HAPPY AUGUST ELEPHANTS!

With summer coming to an end and school beginning, I am both sad and happy. But I am mostly happy to jump start into the new school year and motivate future Key Clubbers to join this organization! I am absolutely ecstatic to invite these new students, and show them the tremendous value in community service and leadership. In addition to our August DCM/Dog Toy-Making on the 27th, which is also National Dog Day, there’ll also be a lot of other fun activities, such as our Region Training Conference, annual Pre Fall Rallies leading up to Fall Rally, and Fall Rally itself! The Region Team and I have a lot in store for you at this year’s RTC, so be sure to be on the lookout as we release details! I’ll see you all soon!

Stomping through for service,

Emily Chen

Lieutenant Governor 2016-17 Division 35 East, Region 13 California-Nevada-Hawaii District Key Club International

recognition alyssa mcclaine

member of the month

I've had the pleasure watching her Key Club life grow. This is her first year, but I've seen her grown tremendously. There are no doubts that Alyssa is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet! Alyssa is extremely humble and she never expects anything in return! In all the years I've known this person, I have never heard her complain. For example, recently we had an event where some of us served food to foster families for Fourth of July. We were standing for hours and basically inhaling smoke, but I didn't find out until later that this person was getting a headache but she didn't say anything! I've always witnessed her doing small acts of kindness like giving up her chair, driving to far events, making sure everyone is okay. This person is so selfless and such an amazing human being! She is the epitome of a great Key Clubber. I can't wait to see what she brings to the club!

Christine Nguyen

offucer of the month

This officer is extremely dedicated and committed to Key Club. She's extremely involved and resourceful, and never fails to go beyond her call of duty. For instance, under the stress of planning what to sell at Region Picnic, Christine stepped up and suggested a fundraiser. Not only did she come up with a great idea, she actually devoted more than 12 hours of her time and singlehandedly made 150 macaroons, which helped her club raise over $200! But wait, there's more! This person also stepped up and filmed and edited an instructional cheer video her home club! So without a doubt, your July Officer of the Month is Christine Nguyen!

charter oak So this club has really upped their game this year! Even if the event isn't close, you can count on Charter Oak having their officers and members attend to help out! Even the club's president offers rides and makes sure everyone is accounted for by bringing extra water and sunblock. This month, this club has also had events which they opened to the division, and those events turned out pretty successfully! So for the month of July, I'd like to recognize Charter Oak as club of the month!

HELLO ELEPHANTS! The school year has started for some of us and I know how saddening that sounds. But, I am most excited to see how many members we can get to join Key Club this year to share our love for helping our community and spreading our spirit! In this new school term, I hope to see an increase of members as well as member retention and I cannot wait to see all of the clubs’ results. Let’s keep working hard until the end of the term! Til’ then, keep on stomping on, Elephants!

SERVING FOR

our saviors

The Covina High School Key Club has joined forces with our club buddies, Charter Oak and Northview, in this great event known as Serving for Our Savior. The church staff were all very nice and appreciative of our arrival to work. We had different tasks before the line of food service began. In the hour of preparation, we had some people folding forks and spoons in napkins that were tied off with a rubber band; others were working in the kitchen slicing watermelon into triangular shapes.

We worked together around a table cutting up garlic bread in the kitchen as well. It was now 5 in the evening, time to serve the homeless families and individuals. Everyone had their own station along the tables as we served lasagna, string beans, watermelon, and strawberries with whipped cream, along with beverages. We were greeted by hungry people but despite of their situations, they had smiles on their faces and appreciated our service to them. It was an amazing, insightful experience and we cannot wait for when we can come back to serve.

Region 13 picnic Every year, the different divisions meet up as a region to demonstrate the spirit that they have at several different events before Fall Rally, including the Region 13 Picnic. At the beginning of the day, icebreakers are held between those of all the different divisions. They are a great way to make new friends and meet new people through all the partner games and competitions, not to mention a fun-filled day to hang out with friends. After the icebreakers, the divisions rallied themselves together to practice their respective cheers. Our cheers were shaky in the beginning, but gradually fell into unison after diligent practice. There were many different booths hosted by the different clubs, selling food and drinks ranging from macaroons to boba to spam musubi, making sure there was plenty of goods to eat. There was also burgers and chips provided. After lunch, the divisions once again gathered together one last time to polish up their cheers. Finally, it was time. Division 10 North went first for the spirit battle, concluding with Division 35 East. The seals of Division 35 West ended up taking the spirit stick, but Division 35 East will surely win the spirit stick at Fall Rally for the third year in a row!

Action food pantry It was early Saturday morning, on July 2nd, when Dana Zeidan and I arrived to Grocery Outlet in Azusa. Although it was still morning, the temperature was about 90 and all the volunteers were starting to feel the heat coming our way. Despite the fire that had occurred a few days earlier and the heat wave, we all still managed to arrive outside the grocery store and help set up. It was about 10 am when me and Dana arrived. We helped put the ketchup, mustard, napkins, etc. on a table. Then Dana helped by giving out sodas to each person that bought a hot dog or hamburger. Meanwhile, I had about 20 balloons in my hand and gave them out to any child or teen that walked by the grocery. As I gave them a balloon I told them “Have a great day!” and they had a huge smile on their faces. Once I ran out of balloons to hand out, I went with Dana and helped hand out sodas because a line was beginning to form. It was a great experience to see all the people that had arrived to buy food after hearing that the money raised would go to the homeless and to help out those in need.

Some adults even donated anywhere between 1 dollar and 20 dollars. We even sold food to firefighters and police officers that are serving our country and surrounding communities. They told us how proud they were to see how so many volunteers and people united for one great cause. The one thing that made all of us feel great was how we helped a homeless that hadn’t eaten for hours. He had come up to us and said that he didn’t have any money to buy himself food. So the people in charge were kind enough to give him a free hot dog AND hamburger PLUS a drink. His face lit up with delight because all he wanted was something to eat. Dana and I helped clean up any trash left behind and plates that were left behind. They probably made about $200 for food to feed the homeless and shelters. Overall it was a great day and one to remember because of all the people we made smile. We can’t wait until ACTION Food Pantry has another event where they sell food and collect donations.

Jim davis beautification While the rest of the Hacienda Heights citizens barely start waking up to the warm 8AM sunlight, Rowland Key Club members join their fellow Wilson and Los Altos servant leaders in hard work and fun in the sun! Much like the monthly clean-up event, Adopt-a-Highway, volunteers pick up any trash in sight, leaving the sidewalks and roads spotless. However, this special event’s purpose was to prepare for an even more important event-- the Kiwanis Fourth of July parade! In order to help our wonderful Kiwanians in hosting a fun event, volunteers took turns using big gardening tools such as leaf blowers and rakes to provide the sidewalks a deep clean. Our Kiwanians, Mr. Bashir and Mr. Salgren, led a group of ten volunteers, who together walked about a mile and carefully cleaned each spot; there was not a single sight of leaves on the cement, not even in the cracks! I myself had the opportunity of pulling a small wagon that held trash bags and raking leaves into piles, while Michael Yu used the leaf blower to clear the cracks of dirt, as Ben and Helen Guo scrubbed the ground using brooms. Overall, this event was exhausting yet very rewarding; civilians had a clean place to sit and watch the parade two days later and volunteers earned some experience of gardening!

T-ball practice

At the T-Ball practice volunteer I was able to interact and teach kids under the age of five or six. I learned from one of the volunteers on how to teach kids and handling different types of them. The schedule for each practice was very simple. At 4 o’clock PM there was a short, quick staff briefing explaining what we were doing and what to expect.

We demonstrated to the kids on how to grip the baseball or how to pass it back and forth. At the conclusion of the game, we each gave the kids a tip of the week. This tip of the week was, “Have fun, try hard, and be a good sport.”

parent’s place

open house

On the sunny day of June 24, 2016, Key Clubbers from South Hills and other schools volunteered to help set up the patios and offices for West Covina's Parent Place organization in the first shift, which went from 1 pm to 5 pm, and later assisted them during the open house itself in the second shift, from 5 pm to 9 pm. In the first shift, a few volunteers arrived early to begin setting up decorations. Flowers and banners were hung, tables were set with their matching flower table cloths and pineapple decors, and balloons were blown up and made into bouquets. Food was provided to the volunteers as well, ranging from pizza and buffalo wings to tacos during the later part of the shift. In the second shift, volunteers assisted the front desk with greeting the newcomers who wanted more information about the organization itself. Meanwhile, the music was loud and joyful, and more food was provided to the new wave of volunteers as they took their breaks. All in all, the event was ever more successful thanks to the ready and helping hands of Key Clubbers, from schools far and wide.

adopt-a-park On July 2, 2016, we came out to Cameron Park with Kiwanians and other Key Club members. At this service event, we helped the park look cleaner to people visiting it, whether it was by sweeping the flooring area around the newly installed playground to removing trash out of the wood chips or simply going around the park using our trash grabber to pick up the unwanted trash.
