letter from

the editor

HELLO NEIGHBOR, HOWDY FRIEND!! Greetings fellow elephants, I hope you all had a wonderful break! As we start to get back into the swing of things, I hope that all y’all do not stress yourselves out too much! I know that last year, second semester was really hectic for me because I took on too many responsibilities. While academics and extracurriculars are important, your health is more important, so make sure to take good care of yourselves!! Aside from that, I hope that you will all keep on attending Key Club events. I have had the priviledge to meet some of you guys already, and I can say that your enthusiasm for Key Club is aamzing and I can’t wait to see where it goes!!

collegewood mother & son dance

After an exhausting day of school, volunteers from Walnut High School Key Club gathered together to volunteer in an exciting party to help destress and celebrate the end of the school week. On Friday, November 13th, a couple of Key Clubbers came to the Walnut Senior Center to participate in Collegewood’s Mother & Son Dance. The purpose of the fun filled evening was for little boys and their mothers to have the opportunity to bond with each other through a spectacular event with lots of games and food involved. During the actual event, Key Clubbers split into pairs to set up and run different game booths. Some of the thrilling games offered included bean bag toss, a gigantic version of tic tac toe, miniature basketball and hockey, and football throws. The Collegewood students would line up for each game along with their mother to compete and see who could win more. It was nice to see each pair of guests smile and laugh together during the addicting games they enjoyed. Later on, the kitchen staff served either pizza or hot dogs and a cookie for each individual, along with a refreshing glass of lemonade. The staff was very kind and appreciative as they allowed all volunteers to take a break from their duties to eat dinner as well. Once we had all eaten, we took the game booths down and the dance floor opened up as festive music was heard. Each mother and son danced together and it was interesting to see them show off their crazy dance moves. At this point, even us volunteers decided to join in on all the fun! Pretty soon the evening had come to an end. Even though we all could’ve been studying or doing homework, this volunteering experience allowed us to convert our worries and stress into passion and service. Seeing how ecstatic the kids were made me feel very grateful for having the opportunity to serve as a Key Club member. It was also Collegewood’s first time hosting such a special event, and as a volunteer, I’m happy that we were a big help in giving it a good first impression. The entire event was a complete success and I can’t wait to participate in Collegewood’s Mother & Son Dance again next year to help it become an even greater experience, not only for the guests, but for the volunteers as well.

covina chris On the chilly night of December 2, Covina Key Club volunteered to work with Division 35 East at the 67th Annual Covina Christmas Parade. We were dispersed to work in different shifts such as disbanding, programming, and standing guard for light towers. In disbandingj, decorative floats and parade members were led from Covina park to Covina High School’s parking lot when they were finished. In programming, we distributed out the programming to the parade watchers down the street. After the parade, we had a great opportunity to socialize and meet new wonderful people from our division. It was a heartwarming experience to watch our happy hometown get together to watch and set up this festive parade.

stmas parade

Christmas is a season of giving and many teens had the opportunity to give back to the

community by volunteering. Every year the City of Covina hosts a Christmas parade in which people from surrounding areas come together to enjoy a wonderful night filled with smiles and joy. This year members from Division 35 East signed up to help guard the light towers. These towers were placed along the streets where the parade was going to be taking place in order for everyone to be able to see and enjoy the floats that would be passing by. Volunteers were asked to make sure that the general public didn’t get too close to these towers because of its intense heat and power. No one wanted an accident to occur. That is why everyone was paired up and assigned to guard a specific light tower. Because of the large amount of volunteers this year, there were other tasks that were given out. Some volunteers were asked to walk along the parade route and pass out the parade line-up to those that were already sitting down waiting for the parade tp start. Others were sent to help guide members of the parade on where to go for the awards ceremony that was at the end of the parade. Our very own Kiwanis International participated in the parade and it was a delight seeing members participating in the parade and cheering their hearts out. Many volunteers had a great time guarding the light towers because not only were they able to watch the parade, but they were also able to spend some time getting to know the families that sat near them. There were many spectacular performances such as Impact Dance Academy, Santa Claus, Ballet Folklorico, marching bands, and many more. Despite the cold weather, this event was truly memorable. Many teenagers are looking forward to volunteering next year or participating in the parade.

rowland club update

On December 3rd, the local senior citizens gathered for a cute prom together. The Hacienda Heights community center was made to have a masquerade ball ambiance with a live singer and band. The live music and wafting smell of food kept Key Clubbers in high spirits when serving all the lovely seniors. Members were positioned to serve both main dishes and appetisers (and were also able to have some of the lovely food after). To shake off the food, Key Clubbers joined the seniors on the dance floor. Nearing the end, a candy buffet was given out where the seniors could satisfy their sweet tooth. A special thanks goes out to Mr.Bashir for chaperoning all the members that went!

san dimas club update

In the month of November and early December our club has been increasingly participating in community events. For the first time in a while our club had ten people attend Fall Rally South and it was exciting for our new members because they got a taste of the interconnected Key Club experience. We will definitely have more people attend next year and win back the spirit stick. After Fall Rally, our club volunteered at Bowser Bash on November 18th. Our volunteers helped raise money for an adoption center and helped celebrate the cute dogs that were at the event. The volunteers helped set-up for the event and decorated a cute photo booth for people to take photos at and remember this event and the cause that we were supporting. Bowser Bash brought a lot of happiness and joy to our volunteers and the dogs we helped out that day. Our next event was at Isaiah’s Rock where we packed food along with the other divisions. The volunteers that attended this event stated that they enjoyed this event because they got to make new friends and enjoyed the experience of coming together and packing food for those in need. Our first event for December was our town’s annual Holiday Extravaganza where a whole street is blocked off for carnival games, music, and food. Our volunteers got in the holiday spirit by dressing up and working the game stations at the event. We helped set-up decorations, tables, and chairs for the community to come spend a few hours to relax and have good food on December 2nd. Our club has maintained our membership and hopes to continue this until the end of the year.

basically books

This school year, Diamond Bar High School Key Club has been helping out at Basically Books, a nonprofit local bookstore, staffed completely by volunteers. The first time I volunteered was in November, and as I stepped inside the quaint bookstore, I was unsure of what to expect. It was old, but charming. It has been a while since I was excited to be surrounded by books, but seeing how so much care was put into maintaining the shelves of stories, I felt inspired by the volunteers. That day, Key Clubbers consolidated boxes of books, from all genres and time periods, into smaller boxes which were to be donated someplace else. Organizing books was a very calming activity; it was a quiet and meaningful day at Basically Books.

During this busy December, our club commenced with our usual two meetings where Paola Cortez, a dedicated member, donated 80 pop tabs and was awarded. We also had a cabinet meeting where we planned many ideas (i.e. Jog a Thon in March) for the upcoming school semester. Some club members came to help make the boxes and they came out very beautiful. We just finished our toy drive, which was between dates December 1st and 15th. We have received many toys and are excited to donate them to Toys For Tots before Christmas for underprivileged children.

holiday parade On December 1st, La Puente Key Club had the honor to assist in our city with our annual Holiday parade and Christmas Tree Lighting! Our members arrived to the La Puente Community Center around 5PM and were set with the tasks of helping people get in order for the parade along with signing in. After getting everyone in order, members then moved to City Hall where they also organized people there as well. Then, volunteers were split into different jobs like helping in the snow area or helping those in the parade. Those who helped in the snow area were put into different age sections and were in charge of making sure no snowballs were being thrown and making sure everyone had an equal amount of time in the snow. Despite the chilly weather, our members pushed through and brought out their smiles and joy while helping the children, enjoying the holiday cheer over snow from the children. Members who helped during the parade were tasked with walking behind the cars during the parade while waving to family and friends. This event certainly brought the community together to celebrate the upcoming holiday season, and definitely made our club proud for the service we were able to give back to our community.
