DIVISION CARNIVAL

Every year, Division 35 East organizes a carnival in which every school in the division could attend. This year the event took place on the evening of Saturday, August 20 at Rowland Heights Park. Every school sold a variety of food and drinks such as donuts, boba, tea, gatorade, fruit, water, chocolate etc. Not only did we have the opportunity to sell food, but we were also able to play games like pin the tale on the elephant, fish bowl, go on the jumper, and water guns. The activity in which many of us had tons of fun in was the hamster ball. Many of the members had never gone in one before and when they entered, most of them said it was the best experience they had that day.

Prizes were given out to those that participated in the games and tried their best. We could all agree that the best part of the carnival was the unexpected water balloon someone had started. A person threw a water balloon at the wrong person and from there, the huge competition started. Anyways, the most memorable thing that happened was when the members of Charter Oak played a small prank on their President Andrew Castillo. While they were taking a group picture, they got a huge Gatorade jug filled with ice-cold water and dumped it all over him. That evening was one for the books.

CLUB RUSH

September 4. Lunch time. 12 PM. The cries and calls of wild students can be heard from the nearby field: it was club fair day! Various clubs hosted their booths, advertising and luring peers to join their clubs. I eagerly rushed to our very own Key Club booth. Despite the scorching heat and stuffiness, a huge line formed behind the laptops set up with our online application to help save innocent trees-- we are a service club after all! Fellow Key Clubbers exclaimed how good they felt. Officers chanted loudly and proudly the past fall rally cheers, grabbing the attention of many potential members. Seeing so many new faces truly put a smile on my face. We were able to successfully recruit over 100 members that same day!

For the month of September, Bonita High School had its annual club rush. Since it was just last week, we did not many have other events to report on this month. Although there were about 30+ other clubs, Key club was a popular choice for most freshmen. A large amount of people had prior knowledge to sign up for Key Club, probably from older siblings. A lot of them were signing up for the benefit of it looking “good” on a college application. As they were signing up, our officers would try to explain, in depth, what the real meaning and motive of Key Club is, as well as our core values. The explanation included the talk about Key Club being international. Some people were not aware that individual school chapters worked with other schools for volunteering and fundraising. It was interesting to see how some freshmen were astonished after explaining some of that. .

Also, there is always those couple of freshmen that considered Key Club to be a club that made keys. It was nice to clear some of that up. Furthermore, it was heart warming to see how many people had an interest in making a real difference in our community. We can’t wait to work with the members and keep them attending events. We had lots of people that weren’t freshmen. We will hold our first meeting of the year this Thursday, September 15th. By the end of the day, we had several pages of sign ups. Club rush definitely a success

POSTER MAKING With Club Rush closely approaching, new members need to be aware of our amazing service organization, Key Club. Thus, members and officers spent their Saturday painting colorful, eye-catching posters to help spread the word. Poster painting is a wonderful way to get members acquainted with one another. Additionally, it is simple, artistic talent is not necessary, which makes this event open to everyone. After the poster painting, we played games and ice breakers. For example, we played with water balloons which was really refreshing on a hot afternoon. The members also had three-legged race relays, which was fun and exciting. We also played blind-folded relay races, where one person has to direct their partner through the course, which helps develop bonds between people. The whole afternoon was really fun and a great way to socialize while performing acts of service.

meet south hills’ new officer! With the new year of 2016-2017 in full swing and with classes already in motion, South Hills gains a new club officer in their ranks! Samantha Nguyen, a freshman, has joined the club as the Builders Club advisor with credentials under her belt as well as the excitement at the prospect of a new year and a new club to not only share ideals but to also serve others.

What motivated you to become an officer so early during the year? “Well I was in Builders club in middle school and I was their treasurer. I loved to go do activities with the club so I thought about doing even more in high school!”
