FROM THE

LTG

HELLO ELEPHANTS! My name is Emily Chen, and I am honored to serve as your 2016-2017 Lieutenant Governor. I currently attend Walnut High School as a junior, and will be ending this upcoming term as a senior. Over the three unforgettable years of serving my community, I was able to create life-long friendships, venture out of my comfort zone, and witness the tremendous impact we have on our community as individuals who genuinely care about improving the world. I cannot express the gratitude I

feel in returning the favor to the organization who has given me so much, and allow you all to experience what I have over the years. From the bottom of my heart, I can honestly say that I am ecstatic for the upcoming months ahead of us. Division 35 East, get ready for the extraordinary-est year yet!

STOMPING THROUGH FOR SERVICE,

EMILY CHEN

Division 35 East Lieutenant Governor

KIWANIS ONE DAY

04

PAST EVENTS

One of the events that CO’s club has participated in was the Kiwanis One Day: Care Kits for the Homeless, in which our club joined Kiwanis members, fellow elephants, and 35W in creating packages for the homeless and cleaning up the highways in Hacienda Heights. The event was a fun-filled day as the two divisions mixed together and were able to work together to clean up the sides of the roads, including collecting cigarettes that are particularly harmful to the environment. The day continued with fun ice breaker activities in which the clubs were able to bond and interact with one another until the last activity of the day came along. The last activity was packing care kits to send to the homeless. Altogether 101 care kits were made in order to celebrate 101 years of Kiwanis! It was a fun day for everyone that was present and the Charter Oak Key Club members were definitely glad to help and appreciate Kiwanis for the opportunity.

INSAN stands for mankind, an organization that focuses on helping those who are vulnerable.

INSAN EVENT

William Workman embarked on Comfort for Critters’ journey to make shelters a much safer and more comfortable place for animals across America. On March 25th about twenty key club members gathered in our room and made approximately twenty two blankets using fabric bought at our local market. Those blankets were then donated to the Bichons and Buddies pet shelter. In efforts to make the blankets warmer, we doubled up fabric and tied the ends together. All in all, the project was successful knowing our blankets are being used to give comfort to pets in need.

MOE ROBLES Workman

I usually attend an event where they feed the homeless a three course meal: salad, main dish and dessert. The salad is set to look lavish and serve as nutrition for those who do not get the chance to eat healthy. Then comes the main dish, which usually consist of delicious chicken, rice and beans. The last serving is a dessert, which can be ice cream, cookies, etc. just to give them a taste of something sweet. Our supervisor makes sure this is done in a particular manner in order

to demonstrate that we care. We are taught how to cut vegetables, and most importantly, educated and made aware about what is happening around us. What I love about this event is seeing the smiles from people and their never-ending gratification. You directly make a difference because you are serving to them and seeing their responses in the process. Not only are we given a chance to help others directly, but also privileged to gain knowledge in the process of doing so.
