Monthly Club Report Kirstin Le cheers on runners who were attending The Wipeout Run to keep having fun.

Andrew Hill

Wipe Out Run This year’s Wipe Out run was definitely worth waking up early for and a memorable volunteer event. I was scheduled for the 10 A.M. shift with a friend. Once we got there, we checked in and got our volunteer shirts, snacks, and drawstring backpacks. At the same time, Truong Xe was also checking in and decided on sticking with us. We were placed in the bag check station but they already had so many people so we moved onto a water station where we met some volunteers from Yerba Buena! They were all so friendly and funny. I accidentally placed my phone in one of their drawstring backpacks and sadly, they left early. But later on that week, we were able to meet up. They were very kind about it and kept my phone safe. I guess that's what made the event memorable. During the event, I had a really fun time. We played games that Truong taught us while filling up cups with water for the people. We were dancing around, cheering on the runners, and getting to know each other better too. Volunteer events aren't just a way to give back to the community. It's also a way to make new friends, bond, and create new experiences. Kirstin Le Member

Boba Festival During the Boba Festival, we helped in various areas. First, we were assigned to decorating the photo booth. Next, we travelled around the SJSU campus tying balloons to poles and advertising for the festival. Then, we helped vendors carry their boba supplies to the ballroom. Lastly, we were lucky enough to work directly with some of the vendors and establish connections with great businesses. We learned a lot about the boba business such as the actual boba and owning an actual business. All of the vendors were very generous in letting us sample their products after helping them in preparing cups and boba. Overall, it was a great and exciting event filled with great social opportunities and amazing boba. Kayla Torres Member

Ann Sobrato Bacon Festival Bacon lovers united at the bacon festival in downtown San Jose to start off September. The kids were dancing to the music in the water of the park. There were pretend wrestlers to entertain all ages. The festival included games for the children. The amount of food trucks was unbelieveable. I definitely recommend volunteering for this event next year! Linsey Keo Member

Commercial St. Inn Painting My time at Commercial St. Inn was fun, effective, and a bit messy. When we got there, we first set up the tarp and tape so paint wouldn't get everywhere, this was the most difficult part. After we were all prepared we started actually painting. It was pretty fun painting, but at the same time talking to friends and meeting new people. Afterwards we had spilled a lot of paint on the floor so we scrubbed it off for quite a while. Overall this event was really enjoyable and if I had the opportunity to do it again, I definitely would! Gurmin Johal Member

Gunderson Wipe Out Run Overall it was a very enjoyable event. Since I went with my friends, we had an absolute blast while volunteering for the course. Sadly, there were a couple incidents because of injuries, but that is to be expected if you're going to be volunteering at an event, which has obstacle courses. 10/10 I would do it again. Jazz Fest Despite the various complications and rude supervisors that we ran into, I'm proud to say that Leland Key Club kept an optimistic attitude throughout the whole event! The members showed plenty of teamwork and it was a great experience to have, really allowing the others and I to bond and get to know each other more thoroughly! Katie Chen Project Coordinator

Leland Leland Interkey Charity Dinner Hosting a charity dinner was something that Leland Key Club never imagined having before. We were all so excited and eager to impress our division since it was our first every dinner, but with beginner’s luck, we ran into numerous problems. When the board began planning the charity dinner, we never took into account all the problems that would come our way. We had problems ranging to venue mishaps to not enough masking tape to hang our backdrop. The whole thing seemed like it was a mess, but once the show began and people were seated, everything fell perfectly in place. Although our first dinner had a crazy amount of problems, all those problems helped us to understand the true meaning of the power of teamwork. We helped each other and took initiative when someone was not able to perform a task. We showed dedication and commitment even though we had feelings of doubt about the overall success. Without my board, our first charity dinner would have never been possible. Vicky Nguyyen Vice-President

Rose Deheading The rose deheading event was really fun. It was a small event and not many people went, but I really had fun. I felt like I was helping our own local community a lot by cleaning up the roses. They told us to cut off the roses that were beginning to wilt and put those onto a tarp to throw away. When we left, the park looked gorgeous. Everyone there was also so nice and helpful. I had a great time! Hoaian Dang Treasurer

Oak Grove Large Health Fair The flea market was really big so there was a big venue for the fair. I got introduced to Jesse, who was part of the America Diabetics Association. and she assigned me a couple of jobs. The first thing I did was set up these big signs. Then I carried food for the volunteers. I then got assigned to a booth with pre-diabetic info with a test. I got informed more about diabetes, and it was interesting trying to spread that info to other people. Some appreciated the pre-diabetic test while others didn't want to know. It was overall a new experience that I would enjoy doing again. Sharon Quach Member

Wipe Out Run This month I did many events including Wipeout Run Froyo Run, and went to my first DCM. I learned the value of helping runners and being able to be there on time. It was a great experience, and I want to continue doing these events! Darrell Tran Member

Santa Teresa Italian Family Festa The Italian Family Festa was a very successful event! The people in charge were so generous and cheerful, making volunteering fly by. It was refreshing seeing so much culture in one spot, and how all the staff and attendees were so happy and festive. I'm definitely looking forward to next year! Angelique Ngo Senior Representative

National Night Out National Night Out was a very fun event as you get to interact with your members and the people who ran the event. As a volunteer, you would either pass out food, deliver food, or would watch over kid games. Though it sounds boring, it actually is pretty fun as you will have plenty of people to talk to while helping, you get to witness the participants' happiness, and eat a free lunch. Kevin La Member

Silver Creek Coyote Creek Clean Up The Coyote Creek Clean Up was a volunteer event to remember. We found so many weird things when we were cleaning up and it was very surprising to see how much trash piles up down in the creeks. I was able to meet many other Key Clubbers as well, so it made the experience even more enjoyable! The volunteers who took time out of their day to finish the task were so passionate and it makes me want to volunteer with them every time they hold an event! Overall, it was just amazing. Vivian Pham Co-Commissioner

Playa Del Rey Carnival The most memorable event that I have attended is the Playa del Rey Carnival. On, August 4th, Willow Glen Key Clubbers got together to volunteer their time for a neighborhood carnival. We helped do various things such as serve food or manage the game booths. The sole purpose of the event was to allow families and especially children enjoy a period of fun and relaxation. I remember smelling the sweet scent of cotton candy while waiting for people to arrive. As parents and their children began to arrive everyone went into their assigned positions. Seeing the glow in the children's eyes and hearing the joy in their laugh as they all scattered to play at different booths, filled me with so much happiness that I wished I could go back in time when I was a sweet, innocent child for just a second. As the sun came down, many more families arrived. After a charming afternoon, we were all exhausted and satisfied of the outcome of a great event. The priceless moments that Key Clubbers share together unite us all into one big family. The experiences offered are definitely rewarding. It is moments like this where I am reminded of passion to serve. Sonia Quintero member
