FROM THE

hello elephants! My name is Emily Chen , and I am most humbled and honored to serve you as your

2016-2017 Division 35 East

Lieutenant Governor. I am

beyond delighted to serve you all, and bring this Division to new heights. Can you believe there’s only 9 months of the 2016-2017 term left? Time does fly by fast! Even though we’re only three months into the term, we have started off this term strong with over

1,084 hours service hours completed and a significant amount of funds raised for the Pediatric Trauma Program in the month of April alone. Keep up the great service, Elephants!

3

A few of the goals I have set for Division 35 East this year is... > to raise a minimum of $4,500 for PTP and $2,000 for March of Dimes, have at least one Division service event per month (not including DCMs), achieve a minimum of 12,000 service hours, reactivate the Division Instagram account for publicizing events, and establish an atmosphere in which members are welcomed and able to be comfortable in their own skin. With your help, I am confident we will be able

to not only reach, but also transcend these goals.

Because service never stops, I hope to see you all at our upcoming Division events throughout the rest of this summer. We will be holding our annual Division Carnival, a Region Beach Clean-Up, and Officer Training Conference, and much more! Make sure you keep your calendars open for these fun-filled events. I’ll see you soon!

Stomping through for Service,

Emily Chen

Lieutenant Governor 2016-17 Division 35 East, Region 13 California-Nevada-Hawaii District Key Club International

EMILY CHEN lieutenant governor CaTherine cao

executive assistant

Hello Elephants! My name is Catherine Cao and I am HUMBLED to announce that I will be serving Division 35 East as one of the two Executive Assistants for the 2016-2017 term. One of the biggest loves of my life is my 1-year old puppy, Ginger, who has been the cause of my stress and happiness for the past year. Additionally, my favorite candy is Kit-Kat or Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, favorite dog breed is golden retriever, and favorite hobby is cleaning my room (I’m gross I know). My goal this year as Executive Assistant is to INSPIRE the members of D35E (thats you!) into becoming future leaders of Key Club and to fall in love with this organization just as much as I did for the past two years. I can’t wait to take all of you on this wonderful journey to creating memories that last for a lifetime! I am so excited and hyped for what the next term holds, so I encourage all of you to have an open mind and take all chances. I’ll see you all soon! Logging out, Catherine Cao :-)

March suayngam

executive assistant

5

Hello fellow Elephants! My name is March Suayngam and I am more than HONORED to be able to serve as one of your Executive Assistants! Some of the things that I absolutely love are sushi, dogs, and basically anything Disney related. Something that I really hate is when your friend sees your message and doesn't reply. For fun I like playing the guitar, sports, and dancing. My biggest goal as a DLT member is to give my full effort in creating lasting memories and an awesome fun-filled year for all the members that I serve because that's what many people have done for me. A lot of you know me as "March" but that's actually not my name at all and it's no where near close to my real name. I'd tell you about it but that's a story for a different time. If you guys want to know more I guess you'll just have to come up and ask me about it!

andrew castillo Hi, my name is Andrew Castillo and it is my HONOR to serve as Division 35 East's Secretary. Aside from spending time servicing my community, I love painting, sketching, drawing, and anything art related in general. However, that is not to say I'm good at any of it. I also love to play tennis though I'm also not very good at it. I love to listening to Lana Del Rey and watching quirky TV shows like Doctor Who and Adventure Time. However, most of the time you can catch me doing my homework, frantically trying to fit in some time for sleep. It is my hope to one day help people by being a doctor, but for now I'll spend my weekends servicing my community one weekend at a time.

In my free time, I like taking pictures and going to different cafés. I’m a perfectionist and I’m almost always probably doing something artsy. I am also the President for Covina Key Club and one of my biggest goals is to be able to increase member retention as well as raising lots of money for the organizations! Please do not hesitate to come up and greet me (or show me pictures of dogs)! I always love meeting new people. HERE’S TO A GREAT TERM!

headcoordinator spirit task

Hello you elephantastic human beings of Division 35 East! I'm your 2016-2017 Head Spirit Task Coordinator, Lindy Chen! I'm going to be a junior during fall at Walnut High School. I LOVE LOVE LOVE dogs. They're the best things on earth besides pandas, mac n' cheese, and of course, Key Club! I love show choir, photography, making crafts, and finding places with good food. During my free time, I like going to service events and I like to watch TV shows such as Friends (I relate most to Chandler), Parks and Rec, or Grey's Anatomy. I love laughing and making jokes, especially "terrible" puns that my friends sigh at. As Head STC, I hope us elephants get that 3-peat at Fall Rally! I also hope to raise more money for our fundraisers, and that our division increases in numbers. Most importantly, I hope that each and every one of you elephants have an amazing year full of service and fun! I'm so excited to meet all of you, so if you ever see me, don't hesitate to say hi! :)

Hi! My name is Agnes Tran and I am so hyped to serve as this term’s Member Recognition Coordinator! I am currently a sophomore at Charter Oak High School, and I am also on COHS’s tennis and dance team. My goals for this term are to make sure every member feels awesome and SPECIAL ( because you ARE ) and to continue to inspire everyone to be the best Key Clubber they possibly could be. Some facts about me is that I lovelovelove cats, but I actually have a cute puppy; I could probably spend the rest of my life eating sushi and have no regrets; and I have a pretty diverse taste in music (my favorite band is The Maine, and my favorite kpop group is undoubtedly BTS). If you see me at an event, make sure to say hi! I might look intimidating, but I swear it’s probably because I’m just really sleepy all the time.

ashley lee Hi Division 35 East, my name is Ashley Lee and I am so honored to be your Inter-club Coordinator for this term! I currently attend Walnut High School and I absolutely love to eat, sleep, and binge-watch Friends or How I met your Mother! I also really really love anything Disney or Harry Potter. recognition member of the month:

Chris Moy

A member of San Dimas Key Club, Chris Moy is easily described as hard-working, bright, and helpful. Even though his ter m recently ended, Chris has really stepped up to train all the new incoming officers. Chris is an all-around great member who never fails to make someone laugh. In a single month, Chris has earned over 15 hours, which just goes to show his dedication to the club. Chris consistently attends to as many events as possible, and even goes as far as to find events for his club! Chris serves as an inspirational figure to many of his peers because of his dedication. Chris is the per fect candidate for May’s Member of the Month, and has the ideal qualities of a good Key Clubber.

officer of the month:

Katelyn Ta

Katelyn Ta, described as “the best Treasurer at Rowland,” shows incredible potential, even with her first year in both high school and Key Club! Katelyn is a dedicated officer and is always coming up with countless fundraiser opportunities. In fact, Katelyn was able to raise the most donations for Eliminate Week -- $88.02. Always cheer ful, she never fails to offer a hand to those in need. Katelyn takes time to help others with a smile, and does not hesitate to go above her job duties. Wholehearted and spirited, Katelyn is definitely someone to count on, and I cannot wait to see what she will bring for this ter m!

club of the month:

Diamond Bar

Even with the new ter m just beginning, Diamond Bar has shown exceptional promise in what they have to offer! In this month alone, the club had eight different events, basically two events every week! Not only did they have a surplus number of events, Diamond Bar also has shown a consistently high member attendance. With great volunteering events and an even better member attendance, there is no doubt that Diamond Bar deserves May Club of the Month.

On April 24, 2016, the Parent's Place Information Fair and Festival took place at Cortez Park, in which the fair is held for those with special needs. Many people attended this annual event with their children and families, and volunteers were present in the event as well. South Hills Key Club volunteers attended the event with open minds and ready helping hands. Some volunteers were assigned picking up trash that littered the park as the fair continued, and some even helped with managing booths that provided fun games for attendees to play; a few volunteers worked on the “Moon Bounce”, as well as a couple of other bouncy houses where the kids can play with their heart’s content. Lunch was later provided to volunteers at the event, with In-N-Out burgers being served to those with hungry stomachs. There were also plenty of other booths for games, information, and food for those attending. As the day drew to a close, many volunteers left the premises with smiles and certificates that provided proof of their valuable help during the event. One Key Clubber even stayed throughout the event for six hours, with their service beginning from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.! It’s incredible to realize the dedication of Key Clubbers, and the hard work and effort they put in helping others in the name of service, and hopefully, we all show that same dedication in future events where Key Clubbers will be attending!

APRIL dcm On Saturday April 23, 2015 our Bonita Key Club board attended our very first DCM/service event with our new officers. The DCM/service event was held at Morgan Park in Baldwin Park. At the event we had the chance to meet with other fellow key club members for other schools that were in our division, Division 35 East Elephants! We also got to meet key club member from the west division. When we first got there every key club member that attended participated in a warm up game. Nayeli Martinez our co-vice president was one of the people that were chosen to go in the middle of the circle of key clubbers. After the warm up game the two division split into separate groups and talked about

past and up incoming events that have and will happen. After everyone was updated the two divisions met up again and took one huge group picture. Also the old division officers got to announce the new division board members, handing each new member a gold balloon. Soon after the new officer announcements we were told that we could go buy boba and popcorn chicken that the key club division was selling. (P.S. it was delicious!) Then after finishing our short snack all the division members got to work and started to put together the peanut butter sandwiches with the supplies that everyone donated/brought. People were also able to design socks using puffy paint. These products would then be donated.

diamond bar birthday party

This month I attended the Diamond Bar Birthday Party, the city's biggest annual event. Hundreds of people come to Pantera Park every year to celebrate cultural diversity and the “Spirit of Diamond Bar. Therefore, many volunteers from other clubs, schools, and organizations helped out as well. The city birthday party is a huge event starting in the morning and ending in the evening, so there were several jobs for the volunteers. They lent a hand by setting up the park and running the booths and stands. I assisted with decorating the park with red, white and blue balloons to demonstrate city spirit. I also helped manage the prize booth where we offered small prizes like candies and knick-knacks. This is where kids redeemed prizes from the tickets they won from games at other stands. It wasn't a big job, nonetheless, it brought a smile to my face to see the kids so joyful and excited.

I remember going to these city events as a child, so I think volunteering at city events is an appropriate way of giving back to the community. The Diamond Bar Birthday was a first-hand experience of the effect volunteers have over their community. Without the volunteers, the city would not be able to host events like fairs and parties. I think it was cool to see the people I was helping d i r e c t l y .

Kiwanis pancake breakfast It’s been a tradition for Kiwanis Club of South Hills to host their annual Pancake breakfast. This year, the event was held at Covina’s Heritage Plaza on Saturday April 30. It was 6:45 a.m. when I arrived; as well as 4 other people from our school’s Key Club. The event is usually about four and a half hours, starting at 7:30 in the morning and ending at around 12 noon. It was extremely cloudy and shivering cold in the morning. All of the teens volunteering were trying to keep themselves war m. After we signed in, four of us decided to start wrapping utensils around napkins. This would help people from having to keep getting up to get a fork or a knife. After wrapping about a hundred utensils, we split into different groups. Some of us put syrup on the tables’ while others cleaned trays and piled them on a table. By the time we finished our tasks, about 7:30 a.m., Covina High School’s Band arrived and set up quickly. It was interesting to hear the type of music they played. At first, the line was short for people getting pancakes. We thought that not many people would arrive due to possible rain.

13

About an hour passed by and only about 10 people had arrived for food. But within a few minutes, everything changed. It started sprinkling and we thought it wouldn’t be a big of a deal because we had very little people. All of a sudden, the line had like 20-30 people arrive and it started pouring! This was so unexpected. Everyone was rushing to move the tables underneath trees or small roofs that would cover people from the rain. Me and Wendy handed people trays to help them carry their foods. We even helped an elderly lady take her food and coffee at a dry table. The rain started to diminish and everything was calm about 10 minutes later. Everyone helped clean up any trash left behind. Meanwhile, Charter Oak’s Band had arrived and they started playing; despite the rain. More people arrived and the cooks were rushing to make enough pancakes and eggs for all. Sadly, it was 10:30 a.m. meaning that my shift was over and I needed to move on with my exciting life. This was my first Key Club event as an editor. It was amazing to see how many people arrived to

help out with the event. Even with the cold weather and rain, it was a great experience to remember. Everyone went through different emotions like crying, because it was so cold, smiling, because everyone was happy to be able to eat food, frustrating, because the rain made it almost impossible to not get wet, but most of all heart-war ming, because for a few hours we were all one big family.

> Northview: Zulelalee Escobar, Editor Charter Oak’s club had the privilege to help with the pancake breakfast that Kiwanis hosted, along with some other key clubs from our division. The day started very early as the club arrived at 6:45 to begin work, they continued to help till 12:30. The morning started out very fully and see the day progressed, rain started to fall. Just as everyone began to feel disappointed and thought thought that people would not show up, people started to arrive with smiling faces, and Covina and Charter Oak’s bands both played very well, making the event positive and fun, and the sun came up! Our key clubbers worked hard rain or shine to make sure everyone had a good time, whether they were serving breakfast, cleaning tables, refilling drinks, signing in other volunteers, and cleaning up afterwards. The event was very fun all around for our club and we are glad that we were given this opportunity again by Kiwanis and can't wait to do it again next year.

This past month Covina High School Key Club volunteered at the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast held by our lovely South Hills Kiwinis along with Charter Oak, Northview, and South Hills. Covina High School had 5 volunteers help out for this event. Our shifts worked from as early as 6.45 AM to as late as 12:45 PM. We helped mixed the batter with this screwdriver-like contraption and refilled coffee and juice cups if someone needed another helping. Our volunteers also helped resupply the batter, juice, coffee, butter, and forks and knives! While volunteering, talented bands from Charter Oak and Covina also perfor med for those who sat for breakfast. Coming to this event has always been a fun time because we get to see the smiles on everyone’s faces as they’re served their delicious breakfast. On top of that– the kids are helping to serve them!

Rowland Club Update In the following picture, we have Christine Nguyen working diligently on creating non slip slippers for children at April’s DCM, Poppin’ for Service a collaboration with D35W. With these non slip socks, we can reduce the amount of child injuries. With this service project we realized that you don't need a bunch of money or materials to save a life. In addition, at this DCM made a bunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the nearby shelter. Even though you may not have thought that it was much, a single amount of help is all you need to make a big impact.
