Ridiculous Obstacle Challenge

When I first heard about this event, I already knew it was going to be fun, whether I volunteered or ran the race, and it was a very fun experience for me. I was stationed at the Sweeper obstacle, where we had to direct runners past these giant rotating "arms" and help anyone who fell off onto the inflatable sides. The runners and other volunteers were very energetic and motivating, so it made the experience a lot of fun! After we finished our 6-hours shift filled with crazy costumes, dust storms, and fun, we helped clean up then got to go play on the obstacles that were still working! Andy Pham Vice President

August DCM

During the August DCM, I didn't expect many to come. Mainly because of the fact that Sobrato is far away and people might think it would be too far. I was happy though. Even though it was a really hot, everyone had an amazing time! I am glad that everything ran smoothly as it did and I am excited to experience other DCMs! Andrew Ko Treasurer

Veggielution

My first event for Key Club was the Veggielution event that was in the month August. I was given the task to plant basils into pots. It was a very simple event, but I still enjoyed spending my time doing something productive as opposed to staying home and playing video games. It was also very interesting to work with plants for I rarely garden. Andy Truong Member

The ROC volunteering event was a new experience for me as it was my first run event I had attended. When I entered the gates, I saw a huge amount of excitement and energy from the thousands of people attending the event. At first, I was assigned to the merchandise tent, where I arranged and sold items to ROC participants, but was soon requested to move to the front tent to assist in distributing T-shirts due to shortage of volunteers on that side. Although the task was repetitive, the diversity of people always entertained me. For example, there was one person dressed like Guy LeDouche, a member of the MXC, another in a hula dancer's dress, and even HotShotGG in a ballerina outfit. Once it struck 5PM, it was time for the volunteers to run the ROC course at a discounted price. This was one of my biggest incentives during the period in which I was volunteering because I wanted to run my first 5K, my first obstacle course. The ROC event was my first run event, but it definitely wasn't a boring one, and has encouraged me to attend more events similar to this one. Kevin Wu Member

Double Road Race

Volunteering at the Double Road Race with the GHS Key Club was a great community service experience! The Double Road Race took place at the Silver Creek IDT Center. It was so worth being there at 6 and staying till 11. From helping set up before the race to handing out cups of water to the 15 and 10K runners along the course, volunteering at this event was really fun and rewarding. We filled up and held out hundreds of cups of waters for hundreds of runners. It was so much fun (getting soaked was just part of the experience, LOL)! My favorite part, however, was getting to build new friendships with my fellow Key Clubbers. Thank you to Key Club for organizing this event! Alejandra Fraume Member

Cleanup Cowells

On August 31st, the Key Club went down to Cowells Beach in Santa Cruz to participate in Clean Up Cowells. We walked around the beach for a couple of hours in groups of two or three and collected trash and recyclables. By the end of the three hours, we had collected a total of 27.5 lbs of trash as a group! The event was a great opportunity to have fun by providing genuine service for the community while raising awareness about environmental concerns. Samantha Coley Member

Outreach Fair

Working behind the booth at the Outreach Fair was an incredibly fun experience for me. I got the chance to spread the word about Key Club by explaining how it’s a fun way to volunteer and make friends. Talking to my fellow students about Key Club and seeing people I’ve volunteered with in the past was one of the coolest things I’ve done in a long time. I’d love to do it again next year. Card-Making for Soldiers

THIS EVENT WAS TOTES AMAZING!!!1!1!!1! Although some of us may not realize it, doing little things like writing cards to our American soldiers will help brighten up their day by a ton. Sure, it's just a card written by high schoolers, but it sure does make a difference. We all don't have to do super extravagant things that will change the world overnight, but we can do the things we can to make a difference slowly. Amanda Lam Vice-President

Race to the End of Summer

The event was great! My role during the race was to help the runners run in the right direction and keep spirits up with our cheers. Everyone was so nice, especially the people organizing the race. They offered many snacks and would check up on us often to make sure we were doing fine. It was fun, and it made me feel great. I loved the event, and I am looking forward to helping more events like this in the future. Trinity Pham Member

Race to the End of Summer

Volunteering at the Race to the End of Summer was unlike any other event I had previously done. For one thing, waking up at 5 in the morning was kind of tiring, but it was well worth it! Also, it was the first time that I had volunteered at a race. The main highlight of the event was when I was pulled out of gear check and was instructed to encourage and cheer on the halfmarathon runners running for a good cause. It felt really nice when I knew that these uplifting comments were really helping these guys. Alongside my friends, we gave support to the runners and had a blast doing it. I thought that the event was pretty organized and that it was well-sponsored. I met some new people, which is always a great thing! At the end of the day, this event was loads of fun and I can't wait for next year. Ben Vo Member

Club Rush

Painting + Planning + Posting = KEY CLUB PREPARATION! Preparing for Key Club’s Club Rush was perhaps, one of the best experiences I shared with my partners in crime. Over three days, we were able to produce a plethora of poster, piles and piles of pins, and even a gigantic logo. It was hard work, but all this preparation paid off— we had a very successful club rush, with almost 400 sign ups! Talk about plenty of people! Seeing all the smiles made, the excitement of the students as they rushed over to our tables, vehemently expressing how we ‘FEEL GOOD’ amidst the crowd—all these remind me of how proud I am to be a Key Club officer. Garden to Community

Being able to help maintain a community garden was a lovely experience in which I was able to connect with nature, community members, and creatures. This event was coordinated via Garden to Table, an organization whose mission is to create a sustainable local food system and build a community. They strive to achieve this by allowing members of the neighborhood to help maintain and run the garden. In addition, Garden to Community gives people access to healthy foods and teaches them how to pick and grow their own fruits and vegetables. At the community farm at West Taylor Street, myself and two other Willow Glen Key Club members along with several other volunteers helped by picking tomatoes and peppers, feeding chickens, picking weeds, and starting a compost. It was definitely worth getting my hands dirty! Being able to take part in this was extremely beneficial all around. Not only was I able to have the pleasure of helping, I was able to gain knowledge from my experience that I can take with me in the future. Shayla Huynh Member
