Pediatric Trauma Program

PTP‌ that one acronym you hear so often but never quite know what it is. No problem because we will sum it up! Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) was established by the Kiwanis CNH Foundation in 1994 after noticing that pediatric trauma, unintentional injury, was the leading cause of death of children in the United States. To combat this, PTP works to prevent pediatric trauma by educating and training the public. Community outreach programs, vital pediatric medical equipment, and funding for research are just some of the ways PTP helps out. So how can you get involved? Fundraise or hold an informational campaign! Fundraising helps with the continuation of PTP and allows it to further spread their campaign. Holding informational campaigns will educate the public about child safety and prevent unintentional injuries.

!

Fun Fact: Since 2004, the Kiwanis Cali-Nev-Ha Foundation has pledged $590,000 for pediatric trauma training.

Nisei Week On Sunday, August 16, the members had a busy schedule ahead of them despite the warm weather condition. Starting the day off with the Sharetea fundraiser hosted by the division, Schurr Key Clubbers attended the fundraiser to help support and raise money for division funds. After the fundraiser, the members appeared at the DCM right before volunteering in Little Tokyo for Nisei Week. The members volunteering at the event were put into groups and received specific tasks, such as guarding the floats and keeping bystanders away from the construction site to ensure their safety. During their break, the key clubbers were allowed to roam around Little Tokyo and enjoy their dinner before going back to work. After a long day of service, the members felt content in their work and the event was successful. Schurr President Stella Baik would like to thank the members that came out to the event, “To many of the festival goers, the float was an touching view. However, to me, seeing the members working hard was more than that. Thank you Schurr High School Key Club for that giving spirit of yours.’

August DCM What better way to beat the heat, than to go to August DCM! On August 16, 2015 Rosemead Key Club attended in the August DCM. During this month’s DCM, our secretary Kelly Lien delivered the news and updates on our club. After the rest of the club officers deliver their monthly updates, we of course continue on with birthday wishes to all the August babies! Later on the afternoon, fun games such as Egg Race and Watermelon Eating Contest were played to help cool everyone off from the heat! Members such as Samantha Voong participated in the Egg Race while another member such as Jenny Koug participated in cheering and getting people going during the Egg Race and the Watermelon Eating Contest! The event was promised ice cream and popsicles, and everyone got them to end off another amazing fun-filled DCM!

Relay for Life This August, Key Clubbers participated in the Relay for Life service at Jefferson Middle School in San Gabriel. Key Clubbers were asked to help set up for the event by hanging up posters and banners around the blacktop of the “track” for the relay and prepare snacks and cold water for the participants. As the participants were arriving, Key Clubbers were asked to decorate and color paper bags for cancer survivors and their families. The event was initiated by a brief speech and ceremoney, and cancer survivors started the relay smiling with their medals. Once they finished their lap, families, firefighters, police officers jogged their lap around the track. Key Clubbers remained on the sidelines handing out water bottles and snacks to the runners and cheering them on. The Key Clubbers were then asked to join the relay to show support for the survivors, which the members responded with showing their spirit and proudly shouting the key club cheers. Immediately following the relay, members and participants line danced together to mark the end of the event. While only a handful of members were able to come to the service due to the scorching hot weather, those who did were lucky enough to showcase the core values of character building and inclusiveness Key Club stands for and their effervescent spirit.
