A Word from Our President Hello my little kiwi babies, My name is Lena Chen and I am your club President of the year 2013-2014! I hope everybody started off the school year with a kicking bang! Skyline Key Club has played as an awesome role in bringing to the school a club that offers leadership training, meeting new people, amazing resources, and most of all , a safe place for anybody who is willing to help and attend community service events. The goals of our club are written out in bold letters every year: SERVE OUR HOME, SCHOOL, AND COMMUNITY. This means that we will be doing a countless amount of service events, as we want to make our community a safer and better place for everybody around us. My goal this year is to bring as many members as I can possibly get to attend these awesome service events, which in return, you will receive a hefty amount of service hours. Many of these service events will consist of helping out at huge fundraising events (i.e. Color Run, Run or Dye, Fight for Air Climb, etc.), helping out at children’s events (Easter Egg Hunts, children’s parades, etc.), feeding the homeless, and even helping with outdoor events (i.e. Skyline’s beautification day, Dimond Park clean up, etc.). There are going to be an endless amount of service events that you can choose from every week, and we need members like YOU to help us out! In addition, this year we will be up and about with fundraising for the many charities that Key Club International is affiliated with such as UNICEF (Eliminate Project), Pediatric Trauma Program, and even some of our own single service events. Tune into our club meetings to learn more about what and how we do it. In the months of October to December, we will be raising funds through our annual Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes (that you can also pick up!) where every $1.80 a member raises, will save a child and mother from Maternal Neonatal Tetanus disease. Our goal this year is to raise $1000 for us to be mentioned at this year’s District Convention in April 2014! Let’s work together and reach this goal! Skyline Key Club opens our arms up to welcome everybody who is interested in making a difference in the world as well as those who wish to become a better, brighter, and more knowledgeable leader in their community. Skyline Key Club has made such a difference since the year 1977, and as of the year 2013, we will work to leave our legend behind for those who will also join our Ohana <3 I hope to see you all at our general meetings, every Friday during lunch in Mr. Fiess’ room (Room 70)! :)

Events This Year By Stephen Yorn, Vice President of Administration Key Club has been important to me because I’ve learned what it meant to take on responsibility -- it’s a place to make new friends, and I enjoy helping out those who need it most. My most memorable memory in Key Club was during sophomore year when I attended my first Fall Rally North. I was there ready to have fun with my friends, but when I was out there yelling like a maniac, I felt the spirit and passion from the other surrounding hundreds of Key Club members. The atmosphere and chills up my spine told me this is where change starts and we can do that by creating a million waves of service. In order to create those waves, this year my board and I wanted to target events that we think our members will find interesting and would continue to inspire them to help others. So far, we’ve found events such as the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, the Color Run, and other well-known events throughout the Bay Area. We’re planning to find more. We would like members to attend at least two regular community services. Another one of our goals is to have more people attending district services like Fall Rally North. I am excited to show my fellow Key Club members what it means to help the community while being responsible for my schoolwork because it is possible and maybe it will inspire a younger member to follow my footsteps. Hopefully Skyline’s Key Club will expand and create a stronger family bond because I feel that is what we lack the most. I’m feeling ready and hopeful to be putting out more events for our club this year.

Key Club’s Past Events in 2012-2013

Swim-a-mile By Julie Ho, Historian for SKC and Executive Assistant of D2 Swim-a-mile is one of my most favorite service events. Every year that I've attended this event, I've been able to gain a new perspective and experience. For this year, I was able to switch from task to task. Therefore I was able to count laps at the lanes for the swimmers and also manage to spend time at the Kid's Art Area, which was probably the most favorite part of the day. When I was creating sea animals cut outs with my member Brandon Delgadillo, this very brave kid came up to us and stroke up a conversation about how this event reminded him about his summer travel around Hawaii and how much I needed drawing lessons. For almost every service event I've attended, I came more into contact with adults than I did with children so this was a very unique and different experience for me. I also did run into some rude people during the event, but that didn't impact my view on how much I love volunteering at events, so I shrugged it off. Regardless, it was a great day, and I was very thankful for my Division 2 Kiwis for attending the event with me.

Bake Sale Contributions from Vivian La, Fundraising Chair and Lauryn Yee, Treasurer At the bake sale we held in Montclair Village, we raised funds that would be donated to PTP. To the Skyline fundraising chair Vivian La, the bake sale was a “great experience” where the junior learned a lot about organizing events and interacting with people. “We baked a lot of goods that we were able to give some away,” La said. “Even though people didn’t like sweets, they were still able to make donations, and we really loved that. We were able to connect with other members and with a purpose. Skyline Treasurer Lauryn Yee expressed the same sentiments. “I was part of a good sized group selling baked goods to the many people walking by during the sunny day,” Yee said. “I have never been at a bake sale before, so I didn’t know how well things would sell, and I found that people are very generous when it comes to donating to a cause.” According to Yee, the cupcakes and cookies were like an added bonus to many of passer-byer’s donations. “I was glad that people appreciated our efforts to help kids,” Yee said.
