend, businessman and Texas native George Foreman after his family announced his death on Friday, March 21, 2025. He was 76.
“Our hearts are broken,” a post/statement on Foreman’s Instagram page said. “A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose.”
As stated by his family in the post, Foreman, affectionately known as “Big George,” was a humanitarian, Olympian and two-time heavyweight champion of the world.
“He was deeply respected – a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name—for his family.”
The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and prayers they’ve received and asked for privacy as they honor the “extraordinary life of a man” whom they loved.
Born George Edward Foreman in Marshall, Texas, on Jan. 10, 1949, and raised in Houston’s Fifth Ward, Foreman overcame a life of adversity on his journey to eventually become the heavyweight champion of the world.
He was an impoverished youth who went into the Lyndon B. Johnson Job Corps, a program developed to help disadvantaged kids by teaching them vocational job skills. According to his bio, Foreman traveled to California, where he met Doc Broaddus, a Job Corps counselor and a boxing coach. It was Broaddus who encouraged Foreman to become a boxer.
In the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, he won a gold medal. In 1969, he turned professional. Within two years, he was declared the no. 1 challenger by the World Boxing

Association and World Boxing Council. By 1972, Foreman had a 37-0 record, which included 35 knockouts, his bio states.
Foreman became the heavyweight champion of the world after he fought Joe Frazier on Jan. 22, 1973, in Kingston, Jamaica. He successfully defended the title twice, before challenging Muhammad Ali in one of the biggest bouts in sports history— “The Rumble in the Jungle.”
On Oct. 30, 1974, in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)), Foreman and Ali went toe-to-toe in the historic battle, which became a benchmark for greatness in the boxing and sports worlds. The fight received much global attention, turning all eyes to the continent of Africa. According to CNN, over 1 billion people worldwide watched the fight, making it one of the most watched events of its time. Though Foreman lost to Ali, the fight helped further solidify both of their names in sports history. To this day, it is one of the greatest sporting events the globe has ever seen.
Both Ali and Foreman’s families joined together at a press conference on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, to reflect on the 50th anniversary of the “Rumble in the Jungle.” The gathering represented a monumental combination of history, legacy, and love, celebrating not just the battle but the bridge it built between nations, cultures, and families.
Ali’s daughters and Foreman’s children honored Big George at the event, giving him his “flowers” and highlighting the respect and admiration shared between their families.
“Our fathers spent so many years really talking about how

much they cared for each other and loved each other. They passed that down to us,” George Foreman Jr. explained during an interview with d-mars.com. “This was our first time as a group getting together for a picture and it was like we showed up to a family reunion with long-lost cousins. We didn’t skip a beat. It was amazing.”
In addition, Minister Didier Budimbu, DRC Minister of Sports and Entertainment, announced the renaming of the stadium in DRC, where the fight took place, to the “Ali-Foreman” Stadium.
Foreman was also known for being a man of faith, having had what some may call a “spiritual awakening” after a fight in Puerto Rico on March 17, 1977. In 1978, he became an ordained minister and began preaching in Houston. In 1980, Foreman founded The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Big George was also known for his philanthropic work. In 1984, he founded the George Foreman Youth and Community Center, a place for kids in need of guidance and direction.
Foreman was no stranger to being a successful businessman. To this day, more than 100 million George Foreman Lean Mean Grilling Machine units have been sold worldwide. He also had a line of cleaning products, an exclusive line of personal care products, a prescription shoe for diabetics to prevent amputations, a restaurant franchise called UFood Grille, and 10 books, according to his bio.
The d-mars.com team sends our prayers and condolences to his family and loved ones as they mourn such a great loss.
TSU Debate Team Wins International Forensic Association Championship in South Korea
exas Southern University's Debate Team won the 35th Annual International Forensics Association's Speech and Debate Tournament held March 7-9, 2025, in Incheon, South Korea.
Texas Southern was among 27 teams to compete in the tournament, including those from learning institutions such as Vanderbilt University, Southern Methodist University, and Bradley University, to name a few.
In addition to winning the first-place sweepstakes award as the overall championship team, the team earned 21 awards, including first place in Poetry, Dramatic Interpretation, and Duo Dramatic Interpretation. They also earned fourth and fifth place top Parliamentary Debate Speakers Awards.
"Our team has worked tirelessly honing their skills as debaters while representing Texas Southern on the grandest of stages," said head debate coach Dr. Gloria Batiste-Roberts. "This championship reflects the dedication we see daily. I could not be prouder of this accomplishment for this group of scholars and for our university. It is a true embodiment of excellence in achievement."
This win marks the debate team's fifth IFA championship, the most recent occurring in 2018.
"When we competed in this competition in Ireland last year, the result wasn't what we prepared for and it motivated us to work harder throughout the year to be ready for this moment," said debate team member Jaila Hampton. "It was gratifying to compete at the level to which we knew we were capable. We are excited to bring another international championship back to Texas Southern."
Established in 1949 by the late Dr. Thomas F. Freeman, the TSU debate team provides students a platform for forensic arts, including parliamentary debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, persuasive oratory, informative speaking, after-dinner speaking, poetry, prose, dramatic and duo dramatic interpretation, impromptu and extemporaneous speaking, and reader's theater.
"We won first place in all four of the tournaments we'd been on," Dr. Batiste-Roberts added. "But then to top it off with the championship was a wonderful and heartwarming experience for the students, and for me because I'm reminded always of our founder Dr. Thomas F. Freeman, who brought so much to the debate team as its founder and coach for over 70 years. He passed in 2020, but his spirit is still alive with us."

“The risk of natural disasters and rising insurance costs are profoundly reshaping the housing market. Home buyers are paying attention,” said Kara Ng, a senior economist at Zillow. “With trillions of dollars in real estate vulnerable to these risks, informed decision-making for what is the biggest purchase of many buyers’ lives has never been more critical.”
Eleven major metro areas have at least $100 billion of residential real estate with a major risk of fire, including four in Texas– Dallas ($230.9 billion), Houston ($55.8 billion), San Antonio ($71.7 billion) and Austin ($77.7 billion). Ways to HealthierBoost Living
Have you ever thought about all the ways food brings people together? We encourage individuals to explore the importance of making informed food choices while developing healthy eating and physical activity habits.
Sharing meals brings people together in ways that hold deep cultural and social meaning across communities worldwide, providing opportunities to learn about food preparation, the origins of ingredients, and the history behind the people who create the dishes. Health, memories, traditions, seasons and access all play a role in shaping people's relationships with food and sharing meals can enhance social connections and strengthen community bonds. While all these factors influence the foods you eat, that food in turn also affects your health. Fully embrace a healthy lifestyle by learning how food connects people to their cultures, families and communities - both their own and others. Registered dietitian nutritionists and nutrition and dietetics technicians all play a critical role in helping people understand the connection between the foods individuals and communities eat, and how these foods impact everyone's health throughout their lives.
HERE ARE TIPS FROM EXPERTS FOR IMPROVING YOUR HEALTH:
1. Make time to learn
Experts dedicate significant time to educating and helping people achieve the nutrition they need for a healthier lifestyle. Learning how to read and understand nutrition labels is one crucial step, along with understanding the importance of eating nutrient-dense foods - ingredients containing many essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients you need, without a lot of empty calories that are devoid of nutritional value.
To help you get started, there are plenty of online resources on nutrition where you can find tips for shopping and meal planning. Focusing on ways to prepare well-balanced meals, rather than opting for the quickest and easiest snacks, is key to fostering better health and well-being for you and your family.
2. Find community and connection
How you cook and eat together with family, friends and your community can impact your health and wellness goals. Activities like shopping, cooking together and having children spend time with you in the kitchen can help your whole family build healthier habits. Your children will learn from your example as you prioritize choosing quality ingredients and prepare them with care to make healthy meals.
You can also enhance that sense of connection by sharing meals with extended family, friends and other community members.
3. Practice mindful eating
Pay attention to the origins of your food, as well as how you consume it. Learning where ingredients come from and how they are best prepared can enhance your appreciation for meals and encourage healthier habits.
Increase mindfulness by turning meals into special occasions where distractions (like phones) are set aside. Spend time enjoying the food and each other's company as you share the meal together. Slow down to appreciate each bite of food so you can not only savor the flavors and the social occasion but help decrease everyone's tendency to overeat.
4. Prioritize nutrition
Focus on creating well-balanced meals that include a variety of nutrients. Even when you do your best, statistics show that the American diet does not always provide the proper amount of some key nutrients that are needed for the body to function optimally. It's all too easy to lean on convenience over substance, which can have a negative impact on long-term health. Certain products can help supplement your diet with essential nutrients, ensuring you get the nutrition you need.
5. Stay active together
Combine more nutrition-focused eating with physical activity with family or friends to create a healthier lifestyle for everyone. Incorporate exercise into your daily routine through group activities at nutrition clubs, personal workouts and/or family outdoor activities. You can start with simple family walks or bike rides before or after dinner.

Against the Odds: Empowerment, Education, and Action for Thriving in the Face of Disparities
By Frenetta Tate News Provider

and personal development.
April marks National Minority Health Month – a time to recognize the health disparities that have plagued communities of color for far too long. But this month is more than an observance. It is a rallying cry. A declaration that despite the odds, despite the barriers, and despite a system that hasn’t always served us well – we still have power. We still have choices. We still have a say in how we live, how we heal, and how we thrive. But first, we must tell the truth.
THE WEIGHT OF THE DISPARITIES
The numbers are sobering. Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnan cy-related causes. Diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure disproportionately affect Black, Latino, and Indigenous communities. Mental health concerns go untreated, while access to affordable, quality care remains an uphill battle.
These aren’t just statistics, they are lived experiences in our families, our neighbor hoods, and our own bodies.
But while the system may be flawed, we are not powerless. Health equity may be the goal, but self-advocacy is the starting point.
KNOW THE ODDS, BUT OWN YOUR POWER
We cannot wait for perfect conditions to start prioritizing our health. We cannot afford to ignore symptoms, delay appointments, or chalk up serious issues to “just stress” or “just getting old.”
This is your moment to choose differently.
HERE ARE FIVE PRACTICAL, POWERFUL WAYS TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH—STARTING TODAY:
1) Know Your Numbers
We pay either way. One bill comes at the register. The other comes in hospital visits, prescriptions, and often, regrets.
Get your annual checkups. Track your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and BMI. Preventive care saves lives. As the saying goes, ‘You can’t manage what you don’t measure.’ That’s not just a business principle—it’s a wellness truth. If you don’t know your blood pressure, your A1C, your cholesterol, how can you improve it? Awareness is not fear—it’s power. It’s the first step in reclaiming your health.
2) Be Your Own Advocate
Do not be afraid to ask questions, request second opinions, or speak up when something feels off. Bring someone with you to appointments if needed. You have every right to be heard and taken seriously. No one knows your body, your symptoms, or your story like you do. Don’t be afraid to demand better care. Your voice is not a disruption—it’s a necessity.
3) Move Your Body – Don’t Overthink it.
You don’t need a gym membership, designer leggings, or a 60-minute workout plan. You just need to move. That’s it. Walk around the block. Dance while you’re cooking. Stretch while watching TV. March in place while brushing your teeth. Movement doesn’t have to be complicated to be transformational. Don’t let shame, age, weight, or ability stop you. Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can—and do it consistent ly. Motion is medicine. It energizes your mind, strengthens your heart, and uplifts your mood.
4) Eat to Live, Not to Fill
It’s time we shift our relationship with food—from one of survival or emotional comfort to one of intentional nourishment. Food is more than flavor. It’s fuel. It’s healing. It’s information for the body. Fuel your body with intention.
LET’S KEEP IT REAL: YES, HEALTHIER FOOD CAN BE MORE EXPENSIVE.
A BAG OF CHIPS COSTS LESS THAN A BAG OF APPLES. ORGANIC ANYTHING FEELS LIKE A LUXURY. AND FAST-FOOD DEALS HIT HARDER WHEN YOU’RE ON A TIGHT BUDGET. THAT’S NOT YOUR IMAGINATION, IT’S A REAL BARRIER, AND IT’S PART OF A LARGER SYSTEMIC ISSUE. BUT HERE’S WHAT’S ALSO REAL:
- The cost of medication for chronic illnesses
- Time lost from work due to preventable conditions
- ER visits that could’ve been avoided
5) Prioritize Mental and Emotional Well-being
Our minds carry heavy loads. Give yourself permission to rest, to heal, and to ask for help. Therapy, journaling, prayer, meditation, and community care are all part
CREATE A CULTURE OF WELLNESS AROUND YOU
This isn’t just about you. When you make health a priority, you give your children a new legacy. You change the dinner conversation. You normalize walking, wellness, and mental health check-ins in your circle. It becomes a culture. And culture is how we pass down healing. You may not have children but anytime you prioritize health, you are planting positive seeds that grow trees of wisdom and enlightenment for others.
A WORD TO THE CAREGIVERS: THE SILENT WARRIORS
To every daughter advocating for a mother who won’t go to the doctor...
To every son trying to help a father manage diabetes but getting met with resistance...
To every spouse coordinating appointments, researching diagnoses, and carrying the invisible weight of someone else’s well-being— We see you.
Care giving is sacred. It’s a form of love that often goes unnoticed, under appreciated, and emotionally draining. Remember to set boundaries. Ask for help. Care for yourself, too. Because you matter just as much. Self-care is not selfish. Self-care is Salvation.
To those who are avoiding, resisting, or flat-out refusing to deal with their health.
You say, “I’m fine.”
You say, “I don’t like doctors.”
You say, “What I don’t know won’t hurt me.”
But here’s the truth: What you don’t address is already hurting you—and the people around you.
YOUR REFUSAL TO GET HELP PUTS YOUR FAMILY IN EMOTIONAL TURMOIL.
It turns loved ones into emergency planners. It causes avoidable pain and preventable suffering. And at some point, it forces others to make decisions for you—often in crisis, often in tears.
We don’t want to bury you early because you were too afraid, too prideful, or too stubborn to face the truth.
You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be willing.
• Willing to schedule the appointment
• Willing to take the medication
• Willing to let others support you
- The emotional toll on families when a loved one is constantly in and out of care
• Willing to choose life–over fear, over denial, over delay
There is no shame in needing help. The shame is in knowing better and still doing nothing.
You are loved. You are needed. And you are not invincible. Accept the help.
THIS MONTH–AND EVERY MONTH–CHOOSE LIFE
Let National Minority Health Month be more than an awareness transformational month. Whether you’re taking the first step for yourself or speaking up for someone who can’t–do it now. Do it boldly. Do it with love.
We may be up against the odds, but we are not without options. Your health is your responsibility. Your choices matter. You are worth the work it takes to be well and so are the people you love.
IMeasles Fears in the United States: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
By Frenetta Tate News Provider
f you are worried about recent reports of measles exposure in the state of Texas, you are not alone.
The Texas Department of State Health Services is reporting an outbreak of measles in the South Plains and Panhandle regions of the state. At this time, 422 cases have been identified in Texas since late January and 42 of the patients have been hospitalized. There has been one fatality in a school-aged child who lived in the outbreak area. The child was not vaccinated and had no known underlying conditions.
Due to the highly contagious nature of this virus, additional cases are likely to occur in the outbreak area and the surrounding communities. DSHS is working with local health departments to investigate.
Here is what you should know about the virus as it makes its rounds, already reaching several different areas in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
Measles is a highly contagious virus that can lead to serious complications, especially in young children and individuals with weakened immune systems.
As of March 27, 2025, a total of 483 confirmed measles cases were reported by 20 jurisdictions: Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, New York State, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Washington.
The CDC says there have been five outbreaks (defined as three or more related cases) reported in 2025, and 93% of cases (447 of 483) are outbreak-associated. To compare, 16 outbreaks were reported during 2024 and 69% of cases (198 of 285) were outbreak-associated.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF MEASLES INCLUDE:
• High fever (as high as 105°F)
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red and watery eyes
• Tiny white spots that may appear inside the mouth 2-3 days after symptoms begin
• Rash 3-5 days after other signs of illness. The “measles rash” typically starts at the face and then spreads down to the rest of the body
According to DSHS, measles can be prevented with a measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR or MMRV). The MMR vaccine protects against three diseases: measles, mumps and rubella. The MMRV vaccine protects against four diseases: measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chickenpox). They are administered in two doses and are highly effective: two doses are 97% effective against measles and one dose is 93% effective. The spread of measles can be prevented if a two-dose coverage of the vaccine remains at 95% or above in the community.
Individuals who have not been vaccinated are at greater risk of infection. DSHS says it is important to ensure people are up to date on their vaccinations to protect themselves and those around them.
Review your immunization and medical records to check if you are protected against measles. Those who have not had measles or the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine may not be protected and should consult a healthcare provider about getting vaccinated.
Contact your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, have an infant, or have a weakened immune system, regardless of your vaccination history.
Monitor for symptoms such as fever or an unexplained rash from four to 21 days after exposure.
IF YOU HAVE ANY SYMPTOMS, YOU ARE URGED TO TAKE THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS:
• Stay home
• Avoid school, work, and large gatherings
• Call a healthcare provider right away
• Do not enter a healthcare facility without first notifying them about your measles exposure and symptoms so you do not expose other patients.
• If you think you may have been exposed or are showing symptoms, you are urged to contact your healthcare provider immediately.

MILLIONS OF AMERICANS JUGGLING SIDE HUSTLES TO MAKE ENDS MEET
ABy Stacy M. Brown News Provider
new 2025 Side Hustle Survey from Lending Tree shows that nearly half of Americans, 44%, have a side hustle, with many depending on the extra income to cover basic expenses. The findings reflect the financial strain millions face as wages remain stagnant and the cost of living continues to rise.
Among those with a side hustle, 43% say they need the additional income to stay afloat. Seventy-one percent report earning less than $500 per month, and nearly a quarter make less than $100 per month. The survey also found that younger generations are the most likely to take on extra work, with 60% of Gen Z respondents and 55% of millennials reporting that they have a side hustle. That compares to 39% of Gen X and 24% of baby boomers. While 18% of side hustlers bring in at least $1,000 per month, most earn far less.
The unpredictable nature of gig work and rising inflation continue to impact financial stability, leaving many struggling to keep up.
“The median amount our side hustlers earned monthly was $400, but the average was $1,215,” Matt Schultz wrote for Lending Tree.
Considering how tight many households’ budgets are, $1,215 is nothing short of a game-changing monthly amount. Men report earning more than double what women say they earn — an average of $1,580 versus $749.
A separate study from FinanceBuzz analyzed more than 75 of the largest cities in the United States to determine where Americans are at the highest risk of burnout. The report
Tips to Spring Clean Your Budget
ranked Denver, Dallas, and Washington, D.C., as the most overworked cities. Denver landed in the top spot, with nearly 62% of households having two or more people working full-time jobs. Dallas workers spend almost 45 hours per week at work or commuting, tied with New York City for the second-highest total in the country behind Miami. The percentage of Dallas’ 65-and-older population still active in the workforce is also among the highest in the nation, with 25.4% still working. The report ranked Detroit as the least overworked city, followed by Tallahassee and Buffalo. Detroit has the lowest percentage of senior citizens in the workforce, at just 13.5%, and the lowest percentage of employees working at least 50 weeks per year, with only 77.1% meeting that threshold.
While platforms like Uber, DoorDash, and Etsy provide flexible opportunities, only 31% of side hustlers say they feel financially stable. Thirty-six percent worry that their side hustle income could disappear if demand drops or economic conditions worsen. Approximately 32% report working at least 20 hours weekly on their side hustle, effectively holding down a second job.
“Sure, many people have side hustling in their blood. They’re working these side gigs because they’re passionate about them, not just because of the money,” Schultz contended. “That’s not most people, though. Many Americans take on side hustles to help them manage debt. They’ve cut their spending to the bone to try to free up money to put toward the debt before realizing they need to bring in more income to make a real dent in their problem.”

ith flowers blooming and birds chirping, you may be in a spring-cleaning mindset. As you spruce up your home, you can also channel that energy into getting your finances in tip-top shape!
According to finance professionals, here’s how to clear away the cobwebs in your budget:
Sort expenditures: If you’ve ever sorted your clothes and other items into piles during a spring clean, this budgeting principle will be familiar to you: Review your expenses and categorize them into needs, wants and expenditures you’re ready to part with. Whether you do this on paper or electronically, use a color-coded system to visualize where your money is going.
Review your streaming services: Electronic subscription bloat is common, as is paying for forgotten subscriptions after free trials end. For example, you may be subscribed to several of the most common entertainment streaming services, such as Netflix, Max and Hulu. Do you really need all of them? Whether it’s an online newsletter or a music streaming service, cancel unused subscriptions.
Avoid bank fees: Review your bank statements. Are you getting dinged with fees? Consider switching to a bank that doesn’t charge an account maintenance fee. You can also set up notifications to avoid having your account get hit with an overdraft. If you do get charged, contact your bank to explain your situation — you may be able to have some fees waived.
Switch insurance carriers: Periodically review your insurance rates and shop the market to see if better rates are available for home, automotive, and other forms of insurance.
Reduce debt: If your debt is costing you a pretty penny, it’s time to act. A finance professional or credit counselor can help you craft a plan for consolidating debt into lower-rate credit card accounts, refinancing your mortgage and reducing your overall debt burden. You should also automate credit card payments (and other bills) to ensure you aren’t paying late fees.
Pay yourself first: Earmark a portion of your budget to savings and investments each month. This will leave you with more money for your important goals and less for frivolous spending.
This spring, go beyond dusting the baseboards and mopping the floors. Refresh your finances for a fresh start to the season.
