LTG'S WELCOME

D-A-N-G-E-R, the villains are no strangers! So clap your hands and stomp your feet, it’s supervillain danger! What’s schemin’ Supervillains?! Thank you to all of those who attended the Region Training Conference last weekend. I hope you all had an exciting time there and maybe even experienced your Key Club Moment! Even though an event as big as RTC has just passed, there’s still SO MUCH to prepare for! It is officially the season for SPIRIT and FUNDRAISING! With Fall Rally North in less than a few weeks, it’s time to fundraise as much as possible for PTP, get your spirit gear ready to deck out, and get our cheers memorized! I've been coordinating with the spirit, fundraising, and service teams to ensure that this fall season is full of amazing events and opportunities, so make sure to mark your calendars and stay updated! Remember, it's also time to represent that 12 South spirit by volunteering at service events! So, continue serving your community while preparing for Fall Rally. I can't wait to see all of you supervillains at the next two FRN Preps and Fall Rally North aiming for the FRN spirit stick!

Leland Key Club aided the organizers in helping the event run smoothly, helping in the passing out of food and goods to attendees along with assisting in vending the goods. We used caring and leadership to make sure the patrons felt welcome and that the other volunteers were able to complete their tasks smoothly and efficiently. In the event we aided the organization "The Italian American Heritage Foundation", which seeks to help celebrate Italian food and culture with the cit of San Jose. To close off with the mood of the event, i had a lot of fun and little went wrong thanks to careful work and awareness of others. It was a good time with good food.

As a volunteer, I helped to allow the event to run smoothly. I set up the venue, guided the attendees, and I worked as an usher, which meant that I could also enjoy the show! Once the show had ended, I took donations, and then cleaned up. As the show took place later (it started at 7), we were expected to stay really late. The only shift was for the entire day, meaning from 1-pm to 1 am! This worked out for me as SJUSD has a break during the first week of August. If you can, I highly recommend this event the next time it comes around to see a united and spirited community, super talented performers, and grateful people all around.

Every year, I look forward to that first volunteering opportunity at a fall harvest festival because it signifies the upcoming fall season. This year, it happened to be the Taylor Elementary Harvest Festival. I absolutely love helping out at this specific event because I've done it for the past 3 years and it was one of the very first volunteering event I attended as a Key Clubber. The overall experience when I first volunteered here was so memorable as I got to help out my community as well as have fun with my friends while doing so. I came back to the festival this year ready and full of excitement. I had signed up for the "Crazy Hair Booth" shift from 6-8pm and got to run the booth with my friends. The eagerness shown on the little kids' faces when walking up to get their hair done was adorable. "I want green hair, I want blue hair", the possibilities were end There were many other fun activities for the festival goers such as bowling or getting your face painted! There were also lots of delicious food and dessert from the food trucks. Everyone, from parents to students to volunteers, got to enjoy the festivity as we all join to celebrate the beginning of the wonderful fall season and the start of a brand new school year.

Last year, I volunteered for the annual Tet Trung Thu Moon Festival at Eastridge. It was so nice to see Vietnamese culture being spread to people of all backgrounds and ethnicities. Especially when it’s my own culture being shared, I get excited. I volunteered at the vendor, Tea Villa. We got to make boba and sell them, and as a boba lover, I couldn’t even express my enthusiasm. This year, I just had to volunteer again, and I helped out at the same vendor. The workers there remembered me and I had the time of my life. I volunteered from day to night that day and I have to admit, it was tiring, but it was worth the experience, twice. I had so much fun being surrounded by all the bustling crowds and liveliness. Even while I was working, I had fun. I would absolutely volunteer again for the Moon Festival and I look forward to the event next year.

Club Rush at my school was extremely fun. We hyped up key club with so many banners and pins that we were the club that outdid everyone ;) It was incredibly successful with tons of incoming freshmen !! I’m hoping that we keep this good streak going.

Club Rush was extremely FUN at my school! This is the last year I am doing this with my fellow officers and I want to keep up that energy forever. It is so fun to see a lot of freshman came to our booth and sign up, asking us “ HOW DO YOU FEEL ?” At the end, I was late to class but it was really memorable.

“

Overall, EVKC's Club Rush was great! All of the officers got dressed in division gear and passed out balloons, stickers, keys, and clothespins to members that signed up. In the end, we had over 300 old and new members! -Phillip Nguyen, EVKC President

Club Rush at Silver Creek was super fantastic! What made us stand out from the other clubs is that all board members from Key Club were decked out in super villain green and gray spirit gear. Each officer was ready to answer the question, “How do you feel? Through out the thirty five minutes we had during lunch, we shouted our replies and occasionally the D12S remix cheer. We had passed out small bubble bottles to the first 90 people who sign up for our club and our executives were having the time the their lives, pouring their villain spirit and shouting to join Key Club. At the end of club rush, we requited almost 300 new and old members combined. For some of us, this was our first club rush, representing Silver Creek Key Club and Division 12 South at our school; having to go through club rush was truly memorable and amazing to experience. Knowing that all of us represent a club that aims to make a positive impact in our communities made our hearts full and we look forward in the future for more opportunities, and to requite more people to join Key Club.

SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE PROGRAM GUIDE | OCTOBER 2018

a message from the service projects committee Hello, CNH Key Club! With summer coming to an end, remember the importance of giving back to your community by remembering the Key Club International and the CNH District’s Major Emphasis -- Children: Their Future, Our Focus -- as well as the service performed by clubs in the California-Nevada-Hawaii District. There are significant ways in which you can promote UNICEF such as participating in Trick-Or-Treat for UNICEF or having donation cans! This guide is designed to give you resources for planning service or fundraising events relating to October’s Spotlight on Service Program initiative: UNICEF! The following pages provide an overview of what “UNICEF” and the Spotlight on Service Program are about. If you have any concerns, please email Service Projects Chair Lily Marshall at cnhkc.sp@gmail.com. Happy Serving, Service Projects Committee

SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE PROGRAM GUIDE | OCTOBER 2018

What is the Spotlight on Service Program? The CNH Spotlight on Service Program was created by the Service Projects Committee to promote International and District initiatives as well as to encourage active participation with organizations and initiatives. Every month, there is a designated theme that all clubs are encouraged to focus their service towards to promote a variety of service projects. Clubs that participate in a specific month’s focus are eligible to submit to the form in order to receive recognition, which can be found under the “Spotlight on Service Program” page under the “Projects” tab on the CNH CyberKey. Pictures can be sent to cnhkc.sp@gmail.com. All submissions are due on the fifth of the following month by 6:00 PM (PST) or 3:00 PM (HST). One or more clubs are featured every month in the District Newsletter in recognition of any outstanding service project.

Overview of “UNICEF” Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to combat maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) worldwide. This historic initiative, called "The Eliminate Project," will protect the lives of babies and mothers all over the globe and will help end this cruel, centuries-old disease. The final push to eliminate MNT requires $110 million and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family. The more than 100 million women, along with their future newborns, who will be protected through global MNT elimination efforts live in areas scarred by poverty, poor medical infrastructure or humanitarian crises. The Eliminate Project will also help pave the way for the delivery of other lifesaving services, such as clean water, nutrition and other vaccines.

Event Fundraiser Ideas CAR WASH Volunteers wash cars as a fundraiser for a preferred charity. The host may choose to charge for the car wash or ask for donations. Contact a location ahead of time to ask if their facility can be used. Then advertise the event to locals using all methods. Split into groups so one group of volunteers guide cars, one group spray and rinse cars, one group scrub cars with soap and one group dry off cars. The leader or host should collect fees or donations.

E-LEMON-ATE STAND

A fun way your club can fundraise for UNICEF is to host a lemonade stand! Donate all proceeds to UNICEF and take this opportunity to raise awareness of MNT. Seek school approval to hold a lemonade stand during or after school. Have members and officers sign up to create and/or serve the lemonade. Make enough lemonade to sell! Save time by buying the powered packets. Promote the stand using posters! Set up your table where people pass by a lot!

Halloween Costume Party

Host a Halloween Themed Social. Have all entrance fee proceeds and snack purchases go to the fundraiser. Start planning by finding a location for the event. Ask for chaperones to attend this event. Delegate planning for decorations and food with your officers. Advertise the event to your club! At the day of the event be sure to have a cash box and a money handling form to collect the money that will be going to the fundraiser!

Service idea HALLOWEEN GROUP Have volunteers go trick-or-treat for UNICEF and split everyone up into three groups to compete for a prize! Split your volunteers into three groups and assign advisors to each group. Set a prize for the group that collects the most money by the end of the night! This could be boba, donuts, etc. Promote staying safe by trick-or-treating in groups and when asking for donations.

TRICK-OR-TREAT FOR UNICEF BY: MIKAELLA MIGUEL, SEGERSTROM KEY CLUB “Early September of 2017, I ordered 2 packs of 25 boxes from the UNICEF website which promptly arrived at the end of the month. Starting October 3rd, our first club meeting of October, boxes were given out to each member. At every meeting, we included a segment during which we reminded and explained the members of the purpose and proper way to collect donations from people. There was a major emphasis on our October 31st meeting, as that day was Halloween itself. We gave incentives to members for each $5 they collected. Amazingly, our club raised and submitted a total of $250 dollars to the UNICEF cause. I believe that all members were excited about this project. Although some were hesitant at first, as asking for money from strangers and explaining the cause may be uncomfortable, members described their overall experiences as "really fun" and "exciting to contribute to such a good cause.
