Editor’s Note:

“The thing I am most excited to do is hangout with my friends now that I am vaccinated! But I am also happy that I get to see my family for the upcoming holidays like the 4th of July. I think that this summer is going to be exciting with everything kind of going back to “normal” which hopefully means I will get to go out and do things that I wasn’t able to do during the lockdown!!” - ANGELINA SAGON, COVINA GENERAL MEMBER

LETTERS FOR SENIORS By: Roslyn Nava, iPoly Editor

IPoly Keyclub started off the 2021-2022 term with an in-person event we named “Charity Quilts ‘’. This event took place on May 21st from 3 to 5 pm at Cortez Park. Five of our members attended and were chaperoned by the lovely Mrs. Price. Participants were expected to bring scissors and at least

12

ten pieces of 12x12 cloth (both old and new fabric). With these materials, our members created a considerably sized blanket that will be donated to Shepherd’s Pantry later this month. This event was both resourceful and beneficial to the homeless community. During this event, we made sure to layer some of the

fabric so that whoever was receiving it would have a nice, thick blanket. “Charity Quilts” is the first in person event iPoly Keyclub has held since the start of the pandemic. It was a great opportunity to see our members face to face after so long.

WHEN WE ASKED DIVISION EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT, DANIELLA LAHER, ABOUT HER THOUGHTS ON THIS EVENT SHE SAID, “IT WAS NICE SEEING EVERYONE AGAIN! BEING ABLE TO HANG OUT AND COLLABORATE ON SERVICE PROJECTS IS SOMETHING THAT I REALLY MISSED FROM THE PAST TERM. I CAN’T WAIT TO HAVE MORE INPERSON EVENTS.” AFTER SEEING SUCH SUCCESS, IPOLY KEYCLUB IS ALREADY ENVISIONING MORE BLANKET MAKING EVENTS FOR THE FUTURE.

“This summer I am most excited about getting ready to go back to school next year and participating in as many key club events as possible.” - DAYANA PAMPLONA, NORTHVIEW PRESIDENT “I am excited for all the upcoming key club events and getting to spend more time with my friends!” - AVERY PARAISO, NORTHVIEW SECRETARY “I am most excited about having time to do my favorite hobbies :)” - ISABELLA HUANG, NORTHVIEW GENERAL MEMBER

ICE

During AP and finals season, we wanted to give members an opportunity to participate in fun service events without taking time away from their studies. This led us to create our monthly online service competition. During the entire month of May, members played Freerice and had by the end of the month to accumulate up to four service hours. The member who

submitted the most grains of rice would be rewarded with a $15 gift card to a place of their choice. Member Andrew Zhang accumulated an impressive 25,320 grains of rice, and won a $15 Target giftcard! We were so grateful to all our wonderful members who participated, and we are glad we got through finals and AP season together!

“FREERICE WAS A REALLY GREAT AND SIMPLE WAY TO DO SERVICE ON OUR OWN TIME, AND IT WAS FUN AND ALSO EDUCATIONAL AT TIMES :D” -ANDREW ZHANG

LETTERS OF LOVE SENIOR MEMBER, BRENDA ALVAREZ SAYS IT “WAS A GREAT WAY TO ACTIVATE MY CREATIVITY SKILLS AND IT WAS AN OVERALL NICE EVENT :)”.

““I can’t wait to spend time trying out new hobbies and hanging out with my friends” - CARINA YOUNG, WALNUT GENERAL MEMBER

Last week on June 2nd, 2021, we hosted our first general meeting. We introduced our new cabinet as well as our first service events coming soon. Some of which included 14 Hours of the Summer of Service part of D35E from June 11th to June 13th, Eliminate Week part of The Eliminate Project for UNICEF from May 31st to June 4th, Letters of Love for

pediatric patients on June 4th, and making dog toys for the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter coming up on June 8th. The Letters of Love service event already took place and we were able to make sweet cards of love for pediatric patients. We are very excited for the new term to serve our community and create a welcoming energy to new members!

“I think as a junior I wasn’t able to spend a lot of time with family and friends because of my classes, sat prep, etc. In addition, due to the pandemic it’s been really hard seeing people in person and so I’m really looking forward now to see some of my friends I haven’t seen in a long time and spending more time with my family. Especially now that I’m going to be a senior when school starts so I am going to be super busy with college apps and I only have one year left before we all go to college. So I think it’s really important for all of us to treasure the time we have left and spend more time with our friends and family!” - RACHEL ZHENG, WALNUT CABINET “I am most excited about the extra time I have away from five subjects worth of homework and being able to focus on my extracurriculars” - KAITLYN ZANG, WALNUT CABINET “I’m excited to finally have some free time and get a full eight hours of sleep.” - ANDREW ZHANG, BONITA GENERAL MEMBER

SYDNEY CHUA, ONE OF OUR VOLUNTEERS IN THE EVENT, HAD THIS TO SAY ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE : “I HONESTLY FELT SHOCKED WHEN I SAW THE AMOUNT OF TRASH I HAD COLLECTED IN JUST A FEW HOURS OF WALKING AROUND!” SHE ALSO EXPRESSED THE SUBCONSCIOUS FEELING SHE HAD OF “LEAVING A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT AS [SHE] PICKED UP TRASH FROM THE STREETS AND PARKS NEARBY.”

“I’m most excited about summer to recharge my batteries, have an opportunity to hang out with friends, do service projects, and be ready for a superb Junior year.” - KATELYN RONEY, BONITA GENERAL MEMBER

By: Bea Guarin, Covina Editor

LITTERATI

This path month Covina Key Club decided to have both of our service events be accessible to our key clubber on their own independent time. Our decision was made as a way to still provide our members the opportunity to collect service hours, while allowing them the flexibility of when to do so as the stress of finals and AP exams peaked. One of the service

events we had introduced was called “Litterati”. This service event was actually brought up as a suggestion from one of our members, Spandan Suthar, in which our members were encouraged to go outside and pick up trash to throw away. Utilizing the Litterati app, our member’s contributions to picking up pieces of trash were documented and became

part of Litterati’s bigger goal. That goal being to spread an empowering message to a greater number of individuals and companies of the impact said litter is having on our environment. This message is being spread globally by a collective of volunteers using the app which we can now proudly say also includes some of our very own key clubbers!

OVERALL LITTERATI PROVED TO BE YET ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SERVICE EVENT FOR OUR CLUB!

17

MUSTANG M In the past month, Walnut Key Club participated and helped host an event called “Mustang Madness.” The purpose of the event was to help celebrate the seniors’ last days in high school due to COVID taking away their senior year. Seniors who came would get a stamp card which could only be filled if they played the games. In return for filling out the entire stamp card, they would turn it into the front, for a raffle ticket

18

“What I’m really excited for this summer are the many service events our club is planning where we hope many key clubbers will be able to socialize, have fun, and do lots of service!” - THOMAS LE, COVINA PRESIDENT “I’m excited for the extra time I’ll have that I can use to spend with my family and volunteer at different places.” - ANYA RAGASA, IPOLY GENERAL

in order to win a stuffed animal. The games would be in the booths which the volunteers helped run and regulate. From 6:30-9:00, seniors came with their friends to participate in the games that were set up, and from 9:00-10:00 they watched a movie on the grass area to wrap up the night. In the end, around 200+ seniors came by and participated in the fun and exciting games.

SENIOR CELEBRATION RS FI

T IN PERSON

On May 25th, we had an in-person meeting to celebrate our club’s seniors. This was Nogales’ first in-person event and we made sure to stay safe and still have fun! Club members, officers, and most importantly, our Key Club seniors met safely to congratulate our seniors for their hard work, perseverance, and participation in the club considering the struggles they’ve endured. Key Club senior, Celeste Antuna said “It was really exciting to see everyone since it’s been a

20

while since I’ve seen anyone, we talked, and played some pool (I won, haha). Once we got our certificate and sash we took some pictures together and it was really fun talking to each other in person”. All attendees stayed for photos and had an amazing time seeing each other face to face for the first time. Our two seniors who showed up received their sash, membership card, pin, and certificate. It was also our first time meeting Mr. Kim, our faculty advisor, in person.

ET’S ALK

“I recommend that our members look at local opportunities around the community like the soup kitchens, but also preform acts of service in their daily lives. Even something simple like picking up trash they see on the street, performing the little acts can make a positive impact towards the community.” - Christine Wang, D35E HSTC

“Unlike most service clubs Key Club continues to push out service events for their members even during summer vacation! Summer break is the best opportunity for members to participate in lots of service events and wrack up those hours so make sure to attend all of the events we offer!” - Marcus Fang, D35E Lieutenant Governor

THIS MONTH’S TOPIC: SUMMER SERVICE

“I recommend serving digitally through various websites like beanbeanbean or free rice , especially when it’s really hot outside! Going on a walk and picking up trash is a great way to serve while also exploring/ exercising. It can be even more fun if you have friends join you!” - Joshua Santhirasegari, D35E Event Coordinator

Members are finally free from school and have more time to participate in other activities. I highly encourage all of our members to involve themselves in many of the service events that key club is providing this summer as a way to get some service in while also making the most out of their summer. - Rebekah Tsai, D35E Member Recognition
