Happy March Elephants! Can you believe that this is the very LAST month of the 2016-2017 term? Though I may be leaving, that doesn’t mean you should forget about and stop service! Under March’s term, there will be so many different opportunities to SERVE your community, so be on the look out for those! With my reign coming to a close, I would like to invite you all to attend the end-of-the-year banquet with me, to celebrate and look back on all the achievements we have made TOGETHER this term. I can’t wait to sit and cry with you all! Have an ELEPHANTastic rest of your day!

Emily Chen

Lieutenant Governor 2016-17 Division 35 East, Region 13 California-Nevada-Hawaii District Key Club International

Two of our members went to the INSAN event in Pomona. It was located at a homeless shelter in where we did various things to help. We helped bring food into the kitchen, gave the homeless anything they may require when taking a showers. We also handed out blankets or anything needed my new people arriving to the shelter. Later that day we went downstairs and plated and served Persian food to the homeless, and by the end packaged bags with sandwiches, water and various other things to hand out later on. The whole event overall was very eye opening and inspiring. Everyone worked well together despite some of us being from different cultures, we had smiles on our faces and greeted the homeless with smiles and warmth and they gave us that back in return. We had a great time and would for sure do it all again.

One Saturday afternoon, members from Rowland Key Club were thrilled and prepared to bowl at Brunswick West Covina Lanes. But first, a DCM was held in order for every school to announce club reports and to receive division updates. The excitement and anticipation every attendee felt as they waited in line to pay for bowling was amazing. The most heartwarming feeling, however, was knowing that those fifteen dollars were being donated to The Eliminate Project to help mothers and babies in third-world countries. On the other hand, members raced into the building and eagerly grabbed their bowling shoes. The competitive atmosphere was overwhelming as we input our nicknames for our lane. Many strikes, many spares, and unfortunately, many gutters were seen as some of us amateurly rolled the bowling ball down the lanes. There were many losses, as many of us had low scores, but a feeling of victory was still there, knowing we had loads of fun with our friends and supported a preferred charity!

Kiwanis held a fundraiser during Covina High School’s Colt Day and was there selling deeds in which 250 acres of land was split to be made into something that was similar to bingo. They released cows at about 10 am and if the cow pooped in your square then you would win a certain amount of money. Afterwards they allowed for children and teens to pet the animals that were there. Even though it was a chilly day and a Saturday, many teens and families had an amazing day with their friends; all while getting to know the school a bit more. This event is a great way to explain a part of key club because everyone involved took a few hours out of their Saturday morning to help out with this event. Everyone was united and had fun all at the same time. Many teens enjoyed volunteering for this event and that's what key club is all about, volunteering not just for yourself but for others as well.

Key Club volunteers had the opportunity to set up and help run a robotics First Tech Challenge tournament, which supported over twenty-three competitive robotics teams. On the night before the event, volunteers helped to unload the cars, trucks, and U-Hauls full of equipment that would be needed the next day. After the long process of getting everything unloaded, the volunteers were provided with a dinner of pizza by the hosts of the competition, Walnut Valley Robotics. Volunteers then split to each work on different assigned tasks, from transporting equipment to the gym, where the tournament would be held the next day, to physically constructing and setting up the boundaries of the competition’s arena pens. The next morning, volunteers were sent out to help control the flow of traffic, as there were hundreds of people going in and out of the gym and the practice room where all the robotics teams were preparing for their rounds. When the competition rounds started around noon that Saturday, Key Club volunteers would swoop in in between the rounds to reset the arena in preparation for the next group. Not only did the volunteers get to watch some of the FTC tournament, they were essential to the smooth running of the tournament. At the end of the day, all the volunteers were able to pick up a lunch and other snacks in a lounge specifically set up for volunteers.
