Hello Supervillains!
Welcome
Can you believe summer is already over? I hope you all had a wonderful summer and that you are all caught up on your sleep, because it is time to go into Key Club mode! With school in session, communication within your club should be a little bit easier and you should be signing up for more service events. Also, a new school year means a new pool of potential Key Club members! So reach out and recruit others to join because it’s important to continually grow our Ohana and to spread the Key Club love. Participating in club rush day, posting flyers around the school, passing out candy, and walking around with posters are all great member recruitment ideas; but I think that individually talking to someone about Key Club will leave a bigger impact! So good luck to those who are starting school and here’s to another amazing year! -Vicky Le
& Twelve South News Editor, Celine Nguyen Dear Supervillains, We are now getting into that Back-To-School grind, and that means a lot of us are going to get busy soon. Prioritize and tackle one responsibility at a time. Don’t get too stressed out too early in the year! I’m always very grateful when someone reads our newsletters, because there are so many things you can learn about our unique division. If you happen to look through it, please feel free to lend me a hand and tell me how I can improve. If you can tell, I also love using photography as the base. If you like photography and you have some pictures to share, you may send them to me to be considered for the next newsletter! -Celine Nguyen

Planning Ahead September 2014 to May 2015 is a total of eight months left for us to complete our goal of 19,000 hours of service. That means that each month, our Division should collectively complete approximately 1,820 hours! It seems like a lot, but between eleven clubs in our Division, that’s 165 hours each! Let’s all work together and plan ahead so that we can accomplish our goal. Reach for the stars and never go back! Good luck Supervillains, we’re all teammates here in Key Club!
DON’T LOSE STEAM! If there is trouble looking for service events over a busy month during the school year, dedicating your time to fundraising is a great option as well. The Eliminate Project is looking promising, with only $357.97 left until we will have completed our mission. PTP is always looking for contributors as we still have $1,601.50 left to go. We can do it; make it happen!

Andrew Hill Key Club Mural Our club decided to repaint our Key Club mural at Andrew Hill this summer, from July 9th to 16th, to start off the upcoming year. It was a very fun experience to work with my fellow board members, KC members, and Key Clubbers from other schools, like Santa Teresa and Gunderson. Working on this mural definitely helped us bond and learn to work around different circumstances. We had many technical difficulties due to our lack of preparation for our first painting, but we resolved our problems and the mural turned out great! Being able to finish this mural brought us joy knowing that we all have participated and worked hard for the final result. This mural represents our club, the exciting journeys and demanding challenges that we will face. I am so proud of my club and our determination to work hard for upcoming school year. Big shout-out to everyone, especially our Lt. Governor, Vicky Le, and Key Clubbers from Santa Teresa, who came to help in the early mornings and the burning afternoons, to make this happen! Coyote Creek Cleanup Cleaning up Coyote Creek was an amazing eyeopener for me. I thought that we would be picking up small wrappers and pieces of paper, which we did, but I didn't expect to find large pieces of plywood, multiple tires, car parts, and even sofa cushions! Although it was hot and the work was rather hard, it did make me reevaluate how I treated the earth and how considerate I was of throwing my trash away properly, especially after seeing how dry and dirty the creek bed was. After seeing the amount of trash we collected (over 60 bags total!), it gave me hope that one day the Coyote Creek would be filled with water, fish, and beauty again.

Summer Jazz Festival First of all the volunteer booth wasn't out at when I got there which was at 7:30 at 10:00 it was there. There were A LOT OF CHAIRS on the grass area but I should everywhere and there were people out there finding a place to place their chairs by the time I got there. Me and two other wonderful ladies straightened and organized chairs in the VIP area and was of course food on the ground from the previous day which I heard was really nice. We also set up tables with umbrellas while we were doing that you could smell good being prepared which smelled AMAZING!!! There were A LOT OF booths out Verizon, stun guns, sunglasses, jewelry, hats, Kaiser, and etc. It got crowed really fast around 10:40 going onto 11 more volunteers started showing up then in the morning shift which is typical but overall I had a blast seeing the festival come to life with color, people and of course the music. It provides project supplies, education kits, and other miscellaneous items such as binders and staplers at heavily discounted prices, assisting teachers in all manners of the classroom and allowing students to achieve their goals. Evergreen Valley Almaden Trail Run

When we arrived at the Almaden Trail Run, we were all put into stations to serve the runners some snacks and beverages that can relieve some exhaustion and quench their thirst. When we set up the booth, we sliced fruits to be ready for the runners and waited. As the runners came, we showed them what we had, and the runners wolfed down everything until they were satisfied. Mt station was at the 6 mile mark, which meant that all the runners that came by were soaked with sweat. I personally loved this event as we also had food for ourselves like M&M’s and soda, and as we waited for more runners my friend and I just hung out and got ready to serve more runners as we blasted music and tanned in the sun. It was a great event, and I would love to come to one again, if it wasn’t too far. Justin Yu Treasurer

Gunderson Salvation army back-to-school The Salvation Army Back-to-School shopping event was definitely a highlight of my summer. All the fatigue from waking up at 5 AM on a Saturday morning disappeared when we all went into action. It was really fun being someone’s unofficial stylist for the day, and to the kids that needed this I could tell it meant and helped a lot. By the end of the day, both the children, volunteers, and parents especially were happy, and overall the event was such a heartwarming experience. Not to mention the kids were absolutely adorable! I’d definitely go again if I had the chance. Huong Le Member

Pioneer Mojo Jojo
Pioneer Leland pie-an-officer This month I attended a pie-an-officer fundraiser hosted by Leland and my home club. We sold spam, lemonade and the chance to pie your favorite officer within the two clubs. I really enjoyed playing icebreaker games with the key clubbers that were attending, as well as meeting a lot of new friends. However, my favorite part of the event would be pieing every officer on the Pioneer board in the face. I am typically not a violent person, but it was very satisfying to pie others and watch them get pied for charity. I hope to attend more fundraisers with my club in the future! Lauren Chang Secretary

26 Salvation army back-to-school On Saturday, August 9th, I helped out at the Salvation Army back pack distribution. It was pretty fun. I met a lot of new people. It was fun learning how to make balloon animals. My finger hurt after tying a lot of balloons though.... Everyone was nice and friendly to each other, and we had a great time. It was fun tying balloons for the kids. Grant Nguyen Member
Salvation army back-to-school August 9th, from 7:30am to 11:30am, we helped Salvation Army tie balloons for kids. I learned a lot from our guide. I learned how to make a balloon sword, crown, and a tommy gun. Since I didn't know how to make a few of the items, I asked the others in my group to help the customer. Everyone was nice and really friendly to all the people there. When it was close to the end, people stopped helping make balloons and we had to rush a bit more to speed things up. Cleaning was a bit rough but it was all right. At the very end, we got hot dogs, which was really nice. Overall I felt that we helped make a lot of kids and adults happy and made there day.

27 Although not having the expected attendance at the DCM, Ann Sobrato Key Club definitely felt like it put together a successful DCM! All of the work days, Walmart/Dollar Tree runs, and video calls were worth the amount of fun that we all had and funds raised towards PTP. As the August DCM host club, Ann Sobrato Key Club would like to thank all of the members that showed up to participate in our Pro-Bending Games, buy Threads of Hope bracelets, and have LOTS of fun with our 12 South Ohana! -

I had a great time at August DCM! It was really interesting to hear everyone present their club reports in the form of a poem. The Pro Bending games were amazing and tons of fun! Each of the games were very well planned and worked out great. This DCM was easily one the most fun ones I have ever attended! Joey Toro, Willow Glen

28 The August DCM hosted by the fellow supervillians of Ann Sobrato was and will be one of the most memorable dcm's I've been too. The Avatar: the Last Airbender themed games were a creative and fun twist to the regular division conference meetings and our amazing LTG, Vicky Le, introduced the key clubbers at the event to an activity called "my key club moment was...", where I was able to show the appreciation I have for my president Kevin Tran on a crumbled piece of paper! Thanks for hosting such a great event fire nation!! #watertribe -

The August DCM (The Fire Nation's Annual Pro Bending games) was so much fun! A friendly competition to win the probending games with my nation was heated up quickly and I loved it. The rainbow drinks were also a fantastic idea, and I loved the signs made for each nation! Thanks to Sobrato Key Club for putting on an enjoyable DCM! -

August DCM was amazing! I really enjoyed it and the games were fun! It was great to meet people and I'm glad I went, especially since our waterbending team won. - Vivian Ha, Silver Creek
The August DCM hosted by Ann Sobrato Key Club was a DCM I could never forget. We were all assigned teams of the 4 elements (Air, Land, Fire, and Water) and played the Pro – bending games. Although I was on the team of the Fire nation, it was scorching hot! Nonetheless, D12S bonded closer together, in a more competitive style. I met new friends, listened to small key club testimonies, and see my LTG be sprayed with sill string! There were a lot of other things that happened in the Avatar themed DCM, Aang I don’t think I could fit them all in here, but I would definitely recommend going next year! -
Justin Yu, Evergreen Valley
Before Key Club entered my life I now can see how absurdly astray I truly was. The epoch of my enlightenment occurred during the August DCM of the year 2014, in which I received my first taste of the ritual "icebreaker." I followed as my fellow enlightened ones took part in these games and felt a novel and awesome happiness. I would now like to take a moment and extol my faithful president, Baolinh, for she is the only reason I embarked on this uplifting journey. I hope I can too rise in the ranks and transform into a powerful Officer one day… until then i will devotedly attend numerous events. -
