OCT 2012

Did I scare any of you? But of course not— Lions are the fiercest! And as far as District Treasurer Cannon Joyce is concerned, we are also the most spirited! Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out to Region Training Conference (RTC) 2012! I could not have been more proud to call myself a lion—from the four workshops, to the meeting of countless new Key Clubbers, to making rain, to meeting District Treasurer Cannon Joyce and winning the spirit stick, RTC 2012 could not have been any better! But our October is much more than just RTC 2012! It truly has been an event-filled month, from club events to division events … to even holidays! There are many opportunities to help out our community, so don’t shy away; ask your club officers if there are any events to help out with, I know they will have lots to offer! I do look forward to hearing about all of your October adventures! Halloween does fall on a Wednesday this year as well … so don’t be out too late on a school night! And don’t you fret, one is NEVER too old to dress up OR collect candy! This year, trick or treat for our troops … our Division will be collecting your Halloween trick-or-treat candy to send out to our Troops via Operation Gratitude. Also, get ready to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF! UNICEF is one of our preferred charities; they are also the group that is currently spearheading the eliMiNaTe Project! But don’t forget to also get ready for Fall Rally South 2012! We’ll be going all out this year! It is truly our Lion quality that will earn us our spirit stick. Among the district events that we’ll have this year, Fall Rally is a truly memorable one! With the amount we have raised for PTP, I know we’ll be buying out district officers as well as other LTGs!

Have a SPOOKY October, Lions! On the Prowl for Service,

Hannah Tuong Lieutenant Governor

“As a volunteer, I helped out with the Relay for Life event on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, I helped out with putting out the Luminaria bags for the Luminaria ceremony. It was really touching to see and experience the ceremony as everyone was bonding over his or hers remembrance for a loved one who had cancer. On Sunday, Brittany and I rolled tables as part of the clean-up crew and we had a lot of fun! The event overall was amazing and it was an honor to be able to participate!

September DCM This month I went to my first DCM. It was at the Costeau Park in Laguna Niguel, and it was really helpful. The Lieutenant Governor, Hannah Tuong, was so helpful and gave a lot of information. Not only do I now know how important these DCM’s are, but I also realize how much it will help our club if I can attend. I am excited for October’s DCM!

San Clemente Club Rush Our school’s club rush was this month and we got over 90 sign ups! As a school that is working very hard on increasing our Key Club membership and spirit, we were very excited. We are hoping to double our membership this year, and we felt like this was a great start!

Orangeman Triathlon On September 23rd, a group of Key Clubbers braved the cold and dark dawn as they arrived at their water station alongside the road for the annual Orangeman Triathlon. The Key Clubbers filled hundreds of water bottles for the athletes that would run by later in the morning. As the race progressed, Key Clubbers helped the racing bicyclists by handing them bottles of water and energy gels while screaming words of encouragement. In addition, Key Clubbers worked hard to keep the roads clean and obstacle-free for the incoming riders. The triathlon raised money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Clemente so the Key Clubbers were happy to spend seven hours of their day to help out at the event. Overall, I thought event was very gratifying, as there is no better feeling than providing people with a much-needed cold bottle of water. We look forward to helping out at the same event next year.

Kiwanis Meeting 3rd,

On October I visited the San Clemente Kiwanis meeting at Carrows. It was really fun meeting all of the members and learning about certain aspects of our community. The main subject of the meeting was the RSM reserve and how it is important in our community. We talked about nature preservation, the impact on wildlife, and the dangers that it faces. I am thankful for all of the commitment our sponsoring Kiwanis show towards their youth groups. The San Clemente Kiwanis showed great hospitality and kindness, and I felt very included in the conversations they had. Overall everybody had a great time talking to each other and discussing upcoming Kiwanis and Key Club events.

Club Rush Our school held their club rush for three days during the last week of September. During snack time, all of the clubs set up their tables and booths as well as advertised to get as many students as possible to sign up. Key Club was representing the blue at the time, and it also had numerous other Key Clubbers help out. We got over 200 interested students sign up, and everyone was so stoked about joining. All in all, it was super successful, as we are still the biggest club on campus!

[President]

First Meeting On October 2, LHHS Key Club held their first meeting of the school year. It was a great way to start the year with over 100 students in attendance. It was also great to see old and new, aspiring Key Clubbers. Everyone was excited, especially the board. We reflected about all of the things that we have done over the summer and we discussed future events, such as the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes, Fall Rally, RTC, and T=shirts. Hopefully, this great start will continue throughout the year!

Joining the Fight Relay for life is such a great, inspirational event, and I am so glad to have been a part of it. Cancer is so widespread that almost everyone has or has had a loved one affected. It is wonderful for our community to come together, volunteer, and reassure each other that they are not alone in this fight. Everyone was so nice and appreciative, and it was our pleasure to serve.

Over 100 New Recruits 9th,

On October Trabuco Hills High School had their non-curricular club rush where Key Club recruited over a 100 new members. Once the bell rang for the extended snack, lines of students formed to get their name and e-mail down to become part of the Key Club family. This is a big deal for Trabuco since last year the club only consisted of 20 active members by the end of the school year. Our goal for our first meeting, which is on Tuesday October 16, is to leave a lasting impression on the potential Key Club members by playing fun ice-breakers.

“Joy Jars

are for kids in the hospital who have cancer, and it’s basically like a “don’t give up” kind of encouragement gift which is really rad. This was actually a challenge because we had to fit maybe five to eight toys including socks, rubix cubes, coloring books, markers, hand toys, etc. So putting them in an organized fashion was kind of difficult, but totally worth it and fun.

“This year at RTC, I was able to meet tons of cool people from all over region 3. The day began with spirit battles and pizza for lunch. Then all of the Lt. G’s welcomed us to Regional Training Conference. People were able tot take workshops that would benefit their positions in Key Club. Then to end the day, Division 41 South won the spirit battle against the 4 North Otters. T’was a great day.

Austin Malis, Executive Assistant

Despite the lack of submissions this month, this newsletter actually turned out very nicely! This is just like at the spirit battle at RTC: it’s not about the quantity, it’s about the quality. So huge thank you to those who contributed! And for those that are not featured in this month’s issue, you have until the rest of the term to! Senior year would be easy they said… It would be fun they said… Oh man, October is such a hectic and stressful month. Shout out to all my fellow seniors! I hope all is well with your applications and academic endeavors. It’s okay, we got this! Start building up your momentum now because Fall Rally is in three weeks! Carry on the Lion Legacy! Become one with the roar: stimulate that spirit, store that potential energy, and prepare to release it during Rally 3. I hope Fall isn’t being a tease with it’s Summerlike tendencies. The cold weather is creeping up, so stay warm and stay focused! Stay ambitious and get enough rest!

Roaring with Service,

Anhthy Tong
