HEALTH CARE DESIGN STUDIO FALL 2020 ARC 4011L INSTRUCTOR: HOFU WU
Palm Valley Health Center The Palm Valley Health Center is located in Arizona, and has a dry and hot climate. To combat the heat while reducing energy usage from air conditioning, our proposal is to create a street that cuts through the middle section of the site and shading the space with a wavy, cloud-like structure. This shading system not only provides shading, but also helps lower the temperature of the outdoor space from its shape. By cutting the middle section and making this street outdoor space, this allows for maximized sunlight from morning to sundown. Although there is already an existing structure in place, this modification still utilizes the majority of the structure while taking down small sections. This street is filled with vegetation and patches of gardens throughout to not only add visual pleasure for visitors and staff members, but also to help cool the space down. The vegetation can help absorb some heat gained. Around the planters are curved seatings primarily focused around the entrances to each department. While there are waiting rooms inside, patients and family members have the option to sit outside.

Be Well Hub in Irvine The facility is separated into three buildings. The spaces between these buildings as well as the three separated courtyards are intended to provide ventilation, natural light, and outdoor green spaces. Visitors and staff members enter the site from similar access points but have specified parking locations to ensure efficiency. There is an emergency stop for ambulances as well. The general public has access from the main north entrance and the west entrance, while the staff is able to enter from the east and south entrances. This separation also allows for ease of flow. The residential areas are located in the center and the second floor to provide privacy and security. Security fences are designed as a part of the building facade to create a friendly environment but still maintain high security and protection. The interior is designed with natural material and green plants to create comfort for both clients and their visitors.
