On July 20th, 2013, Division 10 South had a car wash fundraiser for the Pediatric Trauma Program. To instill an air of friendly competition and at the same time double our chances of raising money, Lieutenant Governor Jason Basulto split the schools of our division into two teams. They were situated in the parking lots of two fast food locations: Carl’s Junior on Valley and Jim’s Burgers on San Gabriel Blvd. Carl’s Junior had much more manpower (and woman power?), with twice as many Key Clubbers at that location that the other. However, the advantage proved to be just a number as the team at Jim’s Burgers won the battle with $90 more in donations. The car wash was a great success. Division 10 South pulled in $550 that day, increasing our PTP balance by fifty percent.
I was very excited to once again raise money for PTP. I had never been to a car wash fundraiser before so I was optimistic. When I got there I already knew it would be getting hot soon. I met up with all my friends and then we started washing our first car. I felt like people weren’t trying as hard as I was because I could always see many water spots left over after we washed them. I also saw that the people assigned to advertising were not doing a great job at getting cars to come in. Overall the car wash was not as fun as I expected it to be, but at least I got to spend time with my friends and fellow key clubbers. Mark Keppel Carl’s Junior Location

The division carwash was really fun! I was stationed at the Jim’s Burgers location. At first it started off slow, but then after our advertisers went to work, the cars just kept coming! It was also a great opportunity to meet new people from the division.
Washing cars was tiring after a while but we were all motivated to win the competition between the two car washes. After a long day of washing cars we learned that we won! It felt great knowing that we had raised all that money for PTP. Although our location in San Gabriel felt a bit empty, we worked tremendously well together as a team and I couldn’t have been prouder. Everyone pitched in as much effort as they could and finished efficiently and accordingly. Though our parking lot was busy with cars at times, there were moments where we were able to share a few laughs together and we all were determined to raise more money than the other team. All in all, this car wash was a huge success to me because it not only raised over $300 but it showed me the true spirit of teamwork and how much teamwork means to Key Club. At night, a family-friendly 5K event on July 27th was hosted at the Pomona Fairplex called the Neon Splash Dash. Around the Fairplex were checkpoints called Glow Zones. Racers ran or danced past these checkpoints as volunteers splashed them with Glow Water, which lit up under the blacklights around the venue. All participants began by wearing white shirts and finished the race drenched in neon colors. The fun did not end there! The After Glow Party occurred afterwards with DJs playing songs from the 80’s to today’s top hits and dance crews performing in a festival of lights and effects. As volunteers, Bosco Tech and San Gabriel Mission separated into different groups at the beginning and end of the 5K course, took pictures of people under black lights, blew up beach balls, and sprayed people with Glow Water. On August 3rd our members helped at the L.A Food Bank, an organization that helps distribute food to those in need. At this occasion, we helped package red peppers into boxes. We picked through large cardboard containers over 3 feet tall in search for peppers good enough for consumption. Then, we packed those unspoiled peppers into boxes to be shipped for distribution. Many of our members enjoyed helping out at the L.A Food Bank, and we will surely be back soon. Eli Canseco Montebello Historian

On August 10, I attended the Region 13 Beach Clean Up. First, we started off with some ice breakers to get to know Key Clubbers from different divisions. It was weird and awkward at times, but I was able to meet new faces and create more memories. After the ice breakers and group picture, we set to cleaning up the beach. Surprisingly, there wasn’t much trash around , so we finished cleaning earlier than expected and spent the rest of the day bonding and having fun. Overall, the beach clean up was an amazing experience and a great way to get to know your fellow keyclubbers! Qi Yang Schurr Junior Representative

I, along with a few members from my club, attended a hiking social hosted by Mark Keppel Key Club on August 18. It was nerve-wracking watching all the people jump off the cliff into the water, but it was cool seeing how everyone there supported each other. I wish I knew how to swim so I could’ve done it too. The trail we took was fun, but I had to keep my head down and watch my step because it got slippery at times. It was physically challenging and the heat started wearing down on all of us on the way back. However, I’m proud to have experienced the hike, especially with my fellow blue turtles. On Saturday, July 20, 2013 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, Gabrielino’s Key Club volunteered at the San Gabriel Library for the Hobbit Scrapbooking Adventure. The volunteers were in charge of the supplies table for the scrapbook event. It was a great event because we got to work with people from other schools. During the event, the kids made scrapbooks and also took pictures with a Hobbit themed background. This event was very significant because the scrapbook event was based on the book The Hobbit to support the project “One City, One Book, One Read”. We always look forward to services at the San Gabriel Library because it’s filled with various events and excitement. Joyce Yu Gabrielino President
On August 3rd, from 9PM-1AM, Rosemead’s most dedicated Key Clubbers braved the smell of stinky tofu and volunteered at the 626 Night Market. A very popular event among Generation Y in Southern California, the Night Market boasts cult-followed food trucks, music, and Asian -American culture. The grounds of Santa Anita Park were bustling with people on Saturday Night--high schoolers tittering between themselves over Jason Chen on the stage, college students home for the summer, and older parents being dragged from food truck to food truck by their adolescent children.
