If you’ve been dealing with grief or coping with the death of a loved one, and would like to know how one person dealt with it, spend an evening with Author Dennis Depcik. Depcik will share his personal journey after the death of his wife Maggie for an hour on Monday, October 27, from 7-00-8:00 p.m.. His presentation, Running from Memories (class # 0586), will be in Room C102 at Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights. Although his presentation is free, you need to register by calling Community Education at 847-718-7700 or going online and register at www.ce214.org. Depcik, author of Wouldn’t It Be Something, signed up for several Community Education classes after his wife died on November 14, 2010, to “continue his healing.” “Although I had been dealing with my grief for over two years, it’s a long journey with unanticipated twists and turns and I believe it’s a process that continues for a lifetime.”
Depcik took two Community Education classes: Margaret O’Brien’s Surviving Grief and Susan B. Auld’s Writing to Heal, and considers them the prelude to his entering and winning 3rd place in The Annual Arts Unlimited Contest sponsored by District 214 and The Daily Herald, and the writing and publishing of his book. In Surviving Grief, he found the class to be comforting to share similar stories and common feelings. “It was a moving experience that helped me more fully understand the unique commonality of the many conflicting emotions we all face in some of our darkest times,” he said. In the Writing to Heal class, he confirmed the value of writing as an effective way to face his grief. Both classes - Surviving Grief and Writing to Heal - are offered this fall. The evening of his presentation, Depcik will openly and honestly share his transition from “being sad for what he lost to being glad for what he had in his life.” He will also talk about the letters he and Maggie wrote to each other almost 50 years ago.
The Gold Card Club newsletter is published three times each school year by District 214 Community Education. Our office is located at 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60005.
