Conclave 2014 by Sean Delos Santos | Reseda President-Elect

% 8 /FXT

The Division 25 West Conclave of 2014 was a thrilling experience for the candidates and the fellow Pufferfish. Throughout the event, the Key Clubbers were laughing and having a good time. Jokes (especially puns) and compliments flew through the air as people took fl selfies in their suits and dresses. The election was well organized and the whole process went smoothly. The only exception was the lack of snacks. The two very-ca- pable candidates for LTG, Neda Fadaee and Olivia Villasana, deliv- ered their speeches, a difficult task for many people. Although they were under tons of pressure, the two candidates managed to execute their speeches with flying colors. The voting process proved to be dif ficult when the delegates (2 from each club) realized that the candi- dates were almost equally qualified for the position of LTG.

However, in the end, a winner had to be chosen and after a very, very lengthy wait, the new LTG was announced and it was Olivia Villasana who managed to pull through and grab the crown. The volume of the auditorium soared as she was announced the new Di- as she vision 25 LTG for 2014-2015. Afterwards, the January DCM was held and the clubs gave their monthly reports. An icebreaker ac- companied the DCM, one that helped a Pufferfish find his com- patible other. After much laughter, the day drew to a close, the Puffer fish took their final Snapchats, and the last punch lines were told.

Special Guest, Claudia Diaz, D16 Ltg, talks about the upcoming joint event between D25W, D25E, and D16.

Get to know Olivia Villasana Your 2014-2015 Lieutenant Governor 1. What was going on in your mind, as Matthew was getting ready to announce the winner? I was thinking how surprising it was that I was pretty calm. I thought I’d be almost fainting considering I had nightmares about Conclave. I tried to keep my mind buzzing and distracted because that moment was too much. Having three years of hoping and dreaming before your eyes wrapped up in a name being announced? That’ll make anyone want to explode. 2. What went through your mind, when Matthew announced your name? Relief and excitement, not really any “yes, I won!” kind of stuff. It was like I was peering through a looking glass and telling the shy weirdo from ninth grade “we did it!” I was excited because my dream came true. Oh and I was really happy he pronounced my last name right! 3. What are your goals for the 2014-2015 term? How do you plan to achieve them? My main is goal is to expand the division and strengthen our smaller clubs. By doing this, we’ll get the chance to inspire, serve, and fundraise more. We’ll achieve this by showing everyone how Key Club really makes a difference, encouraging people to join and make friends with everyone in the club, and dissolving any problems like location or fi- nance (Taft members can pay off dues by fundraising with candy box sales; we keep tabs on where people live to help others carpool). We’re going to analyze the clubs a lot so we can get to the root of the problems and solve them. 4. To get the division comfortable, tell us a bit about your hobbies, likes/dislikes, and some of your favorite things. Besides Key Club, of course, I sing in an a-cappella group at my high school as Soprano. I spend free time with music, art, computers, and eating. I would probably marry a pizza if I could, and Disney just about sums me up. I’m into dreaming, being curious, and bringing people together like Walt Disney was.

5. What are your strengths and weaknesses? My strengths would probably be my creativity and resourcefulness. I’m always full of ideas and I’m able to get these ideas onto paper and running. My weaknesses would be that I’m a perfectionist and I don’t like to give myself breaks. 6. Do you have any last things you would like to say to the di- vision or like us to know in this interview? I have probably Facebook stalked all of you. My high school “career” honestly isn’t about getting into a prestigious college, it’s about being happy and I’m happiest putting my entire life into Key Club. The Kiwanis Family is who I am and I don’t see the point in looking back in 40 years telling myself that I wasted my youth being upset because I didn’t have the courage to not listen to what society told me to be.

GOLDEN Key Clubbers of February

Member of the Month

Officer of the Month

Olivia Villasana Vito LaRussa

El Camino’s Ice Skating Night On the night of February 2nd, Key Clubbers from El Camino Real came to the local West Hills ice rink, compelled by the sense of support for the Kiwanis and the promise of a fun and fulfilling night. To the delight of the participants, they experienced an eventful night which, not only brought positive memories for the club members, but also contributed to the club itself. Through the social interactions and conversations Th shared between members, the social link that holds the club together was strengthened.

Also, not only was the turnout very high, the quality of the time spent at the event was similarly superb. In this way, I believe that the key clubbers were able to realize that the club is not simply a way to earn hours or spend time with friends, but a way of immersing them- selves in the Kiwanis experience and creating bonds with others which stand the test of time. It was an immensely successful fundraiser and helped to improve member rela- tions with one another. The night was filled with chatter and laughter as Pufferfish skated along with one another, either gliding along gracefully, or slowly and clumsily. Either way, everybody enjoyed themselves and their compa- ny.

Dance Written by: Sarah Wong | Chaminade President “Does a “Does anyone watch Disney movies?” Chaminade’s Joe Melendrez, the DJ for the afternoon, calls out. He is met with a loud roar of excitement as the guests throw their arms in the air in eager anticipation of the timeless “Hakuna Matata”. This dance is not the average high school homecoming dance or even post-game winter informal. The Reach for the Stars Dance for Special-Needs hosts guests of the Los Angeles Special Olympics, an array of handicapped youth and adults, as they share a special afternoon in a fantasy Winter Wonderland. Sponsored by Chaminade’s Reach for the a Stars Club, juniors Samantha Boncich and Jillian Martin made their dream into a reality with the support of their advisor Mrs. Porter, her hus- band and volunteers from the Chaminade community including Ms. La- belle and the Key Club. Girls were pampered as volunteers applied makeup, curled hair and painted nails as it was hard to tell who had bigger smiles, the volunteers or the girls. Stories of friends and favorite shows were swapped over cookie decorating while old school tunes blared from the speakers. From Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to the “Macarena”, time was forgotten as friendships were struck, silly pictures with wigs taken at the photobooths and conversations shared over Mrs. Benning’s home- made petite sandwiches. As the celebration came to an end, the afternoon was one that surpassed the expectations of both the guests and the volun- teers, a true winter wonderland.

Divisional Board Messages Hello Pufferfish! The 2013-2014 term is coming to a close soon, and many of us will be holding officer positions after this upcoming DCON. Alas, many of our dear friends are also seniors, and will be leaving us, so please remember to treasure your last times together as a club and give them a proper farewell. Let them know how much you've appreciated the work they've put into Key Club for all these years. However, do not slack off with service events simply because it is the end of the term. This goes for everyone. DCON preparations are important, but the job of Key Clubbers is to serve the community and that should be our number one focus. With the closing of this term is also the closing of my role as your With the closing of this Executive Assistant. I hope I've served you well this year. I won't be leaving yet though -- for the 2014-2015 term, I will be serving as the President of SOCES Key Club, so I hope to continue to get along with everybody and make a great Key Club year. <3 Uyen Lam

Heey Spikey Babies, my term is nearly over if you really think about it because now that all of our elections are done we all have our new cabinet members. It has been a huge honor to hold the title of executive assistant for our division. I started off key club in the 9th grade looking for an extra curricular to say I was active in, but key club became more than just an extra cur- ricular. Key club became a huge part of the formation of the person I am becoming. I learned a lot from all the great mem- pe bers I met and all the officers I've worked with. I want to thank all of you for working so hard out of your own will and on your own time. You've all done brilliant jobs! I am so proud to call you my Ohana. Like most high schoolers, I was lost on who I was as a person but I soon found out what type of person I was after discovering what I enjoyed to do. I enjoy communicating with peers, leading them to path of greatness. Like family, I only want the best for you. For my next position I will be serving as Vice President of my club, again partnering with Uyen Lam who is our club's presidential elect. <3 Katarina Baltazar

Hello 25 West! I hope y'all are as excited for our Splashy Salute next weekend as I am! Be sure to bring spare change to pie the incoming elects! Also, for those attending DCON be sure to stay update through your Presidents about upcoming information. I hope to see you all soon :) <3 Matthew Reminick

Hey Pufferfish! It’s so shocking that in less than 2 months DCON 2014 will It’s so sho arrive, and the 2013-2014 term will come to a close. It feels like it was just yesterday that I received the “Division News Editor” title. This past term, I’ve seen so much amazing ser- vice, through my eyes and reading it from the articles sent to me. It has really inspired me to work so much harder than I believe I could ever. Thank you to all the members for putting in dedication, spirit, and service, through all of your projects. It’s all so incredible and I wanna thank you from the bottom of my sternum for your amazing generosity in spirit and service. Being Division News Editor, I have really learned about myself creativity-wise and lim- it-wise. I have pushed myself beyond so many limits for this wonderful, life-changing organization.
