LONGO TOYOTA On August 18th, many Rosemead Key Clubbers were excited to volunteer at the Longo Toyota Fundraiser. Established 1967 in El Monte by Dominic Longo, Longo Toyota soon b e c a m e t h e n u m b e r o n e d e a l e rship in the nation by selling 469 new and old vehicles. Ever since then, the company still holds its number one rank throughout the nation! Key Clubbers were assigned a specific job alone as well as in pairs. Jobs included greeting customers

with big smiles, guiding them to their correct lane, serving donuts and coffee to those in line, and removing unnecessary staples from paperwork. Vice President Tyler Au expressed his enjoyment of the event. “It was a good learning experience on how to be business and socially savvy, Au said. At the end of the day, Longo Toyota thanked Rosemead Key Clubbers for their hard work and donated $500 towards Rosemead Key Club.

MARK KEPPEL CLUB FAIR As Keppel slowly eased into their new school year, finally came Club Rush. Many of the board members had anticipated for this two week event to be able to represent Key and wear their coolest turtle gear. Keppel held their Club Rush booth on September 1. On that day, board members rushed to Mark Keppel Key Club’s assigned booth right after class. Students set up with signs and a trifold about Key Club; in addition, they handed out applications. Adrenaline rushed as

many returning and new members came by. Another group went out to nearby lunch tables to give out applications to those interested in joining. The quad was chaotic as students crowded to sign up for clubs. For board members, seeing newcomers pass by with questions, smiles, and great attitudes was a wonderful sight. Mark Keppel Key Club hopes that this new term will achieve higher than the previous and serve the community well.

chromebook service School has just started at Gabrielino High, but Key Club is already ahead of the game. To keep with the theme of helping our school community, the first service of the school year was helping teachers label and organize the new chromebooks for each classroom. The service took place over the course of a few days from Aug. 24-26. Students met after-school at the tech room, where they assisted in organizing and labeling the chromebooks in order by their barcodes. In addition, members labeled the carts where the laptops would go and placed the chromebooks back into their respective spots. In addition to labeling the school’s new devices, members helped various teachers set up their classrooms by putting up decorations and organizing books or papers. August was a month of adjustment and beginnings for many—Key Club was able to help Gabrielino’s staff and consequently

gain a greater presence at our school. That said, Gabrielino hit a milestone this month when 24 of members went to D10S’s DCM! Gabrielino Key Club hopes to ensure that members make a greater impact in school as well as the Key Club community.

TANABATA FESTIVAL In August, Schurrtles spent their last summer days in Little Tokyo setting up and running the Tanabata Festival. An annual festival that is held in Little Tokyo, this year will be the Tanabata Festival’s eighth year. It celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi. There were vendors selling food, an ongoing performance show, and the highlight—the Kazari Contest. Schurrtles set up the festival and assisted festival managers. For setup, Schurrtles put up 20-30 canopies, arranged them in order, and placed signs help different vendors and attendees navigate the festival. Festival workers were assigned different tasks, such as directing people, informing them about the festival, and passing out water.

SGHS’S NEW SCHOOL YEAR With the year just starting, the first couple club meetings can be hectic. However, as San Gabriel High School’s Sergeant-at-Arms (S.A.A.), junior Melanie Van keeps her cool. “When I begin the meetings, I feel very nervous because I’m scared of messing up.” Van said. However, Van says by having the other officers by her side, it’s not as scary. “[They’re] all my friends, so it makes the environment more comfortable for me.” With Van’s connections with fellow officers, meetings are a breeze. As a newcomer not only to Key

Club, but as well as San Gabriel High School, freshman Dale Ly has high hopes “I’m looking forward to making new friends and experiencing new things [while] doing events.” Ly said. Ly wants to make more connections like the ones that many Key Club members, as well as officers, show. “I find the bond between the [officers] and members very strong.” Through Key Club, Ly hopes to make strong connections like the ones already present in the club.
