Region Picnic

On June 20th, 2015, various Key Clubbers attended the annual Region 13 Picnic. The picnic consisted of food, games and spirit! First, a scavenger hunt was held. Then, a game of ‘Jukebox’ was held. For those who don’t know, the game of Jukebox is pretty simple to play. You are assigned to a group and a person says to sing a song using a specific word. For this case, my group had to sing a song using the term, ‘Me’ But there is a catch to the game, you may not use the same song as the other group. Secondly, there was a spirit session which other Key Clubbers showed their division spirit on that day. I found my first picnic very fun because getting asked how you feel is great and also you meet various people outside the division and it gives you an aspect on how are other divisions are similar or different from your division. What did you think of region picnic? This year's Region Picnic was a great opportunity for our club to fundraise and reach out to others within the region. Although I spent the majority of my time at my club's booth, it was amazing to see all of the energy and enthusiasm of all of the key clubbers there, even in that terrible heat. With all the spirited and energetic members of different divisions together, it was easy to make new friends and catch up with old ones too. The awesome people, booths, and cheers all made the event special. Benjamin Gee The region picnic was a really fun experience for me; I got to meet lots of new people, participate in the games, buy merchandise, and bond with some people from our division and other divisions. It was my first time going to a region picnic, but it was a very enjoyable event and I'm looking forward to the next one! My favorite part of the picnic would probably be playing games with everyone because during the games I was able to interact with lots of people from other divisions. Tori Takai General Member

I had a wonderful and fantastic time at region picnic. I was glad I got to get closer with my division and had the chance to meet new people from other divisions. It was fun bonding with my team during the scavenger hunt. I loved screaming my lungs out during our cheers and I loved spirit battling against the other divisions. I enjoyed the water balloon fight and I was able to take plenty of pictures with my fellow turtles. Overall, this has been one of the best experiences I have had in key club. Eagle scout project On June 13, Key Clubbers assisted Troop 266 Lucky Baldwin Boy Scouts in their Eagle Scout Project at Baldwin Stocker Elementary School. For six hours, Key Clubbers helped the Boy Scouts beautify the school garden by replacing the rotten wooden planks along the perimeter of plants, trimming hedges, pruning plants, painting signs, and clearing out trash and leaves. It was a busy day for the members, but after a dumpster and ten trash bags had been completely filled with leaves, the garden was completely transformed. Brian Chen, Publicity Manager for Gabrielino Key Club, tells the officer board, “ It felt good helping out fellow Boy Scouts.” Having been a Boy Scout himself once, Brian states that he “personally loves coming to Eagle Scout projects to help because [it] is...one of the most important requirements [in] becoming an Eagle Scout.” At the end of the day, the Lucky Baldwin Boy Scouts thanked Key Clubbers for their assistance in the Eagle Scout Project. The project was a great success and seeing the change in the garden was a rewarding experience for the Key Clubbers of Gabrielino High. Andrea Widanta Historian, Gabrielino

Monterey Park Beautification day

For years, California has been battling a long term quandary, the infamous drought. It may not be a malevolent murderer on the loose, but it is nonetheless, no laughing matter. To combat the drought, key clubbers from Mark Keppel High School volunteered in the Monterey Park Community Beautification Day at Edison Trails Park on June 20th. Volunteers helped plant drought tolerant herbs, spread seeds, and shovel mulch along the trail and trees. Not only were we able to beautify our local community but, we were lucky enough to be joined by local councilmen and firefighters. Zhuo Zhou remarks, “My favorite part of the event was that I was able to help out to make the city look better! Thank you Key club for giving me this opportunity because I really enjoyed [it]!” Sally Duong Historian, Mark Keppel

Graduation Ceremony

From the first day of freshmen year, to the last day being a senior. Graduation is a key point in beginning a new chapter in life. On June 11, 2015 Rosemead high school had their graduation ceremony. Rosemead Key Club hosted a graduation flower sale to those who were interested in purchasing more than what they had brought to the ceremony for their loved ones. Before the ceremony began, volunteers split into groups to pass out programs to families waiting in line to take their seats. As they took their seats, other members went out with flowers to sell to interested costumers. We sold a variety of flowers, such as red roses and purple/violet leis. It was a hot day, but our members enjoyed spending their last few moments as freshmen, sophomores, or juniors helping out our club! Their contribution allowed us generate profit for our club which would allow us to pay for future causes, events, or apparel. The Rosemead Key Club cabinet and Mr. Quick would like to thank all of those who came to help and put in all their efforts in helping us succeed. Vicky Chang Historian, Rosemead

San Gabriel Featured Member With a camera in one hand and his spirit in another, incoming senior and two-year Key Clubber William Tea never fails to fulfill his role as an active and passionate member of San Gabriel High School’s Key Club. Following his friends, Tea joined Key Club his sophomore year, initially with the intention of “just being in a service club.” However, after a year of membership, what was originally simply a service club soon became more for him. Through Key Club and the experiences he made at services, Fall Rally, and the District Convention (DCON), Tea was able to not only help out others but discover more about himself as well. After seeing photos of DCON in 2014, Tea began bringing his camera to local services and taking photos of his fellow turtles for fun. “Key Club helped me discover my passion for photography,” Tea said. “I enjoyed taking pictures of people and seeing their spirited, funny, and silly [faces].” Having attended many services and major Key Club events, Tea describes Key Club as outlet for experiences beyond simply providing service to others.“There is [also] the joy of seeing others smile when you are encouraging them or helping them out,” Tea said. When asked what his favorite service was, Tea responded with the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast. “I was able to see the happy faces of people as I [served them food],” Tea said. The incoming 2015-2016 school year will mark the end of Tea’s high school career and membership in Key Club; however, such an end will not stop the joy Tea has for helping others and his newfound passion for photography.
