Happy July Lions! Can you believe June has already come and gone but here is July and all of its wonders! Other than being half way through summer, July was a big month with lots of events in Key Club -in particular the 2012 69th annual Key Club International Convention in Orlando, Florida! But asides for lots of rest and fun, I know many of you key clubbers have lots to discuss and talk about – from the OTC Experience to club events in July to upcoming events such as the Division Bake Sale Competition and even Beach Boomba! And even throughout the summer, I can’t believe everyone is still checking their e-mails and coming out to DCMs and keeping so active! I send out the largest kudos and thank you to each and every Lion who helped in keeping their club running smoothly. I really can’t say it enough times … we really are the PRIDE of Key Club International! I know a lot of clubs may be keeping a low profile due to the beautiful vacation season; but just know that I am very proud and loud about saying how I am so lucky to get to serve such a great division! Everyone … Keep doing what you do best, which is being awesome and continuing the drive to help another! For the month of August, the much anticipated Beach Boomba is rounding the corner … so be prepared to take part in the craziest water balloon fight, scrap out those coins to pie Region 3’s Lt. Governors, get ready to get your tan on, and (most of all) warm your throats to tell the world How You Feel! But don’t you forget, we also have our 2nd annual car wash competition happening at the end of August … so get ready to raise money for Pediatric Trauma Program and end our summer with a Bang! In the very wise words of Ellen Degeneres,
“Be Kind To One Another And Have A Good Day!” On the Prowl for Service,
Hannah Tuong Lieutenant Governor

[President] One of our many upcoming events for July is volunteering at the Aliso Viejo Aquatic Center to help out with their swim meet. We will be helping out with recording the times of the swimmers, timing races, writing ribbons, and running lane cards. We have volunteered at the Aquatic Center before and have helped them with their Annual R.I.P.P.E.D. Event and they were kind enough to have us back!
Another event that we are helping with this July is the American Cancer Association Relay for Life. We have been asked to help keep the participants hydrated since it a 24-hour walking/running/jogging event. We will also be checking people in, helping out with the chairmen of the event, informing people about the event, and helping to spread the word about cancer awareness. We are really excited to be a part of this event and can’t wait to see hundreds of local people come together to help the fight against cancer.
[President] Summer is finally here and Capo key clubbers are out relaxing on the beach, hanging with friends, and vacationing all around the world. Our school year ended with a blast with our End of the Year Party, and Capo’s new executive board is now working hard to prepare for the upcoming year. With many goals in mind, Capo is planning to turn heads in Division 41 South by starting and developing a new Builders Club at our very own Newhart Middle School. Spreading the word about Key Club to other middle schools is a great way to expand Key Club beyond high school in the CUSD and promote Key Club’s goals and missions to younger audiences. Capo is very excited and hopes that everyone else is excited about this project, too, and we hope that Mr. Jones, Newhart’s Principal, will hear our roar and permit the development of a new Builders Club.
[Publicist] The CVHS Key Club Party was an unforgettable event. It was the last event where we got to spend time together and say goodbye to our dear senior key clubbers. We had fun ‘ice breaker’ activities and other games like football. Many people enjoyed hanging out with their friends and dancing to the music. We had tables filled with food from fruits to pizza and even jellybeans. When it started to get darker, we roasted marshmallows and made s’mores. My favorite part of the party was when we all gathered around in a circle and our old president Christine gave the traditional key and a thoughtful letter to Jonathan. Another favorite part of mine was when we presented Christine with a thank you poster that we all signed. Overall, this event was a success and it made me love Key Club even more!
[President] On July 4th at 6:00 AM El Toro Key Clubbers woke up bright and early for the annual Pancake Breakfast held by Lake Forest Kiwanis. The Pancake Breakfast attracted hungry parade watchers and attendees as well as 5k runners. We served all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausages, water, coffee, juice, hot chocolate, and danishes. All volunteers were able to score a free breakfast, and man those pancakes were good! It was fun working alongside our sponsoring Kiwanis Club and getting to know the members. We also had the opportunity to work alongside Trabuco Hill’s Key Club and UCI’s Circle K. My job was being a runner. Basically what I had to do was help fill up low supplies and grab anything if anyone needed something. It was nice seeing little kids bright and happy with smiley faces when they got their pancakes and saying good morning to everyone. When some members had to leave early for their family 4th of July festivities, I took on other tasks. I became an orange juice pourer and we went through multiple cartons of juice. At about 10:00AM, the pancake breakfast wrapped up and we all said our goodbyes.
[President] Nothing raises more money than a little friendly competition, and nothing satisfies a sweet tooth more than a box of sweets— except maybe a few hundred dollars. On July 21st, we will be competing with our fellow key clubbers from our district in a district wide bake sale to raise a minimum of $300. This competition will pit the clubs from Laguna Hills, Tesoro, Aliso Niguel, Trabuco Hills, and even the awful El Toro against each other in a competition to see who can sell the most baked goods within a small time frame. Although we will be competing to discover whose club is the best—even though it is clear that Laguna Hills is the best—all the money we raise will be donated to the Pediatric Trauma Program, which specializes in local projects that reduce the number of children who are killed or injured by trauma. Hopefully, by the end of the day, we will be able to donate enough money to make a difference for the PTP.

Hopefully, by the end of the day, we will be able to donate enough money to make a difference for the PTP. A summer is never fulfilling unless you give back to your community, and what better way to give back than to help out little kids at the Pacific Symphony? On July 28th, we will aid the staff at the Pacific Symphony with their annual fair, which will feature many games and prizes for the kids. The fair will feature music and free food. This fair is designated to give the kids a day that they can enjoy and remember for the rest of their lives.
[President] This month, I attended my first Kiwanis' meeting! It was a great experience. I loved meeting the Kiwanis members of San Clemente. There was a great speaker at the meeting, and he had a very interesting outlook on how surfing is connected to business. His speech was very original and he made some excellent points! I met our Kiwanis advisor for the first time at our meeting which was a great experience. He, along with the other Kiwanis, was extremely welcoming. The treasurer of our Key Club also attended the meeting and we both greatly enjoyed our time with the Kiwanis!
[President] With Fall Rally just a couple of months away, Tesoro Key Club kicked it’s fundraising off for the 2012-2013 administrative year by hosting an open donation bake sale. With 25 members bringing delicious home made goods, we were nowhere near short of food, with gourmet treats from mini apple pies to homemade banana bread. Members drew donators in with newly learned cheers and chants taken home from the recent International Convention for Key Club. After four hours of screaming and soliciting, all the hard work paid off as Tesoro managed to raise $613.76 which will go towards the divisional contribution to Pediatric Trauma Program in November.
[VP] As a continuous service event, Orphan Care is held every other Sunday from 12-3pm at Saddleback Church. We, the members of Trabuco Hills Key Club, are very honored to be able to participate in this event because not only are we making a difference, but we are also practicing our CORE values every moment there. The kids who come here are orphans whom have fortunately been adopted, so Orphan Care is there to give the parents a place to rest while volunteers take care of the children. When they arrive we befriend the kids and become their big buddy for the day. We eat lunch together and also participate in all kinds of activities such as arts and crafts, face painting, board games, and sports. Most of these kids have been through a lot and to see them smile means the world to me. I always leave this event with a smile because I know that both my little buddy and I had a great time, and I feel like a kid again.
[Project Manager] The annual pancake breakfast is a great way for Key Club to give back to Kiwanis that has been extremely supportive of us. We received a lot of support and had numerous dedicated volunteers with both will and zeal to spend their 4th of July serving our community. Some of the tasks we preformed included pouring orange juice, keeping coffee and other beverages refilled, waiting on our guests, and cleaning up afterwards. Furthermore, we fundraised by selling water along the parade route. Being project manager was especially rewarding because of the responsibilities I was assigned and managed. Also, serving for Kiwanis and our community, on the 4th of July, of all days, brought to my mind the fundamental ideals this country was founded on. In my opinion, having the freedom to give back and serve is a privilege still denied to many across the world. Speaking for all of the Trabuco volunteers, we are grateful for the opportunities provided to us by Kiwanis and are happy to serve our community.
