The school bell rings and you dart out the classroom. You can't wait to go home, grab a snack, take a nap, etc. BUT WAIT. Aren't you forgetting something? Now, you might expect me to say, 'That one Key Club event tomorrow," but no. I'm actually talking about your other priorities, school and homework. I know we all dislike having to complete the ever so fun thing we called homework. I would like to remind everyone that although Key Club work and events are fun, (well, they are) PLEASE make sure your grades aren't slipping. I would hate for any one of your grades to start dropping because of Key Club. Keep your priorities in order.
School, family, friends, food, breathing, other bodily functions that are necessary ALL come BEFORE Key Club. It may not be in that specific order, but please keep that in mind. For the juniors, your classes are going to be rigorous, you're going to be prepping for those ACT/SAT tests, and seniors, and youâ€&#x;re most likely going to have a panic attack, come time for college applications and filling out the common app. Take this time, while the year is still in its beginnings, to plan out the year. You don't need to plan out all your meals and outfits, but have a general goal/task that you want done each week (or even day). "A
stitch in time saves nine." Work now, play later. Remember to pay your dues as well! Turn them in early on so you don't have to worry about them! I cannot stress HOW important they are; just take my word for it. As the school year begins, you may see several freshmen, wandering about aimlessly. Do them a favor and help them out. That may be you in the near future at college! :] So, DO THE RIGHT THING. Also, you can always subliminally encourage them to join Key Club. Hint hint.

Our D goal for PTP is to raise $3,000.
PTP and Its Purpose
Unintentional injury is the #1 killer of children age 14 and under in the U.S. Unintentional injury kills more children every year than any other cause - including disease, homicide and suicide! 90% of these unintentional injuries can be prevented!
Our mission is to develop local projects, which will reduce the number of children in our district who are killed or injured by trauma. Your club can help prevent unintentional injuries in your community by sponsoring a service project on topics such as, Bicycle Safety, Bicycle Safety Helmets, Booster Seats, Child Abuse Prevention, Child Passenger Safety, Child Safety, Child Safety Seats, Children's Miracle Network, Fire Prevention, First Aid and CPR, Home Safety, Immunizations, Injury Prevention, Pediatric Trauma, Playground Safety, Poison Prevention, Safety Belts, Shaken Baby Syndrome, Smoking Awareness and Water Safety.
District Project: Shine This year's District Project is Shine, where we turn our attention to those with special needs including but not limited to those with academic, physical, or mental disabilities. Those with disabilities need to be cared for and accepted not ignored. So, as Key Clubbers this is our chance to show how we do care, how we need to support those in need, and how we can help. And as Key Clubbers, we can also set the example for others to help those with special needs. One of the best ways Key Club can help is by spreading awareness and educating others about the numerous disabilities out there. With knowledge comes awareness, with awareness comes action, and with action comes making a difference. So be the light in someone's life and care for those with special needs.

The Eliminate Project With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family. Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Now, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. And in doing so, the project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care. The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.
Our District goal for Eliminate is to raise $450,000 by 2015.
+ Sending in photos and articles of service projects and/or events will be greatly appreciated. This allows us to send your articles to the district to be recognized. It also helps us with our DNEWS with club events and more visuals. Please send any photos/articles to Kim Vo at <kimvohanh@yaoocom>.

CLUB RUSH! With school just starting, you spend the first week or so getting used to your new schedule, your classes, and the different people. But that also means, one of the big events of the new school year is about to start. Club Rush. Most of you should already know what that is and how it works. But, how many students do you attract? Club Rush is one of the best opportunities to gain a number of new members, especially Freshmans.
Paying Dues To continue our global and local service, each member is expected to pay his or her annual membership dues. The Key Club district and international dues provide resources and support to continue developing leaders through the service. Key Club members should pay their own dues in order to provide a sense of ownership in the organization. The dues payment is part of a learning process and dues collection should be the responsibility of the Key Club treasurer.
What are YOUR goals for the year? How can YOU benefit your Key Club? 6
So start to prepare for your school‟s club rush, do you have fliers? How about the booth you‟re going to use or the signup sheets? Have you thought about how you‟re going to show what Key Club is about and not just “another community service club?” Let the students know what Key Club is really all about. Show your spirit! Don‟t just sit there at your booth and hope that people will sign up, take action, and do chants and cheers. Ask your fellow members “how they feel.” Make it fun an exciting!
“Why should I join Key Club?” “Is it like the other clubs?” “What’s so great about it?” “What was that cheer you just did?” “How big is Key Club?”
Say a Freshman walks up to you and asks you these questions, how do you reply? Do you know the answers yourself? Many students will ask you questions regarding why investing $5-10 in a club is such a great idea when there are other community service clubs such as Interact Club.
More Publicity A great way to publicize Key Club within your school is to have a better connection with your school. Work with ASB and the front office along with parent associations. You can also hang up posters and fliers around your school with information on when your club meets up or have much the registering fee costs. If you want to be even more involved, you could also have a spirit group where they will be as spirited as they can about Key Club around the school. There are many ways you can publicize Key Club at your school, you just have to be creative.
Division 37 East
OFFICER TRAINING CONFERENCE & DCM July 23rd, 2011
First off, THANK YOU to San Pasqual High‟s Key Club Officers, faculty advisor, and Kiwanians! Without you guys being so on top of the tasks given you, our event would not have been the success it was!! So, thank YOU for doing what you did! I know a lot of our Jellies have benefited from this training conference!
Thank you to all the guests who came out to support us, to help present workshops, and to speak to us. It was really nice of you to come all the way to our Division on a Saturday morning! Your invitations to numerous events have been noted, and we hope to see you all again at these events! For all of those who were unable to make it to our training conference, we still want you to benefit from the training and the workshops that were presented. It may not „be the same,‟ but still take the time to look over the workshop presentations/ppt. They have been uploaded to our division‟s website: d37east.com under ‟RESOURCES.‟ Please check it out! If you have any questions about the slides/presentations, please send me an e-mail and I will be glad to clarify!!
“Everyone left smiling at the end of the day because seeing all of us bonding was like being with our family!”
“I do admit, I was very reluctant to attend this event, and I was a bit resentful that I had to drag myself out of bed early to drive and do “officer training”, but this event turned out to be surprisingly fun!” - Thai Nguyen San Marcos High Bulletin Editor
“It was well organized and successful! I had the chance to meet new people as well as bond with the whole group.” - Vanessa Rangel Orange Glen Public Relations More pictures can be found on the next page.

July DCM When: July 23rd Where: San Pasqual HS This event started at 10am-4pm, right before our OTC. During this DCM, the Division Team introduced themselves. Jose Espinoza (incoming sophomore at San Pasqual High School) will be my right hand man, helping me plan events and also…COMMUNICATING with YOU. We want your feedback for our events as well as ideas for events and fundraisers, please let us know if you have sudden inspiration and would like to share! He helped make our OTC the success it was, and we‟re hoping to make our events better and better! Please send Jose your feedback and any suggestions that you have for our division!! Even ideas for potential division fundraisers or projects! Justine also brought up the need for a shirt design. Overall, the DM had a great turn out with plenty of members from our division along with others.
Kiwanis DCM When: August 6th Where: Joslyn’s Senior Home The Kiwanis DCM was fun and emotional. It sadly started with a moment of silence to honor the Navy Seals and service members that were killed that morning, but later we were reminded of how muhc of an impact that Kiwanis has on San Diego and the world. There were a lot of service events that various clubs brought up and there was also a guest speaker who introduced a program called "Honor Flights." It was good to see a lot of familiar faces from the D37 Kiwanis family as well as my own Kiwanis club.

If you could name ONE thing you love most about Key Club, what would it be? “The friendly key clubbers and our intense dedication.” - Vanessa Rangel
“I love it because I’m doing something good for the world at an age where not many adults respect too often, and it’s enjoyable at the same time.” - Andrew Tran
“What i love most is the people in key club and that we are all as one!” – Anthony Theim
“Inspiring other people to reach their goals!” – Philip Nguyen
“We all get to work together and help the community in a fun, interactive way.” – Eureka Uno
What grade were you in when you first joined Key Club?
How did you feel about last month’s OTC? “I loved the OTC, it was a perfect way for our division to really understand how to improve Key Club and our community while also providing a good opportunity for us as a division to bond and become closer.” – Brian Meredith
“OTC was definitely not what I thought it was going to be...in a good way. I was not looking forward spending my weekend doing boring workshops, but it turned out to be so much more. I learned so much about Key Club as a whole as well as skills needed to be an effective leader. OTC really motivated me to be more active within the Key Club community.”
– Thai Nguen
As you can see from the chart above, most of the members joined when they were either a Freshman or Sophomore. These two classes are also very important when it comes to recruiting new members for your school because if you’re able to get thee new members to be more involved along with understanding how Key Club works, eventually they will be the ones to lead your club when they are Juniors/Seniors. Club rush is one of the best times to attract new members, so remember to plan early!

A couple of our Presidents and officers thought that it would be nice to share a little bit about themselves and how Key Club has impacted their life. So continue to read on and you will learn about a bit more about them.
I see key club as a positive environment to promote and create change. A lot of clubs provide a plan to improve the world but what makes Key Club special is that we are capable of making the change happen. Key Clubbers are a unique group of caring and passionate people, and I really believe we do have the means and drive to help our community, locally and globally. Key Club changed me as a person because it showed me how one's desire to help others does have a profound impact. I always thought Key Club was a college resume booster but I realized that it is way more than that, it is an opportunity to meet new people, see the world through a different light, and ultimately make an impact. For the 2012 school year, I would really like to make Key Club a household name within the San Marcos High School community. I really want to focus on spirit and recruiting more members but also not forgetting to emphasize how important it is to create and attend service events. GO JELLIES! >:D Brian Meredith San Marcos President

Hey there Key Clubbers and D37E Jellyfish! I am Luchie Glorioso, 2011-2012 President of Orange Glen's Key Club and I am very excited for an event filled year with you all. First and foremost, I must provide a background for you to get a sense of who is helping lead you this year. I have been an official member of Key Club ever since the 2010-2011 school year, but I attended meetings and events of Key Club my freshman and sophomore years. I attended Key Leader on a whim and immediately became attached to the spirit of the club and the enthusiasm of its leaders. This inspired me to become involved with the club and thusly run for President. I am very approachable and willing to help whenever it is needed- so please, don't be afraid to ask about the club! In the past years, our Key Club has been a sleeping giant, but most recently, as in last year, the beast has awakened. This year we are unleashing the beast with massive amounts of community service, active fundraisers, large projects such as Locks of Love, and LOADS of club and division bonding. You have a very respectable and enthusiastic board waiting to serve and help you with whatever you need. As a Key Clubber from Orange Glen, it is safe to say that you are in very good hands. I hope participating in Key Club will be one of the many highlights of your 2011-2012 year and I can't wait to see you all signing up for OG KC at Club Rush! Luchie Glorioso Orange Glen President
Hello my fellow Key Clubbers! My name is Melina Rios and I am the President of Escondido Charter High School‟s Key Club. I have been involved in Key Club since my sophomore year and have found it to be not only personally rewarding, but also as a major benefit to our community. For this reason, I love the service aspect of being in Key Club. My decision to run for president was fueled by my passion to have a positive impact on my friends and neighbors. I knew it was the right position for me because it would allow me to encourage my officers and club members to develop a love for service and become thoroughly immersed in Key Club! I know that with our efforts, we will see the changes that are going on as we continue to help others, especially those in need. And that is my vision: to promote service and help to those who need it the most. Becoming involved in the lives of others not only motivates today‟s youth to become more compassionate, but also allows us to step up as the future leaders that our generation will need to succeed. This 20112012 school year, I hope to further our involvements in food packaging events, fundraising for the PTP, and working closely with teachers in our community who may need our help. Ultimately, I hope for a year my members can look back upon and be proud of the benefits that have come from their service.
Melina Rios Escondido Charter President
When I first joined Key Club a year ago, I joined with the naive and stereotypical impression I think most people come into Key Club with. I thought, “joining Key Club = community service hours written down on a sheet of paper”. A simple, efficient, depthless endeavor. So, in other words, I had absolutely no clue what was really in store for me. In reality, Key Club has introduced me to a whole community of energetic, caring people, whose positive energy never goes unfelt. Whether that energy is focused into helping the community, or helping each other, Key Club essentially has shown me a systematic yet spontaneous structure for doing good. What could be a better or more honest endeavor than that? It‟s this good, honest spirit which makes me so happy and hopeful for HTHNC‟s young club and division. To be part of this group, at this pivotal point in our club‟s history, was what eventually made me decide to take the leap from club member, to club treasurer. To be honest, it was a bit of a frightening leap, but one of the main ways in which Key Club has changed me has been to show me the importance of contributing ideas and skills to the good of a club and a community. I realized that I could really make a difference by taking that extra step by running for treasurer. Now, when it comes to the question of asking myself, “what can I do to contribute?”, suddenly a whole new map of opportunities unfolds. I think of myself as an organizer, a planner, and a creator, and by putting these skills forward in my club, I want to draw that unfolding map, pinpoint some destinations, and take my club to those financial goals through creative fundraisers that help support the real, honest spirit of Key Club. Dani Jo HTH North County Treasurer
Hey! My name is Karen Zuniga and I'm a Senior at San Marcos High School. I've been in Key Club since my Freshman year so I decided to run for a position to further contribute to Key Club's zest. I view Key Club as an organization and group filled with many opportunities to give back to our community and meet people with the same proposition. Key Club has changed me by giving me the tools to thrive both inside and outside of school. Karen Zuniga San Marcos PR/ Bulletin Editor
