FALL RALLY 2013
Division 10 South (D10S) retained their championship of the annual Key Club Fall Rally on Nov. 9 at Six Flags Magic Mountain. The division, consisting of 11 high schools from Southern California, including San Gabriel High School, defeated nine other divisions from California, Nevada, and Hawaii (CNH). Lieutenant Governor Jason Basulto from Schurr High School conducted the division at the rally. Street Team spent weeks composing the cheers, organizing practice sessions for the division, and helping Basulto orchestrate the division to victory. The CNH District hosts two annual Fall Rallies in Northern and Southern California to celebrate service and fundraise for the Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). Before the spirit competition, the 10 divisions had an auction in which divisions used their budgets, fundraised for PTP, to buy division lieutenant governors. The auc tion not only allows divisions to donate their fundraised money to PTP through an interactive and competitive event, but also allows the divisions to showcase how much money they fundraised relative to other divisions. All divisions attempted to purchase their own lieutenant governors, but some powerhouse divisions with larger budgets outcompeted smaller ones. The actual spirit competition took place in the Golden Bear Theatre; D10S was
assigned to compete in the third session out of the four at 2 p.m.. The division, along with four others, advanced to the second round by displaying spirit of roaring and clapping. In round two, the five qualified divisions each showcased their first cheer. D10S, Division 15 (D15), and Division 35 East (D35E) were the three divisions that qualified for the third and final round. While D15 had a successful first cheer that carried them to the final round, their second cheer fell behind that of D10S...Ultimately, the CNH district cabinet awarded the Spirit Stick to D10S. The spirit sessions [at Almansor Park and San Gabriel High School] were both really fun, which made the cheers easy to learn. Fall Rally represented the culmination of the service and spirit that I have developed over the past year as a Key Club member. I have never felt as connected with the division as I did at Fall Rally. The unique togetherness and camaraderie that I felt with other members was something that I will always cherish. Winning the spirit stick for the second time in a row was so worth losing my voice over, and the jubilation that ensued made me feel proud to be a blue turtle. Jimmy Chen Schurr Vice President Fall Rally was so awesome! I’m really glad I attended. I had an amazing time with all my friends and got to meet many new fellow key clubbers. When we were arriving at Six Flags I was a bit nervous for the rally and also scared because of the roller coasters, but I was also really excited. When we got there everyone was so spirited and nice. The atmosphere created from all the spirit everyone had was just so amazing. The fact that we won the Spirit Stick two years in a row made it even better! We all did an amazing job! I’m really proud of us! When I heard the words, “Your 2013 Fall Rally Spirit Stick winner is...” I was extremely nervous and scared. That little pause before announcing who the winner was seemed like an eternity. I knew we had done an excellent job on our cheers but I was still not sure if we would win or not. Then when I heard, “Division 10 South!” I started screaming at the top of my lungs. We had won! Everyone was so happy. We were all screaming out of joy. I couldnot believe it, we had won, two years in a row! The day did not end after that though. While waiting in line for the roller coasters or even while walking around we constantly got asked, “How do you
feel?” or we had little spirit battles with other divisions. I remember last year, my first year at Fall Rally and in Key Club, I was really shy when people asked me how I felt. This year I screamed my lungs out with no care in the world. I actually like it when people ask me how I feel now. The day overall was just perfect. Even the bus ride back was fun! My friend and I had a little party in the back of the bus dancing to songs; celebrating our victory at Fall Rally. Diana Laureano Montebello Member [My first] Fall Rally was at first just a trip to Six Flags with my friends: however, after experience the spirit sessions and seeing how united and excited everyone else was, that enthusiasm caught on to me and drenched me like a tidal wave. This year I joined Street team to help create and teach the cheers, and I had a lot of fun! It felt so rewarding seeing how so many members were as excited as I was and so committed to community service. Seeing the hundreds and thousands of members celebrate all the money they’ve raised for PTP and for a greater cause brings hope in me that this world is not a lonely place and that we are not alone--Key Club is one Ohana, where no one gets left behind. Tracy Lee Rosemead President/Street Team Member Being a senior, this was my last Fall Rally, but it was absolutely unforgettable. From the heated spirit battles with the white tigers, foxes, huskies, and bunnies to the curses of annoyed Six Flag attendees who weren’t Key Clubbers, everything filled me with a sense of joy and amusement. To be able to stand at the front of the bleach-
ers and lead the division throughout the Spirit Session was definitely terrifying and hectic, but it was also exhilarating and rewarding. Throughout the session, I remember seeing Blue Turtles swimming side to side, jumping up and down, and screaming not to drop that turtle shell. By the end, we left the building with a bang as Jason proudly held up the Spirit Stick. Calvin Ha Rosemead Secretary Fall Rally 2013 was an experience like no other. Being on the other side of the crowd, able to lead and cheer along side my division, was the best thing i could ever ask for. To see their enthusiastic and very spirited faces, warmed my heart. It lets me know that the lovely members of division 10 south, will be in great hands when i and my fellow leaders graduate. Winning the spirit stick and hearing us roar in stadium, has never left me feeling so proud to say that i am honored to help lead and serve such wonderful members. I know that with a memory like this one, there will be many more great memories made with key clubbers to come as our year comes to a close in a few months. Bosco Tech’s Key Club presented at its school’s club fair with lots of information about this organization and PTP on November 8. We sold boba milk tea to gain attraction to our booth, which worked really well! Board members emphasized our service projects among various schools in our division, the importance of creating friendships, improvements in leadership, communication, and confidence skills, and the appreciation our Key Club members receive when assisting communities. The majority of our audience were freshmen, who mostly requested club memberships. Bosco Tech will definitely have a dedicated, enthusiastic, and helpful club in the upcoming years. Ten Ren Fundraiser
On November 26 I attended the fundraiser at Ten Ren. I have been going to the past DCMs and I didn’t really feel I needed function points, but I wanted to support my Key Club. I expected there to be a lot of Key Clubbers, but instead there was just a lot of non-Key Clubbers. I ordered a honeydew teaser and beef wraps because I brought along two nonKey friends. I signed in and logged my number of guests. I was lucky I brought them because I did not really know anyone else there. We finished eating then hung around Atlantic Times Square. Fall Rally Spirit Training Session
I missed the first fall rally spirit session, but I was glad I was able to go to this one! There was a lot of people there and even a long line to sign in! We could not sign everyone in before our ice breaker, but we were able too when we took a snack break from cheering. Our first attempt at an ice breaker was very funny. We tried to play “More Pancakes Please”, [but] people did not get how to play so we ended up not playing. Next, we tried to attempt dodgeball with these very small, lightweight balls. I could barely throw them. This game took a while because we had so much people there. Then we got to working on learning our cheers for fall rally. The cheers were very catchy and easy to learn. When we were halfway done with cheering we took a break and ate fried chicken and chips. The session was going to end soon, but we learned the side cheers, took a picture, and went home tired. Awake-A-Thon The Awake-A-Thon at Montebello High School
was a PTP Fundraiser that was to be from 9:00 P.M to 7:00 A.M. during the event there was a small dodge ball tournament to start things off around 11 after everyone had settled in and were ready to participate. At about 2 A.M. in order to wake up the crowd everyone who attended where taught the cheers by board members Nick Tran, Diana Laureano, Jesse Hernandez, and street team member Sayra Escobar. It took about one hour for everyone to be able to perform the cheer without help from anyone else. After the small cheering session there was either dancing or playing of board games along with some more dodge ball or basketball. Towards the end everyone was tired and exhausted but really happy.In my opinion I enjoyed myself and so did many of the other students that attended as they told me the Monday after. LA Turkey Trot
On Thanksgiving, November 28, Rosemead Key Club volunteered at the Los Angeles Turkey Trot. Sponsored by the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, the Turkey Trot is a 5k/10k event. Participants are encouraged to bring canned foods and other non -perishables to donate to the Food Bank, so that families in need won’t go hungry on Thanksgiving. Our volunteer group, which consisted of Key Clubbers from Rosemead, Mark Keppel, and other schools from D10S, did various jobs such as manning the late registration booth, passing out bibs, cutting off time tags, and handing out snacks to the runners. It was a great experience to see so many people coming together to run on Thanksgiving morning! Genie Hong Rosemead Historian
