MESSAGE FROM

YOUR LTG

Hello Super Villains! District Convention is just around the corner! It is nearing the end of our terms as leaders; for those of you who are juniors, sophomores, and freshmen, you still have time left to leave behind your own golden legacy. First, I would like to take the time to congratulate our Lieutenant Governor Elect, Vicky Le! I am confident that she will lead this division to the best of her capabilities and bring this wonderful family to higher heights. I would also like to thank the candidates for having the courage to run – it shows how much each of you have grown as leaders and as Key Club members. Secondly, I would like to remind you all that even though our terms are almost over, there is still time left to make an impact. Do not worry about the time we have left and focus more on the amount of accomplishments that you can make within you club in the time we have left! This is your chance to really push to do your best and to leave behind a foundation for next year’s leaders to build upon. This is your last chance for the 2013-2014 term. I’d like to ask that each of you look deep within you for one last final push. Thirdly, DCON registration has already passed. However, there is still late registration for a slightly higher fee. Do not miss out on this golden opportunity! Find your golden ticket, and I’ll see you at DCON 2014! This is a once-in-a-lifetime (well, four-times-in-a-lifetime) opportunity that will truly change your life. I still remember DCON my freshmen year and I arrived not knowing what to expect. The experience changed my life for the better. I encourage you all to register if you have no already. Lastly, I would like to thank you. Thank you, Supervillains, for inspiring me to do my best as the Lieutenant Governor who serves you. Thank you for giving me a reason to be happy each and every single day of this term. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve all of you leaders. Thank you for motivating me, for supporting me, for working with me to leave behind our golden legacy. You are all truly GOLDEN leaders that will no doubt change the world someday. L-O-V-E I LOVE THIS D-I-V!

February: Children’s Miracle Network March: March of Dimes April: Project with your Kiwanis Club

THE SERVICE INITIATIVE Why participate? Clubs with a certain amount of months of participation may be recognized on screen at DCON 2014. Clubs that submit a project receive an electronic certificate!

How to participate Design a club project for the designated month’s initiative, and then report it on the electronic submission form linked on the CNH CyberKey. Photos of service must be submitted separately to cnhkc.sp@gmail.com! Find more specific information regarding how to submit Spotlight on Service projects by visiting: cnhkeyclub.org/projects/spotlightonservice

What is it? With the Spotlight on Service Program, designed by the Service Project Committee to educate CNH Key Club members about Key Club International and encourage action with different organizations and for different causes, Key Clubs should be focusing on a different service initiative with a service project or two every month. Monthly Initiatives: - February | CMN - March | March of Dimes - April | Kiwanis Club

HOW DOES KEY CLUB HELP? In 2009-10 Key Club and the Kiwanis family raised almost $1.8

Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) is a nonprofit organization that raises money to benefit hospitalized kids while increasing awareness of its member hospitals. All CMN contributions directly benefit hospitals, helping to purchase up-to-date equipment, train staff, conduct lifesaving research, implement outreach programs and provide health care for children whose parents can’t afford to pay.

DID YOU KNOW? More than 170 children's hospitals are affiliated with Children's Miracle Network. Find a CMN Hospital near you and learn about the work they’re doing in your community!

million for Children's Miracle Network and their affiliated hospitals. For more than a decade, Key Club International has been supporting CMN by sponsoring fundraisers and participating in service projects involving CMN children’s hospitals. Key Club members can participate in service projects at their local children's hospital in the following ways:

Provide toys and dolls for kids going through trauma. Contribute to or create video, toy, or book lending libraries or playrooms. Help staff information booths or surgery waiting rooms. Assist families with children who require long-term care or who live great distances from hospitals. Support safety campaigns or parent education programs. Purchase specific pieces of equipment.

sobrato’s park clean up We ended our Key Club Recruitment Week with a park clean up and celebration in honor of our official charter anniversary as a club of Key Club International. Member Andie Koldewyn organized this clean up with the city of Morgan Hill and invited Civics students and other service clubs on campus to participate. At the end, we shared our food from our picnic celebration with everyone and had a wonderful time!

Reflect on your GOALS Activity: Sit with your feet on the line of the box on the floor, write a goal on a card, lay flat on the ground and place it behind your shoulder. Get up, and try to reach your goal without stepping outside the box. What do you think the purpose of this activity is? What is the message?

Division 12 South members said… “Use all your available resources to get to where you want to be!” “You might not be able to reach your goal on your own, so let your friends help you.” “Never give up trying to reach your goals.”

PC: Nimrah Aslam, Ann Sobrato

“It’s easier to reach your goals if you think outside the box.”

WELCOME TO DIVISION 12 SOUTH

LIVE OAK On January 24th, we received news that Live Oak Key Club had been officially chartered in Division 12 South. The news was so exciting, and I was – I am – so glad that our weeks of work to recruit members and all the time we put in to finishing paperwork paid off by our recognition as part of D12S! Joining a division with so much spirit and extensive history is inspiring, especially seeing our few members anxious for events like DCON just as the rest of the Key Clubbers in this ecstatic division. With the chartering of our club, I can’t wait to see our small group grow and prosper even more so. Inspired by the past, I have high hopes for the present, and the coming future. -

Hanh Phan, Live Oak Key Club President

Joining the division was actually exciting for me because I was able to meet new people and help the community with people I love. I wanted to join Key Club because of how nice, dedicated, and loving the members were. I was amazed how some Key Clubbers attempted to keep me company so I wouldn’t feel lonely and excluded at the May DCM as a non-Key Clubber. Before arriving to Sobrato’s May DCM, I was actually expecting some members to give me a hard time but instead they were really friendly and invited me to a random conversation. At some events that I went to, I saw how supportive and loving members are to each other and how some members dedicate a huge amount of time to Key Club to change the community for the better. I realized that I wanted to be a part of something like Key Club. I admire those dedicated and caring individuals and I hope to be like them! My goal for the upcoming term are to become a friendly loving club who doesn’t exclude, but welcomes individuals like how I was, to make the community a better place for future generations, and to dedicated as much time as possible to giving back to the community. -

Irene Kuang, Live Oak Key Club Vice President

THE ELI I A E PROJECT LET’S RAISE US$110 MILLION BY 2015 WHAT IS MNT?

HOW TO STOP MNT

Maternal / Neo-natal Tetanus is a deadly infection that affects mothers and their babies all over the world. A baby contacts MNT when born, suffering extreme convulsions and pain provoked by a strong sensitivity to light and touch. Within days, the child is lost. There is little to no hope of survival, even for the mother.

Mothers can be immunized from the fatal disease MNT with only US$1.80, protecting herself and all of her future children. With YOUR help alongside the Kiwanis and UNICEF, the funds raised and donated to the ELIMINATE Project can save lives EASILY.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Your help as Key Clubbers is crucial this year since it is the LAST year to reach our goal of raising US$110 million to save or protect 61 million mothers in countries all over the world. We have just about 8 more months to reach our goal!

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE

PROGRESS The map from the ELIMINATE Project campaign site to the right shows our progress around the world. Check it out: http://sites.kiwanis.or g/Kiwanis/en/theELI MINATEproject/MNT. aspx

CLUB

RECAPS

On January 8th 2014 three members, an advisor, and I volunteered from 5:00-7:00 pm at Julian St. Inn. Jullian St. Inn is one of my favorite events! It gives my club and I a chance to help people really hands on. Julian St. Inn is a shelter downtown which we serve dinner for the people who live there every other month. During this event you get to really see WHO you're helping and even get to have some great conversations with these people! It's a really heartwarming event and it's a reminder of why I love working with Key Club so much. -

Do you know what a great feeling is? A great feeling is knowing that we helped a family in need. From 8:30AM to 1:30PM on December 24th, Santa Teresa’s Key Club participated in the yearly Toy ‘N Joy event by helping parents surprising gifts for their children. Not only toys, but we distributed out a box of food that contained so much for their family to feast on the day of Christmas. The warmth of the smile as they said, “Thank you for spending your time with us,” and, “My family is going to have a wonderful Christmas because of your help,” brought the happy feeling that we volunteers should always feel. Our time was meaningful to the parents! Now that’s a great feeling! -

Susan Nguyen, Member

Alycia McGeever, Vice President

On January 11th, Leland Key Club sent 7 members to go to Veggielution. Veggielution is a program with a community farm which sends its fresh fruits and vegetables straight to low-income families. Volunteers helped with various tasks such as planting, weeding, composting, harvesting, and more from 1:30-3PM. Volunteers had fun helping out to keep this program running to start its 6th year.

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Hello Super Villains! I hope that your February has fared you well! Although it was a slow month for service, I know that it was a super busy month for submissions for CNH contests and other entries. Best of luck to all contest applicants! This is one of the last few newsletters I will be making for you, Division 12 South, during the 2013-2014 term. It is a bit bitter sweet, but I promise that I will be putting my all into my final creations as editor.

Please continue to do what you do best, and don’t forget to document it by taking photos to submit to the newsletter publications! Even if it is not submitted, sharing it on social media really helps promote what we do as Key Clubbers for our community. Also, I’ve received many questions about how long it takes to create a newsletter for the division! To be honest, my work is slow and steady, so it

usually takes me 30 minutes to an hour or more per page! Stay GOLDEN, Kyle Dimla Division 12 South News Editor
