District Project Voting for our District Project is officially over and this year our new project is *drum roll please* Alex's Lemonade Stand! When Alex, who was diagnosed with childhood cancer, was four, she set up a front-yard lemonade stand to raise money for doctors to help them find a cure. Since Alex set up her first lemonade stand in 2000 the foundation has raised more than $200 million. which has helped: Fund more than 1,000 cutting-edge research projects at nearly 150 institutions. Create a travel program to help support families of children receiving treatment and develop resources, such as our SuperSibs program to help people everywhere affected by childhood cancer.

Governor's Project Governor Chloe chose Thirst Project to be her Governor's Project for this service year! The Thirst Project is the world's largest youth-led organization to END the world water crisis. Why Water? Health and Sanitation: Waterborne diseases kill more children every single year than HIV, Malaria, and all world violence combined. Small children typically do not have strong enough immune systems to fight diseases like cholera, dysentery, or schistosomiasis. Women and children spend on average six to eight hours each day walking to fetch water. The average distance that women and children in developing communities walk to fetch water is 3.75 miles. The time children spend collecting water keeps them from going to school and getting an education.

District Endorsed Project The Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation The Lyme Disease problem was brought to Kiwanis’ attention during 2000-01 when New York District Gov. John Gridley vowed to do something to help children afflicted with this terrible disease. The Lyme Disease Project was quickly set up to help pay for medical treatment for children with this disease. Unfortunately most insurance companies do not pay for its treatment, which is very expensive. Our support is funded through donations from Kiwanis Clubs and individuals and channeled into the Pediatric Lyme Disease Fund. Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria usually transmitted by the deer tick. Lyme Disease may affect the brain in many ways. The spirochete which causes Lyme Disease can invade the central nervous system within days to a week of initial skin infection. the majority of people who are treated early with antibiotics do well and incur no long-term problems. People who are not treated until later may have a more complicated outcome.

International Endorsed Project March of Dimes March of Dimes leads the fight for the health of all moms and babies. Every baby deserves the best possible start. Unfortunately, not all babies get one and March of Dimes help change that. For 80 years, March of Dimes has helped millions of babies survive and thrive. They level the playing field for all moms and babies, no matter their age, socio-economic background or demographics. They support moms throughout their pregnancy, even when everything doesn’t go according to plan. March of Dimes advocates for policies that prioritize their health, supports radical improvements to the care they receive and they pioneer research to find solutions to the biggest health threats to moms and babies.

Service Spotlight Division 8a | Upcycling the Unused For Earth Week, we gave our members a chance to give back to the earth through the methods of recycling and reusing. Members gave in submissions where they recycled over 30 items and reused jars or plastic Tupperware to plant plants in. This service project showed me the importance of nature and why taking care of the earth is important. Since the pandemic, I have barely been out of the house, been in nature. Sure I do have plants at home, but it wasn’t the same and many of them were dying out. Almost every week my family and I tend to order takeout and we usually throw the plastic Tupperware away since there is no recycling bin in our building. This service project helped me realize that I could use it the plasticTupperware for better means. With it I planted plants and put them by a window so they could get sunlight. With the remaining I searched up the nearest community recycling center and I noticed it wasn’t that far from me so I recycled it there. The project made me realize that if I put more effort into helping the earth I can make a change even if it’s a small change. Charmie Patel (Academy of American Studies)

Service Spotlight Division 11 | Charity Miles Marathon The cause of this marathon was to bring more awareness to the cause by setting a goal that our club was going to reach in two weeks. In a week we were able to reach our goal of 200 miles so we increased our goal to 250 miles. Quickly, we were able to accomplish the goal. Using this, we were able to get more members to join and keep in the back of their heads that something as simple as walking is able to provide help to others in need. We created Instagram posts and stories to gain more attention and to provide a reminder to our members. To get more members to get on top of the marathon, we would shout out the top five members for getting the most amount of steps as they possibly could. During this event, my friends and I would have a set time where we would walk which motivated us to walk as much as we could. To keep our motivation going, we played music while we walked to get us in an up-beat mood. Allison Wong (Millennium High School)
