y p p ha y r a janu Good bye 2016, and hello 2017! Happy January Elephants!

I hope you all had a FANTASTIC winter break and holidays. With the break over, it’s time to get back to that weekly, biweekly, or monthly service! We have plenty of events this and the upcoming months, so be sure to come on out.

In addition to cool events and socials, the time has come to select a new Lieutenant Governor for the 2017-2018 term! By this time now, election results should have come out. Whoever my baby may be, I have complete faith that this individual will do the ABSOLUTE best he or she can to bring this Division to new heights. Don’t worry Division 35 East! You’re in good hands. But don’t forget about me please! The 2016-2017 term doesn’t end until Disitrict Convention 2017, where I become retired and the Lieutenant Governor-Elect becomes installed. Be on the look out for details about DCON 2017! Have an ELEPHANTastic rest of your day! Stomping through for Service,

Emily Chen

Lieutenant Governor 2016-17 Division 35 East, Region 13 California-Nevada-Hawaii District Key Club International

d oo f n o i t c a ntry pa There were about six volunteers plus the adults from Action that helped put the bags together and hand them out to everyone in line. There were probably about 100 people waiting in line since 12pm just to be one of the first people when the doors opened at about 2pm. There were four tables inside full of bags already prepared waiting to be given to a family in need. All of us volunteers were given a task. Two of us handing out bags, two giving out the frozen turkeys(which by the way froze my hands), and two of us taking the items to the people’s cars using a shopping cart. The process was quick in which everything was already organized and there was only one entrance and one exit making it easier because the line kept everyone in one place instead of making it chaotic. It was great seeing the smiles of people’s faces because they knew that they would have food for their dinner this year. Many people were also homeless so they were excited because they normally don’t have that much food. It was a pleasure helping out Action Food Pantry and not only that, but it made me realize how thankful I am to be alive and helping others have a splendid holiday like mine. Definitely giving thanks for that memorable day.

isaiah’s rock I just want to start out by saying this Isaiah’s Rock is way different than the other Isaiah’s Rock events throughout the year (which are great too) and in my opinion, it’s one of my favorites. This is my second year going to this event since my freshman year and I always love serving this organization at this event. For starters, it’s so amazing to help out with this organization that just pours their resources, time, and effort into the community to help the less fortunate so I always know that they have a great effect on the community. The basis of the event may just be to organize and package Thanksgiving food together to distribute the next day but what’s really important is to think about the impact it would have on the less fortunate people who received everything we put our effort into. Even though I may have a holiday meal every year with your family, it always feels nice to take some of my free time out to help others who may be struggling to make that meal happen. Every year it really warms my heart to see so many organizations and people getting together to work on a big project like this on their free time. Like always this event was also a great opportunity for me to meet and socialize with other people outside of Diamond Bar Key Club which was really fun for me since these people are really friendly and share a passion for serving the community like me.

triathlon Attending the Triathlon was an absolute pleasure. When I arrived in San Dimas, I bundled up with fellow members in the cold and witnessed dozens of athletes, young and old, getting ready to race. As soon as the event started, I was placed at the food station, which handed out fresh fruit, drinks, snacks and festive pumpkin pie to athletes after they finished the race. We must have sliced and placed over thirty pies! Dividing each pie equally was tricky-- cutting the first slice out is the hardest-- but it was all worth it. We were able to serve over 500 slices of pies to all of the runners, bikers, and swimmers braving it out in the cold. Other volunteers were stationed around the course of the event around the beaches, bike stations, and running trail providing water and giving them encouragement while they were running. Near the end of the event, I received the chance to see athletes finally cross the finish line, where Key Clubbers were giving out medals and cheering them on. It was extremely heartwarming to be able to connect and congratulate them personally at my station by greeting them with food and a smile. (Because who doesn’t like food?) My holiday season was definitely well spent!
