THE EDITOR

What’s up Ellies!

I hope you all are well and excited to get a break from school as we get closer to Thanksgiving. This month, the Ellie Editorial focuses not just on service, but also giving thanks as we try to help those in need, especially in this upcoming holiday season. I’m so proud to see so many of you staying active at our division events and or club events. Keep up the good work! I know we feel kinda tired right now, so I hope you guys take some time off and relax over this Thanksgiving break. You guys got this and have a happy and safe Thanksgiving! Also, to all the seniors out there, you guys got this for this year’s college app season! Remember to also to take a breather and destress once in a while!

THE LTG

Happy Fall Ellies! College Apps season is coming to an end & we’re reaching a new year! I know I’m not the only one that is very happy that 2020 is over despite all the lessons we’ve all learned from this crazy year. In addition, we are halfway through the term! Let’s continue to serve and finish the year strong. We are also reaching the period of time in which we are going to be choosing our next Lt. Governor who will take on this role of serving this amazing division. If you are interested in running this year or in the future, make sure to attend the Candidate Training Conference. Not only is it a MANDATORY training for Key Clubbers interested in running for LTG but it’s a great way to build up your resume for future positions. Contact me if you have any questions! I hope you’re all having a safe holiday and you do your best to minimize the spread of COVID-19!

Serving with a smile, Hilary Wong Division 35 East Lieutenant Governor

THANKFUL LETTERS OF LOVE This month, Northview Key Club held a Thankful Letters of Love event. Members wrote cards to the residents of Havard Creek Nursing Home. Due to COVID-19 residents are not allowed to have visitors and may be feeling lonely especially since the holiday season is coming up. Northview Key Clubbers wanted to wish them a happy thanksgiving and remind them that they are not alone in these difficult times. Gabriela Rojas, treasurer and the organizer of this event says, “The reason I wanted to do this event was because I wanted to make the patients smile. I’ve known these patients since I was in middle school and this convalescent home is like my second family. They’ve taught me so much stuff and I just wanted to share my family with others to show my gratitude and that they have lots of love and support from not just their families but also from Key Club.” Thanks to Gabriela and the members of Northview Key Club our club got to bring some joy during the holiday season to these lovely residents.

TRIVIA MONTH

07

In the month of October up until November 1, there were four events for each week of October. These events all work towards helping people around the world and improving the environment. The first week focused on the Unicef Math Quiz. First, you would have to put in your email to donate your earnings after answering simple math equations in one minute. The earnings help pay for children’s education. The second week bases itself on Ocean Hero, where one plastic bottle is recovered from the ocean every five searches. The third week focused on Free Rice. To help with world hunger, Free Rice donates ten rice grains for every correct answer. The last week targeted world hunger. Bean Bean Bean helps donate beans by setting a goal of how many questions to answer correctly to earn beans. Although we are stuck in quarantine and aren’t able to help around the world physically, there are great sites online that help out within the community and the environment!

FIELD OF VALOR COLOR-A-SMILE

Field of Valor is an event where it honors many veterans in Sierra Vista Middle School by putting up many flags. Our job is to set up the baseline, which are the poles, in order to connect the flags. This event is to help gather many donations to support the veterans that have served our country with 100% donations going to them. This event was on November 5th, where we teamed up with Covina ASB, Covina Wrestling, and Covina Interact Club. It was a good amount of people for each club that attended to help. The weather was nice to work outside, and it was really fun! Though the work of hammering down the poles was difficult and tiring, it was good to know that we were the ones that also participated and helped out to prepare the event. Plus, lots of my friends were there! I honestly enjoyed the event, it was a good excuse to get outside!

BRIDGES

09

On October 17th, IPoly Key Club was thrilled to be hosting another service event with the UNICEF club. Members who joined in the paper bridges activity were able to write letters of support to orphans around the world. There was an option between the participants handwriting the letter themselves or submitting a thoughtful message through the organization’s website. Officers were able to guide and interact with new people. General member, Jenna Salem said, “It was really fun to write to these children but I did feel a bit awkward since it was my first time going to a Key Club event.” Both clubs hope to hold more events together in the future and learn about their members.

CHRISTMAS CHILD

Over the months of October and November, WHS Key Club took part in an inter-Key-club and campus-wide inter-club project called Operation Christmas Child, where participants packed presents for children living in third-world countries into shoeboxes. On the Walnut High digital campus, the project involved 6 different clubs, including Key Club, NHS, LEO, FCA, Interact, and Hands4Hope, while on the Key Club level, 8 clubs over 2 divisions participated in this event. There was a Packing and Wrapping Event that was held on 10/25 over Zoom, where participants played games and interacted with each other while packing their shoeboxes full of toys, school supplies, hygiene supplies, and personal notes. After packing their shoeboxes, participants then dropped off their presents at Suzanne Park on their given club’s drop-off day. Though there is still a while before Christmas arrives, the spirit of care and service is already here.

-Joy Wang, Walnut Tech Editor

11 During the month of November, my Club hosted a service month where we allowed new members to participate in a month filled with service to introduce them to Key Club and how it works. The events that we hosted were Free rice, color a pumpkin, Operation Christmas Child, and Paper planes. During the free rice event, our club made 899,390 grains of rice with over 45 participants! Boxes of supplies we made for Operation Christmas Child as well as letters for troops and medical workers during our paper planes week. Lastly the Color a Pumpkin allowed students to color and send colored pictures to people who need them most. South Hills President Michele Lam stated on the month exclaiming, “Service month was a huge success! we were able to get over 200 service hours and it was a great month of service to introduce new members to.
