Happenings in D214 Buffalo Grove teacher selected to participate in intensive summer humanities program

Buffalo Grove High School English teacher Ami E. Relf was selected among hundreds of applicants to study Alabama’s legacy in the Civil Rights Movement over the summer.

The Delegation to South Korea was made up of 14 teachers from the U.S. Each of the delegates teaches the College Board High School Course entitled Advanced Placement Human Geography, which transfers as college credit to many colleges and universities. The Northeast Asian History Foundation sponsors the all-expense paid opportunity for teachers to engage in international field study, collaboration with South Korean teachers, and to share their academic expertise in human geography.

Relf was one of only 30 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Scholars from a competitive, national applicant pool to attend NEH’s Summer Institute, titled Stony Road We Trod, Exploring Alabama’s Civil Rights Legacy. The National Endowment for the Humanities is a federal agency that annually supports these enrichment opportunities at colleges, universities and cultural institutions. The program aims at providing teachers the chance to study with experts in humanities disciplines. Educators selected to take part in this intensive institute will participate in lectures by scholars, interact with iconic leaders and foot soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement, travel to key sites of memory as well as sites dedicated to the preservation of civil rights history (in Birmingham, Selma, Montgomery, and Tuskegee, Alabama), and review archival film footage and other primary source documents as they develop curricular projects.

District 214 teachers participate in summer conference in South Korea Erik Hodges and Jeanne Shin-Cooper, teachers at Prospect and Buffalo Grove high schools respectively, in June participated in a geography education conference and field study in South Korea. The geography activities on the Korean Peninsula enabled Hodges and Shin-Cooper to gain direct experience with the Korean people and their culture. Both attended a one day conference in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, which focused on the geopolitics of the Korean Peninsula, and the territorial and geographical naming issues that have persisted since the end of World War II. The field study included observations at the Joint Security Area of the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, visits to agricultural and industrial sites, the study of Seoul as one of the world’s largest cities, and the historical and cultural heritage sites representing the Korean Peninsula’s 3000-year history. Elk Grove High School student recognized nationally for writing Elk Grove High School’s Nicole Ward was recognized by a national organization for her writing. The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. Only students who are juniors may participate. Ward received a Certificate of Superior Writing for her original writing, one of which was a piece in response to the NCTE writing prompt “Changing the Narrative”; the other was a selection of “Best Writing” either original or edited from something she had previously written. She was presented with a certificate by Elk Grove High School’s English and Fine Arts Division Head Wendy Relich. More than 460 students were nominated by schools across the country. Of that number, 227 received Certificates of Superior Writing and 235 received Certificates of Nomination. Each student submitted two pieces of writing. Two independent judges scored each submission on expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice. ce.d214.org l 847-718-7700 l 7

Monday, August 27, 2018 Rolling Green Country Club 2525 E. Rand Road | Arlington Heights, IL The District 214 Education Foundation will host its annual Foundation for the Future Golf Open and Reception on Monday, August 27 at Rolling Green Country Club in Arlington Heights, teeing off for student success and innovation. Pricing is $250/golfer or $1,000/foursome; tickets to the reception only are $50. The event includes brunch, on-course contests and food prepared and served by talented District 214 culinary students. The reception features hearty appetizer stations, drinks, a robust raffle, entertainment from student musicians, and comments

from Elk Grove Principal Paul Kelly, the 2018 Illinois Principal of the Year. It is an opportunity to connect with staff and community members. Sponsorships for this event are still available. To register or sponsor the event, visit www.214foundation. org or contact the Foundation Office, (847) 718-7708 or foundation@d214.org. The Golf Open annually raises more than $50,000, funding the future for hundreds of students and ensuring continued opportunities for college and career success beyond the limitations of conventional funding for public education.

Nearly $25,000 in Scholarships Awarded A Rolling Meadows High School senior who turned his classroom pursuits and co-curricular activities – from robotics to cross country and water polo – into a 30-second video rap was among the winners of the 2018 Education Foundation Redefining Ready! Twitter-based scholarship, offered to seniors who creatively and genuinely demonstrate how they are college, career and life ready beyond a test score. A Buffalo Grove High School student pilot flying high above the Chicago skyline and three other seniors who demonstrated the breadth of their readiness also were recipients of a combined $5,000 in financial awards toward college. In all, the Education Foundation will award nearly $25,000 in scholarships this year to fuel student success, funded by alumni, parent and community donors. That is in addition to $15,000 in Advanced Placement testing scholarships awarded to students across all six District 214 schools to fund exams they could not afford, empowering an estimated $250,000 in early college credits. In the last two years, Foundation donors have contributed more than $200,000 specifically toward scholarships for

District 214 students. While most are for postsecondary tuition, others fund success for those still in high school, like a scholarship providing private music instruction for Prospect students. The Foundation last fall also launched the Cardinal Endowment, named for the mascot of its first school, with a goal of raising $500,000 by 2020 toward Advanced Placement scholarships and financial awards for career credentials. “We are incredibly grateful to every donor who has come forward and generously, graciously contributed to the success of our students. It is always amazing to watch an alum return and give back,” said Tom Munz, chair of the Education Foundation Board of Trustees. “The impact is extraordinary and often immeasurable. Together, we are able to make sure our students are succeeding not just in high school but in whatever they pursue afterward.” More information on supporting scholarships and the Cardinal Endowment, and details on other opportunities for giving, visit www.214foundation.org. The Foundation provides opportunities for sponsorships, naming rights, planned giving, pledges, memorial gifts and more, and is a 501(c)(3) organization.

General Information

Serafin Fund Honors Legacy, Empowers Futures Rhonda Serafin empowered thousands of learners over the course of her more than three decades with District 214 Community Education, working diligently and tirelessly to improve the lives and educational opportunities for adults in our communities and providing entire families the promise of a brighter future. In her honor, the Foundation in June announced the Serafin Fund for Adult Education and Family Literacy, dedicated to the continued enhancement of opportunities and services that have educated generations under her leadership. The fund will cover areas including Read to Learn and the Catherine M. Lee Women’s and Children’s Center, with an eye on providing additional resources and success to enthusiastic learners where the need is greatest. More than $14,000 already is committed to the fund, and the goal is to grow it to a point at which it can continue to educate District 214 families for perpetuity. “Rhonda has been a visionary leader and enthusiastic champion of the mission to improve the life of every learner in District 214, and this fund continues that legacy,” said Erin Brooks, executive director of the Education Foundation. To give, send checks payable to the District 214 Education Foundation, with “Serafin Fund” in the memo line, to the Foundation at 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60005. Or, visit www.214foundation.org and search “Serafin.” Those interested in learning more also can contact the Foundation Office by phone, (847) 718-7708, or email, foundatin@d214.org.

Namings and Sponsorships This winter, the Foundation worked with Wheeling High School to secure a $150,000 sponsorship for our robotics engineering curriculum from HydraForce, a Lincolnshire-based business. This sponsorship will allow our curriculum to remain on the cutting edge, preparing students for real 21st century jobs with technology that is rare in American high schools. You can have this same impact! The Foundation works with individuals and businesses to offer opportunities to name programs, facilities, career pathways and more in honor of loved ones, educators or others.

Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Carla Koretsky, Wheeling High School Class of 1989 Wheeling High School Distinguished Alumna, 2010

From performing as lead violinist of the Wheeling High School orchestra to pursuing a career that eventually led her to a position as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Western Michigan University, Dr. Carla Koretsky has embodied the spirit of District 214. Her combined passion for music and earth studies led her to achieve unprecedented accomplishments, and that success grew out of her initial years at Wheeling, where teachers and fellow students fostered her future career as an educator and influencer. As a result, Carla, along with other alumni from Wheeling’s Class of 1989, has created a campaign to give back to current students. Here, she reflects on what brought her to her position at Western Michigan University and her plans for the “30 for 30th” campaign.

Describe your involvement as a student at Wheeling High School.

I played the violin in orchestra for four years, and was in Strolling Strings for three years. I also was in the District 214 orchestra for two years and played in the pit orchestra for a couple of musical theater productions.

How did your experiences from Wheeling shape your college career?

I was interested in chemistry from my terrific experiences with Mr. “Fish” Fischbach and Mr. Bauder, who taught an amazing AP chemistry course. They definitely influenced my choice of major and also my career, which has been in geochemistry (chemistry applied to earth/environmental systems).

Describe your path to becoming a professor and a Dean of Arts and Sciences.

After I completed my Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins, I moved to Atlanta to take a postdoctoral position at Georgia Tech. I worked there for about three years, doing research in salt marsh systems off the coast of Georgia. Two years ago, I took a position as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Western Michigan, home to 26 departments in the humanities, social sciences and sciences. We have about 5,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students enrolled. Register Online @ ce.d214.org

Tell us about your plans for the $30K for 30th Reunion campaign.

Several members of the Class of ’89 have talked about making a gift for a long time, and I think now the time is right. Many of us had an exceptional experience at Wheeling High School, both in and out of the classroom, and many have had very successful careers. We want to give back now and help other students have the means to get the same education and experience we did. We are in a ‘quiet’ phase now, looking for a few alumni from our class to pledge matching funds for the campaign. Once we have that in place, we will do our best through social networks to raise the $30K needed for an endowment before our 30th reunion this coming fall. I am really looking forward to fully launching the campaign!

How do you hope this endowment will impact the students of District 214?

We are writing an agreement through the District 214 Education Foundation dictating that the funds be used to support things like Advanced Placement test fees as well as costs associated with participation on co-curricular/extracurricular activities like music, theater, athletics, Science Olympiad and other student groups that were such an important part of our experience. My AP classes were exceptional, and I was happy to see that the Education Foundation is paying for AP test fees for students with financial need. From my work as a higher education administrator, I know how expensive college is and how much having AP credit can help undergraduate students to complete their degrees more quickly and at less expense. I don’t want an AP test fee to be a barrier for any student who has worked hard and gained the skills. The District 214 Education Foundation, www.214foundation.org, empowers giving from alumni, individuals and corporations in ways that will fund the future for our current students. Herzog has been involved in puppetry since receiving a toy marionette from his father when he was four years old. As a full-time professional puppeteer for 44 years, Dave has performed in thousands of shows in theaters, amusement parks, schools, and libraries nationwide. Dave is best known in the Chicago area for performing at the world-famous Navy Pier for 19 years. Herzog has been a guest performer with Chicago’s acclaimed Hystopolis Productions and made his New York stage debut in 1991 at the famed Joseph Papp Public Theater. Herzog creates all of the hand-carved marionettes featured in his touring marionette productions. Tickets: $5-GC/Adv | $7 Door | Children 2 & Under Free
