Jellyfishes, CNH - KATTACK! EY CLUB The Official Newsletter of Division 37 East JUNE 2011
The Rise of Jellyfishes The New Division REALIGNMENT As you all have heard, this year brings a new change to Division 37 North and South, our previous division(s). It was decided that the divisions were becoming too large, and it needed another split. The decision was made, and on April 17 of 2011, Division 37 East was born. Division 37 East is composed of nine schools; Escondido HS, Escondido Charter HS, High Tech High North County, Mission Hills HS, Orange Glen HS, San Marcos HS, San Pasqual Academy, San Pasqual HS, and Valley Center HS. Let’s all work together to make this the best year our Division has seen! And of course it will be the best because well… It’s our first year as D37E.

HIGH TECH HIGH NORTH COUNTY
SAN PASQUAL HIGH SCHOOL
Greetings JELLIES! As our year begins and my term as Lieutenant Governor starts, I can already see how close we are going to become. As you guys know, Division 37 East is a brand new division! With no previous records, goals, and history, it's up to US to create a foundation for the future! We want to set goals, break records, and claim names! AND YES, WE WANT THE SPIRIT STICK/TROPHY. This year will test our limits as Key Clubbers, students, and as people. Remember, that our Division is behind you every step of the way. We are your support, your safety net, your bouncy trampoline or whatever it is that catches you when you fall. Because we will never let you touch the ground. Even though I have been elected as a Lieutenant Governor, I am here to serve YOU and your CLUBS. I am still first and foremost a Key Club MEMBER. I know what it's like to be in your shoes; the random bouts of excitement and the dreadful SATS to the insanely fun times you have hanging out with your friends. I may be Lt.G, but I am still a person, a high-school Junior, soon to be a Senior. Please, never hesitate to approach me with questions! Heck, ask me how my day went or tell me a funny joke or lame riddle. PUNS ARE AMAZING. I look forward to this year; spending time with YOU guys, as a Division. Everyone will be JELLY.
Jose Espinoza is my name and I'm the type of person that likes to be respectful to others, and I try to think things through before I do them! I'm 15 years old, and I'm about to start my sophomore year at San Pasqual. I like to hangout with my friends, and enjoy reading the "Percy Jackson" series, and of course most of all serve our schools, and communities. My favorite desert is anything with chocolate, and my favorite color is green! I take my school work very seriously, but I also enjoy having fun! Being in Key Club my first year taught me so much about leadership, making new friends, and about my community and ways to improve it! I'm very pleased with all our efforts, and I'm looking forward to an amazing year with my Jellies!

TECHNICAL EDITOR: KIM VO SAN MARCOS HIGH SCHOOL
Hi everyone! I am extremely honored to be your Tech Editor for this year! I joined Key Club the beginning of this year as a member and I loved the excitement and dedication that everyone showed. I have a really strong feeling that this year will be one of the best years that Division 37 East will ever see. Of course, it is our first year. Being a part of this division in the past few months, I’ve noticed how everyone has been able to bond together, whether it’s because of events or DCM’s and their IceBreakers, and I will not let this spirit go to waste. We WILL make all those other clubs “Jelly” at how well we can bond together as a division and how amazingly spirited we are! And I promise you that, I will be and do the best I can as your Tech editor!

PAST EVENTS Miracle Mile of Quarters WHAT IS IT? The Kiwanis Club in Division 21 called the "Division 100 Miracle Mile of Quarters Kiwanis Club" held the annual Miracle Mile of Quarters event at Radys’ Children’s Hospital on Saturday, May 7. More than 250 Kiwanis members from 60 clubs in San Diego County, community groups, students, hospital employees and patients showed off their skills and designed quarter art placed on red carpets in front of the Hospital. In 2010, the one-day event helped raise more than $100,000 for Rady Children’s. All of the money raised from this event went directly to support pediatric trauma prevention in San Diego County. Eugenia C. Madrigal Orange Glen HS Treasurer
“MMQ was such a fun event, it started off with going straight to business and creating our mural but after all the work was done it became even more fun. The environment was so positive and being surrounded by tons of people that were all there for the same reason made it even better. After doing all the mural work and being super tired, bonding with other Key Clubber’s and playing a couple games of Ninja and grabbing ice cream with our LTG I was no longer tired. “

Krista Le San Marcos HS Member
“I have been a key club member for the past 3 years and have attended MMQ each year. I think the concept of the event is unique; getting together key clubs ranging from kids to college all in front of the children's hospital really represents how community service brings people toward greater causes and friendship. The first year we won 3rd place and it was an amazing accomplishment. Even though the following two years we didn't place, the fact that we were able to combine our creative juices and present artwork that sends a message toward love and care for others is a reward in itself. This year we made UP characters out of quarters and it was a great accomplishment. I can't wait until next years!”
Not only was it just Key Clubbers but members of youth groups, Circle K, and also Builders Club came to support the cause. Everyone showed their spirit and had a blast. From eating the delicious breakfast, to helping out each other with their quarter design, and finally to the amazing games of ninja (started by our own D37E members), everyone had a great time.

Divisional Conference Meetings
MAY 21ST – KIT CARSON PARK
APRIL 30TH
JUNE 11TH
HOSTED BY: JUSTINE HSU HELD AT: CSUSM
HOSTED BY: SAN MARCOS HS HELD AT: OCEANSIDE PIER
This was our very first DCM as Division 37 East. It was held on the track behind the "Kiwanians' Kickin' Cancer" tent at Cal State University of San Marcos. This was also during Relay for Life San Marcos and everyone helped out the Kiwanis’ with the booth and making lemonade along with doing odd jobs. A couple of our Key Clubbers also took a few laps around the track!
Thank you thank you to San Marcos Key Club for hosting an amazing DCM/Bonfire! They had members there as early as 7:30am to reserve a bonfire pit for Division 37 East! Major props to Kim Vo and Brian Meredith for contributing their Saturday morning to ensure we had a great fire pit! At about 4pm, we headed to the Oceanside Amphitheater and we began to do our beach clean-up. You'd be surprised at how many different things/trash we found. Paper, plastic, socks, single sandals, piece of an unidentifiable mass... Yeah, we really had no idea, but we knew it didn't belong on our lovely beach! We actually got our fire pit going before we had our DCM, and my apologies for the later start on the DCM. We were all just too excited from being ON the beach with such good weather! Club reports were done as usual, and if you're wondering what you missed in terms of other announcements, please ask an officer who attended the DCM!

After all the formal introductions and Justine’s spcheel, the Key Clubbers headed over to Queen Califa's Magical Circle Garden where they played a bunch of ice-breaker games including; Ninja, Ride that Horse, “YAH!”, Infection, Tag, and much more. Basically, everyone had a blast and everyone was able to quickly bond and had fun with each other.

Kiwanis - Key Leader OCTOBER 21ST – OCTOBER 23RD HELD AT: CAMP CEDAR GLEN – JULIAN, CA.
Key Leader is a weekend experiential leadership program for today's young leaders. This life-changing event focuses on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership-development experience. A Key Leader will learn the most important lesson of leadership—it comes from helping others succeed. Participants begin by attending a Key Leader conference, which is a weekend retreat. Large and small group workshops, discussions and teambuilding activities take place over the course of the weekend. Students have opportunities to learn leadership skills that will help them to change their schools, communities, and world for the better. While exploring leadership in a whole new way, participants will make amazing new friends and have experiences they will never forget. Positive, ongoing interaction with other Key Leader graduates offers continuing reinforcement, encouragement and growth of leadership skills. http://www.key-leader.org/Find-Key-Leader-Events/Register-Now.aspx There's the link, go sign up! Remember, if you are in Key Club, your registration fee is discounted already. Ask your Kiwanis Clubs to sponsor you. They should have funds set aside to help you and your club sends a couple of members to this amazing three day-two night retreat! This is where I made my goal of running to be your Lieutenant Governor! I hope to see you all there! Register as a Student and click Pay Later. :]
This summer, our LTG, Justine Hsu, will be doing club visitations, and that means, YES, SHE’S COMING TO SEE YOU, And your club. :] Please choose a date that she can stop by, be it at your school for a general meeting or (since most are on summer break) plan a service project in which she can attend. Neither of those work for you guys? Do a restaurant fundraiser/meeting. Let her know when and she’ll try to be there!

“The environment at the DCM in Oceanside definitely made it my favorite experience. Not only were we able to get more people from all of the schools in our division to come, but we were also able to get non key club members to join in. Everyone was getting to know each other and there was no separation of schools or people which I thought was the best part.”

Schools and Officers Goodbye School, Hello Summer!
Divisional Team
Being involved in Key Club elections, as a candidate or delegate, is a very enriching experience. It allows you to be more involved within your division, district, and even the international level of Key Club. By involving yourself in being, or in electing the next leaders of Key Club, you put your voice out there and stand up for your own opinions. It shows leadership and initiative as you become one of the changing actors for the future of Key Club.

Club Updates High Tech High North County Emma Huettig ( President ) High Tech High North County
High Tech High North County Key Club has been involved with a variety of exciting projects and fundraisers during the past few months. Members have continued to participate in our ongoing 'Adopt-a-Grandparent' Project, where members visit senior citizens at the Sunrise Senior Assisted Living Center in Carlsbad to converse, play games, and develop friendships with the occupants. We have also participated in the 'Stand Up for Kids' Clothing Drive hosted by the Kiwanis Club, Miracle Mile of Quarters (MMQ), and Relay for Life. In addition, we have recently completed our 'Kiss A Senior Goodbye' Project, where members created and sold candy grams filled with Hershey's kisses and a friendly note attached to each gram congratulating our school's Seniors on their upcoming Graduation! Our club was honored to have hosted the D37N Banquet at High Tech High North County on Friday, June 10th. It was wonderful gathering together with Key Club members and officers throughout D37N to celebrate every club's remarkable accomplishments and reflect upon the amazing memories that have been created during the 20102011 Key Club year. Shortly after the banquet, we were able to meet with officers and members from our newly formed D37E during the fantastic June DCM/Bond-Fiah! As summer begins, our club is eager to begin planning events and fundraisers during break. In addition, we wish to establish stronger connections and partner with other clubs to create fabulous and unforgettable projects! Our newly elected officers have been very hard at work learning the various duties and responsibilities connected to each of their positions. It has been exciting and inspiring as our new club officers and members continue to develop strong leadership and communication skills as well as express their creativity, talents, and passion to serve others. We look forward to launching new projects and preparing for district-level events such as O.T.C. and Fall Rally! GO JELLIES!

Orange Glen High School Luchie Glorioso ( President ) Orange Glen High School
For several years, the Orange Glen Key Club has been dangling over a cliff, clinging onto dear life. With about 10 active members, a maximum of 10 events a year, no Kiwanian support, and absolutely no district or divisional participation, the club was near extinction. This lifeless club took a sharp turn during the 2010-2011 school year, shooting from 30 paid members to 66 paid members and from 15 active members to nearly 60 active members. Why this change? Leadership. Initiative. Inclusiveness and most importantly: Commitment. We collected high schoolers that loved making and serving food at 5 in the morning at Soup Kitchen and people who enjoyed participating in the jury of Escondido's Youth Court. Several people enjoyed making props for the local elementary schools and began volunteering at the Escondido Humane Society. Others took part in the 30 Hour Famine and some helped at seasonal festivals. This Key Club has AMAZING, WONDERFUL, and EXTRAORDINARY members and they deserve positive direction (good leadership.) We discovered what they wanted and, as leaders, we followed through. Unfortunately, what dominantly stood out was the issue of low finances which offered some obstacles- especially as a Key Clubber. Our Key Club is presently paying special attention to $MONEY$. We want everything (trips, shirts, FRS, etc.) to be affordable, if not free. From candy sales, to grams, and with the minds of our soon-to-be Fundraising Committee, we WILL achieve financial stability as a club. With this said, we hope to not only continue the high quality community service we are providing but also strengthen it- Happy Key Clubbers = Quality Service.

FUTURE EVENTS Fall Rally WHEN: November 19th, 2011 WHERE: Six Flags Magic Mountain, Ca. WHY: Experience Motivational Programs, Divisional Spirit Rally, Meet New People, Helping out Pediatric Trauma, and Key Club Spirit.
Due to the District's massive size, two Fall Rallies are held each year; one in Northern California at Great America, one in Southern California at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Thousands of members gather at each of the two theme parks on their selected day, one in October, and one in November. At Fall Rally North and South, LTGs and Executive officers are "auctioned" off to Divisions; the winning Division is able to then spend a designated period of time with the "purchased" officer. Auction funds and a portion of the ticket sales for both events go towards Pediatric Trauma Prevention and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. For more information regarding registration or any other information, visit hwww.cnhkeyclub.org/events/fall-rally
It is never too early to start fundraising for future events, for your own Key Club funds, or even service projects! Not sure how to fundraise or where to start? Here are six ways to raise funds from the Key Club Leadership Handbook! 1. Recycle old cell phones. 2. Host a hair leg contest for your favorite charity. 3. Save or shave. Get a willing adult to agree to shave his beard if donations reach a certain goal. 4. Sell holiday flowers, cookies and goodie bags.
District Convention (DCON) WHEN: April 13th-15th, 2012 WHERE: Santa Clara Convention Center, Ca.
Here is your opportunity to meet thousands of Key Clubbers from the span of three states, be recognized for your club's achievements, elect the 20122013 Executive Board, and dance the night away at the Governor's Ball on Saturday night. Don't miss out on the most amazing Key Club event of the year!!! For those of you who have gone to DCON before, I think I can speak for all of us when I say it is an eye opening, hugely-motivational, over the-top amazing event! For three days, clubbers from all around CNH came together to share common experiences, unique personal stories, lots of laughs, nights of dancing, on-site service projects, and overwhelming KEY Club spirit. The energy is amazing. DCON is also the time to bring out individual club’s achievements. For more information regarding registration or any other information, visit hwww.cnhkeyclub.org/convention/district-convention

5. Create birthday kits. Sell and deliver cakes, donuts, cookies, balloons or something similar to students celebrating birthdays 6. Apply for a service grant. Youth Opportunities Fund will grant from US$100 to US$2,000 to fund clubs’ service projects. Fifty cents from each member’s international dues goes to this fund, which in turn helps fund service projects. All clubs in good standing and in a district can apply. The deadline is October 15. Download applications at www.keyclub.org.
