A MESSAGE FROM THE LTG

Hey Blue Turtles!

!

My name is Kenny Yeung and I am proud to say that I serve you as your Lieutenant Governor for the 2015-2016 term. For those of you who don’t know me, I will certainly be the tallest and strongest person you will meet…Okay, perhaps not, but I hope that my charms and good looks will be a good substitute!
My Key Club journey began my freshmen year, and I can say this organization is truly life changing. I am a junior at San Gabriel High School and I’ve been inspired by my fellow members to serve to the best of my abilities. This club has given me a home at school, friends to call family, and opportunities to serve. I decided to run for Division 10 South’s Lieutenant Governor in hopes of giving back to the club that has given so much to me. I can honestly say that I never imagined myself being in the position I am now; I never knew that I would be so courageous to serve my division. When I was a freshman, I thought I would grow enough courage to run for president. However, I soon realized through my passion and dedication for service, I wanted to serve this organization on a larger scale. As for my plans for the division, our immediate past Lieutenant Governor, Tracy Lee, has done a magnificent job of organizing division events and being a liaison between the district and the clubs. I plan to continue legacies set by Tracy, such as her tremendous show of spirit for Fall Rally as well as to initiate my own legacies, such as implementing a stronger emphasis on service and to innovate new ideas for fundraising, like benefit concerts or brunches.

!

I am only thankful and honored for this opportunity to serve as Division 10 South’s Lieutenant Governor. I hope to meet each and every one of you individually and serve alongside you all!

! In Service, Kenny Yeung

Mark Keppel Track and Field

GOOO AZTECS! On April 23rd, Mark Keppel High School hosted a rigorous track and field meet against Schurr High School. Athletes, students, and volunteers crowded the field on a cold, yet sunny Thursday afternoon to support their school. Volunteers helped by setting up hurdles, recording scores, cheering on teammates, and other activities. What could possibly be better than showing school spirit while also dedicating your time to service? Sophomore Kristina Kasfy said, "It was really freezing but overall it was amazing. It was fun helping while cheering the runners on." Even Keppel athletes competing were also able to take the time out of their busy schedules to volunteer. Sophomore and competitor Jackie Duong noted, “It was a bit of nerve wracking event but was pretty fun to watch others compete. This event helped others know what track is about." Senior Amber Ho remarks, "When I saw that Key Club was offering volunteering to help at the track & field meet, I jumped at the opportunity. I would be able to help while seeing my old friends and the service would be so close!" While Amber Ho "jumped at the opportunity", athletes literally jumped... in the long jump event that is. Volunteers helping out with the long jump event recorded scores, measured distances, and prepared the sand pit between jumps. Whether or not we won or lost, this service was definitely exciting and unforgettable.

Relay For Life It’s very often that I have a good time at key club events because of the people I was able to meet and the happiness I saw in the walkers there. Relay for Life was a great event; watching them walk the laps, as a community of survivors and caretakers was something I really enjoyed seeing. As I walked with everyone, I felt a sense of pride while doing so. I also liked the fact that I was able to learn a few skills while working with other members of D10S. Raising money for people who dealt and currently facing this disease and being able to watch them enjoy themselves will definitely bring me back to this event later in the future. Rosemead Relay for Life was the first I attended and I had a great time. I learned how to make ribbons for different awareness and since I love crafting and working hands on things, I really enjoyed it. Although it did rain and we couldn't stay until the end I had to say I would go to another Relay for Life because it was a great experience seeing new people walking around the track and buying the ribbons we made. April DCM

April DCM included activities and snacks were leaded by our new LTG, Kenny Yeung! We started off with our usual conference meeting with the entire division. Pizza was served as food for the division to fill up before we continued to our games! One game was the "Quiet Birthday Game". You were to line up in order, without speaking, and staying on the blue tape with only your foot. Winner got stickers! After the game ended, Kenny informed us on reaching for your goals, no matter how many conflicts you may face. You may get blocked, or fall off, but if you set your mind to your goal, you can achieve it! Vicky Chang Historian, Rosemead

San Gabriel’s Featured Member of the Month Key Clubbers have a certain zeal for spirit, service, and dedication; senior Amy Giang is no exception. With 76.5 service hours simply in a one year term, Giang has shown herself to be an exemplary member of San Gabriel High School’s Key Club. Giang joined Key Club her freshman year alongside her friends, led by an interest in the club’s international membership. Despite having little knowledge as to what Key Club was, she became a member and soon learned about the many programs and services the club advocated for. In the four years of her membership, Giang attended many events and provided her service through a variety of ways, whether it be through serving pancakes, helping the homeless, or motivating exhausted runners. “Through Key Club, I was able to volunteer for those who needed it. I could offer my help and get things done,” Giang said. “Whether it was simply cheering people on at walks or serving the homeless, I knew I would somehow be helping others.” For Giang, Key Club became more than a high school service club. During her senior year, she ran for a cabinet position and served as part of the club’s 2014-2015 Service Chair. Her experiences as both member and cabinet taught her new skills and ultimately served as big influences for her decision to enter the medical field in college. “[The club] gave me the opportunity to become a leader. My communication skills have gotten better, and I can now easily start a conversation with another,” Giang said. “[In addition], Key Club helped me discover that I love helping others and that I have a purpose. [Now], my goal is to give the disadvantaged an advantage.” Though her high school career is over, Amy’s story is one that shows the inspiration she found within Key Club, an inspiration that is undoubtedly shared by other dedicated members like herself.
