General Information Cancellation and Refund Policy

Class participants may cancel a class for any reason. Classes canceled eight (8) days or more prior to the start of a class will receive a refund less a $5 cancellation fee. The $5 cancellation fee will be applied to each class canceled and each student requesting a refund. Credit vouchers, minus a $5 cancelation fee, will be issued to students canceling classes seven days or less prior to a class starting. Students canceling after classes have started will receive a prorated amount on their credit vouchers based on the following: number of class session(s) attended, when Community Education received notice of class cancelation, applicable book and material fees, and $5 cancelation fee. The credit voucher needs to be used within one year of the class cancellation. If not met, the credit voucher will be voided. No refunds or credits on account will be issued for culinary or floral design classes canceled seven (7) days or less prior to the start of class. For Community Education Travel (CET), Day Trips are refundable up to 60 days prior to departure and within 60 days prior and only after we can replace spot(s) from a waitlist. All day trip cancellations are charged a $10 administration fee. For longer trips, no refunds will be issued after final payment is due. Sliding fee refunds before departure date may be available on a caseby-case basis only. For refunds due to medical reasons, refunds can be claimed through the insurance company. For non-medical reasons, a CET traveler may get a travel voucher for future travel. Each travel brochure has description of our cancel policy and CET will take it on a case-by-case basis. Trip Cancellation Insurance is included in all CET extended tours. For Cultural & Performing Arts concerts, plays, special events and dances, refunds will not be issued for purchased tickets but we will consider other options on a case-by-case basis. Elk Grove students take first in stock market competition After learning about stocks as part of their personal finance class, five students from Elk Grove High School took first place last fall in a regional stock market competition. The team of Lauren Clausen, Shane Crimmins, Dean Fries, Emma Halfman and Nicholas Hofmann bested 950 other student teams in The Stock Market Game (SMG) program’s online competition for high school students in the northwest suburbs.

Prospect senior heads to D.C. after winning 2018 Congressional App Challenge Muhammet Balsoy was 11 when his father first introduced him to computer programming.

The team increased their hypothetical $100,000 cash to a final portfolio equity of $116,500 during the three-month competition that challenged students to pick stocks they felt would grow based on seasonal demand, current events and research.

Soon after, Muhammet began learning different coding languages and writing simple programs. He enrolled in online courses to build his skills and took classes in Prospect High School’s IT pathway, where he worked alongside his peers to build iOS apps that help others.

Elk Grove’s business teacher Joshua Watson said students conducted research in and out of class to better understand the volatility of the stock market. Students then used concepts learned in class such as diversification to make educated investing decisions. The goal of the competition is to help students build real-world financial skills.

Today, the 18-year-old is the 2018 Congressional App Challenge winner for Illinois’ 8th Congressional District. Elk Grove High School students and siblings Rachel and Roderick Sacdalan took second in the contest.

Wheeling students spearhead campaign to reduce waste on and off campus

Muhammet, a senior, will meet with members of Congress and national tech leaders this spring in Washington D.C., and introduce the winning app he has created. “It’s incredible,” says Muhammet of his journey in computer science. “I never thought it would come to this point.” As part of a computer science class at Prospect, Muhammet this school year designed an app to help students digitally keep track of the school’s schedule changes, including early dismissals, special assemblies and finals. Muhammet went one step further and incorporated District 214’s Career Pathways program into the app. In his app, students can learn about new and existing classes offered in District 214, read course descriptions and better understand course sequences in each career pathway. Muhammet credits his father, who has a master’s degree in computer science, for helping him to discover his passion and his teachers at Prospect for encouraging him. He also says he believes technology can make a positive impact. Register Online @ ce.d214.org

As part of an environmental science class this school year, Wheeling High School students learned how discarded plastic items impact the earth. They also learned they could play a part in improving the environment by educating their peers. The students are spearheading an educational campaign to help the school understand its part in taking care of the community and earth. Supported by a $2,500 grant from SWANCC, the Solid Waste Agency of North Cook County, the campaign focuses on decreasing the amount of waste by using less plastic and more reusable items. “I hope students walk away with the knowledge of how to recycle and reuse,” said Andy Shover, a senior. “The world is precious. We’re only given one and we’ve got to keep it here.” The campaign kicked off last September with a garbage audit of the school to collect data to better understand how students and staff are using the trash and recycling bins. The environmental science class learned that that people did not fully understand what was and was not recyclable. ce.d214.org l 847-718-7700 l 7

The event will include appetizers, exhibits and performances, simultaneously showcasing the brilliance of today while funding the future of District 214 arts. The event will be at 6 p.m. Monday, March 18 at Metropolis in Arlington Heights. Tickets are $20 through February 15; $25 in advance online after February 15; and $30 at the door if seats are available. Sponsor a Student or College Visit A sequence of college visits, targeted college readiness programming and alumni mentoring will highlight the new Next Generation Pathway to Completion, a program created by the District 214 Education Foundation to ensure postsecondary success for students whose parents did not complete college. The Pathway kicked off informally with a college visit this fall to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Carthage College in Wisconsin, bringing first-generation students from all schools, and their parent or guardian, to the campuses. A spring visit to Lewis University and the University of Illinois at Chicago is next. Beginning next school year, select first-generation juniors and their parents will receive programming aimed at readying them for college; that will continue their senior year and, for four years post-high school, they’ll receive mentoring from District 214 alumni prepared to make a difference and help empower futures. The Foundation is seeking sponsors to make this program a success. Opportunities are available to sponsor a college visit for 50 students and their parents ($3,500); fund a first-generation scholarship ($3,000); fund a laptop for a student in the cohort ($900); fund the cost of programming and mentorship training ($1,500); or otherwise provide support in an amount meaningful to you. All contributions will collectively bolster this unique program. To discuss support opportunities or if you are an alumna/us interested in mentoring, contact Erin Brooks, (847) 718-7688 or erin.brooks@d214.org.

Put Your Name On It Have a lasting impact as you fund the future. Alumni Spotlight: Melissa Douros, Prospect High School Class of 1996

For the majority of her professional life, Prospect High School graduate Melissa Douros – who holds an advanced science degree and works in the emerging technologies space – has spent her time in predominantly male careers. Two years ago, she made a gift to inspire the future. Douros, a 1996 Prospect alumna who now lives in Buffalo Grove with her husband and children, established the Brett Robert Jostes Girls in STEM Scholarship through the District 214 Education Foundation, promising female graduates in District 214 an opportunity to help fund their collegiate pursuit of study and careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. “I honestly tear up every time I get the email about who receives the scholarship,” she says. “When I think about how far we have come since I was little, in terms of supporting girls to be anything they want, and then think about how much farther we still have to go – I know these girls will be part of that.”

Joining the growing ranks of District 214 alumni giving back was an easy choice when it came to doing something to appropriately honor his legacy. “I have this need for people to remember him,” she says. “Having him in my life always made my day a little better, and now I can help others in his name.” At Prospect, Douros was a gymnast, cheerleader and part of Orchesis, a dance troupe led at the time by her mother, a role model for Douros who urged boys to be part of the group. She also fondly remembers teacher Janet Koelper, who had her in class when she, then a junior, landed in a freshman algebra course. “She didn’t treat me like a dumb kid, and she didn’t treat me like a freshman,” Douros says. “She gave me leadership opportunities and helped me more than I even needed. I always remember how much I learned with her as my teacher.”

Since the scholarship’s inception, two District 214 female graduating seniors with futures in STEM careers have been awarded the money – one, from John Hersey High School, going into automotive engineering and the other, from Elk Grove High School, entering the field of electrical engineering.

Douros later earned a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern Illinois University and a master’s in human computer interaction from Iowa State University, and runs the digital product team at Great Wolf Resorts, overseeing the group that works on the product and design for the company’s website and mobile apps.

Douros says she fiercely recognizes the need to help “our girls” – as she calls those in District 214 now – redefine STEM, and make more of its jobs their own.

To join Douros in funding the future through the Brett Robert Jostes Girls in STEM Scholarship or other awards, visit www.214foundation.org and choose “Impact.” Should the fund reach $10,000, it can be endowed for perpetuity.

“We want to give back to our community,” she said, “and invest in our future leaders.” The scholarship is named for Douros’ high school classmate, a prankster who made life sunnier for all who entered his life. She’s quick to recognize the reality that the scholarship is named for a man but intended for women; she says she knows that if Brett were alive today, he would strongly support the mission. Discover: Cultural & Performing Arts District 214 Community Education Presents The Concert Series at Forest View American Icon Johnny Cash Tribute starring Doug Allen Nash Sunday, June 9, 2019 • 3 pm n

This production is a tribute to the musical legacy of the late great Johnny Cash. Featuring Cash’s classic songs as well as his later works, portrayed by international performer Doug Allen. In addition to being an entertaining stage show, the production is supported by original Cash-inspired music, including the single “June,” written by Doug Allen and the legendary writer/producer, Jeff Silverman. Mr. Allen, an avid Johnny Cash fan, was inspired to perform Cash’s music because of the open dialogue that Johnny personally shared with him. Doug Allen captures the physical appearance, vocals, speech, mannerisms and spirit of the immortal Johnny Cash. With great vocals and “A-list” musicians, the show captures the authentic Cash sound, making American Icon: A Tribute to Johnny Cash a must-see for everyone! Tickets: $15-GC
