SENSE OF PASSAGE Multiple corridors, Outdoor entry to apartments, From hinged space to the silence of void space. Four active north facing voids interlock with four quiet south facing voids to bring a sense of the sacred into domestic life.

PART OF A CITY AND CULTURE: Is seen as part of a city in its effort to form space rather than an architectural object. Holl was based on that basic principle of traditional Japanese architecture such as flexibility, providing a structure to stimulate thinking and the senses of the people who would use the building.

HINGING SPACE:
The interiors are conceptualized as "hinged space," a modern interpretation of the multi-use concept of traditional Fusuma. Diurnal hinging allows expansion of the living area during the day, reclaimed by bedrooms at night. Episodic hinging reflects change in family over time; rooms can be added or subtracted accommodating grown-up children leaving or elderly parents moving in.
M A T E R I A L S
MATERIALS: The structure consists of concrete load-bearing walls with a secondary structure of pillars at the midpoints of the main bays, which correspond to the empty spaces. The east-facing facades contain aluminum corrugated enclosure panels, while the west and north faces show the loadbearing walls.

CONTEXT: The city of Fukuoka is a more organized, and less "chaotic" than usual for a Japanese city. Holl's proposal for the Nexus World is one of the more coherent of the whole project because it is based on a basic principle of traditional Japanese architecture: flexibility.

S T R U C T U R E Structure Grid There are two components which are concrete walls and 1'x1' columns that are guided by the structural grid that follows the curve shape of the building. Additional column is added at a void space to provide an opening floor plan.

Structure System the main structure of columns and walls that form 5 concrete footing that transfer the load of the building directly into the ground. While the shape of these footing help prevent the lateral load from the y direction. Another concrete wall are running through them for x direction support.

Void Space The section of the building allows the sunlight reflected in the ponds to fill the paved courtyards and the murmur of the children playing and the chatter of the cafĂŠs to seep into the meditation space. (using the pond to create separation from loud to quiet space). The corridors also allow for a sense of flow within.

View The void also create an opportunity for all apartment to interact with the outdoor environment. The exposure on all sides provide the residents an interesting experience with the different light texture that created by the reflecting pond at the void.

Ventilation The external corridors and void spaces in between each apartment allow opportunities for air flow and natural ventilation.
