4 | PAST EVENTS Josephine Ngo Ann Sobrato Key Club Project Coordinator My first OTC was a memorable experience. The workshops were very informative about what Key Club is about and helped me become a better member. I came back home with information about the eliminate project, leadership skills, and ways to improve my club. Afterwards, there was a sandcastle building contest that was a fun way to bond with the region. D12S once again won the contest raising over $1000 towards the eliminate project. OTC was a great bonding experience and helped me build character and leadership!

FIRST TIMER RECAPS! (MORE RECAPS PG.) Jaspreet Mumman Santa Teresa Member OTC gave me an inside look of how Key Club is actually run professionally and efficiently. While most of the information seemed overwhelming to take in all at once, the speakers gave us helpful tips and advice to make things more manageable. It wasn't all informational; we actually got to have fun sculpting sand castles. Overall it was a great learning experience

Being given the opportunity to present the Public Speaking workshop with Donald Franks of Willow Glen Key Club is my absolute favorite part from International Convention. Although I did love spending down time with other Key Clubbers and had an interesting time in the House of Delegates, being able to educate other Key Clubbers on a topic related to leadership building qualities was a true honor. Not only did I enjoy cracking jokes and making several bad puns during the presentation, I also enjoyed the several public speaking volunteers from other districts who showed just how adept they are at thinking on their feet by comparing Key Club to the most random of topics! -Kyle Dimla

International Convention: an experience incomparable to anything I've experienced. Our week-long tour featured Disneyland and Medieval Times, but perhaps the most captivating of all was, of course, Convention itself. As a graduated senior and a representative of my club, division and district, it was an honor to not only host a workshop but also elect and vote for individuals who I felt would effectively uphold the amended portions of Key Club international policy but also leave behind GOLDEN legacies as they CELEBRATE a new year filled with service, leadership and family. - Donald Franks

ICON was truly an incredible experience! From the Disneyland trips, to the educational workshops, to the dances, to the meet and greet, to the heated debates at the House of Delegates, and to the late night ramen, this has been an experience that I will never forget. Performing at International Convention this year had to be one of the greatest highlights throughout my four years of Key Club. Though I originally planned on auditioning for the talent show during the Recognition session, it was truly an even greater honor to be asked personally from the Eliminate SLP Subcommittee to showcase my talents and to represent the Eliminate Project. This truly was a blessing to be able to represent both my home district of CNH, and more importantly, Key Club International. -Brandon Roman

On the morning of FRN, I was already greeted by a bee-eautiful bus. Riding in style—already the perfect way to start off the trip. At the park, we met up with rest of D12S, clad in green and gray. Then came the official rally. Lots of fun and happiness was shared, from auctioning off LTG's to help out PTP, to cheering our lungs out. Despite not winning the spirit stick last year, I was able to meet a lot of new faces from other divisions (and scream my head off on all the roller coasters after the rally). I am really looking forward to going to FRN once again this year. And this time, I am looking forward to D12S getting that spirit stick! Dan Truong

RTC was an amazing experience for me because I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with other people passionate contributing to KC. This year, I was able to attend OTC, and I thought it was extremely fun! It was a great experience being able to meet other Key clubbers from different districts and being able to learn more about my role as an officer. I'm already looking forward to going next year!

Jennifer Nguyen Silver Creek Key Club Secretary

The June OTC was a really great opportunity to learn a ton of new skills for the coming school year. Learning how to manage your time and how to fundraise were particularly important things everyone in our club should continue to learn about. I really hope to see this new wisdom from past Lieutenant Governors play out in benefiting Pioneer’s club and the community. I met a lot of new people in my division and they were all very welcoming. I was really proud of how our sand sculpture turned out.

PAGE 24 ///

Everyone from the division worked together really well, and I think that showed. The amount of money we raised from the sandcastle was really astounding. We achieved $1,398.50 for PTP which is really fantastic and I’m proud of my fellow Supervillains. If it wasn't for the teamwork and effort the whole division put in, then all of this wouldn’t be possible.

As I reminisce on all the events I attended throughout my summer vacation thus far, Willow Glen's Music in the Glen is certainly the most memorable. As soon as I step on campus every Thursday, I am greeted with welcoming smiles from my advisors and fellow key-clubbers, the humming of guitar strings racing in my ear-drums, and the distinct scent of freshly made batches of buttered popcorn, gooey cheese pizza, and hot dogs sizzling on the grill. The money that we, as volunteers for Music in the Glen, raised from selling food and beverages, immensely contributes to the scholarships of many students. These scholarships are given to students with bright futures each year by our Willow Glen Kiwanis advisors. It is quite remarkable how one can devote an hour or two of their leisure day, in order to make an impact in someone's life. Volunteering and being a faithful member of Key Club is so much more than what meets the eye; Key Club ultimately continues to unites members and demolishes any boundaries between each individual.

On July 2nd, from 7:00AM to 10:00AM, I went to Martha’s Kitchen for a service project. Martha’s Kitchen is placed at the Sacred Heart organization just south of downtown San Jose. Volunteering there at such an early time during the summer can be a challenge to any teen, to me especially, since I have gotten used to going to sleep around three or four latest, and not waking up till maybe 10 or noon at most. While I was tired from waking up earlier than usual, I was still excited to volunteer. If my memory serves me right, I got there about 45 minutes early and waited outside for the rest of the KC volunteers that signed up. Waiting there, I watched as the block around me woke up to begin a new day’s work. There was a church to the right of us which was closed, and so were almost all the stores around us. When all the volunteers finally showed up, we went in together and were immediately split up into groups. Two of the three were sent to the sandwich making section and I was sent to wash and pick out oranges. That was awesome. I felt like the god of oranges because I got to pick which orange was eaten or which orange went to the trash. I had so much fun with that that I finished early and moved to cutting bread, then washing apples. By then I was close to

the end of the shift and I was just enjoying myself doing all this work. All this food making was to feed the homeless and hungry people of the surrounding area later on in the day. I believe that people ate well that day because of the great work that we did.

OTC was really fun because while I was at the beach hanging out with friends, I learned how to be a better vice-president and how to serve my community and members! While having fun, key clubbers raised about 2,000 dollars towards PTP by having a sand sculpture contest! It was killing two birds with one stone, and I recommend others to come next time!

Attending the San Jose Giants Race was really a something I don't regret. Here, we with all our spirit, we cheered on runners to keep continuing the rest of the 5k race. As we were cheering, some people even said thank you just for being out there so early. Afterwards, when all clean up was done, they even invited us into the stadium for free drinks and food! This also gave us time to meet some other Key Clubbers that volunteered for this event too! I'm definitely volunteering for this event again.

The Run for Wellness event was more than just an early morning service event. I was able to invite two friends, an international student from Japan and another friend who never had been to

a service event. A couple nights before this event I was thinking about what we all had in common although they weren’t Key Clubbers. We were all leaders with one important skill; communication. I remember the day of the event we were walking to the parking lot and I asked them, “What was one thing that you benefited from this event?” They both said “The good mornings from the runners.” At that point I realized how effective a simple greeting could be.

Volunteering at the Hershey's State Track Meet to help these hard working athletes usher in a new possible future of becoming state champion was a really inspirational moment to never forget. Arriving at the track meet, I and the entire volunteer group were assigned jobs to manage how far the children threw in the shot-put competition. The managers of the competition would split us into groups and 3 people were placed in shot-put boys while the other 3 people were placed in shot-put girls. At the shot-put section, of us would set the tip of our foot on a black mark that was made after a soft ball that was thrown landed. These children threw 60-70 yards with just one throw. It was a phenomenal sight to watch. Afterwards another person (me) would run to fetch the green soft balls while another measured the distance of the throw. We repeated this process until lunch began. When lunch ended, I was moved to the long jump section with Amy Le. Amy took the job of putting the sharp stick into the ground while the manager for this athletic section measured the distance of the foot closest to the starting line. I had to shovel the marks away after the person finished jumping.

PAGE 29 ///

These athletes jumped 9 -8 feet long however, some of these athletes were also clumsy and one of them who got the highest jump ranging in the 9 feet area got his distance scrapped to 6 feet because he stepped his foot back. It was heart breaking….. Nope I face palmed and it shows you need to be in 200% focus with 0% chance of fumbling as well as don’t get cocky. As the results for the races came it, I heard a couple of the athletes ran 5 minute miles and one of them, if I was not mistaken, had a previous record around the 4:50 mile range. Overall, it was an exciting moment to watch these children race and to top it off they were only Middle School students who had the chance to go to Tennessee to compete in the same championship. You don’t get to see a competition like this every day and I hope more children keep running towards their goals. Pun :): the sandbox has bad luck because he always gets jumped.

The Sharks Fitness Face Off was a pretty unique event although the volunteers did not have to do much after setting up all the tents. My friend and I rock climbed and also went around getting free stuff from ads. It was a really fun event and watching people run was pretty cool as well. They said we would get Tshirts for volunteering but we never got them. All and all it was a pretty fun event to attend.

Our club volunteered at the annual 4th of July Morgan Hill parade to help support our local community. Our members met up early in the morning to check in and get assigned a banner. We carried banners that introduced the different people and organizations that were in the parade. Even though we had to walk approximately a mile under the hot sun, I had a lot of fun! I try to volunteer at this event every year because I love seeing the local bands perform and the amazing floats that organizations put together. This year, the parade organizers gave donations to volunteers. It was really nice of them and our club was able to raise a lot of money towards PTP!

Instead of attending OTC like the rest of my fellow Key Clubbers, I decided to volunteer for the Youth Triathlon at my school, Sobrato High School. I recall volunteering at this same event last year which inspired me to do it again this year. The event was expected to go on at least from 7am-12pm, however it ended quite early at 9:30. Upon arriving at the event, I was given my position on the bike course to direct the children where to bike. Not only did I have to direct the kids where to go, I had to display an overall great enthusiasm. With the strong enthusiasm of mine, I utilized it to cheer on the kids to strive to their full potential. The only struggle for me was to stay wide awake. Since the event was so early in the morning, I had to be more alert on where the kids were biking--some could bike the wrong way or take short cuts. As bikers passed by, I began to realize there weren't that many remaining. I wanted to keep cheering them on. I was a little disappointed when they all finished biking.

Sobrato Key Clubbers representing student volunteer organizations!

When my shift was over, I walked over to the finish line with the others to watch and cheer on the kids cross the finish line. It made me happy to see all the smiles plastered on the children, all proud of their hard work and achievement. On the way out, I helped myself with Jamba Juice and a bagel. It was great way to start the morning.
